This chapter on the square-set system of mining em¬bodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the chapter were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from information circu¬lars prepared by consulting engineers to the USBM on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Al¬though some of the properties discussed are no longer in operation, the methods described are still valid. The square-set system of mining has been very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the US. It is mainly employed for extracting rela¬tively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and¬fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50% of the ore may be extracted by square setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage has been mined yearly by square setting, prin¬cipally in the western states. Due to the high cost of timber and the relatively low average production per manshift, this system generally is not used when the ore can be mined by some other method; it usually is adopted as a last resort. Square setting, however, has a special field in that ore bodies not minable by other methods can be stoped by this system. As square-set mining was widely known, there was a tendency for years to use the method regardless of its suitability. With the increasing need for economy and the development of other methods, square setting has been superseded in many mines by cut-and-fill, top slic¬ing, or sublevel caving methods. The term square-set mining as used in this chapter includes all stoping methods in which the space made by the removal of the ore is timbered with framed sets. The sets usually are square in horizontal section. The stope may or may not be filled with waste rock as stoping progresses. HISTORY OF THE SQUARE-SET SYSTEM Prior to 1860, open-stope methods with stulls for casual support accounted for most of the mineral pro¬duction from underground mines. Attempts to mine large ore bodies that required artificial support resulted in disastrous cave-ins and loss of life. The art of mining received a tremendous impetus following the introduc¬tion of methods for mining the bonanza ore body which was discovered in 1860 in the Ophir mine on the Comstock lode, Virginia City, NV. This ore body was phe¬nomenally rich and eventually proved to be 122 m (400 ft) high, 27 m (90 ft) wide, and 98 m (320 ft) long. The mining of this large high-grade ore body taxed the best engineering talent of the time; the problem was finally solved by Philip Deidesheimer. According to Eliot Lord (1882): "At the 50-foot level the vein of black sulphurets was only 3 or 4 feet thick, and could be readily extracted through a drift along its line, propping up the walls and roof when necessary by simple uprights and cap-posts. As the ledge descended the sulphuret vein grew broader until, at the depth of 175 feet, it was 65 feet in width, and the miners were at a loss how to proceed, for the ore was so soft and crumbling that pillars could not be used to support the roof as in coal mines. They spliced timbers together to hold up the caving ground; but these jointed props were too weak and ill-supported to with¬stand the pressure upon them, and were constantly broken and thrown out of place. The dilemma was a curious one. Surrounded by riches, they were yet un¬able to carry them off and their mass of black sulphurets bade fair to become a white elephant on their hands. The Ophir Company began to wish themselves less for¬tunate, as their miners narrowly escaped burial day after day in their attempts to stope out the ore. "A young mining engineer, Philip Deidesheimer, was in charge of a quartz mine in Georgetown, El Dorado County, Calif., in the autumn of 1860, when this serious check to the development of the lode occurred. At the request of William F. Babcock, a trustee of the Ophir Company, Mr. Deidesheimer left his California mine and crossed the mountains with a letter from the direc¬tors of the Ophir Company, authorizing him to inspect the workings of their mines and make such changes in the method of timbering as should seem to him expe¬dient. After examining the vein he designed, in the course of a few weeks, a system of timbering which proved to be exactly adapted to the requirements of the work. Experiments which he had previously made in California gravel and quartz mines furnished the out¬line of his plan. This was to frame timbers together in rectangular sets, each set being composed of a square base, placed horizontally, formed of four timbers, sills, and crosspieces from 4 to 6 feet long, surmounted at the corners by four posts from 6 to 7 feet high, and capped by a framework similar to the base. The cap pieces forming the top of any set were at the same time the sills or base of the next set above. These sets could readily be extended to any required height and over any given area, forming a series of horizontal floors, built up from the bottom sets like the successive stories of a house. The spaces between the timbers were filled with waste rock or with wooden braces, forming a solid cube when¬ever the maximum degree of firmness was desired. By adjustments of these sets the ore bodies along the line of the lode were extracted with comparative ease and security." Most mining methods are evolved slowly and are the result of the combined efforts of a number of minds; Deidesheimer's feat was remarkable in that his system was immediately successful. The Wyoming craton in the western United States is a favorable terrane for diamond deposits. The craton hosts a variety of ultramafic, ultrabasic, and ultrapotassic rocks. Additionally, a few hundred 'kimberlitic' heavy mineral anomalies and some geophysical and remote sensing anomalies indicate the presence of undiscovered, mantle-derived, pipes in the craton. The Wyoming craton is separated into a Wyoming 'archon' known as the Wyoming Province, and the Colorado 'proton' known as the Colorado Province. The 'archon' underlies much of Montana and Wyoming and continues north into Alberta and Saskatchewan; the Colorado 'proton' underlies much of Colorado and a small portion of Wyoming. Although most exploration geologists would consider the 'archon' the most favorable terrane for commercial diamond deposits, the 'proton' has produced more than 120,000 diamonds, while the 'archon' has not been very productive.

Newmont Mining Corporation and Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. concluded an exchange of land and reserves in an agreement signed May 3, 1999.This exchange of assets allowed Newmont to develop the Deep Post underground mine from within Barrick’s Betze-Post open pit, thus reducing capital expenditures, lowering operating costs, and advancing the production schedule by nearly three years. Based on previous experience, Newmont is confident that the Deep Post underground mine can be successfully developed and operated within a large, active, open pit mine. The project also faces difficult geotechnical conditions including weak ground, scattered pockets of groundwater, and elevated rock temperatures.

Inflation and burgeoning costs are two among many factors which have generated a new surge of interest in "fringe benefits" (sometimes referred to as "supplementary remuneration" or "supplementary compensation"). Other specialized forms of compensation ("perks", in the vernacular) such as company cars, windowed offices, etc., which also are the subjects of current study, are outside the scope of this paper. For businesses, interest in fringe benefits is based on concern for employees? welfare, compliance with government requirements, and an increasingly burdensome impact on bottom lines. In 1980, according to Fred D. Lindsey in the October 1980 issue of Nation's Business, employee benefits will cost American employers an estimated $420 billion. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, "some fringes!" Indeed, few if any administrators consider employee benefits as fringes. Employee benefits impact other major areas of a company's operations as well. As listed by Beadle (1980), these areas include employee relations, collective bargaining, short-term costs, long-range funding, manpower planning, compliance with legislation, taxation for the company and for the employee, corporate image in the community, competitiveness for staff, communications, administration, claims cost containment, etc., etc.

"Fostering positive community relations is a principal tenet of sustainable development, but conflict can test even the strongest of relationships. While conflict surrounding resource development projects has the potential to be destructive, it may actually pose opportunities for partnership and collaboration when managed effectively. It is therefore not only important for mineral resource professionals to recognize the financial and social costs associated with legal disputes among project stakeholders, but also for them to prioritize resolving social conflict using alternative channels that allow for win-win outcomes. A variety of dispute prevention and resolution techniques do exist, but successful practice is not yet the norm. Here we review the sources and consequences of social conflict in the context of mining projects, and discuss typical and alternative approaches to conflict management in light of their respective benefits and drawbacks. We also suggest implementation of conflict resolution lessons into resource-related university curricula as a critical step in the continued shift of the mining industry towards sustainable development. INTRODUCTION Social conflict is a recurring phenomenon in the human experience and serves as a critical mechanism for change [1-5]. It occurs when two or more parties perceive that their needs and interests are in direct competition with each other and believe they cannot be reasonably accommodated. Conflict over mineral resource activities, particularly the distribution of benefit and risk, has become an omnipresent issue throughout the world [6-7]. Contrary to common perception, however, conflict can be a positive, transformative encounter in some instances [2, 8-11]. For this to be possible, society and its acting agents must reconsider how to address conflict. What if conflict were only a challenge to try something different? It is well-understood that the mineral industries must manage an increasingly significant volume of social conflict [12-13], which can be a costly externality impacting all of whom are involved. We commonly consider conflict in a two-party sense, but this deeply over-simplifies the true number of stakeholders. Besides mining companies and community members, government policymakers and regulators, public interest groups, and judicial systems, to name a few, bear the social expenses of poorly-managed conflict [4, 6, 12, 14-22]. It is desirable for interested parties to participate actively in a constructive way to pursue their needs rather than contributing to adversarial relationships, operational problems, and legal costs [1, 4, 12]. Some mining companies are of course already working to develop more productive relationships with their stakeholders, but there is undoubtedly still a gap between ideal and common practices. This gap can inhibit collaboration and threaten the potential for mutually-beneficial resolutions to complex social issues [12]."

An attempt has been made to compile and code geologic data relating to twenty of the major porphyry copper districts of North America in such a manner as to permit the use of modern electronic digital computers to retrieve, compare, and build statistical mathematical models from the input. In the exploration process as part of his broader efforts to evaluate the potential of some prospective region, district, or ore body, the experienced geologist consciously or subconsciously compares and fits the observed geologic features to similar phenomena associated with known ore bodies with which he is acquainted. Thus an adequate conceptual "model" of the total geologic environment and type of ore body sought is an essential requirement for the successful exploration effort. Numerous such models of porphyry coppers already exist in the minds and notes of many experienced geologists today. These models are, of necessity, couched largely in qualitative terms and though they may be quite definite in the mind of the porphyry copper expert, the total concept of what constitutes a porphyry copper deposit and environment is difficult to convey in very precise terms. There probably is no such thing as a typical porphyry copper deposit. However, it is well understood that most of the deposits that have been studied have many geological characteristics in common. A logical question then might be: What characteristics are most common or how often do they occur in common, and what is their relationship to other common characteristics ?

The flotation of calcite has been studied by many investigators, especially in terms of type of collector; pH; and metal ions that activate and, more importantly, depress the flotation of calcite (1)(2). Research was extended to the investigation of the effect of polyvalent metal salts and sodium silicate using these materials added separately or in mixtures (3)(4)(5)(6). Flotation of calcite was also studied with respect to its function as a carrier in the beneficiation of kaolin clays by Ultraflotation (7) (8) (9). The carrier used in Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corporation's industrial Ultraflotation operation is calcite. This fact, coupled with the continuing interest in Ultraflotation phenomena, led to a study to determine the effect of polyvalent metal-silicate hydrosols on the flotation of calcite.

Chemical methods have been tried to alter the clay or the system water so as to obtain pellets with desired properties. Those methods include ion exchange and the use of supplemental binders (organic and inorganic).

The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN) adopted its Clean Water Plan (CWP) in May 2020, as part of a federal consent decree to comply with the USEPA’s Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Control Policy. Planned improvements include constructing a new regional storage/conveyance tunnel system, promoting green infrastructure/ source control, and expanding the treatment plant. Preliminary planning for the tunnel system was completed in October 2020. The Ohio River Tunnel (ORT) project is the first of three tunnel projects that make up the regional tunnel system. The ORT project began final design in 2021. This paper discusses the advancements made to the ORT preliminary planning concepts considering property availability, alignment optimization, tunnel boring machine evaluation, contract packaging and delivery schedules.

This study investigated the operating parameters that affect the kinetic dissolution of copper and cobalt from sulfidic ores. The sulfuric acid concentration, temperature, sodium chloride concentration, particle size range, and leaching time were selected to deduce the kinetic mechanism of the leaching reaction. Other parameters, such as a stirring speed of 250 rpm and the percentage solid 10% w/v, remained constant. The results reveal that an increase in acid concentration enhances the leaching rate of copper and cobalt. Copper and cobalt dissolution was positively affected by the addition of sodium chloride. The highest leaching rates of copper and cobalt were 24.71% and 15.65%, respectively. The chemical control and diffusion control by shrinking core models are well fitted as the kinetic models representing the dissolution of the minerals. The respective activation energies for copper and cobalt dissolution of 10.92 and 31.023 kJ mol− 1 for the chemical control and 18.83 and 37.28 kJ mol− 1 for diffusion reaction control were established from temperature-based experiments.

The multiple-criteria decision analysis is a technique that helps to find an optimal solution by evaluating conflicting criteria. In this study, an approach to perform multiple-criteria decision analysis for cut-off grade optimization, which considers the diverse stakeholder groups prevalent in the mining industry, is presented. The optimization model developed in this approach links the resource block model to the financial model, enabling the process to either maximize profit, net present value, revenue to the State, or extend the mine's life. To identify the optimal cut-off grade in each case, the Excel Solver function is utilized. Although it has limitations, the Solver function can still be modified to handle models with thousands of block values for determining input variables based on the target value. Following stakeholder engagement and dialogue, a single weighted average cut-off grade can then be determined. This approach is demonstrated for nine South African Witwatersrand gold mines.

More than 100,000 people from 110 countries involved in the construction aggregates and ready mix concrete industries are expected to attend Conexpo-Conlagg '99 in Las Vegas, NV March 23-27. The exhibition, the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, takes place every three years. It is held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas Hilton Center and Pavilion. The show serves as a venue for con- tractors and others involved in aggregates construction to view the latest in equipment, technology and services. More than 1,500 exhibitors will use more than 147,200 m2 (1.6 million sq ft) of indoor and outdoor exhibit space. Attendees include presidents and company owners, sales and marketing managers, general managers and project managers. An estimated 20% of the attendees will be from outside of the United States. New for the Conexpo-Conlagg '99 show is a 3,715- m2 (40,000-sq ft) Information Technology Pavilion. This event, organized by AIEIC Systems, will showcase computer technology for the architectural, engineering and construction industries. Shown in the pavilion will be the latest developments in cost management, estimating, bidding, project management and accounting. In addition, the Information Technology Pavilion will demonstrate the latest in computer-aided design software, systems and services. Conexpo-Codagg '99 will also emphasize live demonstrations of exhibitor's products. Individual exhibitors will demonstrate their machinery so attendees can see the latest technology in action. Because the Conexpo-Codagg exposition is so large, "shows within a show" have been created to help attendees locate the products and services best suited to their interests. Seven product concentration areas will be formed. Each area houses suppliers and manufacturers of similar products or services.

Using an approach based on the theory of similitude, the author develops a general equation and related concepts that provide new insights to an old problem. The load-bearing capacity (strength) of a square, rectangular, or cylindrical prism of a brittle material such as rock, coal, or concrete is expressed as the mathematical product of a size effect, a shape effect, and a function of the mechanical properties (deformability, cleat/joint spacing, and friction) of the pillar, roof and floor materials. Through an application of multivariate statistical analysis, the results of assorted tests and observations of failed pillars can be combined into a fundamental scaling equation, which provides a unified, consistent approach to the estimation of mine pillar strength. The form of the equation is sufficiently general to be able to incorporate refinements in the characterization of the basis factors, as they become available through future experimentation and analysis.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunneling is an ever-increasing prospect for underground construction, and, with each new tunnel bored, there are unknown elements. When boring through the earth, even extensive geotechnical baseline reports can miss fault lines, water inflows, squeezing ground, rock bursting and other types of extreme conditions. This article draws on the consider-able field service experience within Robbins to analyze successful methods of dealing with the most challenging conditions encountered. Many tunnel projects are located in areas with relatively poor access along the tunnel alignment and bored under extremely high overburden. These two factors often result in limited geological information. It would be reason-able to state that the deeper the tunnel, the greater the lev-el of uncertainties. When faced with these uncertainties everyone involved with the project including the owner, the contractor and the machine supplier must be prepared to tackle geological surprises. This article describes the problematic geological conditions and associated difficulties faced on three separate projects and the measures that were taken to overcome these difficulties.

An operating problem encountered at the Moa Bay operation in Cuba, where nickeliferous laterite ore is processed by sulfuric acid pressure leaching, is the formation of alunite and hematite deposits on the autoclave walls. The AMPX Extractive Research & Development, Inc., metallurgical laboratory (Golden, Colorado) has made substantial improvements in the Moa Bay process in the areas of metal recovery, energy consumption, and feed versatility. One of the advantages of AMAX's process is its ability to treat substantial portions of nickel- and magnesium-rich serpentine while maintaining acid utilization efficiency. The process minimizes scale formation by combining staged acid addition with vigorous agitation and 270°C operation, but does not eliminate scaling. This paper describes how advantage can be taken of MgSO4?XH20 precipitation both to inhibit alunite scaling and to disperse hematite scale within the MgSO4?XH20 matrix. Cooling the autoclave from its 270°C operating temperature down to 180°C takes advantage of the reverse solubility of magnesium sulfate. The magnesium dissolves, liberating entrained hematite, thus providing a means for control of autoclave scale with minimum process disruption.

The Mexican fluorspar industry is faced with and will face serious problems, some of their own making and others beyond their control. However, they still offer the most secure source of fluorspar for North American' consumers. Since 1975, even in light of declining markets, they have, increased then production capabilities' as shown in Table #1. In analyzing Table #1, we note that Compania Miners Rio Colorado has closed down due to their ore reserves being exhausted. Fluorita de Rio Verde expanded their acid grade fluorspar capacity in anticipation of additional North American business. Campania Miners Las Cuevas presumably increased capacity to meet their North American contractual commitments and to supply their own hydrofluoric acid plant (Fluorex) at Juarez, Mexico. Historically, the Mexican fluorspar industry has relied on the United States as the mainstay for their sales. As shown in Tables #2 and #3, the Mexican share of the United States market has moderately decreased. However, as noted in Table #4 the volume loss is substantial as explained below.

Discontinuities are geologic occurrences in rock and when present within a pillar, reduce the strength of the pillar. Empirical formulas that are commonly used to determine pillar strength do not explicitly take into account the presence of discontinuities and thus can overestimate the pillar strength. The effect of discontinuities on the strength of pillars has been investigated using numerical models, but in these models, the discontinuity strike was parallel with the pillar faces. In this study, fully three-dimensional hard rock pillars were simulated using numerical modeling to understand the effect of the discontinuity dip direction on square and rectangular hard rock pillars. Based on the results, recommendations to assess a pillar’s strength in the presence of a discontinuity are discussed.
