Spiral separators have been widely accepted as one of the most flexible gravity separation devices for several decades. The International Journal of Mineral Processing, 84, pp. 118 – 132 mentioned that spirals are for treating material too coarse for flotation and too fine for dense-media separation. Powder Technology V 102, pp 244 – 252, 1999 stated that there exists a genuine need for extending the performance envelope of spirals – whether to treat finer or coarser material than the traditional size ranges. In recent times there has been an upsurge in interest, particularly in the development of newer fine gravity separators. Spiral separators for the recovery of ultra-fine particles have a unique profile, pitch and features to ensure efficient performance. The flow on the spiral trough must be controlled to minimise turbulence that will entrain fine particles in the outer section of the trough. The experimental test work showed a movement of mass from the outer region towards the centre column of the spiral, i.e., from the fine tailings band towards the concentrate. As recovery on the spiral trough is a function of mass yield and grade, the ultra-fine 7 spiral had a better recovery than the HX5. This makes the UF7 an ideal rougher spiral. Corrosion of copper in aerated acidic chloride pickling (0.5 M HCl) solutions and its inhibition by 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol (ATT) have been investigated using electrochemical techniques and weight-loss measurements, along with Raman spectroscopy. Electrochemical measurements for copper after varied immersion periods of 0, 24 and 48h showed that the presence of ATT and the increase of its concentration significantly decrease cathodic, anodic, corrosion (jCorr) currents and corrosion rates (KCorr), as well as the dissolution currents at 300 mV vs. Ag/AgCl, while increase polarization resistance (Rp), degree of surface coverage (?) and inhibition efficiency (IE%) to a great extent. Weight-loss measurements after different immersion periods of 6 ~ 48h revealed that the dissolution of copper decreased to a minimum and the corresponding IE% increased with ATT concentration increases. The detection of ATT molecules on the copper surface by Raman spectroscopy indicated that inhibition of copper corrosion is achieved by strong adsorption of ATT molecules onto the copper surface. The quest for efficiency in comminution is an ongoing concern as comminution usually constitutes a major cost component in the metal production industry. Such improvements can be made by circuit optimization or development of more efficient equipment. A novel crusher, known as the rotary offset crusher (ROC), promises to deliver in this space. The ROC was invented in 2002 by Michael Hunt, Henry Simonsen, and Ian Sinclair, but failed to garner enough support to progress to production. The original design concept was recently rekindled, and a laboratory version of the crusher has been built and commissioned at the University of the Witwatersrand. The crusher is simple in design, with two cylindrical discs that are parallel to each other, and, as the name implies, there is an offset between the vertical axes of the discs. The top disc has a conical section on its lower face, and this creates a crushing zone between the opposite faces of the two spinning discs. Centrifugal motion transports particles through the crushing zone. Batch experiments have been conducted with quartz at various crusher settings (discs offset, rotational speed, and vertical exit gap) for various feed size distributions. The indications so far suggest that the disc speed is a key factor affecting the performance. Size reduction ratios as high as 11 were recorded from experiments with quartz at a speed of 830 r/min.

In open pit mining, ore and waste are hauled outside of the excavation area by trucks that move along a system of ramps. The design of these ramps must be carefully addressed because they have to comply with geomechanical constraints to ensure the stability of the pit walls, provide access to the different levels and phases, but also maximise the value of the extracted ore and reduce the extraction of waste. Because an optimisation approach able to deal with the design of the full ramp system seems to be out of reach at the moment, this paper addresses the problem of designing one ramp providing access to a single pushback, which has been determined beforehand. The optimisation objective is therefore to find a ramp that gives access to one given potential volume, while minimising its impact on the economic value of the volume. Two versions of the problem are formalised. One version allows the extraction of ore and waste only if this extraction is necessary for the ramp system. This version somehow minimises the intrinsic value of the ramp system. In the second version, it is possible to extract more than is needed by the ramp system. For instance, this takes into account the possibility of attaining ore on the wall opposite to the ramp as soon as the ramp reaches its level. In the setting mentioned above, the contribution of this work is three-fold. First, the computational complexity of the two different versions of the problem is presented and discussed; in particular, they are shown to be NP-hard. Second, compact integer programs modelling these two versions are proposed. Third, an efficient GRASP algorithm able to cope with the large instances of the problem is proposed. To assess the proposed approaches, the models and algorithms are applied to real instances with an off-the-shelf solver, illustrating and discussing their potential and relevance for the two versions of the problem. They are also compared with other approaches from the literature in terms of value and resulting designs.

In a pulp environment, the surface properties of magnesite and dolomite tend to be similar, due to the re-adsorption of dissolved calcium species, which makes the flotation separation difficult. In this paper, the chelating reagent EDTA is introduced to eliminate the adverse influence of the calcium species and to restore the selectivity of magnesite-dolomite separation using sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) as a depressant. Flotation experiments confirm that the recovery of magnesite improves significantly in the presence of EDTA. Zeta potential experiments confirm that the negatively charged EDTA4+ and HEDTA3+ species can form soluble and stable chelates with positively charged Ca2+ and Ca(OH)+ species preventing their adsorption on the magnesite surface. Adsorption measurements prove the addition of EDTA can decrease the adsorption of depressant SHMP on the magnesite surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements further confirm the transformation from the surface of magnesite to dolomite in the presence of calcium ions, and the possible adsorption mechanism of EDTA and SHMP on the magnesite and dolomite surface. A common method for the recovery of copper is by heap leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. During solvent extraction, the solution is continuously recycled, and it is necessary to remove impurities that build up in the raffinate. For the process investigated in this study, the main impurities include Fe, Co, As, and Zn. Recovery of these impurities can provide economic benefits while adhering to legal and environmental constraints. Such impurities are often removed by precipitation utilizing a neutralizing agent, such as limestone or lime, but it is also possible to remove the impurities by sulfide precipitation. Sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) is used to selectively precipitate copper, arsenic, and zinc from a solvent-extraction raffinate stream. The resulting sulfide precipitate is bagged and sent to a roaster for further treatment. The design of the sulfide precipitation was investigated to optimize the processing conditions (including temperature, pressure, and residence time), the materials of construction, and the toxicity and explosive nature of the hydrogen sulfide gas produced

This paper describes research done to remove apatite (phosphorus) from hematite ultrafine (70% finer than 25 micron) concentrate, recovered by electromagnetic separators at the FST Tailing Recovery Plant located in Chadormalu Iron Ore Complex through reverse froth flotation. As a result, iron and phosphorus content in magnetic concentrate (flotation feed) were 53.52% and 0.58%, respectively. Therefore, to increase the Fe content and decrease the P content of the sample, reverse flotation tests were applied. Chemical reagents used in this research consisted of sodium silicate as a depressant, sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate as pH regulators, Alke & Dirol as fatty acid collectors and MIBC as frother. Process parameters including dosages of collectors, depressant and frother, preparation times of depressant and collectors, steps and time of frothing and pH range were selected. After doing flotation tests, in optimum condition, dosages of collectors were 1200 g/t, depressant 1200 g/t, pH in the range of 9.5 to 10, preparation time of collectors in the first step was eight minutes and at the other steps, four minutes; the number of frothing steps 4 and frothing time in each stage was three minutes. In this case, it was observed that the amount of phosphorus in the final concentrate was reduced to 0.05%, the Fe content increased from 53.52% to 61.66% and the Fe recovery achieved was 82.21%. The traditional vertical transportation systems deliver both gangue and useful mineral. The extraction of the desired minerals requires the construction of mineral processing and waste management plants, driving production costs, and often creating a negative environmental impact. The proposed technology is an integration of mineral processing within the transportation system. The mined rock is crushed and then loaded into a vertical lifting system filled with heavy media, with an intermediate density between the mineral and the waste rock. Driven by gravity separation, the desired mineral floats to the earth's surface, while the waste sinks. Delivered minerals and sunk waste is extracted from the heavy media and is then regenerated to a dry state. The useful mineral should be suitable for further use, and the waste used for backfilling. Remained residues of the heavy media may be recycled and reused in the vertical transportation system. Trials of the proposed process in a pilot format have confirmed economic and environmental advantages over traditional methods of transportation and mineral processing technologies. Almost no work has been published on the strength of pillars in mines exploiting the LG6/LG6A chromitite bands in the Western Bushveld Complex. The strength of these pillars is unknown, and the hard rock industry still uses the Hedley and Grant formula. Numerical modelling, using inelastic constitutive models, may be of some value in estimating the pillar strength, but this approach is difficult and prone to errors as many assumptions are made. This paper explores the alternative approach of the back-analysis of actual LG6/LG6A mining layouts, using displacement discontinuity codes to simulate the average pillar stresses on a mine-wide scale. From this, and underground observations, a ‘minimum’ pillar strength (K-value in the pillar strength formula) can be estimated. The codes TEXAN and Map3D are both used in the paper to simulate the actual pillar shapes and sizes in an LG6/LG6A mine. The results are encouraging as the two codes produced similar APS values for a complex pillar geometry. An estimated K-value of 77 MPa was determined for the LG6/LG6A pillars in this particular area. This is more or less similar to earlier work done for the UG2 chromitite seam, but higher than the K-value of 39 MPa for a linear formula obtained by other workers for LG6/LG6A pillars. Caution should therefore be exercised before using this higher value for all areas. The effect of element sizes and explicitly simulating the effect of the surface for shallow pillars is illustrated in the manuscript using both codes. The need for actual pillar observations and an iterative design process, which cycles between modelling and observations, is also emphasized.

The sulphide flotation circuit at First Quantum Minerals’ Kansanshi mine in Zambia produced over 100,000 t of copper in 2019. For this circuit, mineralogical analysis has shown that the majority of the copper lost is hosted in fine liberated chalcopyrite, which is a paramagnetic mineral. The objective of this work was therefore to improve fine chalcopyrite recovery in the sulphide flotation circuit at Kansanshi, using a magnetic conditioning technology to agglomerate fine paramagnetic minerals. This theoretically increases the probability of attachment during collision and therefore improves recovery. A four-month paired ‘t’ test plant trial was carried out and comprised of consecutive ON-OFF periods with and without magnetic conditioning in the rougher flotation bank of the sulphide circuit. The experimental design involved assessment of recovery by size based on daily and weekly composite samples of feed and tails, sized using both wet-screening and cyclosizer. Both the daily plant data and the sized samples showed an increase in Cu recovery with magnetic conditioning ON. A 0.56% copper recovery improvement was measured with magnetic conditioning at a 99.4% confidence level. Keywords: Flotation, fine mineral, chalcopyrite, magnetic aggregation

Inferring individual component flotation rates from recovery-time data of ore complexes is important in optimising and designing minerals processing plants. However, existing two-component first-order flotation models are computationally intensive to solve using conventional non-linear least squares regression. In this paper, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is used to approximate the inverse function which predicts the two-component first-order model parameters using recovery-time data. This paper compares the accuracy and computation speed of the proposed CNN against traditional non-linear least squares regression on 1 million generated data based on a known two-component firstorder kinetic model. It is shown that using a CNN is possible to approximate the inverse function for the non-invertible two-component model with recovery-time as an input matrix for convolution operations. The CNN method is 450 times faster to compute than the Trust-Region (TR) non-linear least squares regression algorithm. However, the CNN model is less accurate compared to the TR algorithm overall. "SynopsisSilicon carbide nanopowders were produced using a microwave-induced plasma process operating at 15 kPa absolute and at atmospheric pressure. Methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) served as precursor, due to its advantageous stoichiometric silicon-to-carbon ratio of unity, allowing it to act as both carbon and silicon source. Argon served as carrier gas, and an additional hydrogen feed helped ensure a fully reducing reaction environment. The parameters under investigation were the H2:MTS molar ratio and the total enthalpy. The particle size distribution ranged from 20 nm upwards, as determined by SEM and TEM micrographs. It was found that an increase in enthalpy and a higher H2:MTS ratio resulted in smaller SiC particle sizes. The adhesion of particles was a common occurrence during the process, resulting in larger agglomerate sizes. SiC layers were deposited at 15 kPa with thicknesses ranging from 5.8 to 15 µm.IntroductionIt is well known that methyltrichlorosilane (CH3SiCl3 or MTS) decomposes to form silicon carbide (SiC) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) as shown in Equation [1]. The Brucutu iron ore mine (Minas Gerais, Brazil), is Vale`s largest iron producing operation achieving around 21 million tons by flotation of iron ore pellet feed per annum. The run of mine is mainly composed of hematite (70%) and quartz (30%). After preparation (comminution and sizing), the slurry is submitted to reverse cationic flotation of quartz under basic conditions (pH=10.5). Corn starch (500g/t) is used to depress Fe-bearing minerals and alkyl (C10) ether amine is the collector for quartz. The flotation circuit is arranged in a “coarse” section utilizing dated 28m3 square Wemco cells, and a “fine” section utilizing modern 160m3 tank cells. The “coarse” flotation circuit treats material from the deslime cyclone underflow while the “fine” circuit treats material from the deslime cyclone overflow and the pulp product from the “coarse” circuit scavenger 2 bank. Evaluation of process performance is of high importance as even small gains can lead to large improvements for this high throughput plant. Cell-by-cell samples of the froth products, selected feed and pulp-products were analyzed for flow-rate, overall chemical composition, and particle size distribution. Bank-by-bank samples of the feed, froth and pulp products were analyzed on an assay-by-size basis. In addition, the flotation cells were hydrodynamically characterized and gas dispersion parameters assessed. The detailed experimental program resulted in a thorough characterization of the process and enough information to produce a calibrated floatability component model. Longer mainline residence time results in significant Fe2O3 losses while yielding little benefit in terms of SiO2 grade. Scavenger 2 has twice the residence time of scavenger 1 while having to treat only 10% of the SiO2; resulting in high Fe2O3 recoveries to the froth and poor separation. In addition, it is shown that the Fe2O3 exhibits true flotation behavior resulting in increased Fe2O3 losses. The detailed data collection campaign coupled with in depth data analysis and modelling gives unprecedented information and highlights avenues for optimization that was previously unknown.
