The upper amphibolite-grade mctasediments of thc rinaroo area, North Queensland, form part of a regional aurcole to the large Tinaroo Batholith and are the stratigraphic equivalents of the Hodgkinson Formation of gencrally low metamorphic grade. There is no evidence of any lithological unconformity.The higher grade metasediments have a more complex deformation history than is typical for thc surrounding region and this may bc due to one or a combination of two factors; an additional strain componcnt associated wilh the intrusion of Ihe Tinaroo Batholith, or a more marked finite strain response to the overall regional stress field within hotter. more ductile rocks.Four deformational events can be characterized within Ihc Tinaroo Area. Close to Ihe Tinaroo Batholith D1 and D2, arc so strongly developed that they disrupl the continuily of Ihe original Iithological layering. In the aureole region, D1 is strongly overprinted and its original fabric intensity is obscured, but both D2 and D3 display a mappable decrease in intensity away from the granite margin. These three deformations occurred during Carboniferous or early Permian time. D4 is later and only patchily developed.The broad, moderate pressure metamorphic aureole surrounding the Tinaroo Batholith is a typical of the CairnsCooktown group of Permo-Carboniferous granitoids. which usually develop narrow, lower pressure contact aureoles. Two periods of metamorphism are distinguishable. The first reached peak temperatures somewhat greater than 520°C, the second temperatures around 620-630° C immediately adjacent to the granite contact.Several cale-silicate lenses containing scattered scheelite mineralization occur within the area. Scheelite appears to have crystallized at the same time as the cale-silicate minerals, its appearance coinciding with the intrusion of the Tinaroo Batholith. Unlike many "skarn-type" scheelite deposits, the scheelite-bearing cale-silicates are Fe-poor, with no positive correlation between total Fe and W.

Magnetic separator operation in the recovery of magnetite in heavy medium circuits was studied by conducting a series of tests on a full size wet drum magnetic separator.The significant operational variables were found to be feed pan clearance, squeeze pan clearance, dry magnetite feed rate and separator drum speed. With feed and squeeze pan clearances optimized for typical primary separator operation, magnetite loss and concentrate specific gravity were found to be related in a regular manner to dry magnetite feed rate at any drum speed.A two component model of magnetite loss is proposed, relating total magnetite loss to losses in the feed pan and squeeze pan zones. The experimental curves relating magnetite loss to dry magnetite feed rate at the various drum speeds are interpreted in terms of the two component model.The magnetite particle size distribution in the separator was also examined. The tailings magnetite was found to be finer than the feed magnetite only when the dry magnetite feed rate was low, or immediately following the introduction of a new charge of magnetite when the separator was fed at an intermediate dry magnetite feed rate.

Increasing demand for copper, lead and zinc with continuous depletion of good grade ore reserves, warrants the need for utilization of lean and complex ores of these metals. There is worldwide effort to develop suitable processes for these purposes. The present paper deals with the chloride leaching of complex base metal sulphide concentrates of two Indian deposits. A two stage leaching process is suggested keeping selectivity of metal dissolution in view.In the first stage most of the lead and zinc are reacted with dilute FeCI3 (0.3M) solutions at a temperature ono°c where major portion of the lead remains in the residue and zinc reports in solution. After taking out lead chloride by brine leaching, the residue has been treated for copper dissolution. A concentrated FeCI3 leaching at boiling temperature as well as ambient aqueous chlorine leaching have been separately tried to dissolve out the copper from the residue. Based on the results obtained, a flowsheet for the proposed process is presented.

Gunite was invented in 1907 by Carl Akeley to repair a crumbling facade of the Field Columbian Museum in Chicago. The method used was to blow dry material out of a hose with compressed air and inject water at the nozzle as it was released. In 1911, he was granted a patent for his invention, the ‘cement gun’; the equipment used; and ‘gunite’, the material that was produced.The advantages of using the dry mix process is that the water content can be adjusted instantaneously, allowing more effective placement in overhead and vertical applications without using accelerators. The dry mix process is useful in repair applications when it is necessary to stop frequently as the dry material is easily discharged from the hose.This paper describes the applications and principles of the gunite pump system in underground coal mining and discusses why it is the preferred spraying system for both cement and plaster products.It also addresses improving productivity and examines dust, respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and health issues around gunite pump systems. The Olympic Dam iron-oxide copper-gold (IOCG) uranium-silver deposit is second in size only to Norilsk, the gigantic metalliferous deposit. Olympic Dam is the largest publicly declared uranium, fifth largest copper and third largest gold resource. The deposit is typified by texturally destructive brecciation and intense iron metasomatism of the Roxby Downs Granite, bedded clastic facies rocks and mafic-ultramafic dykes. The deposit contains over 100 minerals. Copper mineralisation consists of chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcocite. Uraninite, coffinite and brannerite are the dominant uranium-bearing minerals. Gold mineralisation consists of electrum, tellurides and Au-Cu alloys. Hessite is the major silver-bearing mineral. The economic minerals are disseminated throughout the breccia matrix where the average grain sizes of the Cu-sulfide, uranium, gold and silver minerals are ~50, 20, <5, <5 microns, respectively.A significant number of sampling theory-based test programs have been completed since the mid-1990s to establish sampling nomographs, select appropriate sampling (ie split versus chip and interval lengths) and sample preparation protocols, quantify the errors associated with each subsampling stage, determine the practical uncertainty limits of Olympic Dam matrix-matched standards, and identify improvement opportunities related to the ongoing assaying quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) program. Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) Sorting in the Upgrading and Processing of Skorpion Non-Sulfide Zinc Ore In 2008 Anglo American sponsored a research project at RWTH Aachen University to assess the feasibility of the use of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for ore waste discrimination at the Skorpion zinc mine. The Skorpion mine is an open pit zinc mine located in Namibia, owned by Anglo American with an annual production of 150 000 t/a of super high grade pure zinc. Opportunities for the implementation of NIRS sorting for the Skorpion process exist to upgrade currently subeconomic material, including the marginal dump (over 2000 000 tonnes, av grade of 2.5 per cent Zn). NIRS sorting is not yet implemented or established in the minerals industry however it is a proven technology in the plastics recycling industry, where more than 2000 NIRS sorters have already been installed. NIRS sorting, a type of sensor-based sorting, is a single particle sorting technique which classifies the particles based on the absorbed/reflected radiation in the near-infrared (NIR) region. A disadvantage of NIRS is that it is a surface measurement technique, but NIRS sorting shows overall great potential for the minerals industry. Skorpion ore minerals include zinc bearing phases such as sauconite, hemimorphite, smithsonite, and hydrozincite. These display diagnostic responses in the near-infrared. There are three major absorption features that characterise the reflectance spectra of the ore bearing minerals. These are due to OH and H2O molecular bonds. The spectral response of the waste material is caused by other minerals such as non-zinc-bearing clay minerals, calcite and impure quartz. Test work showed that it is theoretically possible to separate ore material from most waste material based on spectral response in the NIR region. In addition to upgrading material by removal of waste it is also potentially feasible to classify the material based on zinc grade. A tentative correlation between zinc grade and spectral response seems to exist for the sample test suite in the NIR region.

The Taupo Volcanic Zone inNew Zealand and the Philippine Mobile Belt in the Philippines are characterized by active subduction, active volcanism and high seismicity. The main factors affecting characteristics of geothermal systems in both countries are: tectonic setting, source magmas, maturity of the systems, and depth to the degassing magma body. Within New Zealand, geothermal systems are grouped into arc- and rift-type. Fluids in arc-type systems contain high amounts of volatiles (<20%), with high CO2/Cl, CO2/He, and N2/Ar ratios. Mantle-type volatiles predominate in rift-type systems. Philippine geothermal systems are largely arc-type, the topography is rugged, leading to the separation of water and vapour upflows, as opposed to the overlap found in New Zealand. The relatively shallow depths of degassing magma bodies in the Philippines results in steeper geochemical gradients, leading to higher proportions of arc-type magmatic water (>40%) and higher Cl contents (3000 - 10 000 mg/kg), Maximum temperatures are also higher, reaching up to >400¦C. Arc-type alteration assemblages in New Zealand and the Philippines are similar. Because Philippine geothermal systems are less mature, have higher temperatures and steeper geochemical gradients than New Zealand ones, advanced argillization is more widespread occurring down to depths of 2000 m. Mineral phases are more varied due to the active input of magmatic waters and the formation of vapor conditions at depth, forming P04-, B-, Li-, Ce-, F-, and Cl-bearing minerals at high temperatures. In the Philippines, high temperature magmatic-hydrothermal to contact metamorphic assemblages containing biotite, amphiboles and pyroxenes are relatively common, but rare in New Zealand.

In referring to two subjects of interest to the Members of this Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, I would at the outset desire to express our gratification that to-day we are able to welcome as now united with ourselves, those members who until recently constituted the New Zealand Institute. It is hoped that the amalgamation so amicably arranged may be productive of the best results to all concerned, incorporated as this combination has been at the moment of the fulfilment of that greater political union, the Australian Commonwealth.Since last Annual Meeting held in Brisbane, we have come under the same roof as the Chamber of Mines of Victoria, and we entertain the hope that as that Chamber and this Institute possess so many interests in common in the encouragement and advancement of mining and metallurgical progress in these colonies, that much mutual benefit will ensue. There are many directions in which each body can assist the other, and I trust that a friendly co-operation will be maintained.It is gratifying to feel that in all the colonies a distinct movement is being made to increase the facilities for education in Mining and Metallurgy but if I may refer to our colony of Victoria in particular, we have to express the profound regret that in the means of education in the higher branches, we occupy an inferior position, and it is quite certain that we will continue to do so unless the Government is prepared to subordinate provincial considerations to the weightier.

The commonly used Stopes-Heerlen coal petrographic classification and nomenclature has over the years been subject to variable interpretations. This paper discusses the problem with specific reference to the inertinite maceral group. The effect of various interpretations of the Stopes-Heerlen system on maceral analysis is discussed and illustrated by means of comparative analyses conducted by a number of laboratories in Australia.An attempt is made to define the reflectance thresholds used by the authors to subdivide the inertinite group; the genetic and technological significance of these thresholds are compared.The difficulties of distinguishing structured and nonstructured macerals of the inertinite group are discussed in terms of possible improvements to the present StopesHeerlen system by extending the classification to include transitional maceral types.

The Batu Hijau porphyry Cu-Au deposit in south-western Sumbawa, Indonesia is an ideal natural laboratory to study the fractionation of iron isotopes in magmatic rocks that range in composition from basaltic andesite to tonalite. Intrusive rocks are associated with a porphyry system that contains well-preserved early hypogene copper mineralisation. We analysed pre-, syn- and post-mineralisation igneous intrusive rocks. We also separated magnetite, chalcopyrite and bornite from hypogene porphyry-style quartz veins, and measured the Fe-isotope ratios of samples by solution multi-collector ICP-MS. Iron isotopic composition of samples from the magmatic suite show an increasing d57Fe with increasing SiO2, supporting geochemical and textural evidence that the Batu Hijau Tonalites underwent closed system fractionation. Equilibrium and co-existing mineral textures allow the calculation of the following preliminary empirical mineral-mineral fractionation factors at 500°C for certain mineral pairs.Iron isotopes have the potential to provide geothermometric data to complement fluid inclusion data, especially where heating stages have operational limitations and where fluid boiling results in a wide variety of inclusion types that may make analysis difficult.CITATION:Wawryk, C M, Foden, J D and Garwin, S L, 2015. Tin in ores containing 0·025 to 1·5 per cent tin can be determined polarographically by the reduction of the chlorostannite ion at the dropping mercury electrode in 2M hydrochloric acid solution containing 15 per cent ammonium chloride. The tin is separated from interfering elements by distillation as the tetrabromide and collected from the distillate by co-precipitation with aluminium hydroxide. The method can detect 0·01 per cent tin in ore.INTRODUCTIONAn iodimetric method, suitable for routine analysis of titrating tin in concentrations down to 1 per cent, has been available for some years (Low, Weinig, and Schoder, 1939).As concentrations fall below 1 per cent tin, there is increasing difficulty in obtaining a distinct end point due to large amounts of iron and silica normally present after fusion of the ore. Since concentrations of tin down to 0·02 per cent are significant in ore dressing products it was necessary to examine methods to determine such low concentrations, and to adapt these to tin ores containing a wide variety of other minerals.EXPERIMENTALDigestion and separationCassiterite, the principal tin mineral, is refractory but readily attacked by a sodium peroxide flux to yield soluble sodium stannate. In a recognized procedure, a sample of ore is mixed with up to 15 g of sodium peroxide in an iron crucible and swirled over the full heat of a Meker burner for 7 min. A systematic, detailed airborne geophysical programme carried out in the Taupo Volcanic Region (TVR) in 2005 by Glass Earth NZ Ltd culminated in the identification of 21 epithermal gold targets. In this paper we present the follow up ground-truthing results from the first target drilled, Tahunaatara (TAH).   The Tahunaatara target was identified by means of a multi-disciplinary integrated approach (ôdata interventionö) that defined and ranked the target as being highly prospective for epithermal gold mineralisation. A follow-up ground resistivity survey over the target area revealed the presence of a ôresistorö buried beneath an extensive cover of recent volcaniclastic material. Geochemical soil sampling carried out in conjunction with the resistivity survey yielded anomalous gold values.   The host unit at TAH consists primarily of flow banded rhyolitic lavas, volcaniclastic deposits and tuffs of the Ohakuri Ignimbrite with small outcrops of silicified bedded breccias forming local topographic highs. Results from the first orientation drill hole show wide zones of intense silicification, clay alteration and mineralisation. Sulphide mineralisation is disseminated throughout the core in association with hydrothermal replacement and also occurs in association with quartz veins and infill in fractures (sulphide-only veinlets as opposed to quartz + sulphide veinlets). Textural evidence from drill core indicates that hydrothermal fluid flow was multi-staged with potential for multi-stage gold, and other elements. The presence of polymictic hydrothermal eruptive breccias indicates a hydrothermal vent system.   Alteration varies from argillic to silicic, with pervasive adularia and vuggy silicification also present. Chlorite is minor and associated with quartz, illitic clay and adularia. Assay results currently available confirm the presence of anomalous gold values in association with zones of vuggy silica deposition and intense silicification.

Modem mineral exploration and development takes place within a data-rich context underpinned by a wide range of data acquisition, processing and interpretation technologies. This leads to requirements for consistent and explicit methods by which the relative risks - or success probabilities - of exploration programs can be assessed and communicated. Bayesian risk assessment methods are outlined which provide a starting point for this more rigorous approach to exploration investment.   Effective governance of information technologies becomes a core function of the modem competitive Board. As such it becomes a component of any business audit and any assessment of the quality and success potential of a company. Limited data however suggest that the average Board may be under-represented in this increasingly critical skill area.

As the theme of this conference is æRediscover OtagoÆ it would seem appropriate to revisit the era of the gold rushes and subsequent mining industry which rapidly advanced settlement and economic prosperity for Otago, and left permanent reminders in the form of historic mining sites, many of which are now encompassed within the Otago Goldfields Park. I have been invited to give a paper at this conference on the subject of æHistoric Goldfields of Central OtagoÆ. As well as having a working involvement with historic areas through my employment with the Department of Conservation, I have a personal interest in the early goldmining industry of Central Otago as my grandfather came out from Scotland in the 1890s to help construct gold dredges on the Molyneux. My grandfather made headlines in the local paper in 1920 when he believed he saw a New Zealand otter at Island Block near Beaumont - but that's another conservation trail that I will not pursue any further today! For this paper I intend to divide my time to cover the following topics. Firstly, I would like to sketch a mental picture of the characteristics that make up the Central Otago landscape, and the general perception that early miners must have had when viewing this foreign land. Then I would like to briefly discuss the changes and the consequences in the early gold rush to Central. Finally, I would like+ to discuss the establishment of the Otago Goldfields Park, which I will illustrate with several slides.

This paper deals chiefly with the preliminary examination, when a decision has to be made as to whether a prospect has a chance of developing into a mine or not. At this stage it is important to have a fairly clear conception of what is expected of the prospect, andjust what type of mine is sought. Much money can be wasted testing a prospect suitable for a prospector or small syndicate, but which never looked like becoming a mine of sufficient size to interest a company. When undertaking an inspection, therefore, it is necessary to have a broad outline, at least, of the policy of the principals for whom the report is intended.At this early stage it is frequently necessary to form an opinion of the prospects of a property on very meagre data. When new to this type of work one's first reaction is often th~t it is impossible to pass an opinion on the data available. It. is absolutely necessary,however, that an opinion of the possibilities and chances of favourable development be given; The report should strive to convey this information, making quite ::lear the risk involved, how complete are the data on which this opinion is based, and the possible magnitude of the prize. A Preliminary report has to state whether a property has sufficient prospects to warrant testing.The following procedure is suggested in order to make best use of the data and minimise hasty conclusions influenced by preconceived ideas-an ever-present danger.Examination.The first stage is the examination. This should aim at collecting all available significant data, but avoid clouding the issue with detail which, at this stage, will not affect the decision. The following points are considered to be the main ones for which to look:-Geological Environment.As good a working knowledge as possible'of the geology of the area should be obtained. Government Geological Survey reports and maps, if available, will be a big help. A detailed knowledge of the regional geology is not necessary a,t this stage, but a broad outline of the geological setting of the prospect under review, and also of any other important mines in the district, is often helpful in the final decision.The Nature of the Ore-Body.Any facts concerning the nature or occurrence of the lode should be noted as, coupled with experience of similar bodies, they affect the ultimate decision.Structural Control.This is probably the most important factor, in the light of present geological knowledge. Its chief importance is due to two facts:-(a) Structure plays one of the prime parts in ore deposition.(b) Geological knowledge, of structure is somewhat in advance of knowledge of other factors influencing ore deposition.

Gold recovered on the strikes at the Central Norseman mill, Norseman, Western Australia, has an approximate assay fineness of 850. Bullion recovered from the cyanide plant at the mine is of much lower value, and occasionally its assay fineness has been as low as 250. This indicates either that the fine gold particles in the ore consist of an alloy richer in silver than the coarse particles or else that a silver mineral, as well as the gold, is dissolved by the cyanide solutions.It had been observed at the mine that the amount of silver in the bullion appeared to increase when galena appeared to be more abundant in the stoped ore. Interest was, therefore, attached to the possible occurrence of a silver mineral associated with galena and, at the same time, soluble in cyanide.Four specimens of ore from different horizons in the mine were collected by the mine staff for examination as to whether any marked difference in the fineness of gold was apparent on a polished surface and for determination of the silver minerals. As the Norseman ore-body is a quartz reef containing a very small percentage of sulphide, the specimens were selected either because they cont;:lined free gold or because they were, relatively rich in sulphides. They were obtained from the following localities at the Phoenix shaft.1. Level 16, section 28.2. Level 16, section 31.3. Level 8, section 31.4. Level 14, section 38.Specimens Nos. 1 and 2 were thus obtained from different positions at the same mining horizon, while specimens Nos 2 and 3 were obtained from different levels in the same vertical section of the mine.All the specimens consist of quartz characterized by thin, discontinuous seams of sericite and the presence of a little ankerite. Gold and sulphides tend to be localized along these seams, but particles of gold and sulphides are also scattered throughout areas of white quartz. This scattered distribution of the sulphides in relatively wide areas of quartz has involved the preparation of two or more polished sections from each specimen.The outcome of the microscopical examination of these specimens has been to determine that there is no appreciable variation in the colour of the polished particles of gold and, therefore, no marked difference in the amount of silver alloyed with the coarse and fine particles. The presence of small quantities of the tellurides sylvanite, hessite and altaite has been revealed, and found to vary in abundance with the abundance of galena.

The efficiency of water sprays in suppressing airborne colliery dust depends on many variable factors. A survey of previous work in this field shows that swirl spray nozzles are the best dust suppressors.Investigations carried out in an experimental dust chamber show that, in spite of limitations to the application of water sprays in underground use, promising dust suppression efficiencies in mechanised mining can be obtained with swirl spray nozzles.INTRODUCTIONA dust hazard has always been associated with coal mining, and the recent growth of mechanisation has resulted in a greater production of fine coal and dust, thus increasing the hazard. A better knowledge and appreciation of the medical aspects and dust explosion factors has led to practices reducing the seriousness of the problem. However, the dust hazard still exists and its control is basically an engineering problem.Dust, as with any atmospheric pollution, may be removed from the, mine by ventilation, which is an indirect method of control. Direct methods, in which the dust is prevented from being produced and from becoming airborne, should be employed where possible. Of these direct methods the most significant is the use of water sprays.THE DUST HAZARDAn appreciation of the physical nature of the more important dust hazards is necessary before considering the removal of the hazard. The main hazards associated with colliery dusts are the health hazard and the explosion hazard. "Dust" comprises solid particles of size minus 20 mesh Tyler (833 microns).

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) schedule model is used for short- to medium-term planning and scheduling at the Fimiston Open Pit Mine (the Superpit). The model bridges the gap between grade control models, which are generated one to seven days prior to mining, and the annual Resource and Reserve model update that is used for budget and life-of-mine plans. The schedule model uses close-spaced grade control data (up to 20 000 m drilled each month) as well as resource definition drilling to estimate production volumes three to six months ahead of current mining. From this, a rolling 12 week mining and processing schedule is generated on a monthly basis. As the KCGM operation is mill and sulfur constrained, the schedule model needs to be an accurate predictor of ounces as well as tonnes, gold and sulfur grades. The process must also be time efficient in order to meet monthly planning and reporting deadlines. Due to the large amount of new data generated each month, model updates using conventional interpretation and estimation techniques have proven to be impractical and too time consuming.
