Optimal cut-off grade is one of the most critical parameters in open-pit mine design because it defines the ore and waste and thus determines the maximum net present value possible from the mining operation. Although the algorithm presented by Lane (Choosing the optimum cut-off grade. Colorado school of Mines Quarterly, vol. 59, no. 4, 1964. pp. 811-829) is the most common one in the literature, it does assume constant capacities of the mine, processing, and refinery. In this paper, Lane's original algorithm has been modified to consider variable processing capacities in order to determine the optimal cut-off grade in open-pit mines. The new algorithm proposed here is compared to both Lane's original algorithm and to a previous modification that incorporated rehabilitation costs into the cut-off grade estimation. The algorithm proposed here that permits variable processing capacities is shown to be superior for the determination of optimal cut-off grade to both these previous versions. In addition, a computer-based program was developed in Microsoft Office Excel© to calculate the optimal cut-off grade as proposed here.

Sulfide-type tin deposits in Russia are characterised by the complex mineral composition of ores and dump products of their processing. Tin-sulfide ores contain industrial quantities of copper, lead, zinc, tungsten, silver, rare and trace elements (indium, scandium, etc.). In addition, the ores are characterised by uneven dissemination of sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, galena, arsenopyrite, etc.) and tin minerals (cassiterite, stannine, etc.). X-ray phase and spectral analysis, scanning electronic microscopy (SEAM), laser SIM and AFM microscopy helped to identify the selective fixing of sodium dibutyl dithiocarbamate (DBDTC) on chalcopyrite and galena, as well as the tall oil fatty acids (TOFA) and IM-50 on cassiterite. For the first time, collectors and flocculants of slurry fractions of silver and tin, thermomorphic polymers TMPF were used to isolate more than 80% silver from the tin tailings of the Solnechny mine into a copper-silver rough concentrate. It has been established that preliminary ultrasonic treatment and desliming according to the 0.02 mm class removes up to 20% of sludge material, which impairs the process of gravity separation. The combined flotation-gravity scheme using new reagent compositions helped to obtain tin concentrate with a tin content of 5.42%, which meets the requirements for further metallurgical processing (at least 5%). "In my Presidential address last year `The Institute in Retrospect and Prospect', I briefly reviewed the past activities of our Institute, I commented on the dynamic growth of the mineral activity of this country and of the great contribution towards this growth made by members of this Institute. I maintained that there was still further growth to come, pointing out that our future would be very much dependent on the availability and skills of our mining and metallurgical men. This Institute had, therefore, a most important task ahead to ensure that this country would have the necessary skilled engineers to develop our mineral industry so that we would be able to compete successfully in the wide world. In my address I highlighted many of the major achievements of our members and of our Institute. In today's review, I have no wish to repeat myself and I would, therefore, ask members and visitors to regard this review as complementary to my presidential address. I must also refer you to the very full resume of our affairs written for a special brochure in March, 1944, by E. H. Johnson, a founder member, on the occasion of our 50th Anniversary. There is no need to repeat what was given there, rather I will attempt to bring that history up to date. Our Institute was founded under the name of Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa on 24th March, 1894, by a group of chemists and metallurgists The name was changed to Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa early in 1903, and in July, 1956 became The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. We were not the first technical organisation in South Africa, the S.A. Association of Engineers and Architects having been formed in 1892. In that year also the British Institution of Mining and Metallurgy started in London. This paper describes the application of a throughput-optimization strategy to a run-of-mine (ROM) mining circuit that is controlled by a multivariable controller. The objective of the optimization strategy is to maximize the ROM throughput at a specific product size. Results from long-term tests, which indicated how 'steady-state' optimization can be achieved, were used for the throughput optimization. This strategy increased the ROM throughput by 11,4 per cent. A mathematical relationship relating residue to grind can be used to calculate the economic benefits of stabilizing control. It was estimated that the throughput optimizer could result in an increase in gold production worth Rl,4 million per annum when waste rock is treated, and that stabilizing control could increase the treatment plants annual revenue by R150 000. If the extra milling capacity brought about by the optimizer is interpreted as a capital cost saving of 10 per cent on the price of a new mil, then a capital cost saving of RI million could result.

Since its introduction in 1956, the capital allowance has been increased and its scope widened. At present the allowance is 10% in respect of two categories of gold mine (post-1973 and other deep level mines) and 6% in respect of natural oil mines. The allowance is a significant incentive encouraging the development of new mines, to the benefit of both the fiscus and the South African economy as a whole. A strong case can be made for increasing the amount and the scope of the allowance. The Margo Report recommendation that the allowance should possibly be replaced with a system of direct grants is, in theory, neutral. However, practical difficulties exist with cash grants and there is concern with the implications elsewhere in the Margo Report that the capital allowance is excessive and that, as a consequence, such direct grants will represent an effective reduction in this incentive. I believe that the best course of action would be the retention (and enhancement) of the capital allowance and the expansion of its scope.

Development of new technologies and procedures for managing mineral residues and wastes may benefit from a clear understanding of existing tailing management practices. There is a considerable variability in tailing management techniques used in the Australian copper and gold operations, with associated differences and flow-on effects for the mine site water balance. A database was created, capturing a total of 41 copper and gold processing operations in Australia. The database provides information on tailing generation rates, tailing properties (solids contents and particle size distributions) and tailing storage facility (TSF) types and configurations (e.g. total TSF surface area and wetted surface area). Significant variability was found for the above-mentioned parameters. The solid tailing generation rates ranged from 0.5-37 Mt per annum in 2015. Furthermore, both the solids contents and particle size ranges of the tailing were highly site-specific, and largely dependent on the processing flowsheets. Solids contents of tailings ranged from 45-74% by weight whilst P80 sizes of the concentrator (flotation) feed varied from 75-185 μm. The estimated pumping distance was up to 15 km. The presented data can potentially be used to better tailing management strategies by estimating the potential recoverable water and recycling it, thereby thus reducing tailing footprints. The Mine Planning Department of Rio Tinto Management Services South Africa has installed an interactive graphic work station to assist with the long- term mine planning of Palabora. Previously, the planning was drafted manually after which digitised areas were fed to the computerised ore reserve system. This method was slow, tedious, prone to error and was becoming incapable of meeting new planning parameters. To assist the planning engineer an interactive graphic system was developed, and subsequently a rewrite of the ore reserve reporting system was incorporated. The work station has reasonable computing power and, when not utilised for graphics, has been found suitable for the evaluation of various non- graphical applications, a recent example of which was the in-pit crusher investigation. This project, in contrast to similar studies, was not based on a fixed system throughput but rather on a well designed system which would be operated at its own optimum capacity. In order to determine the probable throughput a simple simulator was designed to model the crushing and conveying system. This paper describes the investigation into the specifications for the work station, the selection of hardware, operating system and languages. An over- view is then given of the graphic planning system. The in-pit crushing simulation has been included as an example of how the work station has been applied to other, non graphical, applications.

The first commercial Corex Plant in the world capable of producing liquid iron from a variety of low-grade coals was commissioned in 1990 by Iscor at its Pretoria Works. The Plant has an annual production capacity of 300 kt of liquid iron. Because the compulsory use of coke is eliminated, the new method offers an economic and revolutionary alternative to liquid-iron production. Coke used in traditional blastfurnaces is manufactured from high-grade coal of which the available sources in South Africa are limited.

The reduction of fluxed and non-fluxed manganese, ores by ferromanganese silicide by W. P. CHANNON, B.Se. (Eng.), M.Sce. (Eng.) Wits. (Visitor) and J. B. SEE, B.Sce. Hons., Ph.D. (New South Wales), M.I.M., M.I.M.M. (Member) In South Africa, medium-carbonferromanganese is produced by the silicothermic reduction of slags containing MnO. Because of its importance in the production of refined ferromanganese, a study was made of the reaction between a premelted South African Mamatwan manganese ore and various ferromanganese silicide reducing alloys, with and without fluxing agents. Because the reaction is highly exothermic, temperature appeared to have little effect on the rates of manganese transfer to the metal and silicon transfer to the slag, and an apparent equilibrium was rapidly approached. Limits were determined for the favourable effects of fluxing additions, and manganese recoveries were found to decline as the ratio of CaO to MgO decreased as a result of the addition of basic flux. The recovery of manganese passed through a maximum, and subsequently decreased for variations in the ratio of alloy to ore. The results obtained, when used in conjunction with other physicochemical data related to this slag-metal system, suggest optimum slag compositions for the efficient manufacture of medium-carbon ferromanganese from Mamatwan ore.

The sequential flotation of copper, lead, and zinc in that order is practised at the Broken Hill Concentrator of the Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Limited. The minerals of economic importance are chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite, with associated silver. The targets for recovery and grade in the lead and zinc circuits were reached quite readily after start-up, but the copper circuit failed to meet the performance requirements with respect to both recovery' and grade. The original circuit for copper is described, together with the subsequent investigations and modifications that were required to produce acceptable metallurgical results. Circuits for semi-bulk and bulk flotation were tried, and the effect of the oxidation state of the pulp was investigated extensively and found to be all important. Tests were conducted on the depression of lead in the cleaning circuit by the use of sodium dichromate, and on heating with the addition of sulphurous acid. The latter technique was ultimately the more successful. The proportion of fresh to recycle water entering the circuit was shown to be important. The original reagent regime was altered and augmented. A more recent problem has been the contamination of the ore with cemented backfill. The changes that this new condition necessitated are described. Success has been measured by a continuous improvement in the economics of the copper recovery.

Mr R.D. Beck attended Felsted School in Essex (England) and the Royal School of Mines, University of London, where he ob¬tained the degree of B.Sc.(Eng.), A.R.S.M. in mineral technology in 1969. His other qualifications include Pr.Eng. (1976), C.Eng (1975), and M.I.M.M. (1975). He joined Gold Fields of South Africa in December 1969, and worked at Doornfontein Gold Mine, Greenside Colliery, West Driefontein Gold Mine, Zwartkloof Fluorspar, Gold Fields Laboratories, Gold Fields Head Office, Libanon Gold Mine, and Kloof Gold Mine before being appointed Plant Superintendent at East Driefontein Gold Mine in January 1973. In June 1976, he was transferred to Head Office as Group Metallurgist, followed, in November 1978, by his secondment to Black Mountain Mineral Development Company as Plant Superintendent, to take on-site responsibilities for staff training, plant commissioning, and start up. On his return to Head Office in July 1980 as Assistant Consulting Metallurgist, he was responsible for Black Mountain and new metallurgical projects. Then, in January 1984, he was appointed General Manager of the Zinc Corporation of South Africa Limited. He became a member of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1973.

Contribution by W.D. Ortlepp? The authors are to be commended for publishing their interesting view of an aspect of deep-level mining technology that is becoming increasingly topical and vitally important. This is the second paper in the journal within four months to deal with the crucial needs of highly stressed tunnel construction, the other being the paper on the design and testing of rockburst support in the February 1994 issue. Both papers re-examine important innovative ideas that are more than a quarter of a century old, but that have not yet been implemented by the industry. It is to be hoped that they will now, taken together, serve as a new starting point for a definitive examination of what constitutes proper tunnel-support design. There can be no question that the need to develop a design approach that will solve the problems of tunnelling at depths of 4000 m or more has now become crucial. Contribution by A.M.J. Vervoort* Although the overall paper is very interesting and the future research (comparison between numerical simulations and underground measurements) will be very challenging, I would like to make some remarks regarding the set-up of the numerical model and the interpretation of the elastic results.

The research presented in this paper investigated the practical aspects of the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from a dilute cyanide leach solution containing base metals, in a manner similar to that used for gold extraction in a typical CIP process, and focuses on both the adsorption and elution stages. The carrier-phase extraction of precious metals using activated carbon offers significant advantages over other processes in terms of simplicity, the high pre-concentration factor, rapid phase separation, and relatively low capital and operating costs. As a sorbent, activated carbon is still by far the most important material because of its large surface area, high adsorption capacity, porous structure, negligible environmental toxicity, low cost, and high purity standards. Adsorption tests were conducted on a pregnant alkaline leach solution (0.15 ppm Pt, 0.38 ppm Pd, 0.1 ppm Au) resulting from cyanide extraction performed in column leach tests. The initial adsorption rates of Pt, Pd, and Au were very fast and recoveries of these three metals were approximately 90 per cent after 2 hours, and 100 per cent for Pt, 97.4 per cent for Pd, and 99.9 per cent for Au after 72 hours. The parameters that influence the extraction of PGMs and Au were examined to assess their relative importance during the adsorption process in order to provide the basis for process optimization. The concentration of thiocyanate was not identified as significant factor for PGMs adsorption, while Ni concentration was the most significant extraction process parameter. Base metal cyanide complexes adsorb and compete with the PGM complexes for sites on activated carbon, and while copper adsorption can be minimized by adjusting the residence time, Ni adsorbs at approximately the same rate as the PGMs, influencing the loading capacity and adsorption kinetics of the PGMs. The feasibility of eluting platinum and palladium cyanide complexes from activated carbon using an analogue of the AARL process was investigated. Platinum and palladium elute from activated carbon almost to completion in 4 to 5 bed volumes at 80°C, while the elution of gold at this temperature is slow, with a significant amount of gold still to be eluted after 16 bed volumes. The equilibrium loading of gold is exothermic in nature (Fleming and Nicol, 1984) which will result in an increase in gold elution kinetics with an increase in temperature at similar pre-treatment conditions. A similar result was found for the elution of Pt and Pd. Cyanide pre-treatment was found to have a significant influence on PGM elution. Higher cyanide concentration in the pre-treatment step results in more efficient elution up to a point, and results suggest the possibility of an optimum cyanide concentration, beyond which elution efficiency starts decreasing due to increased ionic strength.

This paper discusses the mine planning process for Letseng diamond mine in the Kingdom of Lesotho, in conjunction with the various software packages used during the process. The major pillars of the long-term mine planning process at Letseng are pit optimization followed by pit design and scheduling. Letseng uses Gemcom Whittle and GEMS for pit optimization and design and Runge XPAC for scheduling. The output of the mine planning process results in the generation of published mineral reserves and provides input into the Letseng overall business plan. A risk evaluation model has been developed that enables the quantification of expected injuries and economic losses resulting from rockfalls associated with a support system in a given geotechnical environment, which is described in Part I (Joughin et al., 2011b). Part II presents the validation of the risk evaluation model. Underground mapping of joints and rockfalls was carried out to provide data for field calibration of the model. This survey was limited to small rockfalls, due to the relatively short period of mapping. Therefore the model was also correlated with rockfall and rockfall injury data collected by mine personnel. The analyses showed that the model provides a reasonable estimate of the expected frequency and size of rockfalls and the frequency of rockfall injuries, but further work is required to enhance the model. Three case studies are presented, which show the benefits of improved support systems from both economic and safety perspectives. This work has demonstrated that the risk evaluation model and the software developed are immediately useful, but further work is required to develop and improve the tools.

"Artisanal mining is basic mining characterized by manually intensive work methods utilizing primitive or simple equipment and conducted by individuals or small groups exploiting deposits. Artisanal mining in Rwanda and Burundi is further complicated in that the techniques applied are often inadequate, resulting in low productivity and poor recoveries, and workers are paid low wages with owners reluctant to reinvest in the mining operations. A consequence of this vicious circle is often poor working conditions, with miners operating under unsafe and/or unhealthy working conditions. An additional problem is that mining is conducted in a manner that is detrimental to the environment.Artisanal mining is commonly more dangerous than large-scale modern mining operations. Artisanal operations are generally subsistence activities with the miners focusing more on immediate concerns than the long-term consequences of their activities. When miners have no other source of income, they will usually find ways to evade controls and carry on working. Machinery tends to be expensive and often far beyond the reach of most artisanal miners, and therefore there is a general tendency for workers to focus on labour intensive and riskier mining methods.This paper proposes the introduction of small-scale mechanization with labour-intensive manual mining utilizing a bench mining approach in artisanal mines operating in Central Africa. From the 1950s to the 1980s bench mining was successfully conducted in Burundi utilizing manual labour. In order to achieve a balance between job creation and project economics, the combination of manual and mechanized mining is proposed. Manual mining offers the benefit of local job creation while ensuring good mining techniques, such as minimizing mining loses and dilution. Through the introduction of mechanized loading and hauling activities, areas of high stripping ratios can be viably mined, thus increasing the amount of resources that can be exploited. The use of a loader and tractor-trailer arrangement is proposed, thereby improving throughput, productivity, and worker safety and, reducing the impact on the environment."

The gas turbine industry is faced with a challenge to improve the performance of engines, while simultaneously adhering to stringent environmental legislation. One way of addressing the problem is by further increasing the recipient working temperatures. Unfortunately, the use of nickel based superalloys (NBSAs) in the gas turbine industry has reached its limitations. Although coatings can be used for small increases, and air cooling is also incorporated by design, attention is towards developing stronger metallurgical materials having higher melting points, with acceptable creep and corrosion resistance. A series of ternary and quaternary Platinum-based superalloys were developed. Platinum was selected because of its higher melting points compared to nickel, similar fcc structure and better corrosion properties. Mechanical characterisation studies of Platinum-based superalloys alloys, which included oxidation, creep and hardness, demonstrated reasonable results, outperforming an oxide dispersed strengthening (ODS) Fe-based superalloy (PM2000) and a nickel based superalloy (MAR-M200). During any materials development where high temperatures are concerned, high strength is the primary property of interest. However, during the development of gas turbines, component life and reliability, which are influenced by temperature, need to be taken into consideration, and therefore creep as well as corrosion (both temperature dependant properties), are important. These properties become significant with increasing temperatures. With increasing demand for higher temperatures, it is becoming increasingly important to include hot corrosion properties of the alloy during the material selection process. A short description on hot corrosion and its degradation mechanisms are given in this paper. Coatings are currently dominating as the best practical solution to address temperature increases. This paper looks at benefits and shortcomings of coatings over Pt-based superalloys as candidates for applications under extreme conditions. A 10-year program to integrate crushing and screening models into daily flowsheet design practice has proven successful. A Circuit Analysis Program (CAP) is used worldwide to design and evaluate new and existing crushing flowsheets. To gain user acceptance of CAP and maximize effectiveness, model development, simulation flexibility, ease of use, and developing international access are key issues. These issues have been resolved effectively resulting in flowsheet simulations to assist in justifying increased capital investment. CAP is presently utilized in Canada, United States, and South Africa with intentions to expand to Europe and Asia.

Atomaer (Pty) Ltd is a technology-driven company with interests in Western Australian nickel. Atomaer (RSA) Pty Ltd is a process technology company operating in Southern Africa. It is a subsidiary of Atomaer Holdings Pty Limited (Atomaer), which has operating companies in Australia, Africa, South America, and Europe. In addition, Atomaer has substantial shareholdings in Braemore Resources Plc, a nickel company with interests in sulphide nickel projects in Western Australia and Southern Africa listed on the Alternative Investment Market of London Stock Exchange (AIM); Mintails Limited, a gold company with interests in gold operations in South Africa listed on the Australia Stock Exchange; and Brinkley Mining Plc, a uranium company with interests in Southern Africa listed on the AIM. Independence Platinum Limited (IPt) has been formed by Atomaer to undertake the commercial development and exploitation of Mintek's ConRoast technology with the strategic objective of providing independent smelting and refining facilities with lower capital and operating costs for the treatment and processing of platinum concentrates, including those with high chrome and/or nickel and/or low platinum group metal values, for the development of platinum projects by junior resource companies in South Africa. The platinum mines of South Africa have traditionally exploited the Merensky Reef of the Bushveld Complex for platinum production. However, the mining of this reef is reaching depths that require significant vertical shaft systems and costly refrigeration for access to the ore bodies at deeper levels. In the past decade, all of the platinum producers have begun to mine the UG2 reef because of its cheaper mining costs. UG2 ore usually has lower platinum group metal contents and higher chrome values. The new junior resource companies have gained access primarily to UG2 reefs. Consequently, platinum mining is becoming more UG2-based and the resulting concentrates contain high levels of chromitite. UG2 concentrates are difficult to smelt in the current six-in-line submerged arc furnaces, and this leads to increased capital and operating costs for those smelting operations. The platinum mines of South Africa produce the majority of the world's platinum metal used in automotive catalysts and jewellery. As the platinum market is forecast to grow at a healthy rate into the future, the SA producers Anglo Platinum, Impala, Lonmin, and Northam are planning to expand mining operations in the next decade. Furthermore, a number of smaller new producers who are accessing other mineral resources are entering the buoyant market and will produce platinum concentrates for purchase or toll treatment. Hence, a shortage in both smelting and refining capacities is anticipated. Further smelting and refining facilities independent of the major platinum producers will be required in South Africa by 2010. Mintek's ConRoast technology is best suited to fill the need to treat a high proportion of UG2 concentrates in a cost-effective and technically efficient manner. Atomaer base metals technology has been developed for rapid leaching of nickel and other base metals from alloy. Significant reductions in capital and operating costs are expected from the combination of the two advances in process technology compared with that installed at the existing smelters and refineries that were established over 20 years ago. Independence Platinum will be listed on AIM and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in 2007, and developed as an independent, vertically-integrated platinum company using its independent smelting and base metals refining facilities as a strategic platform to promote the development and mining of platinum projects by junior resource companies in South Africa through technical co-operation, strategic alliances, joint ventures, off-take, toll-refining, and marketing agreements.
