The management and control of hazardous gases released into the underground environment are an integral part of coal mining. The power-generations stations at Appin and Tower collieries, with a combined electrical output of 94 MW, have been operating for some time and have demonstrated a technology that is able to exploit the available gas fully. Contributory factors have been the development and introduction of directional drilling techniques, pre- and post-drainage of coal, relatively high seam permeability, a high gas content of the worked seam, high production rates and a willingness to embrace new ideas and technology

A survey and critical appraisal of published information about Young's modulus was originally made by the writer because of a complete lack of information about this very important quantity in works on. mechanics, physical metallurgy, physics, and other sciences. It was felt that a comprehensive summary of such information about Young's modulus might be of general interest and may suggest new problems or lines of attack on other problems that involve E. Hence this paper has been prepared even though it is only a review, with no new ideas or experimental data. The references are only those used in assembling the paper. No attempt was made to compile a complete bibliography on the subject of Young's modulus. The earliest calculations were probably those of Tomlenson (1883) and Souther-land (1891), but Fess'enden4',~ made extensive calculations a few years later and arrived at the relationship: £ = 78.TOw(i)* where V is the atomic volume. In 1923, Peczalski, working from the same standpoint but with more information available on atomic structure, arrived at an identical relationship, which he expressed as: where B is a constant of value about 8 . 107, p is density and mis atomic weight; the atomic volume, of course, being ml p. Portevind4 immediately pointcd out that while the equations of Fessenden and Peczalski were true of the common metals, they gave low values for the refractory metals with high moduli (Fig. I). He showed (Fig. 2) that much better concordance was obtained by means of an empirical equation of the form: F- KT" where K is a constant; T the absolute melting point; V, atomic volume, and a and b constants of value approximately I and 2 respectively. This constant K in the Portevin equation is not necessarily the same for all elements, as shown by Thompson. Other equations for E based upon theoretical considerations have been derived by Honda and Yamada49 and Lasareff.50 The most recent calculations of elastic moduli based upon quantum mechanics are probably those of Fuchs He extended the method of Wigner and Seitz for calculating the lattice energy and compressibility of monovalent metals and computed the elastic constants of lithium, 18

A relatively inexpensive, very fast response photo-optic/fiberoptic system has been conceived, constructed and employed by Denver Research Institute (DRI) to measure charge breakout uniformity on the surface of a very large ANFO detonation. The new equipment and technique was coined OWL (observation without leads). Its unique design provides the ability to monitor or measure detonation velocities and/or detonation breakout characteristics without fiberoptic or any other direct contact with the explosive. This system has proven to be versatile and has been used to measure surface breakout simultaneity on large ANFO detonations, munition case breakout times and velocity of detonation (VOD).

A1though the expanding Eltran1 configuration has been used in induced polarization exploration for several years, there has been little application of this method to straight resistivity problems. A comparison of results of resistivity exploration by this technique versus those obtained from Wenner configuration surveys reveals a number of advantages in interpretative resolution as well as in field operation. The application of electrical resistivity to ground-water exploration is well known.= In the past a major portion of this work has been accomplished by use of one or more variations of a technique employing the Wenner3 electrode configuration. With the introduction of the frequency domain technique of induced polarization measurements, used primarily in the exploration for disseminated sulfide deposits, there arose the need for an electrode configuration by which potentials could be measured externally to the current electrode spread in order to minimize coupling between current sending and potential receiving circuits. It was also deemed desirable that the configuration would provide information laterally along profile as well as with depth. To reach these objectives the expanding dipole-dipole configuration (which probably first was used in the electrical transient method of exploration and from which the name 'Eltran' was derived) has been adapted to induced polarization exploration. A cooperative project between the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, and the Montana School of Mines, investigating results of hydraulic systems for transporting sand slurries for emplacement, was begun in August 1955. In such circumstances, the Bureau provides funds for a fellowship leading to a Master of Science degree as well as available instruments, tools, supplies and equipment. The School provides the ore-beneficiating laboratory with its equipment for use as a pilot plant. The success of a hydraulic backfilling method employing mill tailings depends largely upon the physical characteristics of the tailings. One of these characteristics is size distribution, especially in the finer size ranges. When being emplaced underground, almost impervious layers of slimes separate from some types of mill tailings containing a high percentage of slimes and settle on the top of the sand fill. These coatings may be so dense that the water in the slurry cannot percolate through them for proper drainage. Successive layers of fill in a stope, each with an impervious coating on top, sometimes build up a hydrostatic head, creating pressure on the bulkheads. This may cause breaks in the lining material, inducing sand runs and flooding the level and sumps below. Deleterious slimes flocculated and disseminated throughout the sands should help prevent the formation of impervious slime layers, increasing percolation and settling rates.

"A commitment to a core testing, plant modeling and reconciling technique has shown substantial economic benefits to IOC in terms of accurate production forecasting, smoother operation of the mill, improved expectations of throughput and co-operation across production departments from geology, planning, mining, and processing, to shipping of concentrate to market.This paper describes a successful seven year program of forecasting throughput of the autogenous milling circuit at the Carol Lake concentrator of IOC. Work started with audits of the grinding circuit in 2001 and benchmarking of the data collected from samples of mill feed and plant operation to the CEET mill design and throughput forecasting model.Initially 390 drill core samples were tested for SAG Power Index (SPI) to measure the energy required in milling, and the data distributed using a geostatistical technique across the two operating pits, so that hardness was estimated in each of the 40,000 blocks (or 1500 million tons) of potential ore. In 2004 a forecast of energy requirement, i.e. forecast of throughput for a given power availability at the mill, was produced for each ore block using the CEET model and used for mine planning to smooth plant throughput. The forecast for blocks mined on a monthly basis was reconciled with plant results over the next 2 years and minor changes made to the CEET model. The forecasting exercise was repeated in 2006 and in 2008 with the latest model based on the testing of almost 1300 samples of drill core at closer spacing.INTRODUCTIONThe contracting of sales to clients and the timely supply of products to meet those contracts is a cornerstone of good business practice. Ensuring the correct scheduling of production is a major concern of mining companies where the supply and qualities of the raw material is uncertain and production facilities are not flexible. This is particularly challenging when the product is of high volume and produced far from the customer, such as iron ore.Apart from the metal content of the ore being mined, the greatest impact on production scheduling is the throughput of the comminution section of the extraction plant; most notably when size reduction is achieved by autogenous grinding. The response of the mills to variability in the hardness of the ore can change throughput by as much as 50% from day to day at some plants."

Associated with the development of a novel microbiological oxidation process for the conditioning of iron hydroxide slurries from ferrous mine waters, there is a realistic chance to make the contained iron available for a material utilization. The transformation of ferrous into ferric compounds is coupled with the precipitation of iron hydroxisulphate mostly in terms of the mineral Schwert-mannite. The further treatment of the iron hydroxisulphate has to be aimed on the processing for product recovery and product refinement. For many potential applications, e.g. in the ceramic industry, the pigment industry or for metallurgical applications, the removal of sulphate is essential. For the dehydration of the iron hydroxisulphate and the sulphate removal, microwave heating technology is a beneficial method. In contrast to conventional thermal heating processes the supply of energy in microwave application takes place directly within the material through the dissipation of electromagnetic energy, i.e. no heating medium is needed. It is a volumetric heating process regardless of the surface of the material. The rapid and targeted energy supply and the good controllability of microwave heating systems are advantages which have led to a wide variety of applications in industrial processes. Among the diverse use for heating of temperature-sensitive, chemical and pharmaceutical products as well as foodstuffs the number of applications also in mineral and solid processing increases. At the Department for Mechanical Process Engineering and Solids Processing of the Technical University Berlin the use of microwave technology for the treatment of iron hydroxisulphates has been investigated systematically within the framework of a cooperative research project. The paper at hand shows results from material conversion tests subject to a variation of the relevant process parameters. The reaction products are characterized and the process is compared with the conventional heating in a rotary kiln.

The 1967 Lignite Symposium was held at Grand Forks, N. Dak., on April 27-28, 1967. This was the fifth of these technical meetings and the fourth which was cosponsored by the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Mines. These symposia have provided a meeting place where current developments concerning technology and utilization of solid fuels (lignite) are presented. There was a registration of 255 persons from 24 States, the District of Columbia, six Canadian Provinces, Germany, and India. Many segments of coal or energy oriented organizations at many levels were represented. During the meeting, 18 presentations were made covering developments in electrical power generation, mining, estimation of reserves, combustion, gasification, and chemical and speciality uses of low-rank coals; these are com-piled in this Information Circular to provide a record of the symposium and to permit wider dissemination of the information. Proceedings of the other meetings have also been published.3

ABSTRACT The correlations between froth recovery of coal and air recovery were investigated using a hybrid mechanical flotation column. The particle slurry was fed onto the surface of air-water two phase froths to carry out the tests. Froth recovery was taken as the recovery of particles into the froth product, whereas air recovery was determined by the froth height method. The relationships between froth recovery and air recovery were nearly linear, with greater slopes for more hydrophobic particles. Inside the froth phase, the particles were stratified, with hydrophobic particles concentrated in the upper region and hydrophilic particles in the lower region.

A casual reading of the geological literature extant to-day would give one the impression that carbon is an element which by some chance or another always existed at or near the surface of the earth, and was never of a magmatic origin. The carbonaceous matter in shales is said to be of vegetal derivation; petroleum is stated to have been derived from vegetable matter or from marine animal bodies; if carbon or bituminous matter is found in igneous rocks or associated with metallic ores, the statement is made that deeply buried carbonaceous sedimentaries were undoubtedly the source from which such carbon or bituminous matter was derived. This, I do not consider a reasonable or common sense view of the matter. Carbon is one of the elements of which the earth is composed. In the table giving the periodicity of the elements it comes sixth in the order of increasing atomic weights. It is an element formed like all the rest were formed, and must be as common to the interior of the earth as the rest of the eighty-odd elements so far discovered. The spectroscopic analysis of light from the sun, and the stars, shows the presence of carbon in the sun and in the colder stars. Thus with carbon, an element, found throughout the universe as well as on the earth, it is entirely reasonable to consider it as present in the interior of the earth with the other elements. Such being the case, the magmatic origin for the various forms of carbon in rocks and ores is a rational and logical conclusion. If but a small fraction of thought and effort was made along these lines, which is made in fostering the idea of the organic origin of the carbon found in the earth's crust, untold advances in this phase of geological science would result.

WHEN the writer resided at Zeehan, qn the West Coast of Tasmania, some years ago, he took a keen interest in the geology of the district and availed himself of the opportunity to investigate occurrences, of the varied minerals in which the field abounds. The following notes were compiled as a result of one of his periodical visits to the outlying mining districts, when an examination was made of the bindsay Reward tin mining property, which has an area of 140 acres. This is most easily reached from Renison Bell, the centre of the North Dundas tin-fields, on the Emu Bay railway, 'about' eight miles north east of Zeehan. Thence a pack track some 14 -miles long connects with the mine, crossing the Piemah River by a fine suspension bridge.The mine itself is situated on the main south leading spot of the Parson's Hood Range, at an altitude of some 1600 ft. above sea level. The Parson's Hood Range is composed of granite and is an extension of the rugged Meredith Range. A remarkable feature is the uniform topography of the surrounding country when viewed from the peaks. Except where dissected by the rivers and creeks, the surface is practically level and, indeed, affords a striking illustration of an ancient uplifted peneplain.The mine has been opened by means of trenches and adits, and the ore-body proved to extend for a length of 30 chains, with an average width of about 100 ft. Its general trend is west-north-west, and its dip, which is steep, corresponds to that of the country-rocks. These latter, which are of sedimentary origin and generally regarded as of pre-Silurian age, have been tilted at high angles, consequent, no doubt, on the crustal movements produced by the intrusion of the huge granitic masses which now form the high ranges in the vicinity.It may be here remarked that it is not Within the scope of this paper to deal with the sequence of events leading to the geological structure...

"Autoclaves were first used in the metallurgical industry in 1893 to recover alumina from bauxite. In the 1940s and 1950s, several high temperature and pressure processes were invented in the laboratory of Professor Frank Forward at The University of British Columbia, in parallel with advances in equipment and processes by the Chemical Construction Corporation. Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited enlisted these groups to help develop the nickel sulfide ammonia leach process that was commercialized in 1954. Autoclave processes that have since been commercialized include high-pressure acid leaching of laterites, zinc pressure leaching, and pressure oxidation of refractory gold feedstocks. They are used in metallurgical refineries throughout the world to take advantage of the increased reaction kinetics and different reaction products that can be obtained in aqueous systems above the boiling temperature at atmospheric pressure. The word autoclave comes from the French “auto” and the Latin “clavis” and literally means self-locking—that is, the core distinguishing feature of an autoclave is that it includes a means for pressure regulation (e.g., a pressure relief valve). Denis Papin (Figure 1a), one of the inventors of the steam engine, was the first to make use of a safety valve to control steam pressure. He is credited with inventing the autoclave in 1679. Papin’s “digester” (Figure 1b) was a type of pressure cooker that was originally used to liquefy bones. Most commercial autoclaves are horizontal, multicompartment vessels with mechanical agitation, as shown in Figure 2a; however, the steam-agitated Pachuca vessels used to leach laterite ore in Moa, Cuba (Figure 2b), are also classified as autoclaves according to the self-locking definition provided above."

It is proposed that a waste rock dump be constructed on slopes consisting of soft colluvium and weathered Chim Formation mudstone at the Porgera Gold Mine, in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG). Geolog- ical, geomorphological and geophysical investigations were conducted in support of geotechnical studies to assess the physical character of the 6km2 site. Geomorphological studies focused on the extent and nature of colluvium cover and landslide activity. Detailed ground traverse mapping resulted in classification and delineation of eight terrains and seven material types. Seismic refraction and resistivity profiling, combined with drilling, provided subsurface data. Results were presented as standard profiles, coloured contoured sections and plans. Subsurface features, including deep colluvial channels, buried cliffs, slump blocks and buried alluvial channels, were identified. Results of the combined investigations allowed designers to model the colluvium/ bedrock surface and identify critical areas of deep, mobile colluvium and weak bedrock. A design approach was developed which accounted for the morphology of landslide systems and distribution of colluvium types.

The effects of solutes on the distribution of two-dimensional configurations of grains in zone-refined tin have been studied. When solutes with partition coefficients (ko) greater than unity are added, three-sided pains become more prevalent and the growth law changes. It is shown by electron-Probe micro-analysis that a solute buildup occurs ahead of a moving grain boundary when ko > 1. It has been found recently1, 2 that solutes with partition coefficients greater than unity have a larger retarding effect on grain growth than solutes with k, less than unity. ko is defined as the ratio of the concentration of solute in the solid to the concentration of solute in the liquid with which the solid is in equilibrium. Niessen and winegard2 have suggested that this effect is probably due to the complex shape changes which occur during the process of grain growth and that no theory based on single boundary motion3-5 can explain the results. They suggested that the dissociation of the unstable fourfold junction was delayed in alloys where ko was greater than 1 because the boundaries at the junction had to move into a region of high solute concentration. If indeed this mechanism were correct, it was felt that not only would the dissociation of fourfold junctions be affected by the solute buildup ahead of the boundaries, but the collapse of three-sided grains would be impaired. These combined effects would naturally lead to a modification in the distribution of the number of sides per grain seen on a two-dimensional section. The present investigation was undertaken to test these hypotheses by examining the grain-growth process in detail. EXPERIMENTS The Distribution of Grain Configurations in Zone-Refined Tin as Seen on a Two-Dimensional Section. Following the method of Bolling and Winegard,6 zone-refined tin was cast into button-shaped specimens and, subsequently, plastically deformed under a drop hammer at room temperature. The resulting flat coin-shaped samples were annealed at 200°C, some for 50 sec and others for 100 sec. The specimens were then examined to determine the distribution of the number of sides per grain, i.e., the num- ber of crystals adjacent to any particular grain in the section. For simplicity, the grains were classified as three-sided, four-sided, and so forth; this concept is schematically illustrated in Fig. 1. As indicated by smith,' it was necessary to examine every grain within an enclosed area to obtain a proper distribution of the relative frequency of each type. This summary of State laws on explosives wag compiled primarily to ascertain what subjects relating to their control have been acted upon by each State legislature and, in general, how they have been treated. It does not Include any legislation passed after 1942, or any proclamations, regulations, or administrative orders. It does not purport or attempt to be authoritative. If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State, the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature. This summary, however, will be useful in determining whether relevant statutes exist, and in locating them quickly, with a minimum of effort. It will be of value also in comparing statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of these jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a similar subject. To make these comparisons easier, the statutory provisions for each State have been grouped under several major topics in outline form. Although this sometimes has resulted in disruption of the continuity of individual acts, the increased general clarity and availability of comparable sections have more than justified the procedure followed.

"Data will be produced from two uranium feasibility studies that were conducted in 2008, both involving uranium recovery from leached slurry by resin-in-pulp (RIP) with strong base resins. Excellent metallurgical results were produced in RIP pilot plants in both studies, and the loaded resins were eluted with strong sulphuric acid and recycled to RIP in an integrated process. Resin losses by either abrasion or mechanical breakage were immeasurably low.Metallurgical results from these two campaigns will be presented, along with an economic analysis of RIP versus the alternative process of CCD or filtration and solvent extraction.INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of uranium directly from pulp with strong base resins in RIP contactors was practiced commercially in the USA in the 1960s, but the process never established itself as a viable alternative to solid/liquid separation and solvent extraction. This was due mainly to the necessity to do a sand-slime separation partially resulting from the unavailability of coarse resin beads, inadequacies in the design of the RIP contactors and screens to separate resin from pulp, as well as problems with the strength and durability of resins in agitated pulps.There have been significant advances in the last 30 years in each of these areas. All the commercial resin manufacturers are now producing very tough, durable, strong base resins, and are manufacturing them in a large bead size that is better suited to RIP applications. In addition, with the emergence and wide spread implementation of the carbon in pulp process in the gold industry in the 1980s, many innovative techniques for preparing leached slurries and separating carbon from pulp have become firmly established. These techniques have proven to be equally applicable to resin separation from pulps in RIP contactors."

Much progress has been made in understanding the forward process for blast vibration simulation: that is, how to create a resultant seismogram from an empirically determined seed waveform. What has not been successfully investigated to date is the reverse process: Determining the contribution of each borehole to the resultant seismogram. It might seem that these should be two sides of the same coin, but the reverse process is much more complicated. That is because the source, geological path, and receiver contributions must be unraveled and then dissected. If that can be done, a relationship can be developed between the seismic source properties and the explosive interaction with the surrounding rock. This paper presents a first step in the unraveling process, through analysis of blast seismograms using wavelet transforms.

The silver deposits of Rockvale near Armidale, N.S.W., occur in fissure veins in epi-Permian granite. The ore is fine grained, mineralogically complex, and contains twenty-seven different minerals including eleven silver minerals. The ore is characterized by a unique multiple unmixing from a sphalerite solvent. The following minerals have exsolved from solid solution in sphalerite: pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite I, cubanite II (chalcopyrrhotite), valleriite, "brown" stannite, "olive" stannite, argentian tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, and an unknown grey-white mineral. Several of these minerals derive from a second-stage unmixing, the immediate solvents of which are the products of earlier exsolutions.INTRODUCTIONSmall silver-rich base metal deposits occur at several localities near Armidale in the New England district of New South Wales. Chief among these are the Tulloch Mine and the Rockvale Mine at Rockvale, 27 miles SE. of Armidale, and the Tait's Gulley deposits some 15 miles NE. of Armidale.At Rockvale (Kenny, 1928), irregular lenses of lode material, principally quartz and calcite, occur along a zone of shearing in biotite granite and altered sediments. The orebodies had a maximum width of 6 ft but averaged 2 ft 6 in. The largest lens was 150 ft long and 50 ft high. The Rockvale deposits were worked for both arsenic and silver; 2,897 tons of arsenic were produced but no figures are available forsilver.Little is known of the Tait's Gulley deposits which occur in folded arenites containing small but rich veins of pyrargyrite with base metal sulphides.The sediments in these localities are possibly Silurian.

Introduction It is believed that the present paper will be of some interest, not because of any outstanding features of Renabie milling practice but because Renabie is the first gold mining property in a newly explored area - in Leeson and Rennie townships, Sudbury district, Ontario - to reach the production stage. The Renabie mill was originally designed by the General Engineering Company (Canada), Limited, as a 300-ton plant and went into operation in June, 1947, treating an average of only 128 tons a day for the balance of that year. Toward the end of 1948 the capacity of the plant was expanded to 450 tons a day, and the tonnage treated was gradually increased from the 1947 figure to the point where 420 tons a day was averaged for the first nine months of 1949. Description of Ore In general, the outstanding gangue component of Renabie ore is white quartz, which comprises at least 80 per cent of its total bulk and in some sections considerably more. Virtually all the gold occurs in very finely divided state; only very rarely has free gold coarser than 325 mesh been observed. The ore has a very low sulphide content, ranging from about 0.50 to 1.00 per cent by weight. The gold occurs both free in the gangue and ? locked in sulphides, the proportion of one to the other varying considerably from one orebody to the other. Pyrite is by far the most abundant sulphide, followed by galena, which, however, appears to be entirely absent in some of the orebodies. Minor amounts of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and sphalerite have been noted. The ore appears to be entirely free, or almost so, of minerals containing arsenic, antimony, or molybdenum, and in general it could be described as free milling. The various hindrances to extraction of the gold which have been met with are believed to be due largely to the very finely divided state of the metal and to its intimate association with the sulphides and gangue. The ore contains silver, with the gold-silver ratio about 3:1.
