Irrigation of agricultural crops may be a cost-effective option for the utilization of gypsiferous minewater as it may also create an opportunity to produce crops during the dry winter season on farm sin South Africa, such as in Mpumalanga. In this study, intensive field monitoring systems were developed and implemented to assess the feasibility and sustainability of irrigation with gypsiferous mine water. Soil water and salt balance components, as well as crop yields, were monitored in field trials carried out at Kleinkopjé and New Vaal Collieries (Anglo Coal), and at Syferfontein (Sasol). Field measurements indicated that high crop and pasture yields can be obtained, provided fertilization and irrigation water management are appropriate. Soil water and salt balances indicated that considerable amounts of minewater can be used and considerable masses of salts can be removed through precipitation of gypsum in the soil profile. With appropriate management, water and salt runoff and salt leaching can be intercepted, thereby minimizing the impact on groundwater. The SWB model is being validated through on-going monitoring. This will allow the use of the SWB model at other sites to predict the long-term impact of irrigation with mine water on soil and groundwater, as well as to run scenario simulations in order to recommend sustainable management of irrigation with minewater.

In a paper presented at the Heavy Minerals Conference 2001 a laboratory scale investigation on the beneficiation of an ilmenite containing waste stream by magnetizing roasting was reported1.This waste stream contained a high concentration of ilmenite, which was contaminated by chromite and other gangue minerals. Interpretation of the results of the investigation was based on the assumption that during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate, under the oxidizing conditions, the magnetic properties of the chromite would remain constant. In this article the following hypothesis was tested: The magnetic susceptibility of chromite would remain constant during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate under the oxidizing conditions reported by Gouws and Van Dyk1. The results of this study indicated that the hypothesis is not true. The increase in the magnetic susceptibility is not significant though and it is expected that it will not influence the final ilmenite quality to a large extent. Based on the assumptions that the bulk magnetic susceptibility of the waste stream samples represents that of the ilmenite in the waste stream, and the bulk magnetic susceptibility of UG1 chromite that of the chromite in the waste stream, the results also served to confirm that the waste stream with a high chromite content should be roasted under oxidizing conditions, in a reactor with a well-defined retention time distribution (i.e. a fluidized bed reactor), at a roasting temperature of 750°C (rather than the higher temperature ranges of 800°C and 850°C).

This study reviews the concept of squeezing (large time-dependent deformation) in rock and investigates the possibility of this phenomenon becoming more pronounced in the planned ultra-deep mines of the South African gold mining industry. Although squeezing behaviour is not commonly found at the current depths of the gold mining industry, it is observed at Hartebeestfontein Mine due to a combination of weak rock and high stresses. Calculations based on the average strength of the Witwatersrand quartzites and the competency factor used to identify squeezing conditions in civil engineering tunnels, indicate that there is an increased risk of squeezing behaviour in ultra-deep mines. This will adversely affect the profitability of these mines and highlights the need for further research into the time-dependent behaviour of rock. Finally, the current support strategies in squeezing conditions are reviewed.

Mining companies are increasingly looking to the developing world for the next generation of mining projects, often in countries that have little or no previous history of large-scale mining. One of the major challenges for such projects is hiring?and retaining?personnel that have technical skills and experience in mining-related disciplines. Staffing a mine with an expatriate workforce is neither cost-effective nor sustainable, and many countries now insist that mining companies ?transform? the profile of their workforce to more closely mirror the demographic profile of the host population. The need to nurture mining-related skills in emerging mining nations is not solely limited to the workforce: there are also pressing economic and sustainability imperatives to develop capacity within local service providers such as consultants and contractors, as well as to facilitate informed engagement between mining companies, government and civil society. However, few educational institutions in emerging mining nations currently have the ability to offer practical training in mining-related disciplines. Local employees who are sponsored by companies to develop their skills through international study maybe impeded by language and cultural barriers, and may also be taught using course content that is of limited relevance to the specific challenges of their future working environment. This paper addresses the challenge of skills development and retention in emerging mining nations and uses examples from sub-Saharan Africa and the Asia Pacific region to explore practical means of developing capacity in mining-related disciplines. It examines the need for companies to implement strategies to develop local technical capacity in countries where they envisage a long-term operational future and also highlights the need to foster partnerships between academia, developmental institutions, mining companies, governments and civil society to establish the critical mass of mining-related skills required to nurture the development of a sustainable mining industry.

AngloGold Ashanti Metallurgy has recently been involved in the successful installation of intelligent, expert control systems on the milling circuits. The benefits of expert systems in these highly interactive circuits are obvious. Existing comminution tools, which have been developed and can now be incorporated into online control, include improved modelling techniques and understanding, robust and competent simulation methods, sampling techniques, and optimization methods. The minerals processing industry has seen the benefits of predominantly research-based centres turning their focus to commercial applications of comminution circuit modelling packages, which in turn can be utilized within expert control systems. Expert mill control has been successfully installed at AngloGold Ashanti South Africa?s Mponeng and Kopanang Gold Plants. Expert control has also been installed at AngloGold Ashanti?s West African Sadiola Mine operation. The implementation of the systems has produced a number of positive outcomes. Plant surveys usually result in the identification of sub-optimal areas, and the control philosophy is then configured to ensure that these areas (along with the entire circuit) are optimized and maintained. Outdated PID loops have generally resulted in oscillatory control with large amplitude deviations from set-point. Significant improvements in SAR Metallurgy operations have been realized, firstly through achieving stability in the load and cyclone control, and secondly through online identification and implementation of optimized set-point conditions for mill mass, discharge density, etc. Soft sensors are configured to accurately estimate parameters that were historically not measurable, viz. breakage rate, mill load condition, onlinekWh/t-75 microns, mill discharge density and cyclone overflow grading. The Mponeng Plant system achieved circuit stability and improved overall grind. The Plant was able to pay back the control installation after 3 months, based on the additional recovery obtained from the finer grind. The system at Kopanang Plant has also resulted in enhanced plant recovery as a result of a finer grind and a lower residue gold content. The payback for this system was calculated at approximately 6 months. AngloGold Ashanti Metallurgy is currently expanding the installation of expert control to its other operations. It is also evaluating the performance of various suppliers of advanced control systems.

Contract is a PC-based software program designed to satisfy the main features that have been identified to be lacking from cost estimation systems currently in place in the Australian coal industry. Contract was developed in conjunction with an Australian contracting company to refine the existing core structure used by the company for project evaluation. The key feature of Contract is the availability of analysis functions to explore multiple options within a contract project by altering identified variables. The ability to update project files has been incorporated into Contract to ensure that it is user-friendly and relatively simple to use. Lists of mining equipment and consumables are stored in MS ACCESS database files, along with the supplier details for each item. Each time a project is initiated there is a dynamic link to the database files and the most recent current information is retrieved and linked with the project. Contract provides an option to calculate the changes in metre unit cost as a function of the average development cost. Keywords: Contracting, cost estimation, sensitivity analysis.

The gold mining industry in South Africa stands to benefit much from the implementation of the self-directed work team concept. Its introduction implies flatter hierarchical structures, empowerment of the workforce and increased participation. Research indicates that half of the initiatives to implement self-directed work teams, however, fail, and it is therefore imperative for companies to be aware of the factors impacting on the effectiveness of self-directed work teams in order to focus on these early in the implementation phase. The objective of the study was to qualitatively determine these factors. Semi-structured interviews based on the phenomenological method were carried out. The sample included members of, and individuals involved with, self-directed work teams (N= 26) from a large gold mining company in South Africa. Results show that most respondents rated the availability of resources to do their work as the most important factor affecting their effectiveness.

A new way of producing low-silicon ferrosilicon from iron-ore materials in a new type of aggregate-oxygen reactor is presented. The oxygen reactor process is based on using the calorific combustibility and reducibility of carbon materials inside the aggregate. The key to the process is successful post-combustion of carbon monoxide above a layer of a solid coke bed. Initially the possibility of production of grades of ferrosilicon containing 20 to 25% Si (FeSi20-FeSi25) was studied on a laboratory model of the oxygen reactor. Quartz sand and iron ore concentrates (from Russia and India) were used in the laboratory tests. This test work demonstrated that a ferrosilicon grade FeSi15 could be obtained directly from raw iron ore (containing 75.9 % Fe2O3 and a maximum of 23.8 % SiO2) without using rich iron-ore concentrates. The process was successfully tested on a pilot furnace at Serovsky metallurgical plant. Very promising results and efficiency parameters were achieved. The consumption of materials for 1t of ferrosilicon (15 % Si) production was as follows: 1567 kg raw iron ore, 591 kg of coal (in a composition of ore-coal briquettes), 299 kg of coke (for coke bed formation), and 815 m3 of oxygen.

Selective leaching of phases in charge chrome is used in a variety of industrial processes for the production of chromium chemicals. A mineralogical study was made of a range of local charge chrome samples, at various stages of leaching in sulphuric acid (20g/l at 90°C), using mainly a scanning electron microscope (SEM) together with an energy-dispersive spectroscopy analyzer (EDS), and X-ray diffraction techniques. It was found that the leaching behaviour of the different types of charge chrome depends largely on the nature of the secondary phases, which in turn depends upon whether the silicon content is above or below 4 per cent by mass. The leaching behaviour of high-chromium ferrite is anomalous, and it is postulated that the process is analogous to the corrosion of brass by dezincification. To recover the coal resources of high-sulphur anthracite in Jincheng Mining Area, underground coal gasification (UCG) of No. 15 seam in Fenghuangshan Coal Mine was proposed. The feasibility of the project was confirmed by investigations of occurrence conditions, coal properties, and roof conditions, as well as experimental studies and theoretical analysis. It was found that UCG technology is appropriate to be adopted in the mining of the No. 15 seam, due to the stable rock conditions, simple geological structure and hydrogeology, the high carbon content of the coal, non-cohesiveness, medium-thermal stability, high ash fusion temperature, and weak reactivity with CO2. Further factors are the characteristics of the immediate roof, which consists of 9.11 m of limestone and mudstone with a compact structure and low permeability, and 4.27 m of dominantly mudstone with low permeability.

"Although the first large-scale application of copper recovery by solvent extraction (SX) took place in Zambia in the early 1970s, it is only in the last decade that this technology has become widely employed in this part of the world and is now a mainstay unit operation in most copper hydrometallurgical flowsheets. The mineralogy of the ores in the African Copper Belt, and hence the characteristics of the African leach liquors, differ significantly from those in Chile and the south-western USA, where copper SX has had a long and successful history. These differences provide operators, metallurgists, reagent vendors and engineers with many challenges: new approaches are needed to adapt this technology for successful implementation in this region. This paper examines typical operating practice in the African Copper Belt, discusses differences compared with other parts of the world and looks at some of the challenges and opportunities presented by these flowsheets. INTRODUCTION Following the success of the Rancher’s Bluebird and Bagdad solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX–EW) operations in Arizona in the late 1960s, the Tailings Leach Plant at Chingola, Zambia became the first large-scale copper SX plant in the world, commissioned in 1974. Despite the equipment design now being outdated, this plant still continues to operate successfully, indicating the versatility and adaptability of this technology. Today, there are some 75 copper SX operations worldwide with cathode production above 10 kt/a. The top ten producers currently account for some 40% of the global 4.3 Mt/a SX–EW copper production. South America (predominantly Chile and Peru) is the largest copper cathode-producing region, with annual production of some 2 Mt. The Central African Copper Belt (Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)) is second, with cathode production of 1.2 Mt/a and North America (USA and Mexico) third, producing close to 0.8 Mt/a Cu (Cytec data, 2014). The remaining 0.35 Mt/a comes from all other regions combined (referred to as “Rest-of-World”). Current and future operations in Zambia and the DRC are summarised in Figure 1. The industry in this region is characterised by a large number of small (3 to 20 kt/a) plants, mainly Chinese-owned, and a few very large (>200 kt/a) operations, owned by major multinational corporations. This paper examines typical operating practice in the African Copper Belt, discusses the differences compared with other parts of the world and looks at some of the challenges presented by the conditions, as well as innovations in flowsheets, reagents and operating conditions that have been introduced in these circuits."

Tight control of electrode paste additions, hard and soft paste levels, baked zone position and electrode temperatures are integral to superior Söderberg electrode management practices. Paste addition is typically effected through briquettes, cylinders or large blocks. Each electrode paste form has its advantages and disadvantages, but probably a more crucial element from an electrode control perspective is the frequency and amount of electrode paste addition into a Söderberg electrode column. The detrimental effects of excessive soft paste levels leading to Stokes? Law segregation of paste in the electrode column are well documented, while several operators have effectively implemented the use of electrode thermocouples to monitor paste temperatures and automated slipping algorithms to control baking conditions within electrodes. Somewhat less well appreciated are the negative influences of inadequate soft paste levels, especially when coupled with excessive paste cylinder or block additions and resulting high hard paste levels. The alternative of insufficient hard paste levels and associated overheated electrode paste must also be considered, and can contribute to paste segregation directly. This condition also has the potential to generate gas mixtures in the electrode column that are concurrently a potential health hazard, while being prone to spontaneous combustion. Results of industrial trials on electric furnaces using Söderberg electrodes in a variety of applications from ferrochromium, to ferromanganese and even platinum-bearing base metal sulphides smelting are presented to illustrate the influence of paste loading practices on the dynamics of hard and soft paste levels. Possible electrode failure mechanisms attributable to inadequate paste level control will be discussed through some industrial examples. Suitable paste loading practices to mitigate the risks of inappropriate paste levels and associated electrode incidents are presented.

Two Rivers Platinum Mine (TRP) is a 55:45 joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Impala Platinum, respectively. TRP is situated on the farm Dwarsrivier 372KT, in the southern sector of the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex. Dwarsrivier is underlain by rock formations of the Critical Zone (Winterveld norite-anorthosite) and the Main Zone (Winnarshoek norite- anorthosite). Two economically significant PGE-bearing layers namely the Merensky Reef and the UG2 chromitite are found within the upper Critical Zone. These are approximately 140 m vertically apart, separated by a series of barren norites and anorthosites. At Two Rivers Platinum, only the UG2 chromitite layer is currently being mined for PGEs. The UG2 sub-outcrops north/south along the Klein Dwarsrivier river valley with a very gentle dip to the west of 7º?10º. At Two Rivers the UG2 averages about 120 cm in thickness, overlain by a waste pyroxenite parting about 20 cm thick, above which is a leader seam about 20 cm in thickness. The mineable cut consists of the leader seam, the waste pyroxenite parting, the UG2 chromitite layer including 25 cm of pegmatoidal pyroxenite footwall, below the UG2 reef to a minimum of 185 cm trackless mining cut. The mining method is a mechanized bord and pillar layout, which will yield a total of 185 000 tons at full run of mine production from the underground UG2 mine.

Heavy metals and sulphates in acid mine drainage (AMD) can beadsorbed onto bentonite clay, leaving clean water and a heavy metal loaded clay precipitate as products. Due to the toxicity of heavy metals, the clay could not be disposed of safely in the past. A method was thus required to remove the heavy metal content from the clay. Acid leaching was proposed to liberate the heavy metals from the loaded clay. Sulphuric, nitric and hydrochloric acid were considered as lixiviants. Loaded clay samples were leached over a range of pH values from 1 to 3.5 to identify an optimum leaching condition. From the results it was found that metals can berecovered from loaded bentonite clay by means of acid leaching and the optimum pH for heavy metal liberation was found to be 2.5, with uranium as an exception, being optimally leached at a pH of 3. This allows for the possibility of selective leaching. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that the clay structure did not deteriorate significantly during acid leaching, suggesting that the bentonite could be reused. The treatment of AMD with bentonite clay, and subsequent acid leaching of the clay, is a sustainable solution, and current outcomes could possibly lead to industrial implementation of the process during water purifying and metal recovery from waste streams. "Four sulphide minerals - pyrite (FeS2), pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS), pentlandite ([Ni,Fe]9S8), and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) - contain the base metals and most of the iron in concentrates of platinum group metals (PGMs). In the pyrometallurgical processing of PGM concentrates these sulphides form a matte during smelting, and iron and sulphur are removed from the matte during the converting process. This paper discusses the roasting of Merensky concentrate in air before smelting, with the purpose of reducing the matte load to the converter.Roasting tests were conducted in a bench-scale rotary kiln at temperatures from 350°C to 700°C. The concentrate tested contained 17.4% sulphur and consisted of 23% pyrrhotite, 16% pentlandite, 11% chalcopyrite, and 2% pyrite. The particles were fine (d50 = 22 µm), and all the sulphide particles were liberated. Roasting in air at 550°C and 650°C for 20 minutes removed respectively 60% and 70% of the sulphur. The iron in the sulphides was oxidized to Fe3O4 (magnetite) at temperatures below 500°C and to Fe2O3 (haematite) at temperatures above 550°C. At 700°C the bed sintered and copper oxides formed. At temperatures below 450°C oxidation was incomplete: pyrrhotite remained and only 30% of the sulphur was removed. Smelting tests were conducted to assess matte fall and the deportment of copper and nickel to matte. It was evident that roasting resulted in lower matte falls (a drop of approximately 60%) compared with matte falls from unroasted concentrate. The iron and sulphur levels in the matte were reduced to below 3.5% and 22% respectively.This paper also briefly describes the mechanisms by which pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite are oxidized during roasting. For chalcopyrite, the mechanism proceeds through an intermediate solid solution phase, which extends from Cu1.02Fe1.04S2 to Cu2.04Fe0.72S2 to a copper-rich solid solution of bornite (Cu4Fe1.4S4-Cu2S). The oxidation of pentlandite proceeds through a monosulphide solid solution (Ni0.39Fe0.53S-Ni0.74Fe0.15S) to a solid solution of heazlewoodite ([Ni,Fe]3}xS2). These mechanisms are explored in relation to chemical thermodynamics and microstructures."

TauTona Mine (the renamed Western Deep Levels East) is using a longwall mining method with stability pillars to extract the Carbon Leader Reef at a depth ranging from 2097 metres to 3456 metres below surface. Seismic activity and the complexity and hazards associated with negotiating geological features at great depth pose the most severe hazard to deep level gold mining in South Africa. It impacts negatively on safety and the profitability of the mining. The critical success factors in longwalling at depth are: ?Sound mining strategies and face shape control ?Ensuring follow behind development infrastructure is kept up to date ?Support system design as a strategy to effectively limit the serious effects of damaging seismicity. This paper describes the following: ?Implementation of the required mining strategies ?The evolution of a new stope support system and problems associated with its development and implementation. How this support system was adapted for the successful negotiation of major geological features with known seismic potential and problems encountered ?Current initiatives to optimize follow behind development infrastructure ?Current initiatives in designing a new gully support system and problems experienced with its development and implementation. Finally, this paper will deal with the way forward, briefly covering areas like the above-mentioned gully support system, the proposed phased introduction of technology, and the use of alternative mining layouts.

Recently, work was carried out by the Shotcrete Working Group to study anisotropy in steel fibre reinforced shotcrete using strain-controlled, compressive strength testing methods. The shotcrete materials used and specimen preparation procedures as well as testing methods are described. The test results are discussed and it is concluded that, because of the anisotropic nature of fibre reinforced shotcrete, it may be worthwhile investigating the degree of such anisotropy in practice using strain-controlled, strength testing techniques.
