Increase the productivity of domestic mining operations by improving the performance of rock drilling systems. Approach Investigate the use of chemical solutions at zero surface charge concentrations as drilling fluid additives to enhance penetration rates and extend bit life. Background Bureau researchers have investigated the use of chemical additives to enhance drilling performance and have found that the most efficient drilling occurred when the drilling fluid was able to maintain a zero surface charge (ZSC) on the rock surface. Laboratory drilling studies using 5/8-inch diameter diamond-impregnated coring bits on rock types such as quartzite, granite, taconite, and marble. Cationic compounds were used as the surface charge neutralizing additives during these tests. The drilling studies demonstrated enhanced drilling performance, however, only at the singular additive concentration that produced the ZSC condition. Bureau researchers made a breakthrough when they found that polyethylene oxide, although a nonionic polymer, was able to maintain the ZSC condition over a wide range of concentrations. Success using polyethylene oxide as the drilling fluid additive during subsequent laboratory tests prompted testing under field conditions.

Excessive production of reactive oxygen radicals by alveolar macrophages is proposed to play an important role in oxidative lung injury. A major product of oxygen radical formation is the highly reactive hydroxyl radical (•OH) generated via a biologic Fenton reaction. In addition to its known ability to induce lipid peroxidation, recent studies have suggested that the •OH may exert its cytotoxic effect through the alteration of [Ca2+], homeostasis. To test this potential mechanism as well as to investigate the relationship between •OH and Ca" overloading in cytotoxic injury, isolated rat alveolar macrophages were exposed to externally generated radical system, H2O2 (0.01 to 1 mM) and Fe (1 mM) and their [Ca2+] levels and cell injury were monitored using quantitative fluorescence microscopy with the aid of the specific Ca" indicator, Fura-2, and membrane integrity indicator, propidium iodide. Electron spin resonance measurements using the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) confirmed the production of the .OH radical by this system. Upon the addition of the radicals, the macrophages displayed a rapid initial rise in [Ca2+] which was followed by a slower but more pronounced [Ca2+], elevation that reached a level 3 to 5 times higher than the basal level. This process preceded cell death as evident by nuclear propidium iodide fluorescence. Depletion of extracellular Ca" inhibited both the [Ca2+], response and cell injury. Preincubation of the cells with the Ca" channel blocker verapamil or .0H radical scavenger mannitol similarly inhibited the [Ca2+], rise and loss of viability. Firefly luciferase assay of cellular ATP content demonstrated that the alterations in [Ca2+], following .0H treatment preceded the depletion of ATP. Changes in membrane potential caused by Na* substitution with K* had no significant effect on either the unstimulated or stimulated [Ca"], levels. Taken together, these measurements indicate that .OH-induced injury in alveolar macrophages is associated with the alteration in [Ca2+], homeostasis. The mechanism of •OH-induced [Ca2+] loading is not due to nonspecific membrane damage or energy depletion, but mainly due to an increase in Ca2+ influx through Ca2+ selective channels. This Ca2+ over-load state as well as energy depletion caused by the oxidant may activate certain cellular degradative processes leading to cell injury and death.

"PREFACEA general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fourth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed.Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township.The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on Figure 13 in Volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes.Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area."

The effect of load rate on the load-carrying capabilities of wood cribs is investigated in this Bureau of Mines study. The modulus of deformation (stiffness) of wood crib blocks has been shown to increase with increases in rates of load application, causing larger load reactions for increases in convergence rates. Since wood cribs are tested in the laboratory at convergence rates that are orders of magnitude faster than typically would occur underground, wood cribs tested in the laboratory will react larger loads than the same cribs would react underground for the same displacement. Tests conducted in the Bureau's mine roof simulator on green wood crib blocks indicate that the increase in stiffness for increasing load rates diminishes at displacement rates beyond 0.1 in/min, making crib load nearly independent of load rate for rates faster than 0.1 in/min. Seasoned wood specimens were not as con-sistent in load-rate dependency. Some possible explanations of observed load-rate behavior on wood crib specimens are also postulated in this paper.

This Bureau of Mines study describes two processes for recovering zinc, copper, silver, and iron from the magnetic fraction of a waste generated by the primary smelting of zinc in horizontal retort distillation furnaces. The laboratory-scale procedures include reduction melting to produce a high-copper iron and matte smelting to produce a copper-silver-iron matte and metallic iron. Zinc is fumed in each process and recovered as the oxide. Direct reduction melting yields a metallic iron high in copper and a small rich matte from the sulfur contained in the waste. The products of the second process are a matte containing essentially all of the silver, about 80 pct of the copper and 37 pet of the iron, and an iron-copper alloy containing all of the remaining copper. Extraction with metallic lead or sodium sulfate recovers essentially all of the copper from the molten high-copper iron and yields an acceptable foundry iron.

There has been little change in timbering methods in anthracite mines for 75 years, and technical information on strata control is almost wholly lacking. In order to assist the industry to establish technical data, the Bureau of Mines and a Northern field operator are cooperating in underground experiments, the first phase of which has been to investigate pneumatic packing. The four principal methods of packing in mining are hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and hand. The hydraulic pa caring system is believed to have originated at Shenanodah, Pa., in 1864,4/ to prevent destruction of a church by surface subsidence after underground coal mining. This method was used again in 1884 to arrest an underground fire at Buck Ridge colliery, near Shamokin, Pa. In 1901 hydraulic packing was introduced to Europe in Upper Silesia, where it gained in popularity owing to the availability of large quantities of sand suitable for flushing .5/ Hydraulic packing has a number of disadvantages. Chief among these are the softening effect of large quantities of water on the mine floor conducive to heaving action; drainage and punning costs; and the inability to fill roof cavities completely in flat beds.

"Preliminary examination of tungsten deposits on the Mountain View property near Hyder, Alaska, was made by Neal M. Muir, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines daring the summer of 1942. Fifteen samples were cut, rough esti¬mates of ore reserves were made, and it was proposed to extend the drift on scheelite-bearing vein 300 feet in a northwesterly direction.From May 22 to October 24, 1944, an exploratory project was conducted on the property by the Bureau. In the course of this work, the camp buildings were rehabilitated; the dam, hydraulic line, and machinery were repaired; 226 feet of drift was driven; 80 groove samples aggregating 3.9 tons in weight were cut; a 6,000-foot surface and underground traverse was run; and the area was mapped in detail.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is doe Neal W. Sanford, acting chief, Alaska Division, Mining Branch, for their supervision of the field work and revision of the report.Acknowledgment is also made to Silbak Premier, Ltd., for rendering valuable assistance in the repair of equipment and for extending various courtesies to Bureau of Mines personnel during the conduct of this project.The Mountain View property is located at latitude 55° 59' north, and longitude 130° 03' west in the Salmon River mining district of southeastern Alaska, about 5 miles in a northwesterly direction from the town of Hyder, which lies at the head of Portland Canal, as shown in figures 1 and 2. Vein outcrops and surface workings are at an elevation of 950 feet and occupy the west flank of a low ridge between Skookum and Fish Creeks, as shown in figure 3. The portal of the long adit exposing the vein at depth is on Skookum Creek about 550 feet north of the confluence of Skookum and Fish Creeks.Access to the property is over a 4-foot wide trail built and maintained by the United States Forest Service. This trail is suitable for pack animals and is adequate for transportation of supplies and material for exploratory work. During the periods of camp construction and past exploratory operations a 4,000-foot, single-cable, aerial tramway, now in disrepair, served for transportation of materials and all machinery from the Salmon River Highway to the property. The cost of such hauling was high, amounting to $12 a ton. Topography is suitable for construction of a ""cat road"" 2 miles in length, connecting the property with the Salmon River Highway. It is estimated that such a road could be built for $5,000 a mile, and supplies, machinery, and concentrates could be haled over it at a cost of less than $2.50 a ton."

Thallium is one of the rarer metals that has come into commercial importance in recent years. Although the element was first reported by Crookes in seleniferous deposits in lead chambers of a sulfuric acid plant in the Harz Mountains of Germany, it had no commercial significance until about 190O because of the high cost of extraction. Thallium occurs widely in the earth's crust but is found in such low concentrations that it is recovered only as a byproduct from processing other elements. There are no domestic ores of thallium; the entire output in this country is supplied by the American Smelting & Refining Co. as a byproduct of its cadmium operations at Globe, Colo. Thallium also is recovered from the flue dusts of sulfuric acid works in which thallium-bearing materials are used and as a byproduct of the lithopone industry. This paper describes methods for recovery of thallium from 'white arsenic" and lead Cottrell-precipitator dust of the American Smelting & Refining Co., lead smelter, Murray, Utah. Owing to an enlarged market for thallium because of increased military requirements and expanded peacetime uses, the Salt Lake Station of the Bureau of Mines surveyed the occurrence of thallium in ores, concentrates, and smelter products from all parts of the nation and found the most promising source was certain smelter products of the American Smelting & Refining Co. plant, Murray, Utah. Much of the thallium was being lost in marketed arsenic products; therefore, this investigation was undertaken to develop methods for recovering the thallium.

The Old Reliable copper mine was first examined by Harlow D. Phelps , an engineer of the Bureau of Mines , in October and November 1942 , in compliance with a request from the War Production Board , which furnished copies of assay maps of the 100- and 200-foot levels and requested that they be check-sampled . The author and R. li. Grantham and W. D. Hughes , engineers of the Bureau , made a second and more detailed examination later , after a number of manways had been opened that were inaccessible when the first examination was made .

Roof bolting has been known for many years, although the practice had very limited application before 1948. Since then, bolting has been introduced as a systematic method of support in more than 700 coal mines and more than 200 noncoalmines and other underground openings in rock. By far the greatest number of bolts are used to support bedded roof. This is largely because of their use in coal mines, although roof bolts are used in mining bedded deposits of all kinds -potash (New Mexico), trona (Wyoming), and ores of iron (Alabama), lead (Missouri), uranium (Utah), lead-zinc (Utah), and copper (Michigan and Arizona). Thus, bolting has been successfully employed to reinforce bedded roof under a wide range of conditions despite the limited knowledge of the principles involved. This report develops the basic principles of bolting bedded roof based on elementary beam theory and on the results of tests intended to prove or disprove certain fundamental premises. Specifically, the objectives were to gain an understanding of the function of the bolts and the behavior of bolted roof and to establish standard bolt patterns. A combination of theoretical and experimental analysis was employed. The experimental method consisted of testing mine -roof models in a centrifuge. The models, the test procedure, and the model-prototype relations are described in a companion report (1)2/. A second companion report presents a method for designing systems of vertical bolts to reinforce bedded roof (2).

For several years the writers have been studying various phases of the effect of air conditions in metal mines upon underground workers ; in 1918 a short study was made in certain hot and deep mines and brief reports were issued in the Engineering and Mining Journal ( August , 1920) and in the U. S. Public Health Reports (Vol . 36 , No. 4 , January 28 , 1921 ) . In 1921 a more extended study was made (also in hot and deep metel mines ) with intent to determine the limiting conditions imposed upon underground workers by the physiological effect of various air movements , temperatures , and humidities , with and without work . It is the purpose to publish a series of short papers on this later investigation , each paper to consider one particular phase of the work . The present paper deals with the effect on body temperature and pulse rate in still air as compared with moving air of temperatures from 90 to 100° F . and 100 per cent relative humidity, the subjects at rest .

An important activity of the Bureau of Mines is the continual search for new sources of minerals. As a part of the investigation of strategic mineral deposits in the United States, samples of mercury ores were submitted to the Ore Dressing sections of the Salt Lake City and Albany stations for metallurgical testing. This paper gives data summarizing the results obtained from laboratory beneficiation studies of mercury ore samples submitted during the period 1941 to 1947. Ores tested included three from Jackson County, Oreg., one from Valley County, Idaho, one from Storey County, Nev., and one from Sonoma County, Calif. In general, the ores from Oregon were not amenable to concentration by flotation because of intimate association of cinnabar with other minerals or because of extremely low grade. One Oregon ore was amenable to direct distillation provided lime was added to reduce corrosion of the retort.

"The factors that determine the efficiency of reduction of iron oxides by gaseous reducing agents may be considered in two classes; those which effect the equilibrium between the reacting substances end their products, and those which affect the rete of reaction. Both sets are of prectical importance, the former as influencing the maximum possible efficiency and the latter as determining what fraction of the maximum yield may be readily or profitably obtained. In addition, the thermal changes attending the reduction greatly affect the chance of successful industrial application of any such process, and knowledge of them is necessary for the intelligent design of apparatus and control of the reaction. Some aspects of each of these three divisions of the problem are discussed below.I. The Maximum Reducing Power of Fuel Gases on the Oxides of IronsThe gases that heve been considered specifically in this work are coal gas, water gas and producer gas, typical analyses” of which are given in Table 1 Of the various hydrocarbons represented in Table 1, (several being grouped or averaged as C2R4), methane is the only gas assumed to be capable of existence at appreciable pressures under the conditions of interest here. "As the US coal industry moves into the next century, it is becoming more apparent that the effective application of new technology is the only way it can remain competitive in the energy marketplace. Examples of this emphasis are with us today in such diverse areas as face-ventilation and excavation-equipment applications. The focus of this new technology is directed toward improvements in health and safety, cost control, and productivity.Room-and-pillar mining accounts for approximately 68% of the nations underground coal production; this percentage is not expected to decrease markedly in the near future. As such, this paper analyzes the impacts of the changing technological climate on future room-mid-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to three scenarios incorporating new or emerging technology. A microcomputer-based comparative analysis will reflect the changes in section production and costs.IntroductionThe ultimate goal for any coal mining company is to effectively use its human and financial resources to maximize its profits through the extraction of its reserves. Although recent workforce reductions in the industry have resulted in a more efficient use of labor and increased productivity, there comes a point in time when further reductions in the numbers of workers in each operating section are impossible with existing equipment. For example, Farinelli and Bise (1987) found that labor cost constituted 62% - 73% of the cost per ton of coal at the mining section, with a minimum crew size. Thereafter, efforts to increase productivity must focus on more efficient mine plans and technology.The fact that an increase in productivity can be realized by reducing non-productive time (change-out and tram time) and converting it to productive time has been known and demonstrated for quite some time. What has not been demonstrated frequently is the quantification of the potential productivity increase of currently emerging technology or ""add-on"" equipment. It is one thing to be able to say that a piece of equipment will make an operation more productive, but it is another thing to be able to quantify the productivity increase that will justify the purchase of the new equipment. Not only is a financial benefit possible in room-and-pillar mining with an increase in productivity, but a decrease in the time necessary to develop a longwall panel can also occur.The purpose of this paper is an analyze the impacts of a changing technological climate on future room-and-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to several scenarios incorporating emerging technology. To do this, four cases will be developed. A base case, consisting of the typical manner in which continuous-miner sections are currently operating, is compared to three layouts incorporating: (1) flooded-bed scrubbers on radio remote-controlled continuous miners, (2)a continuous miner with side-mounted roofbolters, and (3) a continuous miner with side-mounted roofbolters used in conjunction with a continuous-haulage system."

Initially, the objective of this contract was to develop a PWSCSR that could meet proposed criteria (that were different from 30 CFR 11(Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulation part II) and that would be less than twice the size and weight of a filter self rescuer. This objective was met. Consequently, the original contract was extended to develop a PWSCSR that would meet existing CFR-30 criteria within the same size and weight constraints. This resulted in the development of a PWSCSR (the SR-100) that received NIOSH/MSHA approval (TC-239). This report presents a historical discussion of the design and development of the SR-100 as developed by CSE Corporation under Bureau of Mines contract number H0368013. The technical parameters and the test results of NIOSH/MSHA 30 CFR 11 certification are also presented.

The paramount importance of water to life of all forms on the earth is too well known to require elaboration in this brief paper. It has repeatedly been termed the most valuable of all our mineral resources. Its importance is justifiably recognized in the extensive areas covering the earth which receive sufficient rainfall to sustain a relatively luxuriant vegetation; but in those areas where rainfall is insufficient to support anything but a relatively meager plant growth, the location of a water supply and its development become of even more vital interest to those attempting to obtain a living from the soil. Geological investigations concerning the water supply of the United States have been most extensive, important work having been accomplished by Federal, State, and local governments and by private enterprise. A casual examination of the titles of the 739 Water-Supply Papers published by the United States Geological Survey3/ alone testifies 'to the vital nature of our water resources and the extensive work that has been done on them.

General Six open-pit metal mines, five copper and one molybdenum, were visited during the course of the research. Four were investigated twice, in summer and in winter, in order to determine the effects of seasonal variations In temperature and moisture upon the measured parameters, Permission to enter the fifth mine was received too late to make an examination during the summer months. The sixth mine was visited to confirm the results obtained from the other five and specifically, to observe how the project recommendations (as will be presented in this chapter) would apply to open-pit metal mines in general. Information gathered during the ten plant visits is sufficient to form an adequate data base for the report. A complete presentation of all field trip data is given in Appendix 1. Further, a detailed description of the electrical distribution and grounding practices at each mine is also contained there. Typical System. At a typical mine as shown schematically in Figure 62, one or more substations with resistance-grounded secondaries are employed to transform the incoming utility-voltage to the lower potential used by the mining machines, generally three-phase 4160 V. At this level, pit distribution is carried on overhead lines, supported by wooden poles, to supply switchhouses located in benches near the particular piece of equipment.
