Transformational roasting involves the heating of a material along with specific additives to induce mineralogical changes in the starting material. By controlling the chemical composition, roasting atmosphere, temperature and time of reaction, the mineral transformations induced during roasting can be engineered to control the distribution of valuable, or harmful, metals and to produce new mineral assemblages that are more amenable to conventional methods of metals recovery or to environmentally safe disposal. To date, this type of process has only been applied to the recovery of a limited number of metals, but current research is looking to expand the application of these techniques to the recovery of metals from a wider range of materials. An introduction to these techniques is presented along with preliminary results from their application to metals recovery from zinc bearing wastes, such as zinc ferrite leach residues and carbon steel electric arc furnace dust.

Several recent tunnel jobs have required special adaptations of hard rock TBMs. Some of the special job conditions are ?no blast? launch requirements, small shafts or launch pits, proximity to existing underground structures, and short tunnels where the TBM must be retrieved through the primary lining. This paper describes a few of these projects, and the machine adaptations that have made TBM excavation feasible.

For those blasthole applications which require the use of holes ranging from 1” to 5.5” in diameter, the use of top hammer drills has been the equipment of choice for several generations of drillers. Pneumatic compressed air and hydraulic compressed oil systems represent the primary technologies which are available to the drilling practitioner. While both employ the same operating principals, the characteristics of performance, cost, and reliability can be markedly different between technologies and manufacturers.

Most engineers, mine operators, or contractors acknowledge the importance of having accurate subsurface information in order to plan a project or solve a problem. Conventional methods of exploring the subsurface such as augering, core borings, or test pits can provide information, but it is often costly and sparse. Geophysical methods offer an alternative to help supplement sparse information~ gathered through conventional exploration techniques.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, did a linear analysis for a new underground coal mine in Grant County, WV, through the interpretation of LANDSAT imagery and high-altitude, color-infrared aerial photography, to identify areas of potentially unstable roof in advance of mining. The Bureau of Mines included this mine in its ongoing study of the correlation between geologic features and linears. Three years after the analysis, after mining had progressed through the plotted linears, a cooperative Bureau-MSHA study evaluated the effectiveness of the linear plot in predicting areas of unstable roof and defined the geology associated with the linears. Adverse roof conditions at this mine include roof falls, potted-out roof, water inflow, and local areas requiring supplemental support. At the time of this study, 34 pct of the mine workings were within 200 ft of a plotted linear. Fifty percent of the adverse roof area in the mine occurred within this area. The primary geologic anomaly associated with the linears is an increased frequency of jointing. The majority of the plotted linears coincide with the prominent joint orientations. Additional features observed in the linear zones include roof rolls and a sandstone channel that cuts into the coal seam.

After the global financial crisis of 2008, African mining is entering anew phase of development. The rapid withdrawal of emerging market funding from the critical exploration and development industries provided a hiatus in funding, a gap which was quickly filled by Chinese and other Asian investors. While the continent is still economically dependent on its extractive industries, the prevalence of Dutch Disease has undermined Africa?s ability to benefit fully from its mining, oil, and gas industries. While the extractive industries are closely related to many of the more fragile and failed states in Africa, it is equally true that the strongest states in Africa have mining-based economies. This paper explores the possible linkages between mining, strong and weak political economies, and poverty in Africa. It draws the conclusion that neither Dutch Disease nor Resource Course is a given in resource-endowed countries, and that it can be avoided if the mining economies in these countries are actively integrated into their respective broader economies and used to foster economic diversification. The author asserts that given the capacity constraints of many African governments, it is contingent on mining companies to become integrally involved in catalysing diversification around their infrastructure and supply chains.

AMONG the multifarious duties which fall to the lot of a mining engineer it is safe to say that there is none of more fundamental importance than the study of the ore-deposits on which it is thefunction of his profession to operate, inasmuch as the whole business of mining in all its complicated ramifications rests first of all on the existence of something to mine. -When the ore supplies in a mine fail, the enterprise comes to- an end, and nothing, therefore, is of more importance than a thorough understanding of the conditions under which the ore occurs, so that everything possible may be done to open up the mines well ahead of their immediate output requirements, and develop new ore reserves to take the place of that which is raised from day to day. The great aim which the mining engineer has to keep before him in his study of his ore-deposits is to obtain such a knowledge of them that he will have sound grounds for prediction as to how they will behave in parts of the mines which are well beyond the point of the pick. It is on his judgment of probabilities in this respect that mining operations are entered upon, and the more thorough his knowledge of all the factors affecting the problem, the more is the judgmentlikely to be a sound one. The test of any theory is experimental confirmation of the truth of predictions based upon it, and our aim should be to try to perfect our knowledge of the rules governing deposition of ores, so that our theories may prove themselves equal to the task of successful prediction.

A demonstration project has been completed to reduce the operator sound level of an underground service vehicle, a personnel dispatch wagon, to go dB(A) or less. The program objective was to implement quieting recommendations made on an earlier study for the USBM n diesel-powered mine equipment. The manufacturer and mine to which the vehicle was going actively participated in the program to ensure a product that was not only quiet, but useful. The key element of the quieting package is an engine part a1 enclosure, which, with several complementary noise control components, reduced the operator sound level 14 dB, from 101 dB(A) to 87 dB(A). The vehicle underwent a 4-month trial period, with no degradation in the quieting package. Mine personnel reported no maintenance difficulties, and were enthusiastic about the dispatch.

This volume summarizes mining and petroleum legislation in 45 African jurisdictions. Within these jurisdictions, primary attention is given to requirements that must be met in each country for acquisition of rights to permit development of mineral resources. Coverage includes: First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials; and fourth, mention of laws regulating offshore operations. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of states or provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

Extensive deposits of brown coal exist in the Gippsland Basin, primarily in the Latrobe Valley. The total quantities of economically winnable coal in this region of Victoria and in other smaller fields are large enough to adequately assure Victoria's future electricity needs and to also provide large quantities for alternative applications, including liquefaction. As a result of the recent conflict in the Middle East attention has again been focussed on the production of synthetic fuels from coal. There have been many investigations over the years into the production of oil from Victorian brown coal. The purpose of this paper is to summarise the scope, objectives and major findings of these studies, with the emphasis on the direct hydrogenation route for converting brown coal to oil. The principal alternative processes are carboniastion and hydrotreatment of the product tar, or gasification and Fischer Tropsch synthesis of liquids from the product gas. The attractions of Victorian brown coal which have encouraged these studies include: ò the vast reserves of Victorian brown coal and the favourable conditions for low cost mining, ò the high quality of the coal (low ash, sulphur and nitrogen contents), ò the high reactivity of the coal giving high yields of product in hydrogenation to liquid fuels, ò the extensive data base available on the resource and its characteristics, and ò the availability of a skilled workforce and extensive infrastructure in the Latrobe Region to support a major resource development project. These advantages have been partially offset by: ò the high moisture content of the brown coal and the cost of drying, and ò the priority previously given to electricity generation in the allocation of the brown coal resource.

The literature dealing with the electrical conductivity of solid dielectrics, including all its aspects and its relationships to other physical properties of these materials, is extensive and scattered in many books, phamphlets, and periodicals. It is believed that most of the important contributions to this field up to October 1943 have been listed and abstracted in this circular. Also included are some general references on static electricity. Methods of removing static charges are described; methods of and conditions for measurements of resistivity are discussed; equations for the calculation of resistivity are given; and methods of resistance measurements in Situ are reviewed. Data on the variations of resistivity with changing conditions as well as explanations for them have been collected, and three tables showing the resistivity of various dielectrics at different humidities are included. The appendix contains a short development of the mathematical formulation of the charging and discharging currents due to interfacial polarisation. INTRODUCTION Methods for Removing Static Electricity Of the various means employed for preventing or removing accumulations of static electricity in industrial processes, grounding is the most common and most generally effective. It is a precaution readily applied to stationary machines anti may often be utilized to good advantage to rid persons and portable equipment of an acquired charge. There are many situations, however, in which direct low-resistance grounding cannot be used, either because the charged bodies are insulators or are inaccessible, or because contact to a ground lead might give rise to a hazardous spark. If the charged body is a conductor, contact made to a neighboring conductor, even though the latter be insulated from ground and of relatively small capacitance, may also result in the occurrence of an incendive spark. In such instances, static electricity can sometimes be removed most satisfactorily by means of strong atmospheric ionization produced by radioactive material, X-rays, ultraviolet light, or A. The contour method can be used to estimate the mineral resources of a mineralized body. It relies on geological interpretation and allows the geologist to determine the plunge of a mineralized ore shoot along the dipping plane of the mineralized body. The technique is best applied to estimate tonnage and average grade of relatively planar bodies, i.e., where the two dimensions of the mineralized body are much greater than the third dimension, such as Archean lode gold vein deposits or mantos of massive sulphide mineralization, based on exploration drilling. For these types of deposits, the contour method can provide a clear view of the “mineralization landscape” with “peaks” and “valleys” along the plane of the mineralized vein. The technique also reduces the “nugget effect” of local high values commonly present in gold deposits. With sufficient drill hole information, the contour method may be used to estimate the tonnage and average grade of individual blocks within a mineral deposit. General procedures for the contour method are described in this paper, along with examples and explanatory notes.

The main role of slag in oxygen converter processes is to absorb the non-volatile oxidation products of hot metal impurities, Si, P, Mn, Ti, V, etc. The importance of converter slag as deP and de Smedia has ceased with implementation of special pre- and post-converter treatments. The transfer from top blowing (LD) to combined blowing converters has decreased the amount of slagged iron that, together with the tendency towards lower silicon and manganese contents, has decreased slag to steel ratio. Still the control of slag forming and behaviour during the blow is of great importance. In this paper the thermodynamics of the slag forming reactions, the role of slag in the modern oxygen converter process for impurity elimination, splashing, lining wear, dust formation and post combustion are discussed on the basis of common knowledge and experience of Finnish steel plants.

Rock mass classification is widely used throughout the underground mining industry—in both coal and hard-rock mines. It is used in all stages of the mining process, from site characterization to production operations. The goal of the International Workshop on Rock Mass Classification in Underground Mining was to provide a forum for leading practitioners of rock mass classification to come together and share their methods and experiences with the technique. The workshop was held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on May 31, 2007. It was co-chaired by Christopher Mark, Ph.D., P.E., National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh, PA, and Rimas Pakalnis, P.Eng., University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. The proceedings of the workshop contain 16 invited papers from 9 countries, reflecting the international depth and breadth of current practice. Applications in both hard-rock and coal mining are well represented. Some of the topics that were addressed at the workshop include: • Major rock mass classification systems used in mining and their variants • Collection of input data through observation, rock testing, and geophysics • Design of mine layouts and rock support systems using classification • Estimation of rock mass strength and other input parameters for numerical models from classification • Applications in weak rock, raise boring, cavability assessment, and other special topics • Risk assessment using rock mass classification

West Virginia's basic coal mining regulatory programs are not unique when compared to Federally approved programs implemented by other coal producing states. In fact, the language in The West Virginia Energy Act governing subsidence mirrors that written in the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act as well as other states' statutes. Certain legal and administrative issues, how¬ever, combine to make West Virginia's regulation of surface subsidence a singular approach.

A problem has always existed in deep and fast drilling situations such as coal overburden drilling, or when drilling with a tight annulus, such as 9 7/8" bits and 8 5/8" pipe. This problem is the difficulty experienced by blasthole bit and blasthole drill rig manufacturers to attain large jumps in bit and drill rig productivity through bit and rig design, when drilling in these specific situations. In other drilling situations, these large jumps in productivity have been easily attained.

Failure and fracturing are often regarded as synonymous. While this is obviously true in an environment dominated by tensile stresses, it is still not clear how failure and macro fracturing are related in a compressive stress environment. Excavations at great depths are typically subjected to compressive stresses only. The fracturing observed around such excavations is therefore commonly assumed to be induced by such compressive stresses. The physics of such a phenomenon have unfortunately never been explained properly, so that the formation of these so-called extension fractures still remains a mystery. As the presence of fractures is an important factor affecting the stability of underground excavations, it is of practical relevance to understand their formation. In this paper, a possible explanation is proposed. It is argued that fracturing in a compressive stress environment is a secondary effect. Primary failure, in the form of micro fracturing and associated damage is assumed to precede the major fracture processes. The fractures are thus generated in response to material failure and may not directly be the cause of failure. The implications for material response and behaviour are discussed. "In early 1995 Cluff Mining commissioned a newly constructed high density tailings thickener at its Cluff Lake uranium mill. The 85 ft diameter high density thickener is one of the first of its kind in North America, and incorporates the novel paste technology in its design to produce densified (in the range of 60 -65% solids) mill tailings suitable for stable deposition in the tailings management area. This paper discusses the impetus behind the installation of such an unconventional thickener, and the many trying experiences in making it operational.IntroductionCluff Mining, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cogema Resources Inc., is the operator of a uranium mine and mill complex at Cluff Lake which is located in northern Saskatchewan. Since 1980, the company has developed and mined out several different ore bodies within the Cluff Lake region for the production of uranium concentrates, commonly known as yellow cake. Based on the known ore reserves, the Cluff Lake operations are projected to last till the early 2000's.Tailings from the Cluff Lake mill have been discharged to a tailings management area consisting of a tailings pond and two facilities for primary and secondary treatment systems. The tailings pond has an impervious bentonite lined dam, and it is divided into a solids and a liquids holding areas. Until the beginning of 1995, the mill tailings were discharged in two separate lines to the solids pond; one line carried the slurry residue of 45-50% solids (w/w) from the CCD circuit, and the other discharged raffinate tails containing less than 1 % (w/w) gypsum precipitate. Supernatant in the solids pond is treated in the primary treatment system prior to discharging to the liquids pond. Figure 1 shows the site plan of Cluff Lake tailings management area.It has been estimated that by the end of 1995 the solids pond would be filled to about 60% of its design capacity, and probably would be full before the year 2000. Therefore, Cluff Mining had to consider a more efficient tailings disposal method that could extend the service life of the existing Cluff Lake tailings management area. A high density tailings thickener was believed to be the most practical and economical system for tailings disposal at Cluff Lake mine."
