One key to maintaining successful mining operations in today?s global economy is in having the ability to access real-time machine operating data ([1] G. Brown, B. Ebacher, W. Koellner,2000)([2] Brochure of Siemens E&A, Order Number 141000-1). With recent and ongoing advances in mining equipment systems it is imperative that mine managers have full knowledge of the status of their equipment at any given point in time. This knowledge is critical to ensuring that the productivity of each and every machine is maximized. Knowledge of machine status is only the first step, however, in controlling and optimizing a piece of mining equipment. Computer based diagnostic systems, traditionally offered on mining equipment, have provided a link for collecting data and trouble-shooting problems as they occur. One problem existed, though, that those systems stopped short of providing full drive systems access. A maintenance technician could see the data but to make critical adjustments or make repairs the technician needed to be on the machine. In extreme cases the machine would be down until OEM assistance could reach the mine site. The key then to reducing down-time and maximizing machine productivity was creating a system that could not only monitor drive systems but also provide remote access to those systems. Essentially a link needed to be created through which a technician could gain drive access remotely then make adjustments or repairs without being on the piece of equipment. This paper will introduce AccessDirectTM, a new remote diagnostic system for Bucyrus mining shovels and draglines. AccessDirectTM combines all three important elements of remote diagnostics: ? Vital Signs and Production Monitoring (SiRAS-M) ? Automatic analysis (SiRAS-A) of faults, and tracking of trends for preventive and reliability centered maintenance , and ? Fast, direct Intervention (SiRAS ? I) for troubleshooting support, repairs, and system optimization.

"The Key Lake mill was commissioned in 1983 to process the two Key Lake ore deposits. With the depletion of these ore bodies in 1999, the plant was converted to mill the exceptionally rich McArthur River deposit located seventy eight kilometers northeast of the Key Lake mine site. This paper describes in detail the Key Lake milling process. The mill consists of a grinding circuit, a leachkounter current decantation circuit, a solvent extraction circuit, a yellowcake precipitatiodcalciner circuit, an ammonium sulphate crystallization circuit, and a waste treatment circuit. The mill was designed to produce twelve million pounds of uranium oxide (U308) a year from a feed grade of 2.4% U3O8.Following grinding, the uranium is leached in a two stage leach circuit using oxygen and sulphuric acid. An eight-thickener counter current decantation (CCD) circuit is used to separate the uranium bearing solution from the solid waste residue. The uranium is further purified in a solvent extraction circuit and then precipitated using ammonia. It is then calcined at 840' Celsius, and packaged into drums for shipping to refineries. There is a crystallization circuit to recover ammonium sulphate produced in the process and a waste treatment circuit."

Online analysis of metal content can be used to optimise the grade and recovery of a flotation circuit. Compared to conventional laboratory analyses, the benefit of an online analyser is the speed of the measurement, therefore disturbances (eg changes in feed grade and decrease in recovery) can be reacted to in real time by an operator or automatic process control system. In some cases traditional X-ray fluorescence analysers can be applied to silica analysis in iron ore when the SiO2 grades are high enough and have a negative correlation with iron; however, generally a laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyser is more suitable for low Z elements.The Outotec Courier 8® analyser is a LIBS based analyser able to measure elements starting from lithium (Z = 3), thus being able to measure impurities; eg silica and aluminium directly in iron ore slurries. Besides online elemental analysis, the analyser can be combined with optical measurements for rapid continuous measurement of each sample line. "In preparation for the milling of a new nickel and copper mine ore, Nickel Rim South, Xstrata’s Strathcona Mill is undertaking numerous process improvement projects. Within the grinding circuit, several projects are under development and an automated grinding control strategy, consistent with the operating objectives, was identified as a key requirement. The grinding strategy is to maximize the throughput (quantitative objective) while maintaining the cyclone overflow within specifications (qualitative objective).This paper describes the implementation of a robust grinding control strategy using the existing control system. The implemented controls maintain the cyclone overflow density at the desired target, while continually optimising the rod mill feed rate to allow maximum throughput. This approach has the added benefit of improving the stability of the rougher flotation circuit down stream of the grinding and improving energy efficiency of the rod and primary ball mills. This paper discusses the comparison of the before and after the implementation of results.INTRODUCTIONThe grinding process is a size reduction operation used in the mining industry to liberate the valuable minerals from the gangue. Grinding is one of the most important and expensive processes in a concentrator (Xi-song, 2007; Pomerleau 2000; Najim 1995), often accounting for around half of the total operating costs in base metal concentrators (Wills, 1990), which has led to a focus on development and implementation of control and optimisation strategies. The grinding process prepares the ore for the subsequent concentration step, which for sulphide base metal operations, is predominantly flotation. The performance of the concentration (flotation) is very much determined by the feed characteristics of the slurry coming from grinding. The valuable minerals recovery process in flotation is very much influenced by the grinding process and the liberation of the desired minerals from the gangue minerals (McIvor, 1991).The true objective of grinding is to obtain a proper liberation of the minerals as defined by a particle size distribution referenced typically by d80 (80% passing size of product). Besides achieving the desired mineral d80 size, it is clearly desirable to produce as narrow a size distribution as possible to squeeze the maximum amount of the mineral value into the highest recovery region (McIvor, 1991). This is an important criterion for the mill in economically optimizing the grade and recovery for the concentrate product. It is important not to over or under grind, while keeping the specific comminution energy as low as possible (Nunez, 2005) to achieve the target liberation. In other words, maintain an optimal throughput depending on the ore conditions to the capacity of the grinding mills, while providing the flotation process with a constant and narrow size distribution, at a cut size selected to meet the metallurgical requirements (Bascur, 1991)."

The Government's policy with respect to Crown owned minerals is for continuing investment in prospecting, exploration and mining which is in accordance with good exploration or mining practice. To encourage continued investment requires a business-friendly environment. Government policies and initiatives to enhance the business environment for the minerals and coal exploration and mining industries are discussed in this paper. As well, new initiatives under consideration, which have the purpose of enhancing the investment environment, are discussed.

The production of metallic titanium and titanium-rich alloys in forms useful to the engineer involves the use of certain techniques not usually necessary in fabricating the commoner metals and alloys. However, not all stages in the handling and shaping of titanium-base materials require the application of unfamiliar methods. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate where the well-known techniques are applicable as well as to outline the unusual operations which are necessitated by certain chemical characteristics of titanium.In brief, the characteristics just mentioned are manifestations of the very great reactivity of titanium, especially at elevated temperatures. Liquid titanium burns vigorously when brought into contact with air. It also reacts with practically all refractories, causing damage to the latter as well as undesirable contamination of the metal. Even solid titanium undergoes serious superficial contamination when heated above 800°C. in air for more than a few minutes. In addition to an oxide skin being formed, oxygen enters into solid solution in the surface of the metal causing the latter to become hardened and eventually embrittled.Up to date, titanium has been made only on a pilot plant scale by methods which produce a spongy or powdered product. Refractory problems have prevented the development of chemical reduction methods for making titanium in the form of a liquid pool from which ingots of useful size could be cast. NZ Steel's flushing slag typically contains 1.2 per cent V203. Extraction of vanadium from powdered slag using a salt (NaCI or Na2CO3) roast/leach process was investigated. With NaCl, optimum extraction conditions were a charge containing 10 per cent NaCI, roasting in air at 875°C for 4 hours, followed by leaching in dilute H2SO4. Extractions were typically 30-50 per cent. NaCI roasting did not chemically attack the slag; the phase transformations that occurred were due to high temperature oxidation. Slag particle size had a significant effect on extraction.Optimum conditions for extracting vanadium by Na2C03 roasting were 20 per cent Na2CO3 in the charge and roasting in air for 3-4 hours at 850-875°C followed by water leaching.Na2CO3 roasting involved chemical attack that resulted in the formation of perovskite (CaTiO3) and carnegieite (NaAISiO4).The extent of vanadium extraction depended on the amount of Na2CO3 added and the original slag SiO2 content.Compared to the separate roasting treatments, simultaneous treatment with NaCI and Na2CO3 gave lower vanadium extraction, while requiring considerably higher roasting times and temperatures.

This report by the Bureau of Mines is the first of two proposed papers on evaluation of spectrophotometric, spectrographic, polarographic, and other analytical methods for quantitatively determining impurities in high-purity tungsten. Some of the methods described are standard methods that have been successfully applied to determine low-level impurities, several are modifications of known methods, and some procedures are entirely original. The Bureau of Mines is actively engaged in tungsten research because tungsten has an extremely high melting point, in fact the highest of any known metal. The metallurgist must know the content of impurities in tungsten because of the marked effects even micro amounts of impurity elements have on its physical properties. The Bureau procured a number of analyzed samples of above-average purity from research laboratories of companies engaged in production and fabrication of tungsten. These samples were investigated by the analytical procedures of those companies for several metallic impurities. Subsequent analytical laboratory determination of impurities in these samples agreed with the analyses as reported. With this assurance that analytical methods were basically accurate for metallic impurities, procedures for the determination of several of these elements were modified to lower the limits of detection and increase the sensitivity of methods. Carbon and the gases hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen were determined by standard instrumental methods, modified to provide greater sensitivity for reliable determinations when content of these elements was low. After the reliability of the modified procedures was affirmed, they were used as a product evaluation guide in the development of a vapor-plating technique for the production of high-purity tungsten. The following list of elements can be determined by one or more of these methods: AI, B, Be, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, S1, Sn, Ti, V, and Zn. In addition, a vacuum-fusion method for the determination of H, N, and 0, and a conductometric method for carbon are described. In the latter part of the 1980s Outokumpu Chrome in Tornio, Finland, was in a situation when its twenty-year-old ferrochrome plant was becoming too inefficient to sustain economically sound production. The company made extensive studies on the then available processing methods to find out the best possible processing route. As a result, the whole plant was practically rebuilt and expanded. When equipment was proven in practical operation, an application for FeMn production was developed. Now as the Tornio FeCr-plant is considering expansion, the same type of exercise is to be performed with today?s challenges, which will be discussed in the paper. These challenges include increasing costs or decreasing quality of raw materials, increasing energy costs, stricter environmental regulations and demand for better working conditions. The possibilities of resolving to these challenges will be discussed in the paper. The future and continuing development with FeCr includes the better utilization of process dusts and a lower consumption of energy. By adapting the latest automation tools to better control the process, even higher efficiencies can be achieved with present technology. New processes are considered for development in the future and some possible technologies will be described.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, sulphur, SO2, off-gas, Zimplats Zimplats embarked on an off-gas sampling campaign in December 2009 to characterise the concentration of SO2 in the off-gas from their 13 MW furnace. In excess of forty isokinetic samples (US EPA Method 8) were taken over seven days. The aim of the sampling campaign was to increase the understanding of factors that influence sulphur release from sulphide concentrates in an electric furnace. Specifically, detailed monitoring was conducted over various operating conditions to evaluate: ? The relationship between SO2 and feed rate (i.e. furnace power) ? The relationship between SO2 and ingress (i.e. furnace freeboard pressure) ? The impact of concentrate bed thickness on SO2 (i.e. blacktop) ? The effect of events such as tapping and converter slag return on SO2 ? The desulphurization reactions that take place in the blacktop A model was developed to predict the SO2 content in furnace off-gas for a particular set of operating conditions. In order to evaluate the impact of random, uncorrelated changes in concentrate composition, ingress and power (feed rate) on the SO2 content of the off-gas, a Monte Carlo approach was adopted whereby concentrate composition, power, and ingress were allowed to vary randomly around selected set-points. The model is primarily based on the release of ?labile? sulphur from the partial thermal dissociation of sulphide minerals with an over-stoichiometric sulphur content (e.g., Fe7S8 decomposition to FeS and S). The main findings of this work suggest that labile sulphur does not fully account for the measured SO2 content of the off-gas, and that limited oxidation of sulphides during melting also contributes to the SO2 content. Details of sulphide oxidation reactions in the furnace remain unclear, and it is currently not possible to provide a theoretical framework for the relationship between the extent of oxidation and variables such as temperature, gas composition, particle size, and residence time in the furnace black top. Through the use of the Monte Carlo model it was, however, possible to constrain the extent of sulphide oxidation to about 1%. This work has shown in practice what was expected in concept, that SO2 in off-gas is proportional to furnace power and ingress rate. The model that was developed consistently slightly under-predicts the quantity of SO2 generated. It also highlights that more work is required to better understand the analytical methods used to analyse for SO2 in off-gas.

The transport of large boulders in a furrow from a mining area to a nearby pond was considered. The furrow is filled with a mixture of water and soil particles flowing down to the pond at high velocity. Due to operating constraints, the slope of the furrow is reduced progressively. A relationship is derived, relating the slope of the furrow and the composition of the fluid to the maximum size and shape of the transported boulders. The characteristics of the boulders carried all the way down to the pond may then be determined.

I had the opportunity recently to visit a magazine site of a major explosives company. It was fun to see the storage areas again and it was really interesting to see one of the old magazines that probably dated back before my time. Now that’s an old one. As son Tom says, “When Dad was young the Dead Sea was just sick.” While the magazine has been upgraded with a modern lock to match today’s standards it still has the old tumbler lock that is opened with the large bronze key. Those old tumbler locks were just about standard on magazines years ago. Those bronze keys were heavy and would make a good display item today or maybe a substitute for a blackjack. I don’t think the old locks would stop the modern criminal but then in those days we were all less sophisticated. And maybe I shouldn’t say this but honesty was a bit more prevalent then. Maybe ‘cause old fashioned police brutality still prevailed.

India does not possess any soluble potash reserves and depends completely on imports. In this study, an attempt has been made to recover potash (K) values from the mica sample employing thermal and mechanical routes followed by leaching. Direct leaching of mica in different lixiviants is found to be ineffective with very low K-dissolution (1–5%). Heat treatment with different fluxes, such as NaCl, NaOH, and CaCl2, is carried out and almost 85% K-values are recovered. Mechanical activation of mica and with different calcium additives is carried out to recover potash values. K is recovered in leach solution in the form of soluble salts, such as K2CO3, K2SO4, and KOH, and leach residue consists mainly of calcium-alumino-silicates. Using mechanical activation with flux, it is possible to recover >95% K-values from mica sample. Mechanical activation with calcium-based flux is found sustainable in the recovery of K-values from mica.

Lumwana is an open pit Copper mine located in the Northwestern Province of Zambia approximately 80 km west from the provincial capital of Solwezi, approximately 300 km northwest from the Copperbelt and 700 km northwest from the national capital of Lusaka. The mine has two major Copper deposits: Malundwe and Chimiwungo. Copper mineralization includes Chalcopyrite, Bornite and Chalcocite. In addition to Copper, these deposits also contain the undesirable element Uranium contained in vein hosted and disseminated Uranite. The processing plant was designed using conventional technologies: semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill for grinding, and mechanical cells for rougher and cleaner flotation. Soon after commissioning in early 2009, it was recognised that two stages of conventional cleaning were unable to produce plant final Copper concentrates with the desired Uranium grades. Studies have shown that a significant quantity of liberated and fine Uranium particles (up to 80-90%) is recovered with the concentrate by entrainment. Lumwana Operations sought the use of the Jameson Cell technology after observing successful implementation at other sites in rectifying similar issues. In late 2009, Jameson Cell pilot-plant test work was conducted at the site and this quickly led to the installation of a full-scale B5400/18 model into the existing cleaner circuit. Inclusion of the Jameson Cell resulted in the plant being able to effectively produce clean and saleable concentrate with Uranium contents consistently below acceptable levels. Initially designed to be used as a cleaner scalper cell at the head of the existing conventional cell circuit, subsequent operational issues with the existing recleaner cells forced reconfiguration of the cleaner circuit and reintroduced the Jameson Cell for the recleaning duty. This paper reports the Lumwana Operation from the first two years of operation where it struggled to produce a saleable concentrate with Uranium grades below 150 ppm, which is the maximum allowable limit set out in the smelting contracts, to steps taken in the subsequent years to implement a satisfactory solution. The plant can now consistently produce a clean Copper concentrate with Uranium grades well below 130 ppm and the overall improvements implemented at site have seen the overall plant recovery improve by 1.3%.

This paper presents part of the outcomes of the drill and blast optimization project carried out at Kisladag Gold Mine in Turkey. Kisladag Gold Mine is the largest gold mine in Turkey with a low-grade, bulk-tonnage, open pit operation that uses heap leaching for gold recovery. After blasting, the ore is fed to a three-stage crushing circuit which prepares crushed ore approximately -10 mm (0.39 in) for heap leaching. Crusher downtime analysis showed that blocky material and insufficient feed are causing significant downtimes with the primary crusher. This was supported by the fragmentation data collected to date. It was decided to initiate a fragmentation project to understand the variation in the run-of-mine (ROM) size with a view to provide a consistent feed to the crushing circuit. The study includes the analyses of the ore strength and structure, image analysis of the fragmentation pictures acquired from blasts, blast auditing and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) analyses. During this project, over 200 fragmentation pictures were acquired from 47 blasts to optimize ore and waste blasts. Ore strength varies between 30 and 120 MPa and rock quality designation (RQD) ranges between 30 and 100. A site-specific fragmentation model was used to calibrate the fragmentation for blast domains formed. In addition, alternative cases were simulated to achieve blasts designs with consistent ROM fragmentation size distribution. Alternative blast designs that include stemming length and powder factor changes were suggested. Long stemming length, drill cuttings use, free faced blasts, small shot sizes and poor stemming length control were some of the key issues causing coarse fragmentation.

The Coal Mining Engineering Branch of the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Mineral Resources, in its continuing effort to improve coal recovery from underground coal mining operations, has undertaken a study of the mechanics of sub-surface deformation caused by caving of the extracted area behind retreating longwall faces. The strata movement was monitored by a multi-wire borehole instrumentation system consisting of mechanical anchors installed at different horizons in a borehole extending from the surface to the coal seam. The mechanical anchors were connected to the suspended weights on the surface by stainless steel multi-strand wires. The movement of these weights was monitored as the longwall face approached and retreated past the borehole. The anchors started subsiding as soon as the face retreated past the borehole and continued to subside until the subsidence levelled off when the face retreated 900 m past the borehole. The zone of major caving and bed separation extended to roughly 10 to 13 times the extracted seam thickness and high tensile strains developed inthis zone. The bulking factor of broken strata was less than 1.14 which indicated that the roof layers collapsed in big blocks. The goaf compaction was almost complete when the face retreat was 200 m. Low tensile strains prevailed in the strata overlying the zone of caving and bed separation.
