Recent exploration for gold on the Pacific Rim has utilised similarities between active hydrothermal systems and epithermal gold deposits. The major control over formation of such deposits is the hydrology of the ore-depositing hydrothermal system, which varies depending upon its geologic setting.

Large GDP increases in the Pacific Rim countries have been accompanied by similarly large increases in demand for oil products. In the case of residual fuels, this demand has been tempered by the substitution of other energy products such as coal or gas.In the region's developing and newly industrialised nations, it has not been possible to make the very large investements in infrastructure which allow other energy sources to be used for transportation. As a result, GDP growth has been mirrored in the demand growth for automotive fuels. Other non-sustitutable products such as lubricants have also benefitted by the region's GDP growth.The combination of a number of years of sustained growth, coupled with increasing quality requirements is now stretching the upgrading capacity of the region's refineries. If, as seems likely, the region continues to enjoy a high GDP growth rate, then this will be accompanied by increasing reliance on finished products coming out of the Middle East. The owners of the most simple form of refinery in which crude is simply distilled and the naphtha reformed into petrol will face major capital investments. If they decide not to bear this cost, they will face increasing problems in selling their surplus residual fuel oil at an economic price. Quality will become an increasingly important issue. Not only in the well publicised areas such as unleaded petrol, but also for products such as lubricants which play a major role in the efficiency of modem equipment. Quality of service such as hours of opening, ease of access, and service station facilities will also become increasingly important as the oil companies use these to attract customers and gain brand differentiation.

Local accumulation of methane in workings of a longwall is one of the most common causes of mining accidents. This gas has many sources: it may leak from goaf through permeable sealings, or through gaps between roof support sections. This stream is then mixed with ventilation air. In the case of auxiliary ventilation ducts, or free jet fans, we have to consider the propagation of a clean air stream in areas with an air-methane mixture. Therefore, modelling the mixing process of methane with ventilation air is important for determining the hazardous areas and thus to ensure safety. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), specifically the finite volume method, provides tools for such modelling. However, this method requires validation. For this purpose, we have compared measurements with simulations for selected test cases having sufficient similarity to the present problems. In typical methane explosion hazard areas, such as a longwall, it is difficult to make measurements sufficiently to confirm credibility of 3D CFD simulations. As a relevant alternative, an injector methane drainage station placed in an underground gallery has been selected. The stream of drained goaf methane is entrained by compressed air powered injectors and then mixed with ventilation air. Research in this area does not interfere with mining operations, it can be performed safely in a repeatable way. Flow within the site has many similarities to conditions in mine drifts of the longwall area. Comparative research of measuring the methane concentration distribution in the mine drift downstream injector station, with simulations of propagation of the methane stream, was carried out. For measuring the methane concentration distribution in the mine drift a multipoint measurement velocity system developed at the Strata Mechanics Research Institute was used. For the simulation a finite volume method for turbulent flow of gas mixtures was applied. Preliminary results of comparison are shown as graphs and tables.CITATION:Janus, J and Krawczyk, J, 2013. The pilot scale testing of Australian coals for their NO, emissions was carried out at the ACTC to investigate the influence of coal properties, furnace conditions and different NO,, control strategies on NO,, emissions. The NOx emissions for the Australian coals tested were found to vary over a wide range and primarily depended on combustion temperature and excess oxygen conditions. These coals did not exhibit any fundamental difference in NOx levels to other world coals. Under similar combustion conditions, the conversion of coal nitrogen to NO. was found to be best correlated with coal rank parameter, R, max per centage. The use of staged combustion as a control strategy was shown to reduce their NOx levels by 56 - 77 per cent.

The development and optimisation of mill discharge trommels, and specifically their screen panels, can be a neglected area in the complex operation of a minerals processing plant. Trommels are often seen as a ‘set and forget’ component of the circuit, even when significant improvements in design are possible. A redesigned trommel and panel arrangement has simplified and added flexibility to the plant shutdown schedule at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville Gold Mine in Central Victoria.Prior to the trommel redesign, the shutdown frequency was determined by the expected life of trommel panels at 14 weeks. Planning downtime around this item led to higher maintenance costs and wastage in other areas of the plant. This was particularly disruptive with respect to mill lining change-outs, which were forced out of sequence and often changed prematurely. Fosterville Gold engaged Metso Australia Limited to propose a new trommel design that would better suit the site. The new trommel was engineered to balance simplicity with performance, and incorporated the latest in Modular trommel design, modelling and Finite Elemental Analysis (FEA). Modular Panels and Spiral Segments achieve significantly longer life, and allow in-situ panel change outs, flexibility in spiral and dam positioning and an improvement in classification performance. Trommel panel life has significantly increased from 14 to 71 weeks in the trommel’s highest wearing zone. The new design has eliminated some risks to safety by reducing manual labour and lifting requirements during shutdowns. There is greater flexibility with respect to shutdown requirements. Designing for early access to deep orebodies is an essential driver for improved project payback. Vertical shaft sinking techniques have been developed to allow concurrent mine level excavation while continuing to sink. Project cash flows can also be improved when simultaneously deepening existing shafts beneath operating hoisting systems. Further economic advantage has been realised through creative sinking sequencing in twin ventilation/service shaft projects. A fourth technique to reduce project schedules involves partial shaft barrel equipping allowing unrestricted access to construct stations and continue with level installations. This approach reduces interference with barrel sinking activities to insignificant proportions. This paper reviews how these approaches have added significant value to actual shaft sinking projects, as assessed from a contractorÆs perspective, and discusses some of the practical issues to be addressed when planning future projects. Designers need to take cognisance throughout all project engineering phases of the adage that you are only sinking when cleaning the face. Cleaning can only be sustained when there is sufficient hoisting capacity.

The Engel Model search simulator is described with particular emphasis on preparation of input parameters. The computer has a "black box" role in the same way a telephone or radio is a "black box" in communications. A search technique (sensor) is selected and applied in two stages of'search, namely, reconnaissance and detailed. The model relies on knowing and quantifying the parameters of the target sought and the search technique; this is usually done by analogy studies from available literature and experience. The parameters are then balanced by feasibility studies on the search area. Case histories show that the study makes the user aware of what he is likely to find rather than what he wants or needs to find to be viable. Two case histories are presented: one for Mississippi Valley type lead- zinc deposits and another for stratiform copper. The first study showed particular benefits in the input stage and highlighted the fact that one could expect a lot of encouragement by way of interesting results but with little chance of finding the high-grade,

After considerable input from the mining industry, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) finalised National Instrument 43-101: Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects. This Instrument, which became law across Canada on 1 February 2001, applies to all technical public disclosure on mineral projects and requires all technical disclosure to be based on the work of a æqualified personÆ (QP). While the QP is quite similar to the Competent Person in Australia there are important differences when it comes to all disclosure. This paper will summarise the main areas in which the Instrument introduces major changes to Canadian disclosure standards on mineral projects including the role and responsibility of the qualified person; the increased requirements to file technical reports; the incorporation by reference of the October 2000 CIM definitions of resources and reserves and additional rules governing written disclosure of scientific and technical information. In October 2001, eight months after the implementation of NI 43-101, the CSA compiled a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) and CSA responses to assist mining industry participants and their advisors in understanding and applying NI-43-101. This document has been well received by industry. The CSA plans to update the FAQs when further guidance is requested. Two industry committees have been established to provide the CSA with technical advice on the application of NI 43-101. As recommended by the Ontario Securities Commission/Toronto Stock Exchange Mining Standards Task Force, the CSA has established an external industry advisory committee û the Mining Technical Advisory and Monitoring Committee (MTAMC) û to monitor the application of NI 43-101 and advise the CSA on industry and professional developments. The role of the CSA-Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Working Committee on Reserves and Resources is to ensure that the future changes and updates to the CIM Standards can be efficiently and effectively incorporated in NI 43-101. During this first year, the Canadian securities regulators have seen an improvement in the quality of disclosure on mineral projects, which will increase investor confidence in the industry.

Most coal mines in Chongqing Area are highly gassy mines and liable to outburst of coal cnd methane. In order to harness mine environment and raise the Prodction capacity, methane predrainage is generally taken as a main preventive measure against outburst by all mines. In the recent ten years, the drainage volume per year has increased from 38.25 million m3 to mote than 100 million m3 with a volume over 12 m3 per tome of coal. In some mines, the draining rate is approaching to 50 percent, the rate in mining districts is up to 60 to 70 percent. The predrainage volume accounts for one fourth of total drainage volume. All these have effectively prevented the occurrence of coal and methane outbursts.This is the current situation of methane predrainage in coal mines in Chongqing area, the methods of predrainage to prevent outbursts and related parametres comprise:1. methods, technologies, supervision and effect of predrainage in different geological and mining conditions,2. the change of methane parametres pre-and post-drainage and the analysis of the effect of methane predrainage to prevent outbursts, and3. ways to improve the effect of methane predrainage.Thus the safety, reliability and production of Changqing Coal Mines will be enhanced.

Traditionally, the development of a mineral resource project goes through a fairly set pattern of decisions from what commodities to search for; where to look; how to locate; what are the reserves; how can they be exploited with optimum returns for all stakeholders; where are the markets and what will be the price received; what financing arrangments? However, due to the unique nature of most mineral resource properties, the relative significance of individual parameters on the ultimate development decision will vary from project to project. Sensitivity analysis in its formal sense is most frequently related to the economic analysis of a project particularly in conjunction with the ultimate development decision making process, and acknowledges the uncertainty of the actual values with their impact on the corporate decision making yardsticks. In many cases, this analysis merely adds more values to confuse the decision makers who may well opt for some subjective rationale to overcome the numeric confusion. However, sensitivity analysis should be used more frequently to exploit the development dollar to its maximum, THROUGHOUT the phases leading to the development decision. It is essential to identify the critical inputs to the various decision tiers in a project as early as possible and direct the funds to ensure that these parameters are determined as accurately as possible. Examples are used to illustrate the need for an even-handed quantification of the parameters which affect the outcome of decisions en route to the final one while minimising the risk in making an optimum assessment in relation to development funds Available.

A major aspect in competitive ironmaking is to replace metallurgical coke by injecting alternative cheap fuels. Whereas in the past, heavy oil injection as well as on a lower scale natural gas injection have proved to be reliable, the progressing high price level of these fuels has prompted international interest in looking for alternative cheaper fuels, especially pulverized coal. Theoretical analysis and practical operations showed that for constant adiabatic flame temperature, potentially more coke may be replaced by injected coal than by heavy oil, because of less endothermic cracking of hydrogen components. Since about 1974, the ARBED-Group has been looking for alternative fuels and in 1976 came to conclusion to select for first trials pulverized lignite for the following reasons:

In the smelting section, flexible fuels such as coal or coke are used in place of heavy fuel oil in order to utilize energy sources more efficiently. Heat recovered from the off gas of the furnace has been converted by the waste heat boiler into steam, which is used for self power generation and for heating or maintaining various temperatures. The amount of the recovered steam in the smelter is currently increasing due to maximum utilization of powdered cokes. The heat source required to maintain the temperature of the electrolyte in the tank house is electric power and steam. However until recent year this steam was provided by its own heavy oil combustion type boiler in the tank house since the amount of steam consumed in heating the electrolyte is large. Though experimental work over the last few years has shown the advantages of reducing steam in the tank house by fully covering the cell, the implementation of the full cover can lead to other operating problems. However various improvements, mainly the covering of the cell with a simple device, have led to greatly reduced steam consumption. As a result, steam for the tank house is now provided by the waste heat boiler only bringing more efficient energy usage.

Risk exposure in tunnel projects is extremely high due to various factors such as variability of subsurface conditions, selection of inappropriate design and tunnelling methods, improper risk assessment on adjacent surface and subsurface structures and utilities, and inadequate contractual practices. The risks in tunnelling must be borne by the contractor, designer and the owner of a tunnelling project. There have been a number of improvements in the last ten to 15 years in the manner in which tunnel projects are developed and implemented in terms of their design, construction, financing and operations. One significant improvement has been the manner in which underground conditions and their risks are being managed. Owners are less willing to transfer the full responsibility to the contractor for managing the underground conditions, although this is a familiar manner in which underground major urban projects have been previously contracted and managed. The owners of tunnel projects in Singapore have advanced the risk management process for their projects through geotechnical interpretative baseline reports (GIBRs), geotechnical data reports (GDRs) and project specifications (PSs). This paper discusses industry practice and its development as well as the application during the preparation and use in Singapore on the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) and the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) project in Singapore. The DTSS trunk sewer is 48 km and ranges from 3.3 m to 6 m finished diameter up to 50 m below the ground. The underground conditions ranged from Old Alluvium, strengths of about 1 MPa to competent Bukit Tima granite, with strengths of over 230 MPa. The total route length of the MCE is about 5 km. About 3.6 km will be constructed underground, consisting of dual five-lane carriageways. The underground construction will be cut-and-cover, and 2.6 km will be constructed about 13 m underground, and 1 km of tunnel will range from 13 m to 24 m as the tunnel passes under a 420 m wide reach of Marina Bay, whose crossing will be constructed as a two-phase cofferdam.

The geostatistical Discrete Gaussian (DG) model is demonstrated to be capable of providing an effective means of implementing change of support for Enterprise-style mineralisation and thus providing reliable global recoverable resource estimates. At Enterprise, sample grade distribution proves to be highly positively skewed, therefore significant deskewing of the histogram and reduction of variance occurs when going from sample to block support. The DG model was experimentally tested in'the Southern Primary Zone (SPZ) at Enterprise, where high anisotropy ratios and pronounced short range structures are observed in variograms. The experimental test was run for a change of support for which the variance reduction was. approximately 60 per cent. This reduction is similar to that predicted by Krige's Relationship ('the volume-variance relationship') for the practical situation of a change of support from 5 m vertical blasthole samples to 3 m x 8 m x 5 m selective mining unit (SMU) blocks. The DG model was found to correctly predict the grade tonnage relationships for a wide range of cut off grades. The experimental test indicated that, given a representative histogram and variogram, the DG change of support provides a computationally efficient and practical means of reliably assessing global mineable resources at the early stages of a mining project. Further, it allows a range of selectivity strategies to be meaningfully and comparatively considered prior to mining.

Fine feed fractions in the size range from 1 to 40 ¦m of materials with different hardness as limestone and silicon carbide have been stressed in two different devices. A tungsten-carbide-blodc allows a single stressing with a pressure up to 2000 MPa and a 4-piston-block enables a multiple stressing procedure in which the material bed is stressed in alternating directions with a pressure up to 700 MPa. The experiments show energy absorption as the major factor for the interparticle breakage of hard material, like quartz, zircon silicate, silicon carbide and smelted oonindum, pressure, however, does not influence the results within the investigated range from 100 to 700 MPa and even up to 2000 MPa for corundum. But the breakage of the middle-hard limestone depends on the pressure so far as more fineness can be produced if the same energy is introduced at a lower pressure level. The creation of very fine and microfine fragments decreases strongly with increasing hardness of the feed materiaL The energy consumption for producing microfine material with a multiple stressing procedure on a particle bed is much lower than that one of a usual milling process. But this procedure needs a classification with a seperation cut at a couple of microns, which is not easy to accomplish.

There are a number of methods available for the determination of the fracture toughness of rock. Some of the most recognised methods include the hollow pressured cylinder, the short-rod, the chevron - edge-notched round bar in bending and the disc-shaped compact specimen. Most of these tests are difficult and expensive to conduct. In this paper the simple Brazilian testing of discs for tensile strength has been used to determine their fracture toughness. Tests were conducted on six different rock types and the values of the fracture toughness obtained for each type are in close agreement with the results of the well recognised the chevron edged types. A large number of countries in the world now have some regulation for labelling the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in food. For the last ten years, ISO/TC 34/SC 16 has been providing methods, guidelines and requirements concerning the evaluation of molecular biomarkers including GMOs. This activity makes sure that stakeholders on all sides of commercial transactions are satisfied and their marketing or regulatory needs are met. Developing and maintaining a transparent, science-based environment for users of horizontal methods for molecular biomarker analysis is a high priority. Sampling and analysis of molecular biomarkers has become critically important for food and agricultural organisations developing, producing, distributing and selling genetically engineered, non-genetically engineered, identity preserved and/or organic crops and their derived products and preventing their respective destructive diseases. To aid in international harmonisation, a new work item proposal to develop an ISO type A management system standard (MSS) for organisations including laboratories using molecular biomarker analysis and sampling has been submitted to ISO/TC 34/SC 16. The purpose of this MSS is ensuring that determination of the presence, absence or quantification of a particular biomarker with a relationship to a product quality determinant, a marketing claim, a regulation or a plant pathogen is carried out under a suitable quality assurance / quality control system. This MSS will provide an overarching system to apply and manage molecular biomarker analysis and sampling for any organisation large, medium or small in a private, government or academic setting.CITATION:Sussman, M D, 2017. The man in the street (and no doubt most members of the Institute) thinks of wire, if he gives it any thought at all, as a most commonplace commodity. It is an accepted necessity, and like most necessities is taken for granted, unless a shortage in one or other of its multitudinous forms or products causes inconvenience.For many years Australia has ·been a large consumer of wire, particularly for fencing. With the rapid development of secondary industry the demand has increased in both size and character until at the present time much of the wire produced in this country is used as raw material for subsequent manufacturing processes. The call has been of so varied a nature that the Newcastle Wire Mills now turn out a greater variety of wire types than any other single plant in the world.In this paper, the aim is to provide a picture of the manufacturing, properties, and uses of wire. No attempt is made to cover the subject in any detail, as the field is much too broad for anything other than general treatment. Many phases, particularly in regard to manufacturing processes, are, therefore, dealt with cursorily, but it is hoped that the paper will, without delving too deeply into the technical aspects of Wire production, give a general appreciation of:- (a) How steel wire is made. (b) The remarkable physical characteristics obtained by judicious combination of chemical composition, heat treatment, and subsequent cold work. THE method of stope surveying as practised at the Mount Lyell Company's mines has been evolved out of the exigencies created by special conditions. It presents some novel features, and has proved effective for all requirements. All stope measurement work is brought under one complete system, to which office methods are standardized. Before proceeding to deal with the subject a brief description of the physical characteristics of the ore-bodies of each mine and the method of stoping will serve to show, cause ,for departure from ordinary survey practice.NORTH LYELL MINEThe ore-bodies of this mine occur on or near the conglomerate schist contact, and, being probably the result of replacements of both rocks, they rarely present any definite walls. It is usual for the payable material to merge into the respective countryrocks, and the limit of the occurrence is defined rather by assay value than by any distinct natural boundaries. The general configuration of these ore-bodies, therefore, is highly erratic both in horizontal and vertical section, so that, in order to obtain an accurate record of any occurrence, the measurement of the actual contour at short vertical intervals is essential.Stoping is carried out on a modification of the "rill." system, perhaps more properly described as "arched back" or "dome" stoping. Mullock rises are placed in as convenient positions as the erratic configuration of each ore-body will allow, and aroundthese rises the back is kept well arched, both longitudinally and transversely.
