The equilibrium nitrogen solubility in the CaO-SiO2system was studied by a slag-gas equilibration technique, in graphite crucibles at 1823K under a CO-N2 atmosphere. The nitrogen content of the slags was determined by the Kjeldahl method. A reliable technique was used to obtain an initial nitrogen content in the master slags, from the addition and pre-melting of silicon nitride. Reduction of silica by graphite was found to occur during the equilibration experiments, resulting in compositional changes of the slags. The results were extrapolated to equilibrium by kinetic evaluation of the data. The nitrogen solubility showed good agreement with the result of Suito and Sano, while Fruehan?s results were lower. However, the results of the present study do not support the maximum nitrogen solubility values found by Sano.

The development of the modern State and the growth of capitalism involves a complex process of interaction between cross-cutting structural dimension: first between politics and economics and, second, between market and hierarchy. Central to such developments are political economies of scale. Mineral specialization in the Third World developed within the framework of an international extension on oligopolistic structure of the advanced capitalist economies of Western Europe and North America. Up to the late 1960s, the world mineral and metallurgical industry was closely controlled by a handful of Western mining and industrial groups. To the extent that, foreign control of the mining sector was seen in the Third World producing countries both as the essence of foreign domination and as its major symbol. In some newly industrializing countries, the State took a more direct role in tying the economy and society together. Central to this process was the growth of large-scale finance capital. From early 1959to the mid-1970s, metal consumption in industrial countries expanded well beyond their domestic mineral endowments. And a free access to Third World minerals was a major element of the economic dynamism of these countries throughout that period. With the change in the characteristics of international investment, Africa has become less important as an outlet for capital exports of European countries. Actually, the African continent now receives only a very minor share of direct foreign investments of Western enterprises. International political economy is concerned first of all with the relationship between the economic and political domains across territorial boundaries. Second, attention should be drawn to the role of the State as the focus of decision-making in a system of competitive States, that is in turn, interdependent with a trans-national market economy in which mining and metallurgy are essential activities that affect the politics of the State, and how this in turn, rebounds on the politics of the international system. Understanding the role of the State must go beyond the glib pronouncements on the ?national interest?. How, and whose interest, the ?national interest? is determined, is precisely the problem. This implies a third theoretical problem that must be addressed: the linkage between the domestic and international domains (or levels of analysis), given that political-economic processes clearly cut across the lines of political decision-making constituted by the institutional structures of the State. Situating the State and economic interests within this vast ?state-society? complex that we call the global order will be a crucial problem for any theoretical approach that involves mining and metallurgy.

Despite the dramatic initial growth and success of their Ikhwezi Colliery near Delmas, Mpumalanga, Kuyasa?s experiences offer some sobering arguments for significant changes to mineral rights ownership, the attitude of financial institutions and government policy if South Africa is to have a dynamic and successful junior and small-scale mining sector.

We present a novel hybrid algorithm for quantifying the ore grade variability that has central importance in ore reserve estimation. The proposed algorithm has three stages: (1) fuzzy clustering, (2) similarity measure, and (3) grade estimation. The method first considers data clustering, and then uses the clustering information for quantifying the ore grades by means of a cumulative point semimadogram function. The method provides a measure of similarity and gives an indication of the regional heterogeneity. In addition, grade estimations can be obtained at different levels of similarity using a weighting function, which is the standard regional dependence function (SRDF). Physical testing of rock support for rockbursting conditions has been carried out for over 40 years. A review of this testing shows that it has been mostly component?based, rather than actually testing support systems. Further, it is concluded that none of the testing is truly representative of rockburst loading in a similitude sense. Similitude conditions are not achievable, mainly because the real conditions in a rockburst event, such as seismic source location and magnitude, wave frequencies, amplitudes, and interactions, are not all known. Because such information is not available, and because the results of all testing carried out to date have not been able to define, for support design purposes, the capacity of support systems, ongoing physical testing of rockburst support systems is essential. It is essential that the test should simulate, or actually take place in, a supported rock excavation. A rock support system is a combination of individual support components that work together to retain and contain the rock. In doing this, the components are subjected to loading by the rock and to interactive loading between one component and another. It is necessary to prove the capacity of such rockburst support systems by subjecting them to severe loading, as in direct blasting. The direct blasting approach, pioneered more than 40 years ago, probably still provides the greatest validity as a significant test of rockburst support capabilities, even though it does not simulate a rockburst. Direct blast testing of rockburst support systems in a surface environment, such as in a quarry or on exposed rock cutting surfaces, could represent a practical development of the approach, facilitating the execution and monitoring of tests.

Mintek was contracted by Oriel Resources plc in 2004 to conduct a preliminary assessment study on smelting ferronickel from the large but relatively low grade Shevchenko nickel ore deposit in Kazakhstan. A detailed feasibility study (?DFS?) was awarded to Bateman BV following promising results from the preliminary assessment study (?PAS?) and small-scale pilot plant test work. As part of the DFS, a total of 450metric tons of ore was collected from three different locations in the deposit and shipped to Mintek. After sampling, the bulk sample was prepared for smelting. This comprised crushing, screening and calcining with each step done separately for the three different lots. The chemical composition of the ore from the deposit is relatively high in silica and therefore falls out of the MgO to SiO2 range that is normally processed by pyrometallurgical means to produce ferronickel. The main objective of the testwork was to demonstrate that a method could be found and successfully applied to smelt these siliceous ores and produce an acceptable nickel-containing alloy. A 2-m ID DC arc furnace was installed with a twin-cathode (electrode) configuration to replicate the proposed commercial-scale furnace and also incorporated an advanced design of water-cooled copper panels in the lower furnace sidewalls to withstand the aggressive nature of the high SiO2-containing slags. The reductant used was a high-volatile coal from Karaganda in Kazakhstan. The reductant addition was adjusted to achieve a 90% recovery of nickel. In the assessment of the process metallurgy, some deviation from equilibrium conditions was observed. This deviation is ascribed to the intermittent existence of a smelting bath partially covered with feed during the testwork. Optimization of smelting conditions should result in the metallurgy (slag metal equilibrium) being closer to the theoretical predictions and make the production of a 20% nickel alloy possible at 90% nickel recovery. The solution for the successful processing of these siliceous ores was found in the attainment of the necessary operational stability through the control of arc length, operating temperature, open-bath smelting conditions and flux additions of up to 10% dolime for the most siliceous of the three ore types. The test work carried out by Mintek provided the basis for the process flow sheet and engineering design of the DC arc smelting furnaces for the Shevchenko Nickel project.

Mechanized mining can be experienced as a symphony by substituting the instruments for the different machines that each perform their own function and thus have different sounds. The drill-rig is the soloist around which all the other machines must play their part in harmony. Each machine can function on its own, but productivity is achieved only when all of the machines function in a holistic manner, as the different sounds of instruments form a symphony when playing together. To produce a symphony is to have the ability to put together all the pieces. It is the capacity to synthesize rather than to analyse. Today?s managers have to apply this harmonic way of thinking to make the system of mechanized mining work. In other words each of these people must have the ability of a conductor, whose job involves corralling a diverse group of notes, instruments and performers, and producing a unified and pleasing sound. At Modikwa Mine the introduction of the MAPS (Mine Activity Performance System) has allowed management to obtain a clear view of all the activities associated with the equipment. Through synthesis the issues that hampered productivity were identified and addressed to improve production and reduce costs.

Vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalyst has been utilized to oxidize SO2 to SO3 since the early 1900?s. This versatile product displaced the expensive and easily-poisoned platinum-based catalyst in nearly all applications by the 1930?s. MECS has been manufacturing the vanadium-based catalyst since 1925 and today is the leading supplier in the world of sulphuric acid catalysts in a variety of forms. Currently, MECS has world-wide customer/technical support for the catalyst as well as a dedicated catalyst manufacturing plant in Martinez, California. MECS also has a strong technical and research and development program dedicated to creating new and improved products and services. This paper will describe some of the technical details of vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalysts as well as offering a unique look into how caesium-promoted MECS catalysts can be used in single and double absorption acid plants, and off-gas plants running on irregular gas feeds, to reduce emissions and pre-heater run times. An update on MECS technical services extended for use in characterizing converter performance is also presented.

Published information is available on the radiological impacts of disposing of zircon sand in a landfill. Zircon flour by virtue of its finer particle size presents a different set of issues during disposal. This paper describes two options for disposal of such fine grained materials – namely incorporation into concrete aggregates and agglomeration by addition of cement. The study considers the radiological exposure of the public from such disposal methods and concludes that these options are viable alternatives for the safe disposal of waste zircon flour. The disposal of zircon into concrete aggregates at a rate of 10 per cent produces a sufficiently low effect to allow such aggregates to be used in building foundations or other such mass concrete applications. The use of cement agglomeration methods will also provide a safe method of landfill disposal provided at least 20 cm of soil cover is included.

Computer Integrated Mining (CIMG) is a process of using computer networks to transform islands of enabling technologies into a highly interconnected mining system. CIMG involves the integration of advanced technologies at various levels in the mine business to achieve higher flexibility, better quality of processes and control, and improved profitability. Justifying the benefits of CIMG are difficult as many of the advantages are derived from improved flexibility, quality, and control. Justification is based on the evaluation of the benefits to be gained, compared to the required capital investment. Management tools used in mining are currently inadequate in assessing the value of advanced technology whose benefits are primarily qualitative. A key aspect of successful implementation is management acceptance, which has to be won through the capability to justify the technology?s financial costs and the true value of all of its benefits. The manufacturing industry faced similar justification difficulties when adopting advanced technology in factories. A significant amount of funding and research was invested in developing management strategies and approaches to justification. Many of the problems that faced the transformation of the manufacturing industry in the late Eighties and early Nineties are now facing mining. The solutions derived for manufacturing may help mining in its transition to an increased reliance on integration technology. Reviewing the industrial history of computer integrated manufacturing identifies several tools and strategic frameworks that can be adapted for mining. Resue mining was practiced extensively in the East Rand in the first half of this century. The obvious benefits were that a higher grade of ore was trammed to the surface. The disadvantages were slow rates of face advance and an extremely labour-intensive method of mining. A collaborative effort by personnel from Avgold?s Target Gold Mine and Sandvik Tamrock has resulted in the design of a method of resue mining which can be totally mechanized. The purpose of this paper is to describe the methodology used and the proposed new mechanized resue mining method.

Raw material fed into a processing or refining plant is required to be uniform in composition for several reasons. When the mined ore is highly variable in quality the only way to ensure consistency is to homogenize the ore prior to the process. The problem is more complicated in the case of multiple ore sources. The idea behind the research is that theoretical blending ratios can serve not only to meet predefined specific criteria but also to reduce grade fluctuations of variables under consideration. In this paper, the problem is formulated as a quadratic programming problem, whose objective function is in quadratic form and constraints are linear. A case study was conducted on a data set from an iron orebody to demonstrate the technique. The objective was to minimize the blend variability in terms of each variable (in this study, iron, silica, alumina and lime) grade of ores extracted in three different production faces. The stockpile capacity, lower and upper limits of each variable satisfying operational requirements and non-negativity were constrained to the model. A modified simplex method developed by Wolfe was used for solving the blending and homogenization problem. The promising results can be used as apart of the stacking and reclaiming design. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The stability of a ferrosilicon dense medium suspension is one of the most important parameters to keep under control since it determines the density gradient of the medium in the separation zone and thus directly influences separation sharpness. The stability of ferrosilicon suspensions were characterized using settling tests employing a differential pressure method. Particles smaller than 45 µm and especially the ore fines played an important role in the settling behaviour of the solids. The work is being done using the Thermo-CalcTM software, and the database is being built up by obtaining good thermodynamic descriptions of all of the possible phases in the system. The database supplied did not cover all of the phases, and these had to be gleaned from literature, or modelled using experimental data. Similarly, not all of the experimental data were known, and where there were gaps or inconsistencies, experiments had to be undertaken. A preliminary version of the database was constructed from assessed thermodynamic data-sets for the binary systems only. The binary descriptions were combined allowing extrapolation into the ternary systems, and experimental phase equilibrium data were compared with calculated results. Very good agreement was obtained for the Pt-Al-Ru and Pt-Cr-Ru systems, which was encouraging and confirmed that the higher-order systems could be calculated from the binary systems with confidence. Since some of the phase models in databases were different, these phases had to be remodelled. However, more work is ongoing for information concerning the ternary phases present in the Al-Cr-Ru, Pt-Al-Ru (two ternary compounds in each) and Pt-Al-Cr (possibly more than three ternary compounds) systems. At later stage of the work, problems with the thermodynamic descriptions of the Cr-Ru and Pt-Cr binary systems were found. A programme of experimental work to overcome these has been devised, and is being undertaken. Keywords: Pt-based alloys, phase diagram calculations.

The paper deals with the technologies required for opening up anew idealized ultra-deep level mine. First the overall philosophy of accessing ore at ultra depths is discussed. Then the individual technologies which will be required are explored. Finally a detailed overview on one of the key technologies, namely tunnel support, is given. Because this project is still in its infancy, few definitive answers are provided; instead each of the envisaged technologies are briefly discussed, with emphasis on those which require the element of speed for rapidly accessing the ore body.

Mintek developed the MinataurTM leach-solvent extraction-precipitation technology as a cost effective, easily operated alternative to conventional gold refining processes. The technology was first commercialized at the Harmony Gold Refinery in 1997 to produce 99.99 per cent gold product and has subsequently led to development of various value-addition steps including the casting of various investment bars, gold wire drawing and gold potassium cyanide powder production. In addition to refining gold to high purity, if an appreciable amount of silver is present in the feed material it is also refined to 99.99 per cent purity. The major advantage that the Minataur? technology has over other gold refining processes is the relatively low gold lock-up and reduced operating costs. The operating cost1as at April 2001 for the expanded Harmony refinery (24-ton per annum gold production) was approximately half that of conventional smelting and toll refining. The extractant employed for solvent extraction is relatively cheap and highly selective for gold, making the technology attractive in situations where significant quantities of platinum group metals or base metals are present.

What separates the support of mining openings from the support of similar civil engineering structures is the fact that mine openings have to survive large deformations as a result of changing stress conditions induced by progressive mining. Steel fibres impart to concrete and shotcrete a high degree of ductility which not only allows the shotcrete and concrete linings to absorb important rock movements but also to increase its bearing capacity by a redistribution of the loads. A range of applications will be discussed technically and economically.

An independent technical audit by a consultant is part of the accountability process of publicly owned or publicly quoted companies when raising finance through share issues or loans or the sale of equity, and of banks or development funds when granting loans. Africa is undergoing a renaissance in investment in its mining industry. It is forecast that capital investment, in major mining projects in Africa, will be over US$ 4.4 billion, in the next few years. Most, if not all, of the capital to be raised will require an independent technical audit. The aim of this paper is to assist the management of mining companies seeking finance in appreciating the role of such technical audits. The reasons for such audits, especially to attract international investment, are listed. The role of the audit is explained in assessing the underlying robustness of the company as ?a going concern? and the viability of any ?expansion plans?. Its use is emphasised in establishing the underlying value of the company based on the mine life as supported by the mineral reserves. The independent consultant role is stressed as a representative of the parties in a finance deal who cannot, in practice, carry out their own detailed and specialized technical due diligence. The various components of a typical audit are examined with examples of critical matters which may require resolution. The definitions, which are used commonly in audits, in respect of competence and reserves and resources, as stated by various regulatory bodies, are compared.
