There is pressing need for better means of exploring ground conditions ahead of mining. Exploration drilling has the drawbacks of high cost and a seriously restricted sampling zone. Traditional geophysical exploration methods including gravity, magnetic and resistivity techniques have been used with some success underground, but all give poor target delineation relative to range, since they depend upon minor distortions of a potential force field. Much greater ratios of resolution to range can, in principle, be obtained by employing electromagnetic or seismic radiation as the exploring agent. This is because propagation time delays can be used to measure range accurately, and to separate the small effect of a distant target from the much larger effects of nearer targets and of the transmitter. Seismic waves have long been used with great success in exploration for petroleum, and recent research on their application underground is promising. Electromagnetic (radar) waves have been very successfully used for detection and location through the air and outer space, and have also explored through polar icecaps more than a mile thick.l It is not generally realized that below the soil many rocks are also somewhat radar-transparent, and that radar can be used for exploring such rocks, once a quarry, a mine, a borehole, or other means of access has been opened. "This summary of international mineral exploration activities during 2017 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL), an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY) and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2017 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events and legislation that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize budget estimates for worldwide exploration activities in 2017 for 30 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys, based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinumgroup metals (PGMs) and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash), and other commodities (aluminum, antimony, diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements (REEs), scandium, tantalum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium and yttrium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in SNL’s survey for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, REE and tungsten were compiled for the first time in 2010, and scandium, vanadium and yttrium were added in 2014 because of their increased topical significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL surveys. SNL budget estimates exclude coal, and oil and gas. The 2017 SNL mining company survey compilation was reported by SNL to include an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that was not covered was accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities."

Rhenium is primarily recovered as a byproduct from molybdenum roasting circuits. However, rhenium is also present in copper heap leach solutions at very low concentrations, and this represents a potential new rhenium source. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) has developed a new process using carbon adsorption followed by ion exchange or solvent extraction to concentrate rhenium from less than 1 ppm to 15 g/L. The product is compatible as a feed to an existing rhenium processing plant. A pilot plant operated at Freeport-McMoRan?s Sierrita Mine has demonstrated the technical and financial feasibility of this new process. Copper heap leaching dissolves more than just copper from the copper ore. Several metals can be identified in leach solutions at concentrations of financial interest, rhenium in particular. Rhenium spot prices ranged from a yearly average of $1,070/kg ($483/lb) in 2005 (Magyar, 2008) to $10,400/kg ($4,706/lb) in 2008 (Polyak, 2013). The spot price in September 2013 was approximately $3,000/kg ($1,357/lb) of rhenium (Metal Bulletin, 2013). Several facilities at Freeport-McMoRan have very low rhenium concentrations in their copper leach solutions, ranging from 0.1 to 0.7 mg/L. The large quantity of solution available, if coupled with an attractive rhenium price, means that the rhenium contained in leach solutions may represent a significant value if a method of extraction could be developed. Testing has confirmed that rhenium adsorbs onto activated carbon much more selectively than other metals in the pregnant leach solution (PLS). A 100-gpm pilot plant was constructed to verify the lab-scale results on a larger basis and establish operating parameters for a full-scale operation. This report summarizes the initial technology development and pilot plant operation.

I welcome this opportunity to appear before you and to review briefly the various health and safety services of the Bureau of Mines available to the mining industry, other than coal, and also to tell of our plans for extending these services to improve safety and health conditions. The Bureau's health and safety activities are basically services by which we attempt to develop and disseminate information on improved techniques in mine accident prevention and promote mine safety education in the mineral industries. Unfortunately, some mining companies, particularly some of the smaller operations, seem to be unfamiliar with these services, The Bureau of Mines is charged by law with the responsibility for inspecting coal mines; other services to the coal mining industry and are provided only on request, Safety inspections and other services that we offer are provided for noncoal mining industries solely upon request.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations. New Mexico leads U.S. domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica and decorative stone. New Mexico also has the potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REEs), niobium and zircon, and other REE deposits are being explored. REE-thoriumuranium veins have been found in the Gallinas, Capitan and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Exploration for beryllium has occurred in the Ojo Caliente No. 2, Cuchillo Negro and Victorio mining districts. Companies also are examining high-calcium limestone and high-magnesium dolomite for potential development, while aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. IntroductionIndustrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life. They are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics to refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate nearly every aspect of daily life, their presence and their roles are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the nonmetallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a byproduct of cleaning natural gas, one of the world’s major energy fuels.Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 41 percent of the more than $3.1 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2014 (Table 1). In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations (New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division, 2015a). Most wet mines face unquantified water costs as well as the obvious wing costs. Both kinds of cost are multiplied by work at greater depth and by higher unit prices. This intensified challenge merits renewed or perhaps altogether new response. Any practicable way to reduce inflow tackles both obvious and unquantified costs. Ten groups of possible ways to do it are cited. Most have been demonstrated. Two are known from work other than mining. Surely new means can be found. Here are opportunities for operators of wet mines!

Breccia pipes are vertical pipe-like columns of rocks that provide conduits for fluid flow and open spaces for mineral precipitation, hence are focus areas for exploration. In the Gallinas Mountains, Lincoln County, New Mexico, there is recorded production of Cu, Pb, Ag, F, Fe, REE (as bastnäsite), and Au from 1902 to 1980, but no production reported from the breccia pipes. Previous studies described the occurrence of REE in breccia pipes, but their transportation and deposition controls are still unclear. The aim of this research is to characterize the magmatic-hydrothermal breccia pipes in order to understand the geochemical and physical conditions of deposition of REE and gold in the breccia pipes found in the Gallinas Mountains. There are more than 20 exposed breccia pipes that form a NE-trending belt about 3–5 kilometers, mostly gray-brown and consist of angular- to sub-rounded rock fragments, some host high concentrations of REE (80,500 ppm total REE) and Au (175 ppb). Preliminary studies suggest they are magmatic and intruded into the host rock and, subsequently, hydrothermal fluids precipitated F-REE and Au along the edges of some breccia pipes. More studies are underway to test this hypothesis.

The treatment of materials for the recovery of the precious metals imposes many processing and environmental challenges. Sunshine Mining and Refining Company has developed hydrometallurgical technology for recovery of values from refractory precious metal materials. At Sunshine, the industrial focus of these processes has been for the direct recovery of silver without cyanidation. However, recent work has indicated that these technologies can provide a means for treating complex, refractory gold concentrates. This will be the focus of this paper. The practice of pretreating ores and concentrates to make them more amenable to cyanidation is becoming more common. Several pretreatment options for sulfide concentrates containing gold include roasting, bio-leaching, direct pressure oxidation and nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation. The industrial use of nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation has been limited to the Sunshine refinery where its focus has been for the treatment of silver concentrates. Much of the reluctance, outside of Sunshine, to use this type of technology may be based on the perception that high costs are associated with using nitrogen species (e.g. nitric acid, sodium nitrite) to leach. Also, the use of nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation on an industrial scale is unfamiliar to most metallurgical professionals. A summary of pressure leaching processes which utilize nitrogen species as a catalyst is presented in Tables 1 and 2.

A series of performance studies have been conducted using counter-current column flotation to recover a marketable clean coal product from existing preparation plant fine waste streams. The test work was conducted at several preparation plant sites in Kentucky and Virginia and utilized a 0.15m (6 in.) I.D. column that was 5.79m (19 ft.) high. The refuse streams tested included both thickener feed and classifying cyclone overflow with a typical size distribution of 100 mesh X O. The percent solids of the column flotation feed varied from 1.5 to 15% while the ash content ranged from 30-60%. The concentrates produced contained 2-10% ash with BTU recoveries of nearly 90% using 0.12-1.25 kg/ton (0.25-2.5 lbs/ton) fuel oil and 0.12 kg/ton (0.25 lb/ton) MIBC. These results were consistent with or better than results obtained in preliminary laboratory scale column flotation evaluation. Test results from 7 different seams are discussed as well as scale-up relationships utilized to design a full scale installation presently in operation.

The inadequacy of our knowledge of the coal combustion process has long been recognized. This was expressed very well by Spicer and Finney (1). "The control of combustion processes in industry and the design of the equipment necessary for efficient burning to take place have always been very much branches of an industrial art rather than of an exact science. This has been especially true of the utilization of coal, a substance so hetrogeneous and complex in character that all too little is known about its chemical and physical composition.' During the past several years one branch of coal utilization, that of high temperature carbonization; has made significant advances from being an art into being an exact science. This has been accomplished by the development of petrographic techniques for identifying, measuring, and determining the thermal properties of the organic materials which affect the carbonization of coal and the correlation of this information with a pre-existing standard of coke quality, the stability index.

This paper shows the metallurgical test results that led to the design of the heap leach facilities of Philex Mining Corporation. The design incorporates a water management model as process solution circulation is excessive with high rainfall intensity in the area. This poses problems in the operations requiring stringent controls than would be necessary in a less severe environment. The corporate perspective embraces on environmentally-sound mineral development. A budget is always provided to environmental management making certain that no industrial development is moved forward at the expense of the environment.

In the early operations of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company, which extended from 1914 to 1926, the ore as mined contained principally sulphide copper minerals, manly chalcocite (Cu2S), This ore was milled in a 20,000-ton concentrator and the copper was recovered as a flotation concentrate which, was smelted at the nearby plant of the I ternational Smelting and Refining Company. In those days no attempt was made torecovercopper from any oxide minerals present. As mining operations progressed it soon became evident that the proportion of oxide minerals present would steadily increase, and. it was realized that some method of treatment would have to be developed whereby copper could' be recovered from both oxide and. sulphide minerals contained in the ore. A research program was instituted and after some years of experimental and, pilot plant work a new hydro-metallurgical process was developed whereby it became possible to extract copper from both the oxide and. sulphide minerals in a single leaching operation. The solvent adopted consisted of a mixture of sulphuric acid and ferric sulphate,' Following dissolution, the dissolved copper would be recovered by electrolysis. Also in the process of electrolyzing, spent solutions of sulphuric acid, H2SO4, and. ferric sulphate, Fe2(SOk)3, would be regeneratede and. somade available for continuous reuse. The process appeared to be a success and the decision was made to build a full-sized leaching plant for the future treatment of I spiration mixed ore. Construction was started and the leaching plant was completed in 1926, With the start of ferric-sulphate leaching the Inspiration Concentrator was shut down and, with the exception of a few short time runs has not operated since that time. The ferric sulphate leaching process served. Inspiration well for some 30 years and during that time won a name for itself as a classic example of hydro-metallurgical treatment of mixed sulphide oxide ores. Originally the plant was designed. to process some 7,500 tons per day of a mixed ore containing about 1,2% copper, of which 60% was present as oxide and. 40% as sulphide, Down through the years various improvements were made for the purpose of increasing plant capacity and as well to change the limiting 'factor of sulphide-oxide ratio, The final result was a leaching capacity of 9,600 tons per day when treating a 1% copper ore with a reversal of the sulphide-oxide ratio to 60% sulphide and 40% oxide.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to enhance methane control and mine ventilation practices at coal mines, as a method to mitigate hazardous work conditions. NIOSH researchers conducted case studies to investigate the effectiveness of existing systems and improve performance to decrease the potential for unplanned or excessive methane emissions. At one mine, drainage was influenced by hydrofracking inefficiencies where two of the six wells showed good frack development. Methane content was variable, from 300 ft3/t to 600 ft3/t. This paper also summarizes overburden movement during undermining and the estimated quantities of gas transported to the mine using FLAC3D and CFD modeling. The findings from this research effort highlight considerations based on specific mine conditions that may also be applicable to most longwall mines utilizing methane control systems.

The characterization of rare-earth resources in 3D is now possible using high-resolution X-ray microtomography (HRXMT) to describe ore texture and mineral phase composition. In addition, detailed texture analysis, including grain exposure and mineral association, can be described. Preliminary examination of a sample of Mountain Pass ore is reported to describe the spatial distribution of the mineral phases (calcite, barite and bastnaesite), particularly the grain size distribution of bastnaesite. The examination includes analysis of selected particle size classes to determine the appropriate size for liberation of the rare-earth mineral bastnaesite. Good liberation is expected to be achieved if the material is ground to a top size of -150 µm.

The introduction of Web 2.0 platforms (also referred to as social media), with their architectures of participation, has ushered in a new era of technological interaction and information exchange that is changing the nature of corporate-community communications. Web 2.0 platforms give users the ability to generate data collaboratively, meaning that more stakeholders maintain the expectation of being able to contribute to online dialogue. In light of these changes, it is important for business to consider how social media can be used strategically to enhance stakeholder relationships and increase business efficiencies. This article provides three case studies of how different stakeholders in the mining industry are strategically using Web 2.0 platforms to communicate with target audiences. The case studies are based on the experience of respondents and from website observations, which were undertaken as part of a thesis research project by the first author (Mullard, 2010), focusing on the application of social media in the mining industry.

The passage of an ore pulp through the froth flotation process results in the production, after dewatering, of a finely divided concentrate. This intermediate product Trust be handled to the subsequent process facilities via belt or other types of conveyors, hoppers, bins, chutes and feeders, and the like, Flotation concentrate has some difficult handling properties such as abrasiveness, sluggishness when moist, or fluidity when dry, These characteristics require the judicious selection or design of handling, equipment and the careful engineering of transfer chutes. It is to the special problems which are encountered in this in-plant handling procedure that this paper is addressed. The methods which will be discussed have beer. developed primarily for the handling of the froth flotation concentrates of copper, leap, and taconite iron ores, but may be generalized, with appropriate modifications, to apply to other similar metallic concentrate&. The controlled feeding of concentrates frog: bins and hoppers is covered alone with some of the techniques used to transfer concentrates from ore belt conveyor to another. Methods are described for unloading belt conveyors into bins or storage tiles, The reclamation from storage piles is also treated.

One possible alternative for disposal of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) by-products is use as backfilling support material in highwall mine adits. The finite element method was used to analyze the variation of stresses and displacements within and around a highwall adit backfilled with FGD materials. The engineering properties of the rock material and the optimum mix proportioning of the FGD materials were obtained from laboratory tests. Finite element analyses show that, for the case in question, the roof displacement would decrease about 48 percent and the peak stress could be decreased about 58 percent. The study indicates that fairly weak FGD materials can eventually lead to stability of backfilled highwall adits.

Blasting is the main method of production in many non-coal underground mining operations and produces multiple toxic gases as a result. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires mine operators to measure the level of toxic gases in mines as frequently as necessary to ensure they are below regulatory safety limits. The current practice uses portable gas monitors to check the concentrations of toxic gases after a fixed post-blast time. This paper studies the application of a gas monitoring system in the return entry of a limestone mine to determine a safe re-entry time. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted such a monitoring program in a limestone mine from September 2016 through May 2018. NIOSH/PMRD (Pittsburgh Mining Research Division) is endeavoring to develop workplace solutions to improve detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions. This study showed that the use of gas monitoring in the return air can be a useful tool at the mine operator’s disposal to detect and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions and also to reliably estimate the re-entry time. INTRODUCTION Underground miners are at risk of overexposure to toxic gases from various sources. Production blasting operations using explosives in underground mines are a source of multiple toxic gases that could be harmful and even fatal to humans if prolonged exposure occurs beyond the safe limits. According to Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, Part 57.5002 [1], metal and nonmetal mine operators must conduct gas, mist, and fume measurements as frequently as necessary to determine the adequacy of control measures to protect miners from overexposure to harmful gases. MSHA will inspect mine operators’ activities to verify the evidence of such measurements [2,3]. Continuous gas monitoring in the return air is an effective way to make sure that toxic gas concentrations at the working areas are kept below the regulatory limits before the return of miners. Toxic gases can enter the mine atmosphere from different operations, such as welding, combustion, and blasting. The main gases produced from blasting are carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Other gases are produced in small amounts and, therefore, were not considered for this study. Related regulatory and recommended exposure limits of CO, NO, and NO2 gases are summarized in Table 1 [4].

The central Dodoma region of Tanzania is one of the regions defined by the Tanzania Craton (TC). Although the Craton gold mineralization has been well explored and hosts most of the gold deposits in the country, the understanding of the mineralization potential of the Dodoma region is still an enigma. This study using trace elements geochemistry of soil samples aims basically at providing information for future exploration works in the region by delineating the possible mineralized zones, the pathfinder elements, and the lithological facies to target. Generally, there is an anomalous spatial distribution of a probable Cu-Au deposit in the N, NE, S, and SE parts of the region and are prospective areas worth exploring for gold from the Gaussian variogram models. The multivariate statistics shows that Cu, Pb, Zn, and Fe are the main pathfinder elements while searching for Au mineralization in the region. The gold deposit is most probably a Cu-Au porphyry type, although VMS type of Au deposit cannot be precluded in the area. The mineralization in the area is largely associated with tonalitic orthogenesis, tonalities, granodiorite, and granitic rocks with Cr-Ni-Co-V forming elemental association. This elemental association is similar to other gold bearing greenstone belts. The style of mineralization in the Dodoma region is similar to other gold deposits within the TC; hence, successful exploration methods in these ancient gold deposits like Geita and Kahama gold deposits can be adopted in the event of any further exploration exercise in the central Dodoma region.

The objective of the US Geological Survey’s mineral deposit database project (USMIN) is to develop a comprehensive twentyfirst century geospatial database that is the authoritative source of the most important mines, mineral deposits, and mineral districts of the US. Since May 2017, the project has focused on critical minerals. Data for critical minerals that are produced as products are relatively robust, whereas data for critical minerals that may be recovered as byproducts are commonly of much poorer quality. Similarly, more is known about critical minerals that occur in conventional deposits than where those critical minerals occur in unconventional deposits. For example, rare earth elements occur principally in deposits hosted by alkaline igneous rocks, but there is potential for their production from phosphate rock mining, which is less documented. Lithium (Li) has been recovered from pegmatites and brines, but other Li-bearing deposit types have been delineated that may go into production. Cobalt may be produced as a byproduct or coproduct from a wide range ofmineral deposit types, whereas rheniumis a byproduct of copper ore. Significant opportunities for research exist that could help identify new sources of critical minerals, and may also help increase production and recovery from existing sources.
