Steel is produced in a basic oxygen furnace from hot metal obtained from a blast furnace. A sintered iron ore with good hightemperature properties (strength and permeability) should be used as feed to the blast furnace. The quality of this sintered ore depends on the reactivity of the iron ore used as feed to the sinter plant during the lime assimilation step in the sintering process. The penetration test is the standard method for evaluating the reactivity of iron ore with lime. It is, however, difficult to determine the exact depth of penetration from the standard test. A new test method is proposed that allows automatic evaluation of iron ores in terms of lime assimilation with increasing temperature. A comparison of the coefficients of variation for the new and standard methods for each ore type demonstrates that the results of the new test are more reproducible and more precise than those of the standard method. The test is also less time-consuming and easier to implement.

Recovery of fine pentlandite is proving to be a challenging task in the Kevitsa sequential flotation operations, with over 60% of the nickel losses reporting into the -25μm size fraction. Since commissioning, the Kevitsa process has undergone major changes to address throughput and flotation performance. Major changes were implemented in the configuration of the milling and flotation circuits as well as in the operating conditions and reagent regime. Some of these changes improved nickel flotation while others deteriorated flotation performance. Most of the changes have had a direct impact on nickel flotation. This paper reviews the systematic analysis, laboratory testing and salient changes done to the process with special focus on the impact on the fine pentlandite flotation. "The advantages of using Nb and Ti-Nb coatings for improving the hardness and corrosion resistance of Ti6Al4V were investigated. It has been reported that Ti6Al4V used in orthopaedic implants tends to release toxic Al and V ions into the surrounding tissue. Thin layers of Nb and Ti-Nb were deposited on Ti6Al4V substrates using a laser metal deposition technique. The deposited material was analysed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The corrosion behaviour of the deposited layers was investigated using a Metrohm Autolab PG Stat101 compact potentiostat at 25°C in simulated body fluid. A Vickers hardness system was used to study the mechanical properties. Both Nb and Ti-Nb coatings exhibited good metallurgical bonding with the substrate. The microstructure and the XRD analyses for the Nb system showed that the ??-Nb phase was most dominant, while the Ti-Nb system comprised a mixture of the ?? and ?? phases. The average hardness of the Ti6Al4V substrate was 350 HV0.3, with a slight increase for the Nb coating (363 HV0.3) and a much higher hardness from the Ti-Nb coating at 423 HV0.3. The corrosion results show that the deposited Nb was more corrosion-resistant in the solution than either the Ti6Al4V substrate or the Ti-Nb coating. IntroductionMetals such as CoCrMo, 316L stainless steel, and NiTi alloy are used for manufacturing biomedical implants because of their distinct properties, including low Young’s modulus and resistance to corrosion (Ryan, Pandit, and Apatsidis, 2006). These implants are required to remain in the body of the patient for many years. Due to a favourable combination of mechanical and corrosion properties, titanium (Ti) and its alloys have emerged as the material of choice for biomedical implants. Nevertheless, their use is not entirely without challenges. For example, in total hip replacement, surface degradation and release of metal debris from metal erosion caused by friction limit the service life of the implant (Oldani and Dominguez, 2012; Manivasagam, Dhinasekaran, and Rajamanickam, 2010). Ti6Al4V is generally regarded as the material of choice, but it has been found that over extended periods of time, the combination of surface corrosion and erosion releases toxic aluminium (Al) and vanadium (V) ions into the body (Khan, Williams, and Williams, 1996). This has led to the investigation of titanium alloys containing niobium (Nb), zirconium (Zr), tantalum (Ta), and molybdenum (Mo) as substitutes for the aluminium- and vanadium-containing Ti6Al4V (Okazaki et al., 1997)."

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are mostly used prior to pelletising processes to increase the specific surface area (SSA) of iron ore concentrate. For expressing SSA, the Blaine index is utilised as one of the most important dimensional properties of iron ore pellet feed. ISO 21283 is a standard test method that explains the manual of Blaine air-permeability apparatus for determination of this parameter. In this standard, the disaggregation method is based on passing the minus of 1 mm samples from the 0.150 mm sieve. The disaggregation process has an effective role on the results of Blaine airpermeability test especially for regrinding HPGR products. In this research, firstly the Blaine index of samples was measured without disaggregation. Following this, disaggregation was done by passing the minus of 1 mm samples through three sieves with different dimensions, 0.150, 0.090 and 0.045 mm, separately, and the Blaine index was calculated for each one. Finally, lab-mill with rubber balls, called Jar mill, was investigated as another option. Screen analysis and image analysis with SEM were performed to evaluate the effects of the sample's disaggregation on the size distribution and agglomeration of samples. The results showed that the disaggregation method with sieve size 0.150 mm, according to ISO 21283, was not applicable for HPGR products because the particles were still stuck together. In addition, the disaggregation method with the sieve size 0.045 mm or with Jar mill offered reasonable results. "Mining companies are under constant pressure to reduce their cost structures to sustain profitability. In mines using an open stoping mining method, dilution often has a significant effect on profitability. At Target mine in South Africa, dilution in some open stopes was found to exceed 10%, falls of ground being a major contributor to the problem. This dilution can reduce the recovered grade from 5.5 to 4.5 g/t, resulting in a potential loss of about R21 million per month based on a gold price of R240 000 per kilogram. In addition to the cost of dilution, the cost of damage to, or loss of, trackless equipment as a direct result of falls of ground in open stopes is significant. Other associated costs include transport, hoisting, secondary blasting, milling, and plant treatment of waste material. Stable open stopes are essential in order to reduce falls of ground. Back-analyses of stope instability at Target mine have indicated that conventional rock mass failure criteria are unsuitable for stope design. An alternative strain-based criterion has been developed, and has proved to be very successful, allowing the stability of open stopes to be calculated reliably. Since its implementation in 2010, dilution and equipment damage have decreased markedly, creating value for the mine. IntroductionMines that make use of an open stoping mining method aim to extract only the ore, leaving the waste behind. Many orebodies have well-defined boundaries between the ore and the waste rock. In such orebodies, the introduction of waste into the ore due to overbreak dilutes the grade. In massive disseminated orebodies, dilution is less problematic. Overblasting, falls of ground, or other causes may result in dilution. A study undertaken in Canada (Pakalnis et al., 1995) found that approximately 51% of all underground metal mines utilized open stoping mining methods and, from surveys conducted at these mines, open stoping operations experienced dilutions of up to 20%, and occasionally more. Dilution of this magnitude has a significant economic impact on any mining venture. Research carried out in Australia by Capes (2009) came to the same conclusion."

Investigations were conducted to determine the condition and stability of the existing decline at amine in the Kalahari Manganese Field, Northern Cape Province, South Africa. During the inspection of the decline, voids were identified behind the concrete lining on the hangingwall and sidewalls over a total linear distance of 230 m. The voids did not provide confinement and, as a result, self-mining was occurring behind the lining. Water was flowing into the decline, over a total linear distance of 100 m, at areas where the decline intersected incompetent rock units, causing softening of the concrete lining and deterioration of the surrounding rock mass. Further damage to the concrete lining was caused by expansion and contraction of the wet red clay unit. Remedial work comprised void filling and water sealing to prevent further deterioration of the decline and ensure that it remained operable for the remainder of the life of mine. Void filling was accomplished by drilling rows of holes along the decline to access the voids and filling the voids with foam. This was followed by the sealing with polymer fluids. Telescopic pipes were also installed to allow water to drain off. A visual inspection was conducted and check-holes were drilled to assess the quality of the remedial work. The void filling material had penetrated cracks in the concrete lining, and areas where voids were intersected by check-holes were re-filled. Additional holes were drilled to re-seal areas that were still wet. The remedial work was completed successfully, as all voids were filled and stability achieved without compromising the concrete lining. The ingress of groundwater was also reduced to some residual dampness.

Fiber-Optic Sensing and UAV-Platform Techniques for Innovative Mineral Exploration (FUTURE) is a joint European Union and South African consortium project funded under ERA-NET Cofund ERA-MIN3. The project aims to develop cost-effective and novel seismic methods to image geological structures ahead of the mine face, ultimately leading to improved decision-making and safer mining practices. In this study we present results from numerical simulations conducted at South Deep Gold Mine for active in-mine seismic surveys. The study uses a finite differencing code known as WAVE3D, which models models the propagation of a seismic wave generated by stress pertubations that are applied to a defined grid. The numerical simulation model included two major ore bodies (Black Reef and Ventersdorp Contact Reef) and mine tunnels. The model was constrained using laboratory physical property measurements from underground borehole samples such as seismic velocities (e.g., compressional and shear waves) and bulk densities. Two case studies were created, one modelled the active shots and receivers on surface, and the other modelled the shots at depth (in a mine tunnel at ~4000 m depth) with receivers on surface. In both cases, the objective was to investigate the wavefield propagation through the rockmass between the mine tunnel and surface. The simulated wavefield produced by the source located along the mine tunnel was successfully recorded on surface. The surface-recorded wavefield exhibits clear one-way P-wave arrival times at approximately 450 ms to 500 ms, which can be used to calculate the surface-tunnel P-wave refraction tomogram. The results from the study were used to constrain the design, and for the acquisition and processing of the real surface and in-mine seismic surveys acquired under the FUTURE project.

Definition of mineral resources and reserves forms the basis for effective mine planning and reliable public reporting of mineral assets. Historically the mineral resource and reserves declaration process has been the domain of the geology and surveying disciplines, with the declaration of the reserves by the surveyor being based on the application of modifying factors to the declared resources available for mining. As part of an ongoing process to improve efficiency, reliability, and reproducibility of results, this approach has been revised and enhanced through the introduction of a revised process and reconciliation tools. The revised approach to reserve definition is based on the definition of scheduled resources, at an appropriate confidence estimate in the context of an approved business plan, over the anticipated life of the mineral asset being applied to define reserves. This planning and scheduling is developed, during the annual business planning process, by the mine planning department using tools such as CADSMine?. The scheduled area together with the application of revised modifying factors is tabulated in the BME (basic mine equation) and reflects the mine production plan over time. Simplification of the modifying factors to dilution and losses underpins the simple yet robust approach to improved definition of reserves in this process and in the basic resource to reserve equation (BR2RE). Dilution intrinsically affects grade but not metal content, whereas the losses reflect both the efficiency of mining and planning and are reflected in metal losses, area losses, or both. Reconciliation of the derived ?resource converted to reserve? area, (which is based on the business plan from CADSMine?), versus the ?resource available for mining?, (which is derived from Datamine?), underpins the robustness and auditability of the reserves declaration. This R&R accounting and reconciliation approach is transparent and facilitates interrogation of the logic and rationale of long-term business planning and project strategy. These numbers are processed and reported in the logic of the basic resource equation (BRE), which also addresses aspects such as white areas (future and historic), tail management, and partial extraction (non-scheduled pillars, etc.) in compliance with SAMREC definitions. Areas that do not have the necessary confidence and data support to be declared as resources find their space as pre-resource (outside the domain of public reporting), outlining existing potential for future extraction and reporting. Use of the BRE leads ultimately to a complete, refined accounting and reconciliation-oriented approach for all production entities. The revised resource and reserve process includes the discipline of mine planning as intrinsic to the definition and declaration of resources and reserves. Subsequent to the change in process, the resources and reserves have truly become the domain of the mineral resource management discipline. This paper defines the logic of the basic resource equations and outlines their application in the definition and reconciliation of mineral resources and reserves at Anglo American Platinum Limited.

"South African mining operations depend on the skilled professionals produced through the tertiary education sector. In geoscience courses at the University of the Witwatersrand, which lead into the mining sector, there has been a significant increase in student intake over the past 15 years. This increase has been characterized by a radical shift in demography: in classes where white male students once formed the majority, black female students are now in the majority. This demographic shift appears closely linked to policies addressing issues of social justice and transformation in post-apartheid South Africa. We document this change and consider the role played by employment equity legislation (as in the Mining Charter) and corporate social investment strategies in the mining industry, notably through bursaries offered to black female students. We also look at the changing needs of the industry, where the critical need for managerial skills, not just technical knowledge, is highlighted through data from surveys of past students and industry managers. Our findings indicate the need for a curriculum adjustment to meet these changing requirements, as well as more rigorous selection criteria for bursars than simply gender, race, and appropriate matric results. IntroductionThe South African economy has historically been linked to mining and the exploitation of mineral resources. South African mining operations are dependent on the professional labour that is produced through the tertiary education sector, with critical thinking, teamwork, and the art of negotiation having been identified as the crucial skills required for this industry (Sideropoulos, 2014). Over the past three decades the South African system of education has gone through a period of dysfunction that it is struggling to rectify (Maphai, 2014). This has impacted on the levels of academic preparedness of students applying for places in higher education. Concurrently, government and university policies have widened access to higher education in response to the need to address issues of social injustice and transformation related to South Africa’s history of apartheid. As a result, the number of students admitted to universities has increased dramatically. In the School of Geosciences at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), the increase in student numbers has been accompanied by a significant change in demographics: classrooms which in the past were dominated by white males have given way to classrooms in which black females are often in the majority. This demographic shift is related to legislation such as the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and the Broadbased Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter, developed to reshape the socio-economic and equity frameworks of the country (Botha and Cronje, 2015). Requirements aimed at transformation in terms of management, skills development, and employment equity, together with corporate social investment (CSI) requirements, have resulted in bursaries being made available to attract students from designated groups, which in turn has increased the number of black students, and notably black female students, taking courses in geosciences. However, due to the economic downturn, instability in the mining industry has recently resulted in the downsizing of some mines, with international investors pulling out of South Africa. This instability resulted in devastating strikes across all sectors of the mining industry (Stewart, 2013) and in Marikana, an important platinum mining area, the strike culminated in a deadly shoot-out between miners and police. The resulting tensions spilled over into the gold mining sector, resulting in further strike action, shaft closures, and retrenchments. These challenges have implications not only for the mining industry in South Africa, but for the tertiary education providers whose graduates would have been absorbed into the mine-related workforce."

This paper presents an evaluation of the effect that the mineral feed characteristics have on the metallurgical performance in an industrial flotation circuit. Variables such as mineralogy, particle size, solid content and mineral grade were evaluated using a flotation simulator, which was previously developed and validated using industrial data from different concentrators. The metallurgical performance was evaluated not only from the point of view of recovery and concentrate grade, but also by analysing less common variables such as froth carrying rate, froth and collection recovery, water recovery and others. Then, new data from the industrial flotation circuit was used to complement this analysis and evaluate the simulator predictability by comparing simulated and measured data. The results allowed for the quantification of the significant effect that mineralogy and particle size have on recovery and/or concentrate grade. Therefore, the grinding stage and flotation cells design become important factors to avoid a significant loss in metallurgical performance when feed mineral characteristics change in an industrial operation. In this context, an evaluation of cells design and arrangement should be performed to compensate the loss in recovery and concentrate grade in order to find an optimal operating condition. Pillar design is a crucial aspect of underground mining engineering, as it directly impacts the safety, stability, and overall effectiveness of mining operations. In this paper we present a method to calculate pillar stability based on the strain criterion and pillar load inversion concept, which complements the empirical pillar strength formulae. Those formulae do not account for certain parameters that can affect the stability of the pillars, e.g. weak layers, changes in stress orientations due to mining, orebody dip, mining layout complexity, and the influence of regional stabilizing pillars. The approach presented here is not intended to replace the empirical method; rather, we suggest using it as the initial step in the pillar design process. This should be followed by iterative numerical modelling to study pillar behaviour, define pillar stability, and optimize the pillar design by considering site-specific and representative rock mass properties and criteria.

The current method employed to quantify the efficiency of separation of ferromagnetic ores by wet low intensity magnetic drum separators (WLIMS) incorporates the use of a conventional benchscale Davis Tube (DT) operating at a magnetic field intensity that is equivalent to that of the drum’s surface. However, empirical research has indicated that the magnetic force, or force index, rather than the magnetic field intensity, is the critical factor in the operation of the magnetic separator (Murariu and Svoboda, 2002). Furthermore, the current aforementioned practice would yield incorrect information as the magnetic field gradients produced by a typical WLIMS unit differs considerably from that of a bench-scale DT. In light of this, research on magnetite focusing primarily on the scale-up of DT results to pilotscale WLIMS were undertaken. The investigation entailed a comparative study between that of a typical WLIMS circuit and a bench-scale DT. The purpose was to practically evaluate the performance of a WLIMS, bench-marked against the traditional laboratory-scale DT unit. Moreover, the secondary objective was to produce a magnetite concentrate graded at 69% Fe, 95% -45μm, as a suitable source of separation media for use in the Dense Medium Separation (DMS) industry. Fundamental findings of previous works provided a framework for the study, however, a realworld approach was explored. Preliminary testwork conducted at Mintek investigated the performance of a DT and a typical multi-stage laboratory-scale WLIMS circuit (operating at 1000 Gauss at the surface). The results attained indicated that a DT operating at high intensities is comparable to a single rougher WLIMS stage. Additionally, it was observed that the three stage laboratory-scale WLIMS circuit performed similarly to the DT operating at 1000 Gauss. Moreover, piloting testwork was undertaken, carried out in larger 380mm drums, and the results attained showed a strong correlation with laboratory-scale findings. A research project was carried out on a gold mine in the Vaal River region of South Africa (Witwatersrand Basin) to evaluate the effect of two particular aspects of rockbolt installation – the angle of inclination of the bolt relative to the orientation of the rock surface, and the protruding length of the bolt – on the mine’s gully support system. A keyblock analysis approach indicated that these factors do not have an adverse impact on the stability of the strike gullies. This was confirmed by extensive empirical data collected from the case study mine. While safety is the primary concern, cost saving opportunities can be realized through reconsidering historically inherited support standards that are perceived to be correct and appropriate. The research described in this paper sets forth a practical approach, that is easy to implement and repeatable, to evaluate the role of rockbolts in stoping gullies.

"After detonation of the explosive, the final blast-induced damage area around the blast-hole falls into three categories, namely crushed zone, fractured zone, and elastic deformation zone. This paper presents a modified model to calculate the size of crushed zone around a blast-hole in drill-and-blast, with the hoop compressive stress and cavity expansion effect taken into account. The material in the crushed zone was assumed to be a granular medium without cohesion, but with internal friction. On this basis, the formula for crushing zone radius was derived. The proposed approach was verified with tests reported in the literature and the simulated results from SPH-FEM coupled models. A full statistical analysis was also carried out, and the predicted values were found to be in better agreement with the test results compared with other models. A sensitivity analysis of the modified model showed that the size of the blast-induced damage area is mainly affected by the following factors: rock mass properties, in situ stress, and borehole pressure. In particular, the roles of borehole pressure and in situ stress are discussed. Finally, suggestions are made on how the size of the crushing zones can be decreased. IntroductionOver the past decades, drill-and-blast has become the most commonly used technology in rock excavation. It is well known that in rock mass fragmentation with explosives, the annular rocks around the blast-hole are converted into fines. The formation of these fines consumes a significant part of the energy of the detonation, which in general is ignored in the determination of the efficiency of detonation (Glatolenkov and Ivanov, 1992; Furtney et al., 2012). Many studies show that only 20–30% of the total explosive energy is effectively used in fragmenting the rock, and up to 50% of the energy generated by conventional charges is wasted in overcrushing of the crushed zone and the inner part of the fractured zone (Ouchterlony et al., 2004; Sanchidrian et al., 2007). How to control the crushed zone to enhance the effective utilization of explosive energy, reducing the unit explosive consumption and the engineering cost, is therefore of great significance."

"The start of mining operations often raises serious financial problems. In marginal cases promoters frequently demand financial aid from governments.In the past, the financial assistance has taken the form of gifts, procurement contracts, etc., but aid in such form has been severely criticized. A new formula has been developed to provide a more equitable distribution of the revenues accruing to the government and to private capital.The benefits to these two parties have been evaluated in an hypothetical case and compared in terms of internal rates of return on their investment, their shares of the undiscounted cash flows and their primary profits.The method based on the non-zero sum game theory provides a means for suggesting the lowest feasible annual production and the optimal sum contributed by the government in the form of outright gift, equity capital and convertible bonds. Other financial hypotheses can also be optimized by the computerized analysis."

To be held from the 9th to 14th April, 1972, in Johannesburg, South Africa. GENERAL INFORMATION The first symposium in the series was staged by the University of Arizona in 1961. Since then Stanford University, Colorado School of Mines, Pennsylvania State University and the Society of Mining Engineers of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers have acted together with the University of Arizona as co-sponsors of the series. The 9th Symposium in 1970 was sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy together with McGill University and Ecole Poly technique in Montreal. The 10th Symposium, the first to be held outside the North American continent, is being organised by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the South African Council for Automation and Computation) in close collaboration with the previous co-sponsors. OBJECTIVES Mineral ventures increase in scale and complexity. The planning and control of these projects requires more and more sophisticated techniques. The intention of the symposium is to pool and exchange experience and knowledge and also to discuss new and potential developments. The papers presented in the main sessions, which will extend over one week, will together indicate progress which has been made in the successful application of operations research, mathematical, statistical and computer methods in each of the various aspects of operation in the mineral industry. A coherent account will be developed by consideration, in consecutive sessions, of the stages through which mineral prospects evolve in the course of their life. Primary aims are thus to stimulate discussion in depth of previous applications, to highlight current trends and to provide guidelines for future developments. PARTICIPATION The intention is to bring together persons responsible for managing the various operations in the mineral industry and the workers engaged in the development of mathematical and computer methods relevant thereto. SYMPOSIUM TOPICS 1. Market Analysis-demand and supply trends, models of mineral markets, price prediction. 2. Exploration and ore reserve estimation--exploration strategies, choice of drilling and sampling patterns, quantification of geological information, geo-statistical analysis, ore reserve assessment. Storage and retrieval of associated data. 3. Project design and analysis-influence on viability and risk of capitalisation, scale and method of operation, processing, uncertainties in design premises. 4. Planning of operation-planning and scheduling of construction, of development and of depletion of ore reserves. Logistics, rock mechanics and ventilation. 5. Control of operations-financial, production, cost and quality control as applied to both mining and processing. Flow and processing of relevant information. CALL FOR PAPERS An invitation is extended to intending authors to submit a synopsis, in 200 to 300 words, of papers which would develop the themes outlined above. The Programme Sub-Committee will choose, on the basis of these synopses, some 20 to 30 authors who will be invited to submit papers. Selection will be aimed at the provision of a coherent structure. Other authors may be invited to submit short papers either as contributions to the primary papers or for brief discussion in ancillary sessions which will be scheduled to follow on the main sessions. The official language of the symposium will be English. As many as possible of the shorter papers and prepared contributions will also be pre-printed. PROCEEDINGS All of the main and ancillary papers together with edited discussion will be published shortly after the symposium in a single volume. TOURS AND VISITS A choice of visits to relevant local undertakings on a day during the course of the symposium will be available to participants. These will include a deep level gold mine. A tour which will include mineral projects of interest and the Kruger National Game Park will be arranged in the week following the symposium. LADIES' PROGRAMME Arrangements will be made for the reception and entertainment of ladies. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation will be available at hotels convenient to the symposium venue. The cost of reasonable hotel accommodation in Johannesburg is in the range R5 to RIO (7 to 14 U.S. dollars) per person per night. All reservations and associated arrangements may be made through agents to be appointed by the organisers in due course. FEES AND COSTS Symposium fees will not exceed R70 (100 U.S. dollars). These will include registration, one copy of the published proceedings, a set of pre-prints of the main papers, teas and lunches during the course of the symposium, and the various official social events as well as the mid-week visits. Accommodation, travel and post-symposium tour charges are not included in this figure. The Technical Programme Committee-Metals Technology of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, in association with its Vaal Triangle Branch, held a one-day colloquium on 18th April, 1989, the theme being 'Ferous Pyrometalurgy: A Challenge for South Africa'. The venue was the Auditorium 100 at the campus of the Vaal Triangle Technikon in Vanderbijlpark. Project and contract management A Project and Contract Management Conference is to be held on 19th and 20th September, 1989, at the C SIR, Pretoria. Powder metallurgy The PM 90 exhibition is to be held in Wembley, London, from 2nd to 6th July, 1990. The wide range of powders, processing machinery, and powder-metallurgy components at the exhibition will reflect the growth in this highly specialist industry. Castings and forgings Exhibition organizers, FMJ International Publications Ltd, are set to build upon the success of Castings & Forgings '88, which was held as a joint event with Pat- Cast '88. Castings & Forgings '89-with Pat-Cast '89- has already generated a high level of interest, which has been reflected in the demand for stands. Furnaces FURNACES '90, the eighth in this series of exhibitions for the thermal-processing industry, will be held in Solihul, West Midlands, England, on 6th and 7th March, 1990.

Mineral processing produces a saleable product from high-cost ore. The Mineral Processing Engineer must constantly improve the separation to create the most value from the ore and reduce the associated costs. Graduate Metallurgists (or Chemical Engineers) have had the university theoretical training required, but often are illprepared to perform their plant roles. The in-work Metcelerate programme was designed specifically to develop the practical skills that Mineral Process Engineers require, by combining three key elements: 1. Knowledge transfer through self-paced, on-line training; 2. Practical skills acquisition through assessed, practical plant exercises; 3. Skills development through online tutorials. A final process improvement project adds significant value to the operation that far exceeds the training cost. Experience from Metcelerate clients has indicated improved staff retention, greater confidence, and pro-active process intervention.

Slope stability is a fundamental part of a successful mining operation. It impacts directly on the safety of personnel and the economics of the mine. The Jwaneng Mine in Botswana is planning a push back of 644m depth in the south east wall. Mining will commence in 2010 and be completed in 2024. This will put the mine in the deep pit category. The mine has invested in extensive geotechnical data gathering and design programs that started as far back as 2003 for the south east wall. The south east wail of Jwaneng Mine is characterized by foliation that dips adversely into the mining faces. The orienta1ion of the foliation is variable due to intense tectonic movements that have also caused the occurrence of faults that are sub-vertical. A considerable amount of information on the characteristics of structural patterns and the rock mass has been collected. This paper presents an overview of the feasibility level geotechnical design that is about to be concluded.
