THE present article makes no claim to be exhaustive, since it cannot contain all the knowledge which scientists and manufacturers of the compounds of the rare earths have gained. The following notes are, therefore, simply an attempt to ascertain andclearly record the occurrence, properties, and uses of the more important of the rare earths, with a special reference to their commercial values and the industries based upon them.HISTORYIt was the mine manager, Gcyer, of Stockholm, who, in 1788, first drew attention to a black mineral which had been found in a quarry near Roslagen, in Sweden. In 1805 Klapproth received some specimens of this mineral, which he declared to be a newmineral. Subsequently Gadolin, professor of chemistry at Abo, analyzed the same mineral, and determined the presence of an unknown earth resembling alumina and lime. He named the mineral ytterbite, and afterwards gadolinite. Klapproth has alsothe merit of having detected (1804) another rare earth, which he named ochroit-earth, found in the Bastnas mine, near Riddarhyttan, in Wcstmannland, Sweden. A study of the swelling behaviour of a single batch of high-grade iron ore pellets during hydrogen reduction in a fixed bed showed that the extent of swelling is governed by the nucleation and growth of crystalline iron protuberances from the wüstite grains. Over the reduction temperature range 650 to 1000°C, it was found that substantial degrees of swelling can occur at temperatures in excess of 850°C, and significant variations in the swelling behaviour of individual pellets from different bed levels are observed under these conditions.The results are discussed in terms of a recent swelling theory and shown to be in general agreement.

Newcrest Mining Limited (NML) owns and manages the Ridgeway Gold Mine (RGM) located outside Orange in the state of New South Wales. RGM is a new underground sublevel caving (SLC) operation that is ramping up production to 4 Mtpa. The success of the SLC method at RGM is strongly influenced by production drill and blast practices. Distinguishing features of the Ridgeway SLC operation include choke blasting against broken rock, drawpoint brow preservation, loading of blastholes with different in-hole bulk emulsion densities, precharging of production rings and routine drawpoint fragmentation assessment. These areas are described in the context of RGMÆs required blasting objectives, production drilling and charging activities and innovative practices.

Mill filling is an important operational parameter in a SAG mill circuit and by its control and optimisation it can produce significant improvements in production capacity and energy efficiency. However, it is industry practice to report mill load as the total output given by load cells, or kPa for systems based on lubrication bearing back pressure, rather than the actual percent total mill filling.Ball trajectory is another critical parameter as overthrow can result in accelerated liner wear and possibly liner failure whilst underthrow can result in reduced grinding action. The assessment of ball trajectory cannot be done in isolation as the toe of the charge needs to be determined to make any meaningful assessment. Thus both total percent mill filling and mill trajectory are critical parameters; however neither is reported or available to metallurgy or processing teams in real time or a regular basis.In this study the performance of a fixed speed SAG mill was assessed and optimised by employing mill trajectory models and using the JKMRC power model to calculate percent total mill filling. Power Curves, which correlate ball filling, mill filling and mill power, were also developed. Many different approaches have been used in the past to characterise iron ore sinter mineralogy to predict sinter quality and elucidate the impacts of iron ore characteristics and process variables on the mechanisms of sintering. Characterisation techniques include optical image analysis and point counting, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Each technique has its advantages and disadvantages depending on the objectives of the measurement. It is generally acknowledged that silicoferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) is very important to the quality of the sinter produced; however, strict definitions of the phases and textures of SFCA are not generally agreed. This paper summarises the state-of-the-art in sinter characterisation applied in Australia by both academics and industrial researchers. The Resource Management Act 1991 provides for activities to be classified as permitted, controlled, restricted discretionary, discretionary, non-complying or prohibited in district and regional plans. This paper looks at the use of the prohibited activity status to restrict, in particular, mining. Often the use of prohibited activity status for mining appears to have no basis other than the negative perceptions that the local community and/or the planner drafting the plan has toward mining and quarrying.   The paper will address the current appeal regarding the use of prohibited activity status now before the Court of Appeal, and the history to the litigation. The relevance of the outcome of the appeal to the minerals sector will also be explained.

A brief review is given of the history of the Colliery to date together with the reasons for the development of an additional seam.Investigations into the quality of the coal ami its suitability for the production of metallurgical coke and determination of the economic mining limits and coal reserves are discussed. The commencement of mining operations and the inter-seamarrangements necessary for the disposal of coal won are described with the stages in the opening out of the seam itself and the reasons for the installation of a 48-in. trunk conveyor belt. Choke and manning of face equipment are considered and also the work of secondary development and pillar extraction.It is concluded that with modern face equipment and conveyor belt lines, concentrated mining followed by immediate extraction of pillars is practicable and is giving excellent results at Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONBurwood Colliery, the total holding of which now comprises some 3,140 acres of land and 1,450 acres of sea leases, has mined the Borehole Seam since 1883. The early work took place from Nos. 1 and 2 shafts at Glenrock Lagoon and later on at Nos. 3 and 4 shafts at Whitebridge to which the centre of operations shifted in 1893, shaft sinking at this latter area having commenced in 1888.As all the early operations were confined to the Borehole Seam, reserves of coal on this horizon had been considerably reduced by the mid 1930's, so a cross measure drift was driven to the Victoria Tunnel Seam which is about 300 ft. above the Borehole Seam, and fully mechanized coal winning commenced from the second seam in 1938. Education in Australia now has to respond to a very wide political and policy agenda. The political emphasis is upon increasing participation and retention rates with a view to greater graduation rates in `high-tech' disciplines. There is an implied linkage between `education' and `economic well-being'. Our argument is that equalitarianism in education tends towards mediocrity. In this context many Geoscience educators view the future with pessimism. The argument is that science has been `sold short' and needs revitalising. We contend that Geoscience coursework should be a feature of both secondary and tertiary education in Australia. To this end we propose six policy initiatives to increase the content of Geoscience in education programmes.

The Cononish gold-silver deposit is a steep, relatively narrow quartz-vein system, with a current total mineral resource of 154 000 oz Au and 589 000 oz Ag. The northeast-southwest trending system was emplaced into late Proterozoic metasediments, and postdates metamorphism and associated Caledonian Orogenic foliations. Assay and mineralogical data show that gold and silver is spatially associated with sulfides in quartz. The main sulfide is pyrite, but galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur in small amounts. Gold occurs as electrum, with minor native gold, and silver occurs additionally as tellurides and native metal. The gold/electrum is fine-grained, generally less than 100 microns in size. The main ore shoots plunge 45¦ south-west, have a 40 m to 80 m intersection with the existing underground development and extend between 40 m and 260 m down plunge. Small-scale sulfide-bearing domains within the vein carry the highest gold grades. They collectively define the ore shoots, where one or two, and rarely three, of the domains are present at an individual site in the vein. Discontinuity of individual domains, variation in domain thickness and internal heterogeneity results in short scale variation in grade across the structure. Geological mapping along a 1.2 km exploration adit has provided critical æconditioningÆ data to support resource evaluation based on development and relatively wide spaced drilling. In addition, it has provided an indication of potential challenges that could be encountered during production.

The coalmining industry in most countries has, at various times, suddenly been confronted with a decrease in demand for coal. Readjustments made to reduce productive capacity to match the reduced demand for coal have often resulted in hardship to mineworkers, loss of capital investment to mineowners and loss of coal reserves. The consequences of the methods of readjustment adopted in the past have contributed to the low esteem in which coalmining has come to be regarded by a large section of the gel).eral public in many countries.Four sections of the coalmining industry, representing different periods of time, different countries, and different methods of industrial organisation have been examined:Great Britain and the U.S.A. during the inter war years, the post war European Coal and Steel Community, and post war Great Britain under the National Coal Board. An assessment has been made of the methods adopted in each case to reduce productive capacity to match a reduced demand for coal. Finally the fundamentals of the problem-as it affects the coalmining industry of any country-are considered, and possible solutions put forward.During the 1950's, surplus productive capacity was a problem in many coalmining countries, including Australia and New Zealand. As a rule no techniques are developed beforehand to solve problems introduced by a sudden decrease in demand for coal. The situation is usually tackled by a series of short term decisions based on expediency, which often in the long run only aggravate the problem.

Prospectivity, the relative value of gold, investor confidence, general economic stability and legislation driven by public attitudes are seen as the major influences on the gold mining industry in New Zealand. Since the 1860s the gold mining industry in New Zealand has been subject to the complex interaction of these influences resulting in three successive boom and bust periods. The booms are related to periods of greatest potential economic growth. The busts are more strongly related to downturns in the economy and falling gold price. The influences may be expressed as trends over time. The role of gold has changed from being a currency base to that of a traded commodity. This change has caused price instability and rapid fluctuations in its value. Increased competing land uses, shifting public attitudes and legislative changes have added to the instability of the industry. Reaction against change is to be expected from the companies until new legislation is seen to be functioning efficiently. Other trends show that there has been a tendency towards reduced exploration and consolidation of active gold mining projects. The future consequences of this are likely to be felt both regionally and nationally as there will be no new discoveries to fill production voids which will develop as currently producing mines close. The review of New Zealand's resource use statutes is nearly complete. A period of legislative stability can now be expected. There are some positive signs that consents will be obtained much more quickly than under previous legislation, particularly by those companies which develop the skills to work with the system. The new regime is about consideration of impacts rather than specific activities. This, together with excellent prospectivity, bodes well for the identification of mineral resources in New Zealand.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) Mae Moh coal mine is an open-cut coal mine in Thailand that produces about 16 Mt of lignite annually to generate 2400 MW of electricity. The surface mine pit covers is 4 km by 7 km with mining depths ranging up to 260 m. A large pit slope is formed with the progression of the mining operation. However, massive slides in the pit slope occur often due to the existence weak planes such as faults and bedding, and the weak mechanical properties of the rocks. Hence, 200 m to 300 m boundaries of rock block including coal seams are left in front of faults in order to prevent slides and maintain the stability of the pit slope. As a result, there are significant coal reserves beneath the abandoned area along the pit slope. Moreover, the mined coal seams are very thick and their thickness range from 15 to 30 m.This paper discusses the application of multi-slicing highwall mining system with stowing to this very thick coal seam left around large pit slopes by means of numerical analysis.

The Golden Cross, low-sulfidation, epithermal deposit shows a number of features that are directly or indirectly related to boiling hydrothermal fluids. Occurrences of lattice calcite and their quartz pseudomorph equivalents in veins, and occurrences of adularia in veins and in the surrounding altered rocks in the vicinity of ore, are both direct evidence of deposition in the presence of boiling hydrothermal fluids. Loss of carbon dioxide causes calcite deposition (platy variety) near the level of first boiling, while adularia deposits due to the attendant pH increase along the cooling flow path. Indirect evidence of boiling include crustiform-colloform quartz banding, late massive calcite veins, clay-carbonate alteration in the shallow and peripheral parts of the ore zone, and the restricted vertical interval of precious metal mineralisation. The colloform quartz banding strongly resembles the banding in amorphous silica deposits found in geothermal surface pipes. This implies that fluids ascending the Empire Vein structure were saturated in amorphous silica. If so, then they must have undergone phase separation, which initiated at considerable depth (e.g. =1000 m) and very hot temperatures (e.g. =300¦C). On the basis of stable isotope data, late massive calcite veins appear to have deposited from CO2-rich steam-heated waters. Calcite deposited along heating paths as these waters descended into the upflow zone during late stage collapse of the hydrothermal plume. In active systems, such steam heated waters form by deep boiling. The high CO2 contents of these waters promote hydrolytic alteration and the formation of clay-carbonate alteration. Reaction path modelling using CHILLER and a deep, Broadlands-Ohaaki water as an analogue, shows that minerals deposit along boiling flow paths over discrete spatial intervals. Calcite and adularia deposit near the site of first boiling, followed by gold and then by amorphous silica. For deep boiling starting at 300¦C, these minerals deposit over a path length that exceeds 1000 m. The distribution of banded quartz and gold at Golden Cross are consistent with such a boiling model. However, the elevation of first boiling must have fluctuated over 500 m to account for the coincidence of lattice quartz (pseudomorphs of platy calcite) and adularia, crustiform-colloform silica and gold over distances of a few centimeters in veins. We deduce that a downward propagating boiling front and expansion of two-phase flashing in a flowing water column occurred during episodes of high vertical permeability and fluid flux in the Empire vein structure.

Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralised areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado , has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles: 1. could have been better utilized to first predict and minimise the environmental problems, and 2. can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.

Gas management practices across the Australian underground coal industry have evolved significantly since the early nineties with the introduction of hazard management plans, directional drilling techniques, surface gas predrainage methods, and the widespread use of ventilation and gas reservoir simulation software.The improvements are evidenced by a substantial reduction in the occurrence of outbursts and gas related delays during a period where coal production rates have increased three to four fold. The development of effective gas predrainage strategies have been afforded by the use of reservoir simulators and a significant increase in the availability of measured gas reservoir data, in particular gas content and composition, adsorption isotherms and permeability. That said significant opportunities remain to optimise gas drainage designs and increase certainty in the gas predrainage design process through an enhanced understanding of coal seam permeability and how it is applied in the gas drainage design process.This paper describes the discrepancies between measured and actual seam permeability found during the recent assessment of two pilot predrainage programs executed in the coal measures of Queensland’s Bowen Basin. The results of those programs illustrate the need to better understand the validity of measured permeability data. The history match method employed in the pilot well assessments is proposed as an integral step in the routine gas drainage design processes that will ultimately lead to increased certainty and flexibility in gas predrainage practices.CITATION:Blanch, M, 2017. Tapira Mine (Tapira, MG, Brazil) is the largest phosphate ore and concentrate producer in Brazil. The mine is an open pit, which until recently operated with a large equipment fleet and now uses a smaller fleet operated by contractors. The annual production reaches 17 Mt of ore plus 14 Mt of waste at a stripping ratio of 0.82. Defining the geological boundaries and forecasting the annual production can be a difficult task if not performed on a reliable model. The geological model has been totally reviewed as well as the estimation process. Ordinary Kriging has been used to build the new block model with P2O5 and contaminant grades. After estimation, block model validation and classification criteria definition to assess resources and reserves, the result is given by the life-of-mine plan is defined after pit optimisation and design. The Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm implemented in the NPV Scheduler was used to define the long-term production targets based on the main parameters P2O5 and the contaminants that are just important to the beneficiation process.

The first part (lH of this work dealt with the process of recrystallization of single crystals of lead after deformation by creep, as revealed by macroscopical examination. It was shown that when recrystallization commenced, a crystal, termed the primary crystal, started to grow at the edge of the specimen and extended into the body of the specimen along the slip planes. At some stage during the growth of this crystal, other crystals appeared at the boundary of this first crystal and fragments of the parent crystal. From thispoint, recrystallization was accelerated with relatively rapid necking down of the specimen until fracture occurred.All those crystals formed after the primary crystal were given the term secondary crystals. In the present paper is given a detailed account of the orientations of the primary and secondary crystals.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe size of the test pieces and the manner of loading were given in the previous paper (1). X-ray back reflection photographs were taken of the individual primary and secondary crystals and from them were determined the orientations. This paper forms the second of a series, in which it is proposed to communicate the results of an extensive research into the influence of alloying elements on the physical properties of lead, now being carried out in the Metallurgy School of the University of Melbourne.Some general comments on this research were made by the present writer as an introduction to the first contribution by R. S. Russell*: It was there pointed out that it was the intention to prepare lead as pure as possible, to determine its properties and then to make alloys with the various elements added singly, and in various combinations, in order to determine the effect of each. This line of action is still being pursued.It occurred to the writer, however, that this fundamental attack might, with advantage, be accompanied by a parallel investigation in which lead of commercial purity would form the basis material. Everyone present today is especially aware of the need for minerals in this society of ours. The words 'especially aware' were deliberately chosen because this is a meeting of the NZ Branch of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy not a dilettante group such as some of our critics. Members of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy knew that our great farming industry, our shelter, our transport and our energy supply, are largely dependent on a flow of minerals into this country despite the presence of large coal and natural gas reserves. Flow in was said because New Zealand imports most of its mineral requirements with all the consequential strategic and economic disadvantages. If the above statements are accepted by this gathering it would be a premise fairly stated that New Zealand has a great need to discover and develop minerals.
