This paper reports on recent field observations on the performance of support systems under different corrosion environments in Canadian underground mines. Phenomenological data are used to gain a better understanding of the main causes of corrosion in underground metal mines. Preliminary field data collected from five metal mines have been complemented by atmospheric and water sample analysis as well as fractography and metallographic studies. This has identified dominant factors that control the corrosion of support systems. The data are analysed in order to develop a support strategy for mines operating in corrosion environments.

Keywords: Magnesium, pyrometallurgy, Mintek Samples of crude magnesium produced by the Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process were refined in two stages. The first stage consisted of co-melting of batches of the crude metal and MgCl2-KCl flux (cleaning), followed by stirring at 30 rpm for 30 minutes and settling of the sludge (mixture of molten salt and solid impurities) from the magnesium melt. The operating temperature was 680?730°C. Most of the contained calcium and significant proportions of iron and silicon were transferred into the sludge phase, which left a metal containing, on average, 950 ppm Si, 470 ppm Fe, and 230 ppm Ca. In the second stage, small-scale refining tests were conducted on cleaned samples from the first stage, as well as on crude magnesium. FeCl3 was used as the refining agent. These tests were carried out at 715?760°C with various amounts of the refining agent. The refined metal was suitable for the production of various magnesium alloys, particularly AZ91D.

This paper describes the behaviour, under creep conditions, of a cast lead creep specimen consisting of five crystals, the boundaries of these crystals being substantially at right angles to the direction' of tension, i.e., across the long axis of the specimen. This particular specimen was obtained in an attempt to produce a single crystal in the manner described in the appendix of a previous paper (1).Thus, the specimen was of the same shape and size, was composed of the same purity lead and received the same preliminary treatment as the single crystal test-pieces.The object of the experiment was mainly to observe the effect of the crystal boundaries on both the deformation of the test piece and the process of recrystallisation and to compare the creep rate of the test-piece with that of a specimen consisting of one crystal only.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe specimen had an effective test length of 10 cms. and a cross $ection of 0·5 in. x 0·25 in. In Fig. 1 is given a sketch of the specimen to scale showing the positions of the crystal boundaries on all four surfaces. The Fashion Island Boulevard Bridge over the Marina Lagoon in San Mateo, California is an eight span precast, prestressed concrete girder bridge. It is approximately 495 feet in length and 61 feet in width. It is supported on 36" diameter octagonal, hollow precast-prestressed concrete pile columns. The bridge was constructed in 1968 and suffered considerable damage during the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989. A damage survey report prepared by the State's Office of Emergency Services (OES) recorded that sixteen of the twenty-one pile-columns sustained heavy to moderate damage from the Loma Prieta Earthquake. The damage consisted of cracking and spalling at the tops of the pile-columns. Spalls at the most heavily damaged columns exposed the prestressing strands and confinement reinforcing which also showed signs of corrosion.

Drilling in the south of the Rapahoe Sector at Greymouth Coalfield has demonstrated the existence of thick coal seams in the upper Rewanui Member. Seam correlation is handicapped by complex lithostratigraphy and laterally variable geophysical log profiles. An integrated investigation of coal measure stratigraphy, coal petrology, and proximate analyses, suggests a feasible model whereby most of the major seam intersections belong to a single horizon. Coal properties vary laterally in response to original swamp conditions, which are believed to have ranged from well-drained to ponded. A new model of peat accumulation is proposed for the northern Rapahoe Sector, whereby Upper Rewanui peat accumulation occurred on a flood plain between the levees of a major south southwest-flowing fluvial system in the east and the toe of a western alluvial fan.

Western Coalfield?s Tandsi Mine, has difficult support conditions and a history of roof falls, resulting in mining roadway widths and depths being restricted for safety reasons. Rock Mechanics Technology Ltd was contracted to improve the support system to allow the introduction of mechanised room and pillar mining. The introduction of a ?world best practice? bolting system resulted in major improvement in roof stability, allowing mining restrictions to be lifted and Tandsi to become one of the first two Indian mines to introduce a mechanised continuous miner system. The first year?s production was some six times previous levels. Because of the improvement in the support system, RMT was also able to design a partial de-pillaring system suitable for the Tandsi continuous miner districts together with the introduction of monitoring procedures and guidelines to maintain safe roof support conditions. In situ monitoring of pillar and roof behaviour was undertaken as the first pillars were extracted to confirm the design. De-pillaring operations have also proved highly productive, and to date there has been no associated support related major injury or dangerous occurrence. The success of this project demonstrates the potential for mechanised room and pillar mining in India.

"During the early summer of 1989, Ontario Hydro removed a concrete portion of the North Channel Dam at Crystal Falls Generating Station by blasting and excavating in marine conditions. Because of the severity of underwater blasting and because the site was in close proximity to the replacement dam, there was concern that hydraulic shock waves generated by the detonation could damage either the new dam or its control structures. This paper examines the data associated with the hydraulic shock waves generated by underwater blasting, and studies the effectiveness of an air curtain in reducing the peak pressures. In previous trials using the air curtain technique, a rule-of-thumb factor was used to estimate that only 10% of the original pressure pulse would propagate across the air curtain. However, this value had little basis in theory. A theoretical formulation of the problem by Karney in 1989 indicated a provisional value of 0.18 for this factor, but was heavily dependent on confirmation from in-field testing. Data provided by Ontario Hydro from an actual blasting procedure indicate that a more conservative value of 0.32 may be more appropriate. Thus.although the air curtain did provide considerable reduction of peak pressures, the data at Crystal Falls indicates its performance was below the anticipated level. However, due to problems with the instrumentation and some inconsistencies in the resulting data. it is recommended that this value be further refined as additional data become available."

"Abstract When addressing the performance of deep foundations, many parameters play a role, from adequate soil investigation to performance monitoring and testing. The correct understanding of pile construction, though, remains crucial. After a long period of empirical design and regulations, the last decades have been the ones of theoretical considerations and extensive codes writing. The interaction between technology and design, however, still plays a determinant role. The introduction of hydraulics and the exponential increase in available power on one hand, the miniaturization and the introduction of electronics in control and monitoring systems on the other hand have exerted a major influence on new foundation systems or the evolution and control of existing systems. It appears important to try to take execution related parameters and their control during execution more deeply into account when assessing the final result of the deep foundations and the achieved level of safety and reliability. In this contribution, we will try to analyze how systems, equipment and pile production monitoring and testing can influence the pile performance, and if/how this influence could/should be translated in adapted safety or installation factors. This analysis will run through different categories of piles: driven, augercast and displacement auger piles and bored piles. INTRODUCTIONThe global performance of a deep foundation depends on different aspects (Poulos, 2003):1. Ground investigation2. Design and analysis3. Construction4. Testing5. Performance monitoring6. Remediation and performance enhancementThis paper intends to address the importance of pile construction and the control of it on the final performance of the pile-group of piles. There has been an increasing interest for theoretical analysis over the last 20 years, followed by an increasing impact of regulation and codes. Without denying the importance of the latter, the author wants to point out how installation procedure and project specific parameters can largely influence the reliability of the deep foundation. In this context, detailed and prescriptive standards can miss their objective of intended improvement of accuracy and reliability, but even worse they can adversely impact engineering judgment. In today’s construction world, it is possible to gather installation information which can be of outmost importance for the final deep foundations performance. Therefore, the increase or decrease of installation reliability through adequate pile testing and performance monitoring should be emphasized and should be taken into account in the codes. This is the case already in most advanced codes, but in a limited and insufficiently refined way. After reviewing how codes deal with this issue today, we will show some recent examples of unexpected results due to pile installation. We will try to put these examples into a broader perspective by highlighting some reference and/or recent literature considerations. Finally we will try to summarize how pile testing and installation documentation can increase reliability and attempt to open the debate on how codes could/should allow for more engineering judgment."

"An apparatus and procedure developed in the laboratory of the South-west Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines are capable not only of determining the rate and volume of penetration of solutions into porous materials but also of determining the total volume of voids within particles of porous material, and the density. The method is applicable to ores, bricks, concretes, tiles, filter bottoms, or other porous materials of this nature. As will be made clear in the descriptive matter to follow, the method measures (a) the volume of voids within the porous materials and is not concerned with the interstitial space between the particles.Porous materials usually contain some large voids and also pores that are capillary in nature. To measure the total volume of voids in a sample it is necessary to replace the gas or gases within the voids with some liquid of known density. The large cavities can be filled quite readily, but under ordinary conditions a long time may be required to fill capillary pores. As many porous materials are of a decomposable nature it is necessary to evacuate the porous materials and then submerge them in a liquid of known density to bring about saturation in a short time. Then by the use of a hydrostatic balance the volume of porous material (solid itself) can be determined. To determine the volume of porous material plus voids it is necessary to coat the sample with some material, such s paraffin, which will prevent solution from entering the voids; then, by means of a hydrostatic balance, the volume of porous material plus voids is determined and by subtracting that of the porous material from this the volume of voids is ascertained. The rate of penetration of solutions can be determined either (a) by measuring the change in weight as the sample becomes saturated when immersed ni a liquid of know density, or (b) by measuring the volume of liquid penetrating with a dilatometer. In either instance, due to the fact that some penetration takes place as soon as the sample comes in contact with solution and before a reading can be taken, the sample must be paraffined to determine the total volume of penetration. Since many porous materials partly decompose and disintegrate in liquids the rate and volume of penetration can better be measured by dilatometer than by the change in weight, as saturation takes place when immersed in a liquid. The details of procedure for determining (a) total volume of voids, and (b) rate and volume of penetration are given in this paper."

The efficiency by which an applied load is transmitted through the composite structure depends on the strength of the interface between the matrix and the second phase. In fiber reinforced composites, the interfacial shear stress plays a major role in the composite capacity to support the applied load. This interfacial stress can be obtained by means of pullout tests using the fiber embedded to a certain length in a socket of the matrix material. In the present work, pullout tests were performed to evaluate the interfacial shear stress of ramie, a relatively strong natural fiber, reinforcing polyester matrix composites. The general result permitted to calculate a critical length for the ramie fiber embedded in polyester resin. From this critical length, the value of the interfacial shear stress was calculated. An interpretation of this result together with SEM observation displayed a relatively weak bond between the ramie fiber and the polyester matrix.

The Old Bevier Aerobic Wetland in Macon County, Missouri, was constructed between 1990 and 1991 by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Land Reclamation Program for the purpose of treating acid mine drainage (AMD). The principal source of the AMD is from an underground mine that operated during the 1920's through 1950's, which was partially exposed during surface mining in the 1960’s. Limestone bedding of an AMD collection system provided alkalinity similar to an anoxic limestone drain (ALD). Because the original aerobic wetland failed when a critical dilution water supply became unavailable, the total acidity of the AMD overwhelmed the limited neutralization ability of the aerobic wetland. The aquatic vegetation deteriorated and treatment became ineffective. The Missouri Land Reclamation Program with the assistance of the Office of Surface Mining, Mid-Continent Regional Coordinating Center rehabilitated the Old Bevier Aerobic Wetland in 2001, incorporating newer technologies to improve the performance. The new system, Old Bevier II treatment facility, consists of a 2-stage vertical flow pond (VFP) with associated oxidation cells and aerobic wetlands. This paper discusses the performance of this passive AMD treatment system, updating an earlier report. The new treatment system has operated with nearly continuous net alkaline discharge and a high iron removal rate. Treatment improves during warm months when emergent vegetation is fully established and biologic activity is greater. Reduction in system efficiency is evident during winter months.

From site demolition, to design, to construction, Detroit's new Tiger Stadium project is required to be completed within a short 2 ½ years from award of the design-build contract. Such extreme schedule requirements together with somewhat difficult ground conditions at the site, resulted in several challenges in the design and construction of the deep foundation system for the stadium. During the geotechnical investigation, an intermittent water bearing sand layer was encountered overlying the hardpan at the site. As a result, some concern developed regarding the potential for collapse of caisson bells within this layer, as well as the potential for flooding of the caissons during drilling. Although sand and/or ground water was encountered within about half of the caissons, standard drilling and belling methods were used, and adverse conditions were controlled in almost all cases through expeditious drilling, inspection and concreting of the caissons. This paper will present a summary of the ground conditions, design and specification requirements, and construction methods used to successfully install the caissons for this project.

The production of a 40% Al-Ti alloy was successfully proven at the lab scale, using pure TiO2, aluminium, and lime. These tests were conducted in an induction furnace maintained at 1600?16250C. The introduction of rutile into the feed recipe resulted in an alloy containing between 0.35 and 1.10% Zr, depending on rutile to TiO2 ratio. DC arc production of the alloy was largely accomplished at 40 and then 200kW scale. These tests evaluated various metallurgical and operational factors including target slag composition, Ti-content in the alloy, co-feeding versus sequential, furnace bath depth, and rutile as part of the Ti containing feedstock. Overall, an alloy containing 24?33% Ti was consistently produced with co-feeding of the reactants and with lower taphole tapping. When rutile was added, the zirconium analysis in the alloy remained below 0.2%. The main impurity elements were iron, silicon, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen.

The seismic wave produced by an explosive is very important in blasting. A true understanding of the wave is only important when considering possible structural damage to buildings located near the blast, but it is also of primary importance when considering rock fragmentation. Because of the importance of the seismic wave to fragmentation, a finda-mental study of the seismic wave and its effect was made at the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co.'s mine at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico. Strain gages were used to measure the strain in the rock when nearby explosive charges were detonated. The variance in the circuit voltage caused by changes in the resistance of the strain gage was measured with an oscilloscope and recorded with a Polaroid camera. CONFINED DRILLHOLE CHARGES To record the seismic wave from a confined drillhole explosive charge, a gage was cemented to the bottom of a 4-in diam drillhole. The horizontal gage hole and nine horizontal charge holes were drilled perpendicular to the center line of the 2-39 drift and 4 ft above the floor. The gage hole was 29 in. deep, and the charge holes were drilled so that each bottomed 1 in. deeper than the gage hole. The gage was installed with its axis horizontal and parallel to the 2-39 drift. The charge holes had the following horizontal distances from the gage: hole 3, 3 ft; hole 4, 4 ft; hole 5, 5 ft; hole 9, 9 ft; hole 10, 10 ft; hole 14, 14 ft; and hole 15, 15 ft. Figs. 1 and 2 show the relationships of the gage and the charge holes. Charges of 80 pct special gelatin, which weighed 50, 100, and 150 g were exploded in the charge holes and the seismic waves were recorded. All charges were stemmed with 200 g of mud and detonated with an electric blasting cap. Fig. 3 shows the recorded seismic waves. The reflected components of the waves were too weak to be objectional on these records. Table I shows the data taken from the wave forms. The approximate average velocity of a wave with a 9-ft travel distance was 12,900 fps. Since different charge weights were used, it was necessary to scale the data. The scaled maximum compress ion-strain data and the scaled maximum tens ion-strain data are shown in Figs. 4 and 5, respectively. Figs. 6 and 7 show the strain-distance data from Figs. 4 and 5 converted to a 1-lb charge. The results showed that the wave consisted of an initial compression pulse followed by a tension pulse. The amplitude of the tension pulse approached the amplitude of the compression pulse as the distance between the gage and the shot increased. The decay rate of the seismic wave is very important in the evaluation of the blasting characteristics of a rock. When high-amplitude stresses are produced, as in rock fragmentation, the rate of decay is much more rapid than when small amplitude stresses are produced. In underground mine blasting, the burdens are usually not greater than 6 ft and the decay is very rapid. The paper presents new advanced systems developed by the specialist contractor to bring, at all stages of the project, an efficient control of operations and presents a case history taken from the project at Tren Urbano, Rio Piedras Section, constructed beneath an historic commercial section of San Juan de Puerto Rico.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed the cycle of secondary gold to determine the quantity of gold not being recovered from scrap, and to identify areas for research to increase the supply of gold from scrap. Secondary gold in 1967 was estimated to be 2.4 million troy ounces; this excludes secondary gold which is recycled within consuming plants. Firms contacted included consumers using about 41 percent of the gold in 1967, And refiners that recovered about 90 percent of the secondary gold. Results of the study indicate that loss of gold is small, and refiners and consumers are accelerating programs designed to reduce recovery costs. With the increasing generation of low-grade industrial scrap, research is needed to improve present recovery techniques and to develop methods to accelerate the flow of secondary gold back to supply.
