The notes from which this paper has been prepared were set down at the time of the author's departure from Australia in 1935. Mr. Frank Forman, Government Geologist of Western Australia, who has very kindly read the paper in manuscript, affirms that the views here set forth are now accepted by most geologists. Thus, Forman's recent presidential address before the Royal Society of Western Australia (1937) mentions sediments in the Kalgoorlie Series "including banded jaspers and jaspilites."While it may, therefore, be superfluous to belabour the question further at this time, Mr. Forman has encouraged the author to publish this paper as a summary or both past and present views.To those specially interested in the subject of the paper, a study of pertinent Plates attached to Western Australian Geological Survey Bulletin No. 71, 1917, is suggested.The type of rock which is variously called "jasper bar," jaspilite, or "ferruginous quartzite" is familiar to all mining men who have worked in the West Australian goldfields.In its typical form it is a "striped" rock consisting of alternate layers of white or pinkish silica with red to brown bands of iron-bearing silica.In the course of geological work in many parts of Western Australia I studied exposures of jasper bar and was repeatedly impressed with the similarity of much of the material to the sedimentary "banded iron formation" of Canada. It was, therefore, a surprise to learn that the jasper bars were not generally regarded in Australia as sedimentary horizons. In the Bendigo district, with its large number of comparitively small leases worked by separate companies, we might naturally expect to find many different arrangements of winding machinery and, as a matter of fact, there are steam winches, old portable engines, single and duplex geared engines, twin engines on the first motion, and in one instance a single engine on the first motion, all employed for hauling purposes from depths of 1000 feet and over.It would be impossible in the compass of this paper to discuss at all fully the various arrangements of winding gear employed on the field the writer can simply refer to some of the more prominent features, in the hope that the information may prove of interest and benefit to the mining community. In criticising our machinery it must be remembered that when many of the plants in use at the present time were erected, they were not intended to wind from more than one third of the depths now common on the field; but so long as the machine could be made to haul a tank of water from the bottom of the shaft it has remained, the greater power required being obtained by increasing the piston speed and altering the gear wheels to suit. The consequence is, of course, that in some of our mines the speed of winding is painfully slow this feature, however, though certainly not consistent with modern ideas of economical mining, does not so seriously affect Bendigo as it would other fields, for the comparatively small quantity of stone to be raised from a given reef by some...

This paper discusses the methods used in the design of flotation plants, including benchscale batch and locked cycle tests and pilot plant trials. Two case studies are presented, one for the Cadia Hill Gold Mine and the other for the Hellyer copper, zinc and lead plant. These case studies present different problems with widely different target grind sizes, liberation characteristics and HellyerÆs sequential flotation circuit versus CadiaÆs æsimpleÆ copper/gold flotation circuit. They have a common theme in that pyrite forms the principal floatable concentrate diluent. Hellyer ore contains finely disseminated chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, and tetrahedrite. The flotation plant design was based on extensive benchscale testwork (including locked cycle tests) on drill core and many months of operation of a 30 tonne per hour æpilot plantÆ, using the old Cleveland Tin Mine process plant suitably modified for the duty. The Cadia concentrator was designed on an extensive benchscale variability testwork program, approximately a dozen locked cycle tests conducted on drill core and two weeks of continuous pilot plant trials on three separate samples obtained from an adit into the orebody. The orebody is a monzonite porphyry with disseminated chalcopyrite/bornite/pyrite of very low grade (0.17 per cent Cu, 0.73 g/t Au). Methods used to establish the appropriate flotation circuits for the treatment of the Hellyer and Cadia ores, as well as the interpretation of the testwork data, are discussed in this paper. Plant performance is reviewed in the context of predicted versus operational performance.

With the advent of the resources boom in the late 1960s most of the larger scale resources projects in Australasia were commissioned on an æowner miningÆ basis, where the mine owners owned and operated the primary mining equipment. Then, in the 1980s with the arrival of the gold mining boom in Western Australia and elsewhere, a change occurred û most of the mining activities were carried out on a contract mining basis. Over recent years, however, there has been a marked trend amongst larger Australasian open pit mining operations back towards owner-controlled and operated mining operations. The reasons for this are many and are addressed in the paper, but centre on the concept of the owner being prepared to assume more of the mining risk in exchange for the advantage of not having to pay a contractorÆs profit margin. Where mining contracts are entered into, the older æschedule of ratesÆ format is being replaced with less adversarial and more entrepreneurial contract alternatives involving operating cost and risk sharing in a spirit of æfair dealingÆ. Leasing and maintenance issues have also been influenced in recent years by the advent of more flexible contract arrangements with equipment suppliers. Group purchasing has also had some influence for project operators. For many mine owners, the optimal risk management profile involves a practical offsetting of the assumption of mining risk on the one hand, against the removal of litigation risk and potentially reduced operating costs on the other. Potential pitfalls may arise where equipment size and type requirements vary with time or where manpower management, mining flexibility, job skills or safety exposure factors are relevant. These issues are commented on in the context of some well known examples, and an update is provided on contract mining versus owner operation in large scale Australasian open pit mining generally.

Ore from Henderson’s 7700 Southwest panel cave is transported between the production and truck haulage levels through a series of orepasses. A typical orepass complex consolidates dump points from four production drifts into two long bored raises feeding into a single truckloading chute. The system typically covers a vertical extent of 200 m and a lateral extent of 90 m. In the process of commissioning several initial orepass complexes, challenges with preferential draw in the long bored raises were observed. Preferential draw occurs when one long orepass mobilises much sooner and/or flows significantly faster than the other orepass. This has negative implications for orepass availability in the production drifts. As future mining at Henderson relies on the construction and use of such orepass systems, the development of appropriate design criteria and practical solutions to existing flow problems was necessary.A series of PFC3D numerical models were developed to assist in identifying the factors influencing preferential draw and possible corrective measures. The models helped to identify two primary factors that caused the preferential effect: the relative elevation of the brow at the bottom of each long bored raise, and the location of the bin used to funnel fragmented rock from both raises into the chute. This paper covers the initial design of the orepass complexes at Henderson, results of the numerical models, mitigation work done to date on existing orepass complexes, and design criteria for future construction.CITATION:Gresham, J and Turichshev, A, 2016. Declining metal prices over the last few years have reduced the number of new metallurgical plants being built and limited opportunities for introducing new processes. However, technological advances are still being made. With increasing economic pressures, the emphasis is now on reducing unit costs by making equipment larger and through use of technologies with lower operating costs. This trend can be seen in the increasing size of grinding mills and flotation cells used in recent plant designs and in the adoption of HPGR crushing as an alternative to SAG milling. Few new technologies achieve widespread introduction until there are clear economic or operational drivers. These might currently include: ò          increasingly stringent environmental standards; ò          availability of exotic materials for equipment construction; ò          increasingly sophisticated instrumentation and control systems; ò          the need to treat increasingly refractory oretypes; and ò          the length of supply routes to many new plants. As a result of these drivers, a number of new and revitalised technologies will get increasing prominence in the design of new operations, such as: ò          use of ultrafine milling equipment such as MIM's Isamill for treatment of refractory gold ore concentrates; ò          use of thiourea as an alternative for cyanide in sensitive locations; ò          novel hydrometallurgical routes for treating base metal ores in remote locations; ò          paste thickening for tailings deposition; and intensive cyanidation of gravity concentrate

Wastewaters from Mining Projects both gold mining and coal mining generally have minerals in solution or very fine material which does not settle out quickly. These waters in the past have been discharged into the nearest water course and caused extensive pollution.

Grinding Mill Operation and Maintenance - Central to Asset Management Since 2005, RME has pursued a vision for a new grinding plant operational paradigm, made possible by RME's latest Mill Relining Systems. At some sites, new liners degrade SAG mill performance. The variables include mill volume loss, rotational speed limitations (ball strike) and liner designs developed for longer and longer life but without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences of whole plant performance. Freshly relined mills can initially deliver as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the liners' wear life. RME's proposition is to see new liners designed for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent mill relines but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance, not maximum life. In other words, mill liner profiles and relining speed become key profitability contributors and not simply 'must do' maintenance functions and costs. This paper includes a short history of RME's Mill Relining System development (Appendix A). These are the enabling technologies which permit more frequent liner exchange without incurring additional downtime imposts. The body of this paper outlines RME's vision of a 'liner profile vs. profitability' commercial model, underpinned by the rigour of PAS 55-1:2008 Asset Management Part 1: Specification for the optimised management of physical assets. The technical elements can be developed either intuitively (based on plant experience) or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum technical solution for the maximum commercial outcome. Much of this can be modelled off-line, in the virtual world, before asking senior management to commit to an expensive liner experiment. The potential benefits are compelling.

Mining is a major global industry that requires the moving of considerable volumes of earth and rock (overburden) to win the valuable ore prior to mineral extraction and processing. As a result of this process, new landscapes are created, both extracted voids and overburden piles, as well as infrastructure for management of mine operations, wastewater, tailings, other raw materials, transportation and extreme rainfall events. Resource companies must develop and obtain regulatory approval for detailed plans that manage this displaced material through all phases of the life-of-mine and rehabilitate the site at the time of closure (including landform stability, revegetation and ongoing management).Individual mine sites operate in long time frames (ten to 50 years), with several mines often operating in the same region, generating cumulative overburden volumes and heavily altering the original landscape. These impacts are universally framed as a negative consequence of the industry, especially by modern society that values natural (and some agricultural) landscapes as pristine and almost sacred. Overburden and tailings are also seen as a problem, and are a significant business cost to mining practice.This paper looks to investigate perceptions of mining and post-mining landscapes, questioning the aesthetically driven emphasis on the ‘natural’. It proposes instead an opportunity to reframe the way we look at overburden and landscape impacts from mining, exploring the possibility of imagined post-mine landscapes unburdened by traditional aesthetic expectations. These landscapes, to be conceived by regional stakeholder roundtables, have the capacity to be built by regional mining consortia as a foundation for sustainable post-mining economies.Post-mine regeneration offers both the motivation and the basic materials to create an altogether new environment from a blank slate. The Northparkes E26 Mine is AustraliaÆs first block cave mine. This paper presents an outline of the design and construction philosophies that drove the project development and details the excavation, ground support and construction methods used. Features of the block caving method at Northparkes include:high production rates from multiple drawpoints;hard blocky ore fractured along gypsum veins; andloading/unloading of openings due to mining induced stresses.The drawpoints are subjected to high abrasion from the flow of ore, as well as impact from both secondary blasting and from the production LHDs. In order to withstand these harsh conditions and to ensure a low maintenance environment, a conservative approach to ground support was taken. The experiences gained during construction are discussed and whether the design expectations have been achieved. By installing a high level of ground support during excavation of the openings subject to mining stresses, a low maintenance environment has been constructed. Operating costs are therefore minimised and Northparkes E26 Mine continues to produce at the lowest cost per tonne of all Australian underground mines.

Abundance data are presented for a comprehensive range of elements in oil shale samples from deposits located in Queensland. The techniques of instrumental neutron activation analysis and spark source mass spectrometry were used to obtain concentration data for up to 50 trace elements in each shale. These techniques were supplemented by other spectrometric methods to obtain data for major, minor and some trace elements. Sixty-four elements were determined quantitatively. This comprehensive characterisation of oil shale samples from the major deposits in Australia provides inorganic abundance data not previously available. It also provides important background information for processing studies and the associated environmental aspects of shale oil production and waste disposal.

The Reefton Goldfield has produced 67 t of gold from mesothermal vein gold deposits in metasedimentary rocks of the Greenland Group (Cambrian-Ordovician). The Globe-Progress deposit contributed 13.2 t (418,000 oz) of this total, predominantly from quartz veins. Recently a resource of 14 Mt at 1.96 g/t Au (27.5 t or 882,300 oz of contained gold) has been delineated at Globe-Progress in quartz vein remnants and disseminated within adjacent sedimentary rock, much of which has been locally brecciated. The breccias consist of quartz vein and sedimentary wall rock fragments set in a matrix of clay ærock flourÆ and sulphide (arsenopyrite plus minor pyrite and stibnite). Gold, closely associated with sulphide, is disseminated within the breccia. Disseminated gold also occurs in massive siltstone and sandstone adjacent to the quartz veins and breccias. Exploration drilling at Globe-Pogress, and several other Reefton prospects (e.g. Capleston, Merrijigs, Big River and Alexander River), has intersected zones of disseminated arsenopyrite carrying up to 20 g/t more gold. These mineralised sediments commonly have little or no megascopic quartz and or carbonate veining. There is little visible indication of former primary or secondary permeability for the passage of hydrothermal fluid and deposition of gold. However, porosity and permeability were formerly present in inter-granular pore spaces and microveinlets now filled with quartz, carbonate and K-mica. The Fosterville gold deposit in Victoria bears many similarities to the Globe-Progress deposit at Reefton, in terms of age, host rocks, hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation style. Many ofthe disseminated deposits in Nova Scotia, including deposits at North Brookfield and Moose River (Touquoy Zone), have similar characteristics to the Reefton disseminated mineralisation, but commonly have abundant pyrrhotite and some deposits have disseminated metal alloy grains of complex metallurgy.

Today computers are accepted as a standard item in industry and they perform a variety of tasks over a wide spectrum of activities from mine planning and CAD to data processing and spreadsheet work. However many problems particularly in the. area of decision making where there are no clear mathematical models available and usually the output or answer is dependent to some extent on a heuristic approach, don't lend themselves to conventional solutions using standard procedural algorithms. Recently a number of techniques have evolved primarily from the enhanced capabilities of modem equipment, which are capable of solving these problems. This paper is a brief overview of these rather unconventional developments of computer technology in the area of artificial intelligence with reference to their application in mining.

Syria has about 500 million ton deposit of minerals having 34 per cent iron content with alumina and silica as major impurities. Efforts were made to see the feasibility of concentration by four different methods involving washing, high intensity magnetic separation, reduction roasting and magnetic separation and acid leaching technique. It was observed that the reduction roasting with magnetic separation yields a concentrate with high iron (62.3 per cent) content without requiring water which is a scarce raw material in the region. The paper concludes that the detailed study may be made following this route to optimise the process Parameters.

"Modern train load out stations are becoming faster and have the ability to load a 100 wagon train in less than three hours. At 70 metric tonnes per wagon, that is an average fill rate of 2333 t/h and considering the train is continuously moving, the instantaneous feed rate into the wagon is in the region of 4200 t/h.The main feed conveyor that maintains the level in the surge hopper, above the final weigh hopper, operates in excess of 5000 t/h to ensure uninterrupted charging of the weigh hopper to not disrupt the train loading operation.To avoid demurrage costs (a charge by the Rail Operating Company for exceeding the contractually agreed loading time) the train has to be handled speedily and efficiently and spend the absolute minimum time at the loading facility. Everything else has a much lower priority, including sampling.Thermo Fisher Scientific’s brief was an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract to provide a sampling scheme adjacent to the prepurchased and predesigned load-out facility, but which interfaced seamlessly with the loading system of the trains and provided the following: an instantaneous particle size distribution (PSD) result for each truck loaded, and a final PSD for the total train prior to the train leaving the loading facility a crushed (-3 mm) composite sample for chemical analysis for the whole train a composite physical analysis sample for the whole train.The design presented some interesting challenges to our team, but the end result is a system that not only ‘stands alone’ but interfaces seamlessly with the loading system. Owing to improvements in computer capacity, it is now possible to undertake fully coupled or partially coupled, three-dimensional (3D) hydromechanical Finite Element (FE) simulation of mines, including explicit representations of large numbers of discontinuities. The analysis requires fewer assumptions than uncoupled analysis or two-dimensional (2D) analysis, but may require a change in how hydrological data is collected. The way hydrological data is incorporated in stability assessment and the approach to uncertainty in hydrological information also requires discussion. The current procedures for this type of analysis are discussed, along with some practical difficulties and teachings from early applications. A work flow for integration of 3D hydromechanical modelling with pit planning and some considerations for the management of uncertain data are also proposed.

Best practice gold (Au) recovery is not an accident. It is the result of proper operation of the adsorption circuit using good quality activated carbon. A conventional carbon ‘regeneration’ kiln cannot process carbon fouled with floatation chemicals and achieve best practice gold recovery. A high temperature, controlled atmosphere carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln is required. Carbon circuit design allows for low quality carbon by increasing the carbon advance rate, carbon inventory and setting an easily achieved and commercially prudent solution tails target of typically 0.02 ppm Au. These design criteria are important to ensure the commercial success of the gold operation in the first instance. Most carbon ‘regeneration’ kilns will produce carbon of sufficient quality to achieve a 0.02 ppm Au solution tail in the absence of flotation reagents.Best practice recovery is considered less than 0.005 ppm Au in solution reporting to tails. If the carbon is heavily fouled, as it will be if used for flotation leach circuits, then a conventional carbon ‘regeneration’ kiln cannot achieve world’s best practice recovery no matter how much carbon is advanced. World’s best practice gold recovery requires a carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln and the whole of the carbon circuit operated optimally.The competing reactions occurring in a carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln are presented and discussed in terms of kiln design and operation. New industrial and laboratory findings are presented to fill gaps in the body of knowledge and identify that a large reduction in residence time at temperature will not significantly impair reactivation, but can significantly reduce the size and cost of the kiln or permit significantly increased carbon throughput.The carbon circuit performance is modelled in terms of gold adsorption, as a function of carbon reactivation using ‘simulation of carbon-in-leach/carbon-in-pulp circuits’ (SIMCIL). An optimum carbon advance rate is identified as a function of optimum carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln operation to achieve 0.005 ppm Au in the tails solution. Antimony ore samples (mean assay 18·7 per cent antimony) from Endeavour Inlet, Marlborough Sounds New Zealand, were tested for upgrading by flotation to a saleable product (60 per cent antimony).The effects of activating agents, collectors, frothers, pH, conditioning time, and particle size on the recovery and grade of a stibnite flotation concentrate were determined using HaIlimond tube and laboratory flotationcell test apparatus. Optimum flotation conditions for the ore were thereby established. A stibnite concentrate grading 63 per cent antimony and an overall recovery of 90 per cent is obtainable in a two-stage process.
