This paper is the fourth of a series of preliminary papers on smelting in the lead blast furnace.4 The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace by direct experimentation and to correlate these conditions with operating factors, furnace behavior, and metallurgical losses. The explosion hazard of methane-air mixtures has become an increasingly serious mine planning problem, and an advance assessment of methane gas potential can therefore be essential for a safe and economic mine development pro- gram. As part of its coal mine health and safety program, the Bureau of Mines has developed a simple, inexpensive test to measure the methane content of coal samples obtained from exploration cores. The gas content of coal per unit weight as determined by the direct method test can be used as a basis for a preliminary estimate of mine ventilation requirements, and to determine if degasification of the coalbed in advance of mining should be considered. Since the Bureau began measuring the gas content of coal samples in 1972, experience has led to equipment and procedural changes, the most significant of which has been the development of a ball mill for crushing the coal sample to release the residual gas at the end of the desorption test period. This revised procedure replaces the crushing box and graphical methods described in earlier Bureau publications. The results of 583 direct method tests are summarized in tabular form. These results include data on the gas content of 125 coalbeds in 15 States.

The Department of the Interior has recently investigated the atmospheric conditions in tunnels of the Union Pacific Railroad in Utah and Wyoming , by observations made from the cabs of freight locomotives . This work was conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the request of , and in cooperation with , the Union Pacific Railroad Co .. and was brought about by several accidents to members of engine crews while passing through tunnels , from pollution of the tunnel air by exhaust gases from freight locomotives . The object was to determine the cause of gassing accidents , by examining into composition of the air in locomotive cabs while passing through railroad turmels ; to learn the effect of these conditions on the engine crew; and to provide a means of protection for the men so exposed . Gas samples and temperature readings taken in the cabs of locomotives were used in studying the atmospheric conditions to which the locomotive crews were exposed . The symptoms and the physiologica effects produced in men exposed to the atmospheres encountered were studied . The pulse rates and body temperatures were taken , and the determinations of the carbon monoxide content of the blood were made . Various methods for the prevention of gassing and for the protection of men therefrom were considered and tested , among which were the use of mechanical devices for deflecting the smoke away from the engine cab, and the use of various types of gas masks and breathing apparatus . While this investigation is a part of the safety work of the Bureau of Mines in connection with hazards from atmospheres containing carbon monoxide ( CO ) , the results are of particular value to railroads operating steam locomotives through tunnels , and are also valuable to other industries where atmospheres having poisonous gases or of a high temperature and humidity may be present . No mines are active in the Hunter Mountain Wilderness Study Area (WSA), and no mineral resources have been identified in the WSA. However, the Monarch Mine has low potential for silver, copper, tungsten, and gold resources in quartz veins; the Shirley Ann Group and Sal Group have moderate and low potential, respectively, for silver, lead, and copper resources in skarn; claims overlying the Eureka Quartzite have low potential for silica resources; and the Tourmaline N1-4 Prospect has low potential for tourmaline resources in quartz monzonite. Copper, lead, silver, tungsten, molybdenum, wollastonite and garnet occur in skarn zones between monzonitic and carbonate units. Silver, tungsten, and copper also occur in quartz veins within monzonite. Known metallic mineral deposits are small, erratic and discontinuous. The J. 0. Mine, adjacent to the northeast corner of the WSA, may contain as much as 26 million tons of subeconomic wollastonite resources. The crest of an open pit to produce that resource would extend into the WSA. No information exists on geothermal potential because no exploration has been done in the area. No occurrences of energy minerals are known within the WSA.

In 2006, a total of 280 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.9% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.8% (n=131) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were copper ore (n=34; 12.1%), and iron ore (n=33; 11.8%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=53; 18.9%), followed by Alaska (n=31; 11.1%).

THIS PAPER gives results of an investigation of the composition and carbonizing properties of coals from the Beckley bed, Caretta No. 5 mine, Susanna, McDowell County, and Glen Rogers No. 2 mine, Glen Rogers, Wyoming County, W. Va. The investigation included BM-AGA carbonization tests at. 800° and 900° C. and various chemical and physical tests designed to evaluate agglutinating, plastic, and expanding properties of coal. Both coals were of low-volatile bituminous rank, and each was blended with 70 and 80 percent high-volatile A coal from the Pittsburgh bed, Warden mine, Allegheny County, Pa. The Beckley bed was 39 to 58 inches thick at three points in the Caretta No. 5 mine, and the coal was 39 to 49 inches thick. The carbonizing sample contained 83.0 percent fixed carbon on the dry, mineral-matter-free basis. It contained 3.1 percent moisture, 15.8 percent volatile matter, 72.4 percent fixed carbon, 0.7 percent sulfur, and 8.7 percent ash, as carbonized. The ash softened at 2,680° F. The free-swelling index was 7;i, and the agglutinating value was 7.7. This sample fused weakly in the Gieseler plastometer; its blends with 70 and 80 percent Pittsburgh coal attained maximum fluidities of 830 and 600 dial divisions per minute, respectively. The single coal yielded 83.0 percent coke at 900° C. Yields of other carbonization products per ton of coal at 900° C. were: Gas, 9,950 cubic feet; tar, 3.5 gallons; light oil, 1.36 gallons; and ammonium sulfate, 16.3 pounds. Blending with Pittsburgh coal lowered the yield of coke and raised the yields of other products significantly. Caretta coal yielded strong, blocky coke at 900° C., 89 percent of which was plus-2-inch size. Strength indexes of 900° C. coke from 30:70 blends of Caretta No. 5 and Pittsburgh and of Pocahontas No. 3 and Pittsburgh coals were, respectively: 2-inch shatter, 68 and 53; 1%-inch shatter, 90 and 85; 1-inch tumbler, 50 and 53; and %-inch tumbler, 62 and 65. The specific gravity of the 900° C. gas from Caretta No. 5 coal was 0.272, and the heating values were 491 B. t. u. per cubic foot and 2,440 B. t. u. per pound of coal. The blends yielded much richer gas. Yields of tar acids and bases (0.09 and 0.04 gallon per ton, respectively) were within the normal ranges for low-volatile coals. Caretta No. 5 coal expanded 7.5 percent in the sole-heated oven at a charge density of 55.5 pounds per cubic foot. The blends containing 70 and 80 percent Pittsburgh coal contracted 4.8 and 7.5 percent, respectively.

"The various districts in the United States where complex lead-zinc ores occur are too well known to require description, there being hardly a mining State with any large amount of ores of either metal that is free from this problem. This paper briefly presents developments in the volatilization process, as applied to the treatment of such ores, since the data in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 211** were published. In that bulletin, among the many types of ore treated, examples are given of the treatment of lead-zinc ores by the chloride volatilization process for the separation of lead. An outline of the general process, with views of the rotary kiln, ore feeder, firing system (these three features resemble closely those of cement-kiln practice), dust chambers, and a Cottrell precipitator to remove the fume from the gas, are also shown in that bulletin, to which the reader is referred for the results obtained, and for practical details of operation. The small initial cost of a volatilization plant, and its adaptability for use in isolated districts were emphasized.In general, it was found that when an intensely oxidizing atmosphere was maintained in the furnace, a good lead-zinc separation could be made. Therefore, a heavy sulphide ore would have to be preroasted, and enough air would have to be admitted to obtain complete combustion of whatever fuel might be used.The work done by private companies and the bureau since the data for Bulletin 211 were obtained, indicates that the ores most immediately amenable to treatment by volatilization are of two types. The first is an oxidzed lead. silrer ore whose variable lime content makes it impractical to chloridize the ore for acidulated brine leaching, and whose base metal content makes treatment by cyanidattion unfeasible, The second type is the lead-zinc ore mentioned above, and is the one on which data are available for publication at present. This article Chows what ores of this latter type are amenable to treatment by volatilization, by giving briefly some of the more important physical and chemical properties an ore should preferably possess. Several examples are given from both laboratory experimental work, and from practice in the field, showing various phases of the volatilization process."

The modified in-situ process is one of the methods being considered for extracting oil from oil shale. One of the questions to be answered for this approach is the environmental consequence of underground retort abandonment. This report outlines a study which addresses the question in terms of a grouting solution. It covers the development of a spent shale ash based grout which will fulfill the environmental requirements in terms of strength, stability, and impermeability. In addition, it will allow the reinjection of up to 50 percent of material mined and surface retorted as part of this process.

Four short-term studies of practical ignition problems were undertaken and completed during the course of the Bureau of Mines project "Development of Specifications for Intrinsically Safe Equipment." Conclusions were as follows: (1) the most easily ignitible mixture of propane-air in a PTB break flash apparatus is approximately 5.2 percent propane; (2) miniature lamp bulbs to be used in intrinsically safe circuits are about as incendive to coal dust-air as to methane-air and should be tested in gas mixtures containing about 7.0 to 7.5 percent methane; (3) the sodium amalgam contained in high-pressure sodium lamps does not present an ignition hazard for coal dust or methane, where the lamps contain no more than 30 milligrams of amal-gam; (4) the maximum allowable surface temperature of permissible electrical enclosures should remain at 150° C despite efforts by industry groups to raise the value to 200° C.

This Bureau of Mines publication reviews U.S. helium resources as of January 1, 1973. These resources, estimated to be 693.7 billion cubic feet, are broken down into four classifications, as follows: helium in storage, 34.9 billion cubic feet; helium in measured helium-rich natural gas reserves, 119.5 billion cubic feet; helium in measured helium-lean natural gas reserves, 62.8 billion cubic feet; and helium in indicated or undiscovered natural gas resources, 476.5 billion cubic feet. The helium in undiscovered natural gas is considered a national resource; however, this gas may not be discovered depending on many factors beyond the scope of this paper, and most of the helium in natural gas will be dissipated as the gas is consumed for fuel and other purposes.

Approximately 6,000 coal mines are operated in the United States. All of them have in some degree the elements that are likely to contribute to an explosion, hence it is surprising that explosion disasters are not more frequent and that many mines have been operated for years and finally worked out and abandoned without experiencing an explosion. The absence of coal-mine explosions does not always indicate that effective efforts have been made to prevent them but rather that the nine has been fortunate in that the combination of circumstances necessary to cause an explosion has not existed. In view of present knowledge of the methods of preventing explosions, disasters are inexcusable and discredit the mining industry. The methods of preventing mine explosions are known to experienced, well-informed persons engaged in coal mining, yet despite this knowledge far to many coal-mine operators continue to use practices and methods that they should know have resulted in numerous explosions. Moreover, many mine workers persist in following past procedure irrespective of consequences and in breaking safety rules or indulging in practices almost certain eventually to result in disaster. Continued failure to apply known common-sense methods of accident and explosion prevention unquestionably will cell for ultimate enforcement of law.

The year 1937 was signalized by increased employment in the metal-and nonmetal-mining 4 industry of the United States. Measured by the number of men working, there was a 17-percent gain in employment compared with 1936. In total number of man-hours worked at all mines, the gain was slightly over 18 percent. Hazards connected with mining resulted in more accidents to the workers than in 1936, but the increase in number of accidents caused only a slight rise in the accident rate because of the much larger increase in the number of man-hours worked. In fact, the fatality rate per million man-hours of exposure was lower in 1937 than in 1936, but the rate for nonfatal injuries increased slightly.

In 2006, a total of 2,113 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Coal mines comprised 14.2% of all mining operations. ? Bituminous mines comprised 92.5% (n=1,955) and anthracite mines 7.5% (n=158) of coal mining operations. ? Approximately 71.0% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (29.2%), West Virginia (21.8%), and Pennsylvania (20.3%).

The Bureau of Mines investigated separating HF from HF-SiF4-H2O mixtures by passing the mixed gases through a sodium fluoride slurry in an airlift scrubber and forming a mixed precipitate of NaHF2 and Na2SiF6. The oven-dried precipitate was thermally dissociated in two stages. The first stage was carried out at 400° C and dissociated NaHF2 to NaF and HF. Condensation and analysis of the evolved HF proved it to be 97 to 99 weight-percent HF containing 0.79 to 0.99 weight-percent H2O and 10 to 93 ppm silicon. The second stage was carried out at 700° C and dissociated Na2SiF6 to NaF (for recycle) and SiF4. The quantity of HF recovered from gaseous HF-H2O-air mixtures decreased with increasing relative H2O concentrations. Air was beneficial when scrubbing extremely dilute wet HF gases. At HF partial pressures of 0.24 and 0.013 mm Hg in the scrubber entrance gases, HF partial pressures of 6.2 x 10-4 and 9 x 10-6 mm Hg were obtained, respectively, in the scrubber exit gases. Scrubber efficiencies were 99.7 and 99.3 percent.

The amenability of titaniferous slags and domestic mineral concentrates to chlorination was determined in a 6 - inch diameter fluidized bed chlorinator . Ilmenites from Valley County , Idaho ; Aiken , S.C ,; Trail Ridge , Fla .; and MacIntyre , N.Y .; and a titaniferous magnetite from Iron Mountain , Wyo . , were used in preparing the slags . The domestic minerals tested were an ilmenite concentrate from Valley County , Idaho , and a rutile concentrate from Magnet Cove , Ark . A high - grade Australian rutile was used as a standard for comparison . The impurity content of the slags and minerals tested , which was the most critical factor affecting their performance , was dependent on the geographical source of the material . All of the materials tested were amenable to chlorination in a fluidized bed although some required special operating conditions . Titanium extractions and chlorine utilization were over 90 percent for most of the slags and the Australian rutile . The Valley County , Idaho , ilmenite performed well in the reactor despite its 34 percent iron content .

In a Bureau of Mines investigation of the dynamic compaction of mine hydraulic backfills, two basic forms of mechanical vibration inducers were used and compared for effectiveness of compaction. Internal compaction, using concrete probe vibrators of various sizes, and external compaction, using plate vibrators} were studied and evaluated for use in underground stopes. An aluminum plate, which was light and displaced sufficient volume to remain afloat in fluid fill, and a steel plate were both used in the external compaction tests. Efficiency of compaction was better in studies conducted with internal probe vibrators. Tests were conducted in an underground backfilled stope with three different-sized probe vibrators (2-, 4-, and 6-inch-diameter) to determine an approximate area of influence. Results showed the areas of influence to be approximately 3, 4, and 5 feet in diameter, respectively, for the three different probes. Physical properties of hydraulic slurries were determined; preferred grain-size distributions, water exudation properties, and water contents of hydraulic slurries are reported. The best compaction results were obtained with moderately well-graded, fully saturated backfills, with slow rates of water exudation, which were capable of remaining in a semifluid state during the compaction process.

In 1988, the aggregate value of total world international export trade in mineral commodities was estimated at nearly $542 billion in current (1988) dollars, which was about 8.6% above the 1987 level, but still 23.7% below the record high set in 1980. Comparable comprehensive data for 1989 were not available in time for inclusion in this chapter, but 1989 returns for developed market economy countries only were 1 1.8% above those for 1988. These countries accounted for about 50% of the total mineral commodity export trade in 1988. It would be unsound to utilize the overall 11.8% growth rate for mineral commodity export trade for these countries to extrapolate the growth in total world mineral commodity trade because these developed market economy countries account for substantially different shares of the five major mineral commodity groups listed in table 2. Specifically, developed market economy countries in 1988 accounted for 56% of world export of ore, concentrate, and scrap, 74.7% of world exports of iron and steel, 71.7% of world exports of nonferrous metals, and 57.8% of all exports of crude nonmetals, but only 26.6% of world exports of mineral fuels. Moreover, even within each of these groups, the actual product mix included in developed market economy country aggregates differ from that in developing market economy country aggregates and in centrally planned economy country aggregates. Nonetheless, an increase of 9% to 12% in the value of world mineral commodity export trade seems indicated by available returns.

This paper on mining practice at the Fresnillo silver mines is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of North America. Two classes of ore are produced at Fresnillo. A low-grade oxidized silver ore; end a complex-base sulphide are containing gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper. This paper is confined to a discussion of operations relating to the production of oxidized silver ores. To date, more than 10 Million tons of this ore rave been mined. The present (June, 1931) daily production is 2,000 tons of ore, and approximately 600 men are employed in the mining operations.

A study was made by the Bureau of Mines of the penetration of selected granular materials in an unconfined state by wedge-shaped tools having dimensions comparable with the dimensions of the particles composing the materials. The output force for larger particles fluctuated radically. A custom-designed integrator was used to obtain work as a function of depth of penetration in the form of smooth curves. The influence of wedge angle, depth of penetration, penetration rate, entry angle, compaction state, and particle size on the force required and the work performed was ascertained. Empirical equations describing force and work as a function of penetration were obtained for each set of experiments.
