The method for predicting coke strength developed at Steinkohlenberg-bauverein, Germany, in which experimental parameters are readily determined by small-scale laboratory tests, was found to be applicable to cokes produced from industrially used blends of American coals. Predicted 1-inch ASTM tumbler indices for four industrial blends were found to be in excellent agreement with the experimentally determined values. The laboratory determined prediction parameters include the proximate analysis of the coal the size consist of the coal, and Ruhr dilatometer test data.

The Bureau of Mines determined the kinetics of the reaction of titanium-iron alloys with titanium trichloride dissolved in sodium chloride to provide a basis for understanding the reactions occurring in metallurgical processes involving reduction of the metal halides or alloy refining in fused salts. The rate of the heterogeneous reaction was determined between titanium-iron alloys and titanium trichloride to elucidate the effects of alloy composition on the rate. Measurements were made in an inert atmosphere with a high-temperature thermobalance using high-purity reactants. The rates of the reactions were about 1 x 10-5 g Ti/cm2-sec, and the reaction was phase-boundary controlled. Titanium alloys of the body-centered cubic beta structure reacted faster than those with the hexagonal close-packed alpha structure. The inter-metallic compound, TiFe, reacted very slowly, whereas TiFe2 was inert. Alloys containing above 89 atomic percent iron gained weight by reacting with titanium species in the salt solution and depositing titanium in the alloy. The effect of TiCl3 concentration on the reaction rate was determined from 2 to 12 weight-percent TiC13 and at various alloy compositions. At high iron contents, above 50 atomic percent, the TiC13 concentration effect was small. At lower iron contents, the TiC13 concentration effect was greater for beta-crystalline alloys than for alpha-crystalline alloys. The temperature dependence of the reaction between titanium alloy containing 8.7 atomic percent iron and titanium trichloride was measured over the temperature range 1,062° to 1,220° K, and the energy of activation was 7.7 kilocalories for the reaction.

"In the course of the Government's Fuel Economy Survey of its own power plants, studies and tests have been made of various oil-burning equipments under power-plant boilers. There are now many types of burners being offered in the relatively limited field of power-plant use. The majority of the types used may be grouped into two general classes- those using steam to effect the atomizing of the oil, and those using mechanical means.Burners using steam have had the most prominence in this field for a long period. The mechanical atomizing type of burner successfully applied on shipboard, however, pointed to a possible betterment in land work. The vision presented itself of a burner that would need no steam for atomizing that would permit of air inlets or registers compactly arranged as a part of the entire burner, and that would only require the natural stack draft usually available in land boiler furnaces. Hence, rather recently there has been much development along this line, resulting in various types of burners.In Table 1 are grouped test items chosen from many tests showing representative analyses of the products of combustion obtained with various burners installed in various types of furnaces. In all these tests the burners were handled by experts and represent practically the best attainable for that particular arrangement. The boiler efficiencies ranged from 70% to 80%. It will be noted that the burners using steam for atomizing were able to secure slightly better 002 and less 02 without the presence of CO."

A computer model of an existing mine ventilation system can be executed using data developed from ventilation survey results. This model can then be used to analyze and evaluate proposed modifications to the system. The acquisition of field measurements during a ventilation survey and the corresponding development of this information into computer input data have been discussed in detail in the preceding chapters. In this chapter, the data are used in computer-oriented analysis of the mine ventilation system. The PSU/MVS was selected for use because of its advanced capabilities. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine chosen for this application is located in Western Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh coal seam, having an average height of 5-1/4 to 6-1/2 ft, is mined under approximately 300 to 500 ft of cover. The mine preparation plant and shipping facilities are located at the seam outcrop along a river; mining has progressed from the outcrop to an area about 10 miles from the pit mouth so that there are extensive worked-out areas through which access is maintained to the current mining area. Coal haulage is by conveyor to an underground transfer point, located four miles from the pit mouth, and then by high speed rail haulage to the preparation plant. The rail haulage link is scheduled for replacement by a conveyor in the near future. Mining at the present time is limited to the room and pillar method using continuous miners. Longwall mining had been attempted in the past with only limited success; as a result, several panels originally laid out for longwall mining are currently being extracted by room and pillar work. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated recovery of manganese from basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking slags because the slags represent a large potential resource of a metal for which there is no domestic production. BOF slags were leached using fluosilicic acid, a byproduct of the fertilizer industry. Manganese and iron were extracted as soluble manganous and ferrous fluosilicates while the calcium and magnesium remained in the tailings as insoluble fluorides. Treating the pregnant liquor with sodium chloride, precipitated sodium fluosilicate (Na2Sif6) which was recovered as a byproduct. Manganese and iron were precipitated as hydroxide-carbonate salts with the addition of sodium carbonate to the treated liquor. Recoveries for manganese and iron were 73 to 83 and 67 to 70 pet, respectively.

Electronegativities of the rare-earth elements were calculated from heats of formation. The values obtained from different compounds varied widely. The postulates of Pauling's electronegativity theory were interpreted for bonds that are primarily ionic; the study showed that many compounds obey rules of the form expected. Revised electronegativity values are given for the more electropositive elements, including the rare-earth metals (which are near magnesium in electronegativity). Estimates of un-known heats of formation are made from electronegativities and are compared with other estimates. INTRODUCTION Calculation of the electronegativities of the rare-earth elements is interesting to show how these metals stand relative to the other metals and to each other, and also possibly to systematize the thermochemical data on them.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a procedure for removing excess iron from representative samples of bauxite ore from the Quapaw deposit of American Cyanamid Co., Saline County, Ark., in order to produce a beneficiated ore suitable for use in the alum industry, At the request of the sponsoring company, the samples were reduction-roasted at 800° C. and then magnetically separated. Although some rejection of iron was effected under these conditions, the general results were not satisfactory, A much more successful procedure, from the standpoints of both rejection of iron and recovery of alumina, consisted of a short (l5-minute), low-temperature (400° C.) oxidizing roast, followed by a 2-minute interval in a hydrogen atmosphere, then cooling to room temperature, and, finally, high-intensity magnetic separation to remove the iron.

Reduce the dust exposure to the operator of a longwall shearer with a novel foam spray system. Approach Discharge foam through the nozzles of a shearer drum so that foam and coal are better mixed. How It Works Bureau of Mines research showed that two very important principles for successful application of foam are: (1) moisture distribution and (2) degree of mixing. Foam can distribute a given quantity of moisture much more evenly over a large surface area. Successful Bureau tests of foam for dust control always involve a high degree of mixing between the foam and the material, Mixing, permits a greater distribution of foam throughout the mined product. The most suitable location of foam application would be at the point where the dust is generated, before the dust becomes airborne. Foam nozzles located in the cutter drum (pick face foaming or ejecting foam through scroll sprays) will suppress dust close to its source.

"Fatal accidents at coal mines throughout the United States killed 234 employees during January 1924, according to reports from State mine inspectors to the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior, Included in the number of fatalities are 68 deaths caused by two explosions during the month, one explosion occurring in a mine at Johnson City, Ill., and causing 32 deaths, and the other in a mine at Shanktown, Pa., and causing 36 deaths. The fatality rate for the month was 3.94 per million tons, based on a production of 59,435,000 tons of coals In January 1923 the fatality rate was 3.52, based on 206 deaths and an output of 58,458,000 tons.Bituminous mines in all States reported 202 fatal accidents, the production being 51,170,000 tons., and the fatality rate being 3.92, as compared with 3.28 for January last year, For the anthracite mines in Pennsylvania, the reports covered 32 fatalities, which, on the month's output of 7,955,000 tons, indicated a fatality rate of 4.02 per million tons, as against 4.89 for January 1923.As compared with January 1923, the reports for January of the present year indicated lower fatality rates per million tons for all of the main causes of accidents except explosions. For falls of roof and coal, the fatality rate per million tons declined from 1.85 in January 1923 to 1,68 in January 1924; for haulage accidents the rate declined from 0.62 to 0.42; for explosives, from 0.19 to 0.12; for electricity, from 0.12 to 0.07. Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for loading shovels. Approach An automatic fire, sensing and suppression system using both dry chemical and Halon 1301 was developed. It is more rugged than similar industrial-type fire protection systems. How It Works Temperature sensors detect heat from a fire, and trigger the system. These sensors are located inside the machinery house and under the house and shovel frame where it rotates around the crawler chassis ring gear. An alarm is sounded, and extinguishing agents are released either in the machinery house or in the ring gear area. The system can also be triggered by a manual control. If the fire Is detected in the machinery house, all power is shut down to the motor-generator sets, ventilation fan, and all electrical controls. Doors are automatically closed. After a delay to allow time for the ventilation fan to stop, Halon 1301, a gaseous fire extinguishing agent, is released inside the machinery house until it reaches a concentration of about 7 percent. This concentration is sufficient to extinguish a fire, but isn't toxic to personnel

The chemical properties of the unsaturated members of the aliphatic series of hydrocarbons are such as to render them " made to order" starting points or basic . materials for the synthesis of hundreds of important organic chemicals . The tremendous quantities of these unsaturated compounds that are being produced daily in the various coal carbonization and oil refining processes , and which at present have little value other than that of fuel , render a survey of the identity and ex- tent of occurrence of these compounds important from the viewpoint of economic utilization and resource conservation The increased need of liquid fuel and the relatively early exhaustion of petroleum resources will eventually require every utilization of liquid fuel products obtainable directly or indirectly from coal . Accordingly , the Bureau of Mines took advantage of an opportunity for examining the gaseous unsaturated hydrocarbons found in the gas obtained when a mixture of water- Collection of the material gas tar and coal is distilled in a gas-making retort . for examination was made possible through the courtesy of the Trent Process Corporation , Washington , D.C. , which was at that time carrying on at the Georgetown Gas Works , distillation of " amal gams " prepared from various coals and oils by the Trent process for cleaning coals . Kanawha gas coal ( 70%) and water gas tar ( 30 % ) from the Washington Gas Light plant were used in the " amal gam" being distilled at that time . The results obtained in this examination are presented here .

Infrared spectroscopy employing attenuated total reflectance (ATR) techniques on thin films of dried gelatinized starch solution was used during Bureau of Mines research to determine the structural and impurity differences in starch products and to correlate these characteristics with the flotation response of a nonmagnetic taconite. All of the starch products evaluated gave spectrograms which were characteristic of the anhydroglucose monomer and its polymerization product. Distinct infrared absorption peaks caused by the protein molecule were observed and were used to classify the starches. Correlation of laboratory flotation of calcium-activated gangue from a Mesabi Range nonmagnetic taconite and infrared spectra produced from gelatinized starches showed that protein impurities and linear chain structure limited the effectiveness of starches as iron mineral depressants. Starch products having spectrograms similar to pure amylopectin were generally good depressants for iron oxides, were effective at about one-half the addition that was required for starches that gave infrared responses similar to pure amylose, and yielded acceptable iron concentrates containing 61.5 percent iron and 6.5 percent silica.

The Bureau of Mines used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas to evaluate the effectiveness of gob ventilation and/or sealing practices at three coal mines, each having different problems associated with their mined-out areas. The purpose of these ventilation studies was to better understand whether current techniques employed for ventilation or sealing are successful at minimizing the potential for gob fires and explosions. The work performed at each mine is discussed: One is a long-wall operation that uses ventilation to carry off hazardous gases, and two are room-and-pillar operations, each with far different concerns, that seal off the gobs to isolate them from the main mine ventilation. In all cases employment of the Bureau's SF6 tracer gas technique resulted in answers to questions raised by the mine operators concerning the effectiveness of their gob ventilation or sealing practices in preventing mine fires.

This report presents experimental data on the propagation of explosion- generated strain pulses in rock. Tests were performed in 5 different rock types, employing 10 different types of explosives. Charge sizes ranged from 0.5 to 50 pounds, and travel distances ranged from 2.5 to 70 feet. Analysis of the data shows that the experimental peak strain data satisfy an exponential decay propagation law of the form: ?R/W1/3 = Ke ?aR/W1/3. For a particular rock, parameter K is a linear function of the calculated detonation pressure or the calculated energy density of the explosive. For a particular explosive, K is a linear function of the elastic parameter of the rock, p2, a result, which is at variance with elastic theory. The absorption constant, a, is independent of type of explosive but dependent upon rock type. However, no definite relation between a and the physical properties of the rock could be established.

Determine what diameter piping is necessary to obtain sufficient water flow to spray nozzles used for dust suppression. Approach A simplified, diagrammatic method of calculating the flow of water through a proposed system consisting of a supply line and two banks of spray nuzzles is outlined. How It Works The pressure versus flowrate of the supply at the tapping point must be known or measured. The supply curve of typical city water at a 1 ¼ -inch pipe outlet is shown by the lowest curve in Figure 1. A supply curve for a typical pump fed from an open sump is shown by the middle curve. The combination of these, the supply curve of a pump fed by the city water supply is shown by adding the lower two curves to get the upper curve. A pump supply curve showing flowrate versus pressure is usually supplied by the manufacturer. The water supply line flow curve can be determined by measuring the time required to fill a 55 gallon barrel at various valve settings to determine flow, and by measuring corresponding pressures at the valve with a gauge.

Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for AN-FO haulers. Approach An automatic fire sensing and suppression system for AN-FO haulers was developed and on-vehicle tested. How It Works The system works in two ways to protect personnel from dangerous and unpredictable AN-FO fires. First the system senses and suppresses fires on the truck before they spread to the AN-FO in the bunker. This design was chosen because AN-FO truck fires generally start when combustible liquids (such as diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid or lubricating oils) are ignited by hot surfaces mainly on three areas: the engine, the transmission or the power take-off. These fires are quickly sensed by a linear temperature sensor strung throughout these three areas. The system then warns the operator and automatically suppresses the fire by discharging 30 pounds of multipurpose dry chemical extinguishing agent through a network of fixed hoses and nozzles. Second, this system includes six spot thermal sensors mounted inside the bunker on the truck to monitor the AN-FO temperature in case a fire does spread to the bunker area. The Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the 32,270-hectare Cache Peak study area in 1992; the area had been proposed as wilderness. Bureau personnel examined and sampled prospect workings; 50 rock and placer samples were taken during the investigation. The study area is centered about 25 km southeast of Challis, Idaho, in the Challis National Forest. According to May, 1993, Bureau of Land Management mining claim records there were no current mining claims located inside the study area. Up to 100 claims may have been located in the study area in the past. Gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc: Significant analyses, poor exposure precludes resource estimate. Limestone: More than I billion tonnes may be chemically suitable for a variety of uses, markets too distant to favor mining. Dolomite: More than 1 billion tonnes may be chemically suitable for producing magnesium metal, markets too distant to favor mining. Sand and Gravel: Several million m3, but markets and transportation costs do not favor mining. Chalcedonic nodules: Two localities in the study area may be of interest to hobbyists who cut and polish stone. There is no reported past production from the study area.

APPENDIX A - PNEUMATIC TRANSPORT OF FLY ASH 1. Introduction Two types of pneumatic transport of fly ash are critical to the success of (1) Transport of fly ash from the fly ash truck to the entrance to the borehole. Depending on the surface topography, this may be horizontal, decential and ascential. (2) Vertical downflow of fly ash through the borehole. All fly ash trucks have limited pressure with which they can pump the fly ash. Thus, the pressure drop in the fly ash hose will define the maximum length for pumping and consequently the maximum distance that the fly ash truck can be parked from the auxiliary blower. The same relationships describe the flow of the dilute fly ash-air mixture produced by mixing with the auxiliary air from the blower and thus define the selection of the pipe diameter. These are im¬portant considerations in the proper selection of the location of the passages to be sealed and the type of surface preparation required. The flow characteristics of fly ash down the borehole determine the selection of the minimum borehole diameter and the blower pressure. This appendix presents theoretical analyses of these flow regimes and summarizes the limited experimental data obtained during the field tests at Grant Town, described in Section 8.4. The analysis for the borehole flow is presented first as it is of greater interest to the program. This is followed by a discussion of the horizontal flow.

A novel approach to eliminating environmental and public safety hazards that are associated with fires in abandoned coal mines and waste banks involves the use of in situ combustion technology developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines to accelerate the burning of the wasted coals in place. This technology would be used under exhaust ventilation control conditions that would allow for total management of the hot gases produced. Combustion stoichiometries would be optimized to minimize unburnt combustibles and to maximize the heat content of the gas products, which will be exhausted at one or more fan locations. When necessary, scrubber systems would be employed to remove air pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide; heat utilization systems (process heat, steam, and electricity) would also be employed to offset operational costs. Ultimately, complete burnout would solve the fire and acid water formation problems of the abandoned coal mine or waste bank. Pertinent technical data for burnout control are derived and discussed in terms of the important material and operational parameters. In general, it is believed feasible to operate a burnout system in an existing abandoned mine or waste bank fire at thermal power levels in the range of 10 to 100 Mw, and at exhaust gas temperatures of 1,000° C (1,830° F).
