"A number of Reports of Investigations pertaining to the extraction of potash from cal¬cined polyhalite have been made by various members of the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines. These reports describe results obtained in the study of samples of polyhalite (2CaS04.K2S04.MgS04.2H20) from deposits of possible com¬mercial importance in Texas and New Mexico.3Storch and Clarke6 in their initial paper presenting data on the properties of Texas polyhalite demonstrated the desirability of calcination and subsequent hot extraction with water as a satisfactory pronedure for treatment of this potash-bearing salt. Their preliminary data have been supplemented by an additional report7 dealing more particularly with the leaching of raw and calcined polyhalite with water and with saturated sodium chloride solu¬tions. Further data8 have been reported as a result of experiments made in a small labora¬tory rotary-tube furnace under various calcination and extraction conditions. Hot water was used as the leaching solution in all of these tests.In addition to the data on calcination and extraction, two processes as proposed by Storch and Clarke have been published by Wroth,9 and more recently a number of very promising processes have been proposed by Storoh and Fragen.10"

This paper describes mining and milling methods of the American Smelting & Refining Co. at the Morning mine in the Mullan area of the Coeur d'Alene mining region in Idaho and is one of a series of Bureau of Mines reports dealing with methods and costs of mining throughout the United States. The Morning mine has been described previously in a Bureau of Mines report published in 1930,2/ and the milling methods and costs at the Morning concentrator were presented in a Bureau of Mines report published in 1932. 3/ These reports are supplemented by this publication, which presents data to show the effect of changing times and conditions on a typical medium-size mining operation during the latter part of its history, when costs were rising and production was from increasingly greater depths. The report contrasts two periods in the history of the mine-periods not too far separated in years but considerably different in economic conditions. During the first period (1939) costs of labor and materials were moderate, mining operations were just being transferred from the main shaft to deeper workings opened from the offset shaft, and the operation prospered. During the second period (12 years later) production costs had increased following the national trend in all industry, mining was from greater depths near the bottom of the ore body, and the operation was becoming unprofitable. Mining on the lower levels of the property ceased in 1953.

ECONOMIC recovery, which began in 1958, carried through into 1959 but was somewhat retarded by the 116-day steel strike beginning in July 1959. Recovery and economic growth increased production and consumption of mineral fuels 3 percent above 1958. The increase was accomplished despite a drop of 26 percent in coal exports. Prices remained constant during the year so that the value of production and consumption also increased 3 percent over 1958. Stocks in the hands of producers at yearend were little changed from the supply at the beginning of the year. Employment in the field of mineral fuels decreased 6.4 percent from 1958. Average hourly earnings were up 7 percent, and average hours worked were up 5 percent, with the result that weekly earnings gained 11.8 percent. Internal freight rates were relatively constant, but ocean tanker rates declined both in 1958 and 1959 from the high rates charged during the Suez crisis. The index of major input expenses decreased for anthracite, held constant for bituminous coal, and increased for petroleum. The index of labor cost per dollar of product and per ton of product declined again in 1959 to a new low in anthracite and bituminous-coal mining industries.

The use of explosives to fragment rock generates ground vibrations which may have a detrimental effect on contiguous underground coal mine openings. Increased surface blasting by a burgeoning number of surface coal mines and quarries has caused considerable concern among underground mine operators. Ground vibration effects generated from surface mine blasting are also causing public concern. In response to this concern, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Stagg and Engler, 1980) has measured and analyzed ground vibrations and their effects on underground and surface structures. Some of the complaints registered against the mining industry are claims of substantial material damage from vibrations generated by the blasting; others are nuisance complaints of minor damage or annoyance. In general, allegations of damage from surface blasting have been sufficiently numerous to constitute a major problem for mine operators engaged in blasting operations. They have recognized the need for more technological data to evaluate the vibration problems associated with blasting. Both the operators and the general public need adequate safeguards based upon factual data to protect their specific interests. The coal mine industry needs reliable information from which to change blasting operations to reduce the number and severity of major damage claims and eliminate the growing number of nuisance complaints. The problem is of major concern not only to coal mine operators and nearby property owners, but also to federal, state and local governments. At the same time, environmental control agencies responsible for blasting and explosives use require reasonable and appropriate guidelines to protect the miners&apos; lives.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, did a linear analysis for a new underground coal mine in Grant County, WV, through the interpretation of LANDSAT imagery and high-altitude, color-infrared aerial photography, to identify areas of potentially unstable roof in advance of mining. The Bureau of Mines included this mine in its ongoing study of the correlation between geologic features and linears. Three years after the analysis, after mining had progressed through the plotted linears, a cooperative Bureau-MSHA study evaluated the effectiveness of the linear plot in predicting areas of unstable roof and defined the geology associated with the linears. Adverse roof conditions at this mine include roof falls, potted-out roof, water inflow, and local areas requiring supplemental support. At the time of this study, 34 pct of the mine workings were within 200 ft of a plotted linear. Fifty percent of the adverse roof area in the mine occurred within this area. The primary geologic anomaly associated with the linears is an increased frequency of jointing. The majority of the plotted linears coincide with the prominent joint orientations. Additional features observed in the linear zones include roof rolls and a sandstone channel that cuts into the coal seam.

An important objective of the Australian Government&apos;s policies on resources development is to encourage further processing of raw materials domestically, to the extent that this is economically feasible and consistent with sound industrial development. This Bureau of Mines report examines the extent to which Australia is able to pursue this policy in terms of its own competitive advantages and the implications of such a policy for the United States. Such factors as the impact of other competing producers and their advantages, expected world demand, and infrastructural problem--which may limit pursuit of this policy to the fullest extent--are discussed. After a broad review of the re-source, economic, social, and environmental factors, the perspective for increased processing is examined for a number of mineral commodities.

To obtain information on the effects of cobalt on microstructure and tensile properties of titanium-vanadium-cobalt alloys, the composition ranges of 4 to 16 percent vanadium with 1 to 4 percent cobalt have been studied. The beta phase was not completely retained with vanadium additions up to 16 weight-percent or in the same alloys containing up to 4 percent cobalt.

A computer program was written for design and cost of a shell and tube heat exchanger in which the total cost, which includes annual fixed charges and annual operating costs, was minimized. The program was written for the type of heat exchanger in which only the tube side pumping costs were significant and for triangular pitch, single or multiple pass, heating or cooling, and no change in phase. Tube diameter was not optimized since the tube dimensions do not affect the cost very much. However, the tube dimensions do affect the shell diameter, number of tubes, and length of tubes; and price optimum design was obtained for four standard tube diameters. Standard heat exchangers having at least the required area are also listed. The program was made adaptable to various fluids and to various tube dimensions by including many of the required data such as physical properties of the fluids, tube data, and standard shell data as input data.

This paper is the result of a comparative study of ultimate coal analyses made and published by the United States Geological Survey. This study, at first casually undertaken to devise an acceptable classification of coals based on chemical analyses, was continued in connection with a microscopic examination of a number of the coals. The initial comparisons, made from a relatively small number of analyses, not only confirmed a previous conviction that the elimina- tion of oxygen incident to the development of a coal is economically far more important than has been generally suspected, but also showed that oxygen is very nearly as harmful as ash in coal. The immediate purposes of the present study were: (a) To deter- mine more definitely, from a comparative examination of a large number of ultimate analyses, the relative importance of oxygen as an impurity in various coals; (b) to illustrate the transition between various grades of coal of similar origin-transition mainly due to progressive devolatilization, brought about more or less directly by dynamic influences; (c) to ascertain the relative proportions of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon in coking coals, especially with refer- ence to a theory tentatively framed to explain the coking quality; and (d) to forecast the probabilities of successfully treating a large number of coals so as to render them amenable, in a softened condition, to satisfactory study under the microscope. Although the hypothesis as to coking quality finds but partial support in the chemical analyses, its consideration has led to a method of predicting from an analysis with a fair degree of certainty whether any given coal will coke by the ordinary process. The unbroken transition between coals originally similar but now classed in widely different groups, whether of the same age or of different ages, as a result of dynamochemical action, appears demonstrated by the analyses as well as by field observation. The Bureau of Mines has started an engineering study of oil recovery by miscible-phase displacement. As a preliminary part of the investigation a literature and patent study was made to prevent duplication of work already done, to become acquainted with those actively engaged in research of this type, and to learn where the recovery method has been attempted. This bibliography gives results of this study. The bibliography includes 254 references to U.S. and foreign patents and published literature relating to miscible-phase displacement processes of oil recovery. It is divided into the following sections: (1) U.S. patents, (2) foreign patents, (3) literature references, (4) author index, and (5) publication and source reference. The patents and literature references are listed alphabetically by author by intervals of years. References to February 1963 are included.

The problem of removing hydrogen sulphide from natural gas has become within the last few years one of major importance to the natural gas and petroleum industry. Several gas fields in the United States produce natural gas containing hydrogen sulphide, and a number of oil fields produce gas which contains hydrogen sulphide. 3 The percentage of hydrogen sulphide in natural gas produced in these fields varies from a fraction of 1 per cent t6 as high as 20.5 per cent by volume. 4 Hydrogen sulphide is probably the most toxic gas associated with natural gas,5 and from the standpoint of health and safety it is important that the hydrogen sulphide be removed if the gas is to be used for domestic purposes. Hydrogen sulphide, besides being toxic and therefore a hazard to animal life, is under certain conditions an active corrosive agent and very destructive to equipment. 6 The annual loss caused by the corrosive action of hydrogen sulphide on equipment amounts to hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of dollars. 7 The largest percentage of natural gas produced in the United States comes from wells which also produce oil. This associated gas invariably carries with it light fractions of petroleum, which when separated from the gas, condense to the liquid form at ordinary temperatures and pressure. Commercial application is made of this natural condition, and "wet gas" is processed to obtain so-called natural gasoline by employing the principles of absorption, adsorption, or compression and subsequent expansion accompanied by cooling. Since the return of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division of the Bureau of Mines to normal peacetime functions following World War II, a coordinated program of oil and gas development and production research has been in prog- ress, and the importance of the problems has been evaluated so that the Bureau can render greater service to the oil and gas industry. Among the problems associated with development and production research, those concerned with efficient utilization of the Nation's reserves of hydro- carbons contained in gas-condensate type reservoirs continue to receive major emphasis. For a number of years an important part of the Bureau's work has been the study of two pressing problems associated with production from such reservoirs; first; an investigation of fluid properties, and the second, finding a means of controlling corrosion. Studies of the characteristics of gas-condensate fluids have resulted in the publication of a number of reports, which cover a broad field. In general they deal with subjects such as the properties of a fluid from a well; development of research equipment, means of combatting corrosion, and the many aspects of gas-condensate engineering. To provide experimental data on relative liquid and gas volumes and critical pressures and temperatures, a windowed cell was constructed that permits ob- servation of the fluid phase while making the tests. Experimentation in the field on the use of inhibitors to control corro- sion of equipment in gas-condensate wells has disclosed that solutions of chromate are effective retardants of corrosion. Engineering field studies of the Carthage and New Hope gas-condensate fields are in progress, and reports on the Sheridan and Lake Creek fields have been completed. It has long been known that ventilation is a cost-effective method to lower respirable dust concentrations in all types of mining applications. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has been working on a number of different research techniques that use ventilation as a critical component to lower respirable dust levels at surface and metal/nonmetal operations in the United States. This article presents five such research efforts. The first research area discusses how improving the ventilation flow patterns in an iron ore mill facility lowered respirable dust concentrations by 31 pct throughout the primary grinding area. The second research area examines how respirable dust levels were lowered at a dimensional stone shop by using air cleaning units suspended from the ceiling. A third area discusses how improvements in ventilation at underground limestone mines lowered respirable dust concentrations. The fourth area examines how improvements in dust filtration and pressurization systems significantly impacted the air quality in enclosed cabs of surface mining equipment. The last area presents a newly developed clothes cleaning technique. This technique uses an air spray manifold to blow dust from a worker?s clothing in an enclosed booth, which confines the dust for capture and removal by a baghouse dust collector. These research areas represent an array of different control technologies to lower respirable dust concentrations. Ventilation is an integral part of these control technologies.

This study is organized under the auspices of the Metal/Nonmetal Diesel Partnership formed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the National Mining Association (NMA), the National Stone Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA), the United Steel Workers of America (USWA) and the MARG Diesel Coalition. The ultimate objective of the study is to reduce the exposure of underground miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM) and gases, and to help in fulfilling the partnership’s goal of identifying technically and economically feasible controls to curtail particulate matter emissions from existing and new diesel powered vehicles in underground metal and nonmetal mines. The majority of current knowledge on the performance of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems and other control technologies is based on studies done under laboratory conditions, the results then being applied the results to on-highway vehicles. According to the best knowledge of the authors, only two comprehensive studies that were conducted recently at Noranda’s Bathurst Mining and Smelting Mine and International Nickel Company’s Stobie Mine under the sponsorship of the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program [McGinn 2001, Bugarski and Schnakenberg 2001, Bugarski and Schnakenberg 2002] offered some insight into the problems associated with the deployment of modern DPFs to underground mining vehicles. The U.S. mining industry has expressed concern that this rather limited knowledge base is not sufficient to help them comply with the rule limiting DPM exposure of underground metal and nonmetal miners [30 CFR 57.5060 2001]. The partnership agreed that a series of comprehensive field evaluations of DPFs in several underground mines was needed to determine their viability of DPF systems and establish confidence in their performance. The first in this series of studies was the one conducted in Stillwater Mining Company’s Nye Mine, Nye, Montana. This study was conducted in two phases. The objective of the first phase was to establish the effectiveness of the selected technologies in reducing diesel emissions by using an isolated zone methodology. The objective of the second phase was to assess the effectiveness of diesel particulate filters in controlling the exposure of underground miners in actual production scenarios. As part of the first phase of the study a series of tests were conducted at Nye Mine from May 19, 2003 until May 30, 2003. The results of Phase I of the study are presented in this report.

"Ventilation is one of the meet important factors in mining, although until recent years less thought has probably been given to effective ventilation than to any other one phase of mining. In the past, very little, if any, attention was given air courses until they became so constricted by falls that the volume of air was greatly reduced; and, in addition, the stoppings and doors were so poorly constructed that only a very small percentage of air reached the face workings.As a matter of fact, mines have been visited where the volume of air being circulated in certain sections was much larger than in others, and where the management was striving to increase the flow of air in those sections with the least air current, believing the ventilation to be deficient. After sampling and analyzing the return air from the various sections in such mines it has been found that the quality of the air in certain places with the largest flow was more impure than in some of those with the least flow.In past years, practically all mine fans were operated by steam-driven engines supplied with steam from the mire boiler plant. No check was made on the steam consumption or the power cost of operating the fan, therefore the management had very little if any definite information as to cost of ventilating the mine.With the increased use of electrically-driven equipment in mines electricity is being used more and more to drive mine ventilating fans, and since in many instances the current is purchased from central power plants operators have come to realize that in many cases the cost of operating the fans is very high. Some engineers estimate that it ranges from 20 to 50 per cent of the total power cost of the mine. This information, together with the fact that mines are now being developed on a larger scale, requiring larger quantities of air for the men to dilute the gases liberated, has caused the large progressive companies to make, a more comprehensive study of mine ventilation, resulting in a decided improvement in the quality and quantity of air at the face workings, as well as reducing materially the ventilating costs."

This report surveys the efforts of six contractors to the U.S. Bureau of Mines with regard to their electromagnetic noise measurement programs. What has been done, what is planned, and evaluations and recommendations are given for each contractor. The main observation is that to date there is not sufficient knowledge of electromagnetic interference in mine environments to design a reliable communication system. This knowledge should be available by the end of June 1972 if certain planned programs are completed successfully. A major effort of this report is to establish parameters to be measured, units to be used, and workable formats for data presentation. This is given in Appendix A. Some details concerning equipment, procedures, locations, and sample data are included in Appendix B.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the resources, costs, capacities, market relationships, and short-and long-term supply of bauxite, alumina, and aluminum. The 45 evaluated mines and deposits in 14 market economy countries (MEC&apos;s) have a demonstrated resource of 8.4 billion mt of bauxite and an aluminum content of approximately 2.1 billion mt. Developed world bauxite resources and existing primary aluminum smelting and refining capacity are sufficient to satisfy demand through at least 1995, when additional properties (with higher cost levels) would need to be developed to satisfy future demand levels. It is anticipated that new alumina or aluminum production most likely would occur in developing regions with large bauxite potential, low-cost energy sources, and a close proximity to refining and/or smelting capacity. An increase in aluminum recycling capacity would help meet future demand increases. A series of network model supply analyses was performed for the period 1988 through 2000. Based on announced future production levels and assuming demand grows at the level outlined in the analyses, model results indicate there is sufficient material available to meet demand until 1998, where-upon an aluminum shortfall is projected. Additional analyses investigated the effect of a reduced growth rate of demand and regional production variations in Venezuela on the international aluminum industry.
