A process for the manufacture of high-Btu gas from coal has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The process consists of fluid-bed gasification of the coal, followed by the gas treatment steps of gas purification and methanation. Advantages of the system are that caking coals can be used directly, and more than half of the ultimate methane is made in the gasifier.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the presence and extent of methane accumulations in mine roof cavities using a full-scale mine model. Methane was released at a constant rate into the roof of a cavity built onto a 700-ft wind tunnel. Two box-shaped roof cavities were used in the study: one had a volume of 114.7 cu ft; and the other had a volume of 57.3 cu ft. Methane concentration was measured at 28 sampling points in the cavities using 21 different combinations of gas emission rates and air velocities. Brattice hung in the cavity helped reduce methane concentrations without auxiliary ventilation. It was also found that the effective ventilation rate increased by a factor of 40 in the large cavity and by a factor of 20 in the small cavity when air velocity was increased from 100 to 600 fpm.

This study summarizes and amalgamates much information collected, compiled, and utilized by the Bureau of Mines numerous country specialists and branch chiefs for inclusion in their country and regional reports that comprise the five other volumes of the international studies of the Minerals Yearbook. Because of the plethora of sources used in preparing these regional studies, it is impossible to cite all sources of information used in preparing this summary, but some recognition seems due. Generally speaking, the preparation of this study, and its related detailed studies on countries and areas, would be impossible without the efforts of the personnel of our counterpart agencies throughout the world. Information that they collect, compile, and then publish, either in their own volumes or in publications of central statistical agencies in their countries, are the foundations upon which this work rests. Thus, we must begin by expressing our appreciation to the multitude of persons employed by these agencies for their contributions.

SCOPE AND APPLICATION The rules cover the installation and use of electrical equipment in coal mines.- For generating stations, substations, lines, and equip¬ment aboveground, reference is made to existing rules covering such locations, viz, the National Electrical Code and the National Electrical Safety Code and any existing State or municipal regulations. The purpose of the rules is to set forth methods for safe electrical installation. In preparing the rules five basic measures for safe¬guarding the use of electricity in mines have been followed, viz 1. Remove the contributory causes of accidents or danger. 2. Remove from the vicinity of electrical apparatus all elements susceptible to the influence of electricity. 3. Keep the electric current where it belongs, if possible; if not, limit the area of its activity by protective devices. 4. Use a. large factor of safety in the selection, installation, and in¬ spection of equipment. 5. Have full control of the operation of electrically driven machines. Each rule that is given is proposed as necessary or helpful to the accomplishment of one or more of these measures. DEFINITIONS OF TERMS USED Alive.-See definition of " live." An investigation has been made to determine the applicability of the Cendrex3 X-ray instrument for the measurement of the ash content of washed bituminous coal products. The results obtained for selected products from six preparation plants in the Appalachian region and one preparation plant in the mid-western region are described. Emphasis of the study was placed on low-ash bituminous coal products suitable for utility or metallurgical markets. There was good agreement between the results obtained by conventional ash determination methods and by ash determination using the Cendrex for all products tested.

"During the mining process, the insitu material is broken into different size ranges, from very, large pieces to very fine particles. Some of the fine particles become airborne. In underground coal mining, airborne respirable. dust is associated with health and safety of the miners: The amount and size distributions of airborne dust are important parameters to effective dust control measures. The design of underground mine experiments, including sampling procedures and sample analyses methods to determine these parameters are presented in this paper.. A total of fifteen continuous miner cuts were sampled. The amount of dust generated during the cutting process and the relationship between total and respirable airborne dust concentrations and amounts are examined.The amount of respirable dust airborne is on the average only. 0.016% of the respirable dust generated. On the average, 61% of the total .airborne dust measured is in the respirable size range. The amount of respirable airborne' is on the average 36% of the respirable size fraction in the total airborne dust. For equal proportion of rock and coal material cut, rock contributes about twice as much fines (<0.22 mm) as coal. Additional fundamental research is necessary to further the understanding of 'the airborne propensity of respirable dusts in mine atmospheres.INTRODUCTIONMining is a sequential process of breaking, gathering, loading, and transporting the in-situ .materials.' In underground coal mines, duet in both the non-respirable and respirable size ranges is generated and entrained in every phase of the process. Even though large amounts of dust particles' adhere to run-of-mine coals, part of the dust generated becomes airborne (Cheng and Zukovich, 1973). Studies have shown that bit type affects the amount of dust generated'(Evans and Pomeroy, 1966; Kurth et al., 1975; Roepke et al., 1976; Stecklein et al., 1982; and Khair and 'Reddy, 1986). Deep cutting can reduce airborne dust generation (Black and Schmidt, 1977 arid, Black et 1978). Mechanical properties of. coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. Laboratory studies have shown that Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) of the coal has a relationship with the amount of respirable. dust generated (Beafi and Ramani, 1979; Moore and Bise, 1984; and Moore, 1986). However, these relationships have not yet been validated with' data from the mines. The amount of dust airborne depends on a number of factors. Suppression of the airborne propensity of dust by water sprays is'widely practiced and is very effective. Water flow rate; pressure and configuration of water sprays have been identified as major factors affecting dust capture by sprays (Courtney and Cheng, 1977; Courtney et al., 1978; and Kissell et al., 1979). Ventilation is a very important means of controlling the dust level at the coal face (Jayaraman, 1977). According to a National Academy of Sciences study (1980), the mechanism of dust generation and the process by which the generated dust becomes airborne are complex and not yet completely understood coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. The Bureau of Mines studied the problems caused by airborne contaminants from welding exhaust in surface mining operations and investigated equipment designed to reduce existing hazards. Four commercially available welding-fume exhaust units were tested to determine their effectiveness. Results indicated that the four units had the capability of controlling airborne particulate concentrations and bringing them to within allowable exposure limits.

This is the Seventh of a series of publications that describe methods and practices used in mining bituminous coal mechanically.3/ This report deals with the operation referred to in coal mining as continuous mining, and the interest shown by mining companies in this method is the reason for this study. Only continuous mining as it applies to the room-and-pillar system of mining, or a modification thereon, is discussed in detail in this report. Although not always as continuous as the name implies, it is a system of mining in which a machine is used to cut and load coal in one continuous operation without drilling and blasting the coal. With the mining equipment in most general use today, the usual cycle of operation in mining of coal is: (1) Timber, (2) cut, (3) drill, (4) blast, and (5) load. As the phases of this type cycle cannot be performed simultaneously in the same working place, it is necessary to operate from 3 to 7 working places so that at least 1 place is available for coal loading at all times. Even if the schedule of the phases in a cycle is maintained, coal production ceases during the time required to move the loading equipment from one loading place to the next. In 1920 a continuous-type mining machine4/ was installed in an Illinois coal mine to drive entries. Several other companies used these entry drivers for short periods in the following few years. In 1927 a southern Illinois coal company installed 2 of these machines which, in the next 25 years, were reported to have driven over 200 miles of entries. The machines did not attain widespread usage.

The Bureau of Mines monitored surface subsidence and water level fluctuations in 10 shallow observation wells above a series of four adjacent longwall panels in southwestern Pennsylvania, for about 4 yr. This study attempted to correlate the changes in the water levels within the observation wells to the measured vertical and horizontal ground movements associated with subsidence. Results of this study indicate that the fluctuation of the water levels appears to be a function of the well location relative to the mine layout and the proximity of mining. Wells are generally unaffected by mining of a preceding panel unless they are located within the angle of draw for that panel. Wells located at the centerline of a longwall panel exhibit the greatest fluctuation and head loss. This relationship may be related to the strain developed by the advancing longwall face. The water levels in the wells monitored fell at the greatest rate when the ground surrounding the well was in tension. The rate of the decline decreased as the dynamic development of the strains was changing from tension to compression. The water levels were found to be near the premining level before the ground was subject to maximum compressive strain. Nine of the ten wells investigated recovered to their premining water level after mining was completed.

The Bureau of Mines midget impinger dust-sampling apparatus was described first in 1937.4/ Two supplementary reports5/6 were published in 1938. These reports are now out of print. The material published previously is combined in this paper to make information on this device available for distribution. The impinger was developed by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the United States Public Health Service in 1922. The underlying principle of this instruments is based on impingement land wetting, of the dust particles by drawing air through a nozzle at high velocity onto a smooth surface under a bubbling column of liquid. The dust particles are retained in the liquid. The apparatus has been used widely and permissible limits of dustiness have teen established in the United States on the basis of results obtained with this device in correlation with medical studies. However, it has been criticized for its bulk, weight, and power requirements.

In mid-1966 the Department of the Interior launched its Heavy Metals Program to stimulate domestic output of gold which is in serious short supply. The program is jointly conducted by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines.

The hazard to health from contamination of air by a noxious gas depends not only on the potential harmful response attending exposure, but also on the warning properties, which in effect may be termed the "accompanying warning response," This warning may be manifested as an odor, taste, irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat, or perhaps headache, vertigo, or nausea. These manifestations may be painful and even slightly harmful, but to a much lesser degree than the primary injury of exposure. The warning response mitigates hazards directly in proportion to the degree of Intolerability which accompanies injurious exposure, and accordingly its absence augments hazards. This accounts for the fact that the actual health hazards from a non-odorous or non-irritating gas or vapor of comparatively low toxicity sometimes equal or exceed the hazard from a considerably more toxic substance, but one which possesses a marked odor or produces eye, nose, or throat irritation in advance of harmful exposure. When a substance lacks the properties for giving warning, it is often possible to impart them by the addition of a small amount of another substance which has an exceedingly high warning intensity. The vapors of this substance, commonly termed a "warning agent" or "tracer gas," escape and mingle with the gas or vapor which lacks warning properties and thereby apprises persons of the latter&apos;s presence. The amount of the warning agent added is that which will give adequate warning in advance of serious physiological harm from the dangerous gas or vapor.

The Bell mine operated by the Warner Co. at Bellefonte, Pa., has an annual production of about 600,000 short tons of high-grade limestone. Since 1924, shrinkage stoping has been the mining method. Horizontal, long-hole diamond-drilling for production in stopes was started with one machine in July 1946. It is now standard practice. The burden on the holes is 10 feet. Diamond bits are noncoring EX-size in both concave and pilot types. The two types have little difference in drilling speed at the Bell mine. The diamond drills are mounted on 3-inch single-screw columns. Diamond drilling shows a marked increase in efficiency at the Bell mine, compared to percussion drilling, with respect to tons broken per drill shift, tons broken per foot of hole, and tons broken per pound of explosive. The advantages of diamond-drilling blast-holes also include (a) improved safety, greater footage per drill shift, (c) better frag- mentation of the broken, stone, and (d) reduction in amount of barring down required in stopes because the working places are limited to slots which have a relatively small area.

The Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Thiessen Team USA, Spokane, WA, have developed a pull claw that can be attached to any accessible friction bolt ring to test the performance (i.e., load-carrying capacity) of bolts without the use of a pull collar. This would allow true random testing of friction bolts, which need to be evaluated to determine if they are still providing an adequate level of support months or years after installation. Such support is critical to maintaining safe working conditions for underground miners.

Emphasis is placed on assessing the hazard potential, on ventilation principles, and on monitoring for gas. The chapter also emphasizes the importance of human factors in reducing explosion risk. Ensuring safe conditions is much more than just good engineering design. It also involves the every-day vigilance of those working underground. This does not imply that the engineering design can be ignored, only that the job of providing safe conditions has just begun with design. EARLY INDICATORS OF A GAS PROBLEM For the engineer planning a tunnel project, reliable early indicators of methane are scarce. How-ever, the local geology can often provide some information.2 Carbonaceous rocks and tar sands are a likely methane source. Gas is also a distinct possibility if it is known to be present else-where in the same sequence of geologic formations. Swampy areas, sewerage systems, and landfills are also candidates because the decomposition of organic materials produces methane. The gas in a tunnel can originate in the strata being excavated, or it can migrate a considerable distance from adjacent strata. Test borings at the project site can also serve as initial indicators of gas. Methane has no odor, but may be emitted along with gases that do. If gas is emitted from the borehole, a sample may be collected by inserting a tube into the hole as far as possible and pumping the gas out. The gas sample should be collected in a sampling bag or canister for later analysis by a chemical laboratory.3

"IntroductoryThe common practice of the petroleum industry is to measure viscosity by the use of instruments of the efflux or capillary tube type. The Saybolt universal viscosimeter has been tentatively adopted as a standard by the American Society for Testing Materials and is used extensively in the United States.Several instruments of foreign origin are also more or less familiar, such as the Redwood, the Engier, and the Baroey.Effina-type viscosimeters are well adapted to the ordinary needs of petroleum testing laberatories as they are simple and rugged in construction and away to manipulate, even in the hands of operators lacking scientific training. They have, however, certain limitations and for certain spacial types of work there are notable advantages incident to the use of the so-called torsion types of type of viacosimeter. The most satisfactory type of torsion viscosimeter now available in the market some to be that of MacMchael, which has been discussed in detail in a recent paper (Herschel, W. H., The MacMichael Torsional Viscosimeter. Jour. of Int. and Eng. Chem., vol. 12, 1920, pp. 282-286). The present paper indicates conditions under which this viscosimeter may be used to advantage in the petroleum laboratory, and outlines simple methods of operation and calibration."

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary reports by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ and by the Federal Geological Survey 4/ suggested that exploration would discover substantial reserves of minable ore in the Contact mine, Grant County, New Mexico. During February and March 1943, a sampling program was conducted on this property under the direction of the author. This was art of a general survey of the manganese districts of southwestern New Mexico.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as practicable soon as after its conclusion. The Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocer, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. S. Dean, assistant director. With respect to this report, special acknowledgment is due to C. H. Johnson, district engineer for New Mexico, and E. D. Gardner, regional engineer, and his staff, of the Central Region of the Bureau of Mines at the time of this work in 1943; also to Kenworthy, metallurgist at the Rolla. Mo., Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines, for work on beneficietion of the ore, and Sherman K. "The accompanying tabulation gives the results of a series of operating tests on two types of small stokers. One was an inclined, natural-draft, moving-grate, overfeed ""hand-stoker"" fired and manipulated by hand; the other was. a horizontal, forced-draft, stationary-grate, underfeed, mechanical unit-stoker operated by an electric motor. These were installed as shown by the accompanying sketches (figs. 1 and 2) under horizontal return tubular boilers of a nominal rating of 150 bl.h.p. each.The steam load carried by these boilers was a rather typical heating load. It was fairly constant and of about 30 bl.h.p. throughout the summer months, with small variation between day and night. During the winter months the daily variations were dependent upon the outside temperature. The boilers were banked a considerable part of the night.As noted in the table, two kinds of coal were used. The size of one kind was run-of-mine and the other 11/4 inch nut and clack. These coals from two different mines of the New River district both caked considerably during burning, the nut and slack more than the other. Analyses of the coal were as follows:"
