Automatic control of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills has often been considered complex. Recent experiences at Century Zinc (worldÆs second largest open pit zinc mine) refute this. Together with operating knowledge and appropriate control techniques high quality control is achievable. In this application model-based, constraint, and multiple output control were employed. The control was implemented using standard blocks in the plant DCS. The resulting overall control strategy fulfils the operating objectives and controls the mill with minimal operator involvement over 95 per cent of the time. Previous campaigns using expert systems and complex DCS based control have lacked durability. Their fall into disuse is briefly discussed.

A survey of selected West Coast Streams was undertaken in Summer 2001, Summer 2002 and Winter 2002 to establish the degree of arsenic (As) contamination in waters and sediments downstream of old coal and gold mine workings on the West Coast. Of the catchments studied, Soldiers/Ford Creek and Rapid Stream showed the most significant elevated As concentrations, predominantly in dissolved form, and evidence of AMD or ARD contamination (high sulfate concentrations and/or acidity). The rate and processes of removal of dissolved arsenic from the water column (attenuation) have been studied in these catchments. The Rapid Stream and Soldiers/Ford Creek catchments are directly affected by adit drainage from the Sullivan and Blackball coal mines respectively. Both catchments have high As concentrations in the sediments, with up to 770 mg/kg in Soldiers Creek and 490 mg/kg in Rapid Stream. Dissolved As concentrations are significantly elevated in the neutral pH waters of Soldiers Creek; typically as high as 100 - 200 ¦g/kg, up to 500 m downstream of the main adit discharge (800 ¦g/kg As). Adit inflows to Rapid Stream were acidic and contained 20 - 30 ¦g/kg dissolved As, with relatively high concentrations of arsenic in the stream water in winter (up to 18 ¦g/kg), but not in summer. Analysis of concentration trends and As:SO4 ratios downstream of these obvious As sources confirmed that dissolved As had been actively removed from the water column, but varied seasonally with greater removal evident in summer. Adsorption of arsenic onto iron oxide in the stream sediments is the most likely mechanism of removal. The Snowy River catchment, on the other hand, has relatively high As concentrations in both the sediments and the water column, but there was little evidence of a distinct AMD or ARD input from the Blackwater gold mining area. Preliminary investigation suggests that dilution rather than attenuation is responsible for decreasing As concentrations downstream.

In sampling a process stream, conventional sampling theory deals only with the variation of the analyte content and neglects the impact of the variation in the mass flow on the sampling variance, whether the sampling regime is time-based or mass-based. This is an obvious simplification of the real state of affairs and it is worthwhile to study this impact via simulation.With a facility to simulate large (long) random functions having some thousands of points in the function and the ability to impose covariance functions on the mass flow and analyte variations, such a study is possible. It is also possible to evaluate the impact of correlation between analyte content and mass flows.This paper describes a limited study of the variance increase due to mass flow fluctuations over the usual sampling variance due to analyte variation during the sampling period. The bias in the sampling result is determined for specific modes of correlation. Simulation methods are used as they are the only means by which a sampling result can be compared to the true assay for the lot; in the physical circumstances of mineral process analysis, it is never possible to determine the true process stream assay.CITATION:Lyman, G J, 2017. Infrastructure may be defined as anything necessary for the development and operation of a project, which is peripheral to the basic extraction, handling and processing of material. This paper uses the results of research trials by Landcare Research and Forest Research Institute and assessments of reclamation plantings at mines and other drastically disturbed sites to describe methods of enhancing restoration of native forests. The characteristics of mine and forest environments are compared to highlight the difficulties facing restoration and techniques which result in successful restoration are described. Selection of the most appropriate technique is illustrated by describing restoration of lowland beech-podocarp forest at a West Coast coal mine. The key to successful reclamation is to understand the factors controlling and limiting plant establishment and growth, then to design rooting media, surfaces and management regimes to create a favourable environment. This paper concludes with a summary of the planning and technical factors which are critical for successful restoration of native forest.

NATURE OF ORETHE Edna May ore consists mainly of clean quartz of a moderately hard and tough nature. The gold content is "free" and fairly coarse, so that a large percentage is recovered by amalgamation. The ore is practically free from metallic minerals.GENERAL OUTLINE OF PLANT AND TREATMENTThe ore, received from underground in trucks, is broken by a jaw breaker, then stamp-milled, follow~d by partial filie-grinding in pans. Mercury is used both in the mill boxes and pans. The pulp, on leaving the pans, passes over amalgamating tables and is then elevated by tailings pulp to cone classifiers and separated into a sand and slime product, each product receiving a separate cyanide treatment-sand by leaching in vats and slime by agitation and decantation in a "Trent" plant. Gold solutions from both sand and slime are precipitated together by zinc shavings in the usual type of precipitation boxes. Accumulated slime is trucked from the dam to a vortex mixer and from this point receives with the cement slime the same treatment.ORE BREAKING AND TRANSPORTThe ore is trucked from the brace of the shaft along an overhead line to the breaker station. When xanthates or dithiophosphates are used as collectors in sulphide ore flotation, adsorbed species may be identified by gas chromatography of the volatile products formed during low temperature pyrolysis. For collector additions ,as low as 20 g/tonne of ore, pyrolysis of the flotation products usually gives' an olefin directly related to the particular xanthate or Aerofloat reagent used. The method is able to provide valuable qualitative and quantitative data relating to the extent of collector adsorption and the resulting changes in the hydrophilic or hydrophobic nature of the mineral surface.

Mining companies in order to compete and succeed in being viable business propositions must look to the future and select mining methods which guarantee improved efficiency and productivity as well as lower costs. A mining company in adopting a method of mining must now select the equipment most compatible. To some mines compatible equipment may mean the use of drilling jumbos to replace hand held rock drills or the use of load haul dump units to replace scrapers. To other more mechanised mines compatible equipment may mean the use of raise borers and road heading machines. The right decision will be where equipment compliments method in such a way that the working environment is improved, productivity is maximised, cost if reduced and all profit opportunities are optimised. An example of such is where the use of improved mining techniques in underground operations may see cut off grades reduced. By selectively mining these lower grade orebodies, smaller operation's ore reserves improve and the capacity for continued growth is enhanced.

An investigation into the causes of variable sulphur content in blast furnace metal produced at No. 4 blast furnace at the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. was carried out. Theprogramme included an extended and detailed experimental study of a great number of the operating variables of the furnace, on a cast-bycast or four-hourly basis, over fourteen days.Possible causes of the variation were found in irregular operation due to sinter variability, and it was also clearly shown that slag conditions were most important in controlling sulphur contents of pigiron. Some decrease in sulphur variability was achieved, arising partly from this investigation, and it is hoped to try magnesia additions to modify slag conditions for better desulphurizing.INTRODUCTIONSulphur in pig iron is a problem common to many blast furnace operators throughout the world, but the direct causes and means of overcoming them are functions of the available raw materials, and are hence more particular to each plant and its operating practice. Sulphur in hot metal influences the steel-making operations, the rolling operations and the quality of the finished steel. The main problem associated with high sulphur in steel is "hot shortness", which leads to cracking of ingots and billets in rolling, to poor surface finish and to poor welding properties in the finished steel. Rheological Behaviour of Clay-Rich Gangue Mineral Dispersions During Hydrometallurgical Treatment Alumino-silicate minerals invariable may present an intractable challenge in hydrometallurgical operations employed in low grade nickel, copper and gold ore leaching or high level nuclear waste (HLNW) processing. The interactions and reactivity of alumino-silicate clay gangue minerals such as muscovite/sericite, chlorite, kaolinite and smectite under acidic (eg pH <3) or alkaline (pH >13) conditions can have a striking impact on the particle interactions. These may manifest in undesirable pulp rheology, poor extraction rates and challenges in the subsequent "handleability" and solid-liquid separation processes (eg dewatering). In the present work, a review of investigations involving the interfacial chemistry, interactions and rheological behaviour of aqueous dispersions of mica-group, layered alumino-silicate clay (muscovite / sericite) and chalcocite minerals as a function of pH in the range 2 - 9 and time at 25¦C, is presented. Particle zeta potential, reflecting interfacial chemistry, indicated a strong pH-history and particle volume fraction dependency. Pristine particles' zeta potentials measured from high to low pH indicated mineral-specific isoelectric point (iep) at pH range 2 - 5. Subsequent measurements from low to high pH showed pH-history dependency with iep shift to higher pH values, the extent of which also depended upon particle volume fraction and aging time. Pulp pH-mediated particle interactions revealed by shear yield stress analysis displayed a bifurcation behaviour and good compliance with DLVO theory. The maximum pulp yield values occurred at the iep whilst weak rheology was observed where the magnitude of the particle zeta potential was greatest. The pivotal role played by both pulp chemistry and suspension conditions in regulating the particle interactions and concomitant rheological behaviour is highlighted. The implications of the findings with regards to clay-base pulps' handleability and its control during aqueous processing are discussed.

An investigation on the breakage characteristics of closely sized orc samples at different levels of input energy was carried out to determine an appearance function for possible use in ball mill modelling. A consistent pattern of breakage behaviour was observed and the resultant size distributions could be described by a one-parameter, ('t'), family of curves. For each particle size range tested, this parameter 't' has an exponential relationship with input energy below an upper energy limit. A tentative linear relationship between the input energy at a constant value of 't' and the work-index leads to reconstruction of 'I' - input-energy curves from the work-index values. To normalise the efrect of particle size and input energy, multidimensional cubic spline regression was performed on thc entire range of data. The results indicated that the parameter 't' can be determined, reasonably accurately, as a function of Ln (input energy, kWh/tonne) and Ln (particle size, mm) for input energies between 0.5 and 8.0 kWh/tonne.

When the Mining Bill came before the Victorian Legislature not so many months ago, the question arose whether mining managers required education, and to what extent. Some members of the House expressed themselves in a way which appeared to leave the impression that mining managers would be all the better if they were not brought up in a scientific school.To try and prove what we owe to science I will give a short history of colonial mining from the earlier period to the present time and compare results.I believe I am right in saying that South Australia is the pioneer colony in mining and to her belongs the credit of not dnly being the first mining colony, but also that her beginning turned out so successful, as the history of the Burra Burra copper mine will testify. At about the same time a little galena mining was carried on nearer to Adelaide, but as this did not prove a success and was only worked by tributing parties, little notice was taken of it.

Geophysical signatures of the Taranaki and Tongariro volcanoes reflect similarities in their age, composition and hydrothermal histories, but also reflect differences in host rock settings and edifice evolution. The Taranaki volcanoes have strong positive gravity anomalies showing that their edifices largely consist of dense andesite which reflects substantial lava production or dyke injection during construction and that large sub-edifice dyke/stock complexes occur. In contrast, the Tongariro volcanoes have strong negative gravity anomalies indicating low density edifices of volcaniclastic material; no sub-edifice intrusions can be identified, probably because of the lack of density contrast with host basement rocks. Strong positive magnetic anomalies over the younger cones can mainly be attributed to near-surface andesite lavas or dykes whereas subdued magnetic effects are associated with hydrothermally altered zones within both edifices and sub-edifice intrusions.

The main objective of this work was to develop, at a laboratory scale, a process for treating residues from the settling stage of water treatment so as to remove and recover the aluminium as sulphate. The chemical analysis of residues from different water treatment plants indicated that the aluminium content varied from 15 to 20 per cent w/w. By using the appropriate experimental conditions, it was found to be possible to leach most of the aluminium content. The pH value of the recovered water was suitable for it to be recycled to the water treatment process and the residue appears to be suitable as raw material for bricks. The process developed contributes to the sustainability of the water treatment process.

Interest in the tantalum-niobium minerals has been greatly stimulated in Western Australia by the fact that these rare minerals occur at numerous localities in that State, and in the adjoining parts of the Northern Territory, sometimes in mineable concentrations, as at Wodgina and Greenbushes. A large proportion of the world's tantalum comes from these deposits. The late Dr. E. S. Simpson, in particular, made an extensive study of the chemistry and mineralogy of these minerals, and the following observations are based upon the examination of specimens which he and Mr. H. Bawley, Government Mineralogist of Western Australia, have submitted to me for examination from time to time. The fact that so many of the specimens have been analysed provides a unique opportunity for the interpretation of the phenomena observed in the polished sections.TANTALITE-COLUMBITE SERIESIt has long been considered, on the basis of crystallographic form, chemical analyses, and specific gravity measurements, that ferrotantalite (FeO. Taz05), manganotantalite (MnO. Taz05)' ferrocolumbite (FeO. Nbz0 5), and manganocolumbite (MnO. Nbz0 5 ) form a complete isomorphous solid solution series (Simpson, 1937) and this is confirmed by study of polished sections of these minerals, Pehrman (1929) examined a series of five analysed specimens with Nbz0 5 contents as follows:-

A massive cobalt-containing pyrite orebody occurs in banded albite-quartz-biotite rocks at Thackaringa, some 30 km SW of Broken Hill. Because of the world-wide shortage of cobalt during the late 1970s, serious consideration was given to the development of a suitable flow-sheet to recover the cobalt from this ore. Details of a pressure leaching process in which more than 90 per cent of the cobalt is extracted from a pyrite concentrate are presented.

Characterising ores in-pit and in real-time presents a significant value opportunity for the mining industry. Hyperspectral imaging systems are proposed as an enabling technology to achieve this real-time characterisation. This paper considers the application of a hyperspectral imaging spectrometer mounted on a shovel. We define the performance requirements for such a spectrometer and associated subsystems during a typical dig-load cycle. The relatively high swing rotation speed of the shovel requires approximately video-rate exposure times to achieve good spatial resolution. We analyse a selection of components against these requirements and find that suitable commercial spectrometers, detectors and optics appear fit-for-purpose. Automated, real-time spectral classification systems are also available, with only relatively modest requirements for processing power. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Big Gossan mine is operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and is one of the largest stope-and-fill mining systems in the world. The Big Gossan deposit is a ~200 m wide, 1200 m long and 500 m high steeply north-east-dipping to subvertical skarn body at the Cretaceous-Tertiary Ekmai-Waripi contact. The copper-gold mineralisation, with a 1.3 per cent copper equivalent cut-off grade, occurs mainly proximal to the Ekmai-Waripi contact in the garnet-clinopyroxene prograde skarn at the base of the Tertiary Waripi formation and partly distal to the contact in the tremolite-actinolite retrograde skarn of the Tertiary Waripi formation.The Big Gossan stope mine is designed from 2540 m to 3020 m above sea level. Present active stoping operations occur at level 2540 mL to level 2640 mL and are done in a primary and secondary stoping sequence. The width and length of the stopes is 15 m and 20 m respectively, while the height of the stope varies between 20 m and 40 m, depending on the ground conditions. The stability of the stopes is visualised in the Mathew’s Stope Stability graphs. These graphs and actual Cavity Measurement Scanner measurements on the stope will predict and show the overbreak and underbreak, which affect the reconciliation of the mined stope and also the pillar stability between the primary stopes.
