Factors leading to the necessity for some individual testwork in solving most specific hydraulic transportation problems are listed and a description is given of a method used in determining critical flow conditions. An outline is given of the basic theory of the purpose of the testwork, and a means of applying test results for varied pipeline diamet.er and material conditions follows. Engineering and economic factors are applied to the solution of a specific hydraulic transportation problem and the use of the test results in plant practice is illustrated. The advantages of connecting pumps in series in centralised pumping stations rather than individually along the pipeline are stressed. Percolation irrigation of low-grade quartz feldspar porphyry ore with pH 2.0 H2SO4 at 510 litres/m2/day using particle sizes 1.7 - 6.7 mm in columns measuring 5 cm dia × 126 cm long was used to study effects of interrupted irrigation ('rest' periods) on metal ion release and leaching bacteria. Copper tenors increased approximately 16 fold and bacterial iron oxidation activity three fold following a 14 day 'rest'. A linear relationship between copper tenor and bacterial activity demonstrated that this experimental system was effective for quantitative studies of bacterial leaching in ore colums.

On the basis of field observation, four principal styles of hydraulic breccia are recognised, and their characteristic features noted. In practice, hybrid styles are most commonly encountered. Numerous examples will be illustrated during the oral presentation, and the potential for definition of a formative environment is emphasised. In one example presented, it is suggested that more than 50 episodes of hydraulic fracturing can be recognised. In all cases at least sane useful conclusions can be drawn in the context of modeling for drill targets.

Responsible management of cyanide solutions and tailings on gold processing plants worldwide is an important aspect to these operations and is regulated via guidelines provided by the International Cyanide Management Code, an industry initiative designed to minimise cyanide risk to operators and the environment. Here we demonstrate the unprecedented causal relationships surrounding the saline (>14 000 mg/L total dissolved solids - TDS) and hypersaline (>50 000 mg/L TDS) cyanide solutions in gold plant tailings in the Central Goldfields of Western Australia, resulting in zero wildlife mortalities on three sites over the study period of almost one year. Wildlife interaction and ingestion is significantly lower than that experienced at other gold mine sites, with more rapid degradation of weak-acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide within the tailings storage facility (TSF). A rigorous chemical sampling using a novel æminimal accessÆ robotic sampler device and wildlife observation exercise was carried out at two hypersaline mine sites: Barrick Kanowna Belle (BKB) and Gold Fields St Ives (GSI) and one saline site, Barrick Granny Smith (BGS). The data was compared with available reported chemical sampling and wildlife observation data from a previously operational fresh water site (<2000 mg/L TDS) that had experienced wildlife mortalities, Case Study D (CSD). The comprehensive body of work, along with cyanide degradation test work carried out in the laboratory, was analysed via hypothesis development and testing, causation analysis and dynamic chemical modelling. The non-mortality effect on these sites appears to hold over a further four years of routine wildlife and cyanide monitoring by site personnel. FOR rapidly marking in geological and topographical features on parish plans, the author has used the Veeder cyclometer with very satisfactory results. A simple Veeder cyclometer, usually retailed at cycle depots at 4s., is fixed to the axle of the front wheel of an ordinary bicycle. The cyclometer is desigued to read in miles and tenths of miles, which are recorded through gearing actuated by a striker on a spoke of the bicycle wheel engaging one of the vanes of the cyclometer once every revolution.By using 80 strikers the reading would be in chains and tenths of chains; therefore the use of 8 strikers gives the reading in chains, utilizing all the figures. The cyclometer is designed to be placed on the right-hand side of the bicycle, and takes up a minimum of space, being only about the size of the top joint of the thumb. With some makes of cycles there is insufficient clearance, so the cyclometer must then be placed on the left side, and the 8 strikers made to engage the top vanes, as shown in the sketch (Fig. 1).Very accurate readings can be obtained by this instrument. At last year's. annual meeting of The Institute, Sir George Fisher, as President, compared it somewhat nostalgically with a meeting of its kind in the 1920s when comment was expressed on the decline of Australianmining and on the lack of new mineral discoveries.I feel that tonight's annual meeting is even more an occasion for nostalgia, for it represents the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. I hope, therefore, that I may be allowed to retrace some of the circumstances of this Institute's origin and at the same time to look at some of the broader happenings of those 75 years.From this distance in time it is, of course, much easier to get things in perspective and one of the things that compels enormous admiration in looking back over the history of our Institute is to note the qualities of foresight and keen concern for professional standards which moved the pioneers in this Institute. They had no benefit of hindsight to aid them.Just over 75 years ago, a small group of men met in Broken Hill to discus.s the possibilities of forming an association of mining engineers. The moving spirit was Uriah Dudley, our first secretary, manager of the Umberumberka mine at Silverton. The first formal move to form an association of mining engineers came from the Amalgamated Mining Managers Association of Australasia. At the time, this association was a fairly new group, being 5 years old.It had been formed to try to raise the standard of management throughout the industry. Uriah Dudley and our first provisional president, John Howell, held their first talks in 1891 and further meetings at Broken Hill followed. The inaugural meeting, attended by 200 members, was held in Adelaide in April, 1893.

New detailed mapping, micropalaeont- ology and isotopic dating have been successful in revising the stratigraphy of Woodlark Island. All Middle to Late Miocene intrusives and volcanic rocks have been assigned to the Okiduse Volcanics. In addition, the results demonstrate that the Tabukui beds and Wonai Hill beds (N9, late Early Miocene to earliest Middle Miocene) are a single unit. Similarly, the Nasai and Suloga Limestones are confirmed as a single stratigraphic unit as they yield similar foraminiferal ages (upper Te, Early Miocene), and both occur in the same stratigraphic position unconformably overlying basement Loluai Volcanics. Radiocarbon dating suggests a latest Pleistocene age for the upper Kiriwina Formation. Extensive Quaternary cover and low relief prevents detailed structural airphoto interpretation. In general, the structure is simple with all units on Woodlark dipping to the northwest a_4 exhibiting prominent local block faulting.

Various steps, and complete sequences, for the recovery of lead and zinc from a mixed sulphide concentrate, high in silica and pyrite, have been tested.Oxidation steps of roasting in air or in a sulphating atmosphere and use of aqueous acidic, ammoniacal, and near neutral oxidation media were compared. Oxidation roasting or use of acidic media appeared most useful. Procedures for dissolution of zinc from calcines using sulphuric and sulphurous acid to avoid silica gelation problems are compared and a direct leaching procedure with sulphuric 'acid at controlled pH shown to be the most useful.Methods for the removal of germanium, nickel, and magnesium from zinc sulphate solutions prior to zinc electrodeposition were tested. The recoveries of zinc from ammoniacal solutions by electrolysis and distillation are compared.The dissolution of lead compounds from the residue of zinc extraction by amine and ammoniacal ammonium sulphate (AAS) solutions Was tested. Lead, sulphide was precipitated in filtera'ble form from AAS solutions. The reduction of lead sulphate to lead sulphide with sulphur was difficult, but possible. The various steps were used to deveiop five complete processing sequences, of which two were shown to be technically feasible and have potential economic viability.

Using a cylindrical hydrocyclone with a long vortex finder as the separator, a batch sizer was developed for the fast comparative sizing of the coarse solids normally encountered in mineral pulps.Operating times as short as 2 or 3 min gave separations ranging from 16 mesh down to the subsieve sizes.Reproducibility was good and sensitivity was adequate for most applications.

Three large deposits of good quality lignite were located and delineated in the Central Otago region between October 1978 and July 1979. The program was initiated and funded by Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy as part of the national Coal Resource Survey. The exploration work was carried out by Lime and Marble Limited on a contract basis (Bowman, 1980). The three deposits were all potentially mineable by open cast methods and possessed combined indicated and, inferred reserves in the order of 1000 x 106 tonnes. They ranked with the previously discovered Eastern Southland 1ignites and as such constituted an important national energy resource. Fifteen months later a second more detailed investigation of similar duration was undertaken by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board (LFTB). The objective was to upgrade and refine the geological data base of all of the nine South Island 1ignite deposits in order to make preliminary economic assessments of their potential. Again Lime and Marble Limited acted as the exploration operator (Bowman, 1981a, 1981b, 1981c).

THE power requirements of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company at Queenstown, Tasmania, have, since the inception of smelting operations in June) 1896, been derived continuously from the extensive forests in the watershed of the Queen River, adjacent to the works, the fuewoodbeing of good quality, mainly composed of myrtle or beech (Fagus Ounninghami), eucalypts, and manuka (Leptospermum ericoides). The country is very rugged and mountainous, indented by numerous ravines and gullies, and intersected by, many creeks, which are subject to periodical floods, under the influence of a heavy and persistent rainfall, which averages about 110 in per annum. The areas so far exploited aggregate a total of about42 square miles, and this denuded country gives promise of ultimately becoming very valuable pastoral ground for cattle-raising. The mineralogy, textures, and genetic significance of a silver-rich siderite vein and an apparently co-genetic galena vein from the South mine, Broken Hill are discussed.Both veins cut sharply across the Main Lode Horizon and appear to be coeval with thc A.B.H. Consols lode.The minerals of thc siderite vein apparently result from the preferential leaching of silver from Main Lode Horizon ore with a demonstrable "breakdown series" commencing with tetrahedrite, passing through silver sulpho-salts, and ending with simple binary compounds or with elemental silver.The siderite vein has been deposited by metahydrothermal fluids along the lines of Schneiderhohn's "secondary hydrothermal" mineralization.

The main constituents of ferromanganese slags are silicates of Mn, Ca and AI. Factors affecting the recovery of manganese from a low manganese content ferromanganese slag (about 16 per cent MnO) during acid leaching were studied. These included time, temperature, agitation, sulphuric acid addition, solid:liquid ratio and particle size. Agitation rates greater than 300 rev/min. leaching periods greater than 30 min and temperatures above ambient were found to have no effect on Mn recovery. Dissolution of Mn was found to be highly dependent on the amount of acid added.About 90 per cent of the Mn was recovered when 5·5 times the stoichiometric amount of acid was used. About 28 per cent of the Mn was recovered when the stoichiometric quantity of acid (with respect to Mn alone) was used. However, the recovery increased to about 75 per cent when the total stoichiometric requirement of acid with respect to Ca, Al, Mg and Fe as well as Mn was used for leaching. The extent of Mn dissolution also depended on the particle size of the slag. The percentage of Mn recovery (using 5·5 times the stoichiometric amount of acid) increased from about 60 per cent to about 92 per cent when particle size decreased from -36 +52 to -150 +200 mesh (B.S.S.). When the results of this study were compared with those in a previous study involv,ing the leaching of a high manganese content slag (containing about 40 per cent MnO) results were similar except that there was a gr-eater consumption of acid in the present case (i.e. low manganese content slag).

In January 1994, Macraes Mining Company started a new phase of exploration to find additional resources along strike and down dip of identified resources for a mill that was being expanded from 2.1 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa. At 30th June 1997 a total of 456,784 m in 3,627 holes had been drilled at the Macraes Gold Project with approximately 325,000 m in 2,100 holes drilled in the latest phase of exploration. This necessitated the construction of resource estimates on a more frequent basis and resulted in the formation of a resource modelling team, assisted by Snowden of Perth. Since April 1995, 14 separate resource estimates have been completed. At Macraes, resource estimates are built using Medsystem/Minesight software. The geological interpretation is converted into a set of three dimensional wireframed solid models which are used to code drillhole composites and blocks in a block model. The interpolation method of indicator kriging is used to interpolate grade into the blocks. Classification into measured, indicated and inferred categories is on the basis of geological confidence and drill spacing. The resource estimate is reconciled against grade control polygonal estimates on a bench by bench basis and on a monthly basis. Grade control estimates are reconciled monthly to mill production. For the period 30 June 1995 to 30 June 1997, the resource estimates have under predicted tonnes by 4% and grade by 1% to under predict ounces by 5% at a 0.5g/t cut off. At ROM sulphide cutoff grade, the models have over predicted tonnes by 5%, under predicted grade by 5% to over predict ounces by 1%.

THE Wonthaggi coal-field lies south easterly from Melbourne at a distance by rail of 86 miles, on the flats of the Powlett River, immediately to the south of the deep-cut valleys and steep intervening ridges in the Jurassic rocks of the Bass Range and itsfoot-hills. The coal-bearing area is covered with a thin layer of late Tertiary and Recent deposits, which serve to mask the true character of the underlying coal-bearing rocks and effectually prevent the appearance of any coal outcrop. Two or three bores sunk prior to 1890 had shown the locality to be really a potential coal-bearing one. Only one additional bore was sunk in the State Coal Mine area until 1908, when energetic boring was resumed, with the result that in November, 1909, when an acute shortage of black coal in Victoria resulted from the prolonged strike on the New South Wales coal-fields, coal-seams had been located at Wonthaggi offering sufficient inducement to start an...

The size by size batch flotation behaviour of copper activated sphalerite from synthetic mixtures with quartz was determined. In terms of recovery of sphalerite, the size fractions could be grouped into coarse, intermediate, and fine ranges. The behaviour of the coarse and fine ranges was significantly poorer than that of the intermediate range in both the extent and rate of flotation.Each size fraction had a fast and a slow floating component.The main effect of changing the copper sulphate addition was to alter the proportion of any size fraction which was fast floating. No correlation could be found, between the amount of copper on the spha:lerite andeither the flotation rate of the mineral or the amount of copper added to the system. It was found that fine particles did not appear to consume greatly disproportionate amounts of copper sulphate during conditioning. A modified conditioning procedure was found to lead to a higher rate of flotation and recovery of coarse sphalerite and to make poss1ble substantial savings of copper sulphate.

The Cadia Hill Gold Mine, located near Orange in Central Western New South Wales, is owned and operated by Cadia Holdings Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited. Construction including pre-strip mining occurred from 1996 to 1998. The mine was officially opened in October 1998 following commissioning of the concentrator and mine fleet in June of that year. The Cadia Hill orebody is a porphyry related gold and copper system. The final pit has a strip ratio of approximately 1.3:1.0. Mining is undertaken on 15 metre benches using large capacity diesel hydraulic face shovels at an annualised rate of up to 70 Mtpa. The concentrator is currently rated at 17Mtpa and includes the worldÆs largest single line grinding circuit. The feasibility Mineral Resource was estimated at 352 Mt at 0.63 g/t Au and 0.17 per cent Cu. Initial reserves totalled 200 Mt at 0.74 g/t Au and 0.17 per cent Cu yielding a mine life of approximately 12 years. During the pre-production period mine geology systems were developed to support the operation. By design these systems were intended to add value to the business through minimisation of material miss-classification, provision of accurate and timely production information and mapping and reconciliation as a continuous model improvement tool. Variances that would prove to be material to the life of mine plan were recognised during the first year of production. These included identification of additional ore tonnes, higher copper grades and higher gold recoveries relative to the model. Gold grades and copper recoveries also reconciled favourably. Testwork was undertaken to determine the underlying causes of each variance. Re-modelling was then undertaken to capitalise on those variances. The Cadia Hill Gold Mine life of mine plan was re-evaluated with updated geology, grade, geotechnical, metallurgical and environmental inputs. Operating strategies were also reviewed and revised. Despite application of reduced metal prices in the evaluation, the outcome was one of extended mine life with more metal produced at lower cost. Development of robust mine geology systems, including a pro-active reconciliation process contributed to tangible improvement of the Cadia Hill Gold Mine operation. On-going system development and improvement initiatives are planned to add further value for the future.

As the mining landscape continues to transform, the challenge of accessing deeper orebodies quickly and safely is becoming a frequent topic of conversation amongst those in the mining industry. The rapid development of underground mine entries to gain earlier access to deeper orebodies is an ever-present challenge to mine owners and contractors. Overcoming this and providing economical solutions to unlock the value in these deeper deposits is a challenge that should be confronted.In 2013, Redpath Australia Pty Ltd (Redpath) commenced construction of what would be the first of two drifts excavated through the use of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.The excavation and development of the two drifts (declines) was completed as part of a contract for underground mining services between Redpath and Anglo American at the Grosvenor Coal Mine Project in Central Queensland, located approximately 5 km north of the town of Moranbah. Having recently completed the drift development, this paper will extend on the early writings of Donnelly, Ramage and Donghi (2014) and provide detail on the operational achievements, advance rates, threats, opportunities and learnings during the excavation of the two declines: the conveyor (CV) drift and the transport (M&M) drift.CITATION:Ramage, G, Donghi, M and Barnes, A, 2016.
