The sign of the surface charge of selected potassium soluble salt minerals namely KClO4 , K2SO4 , KNO3, and KCl was determined from nonequilibrium electrophoresis measurements and found to be negative for each of the salt. Dodecylamine flotation of these salts revealed that the concentration of amine required for flotation increases in the order KClO4< K2SO4< KNO3<KCl. Precipitationof the amine collector colloid was not required for flotation of the oxyanion salts and in this case it appears that adsorption of the dodecylamine cation is sufficient to create the hydrophobic surface state. The order for flotation is explained in terms of surface hydration of these respective potassium salts based on contact angle measurements and FT Raman spectroscopic characterization of water structure.

"The Riyadh Metro, commissioned by Arriyadh Development Authority “ADA” - the executive arm of The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh -, forms part of a new public transport-system of Saudi Arabia’s fast growing capital city. The Design & Build project consists of 176 km of Metro Line with 57 km of tunnels. Beyond the Design and Construction, an additional aim of the ADA is to introduce up-to-date methodologies and improve safety in construction projects. A systematic dilapidation survey of buildings and infrastructures was a prerequisite for designing the required instrumentation and monitoring tools. Site investigations required of existing methodologies and the use of geophysical methods for achieving reliable results. Large diameter TBM tunneling is challenging in hot weather conditions and karstic ground. The present paper shows how modern technologies for underground construction are introduced into the local industry and gives an outlook on future projects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. INTRODUCTION Riyadh, the capital city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is a fast growing city with more than 5.7 million inhabitants. The growth of the city is linked to the recent history of the Kingdom, where some initial milestones from the 1950’s can be highlighted: Revenue generation from the exportation of oil from the Kingdom; downstream investment of oil revenue in the reconstruction and development of the Kingdom; a general plan for the settlement of the Bedouins; the provision of a public electricity network for the city; the opening of the Riyadh - Dammam railway corridor providing a link from the capital to the Eastern Region; the commissioning of Riyadh airport (converted to Riyadh airbase, after the opening of King Khalid International Airport in 1983); and the relocation of ministries and other central government agencies in 1955. In 1974, The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh was established as the organizational, planning, executive and coordinating body responsible for the development of Riyadh. Arriyadh Development Authority “ADA”, established in 1983 is the High Commission’s executive, technical and administrative arm. The ADA is responsible for implementing the High Commission's organizational, planning, executive and coordinating decisions and missions. The ADA’s president is a member of the High Commission (ADA 2015). One of the remits of the ADA is the preparation and execution of a transport plan for the city of Riyadh."

More than ever before, mining projects are besieged from growing regulatory, political, public, and special interest group pressure. Administrative and legal appeals to permits and environmental documents can delay project start-up and add tremendous cost to mineral development. Some mining projects have been canceled given undue external constraints. Successful managers must learn to cope with these constraints. This paper will discuss controversy and present a number of environmental management tips to minimize the potentials for delay and to lessen the impacts from government and anti-mining pressures.

G.A. Carmody and L.B. Anderson We wish to comment on the paper by G.W. Heunisch (MINING ENGINEERING, January 1987), which raised several important points regarding treatment of acidic waste waters. This paper confirms, in part, tests carried out by Allyn Corp. Allyn is the manufacturer of the proprietary product Alka-Ment, one of the materials that Heunisch tested. The first point is the extreme sensitivity of the sedimentation rate on the nature of the treatment material used. This apparently results from differences in nucleation of the metal hydroxides, and is consistently higher for Alka-Ment. This decreased sludge volume is also observed when Alka-Ment is combined with flocculants, such as organic polymers (see Table 1). Our second point is to emphasize that Heunisch&apos;s work shows how dependent the sludge volume is on pH. It is common practice to overtreat AMD by raising pH to 9 or 10. This practice, in addition to being wasteful of material, actually decreases the density of the resulting sludge, probably by creating charged particles that do not readily coalesce. When treating with Alka-Ment, we recommend that the treatment be monitored by testing both pH and dissolved iron. For both tests, it is important to allow adequate time to elapse between treatment and measurement, so that dissolution of alkali, aerobic oxidation of iron, and precipitation of the metal hydroxides are nearly complete. Our tests have indicated that from 30 minutes to one hour is commonly required. Only in this way can a minimum pH be attained, with adequate treatment, denser sludge, and lower treatment rates achieved. Thirdly, Heunisch correctly recognizes that ASTM titration of Alka-Ment does not reflect the true treatment value available in a unit of Alka-Ment. Our work at Allyn indicates this is a most important consideration when evaluating various materials for the treatment of acidic waste waters. While we were unaware of Mr. Heunisch&apos;s work, we welcome comparisons between Alka-Ment and any competitive products readily available for field use. Allyn has hundreds of hours of laboratory and field data we are ready to share with interested parties treating acidic waste water.

Florida&apos;s electrical needs are served by 58 utilities of practically every type: six investor-owned, 34 municipal, 17 cooperative, and one federally-owned. They range in size from a small municipal system with a, 2 MW annual peak demand CD a large investor-owned utility serving about one-half of the state with an annual peak demand of 8,600 MW. (1),(2) These utilities are interconnected at several voltage levels with 230kV serving as the pre-dominant voltage for the bulk power transmission system. About 275 miles of 500kV circuits are found within two systems, but no tie-lines yet exist at this voltage. Due to Peninsular Florida&apos;s (that portion of the state east of the Apalachacola River) geographic location and shape, it cannot, at present, depend upon its interties with the remainder of the nation to completely support the sudden loss of the state&apos;s largest generator. Therefore, the utilities maintain a total amount of spinning reserve to cover for this single contingency outage at all times. Most of the state&apos;s electric utilities belong to the Florida Electric Power Coordinating Group (FCG) which, through its standing committees, coordinates the planning and operation of the member systems. Though a formal, centrally dispatched pool does not exist in the state, generating utilities which belong to the FCG&apos;s Operating Committee subscribe to an energy broker operation to maximize the savings that can accrue from economy interchange. Studies are underway, with participation from the staff of the Florida Public Service Commission, that are investigating both central planning and dispatch of the peninsula&apos;s electric utilities. Florida&apos;s electric load is mainly residential. During: 1976, 48.8% of all electrical energy use was by residential customers; 31.8%, commercial; 16.2%, industrial; and 3.2% for all other. By comparison, 32.7% of the United States&apos; load was residential, followed by 40.5% industrial, 23.0% commercial, and 3.8% other.

"For the Hollywood International Airport Runway Expansion Project at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the structural fire durability analysis was completed for a series of tunnels formed by roadway and railroad cells located under the runway structure. A systematic design approach was developed to mitigate structural damage during a fire event and arrive at a practical method to structural fire engineering that is compliant to NFPA 502. To ensure the NFPA 502 requirements are satisfied, the performance based approach was implemented and the engineering analyses were performed for the adopted design fire event. The analyses considered the facility’s unique features including its fire safety systems to determine applicable design fire curves for structural durability analyses. The paper also outlines the process of defining the project specific fire curves for a specific design fire scenario and summarizes the results of heat transfer and structural fire durability analyses. This approach was aimed to assist the owner and Authority Having Jurisdiction to achieve practical decisions to the tunnel facility fireproofing.INTRODUCTIONFort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Broward County, Florida is a major hub facility serving more than 23 million passengers annually. As part of the Airport Expansion Program, the South Runway (9R-27L) Expansion project aimed to meet ever increasing service demands via an increase to runway lengths. This necessitated the placement of one of the reconstructed runways on bridge structures over the existing U.S. Route 1 (US 1), a major north–south U.S. Highway that serves the East Coast of the United States, and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, thus effectively creating multiple tunnel cells beneath the subject runway. For this project, HNTB suggested a tunnel fire damage mitigation system that would protect the runway major structural elements from the design fire event that may happen within the tunnel cells. This paper addresses the issues related to the fire event originating within the tunnel encompassing the US1 highway only, and deals with requirements of NFPA 502 [5] exclusively. Therefore, while approaching the structural fire protection issues for the specific tunnel cells beneath the runway structure, the requirements of the American National Standard NFPA 502 (Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways, 2008 edition) were followed. "Current mine control stations are either single-position systems with high engineering effort or all-in-a-box solutions with low integration possibilities of third-party devices. Above all, both approaches are cost-intensive and not feasible for small companies. This paper shall be an inspiration of how to enhance the productivity and monitoring of an existing mining system in a modular way by introducing a proven technique of the ongoing digital revolution: A Wi-Fi network based on the communication protocol OPC UA. The starter kit consists of a single-board computer, a WLAN access point and any electronic sensor. INTRODUCTION The majority of the European mining industry is run by small and medium deposits (Europe Geology, 2017). This is due to the fact that most ore mines in Europe are widely distributed within the continent, are generally small and additionally they are often steeply inclined. Such ore bodies are normally mined with underground mining methods and must be excavated with high selectivity because of their small thickness. That is why the economy of scales, higher efficiency through bigger machines, cannot be used in most deposits in Europe except for lignite mines. It is important to find an alternative possibility to improve the efficiency of European mines for making them competitive internationally. For cost optimization and profit maximization it is necessary to use the trends of industry 4.0 and to broadcast these into the mining industry to reach a technological advantage. The goals of the EU within the Horizon 2020 funded project are to shorten the actualisation of the mine and block model to hours, improve the communication with Through the Earth (TTE) via very- or ultra-low frequency for long-time monitoring of the abandoned workings, and develop a cost-effective mine control station for optimization of mining processes in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as well. This paper deals specifically with the new approach for data acquisition, transmission and visualisation of a mine. SCADA AND ERP IN MINING There are already many Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) programs on the market, but these are normally not developed for the mining industry. At the moment this leads to three options. • To hire a system integrator, who shall build a complete control station for one mine that requires a high amount of knowledge in programming and cannot be maintained by the mining company itself. • To buy different types of out-of-the-box systems, whereby every system can include some of the used technology. In this case a huge amount of project engineers and operators – at least one per system and shift- is required. • To buy every machine and program from one company including the service contracts."

About 15,000 tonnes of zinc per year is present in the dusts and fumes produced in electric arc and BOS steelmaking, secondary copper refining and brass ingot making. Apart from the use of some copper-smelter fumes for zinc chemicals manufacture, zinc is not recovered and their disposal by landfill entails some risk of pollution by leach-out. The paper describes processes for recovering the zinc based on leaching and electrowinning. It was shown that the procedures normally employed for purifying zinc-electrolytes derived from primary sources are sometimes ineffective for secondary materials. Alternative process routes are proposed. Source materials were leached with acidic or alkaline reagents and solvent extraction was employed for electrolyte purification in addition to the usual techniques involving precipitation. Examples of integrated flow sheets for specific source materials are presented.

Approximately six hundred air sample measurements were taken at several U.S. underground metal/nonmetal mines in 1998 and 1999. This air sampling effort was organized by the Nevada Mining Association to evaluate mining conditions and to evaluate the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA) Proposed Rule on Diesel Particulate Matter Exposure of Underground Metal and Non-metal Miners. MSHA’s proposed air sampling method, NIOSH Method 5040, was tested under controlled conditions and under normal mining conditions. Unfortunately, NvMA sampling results have indicated that carbonaceous rock dust, oil mists and even cigarette smoking create severe sampling interference problems for NIOSH 5040.The main conclusion was that NIOSH 5040 did not distinguish between DPM and other airborne carbon particulate. Thus, it is not a reliable method of accurately and unequivocally measuring DPM in underground metal/nonmetal mines.

Catastrophic failures of dams and tailing storage facilities (TSF) have triggered the development of integrated ground monitoring concepts for hazard assessment, risk management and public safety. These concepts are based on knowledge and expertise of persons technically responsible for TSF. The aim is to combine this implicit and explicit knowledge with the data of in-situ- and remote sensors. Risk management for TSF must include a comprehensive monitoring program that integrates data from ground based-, air-borneand satellite-based sensors. Researchers at Technical University Georg Agricola (THGA) in Bochum, and EFTAS, Muenster, Germany, are fusing a variety of sensor data to enhance the capability and performance of TSF monitoring to ensure public safety downstream of TSFs. This paper describes the variety of sensors implemented in numerous research projects. It gives an outlook in terms of planned satellite missions with innovative equipment like hyperspectral sensors. The implementation of the data of these sensors in the analysis will increase the understanding of spatio-temporal impacts of mining activities. Future opportunities are explained by a datacube approach.

After several years of laboratory and field evaluations, it has been established that each frother has its own unique relationship among bubble size reduction, gas hold-up increase, froth stabilization and frother concentration. It has been shown that a frother?s hydrodynamic properties can be characterized using the relationship between the froth zone property froth height and the pulp zone property gas hold-up. The relationship is established in a bubble column run at a given air rate over a range of frother concentration. The use of relationships in frother selection and plant diagnostics is illustrated in a series of plant case studies.

Large is the applicable adjective here. The largest hydraulic shovel in the world, the largest copper mine in the world, the largest copper producing company in the world. The O&K RH 300 hydraulic excavator has been put into service to move overburden and mine ore at the Chuquicamata open pit mine of the Chilean state copper mining company, Corporation Nacional de Corbre de Chile (Codelco). A large shovel: Equipped with a 26-m3 (34-yd&apos;) rock shovel, the RH 300 is able to fill a 170-t (187-st) truck in three passes with cycle times of 30 seconds. A large mine: At present, the Chuquicamata pit is 4 km (2.5 miles) long, 2 km (1.2 miles) wide, and 520 m (1700 ft) deep from rim to bottom bench. The current 450 kt/d (496,000 stpd) of material mined will increase to 600 kt/d (661,000 stpd) when the expanded production rate is reached in 1989. (Chuqui Expansion details, p. 20). A large mining company: Codelco&apos;s total output from its two open pit and three underground copper mines is more than 1.1 Mt/a (1.2 million stpy) of copper. This makes Codelco by far the largest copper producer in the world. It accounts for about 15% of the Western World&apos;s copper requirements. Chuquicamata is located in the hot and arid Atacama desert of northern Chile. The mine is located 240 km (150 miles) northeast of the port city of Antofagasta. Mine elevation is 2700 m (8850 ft). Chuquicamata&apos;s known reserves of oxide and sulfide ores amount to more than 450 Mt (496 million st) of contained copper. There are also reserves of more then 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of contained molybdenum. Originally, Chuquicamata was a rail pit. The shovels loaded rail cars hauled by locis on tracks along the benches. During the 1970s, the rail transport was replaced by truck haulage. Crushing and conveying rock waste in the pit is the latest step in the continuing evolution of more productive and economical methods of materials movement. In 1990, the in-pit crushing plant will be in operation. The waste will be mainly transported out of the pit on belt conveyors rather than trucks. The system will incorporate a 9.6-kt/h (10,600-stph) semi-portable crushing station, a 14-km (8.7-mile) conveyor using 1.8 m (6 ft) wide heavy duty belts, and a tripper-spreader to stack the waste dumps. Since Chuqui went into production in 1915, more than 2.5 Gt (2.8 billion st) of material has been excavated. This includes nearly 1.7 Gt (1.9 billion st) of ore from which some 16.4 Mt (18 million st) of copper has been recovered. The Chuquicamata porphyry type ore body is an altered and fractured intrusive granodiorite or quartz-monzonite porphyry that carries the mineralization. The action of ground water on primary sulfide minerals in geo¬logic time has created oxide ores and a zone of secondary enrich¬ment. The oxides occur above the sulfide zone and are also mixed with the upper parts of the latter. At Chuquicamata, the current grade of 1.5% copper is expected to decline to about 1% by 1995. To maintain metal production at cur¬rent levels, it will be necessary to increase ore production rates by about 50%, as mentioned, to 153

INTRODUCTION From its beginnings in the first decade of this century, flotation has gradually moved to a predominant role in mineral separation. There are several reasons for this, the continuing trend toward treat¬ment of lower-grade and more finely disseminated ores being the major one. Not only has this been true for sulfide ores to which the process was first applied commercially, but also for most nonsulfide ores as well. A second factor has been the broad applicability of the process with respect to particle size; it is effective from 8 to 10 mesh to below 10m. Finally, more so than for any other separation process, flotation has almost no limitations in separating minerals. Gravity, magnetic, or electrostatic processes are either applicable to particular minerals, or to a restricted number of mineral combinations. Flotation, on the other hand, can utilize the wide range of surface chemical differences among minerals, and an equally wide range of reagents. The recent availability of selective flocculation capabilities on a commercial scale as an adjunct to flotation should remove one of the limitations to the process in the very fine particle range. History Although flotation was anticipated in a 19th century patent to Haynes, its first significant industrial uses were in the early 20th century in Australia. According to Hoover,&apos; the Pottter-Del-prat pro¬cess had a "measure of success" at Broken Hill&apos;s Block 14 mine in 1905-1906, and was definitely successful at the BHP Mine, where it produced 80,000 tpy of zinc concentrates. Both the Mineral Separa¬tion and the Elmore processes had early trials in Australia also, with both successes and failures. The first application in the United States was in 1911, when the Hyde process was used by the Butte and Superior Copper Co. on a zinc ore in Montana. By 1916 Hoover could list 46 applications to copper, lead, and zinc ores, mainly in the United States. Ten years later Taggart2 listed almost a thousand patents covering processes and reagents which with few exceptions laid the foundations for modern practice. Included were: sulfidizing of oxides; leach-precip¬itation-flotation; cyanides, sulfites, sulfides, and oxidants for selective depression of sulfides; starch, tannin, and glue as depressants; and xanthates, dithiophosphates, and oleic acid as collectors. Within an¬other 20 years, all of these were in commercial use along with amines for floating silica from phosphates, and synthetic frothers were com¬peting with pine oil and cresylic acid. Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. Betze-Post open pit operations, located in northeastern Nevada, have experienced slope instability attributed to the presence of generally weak rock mass conditions, local adverse structural geology and perched groundwater. Ground movements are monitored with acombination of optical survey, extensometers, inclinometers, and time domain reflectometry (TDR).The slope monitoring system at Goldstrike includes two robotics theodolites, which provide real-time coverage for all highwall areas. Survey instruments are housed in specially designed climate controlled shelters in locations where all slopes can be observed. A “remote” computer housed with each theodolite collects data. The “base” computer, located in the mine offices, is used to access data from the remote computers via radio modem.

This paper will discuss the operation and maintenance of Molycorp&apos;s Quests Mine ore conveyor system. The 1.2 m wide, steel cable-reinforced conveyor belts are capable of transporting 1089 kt/h of ore over a belt line distance of 3124 m with a vertical rise of 518 m. A portion of the conveyor runs in a 2057 m long underground decline on a 10° slope. Six 448 kW motors power the main 1.2 m wide belts.

Open-pit mines are constructed in materials characterized by the complete range of geologic materials from the most recent alluvial sediments to hard intact crystalline rock. The determination of stable slopes in recent alluvium is in the realm of soil mechanics, an established engineering discipline, well founded on theoretical development and years of substantiating experience. The analytical tools of the soils engineer are chiefly derived from continuum mechanics wherein load-deformation response is governed by mass properties of the substance. At the other end of the spectrum, slopes in hard unweathered rock can generally be analyzed in a straightforward manner by the methods of discontinuum mechanics wherein the properties and orientations of joints control the response of the material. This approach is exemplified by the classical work of Terzaghi (1962). In between these two extremes is a gray area of material types which are composed of stiff soil and incompetent rock. This area is of importance to the mining engineer, since a large portion of open-pit mines is excavated wholly or in part into incompetent rock. This paper describes an approach to pit slope design in incompetent rock in which the material behaves essentially as a continuum. A wide range of geologic materials from stiff soil to poorly indurated sandstone and shale to crushed or weathered crystalline rock appear to fit in this category. These materials all possess certain mechanical properties which must be accounted for in a realistic assessment of slope stability. These properties include nonlinearity, s tress -dependency, and inelasticity. Further considerations involve residual stresses and time-dependent seepage pressures where groundwa.ter is present.

A computer simulation of the automatic control of continuous mining machines has been prepared, similar to previous simulations of longwall mining systems and coal thickness sensors. The simulation allows for programmed variation of the horizon detection method, the azimuthal guidance system, the type and configuration of the miner, varying hardness in the unmined face material (leading to varying error in the machine heading), and the miner&apos;s cutting cycle. It simulates control of the miner in three axes. Use of the simulator makes it possible to anticipate problems arising from the complex character of underground mining, which include unpredictable multi-pass coupling and unpredictable variation in geological conditions.

Newmont has a large integrated operation in Northern Nevada with numerous mines, stockpiles, and processing facilities. There are over ninety defined metallurgical ore types and over sixty defined gold recovery process options. To take better advantage of the available synergies, a complete Nevada wide mine plan and process model along with a mixed Integer and Linear Programming optimization tool has been developed and implemented. This system is maintained and operated by a Nevada Planning Group. Standard in-house planning software tools and methods have been implemented at all mine sites. While increasing the effectiveness of planning in Nevada, these changes have allowed a significant reduction in overall Mine Engineering staff.

Pyhasalmi is a massive sulfide orebody located in central Finland. The mine has been in operation since 1962. The flotation concentrator produces Cu, Zn, Pb and pyrite concentrates. The plant has used an on-stream analyzer for process control since 1968. The original analyzer has overlived a few generations of minicomputers, but the analytical parts are essentially unchanged. The on-stream analyzer is a critical component in plant process control system, which has made Pyhasaltni one of the pioneers in the art of computer control and optimization of flotation plants. The paper summarizes the experiences gained from the use of the high performance elemental analyzer system and the proven benefits from the use of on-stream analyzers at a complex sulfide flotation. The aging analyzer is approaching the end of its useful life. A new state of the art analyzer system is undergoing testing at Pyhasalmi.
