Recent research into the prediction of mining-induced seismic events by the monitoring of small microseismic events at Western Deep levels Gold Mine is described. Measurement and interpretation techniques and results are presented. It was found that the occurrence of the larger events near longwall faces on the Carbon leader reef is preceded for some hours by an increased rate of microseismic emission and spatial concentration of the microseismic events in the zone of eventual failure. The research is currently being expanded with the aim of producing a practical rockburst early-warning system.

SYNOPSIS The paper opens with brief descriptions of the history, occurrence, and regional geology of South Afri¬can zinc deposits, and follows with descriptions of the resources, mining methods, and processes for the concentration of the sulphide minerals and the extraction of zinc as practised in South Africa. The end uses in the form of alloys or as salts are given in some detail. Statistics on the production and consumption of zinc in South Africa are given, and the current market situation and future prospects are discussed briefly.

The paper presents details of the costs and outputs being achieved by South African mechanized tunneling and stoping drillings. The information was gathered from various hard-rock mining and tunneling operations ranging from deep-level gold mines to shallow base-metal mines. The survey included older pneumatic rigs and the newer electro-hydraulic rigs, but excluded shaft drilling and the stope drillings that were developed recently for narrow reefs. The information presented is intended as a guide to those having to decide whether to use mechanized drillings and, if so, what type and quantity

From a consideration of the functional requirements of a stope-support pack, simple design principles were developed. The material and dimensional properties of the different components of the pack were determined from a series of laboratory tests. The most important requirement for an adequate pack is that the cushioning layers of timber between the concrete brick layers should provide sufficient transverse reinforcement. The tendency of the compressed timber to creep is shown to be a serious limitation to pack performance and must therefore be an important consideration in the overall design of supports.

In the first section, a brief background to the practical and theoretical aspects of bacterial leaching is presented. Descriptions are given of present and potential methods for exploiting bacterial leaching in metal-winning. In the second section, the results of recent research are presented. The aim of this work was to obtain a greater understanding of the mechanism of bacterial leaching of sulphide minerals. Bacteria were observed to catalyse leaching reactions by oxidising ferrous ions to ferric ions, by removing protective films at the mineral surface and by depolarising cathodic areas.

The results of a series of measurements of accelerations and guide-roller loads made on mineshaft conveyances are given, together with the predictions of these accelerations and loads based on a computer programme. The analysis of the measurements is described, and the results of the measurements and computer predictions when compared show reasonable agreement. Some parameters that increase the guide-roller loads are identified, and their effects are studied, together with some comments on the total loads. Finally, a possible format for a design specification is discussed, and some tentative design values are given.

PRENDERGAST (Visitor) Iron-working was a widespread economic activity in Iron Age Rhodesia, and merits historical and metallurgical investigation. However, the research done so far has been incidental and poorly disseminated. This paper reviews the available evidence and the ways in which it can be interpreted by archaeologists and historical metallurgists. INTRODUCTION The Miller chlorination process has assumed a preeminent position in the refining of gold bullion, a position it has maintained for over half a century. In the early sixties considerable interest was aroused by the idea of producing a consistently high grade bullion at the mine smelthouses themselves. However, as the use of chlorine in industrial plants is associated with considerable hazards, oxygen was considered a natural alternative, apart from bing less expensive than chlorine. Partial refining at the mine smelthouses would considerably decrease the requirements made on Rand Refinery Limited as well as indicating the possibility of reducing final refining costs. An added factor would be the purer silver chloride obtainable, after prior removal of the base metals by oxygen injection, which would facilitate the production of high-purity silver. The free energies of formation of the oxides of the metals;- silver, copper, lead, zinc, iron and bismuth indicate that, with the exception of silver, these metals should be capable of removal as oxides by oxygen injection. Rose1 had shown that during injection of gold bullion, considerable loss of silver to the boraxsilver slag occurred and, furthermore, that copper removal was not efficient and oxide attack on the refractories was severe. Plant test work2 had confirmed the difficulty of copper removal, but had shown that zinc and lead were almost completely removed. The difficulty of copper removal by oxygen injection warranted further investigation. Also, the high decomposition pressure of silver oxide suggested that by suitable control of the slag composition it might be possible to reduce to very small proportions the silver carried into the slag as oxide. The oxidation of copper by oxygen injection and subsequent dissolution of the oxide in a slag may occur according to the following reactions; Reactions 4 and 5 were considered because of the relatively high solubility of oxygen in molten silver and silver alloys. Thermodynamic data indicate that there is little possibility of any reaction involving the formation of CuO occurring at temperatures above 1 000 °C. To ensure that the operative reactions 1 and 4 take place to the maximum extent, the following factors He significant. (a) an increase in the activity of the copper in the bullion, (b) an increase in the partial pressure of oxygen in the system, (c) an increase in the activity of the oxygen in solution in the metal, (d) a decrease in the activity of cuprous oxide in the slag. From practical considerations, the operative variable most easily susceptible to control is the composition of the slag. SOLUBILITY OF COPPER OXIDES IN BOROSILICATE SLAGS Very scanty information exists on systems containing copper oxides but the indications are that slags containing considerable amounts of boric oxide would possibly prove to be the best solvents for cuprous and cupric oxides. This is attributed to the fact that the activities of copper oxides are much lower in boric oxide slags than in slags in which silica is the main network former. The number of possible slags containing boric oxide was limited by consideration of liquidus temperature, viscosity, corrosive action on refractories, volatilization, and ultimately cost (for industrial application). Slags in the systems soda-boric oxide-silica and lime-boric oxide-silica were selected paying due attention to the above limitations. Additions of 5, 10 and 15 per cent cupric oxide were made to the finely ground, premelted slags. These mixtures were then reground and 2g quantities held in re crystallized alumina crucibles at temperatures of 1150°C and 1 250°C respectively for 30 minutes. The crucibles were removed from the furnace, rapidly cooled, cut in half longitudinally, and a thin section taken from one half was subjected to microscopic examination.

It is generally accepted that South African coal mines have gone through the mechanization of most of its underground mines, and while there certainly were a lot of productivity improvements, the lack of visibility on these machines operating underground still leave vast areas for improvement. The average actual cutting time still remains very low, in the 30 per cent area, which leaves significant improvement possible. Currently all analysis is carried out using hand-written reports. Unfortunately this is subjective and often inaccurate because of human interpretation. In addition in order to avoid costly component failure, a monitoring system is required to warn of eminent failures and condition monitoring. The challenge faced was to supply and install a system that was ‘Open’ and could be retrofitted to existing machines in operation because of the current standard of communication links to the underground sections. In addition it was intended to use, existing ‘off the shelf’ software and hardware and adapting this for the harsh underground mining conditions wherever possible in order to reduce costs. As development occurred, as with all technology, doors opened to other opportunities such as, remote access data logging and Internet based reporting. We focused on the Voest Alpine Bergtechnik (VA) range of continuous miners, as need arose to achieve the desired cost improvements because of the strategy of service contracts the subsidiary company, Voest Alpine Mining & Tunnelling (VAMT) offer the mining industry in South Africa. This paper describes a data logging system that has been installed on various continuous miners that provides data in real time, on line, and that could be expanded to any electrically supplied underground mobile or stationary mining machine.

"South Africa is well endowed with a plethora of valuable minerals, as well as being of world renown for its significant ecological and cultural resources. The unfortunate reality is that these two important attributes often come into collision when developmental decisions are made. Robust environmental planning tools are required to guide such development in areas of heightened sensitivity. Environmental management frameworks are one of the tools that can attempt to achieve the desired developmental and ecological balance by utilizing early identification and mapping of sensitive ecosystems and resources to assist in pre-empting potential future land use conflicts. This paper unpacks the characteristics of environmental management frameworks and further investigates their potential, as well as its current design and implementation challenges. The findings show that environmental management frameworks have the potential to provide meaningful resource information to decision-makers on the opportunities and risks of developments in sensitive areas. They further provide a platform and process through which local stakeholders can voice their opinions and collectively drive the developmental priorities of the identified area.IntroductionAt the core of a harmonious and prosperous society is the balancing of a broad spectrum of needs, rights, and imperatives. As South Africa’s resource and energy needs expand, it becomes increasingly important to safeguard environmental rights and ensure sustainable development through creative measures. The State’s drive for accelerated development to meet the targets in the National Development Plan 2030 is contributing to the growth of invasive developments in previously undeveloped areas. The unfortunate reality is that the heightened tensions between rapid economic growth and environmental sustainability are threatening sensitive areas."

Introductory remarks by author When Mr R. C. J. Goode suggested preparation of a paper in the area of manpower utilization in South Africa, I was, while keen to accept his invitation, somewhat hesitant for two reasons. Firstly, I recognized the great difficulty of making a factual contribution, because of the lack of really relevant statistical information available, the fact that much of it is out of date, and the difficulty of researching and co-ordinating it and of evaluating a statistically sound resultant viewpoint. Experience in the actual preparation of this paper has done nothing to change my view in this respect. Secondly, it is obvious that a paper presented to a meeting of this Institute, by a member of it, would be expected to devote considerable attention to the subject in the mining industry. I am not directly employed by the mining industry, although my company has carried out extensive assignments for various sectors of it both in this country and in other parts of the world, since the 1939-45 war. I am more conscious than most of the tremendous technical and managerial skills at the disposal of the industry in this country, and consequently am equally conscious of the hazards of publishing facts and figures which might be taken to indicate any criticism of performance. I am aware that some of the information that I am about to present may indeed generate comment, and possibly even critical comment. I would like to be regarded therefore in presenting this information, as a member of the group, rather than an external critic. Under these circumstances, comment can only be constructive, and this is my earnest hope. The contribution of my paper, if contribution there is, will I hope be in the area of assessing labour productivity in mining, and in secondary industry in such a way that the performance of each against its own past results is comparable. This task has not for the present been to my knowledge attempted, and in advance I wish to take out authors' insurance against legitimate criticism from professional economists and others, by stating that I am well aware of possible short-comings in the arguments. Nevertheless I believe that under the circumstances I have, with the important assistance of several people, been able to take the subject further than has been the case in the past. Finally, I have related productivity in the mining industry and in secondary industry to a target of productivity in the Republic of South Africa. I was fortunate recently in being able to attend a series of lectures by a prominent economist in America. He introduced his subject by calling it 'A broad survey of macro-economics'. Perhaps I might be permitted to describe my paper, in the same idiom, as 'The macro-management of labour'.

While coal can be used as a chemical feedstock instead of oil for the production of the petrochemical based commodities that are so important to our modern way of life, the impact that coal is going to make on the world-energy scene is without doubt its more important role in the short- to medium-term. After inflation, energy is probably today's most talked-about and controversial economic issue. It is a plentiful supply of energy that has permitted each of us to live a life of convenience that is matched only by the most fortunate of the aristocracy in history.

For many of us, formal academic education slows abruptly when we leave a tertiary institute of learning. We start applying and connecting newly acquired knowledge with the practicalities of a career, and begin to think in a manner that is technology-oriented. Subsequent vocational advancement is offered by the .many mining and professional journals that circulate through departments, and by conferences and schools that are organized in-house and via the SAIMM and other professional institutions. The importance of these schools cannot be overstated: they combine people and developing technology to the benefit of the industry as a whole.

To B. K. Martus I discussed several points raised by Mr Martus in my reply to Professor Krige*. Mr Martus discusses several possible interpretations of optimum South African sales, but in my paper these sales refer to the sales level that maximized the working profit of the whole South African gold-mining industry over the past eleven years. Mr Martus also seems to be under the impression that the paper deals with the future. While there may be references to the future, and some implications for the future may be obvious, the paper deals essentially with the past eleven years.

The 13th Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions (CMMI) was held in Singapore from 11th to 16th May, 1986. Tours to Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, and Japan took place the week before and the week after the Congress. Registrations By far the largest contingents at the Congress were from Australia (157 delegates and 65 affiliates) and South Africa (127 delegates and 99 affiliates). The other 25 countries represented at the Congress accounted for 118 delegates and 37 affiliates. Thus the total registrations amounted to 402 delegates and 201 affiliates.

A theoretical comparison is made between point-attack and wedge-shaped picks in regard to their cutting efficiencies in coals having different strength characteristics. With specific energy as a criterion of cutting efficiency, it is shown that a mathematical expression can be derived for the assessment of the relative performances of these two groups of picks as a function of coal-strength parameters and pick-tip angle. The ratio of tensile to compressive strength of coal is found to play a significant role in the determination of relative cutting efficiencies, lower ratios favouring the use of point-attack picks.

Introduction and Background For many years people were aware of the vast deposits of titaniferous magnetite containing vanadium in the Bushveld Complex. From 1957 onwards some exploitation of this ore was carried out by Minerals Engineering of S.A. (later the Vantra Division of Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation Limited), who produced vanadium pentoxide via a roast-leach process. Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy The Finance and Executive Committees of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy have agreed that members of SAIMM should be invited to register at all future CIM meetings at the same rate as CIM members.

A review of copper hydrometallurgy by J. C. PAYNTER, B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.) (Visitor) Copper hydrometallurgy is discussed with special reference to the treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates under South African conditions. The following processes are described and illustrated: Sherritt Gordon's ammonia pressure leachilng, the Arbiter Process, sulphuric acid pressure leaching, roasting processes, the Cymet Process, and the ferric chloride process developed at the National Institute for Metallursy. These processes are then compared with respect to the form of sulphur produced (elemental sulphur or sulphate), the character of the iron product and the handling of different types of ore.
