National Grid needs to maintain a connection between two existing electricity sub-stations (Beddington & Rowdown) in the Croydon (south London) area, and allow the replacement of two 275 kV cable circuits that are buried under roads. This is to be achieved using a single 400 kV cable circuit within a 10 km (6.25 mile) long, 3 m (9.8 ft) diameter high voltage cable tunnel which is being driven through water bearing Chalk, at depths ranging from 5 m (15 ft) to 80 m (262 ft), with four access shafts(12.5 m (41 ft) in diameter) ranging in depth from 10 m (31 ft) to 40 m (131 ft). The Chalk in this area acts as a source of public drinking water supply (PWS) and is protected by areas designated Groundwater Source Protection Zones. To minimise the groundwater risk the design and construction of the cable tunnel and shafts has paid particular attention to the construction materials used, including testing of these construction materials prior to use, developing construction methods (including the design of the Earth Pressure Balance TBM) and maintaining a groundwater monitoring & testing programme prior to and during construction to ensure the integrity of the Chalk aquifer is maintained as a drinking water source. This paper describes the tunnel &shaft design and construction in relation to these particular groundwater environmental issues which set new precedents for tunnel assessment, design and construction requirements in the United Kingdom.

Charleston?s coastal location has helped the city become the fourth largest cargo port in the United States and earn the 2011 designation as the number one travel destination in the United States by the Conde Nast Traveler Magazine. Part of Charleston?s charm and beauty can be attributed to its historic structures and churches that line nearly every sidewalk, roadways that were laid out based on the width of horse carriages, great weather, southern hospitality and coastal living. Now imagine the challenges of installing new, or re-placing aging infrastructure, in this setting. Every shovel full of dirt, every stick of pipe and every roadway sub-surface has its own historic story to tell. For engineering minded individuals, Charleston?s infrastructure has almost as fascinating a history as its more visible surface structures. Charleston was among one of the first American cities to construct separate sanitary and storm water drainage infrastructure. This concept has roots dating back to the city?s founding and is a credit to the foresight of its founding fathers who understood the basic health differences between sanitary and storm water.

"Spirals are gravity concentrators used for the concentration of iron oxide minerals from ores. This paper presents the mineral size recovery curves observed for spirals operating in two Canadian iron ore processing plants. The size recovery curves are presented for rougher, cleaner and re-cleaner spirals. The partition curves observed for the spirals are significantly different than those observed for typical gravity concentration devices such as hydrocyclones or hydraulic classifiers. The size recovery curves show the complex behaviour of the minerals as they flow down a spiral and are analysed with a view toward process modelling and simulation. Initial simulation results show that gains in the iron recovery can be achieved by increasing the recovery of coarse iron oxide particles in the rougher spirals.INTRODUCTION Spiral concentrators are gravity based separation devices used for the preparation of coal, iron and different heavy minerals ores (Wills, 1992). The classification of the particles in spirals is based on the combination of gravity, centrifuge, drag, lift and Bagnold forces (Atasoy and Spottiswood, 1995; Burt, 1984; Bouchard, 2001). Several papers are dedicated to the analysis of the forces acting on the particles flowing down a spiral (Das and al., 2007; Sivamohan and Forssberg, 1985; Holland-Batt and Holtham, 1991; Holtham , 1992). Most of these papers aim at the development of a general model for the simulation of the classification of the particles for coal ore processing. Few papers deal with the operation of spirals for processing iron ores (Hyma and Meech, 1989; Srivastava, 2001; Dallaire et al., 1978) and fewer papers present results for spirals used as cleaners following a rougher stage. Since the classification in spiral classifiers is dependent on the particle size and specific gravity a partition or performance curve commonly applied to classifiers (Mai Manga et al., 2012) is used here to analyse spiral operation. Few papers were found to describe the operation of spirals in terms of partition curves (Atasoy and Spottiswood, 1995; Holland-Batt and Holtham, 1991; Richards et al., 2000). Most of the investigations presented the application of a model to simulate the position of coal particles of various sizes and specific gravities along the trough of a spiral (Kapur et al., 1996; Holland-Batt and Holtham, 1991). In addition most of the available literature on spirals deals with one stage of concentration by spirals (Dallaire et al., 1978; Das and al., 2007; Sivamohan and Forssberg, 1985) while industrial circuits usually consist of rougher and cleaner spirals."

Stirred milling using either horizontal or vertical mills has made a rapid entrance into PGM ore and tailings concentrator flow sheets. Currently there are in excess of 40 units installed in either mainstream, ?MIG? or intermediate concentrate regrind, ?UFG?, applications in PGM, primary ore treatment plants or in tailings scavenging and reclamation treatment plants. This represents a total of approximately 70 MW of installed fine grinding equipment. This paper outlines the reasons why the technology take-up has been rapid and illustrates the advantages of this technology over conventional milling. Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1977 the Ministry of Works and Development has a responsibility for providing information to local and regional planning authorities on public works and matters of national development and importance, for the exercise of their responsibilities under this Act. One such matter which has recently become a source of concern is the development of South Island lignite. In 1979 the Ministry of' Energy produced a position statement outlining a programme of' research leading to the possible extraction of lignite in Southland or Central Otago for conversion into about 50 per cent of New Zealand's liquid fuel requirements by 1995. Understandably this possibility has caused considerable concern at the local level, expressed particularly by bodies such as Federated Farmers and the local authorities. In the absence of any factual knowledge short of mere conjecture been able to recommend to local authorities is that they limit their planning period to ten years. After this time more information regarding the size, nature, location and certainty of the proposal will permit a more accurate assessment of the implications of the York. While on holiday earlier this year I took the opportunity to visit opencast mining areas in Germany and England to gain an appreciation of the scale of impacts involved and discuss with those concerned the procedures used in planning for such operations. What follows is a brief description of these operations, a comparison with the likely development in this country and the extraction of what may be some relevant principles of' operation for the planning of an environmentally acceptable project. Bulk materials handling systems are extensively used in the mining and minerals industry, where a fairly high incidence of structural failure is experienced, notwithstanding design compliance with appropriate standards. A number of case studies are explored to demonstrate how insufficient controls or protection systems have contributed to structural failures on mobile bulk handling equipment. The importance of design integration across engineering disciplines is highlighted. The revision of ISO 5049-1 (1994) is proposed to provide specific rules and guidelines pertaining to machine protection systems. It is further recommended that the structural design engineer of the original equipment manufacturer(OEM) fulfils a more prominent role during the final acceptance and handover of mobile bulk handling equipment, with specific reference to protection systems.

Mine seals can he remotely constructed in underground coal mines through vertical boreholes when direct access to a fire is impossible or considered to he too dangerous. This method has great merit because the boreholes can be drilled to specific mine areas, and the seals can be positioned close to a fire zone. The technology however can be largely ineffective if the constructed seals do not provide of effective barriers to airflow or if they cannot he used to impound water and other inert materials. Unfortunately, no viable alternatives exists to sealing the entire mine to the ground surface. Full-scale remote mine seal construction research is being conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). Under this effort. Howard Concrete Pumping Company and GAI Consultants Inc. have joined forces to evaluate a potentially significant improvement to the current state of the art. This paper covers the development o f novel technology or rewrote mine seal construction, the evaluation of rite materials used, the construction practice and the Fellow-up testing.

"Asbestos tailings are a typical serpentine, hydrated magnesium silicate, consisting primarily of antigorite and a few per cent of unrecovered fibrous chrysotile. Serpentine has unique thermal properties in that dehydroxylating calcination at 600 to 700°C can yield an amorphous structure in which most of the magnesia is liberated from the original bond with silica and thereby rendered chemically active. The amount of activated magnesia can be quantified by selective leaching with a weak acid such as acetic acid. Many wet processes have been proposed to extract magnesium values from calcined or natural serpentine by means of various acids and their ammonium salts. However, the only commercial utilization of serpentine today is found in dry processes such as the production of fused magnesium phosphate fertilizer .The present paper reviews the physical chemistry of the dehydroxylation of serpentine and also various wet and dry processes in order to provide a general view regarding the chemical transformation of asbestos tailings.IntroductionAsbestos fibers occur as chrysotile, a serpentine polymorph. More than nine tenths of mined asbestos ores consist of massive non-fibrous serpentine, primarily the polymorph antigorite, which is discarded as tailings after fiber extraction. For many decades, Quebec has been a world leader in the production of asbestos fibers. As a result, colossal tonnages of serpentine have accumulated in the Eastern Townships'!'. Serpentine minerals are found in large deposit s throughout the world, and significant research efforts have been made, particularly in Japan and the USSR, mostly in attempts to extract magnesia or silica values therefrom.The chemical composition of serpentine (chrysotile and antigorite) may be ideally expressed as Mg3Si2Os(OH). which corresponds to 43.7% MgO and 43.3% SiO2. Natural serpentines often contain a few per cent of Ni-bearing magnetite and other impurities, and therefore the contents of MgO and Si02are both about 40% or lower.Serpentine (hydrated magnesium silicate) is virtually insoluble in weak acids. However, when dehydroxylated under controlled conditions, ' it decomposes to an amorphous state in which magnesia and silica are isolated and chemically active. The magnesia so activated is readily soluble in weak acids. This unique characteristic of calcined serpentine, first discovered in 1942,, has since attracted the attention of innumerable researchers, whence many processes have been proposed."

"Abstract The economic and safe design of deep foundation systems in difficult soil conditions is based on a reduction of construction material used, construction time spent, energy consumed and a high-level modelling of the soil-structure-interaction. The special foundation system Combined Pile- Raft Foundation (CPRF), in-situ load tests on the construction site and a sufficient soil investigation allow cost optimised constructions. In any case at challenging projects the observational method has to be applied for verification and quality control of the design. Regarding the 4-Eye-Principle as basis of the quality control management an independent peer review of the planning, design and construction phases is the guarantee for safety, serviceability and optimisation of all projects. Main execution standards for the construction of deep foundations based on the Eurocode 7 are summarised and discussed. The paper presents the basics of the safe and qualified design and construction of foundation systems including quality assurance. Cyprus Shoshone Mine uses the longwall method to extract a deep, thick, pitching coal seam in the Hanna Basin of South Central Wyoming. The immediate, and main roof rock consists of weak, thinly-bedded, silty mudstones with weak, interbedded fine-to medium-grained sandstone. Tailgate ground control has been a critical factor impacting productivity at the mine. A gateroad condition mapping program for the 11 left longwall gateroads indicated potentially severe ground control problems for the tailgate. It was predicted that the existing, secondary support pattern of wood cribs would not provide adequate support capacity. As predicted, severe deterioration of the tailgate occurred in the form of a roof cutter, sloughing ribs, and failing wood cribs. Productivity was affected and additional support was required. Shoshone personnel evaluated several options for providing the additional support needed in the tailgate. The additional support system and placement method had to satisfy several requirements with respect to access, materials handling, placement method, set-up time and support capacity. Approximately 6,000-ft. of deteriorating tailgate had to be supported. The initial wood crib support system left a 6-ft. walkway for access and construction of the additional support. This access was further reduced as the roof loaded the wood cribs. This eliminated the possibility of mechanized material handling to the construction locations. All materials would have to be transported by hand. The additional support system had to be placed quickly to stay ahead of, and keep pace with, the required longwall advance rate. It had to incorporate the existing wood cribs and provide at least 500 tons of extra support capacity. And most critically, the system could not affect longwall ventilation. Longwall coordinators and engineers made the decision to use a low density, pumpable cement known to the industry as TeksealTM, to provide the system required. A 200 psi ultimate strength mix was decided on to provide the required load capacity. The existing cribs were formed with 1-in. by 6-in. boards and brattice cloth to provide the containment. To overcome the access limitations, three boreholes were drilled from the surface to the tailgate on 2,000-ft centers. A mobile pumping station was established on the surface and the TeksealTM was pumped 900-ft. down the boreholes through a 1.5-in. steel pipe, then as much as 1,800- ft. along the tailgate entry through 1.25-in. miner spray hose. The materials required for the TeksealTM supports could all be carried into the construction locations by hand. As a direct result of incorporating relatively new methods of pumping high yield, low density, cementitious grouts, the Shoshone Mine reduced downtime due to tailgate ground control problems by approximately 70% in comparison with previous Longwall panels. The longwall set three monthly production records while mining the 11 left longwall under the deepest cover, steepest pitch, and most extreme ground control conditions ever encountered at the mine.

A brief summary is given of the geo-mechanical environment and previous mining history existing in a number of areas of particular interest from the point of view of thick seam mining. A classification of thick seam mining methods is presented with emphasis on the critical geo-mechanical parameters influencing the performance of such methods. A summary is made of perceived geo-mechanical research requirements related to thick seam mining in Australian coalfields.

A brief summary of the propagation characteristics of rock provides the necessary understanding to design effective radar surveys. Measurements of the electrical properties of the major Bushveld platinum-bearing horizons and their host rocks show that radar is an excellent tool for both short -and longer-range mapping. Experimental work confirms the performance predictions. High frequency, 500 MHz ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a first-rate tool for mapping features in the hangingwall of the orebody, locally known as a ?reef?, for the purposes of determining hangingwall stability. The triplet chromitites above the UG2 have been clearly mapped, as has the Leader Seam above the UG2. Borehole radar at lower frequencies has been used over longer ranges to map reef elevation. Potholes in the UG2 are clearly distinguished in range and elevation to within metre accuracy. The nature of the slump in the various footwall horizons is also apparent. In future, as GPR is routinely applied, it is likely to become used for other purposes. Borehole radar is being developed to operate at higher frequencies, which will allow it to be deployed from boreholes that are within 5 m of the target horizon. Since the 1960’s toroidal conductivity has been used to determine the Alumina to Caustic ratio of the digester discharge liquor stream. In recent years the application of ceramic materials have allowed the sensors to moved upstream to provide tighter control of the process. In the Bayer process, dissolving the aluminum contained in bauxite ore in caustic soda and converting it to aluminum oxide produces alumina. An important parameter of the process is measuring the alumina to caustic ratio in the digester discharge stream. The A/C ratio at a given caustic concentration is a measure of the degree of saturation of the alumina in the plant liquor. The aim in the process is to achieve a high A/C ratio. There is however a limit where precipitation will occur if the A/C ratio is too high. For many years conductivity has been used to determine the A/C ratio. Conductivity of discharge liquor is related to the caustic concentration. The change in the caustic concentration is in the same direction of the change of solubility of the alumina. Controlling the conductivity through adding additional bauxite ore and varying the dilution flow can increase plant yield.

The dissolution of the naturally occurring mineral zircon (ZrSiO4) is examined after ball milling it with magnesium oxide for up to 100 hours in a laboratory mill. There was little effect on the solubility for the initial two hours where size reduction of the zircon was considered to be the dominant effect. Beyond two hours the dissolution increased as a function of the square root of milling time. X-ray diffraction of the powders did not reveal the identity of the soluble phase. However, a nanocrystalline phase was present after milling and this is thought to be the soluble phase.

Igneous phosphate deposits located in tropical and subtropical regions of the world are characterised by low P2O5 grades, very diversified mineralogy and intensive lateral plus vertical variations in chemical composition, mineralogical assembly, rock texture, grain size, slimes content and morphology plus surface coating of apatite particles. Those variations characterise ore types with distinct behaviour in mineral processing plants. This work reviews the main challenges to concentrate those ores, addressing developed solutions. Apatite concentration requires long chain anionic collectors to conduct reverse flotation of barite (alkyl sulfate) before direct flotation of apatite (sarcosinate, sulfosuccinate and oleate) at basic medium. The long chain collectors decrease the surface tension of the flotation solution (?LV) and a particular value of 51 mN/m was found to promote the most selective separation between apatite/gangue at a particular plant. Effective control of the magnitude of ?LV in industrial plants has not been realistic because there is a lack of reliable instruments to carry out in-situ measurements. Regarding gangue depression by starch, a review is made on possible mechanisms that promote its remarkable ability to depress some minerals (Fe-oxides, ortho plus meta silicates and calcite) vis-a-vis others (quartz, apatite and layered silicates). Flotation recovery (R) of fine (20<R<30 per cent) and coarse (30<R<60 per cent) apatite particles is considerably lower than the recovery of the intermediate ones (R>70 per cent) and inadequate hydrodynamic conditions within flotation cells are the main reasons for that behavior. Once the best hydrodynamic conditions to float coarse particles are not the same to float the fine ones, flotation of coarse and fine particles is commonly conducted at separated circuits in industrial scale. Entrainment of very fine gangue particles is an important source of contamination of apatite concentrates, mainly when weathered ores are treated. In most cases, adjustments in flotation equipment (columns or mechanical cells) promote considerable improvement in the quality of final concentrates.

A new office complex is being constructed within 25m of the Hudson River in New Jersey. The project, about 140 m by 100 m, will include 4 basements under the entire footprint. The perimeter was to be secured by a 0.8 m thick diaphragm wall, laterally supported by high capacity tieback anchors to rock. Columns were to be supported on footings or piers to rock at a nominal bearing pressure of 3.8 MPa at depths up to 17m. Although some variation in rock quality was observed in borings, a substantial vertical seam of weathered and/or decomposed rock, 1 to 2 meters wide by as much as 8 meters deep, was encountered during construction necessitating field redesign. In some locations the seam dipped below more competent rock. Footings were redesigned for support on drilled caissons, or soft rock was excavated and replaced with concrete necessitating a reduction in bearing pressure of the footings by one half.

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) Sorting in the Upgrading and Processing of Skorpion Non-Sulfide Zinc Ore In 2008 Anglo American sponsored a research project at RWTH Aachen University to assess the feasibility of the use of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for ore waste discrimination at the Skorpion zinc mine. The Skorpion mine is an open pit zinc mine located in Namibia, owned by Anglo American with an annual production of 150 000 t/a of super high grade pure zinc. Opportunities for the implementation of NIRS sorting for the Skorpion process exist to upgrade currently subeconomic material, including the marginal dump (over 2000 000 tonnes, av grade of 2.5 per cent Zn). NIRS sorting is not yet implemented or established in the minerals industry however it is a proven technology in the plastics recycling industry, where more than 2000 NIRS sorters have already been installed. NIRS sorting, a type of sensor-based sorting, is a single particle sorting technique which classifies the particles based on the absorbed/reflected radiation in the near-infrared (NIR) region. A disadvantage of NIRS is that it is a surface measurement technique, but NIRS sorting shows overall great potential for the minerals industry. Skorpion ore minerals include zinc bearing phases such as sauconite, hemimorphite, smithsonite, and hydrozincite. These display diagnostic responses in the near-infrared. There are three major absorption features that characterise the reflectance spectra of the ore bearing minerals. These are due to OH and H2O molecular bonds. The spectral response of the waste material is caused by other minerals such as non-zinc-bearing clay minerals, calcite and impure quartz. Test work showed that it is theoretically possible to separate ore material from most waste material based on spectral response in the NIR region. In addition to upgrading material by removal of waste it is also potentially feasible to classify the material based on zinc grade. A tentative correlation between zinc grade and spectral response seems to exist for the sample test suite in the NIR region.

The vertical distribution of platinum-group elements (PGE) in the Merensky and UG2 chromitite Reefs is highly variable, but does follow certain general patterns that allow the testing of geological models. In the Merensky reef, historically popular geological representations and interpretations have suggested that the mineralization occurs in a pegmatitic pyroxenite bounded by two chromitite layers. However, there are now enough published exceptions to this relationship to expose its fallacy. The vertical distribution of the PGE depends largely upon the separation between these two chromitite layers or the absence of one chromitite layer. Where separation is small or only one chromitite layer is present, there is considerable PGE mineralization in the footwall below the pyroxenite and lower chromitite layer. With increasing separation between the two chromitites, the mineral¬ization occurs progressively higher in the succession, and tends to track the upper chromitite layer. The view presented here is that the entire Merensky package is comprised of three events of magma emplacement, in which each has produced variable reaction with, and erosion of, the footwall, causing recrystallization of pyroxenite into pegmatitic pyroxenite. The magma then produced a chromitite layer followed by pyroxenite. Each chromitite layer is associated with some mineralization, which was extensively complemented by the subsequent formation of a sulphide liquid carrying PGE that trickled down through about 1 m of permeable crystal pile. The sulphide liquid formed after, not coincident with, the pyroxenite layers. The distribution of PGE in the UG2 chromitite shows up to three upward depletion sequences of PGE, also suggesting three events. The PGE are associated only with the chromite. The contribution from a sulphide liquid is considered to have been minimal for two reasons. Cu and Ni are extremely low in the UG2 which would not be expected if sulphides had been present. Also, by analogy with the Merensky, downward trickling of sulphides would have caused some PGE to be present in the footwall. There are some PGE in the footwall, but only where remnants of chromitite occur, and the hanging wall is lacking in PGE. In the northeastern Bushveld the UG2 chromitite is thinner than elsewhere, and there is a UG3 chromitite layer, not present elsewhere, that has a high Pt/Pd ratio. It is surmized that in the rest of the Bushveld the UG3 only appears to be absent because it has merged with the UG2 to produce the high Pt concentration at the top of the composite UG2. The non-accumulation of the package of pyroxenite-norite-anorthosite between the UG2 and UG3 in the northeastern Bushveld, which is not seen elsewhere, creates an interesting challenge to the formation of silicate layering in the complex. The structure of the Bulli coal seam at Appin Colliery was detailed by the seismic reflection method. This unusual application of the seismic method was possible because there is a reflector near the seam as was revealed during exploration for petroleum in an area north-west of Appin. The reflector, which was at a depth of 1,500 ft, was shallow by normal reflection survey standards. Measurement of the seismic velocity at two ventilation shafts showed that the reflector was probably the Bulli coal seam. (Fig. 1), is being developed to supply coking coal to the Port Kembla steelworks of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. The colliery is mechanized and a detailed knowledge of structure, particularly faulting, is important in planning the workings.The Bulli seam, which is approximately 9 ft thick, and between 1,500 ft and 1,800 ft below the surface, is worked in the colliery. It is the uppermost member of the Permian Coal Measures and is overlain by Triassic rocks, which consist of thick sandstone beds containing beds of coloured shales, and which are subdivided into the Narrabeen Group, the Hawkesbury Sandstone, and the Wianamatta Group.In the early stages of development of the colliery, surface geological mapping and diamond drilling provided information on structure. Generalized results of the mapping are shown on Fig. 2. Drilling indicated that the physical and chemical properties of the Bulli seam are relatively constant, and that the seam is nearly horizontal, the average dipbeing about 1 in 25 to the west.
