A list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved prior to Jan 1, 1937, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6942 • .ll The present list inc ludes additional equipment approved during the calendar yea r 1937. All of the equipment listed represents new designs except that covered by the first item, that is, 57 under the • heading nLoading Machines and Conveyors. 11 This item covers the approval of the 500-volt design of a machine the 250-v olt design of which was approved on January 17, 1935. The system under wich these devices were tested permits the manu-. facturer., after his equipment has passed certain tests prescribed by the 'Ui"eau of Mines, to mark his equipment with a seal showing that it has been approved by the Bureau. These tests are designed to insure t hat equipments hav,e the minimum requirements for safety in use. The only object of the :Bureau in making such tests and publishing lists of permissible equipment is to help decrease the hazards of mining.

The Bureau of Mins, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating a hydrometallurgical procedure to conserve cobalt, nickel, and copper by recovering the metals from the matte byproducts of smelting Missouri lead ores. For want of adequate processing technology the mattes are now either unmarketable or marginally so. The procedure involves leaching with manganese dioxide and sulfuric acid to obtain copper, nickel, cobalt, lead, and manganese sulfates, and elemental sulfur as expressed by the following reaction: MS + MnO2 + 2H2SO4 ? MSO4 + MnS04 + S° + 2H2O, where M = Cu, Ni, Co, and Pb. The leach solutions, containing near theoretical amounts of sulfuric acid and manganese dioxide at 85° to 100° C, convert up to 98 pct of the cobalt, nickel, and copper in the mattes to sulfates in less than 2 hr. As they are formed, the cobalt, nickel, and copper sulfates are dissolved leaving a residue of lead sulfate, lead, sulfur, and gangue. The soluble metals are recovered from the leach solutions by caustic and sulfide precipitation, and the residue returned to the smelter for lead recovery. The manganese can be reclaimed from the spent leach liquor as manganese oxide and recycled to leaching.

Objective Develop a method to warn of hazardous conditions and enhance safety during operation and inspection of vertical mine shafts and hoists. Background Mine hoisting is the most critical and potentially the most dan¬gerous operation in underground mining. Many hazards are related to falls of miners and materials, ground instability, and malfunction or lack of safety devices. All have the potential to cause a cata¬strophic accident. A condition known as "slack rope" is particularly dangerous, expecially if it occurs without the operator's awareness. The most common occurrence of slack rope is in metal or nonmetal mines that have a history of ground control problems near the "haft. Approach Studies of hoist safety features and Mine Safely a and Heath Administration (MSHA) accident statistics suggests a need to measure wire rope tension, conveyance speed and position, and shaft guide misalignment. The most accurate data are obtained directly from the conveyance. Such data could warn of potentially dangerous situations during hoisting operations, as well as during inspections, maintenance, and lowering of large equipment. Figure I shows the concept for monitoring wire rope tension, conveyance position, and guide displacement. Progress to Date A conveyance-mounted system has been developed that monitors rope tension: hoist conveyance position, speed, and load; and shaft guide misalignment. A "flex-beam" load sensor mounted just above the- conveyance protects against slack and tight rope. The measurements are transmitted 60 times a second via wireless equipment from the conveyance to the hoist room. An encoder mounted on the conveyance eliminates the need to correct the position because of rope stretch. Figure 2 shows the encoder wheel and guide displacement sensors being mounted on a cage in¬spection deck. A potentiometer monitors misalignment of the shaft guides during inspections. Information about the cage or skip can be acquired by the shaft inspector using a hand-held indicator. Inspection can also he conducted remotely from a station or hoist room using the wireless link to a laptop computer. Figure 3 shows test results from a simulated slack rope condition. The methodology for describing the geochemistry of elements in a coal seam have been developed. This has been applied to the Rosebud Coal Seam, which is an economically important member of the subbituminous coals of the Fort Union Formation in Eastern Montana. The method development has involved a detailed study of two popular techniques for determining the metal geochemistry of coal, namely, whole coal analyses and coal physical fractionation. The mathematically contrived element associations (whole coal analyses technique) and the element concentration trends in the float and sink fractions (physical fractionation technique) are considered to lead to only qualitative conclusions concerning the chemical associations of the elements in coals. Additionally, the processes taking place with the coal during low temperature ashing in an oxygen plasma are experimentally investigated and shown to be of sufficeint extent that the use of such low temperature ash for deciphering element geochemistry is questionable. The method developed in this study is a chemical fractionation that involves the sequential leaching of coal with water, 0.5 N HC1, 3 N HC1, 2 N HNO3, and 48% HF. These leach solutions are shown to selectively dissolve the predominate inorganic phases, sulfates, Ca and Mg carbonates, Fe sulfides and K alumino-silicates and quartz, respectively. These phases were identified with the use of XRD, SEM, EM and leaches (water and 0.3 N HC1) of whole coal and low temperature ash. The incorporation of the anion-exchange step in the leaching scheme was investigated and was observed to warrant further study of such intensity to be, at the time, unuseable. The use of this sequential leaching technique on several coal samples from the same seam generates element concentration trends that can be quantitatively interpreted with respect to the chemical associations of the minor and trace metals in the coal seam. The properties of the various seams of economic importance in the Fort Union Formation in Eastern Montana are compiled and presented. The subsequent conclusion is that there is not a large variation in the properties of these coal seams and that the variations within the Rosebud are within one order of magnitude. The chemical fractionation technique, investigated in this study, was applied to composite tipple samples of the Rosebud seam. Each composite sample represented 76,800 tons of coal. A minimum of 32% of the Ca and Mg are present as separate water soluble sulfates. An excess of the sulfate ion in the water extracts shows the predominating influence of the ion exchange capacity of the organic compounds in the coal. Based upon the CO content of the coal and the HC1 leachate data, 25 to 30% of the alkaline earth elements exist as separate carbonates and the remainder are associated with the organic compounds. The small fraction of the illite that dissolves in the HC1 and HNO3 leachates accounts for the K and Al. Slight dissolution of the pyrite in the HCl solvent occurs, the small amounts of Li and As do not relate to any known phase and Mn is present as a separate carbonate phase. Fe and a significant amount of the As exist in the pyrite that is dissolved in the HNO. Se is equally partitioned between the pyrite and the organic compound~. Most of the trace elements are found in the HF solutions. Li, V, and Cr were interpreted to be associated with the clay minerals (kaolinite and illite). Ni and Pb appear to be present as separate phases and 50% of the Hg is HF soluble but is not chemically related to any known inorganic phase.

A survey of the petroleum pipe lines by the Bureau of Mines as of May 1, 1923, shows that on that date there was a total of slightly more than 90,000 miles of pipe lines in the United States, having a capacity of approximately 15,750,000 barrels, which is equivalent to one-fourth of the nation's average production for one month. These lines varied in diameter from 2 to 16 inches, the weighted average being 6 inches. The total pipe-line milenge was about equally divided between trunk lines and gathering lines, though the capacity of the former was about four times that of the latter. This was due, of course, to the difference in average diameter, that for the former being 7.4 inches as compared with 3.7 inches for the latter. The common size for trunk lines was 8 inches, and for gathering lines 2 inches. Oklahora, with 19,180 miles of pipe lines, is the leading State in total mileage, with Texas second and Pennsylvania third. From point of trunk lines alone Texas is considerably ahead of any of the other States, a position which it owes to its size and to the growth in the rovement to its Gulf ports. Cali- fornia, though the leading State from point of production, ranks only seventh in pipe-line mileage. This is due to the fortunate location of the Los Angeles Basin fields, some of which are within sight of the refineries to which their oil is delivered or of the port of San Pedro through which their oil is shipped. The last survey of this nature, made in the spring of 1924 by the U. S. Geological Survey, recorded a total mileage of nearly 83,000 with a capacity of approximately 14,450,000 barrels. This indicates an increase of 9 per cent in both mileage and capacity during the two years.

"INTRODUCTIONEpidemiologic studies of workers in chromate-ore related industries, 1-3 and stainless steel welding and related occupations4 have shown that they have about 20-40 times higher risk of throat or respiratory track cancer than controls. Although the actual carcinogenic substances were not identified in these statistical studies, Cr(VI) compounds (for example, calcium chromate, zinc chromate, and lead chromate) were implicated as the causative agents, whereas Cr(III) compounds were not suspected as carcinogens. s These suggestions were supporte4 by laboratory studies wherein many Cr(VI) compounds produced sarcomas at the implant or injection sites.1,5 Squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas closely resembling human lung cancer were induced by intrabronchial implants of calcium chromate in rats, 6·7 whereas Cr(DI) oxide and Cr(lll) sulfate did not induce any tumor formation.6,7While the mechanism of the chromate-induced carcinogenicity is not fully understood, it is generally thought8 that it involves some damage to DNA. Specifically, it has been reported that: a) the chromate ion, henceforth referred to as chromate, can pass through the cell membrane and enter the cell while CR(DI) does not, 9 b) chromate does not interact with either native or denatured DNA 10 while Cr(III) does, 11 and c) the final Cr-DNA complex isolated from cellular reactions of chromate is Cr(III)-DNA, with Cr(III) binding to the phosphate groups.12,13 Thus the important question is: since Cr(DI) cannot pass through the membranes, how does Cr(III)-DNA complex form? For this to happen, Cr(VI) must be reduced to its lower oxidation states, 14 ultimately to Cr(III), by some reductants in the cellular environment. Unless this reduction occurs, the DNA would not be damaged and therefore no chromate carcinogenicity would ensue. Thus the reduction of chromate to its lower oxidation states seems to be a key step in the chromate carcinogenicity .1s One of the major reductants in cellular environments is thought to be glutathione (GSH), both outside and inside the cells.16-lB Some evidence for the role of GSH in the chromate toxicity was provided by recent studies showing that exposure of hamster cells to non-toxic levels of added selemite increases the levels of GSH as well as the Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand breaks,19 and that such DNA strand breaks in hepatocytes also change in direct proportion to the GSH content. 20,21 These observations were interpreted as implying that the reduction of chromate by GSH to some reactive intennediate is an important step in the chromate carcinogenicity. 20.21 In · the present undenaking22 we have used electron spin resonance (ESR) and spin-trap methodology to investigate the reduction of chromate by GSH and find evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl radical (GS ·) as well as Cr(V)-intermediates."

Over a recent 20-month observation period, the U.S. Bureau of Mines obtained seismogram records from a single vertical-component, short-period seismometer installed at the surface of a metal mine in northern Idaho. The seismic events were analyzed for local (Richter) magnitude (M), time of occurrence, location, and relation to rock bursting and production blasting. Approximately 150 seismic events with -0.5 = M = 2.9 were located within the mine, yielding a b value (slope of the logarithm of the number of events with magnitude greater than M versus M) of 0.5. Event locations were constrained using a dense underground array of high-frequency accelerometers. Twenty of the surface-recorded events, with 0.5 = M = 2.9, were associated with rock bursts that produced damage requiring at least 1/2 day of cleanup and/or repair. Other possibly hazardous rock bursts, with magnitudes as small as -1.1, were numerous but were not associated with significant structural damage. Approximately 60 pct of the seismic events with M > -0.5 and 75 pct of damaging rock bursts occurred within 45 min of blasting. Estimates of characteristic rupture dimensions for rock bursts with -1.1 = M = 2.9, based on a conventional dislocation shear-slip model of failure, range from 3 to 300 m.

Traditionally, fine coal is more troublesome than the coarser sizes at every step of the coal-preparation process--screening, cleaning, dewatering, and drying. Therefore the present trend toward a higher proportion of fines in the run-of-mine product, brought about by changes in mining practice necessitated to increase productivity, has added greatly to the task of preparing coal for the market. One of the more difficult and costly problems involved is that of recovering fine solids from the washery water. These fine solids should be recovered in the interest of conservation, and they must be removed to provide recirculating water of proper quality. If there is a plant effluent, it must meet increasingly stringent requirements against stream pollution. Vacuum filtration has been used for years at a few plants to recover the extreme fines, but its additional cost discouraged general adoption until recently. Now, with growing emphasis on better solids recovery, filtration is becoming more widespread. Many coal slurries filter readily, giving high cake rates and clean filtrates. Others, however, particularly those containing either a high proportion of material finer than 200-mesh or an appreciable amount of clay, are much more difficult to filter. Many of these refractory slurries can be rendered more filterable by flocculation. A previous report of Bureau of Mines research dealing with flocculation alone was published in 1940.5/

In leaching copper ores knowledge of the rate of dissolution of the copper minerals and of the impurities is desirable. With knowledge of these two factors and data as to what minerals are present in the ore the metallurgist has an excellent start on planning a leaching cycle to fit that ore. The rate of dissolution is rather difficult to predict, and the time required to leach a given ore may differ markedly from that required by another ore. The whole study as related to mixed oxidized and sulphide ores is one of relative rates of dissolution of the different copper minerals and the impurities in sulphuric aoid and in ferric sulphate. The aim of leaching is to choose a cycle and strength of solvents to extract a maximum amount of copper and a minimum of impurities. The consumption of reagents per unit of copper dissolved is a function of the strength of the reagents used and the relative rates of attack on copper minerals and impurities. An opportunity may exist of obtaining the kind of electrolyte wanted for electrolytic precipitation and yet of saving on the consumption of reagents by modifying the strength of ferric sulphate and of sulphuric acid during the cycle to fit the time needed for dissolving the sulphide and oxidized minerals present.

The present paper considers the rate of dissolution of copper from ores of the Southwest in sulphuric acid of varying strength and the ratio of sulphuric acid consumed to copper dis¬solved. In this study two ores containing the copper principally in an oxidized condition were used. A study of other ores, especially those containing high percentages of sulphide copper minerals, would be desirable, but since consumption of acid has paramount interest,

Electrolysis of titanium carbide and a material consisting of titanium, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen as soluble anodes in Used electrolytes was investigated by the Bureau of Mines for the preparation of crude titanium metal. Tests made in all-chloride electrolytes showed only a low recovery of titanium as well as a substantial volatilization of titanium trichloride (TiC13) when present in the electrolyte. Electrolysis at 750° to 850° C in a mixture containing 85 percent NaC1-15 percent potassium floutitanate (K2TiF6) yielded as high as 91 percent recovery of titanium from titanium carbide and 62 percent recovery of titanium from the titanium-carbon-nitrogen-oxygen material. Problems associated with the preparation of crude metal by fused-salt electrolysis are discussed. The crude metals produced from both anode materials were electrorefined in a sodium chloride-titanium chloride (NaCl-TiC12) electrolyte, and ductile titanium metal was obtained.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a method for separating minerals at magnetic susceptibilities within the diamagnetic susceptibility range. The maximum feed rate varies directly with the square root of the lower limit of permissible susceptibility, while the lower limit of permissible susceptibility varies inversely as the square of the magnetic field strength. Minerals may be separated at particle sizes smaller than possible on conventional dry-type magnetic separators.

The conversion of dilute sulfur dioxide gas into sulfuric acid by autoxidation in mechanical cells of the flotation or gas absorber types was investigated. Bench-scale tests were made with sulfur dioxide-air mixtures to determine the influence of several factors on autoxidation of sulfur dioxide, using iron and manganese salts as catalysts. The laboratory investigation subsequently was extended to pilot plant acid-making tests, using a modified turbomixer gas absorber having a 12-inch-diameter impeller. Sulfur dioxide gas was produced for the tests by roasting pyrite in a fluidized-bed reactor. In the better tests, made with manganese sulfate as the catalyst, the equivalent of 1,000 pounds of anhydrous H2SO4 was produced per 24 hours as a 10-percent solution; power consumption was 0.2 kwhr per pound of equivalent anhydrous acid synthesized. The batch and continuous tests demonstrated the technical feasibility of producing dilute sulfuric acid by autoxidation of sulfur dioxide gas in mechanical cells when converting pyrite roaster or waste smelter gases.

This report describes a method for treating pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) data obtained with a Burnett compressibility apparatus. The method makes use of a general nonlinear least-squares technique developed at the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center. It is assumed that an adequate functional form is available for the expression of the compressibility factor as a function of either the molal density or the pressure. The functional form of the compressibility factor can be either linear or nonlinear in the parameters to be evaluated. Formulas are given for calculating variances and covariances of all parameters evaluated and for calculating the variance of calculated quantities of interest.

[The Harrington-Hickory mine in the Star raining district, Beaver County, Utah, has produced approximately 20,000 tons of lead-zinc-silver ores since 1910. Production previous to 1910 is not known. The mine is owned by the New Majestic Mining Co. The property was rehabilitated and operated by James D. Williams under a 10-year lease with option to purchase from April 1943 to May 1949, Loans from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation in the aggregate of $41,000 wore used in construction of an access road, rehabilitation of the mine, and purchase of equipment for full-scale operation. The improved, all-weather access road extends from loading ramps on the Union Pacific Railroad at Milord to the urine storage bins 5 miles west o f town. The mine is serviced electrically by a. 5,000-volt line owned by Telluride Power Co. Mine transformers step the voltage down to 440/220/110 for surface and underground service.]

Since December 10, 1945, the Mount Weather Branch, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines, has been maintaining detailed performance and cost records on the diamond coring bits used throughout the United States by the Bureau of Mince. Figure 1 is a copy of a typical master record sheet showing the scope and type of information recorded for each bit. It is the intention of the Bureau of Mines to issue analytical reports covering the effects of diamond size and quality on the cost of core drilling in different rocks as the information on a significant number of bits used in any one type of rock is accumulated. This report is the first of such a proposed series and is based on the diamond loss and bit costs incurred in the use of 539 AX bits in coring operations on 10 different projects involving 6,097 feet of drilling in gneiss. The 10 projects were located in New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey (fig. 2). As a result of the information accumulated on the use of diamond-coring bits in drilling in gneiss, it has been found that the type of bit, the matrix, the percent of core recovered, and the size and quality of diamonds used have a definite effect on the cost of bits per foot drilled.

The purpose of the research described in this report was to develop techniques for using ilmenite from domestic deposits for the production of titanium tetrachloride. The research was done by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the General Services Administration under contract DMP-116, Utilization of Domestic Ilmenite. Bench-scale continuous chlorination of an Idaho ilmenite containing 27.9 percent titanium and 35.6 percent iron yielded a crude titanium tetrachloride suitable for purification and for the production of titanium metal and pigment. A summary of the results of 380 hours of operation showed that 82.4 percent of the titanium was chlorinated, with 92.5 percent utilization of chlorine. The construction- of a. quartz tube chlorinator 4-inches in diameter and 24 inches long is described with the necessary details of operation.

Electrorefined vanadium with additions of up to 5 percent by weight of yttrium, cerium , lanthanum , praseodymium, neodymium, and samarium was melted to ingots in a nonconsumable electrode arc in a helium atmosphere . The ingots were rolled into strips and evaluated for the effect of the alloying elements on hardness , tensile strength , ductility , recrystallization temperature , and microstructure . Except for samarium , average additions of alloying elements of 1 to 2 weight - percent resulted in the retention of 0.12 to 1.05 weight - percent in the alloys and reduced the ultimate tensile strength from about 48,000 to approximately 30,600 psi . The corresponding yield stress (0.2 percent offset ) was reduced from about 40,700 to approximately 20 , 200 psi . Diamond pyramid hardness (DPH) was reduced from 117 to an average of 62 kg /mm² . Increased malleability at room temperature resulted with yttrium and all rare - earth- metal additions , except samarium , particularly with more than 0.25 weight - percent additions . Decreasing oxygen contents corresponded with the changes noted in the mechanical properties of the alloys . The recrystallization temperature of electrorefined vanadium was reduced from approximately 950 ° to 800 ° C. Yttrium or a rare- earth metal content , except samarium , in excess of 0.1 weight - percent in vanadium produced a second phase suggestive of an eutectic which indicated a possible maximum solubility of less than 0.1 weight - percent for both room and elevated temperatures .
