El presente trabajo describe la realización del monitoreo de zonas revegetadas de cierre de minas utilizando técnicas de teledetección espacial. El estudio evaluó las áreas iniciales del programa de revegetación final de la minera Yanacocha. Las áreas de estudio son Maqui Maqui y San José, se localizan en la zona este de operaciones y se encuentran en cierre desde el año 200 y son restauradas dentro del programa de revegetación de áreas finales de la empresa. Como parte de la medición del éxito del programa se realiza el monitoreo de las mismas utilizando estas nuevas tecnologías. Por ello, es aplicable como parte de la conducción de los programas de revegetación de los planes de cierre de minas.

The Government of Belize maintained strict control over spending in 1982 as a means of protecting its import-dependent economy against the effects of a general worldwide recession. The modest economic performance was not expected to differ substantially from the $152 million2 gross national product (GNP) estimated for 1981. Exports and reexports were expected to decline in 1982, partly as a result of the Mexican peso devaluation. Imports were also expected to decline slightly in 1982, but the overall trade deficit was projected some-what higher than the $44 million experienced in 1981. On September 21, 1982, Belize became an independent state. As a result, the new Government became eligible for assistance from international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Belize's independence from its former status as a colony of Great Britain was marred somewhat by the unsettled territorial dispute between Great Britain and Guatemala. Guatemala declared Belize was a part of Guatemala and. therefore. refused to recognize it as an independent state. Negotations between Great Britain and Guatemala continued without resolution.

This preliminary bulletin was written as the first of a series of several on the significance of drafts in steam-boiler practice, the succeeding bulletins to be along the same lines but of a more advanced character. The conclusions arrived at are tentative, and are the result of a study of one of the many problems growing out of a general plan of the United States Government to increase the efficiency with which the coals of the country are being used. Greater efficiency requires better boiler and furnace design. The experimental study of drafts on which the conclusions presented in this bulletin are based formed part of the fuel-testing investigations that were carried on by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey and have been transferred to the Bureau of Mines. The experiments made seem to indicate that it is possible to double or treble the capacity of a plant without making any radical changes the furnaces and boilers. These increases require about double and treble the quantities of air to be put through the fuel beds and boilers. It also seems probable that rebafHing the boilers will often permit the capacity to be doubled or trebled, while still getting more steam than formerly per pound of coal for uses outside the boiler room. These experiments were undertaken with the object of clarifying ideas concerning the passage of air through fuel beds and boilers. Measured weights of air were passed through two beds of lead shot, series, one of which remained always the same and represented a boiler; the other being varied as to size of shot and depth of bed, and representing a fuel bed. Careful observations were made of the weight of air passing through the beds per minute. All data were plotted in many charts, so as to permit the study of them from several points of view. A number of laws were deduced bearing on the relative amounts of power required to force air through fuel beds of various thicknesses, composed of various sizes of coal, and through boilers of various lengths and areas of gas passages. An important part of the discussion relates to an increase in the capacity of boilers by increasing the amount of power applied to pressure and exhausting fans and thus forcing several times as much air through the fuel beds and boilers. may be possible, as a result of these investigations, to raise the rate of working the boiler heating surface to three or even four times its present value. Such an increase would undoubtedly mean new designs of grates, stokers, furnaces, and boilers, especially fitted for high rates of working. Fan equipments designed to supply three or four times as much air under several times the pressure would be provided with more efficient engines, thus giving an additional factor favoring high-capacity working. It must be borne in mind, as stated above, that the results are tentative. It will cost money to force gases at high speeds through fuel beds and boilers, and there will soon be pressing need of such quantitative data as will enable the largest possible part of the energy imparted by the fans to be advantageously utilized. Gold mineralisation at Porgera is inferred to have been derived from a deep differentiated magmatic source which is capped by a series of (now tilted) inward dipping sills and stocks, which comprise the Porgera Intrusive Complex. An arc normal transfer structure provides a conduit, at tile intersection with an arc parallel structure, into which basic magma derived from tile deep melting of mantle material has been emplaced. Two phases of mineralisation display an association with late stage feldspar porphyry intrusives. Stage I carbonate-base metal-style gold mineralisation occurs as early quartz-sericite, then massive sulphide and late zoned Mn-Fe-Mg-Ca carbonate vein/breccias. Magmatic fluids derived from the deep magma source, are interpreted to have migrated along me margin of a feeder stock to the sills, and south to Waruwari. Stage II epithermal Au-Ag quartz-style gold mineralisation occurs as early fluidised breccias and carbonate veining, followed by zoned quartz-roscoelite-carbonate-gold vein/breccias, and late carbonate and/or sulphate open space infill. Magmatic fluids are interpreted to have utilised the same plumbing system as the late stage feldspar porphyry intrusive, and then migrated into the Roamane Fault which was dilated by; dextral rotation on elements of the transfer structure, normal faulting, and refraction around the competent footwall hornblende diorite. Bonanza gold is localised in a jog in the Roamane Fault, hangingwall splits and at intersections with cross structures. Bulk low grade Stage I gold has been deposited by the mixing of magmatic fluids with cool gas condensate waters, whereas high grade Stage II gold mineralisation resulted from the rapid quenching of mineralised magmatic fluids by oxygenated groundwaters.

Phase designs are the foundation upon which all open pit mine sequence optimizations and budgets should be built. Unfortunately, at times, mine engineers skip the step of developing realistic pit phase designs - designs that include access ramps and mineable widths. Without mineable phase designs, their optimized schedules are based on theoretical pit shells or ?quick-and-dirty? plans with no ramps. The output from such optimizations is almost always overly optimistic. Without mineable designs, the production estimates are misleading, because they overestimate ore, and underestimate waste stripping requirements. Worse yet, when plans are not based on realistic phase designs, they can point to exactly the wrong decision in feasibility studies (i.e. ?go? when it should be ?no-go?). This paper discusses the importance and features of good pit phase design, and demonstrates the pitfalls of relying on optimized production sequences that are not based on properly designed pit phases.

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) IN, August, 1911, I read a paper before the Lake Superior Mining Institute' on surveying and sampling diamond-drill holes. The present paper gives a more thorough description of these methods, together with a few changes and notes suggested by further experience. Since August, 1911, the methods, used constantly by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., have been developed to a higher degree of efficiency, and have given great satisfaction. Until a few years ago but little attention was paid to the determination of the actual course of drill-holes, to the accurate sampling and analysis of the material, or to the scientific location of the drill-holes. It has now been common practice for several years in many districts to test the inclination of drill-holes by etching glass tubes with hydrofluoric acid, but the direction of deviation from the vertical has not often been determined. Methods of determining the direction by means of a compass were first developed in connection with drilling in Victoria. The latest method used on the Rand in South Africa has been recently described by John I. Hoffman.2 In the same paper Mr. Hoffman describes an ingenious method of wedging-off a drill-bole so as to start new holes at several successive points. By this means a hole can be deflected in any desired direction, and the curvature can be controlled to a considerable extent, provided the rock is soft enough to permit the hole to be wedged off. Unfortunately, in the Lake Superior district, the jasper iron-formation is so hard that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to do this. The Belizean economy registered a modest real growth of 1.3% during 1981. The gross domestic product (GDP), based on current prim was $121 million' with an inflation-rate of 10%. The country received $19 million in economic aid during 1981. In early 1981, Belize'e four commercial banks raised the interest on deposits to 15% in an effort to curb capital outflow. During 1981, the financial situation deteriorated somewhat, particularly the balance of payments. For the year the total value of imports exceeded exports by almost $38 million, while the Government continued to maintain a fairly free trade policy. Import duties and term averaged about 8% on essential item and 40% on nonessential ones.

Development in the Upper Texas Gulf Coast during 1945 resulted in the discovery of 23 new fields; one Miocene, eight Frio, three Cockfield-Yegua and eleven along the Wilcox trend. The Wilcox trend appears to he the most active at this time. Producing depths of the new Wilcox discoveries range from 2050 to 10,050 ft. Drilling along the Frio trend has been, for the greater part, projected to the deeper downdip sands. Eighteen of the new discoveries are classified as oil or condensate and five are gas discoveries.

Gold has always been a crisis investment. For centuries gold has been considered globally the money of last resort. In time of war, inflation, financial uncertainty, political upheaval there has with few exceptions always been a flight to gold. The gold paradox simply is that even though we have gone through for the past handful of years all the kinds of. anxieties that would cause the gold price to rise, it has instead dropped drastically. Figure 1. illustrates the important factors that influenced the gold price significantly up or down before 1987. Obviously, since then, even though we have had wars, inflation, financial problems involving breaking banks and thrifts let alone collapsing financial institutions, the gold price has both in the long-term and the short-term trended downwards. Figure 2. depicts the gold price path since 1987. If the presence of time-honored and time-tested factors that should have driven the gold price up didn't do the job, then logic dictates that new factors to drive the gold price down and keep it depressed arose. And they did. But before addressing these depressants permit me to turn to the arcane art of gold price prediction and fore-casting.

"From 2010, the dolomite concentration in the ore fed to the Usoke Plant increased, resulting in a significant increase in the gangue acid consumption and Mg build-up in the circuit, and thus an increase in the Mg:Co ratio in the plant solutions. This affected the Co salt grade, reagent consumption, filtration and drying capacity. Efforts were put in place to minimise the acid consumption and consequently the Mg dissolution (such as use of pre-diluted acid), but the benefits were negligible. Various efforts were then initiated by CHEMAF to improve the cobalt plant productivity (quantity and quality) by process changes, dual precipitation and seed recycle. The positive results obtained in the laboratory were successfully implemented on plant scale. A change in the process from a single-stage precipitation with Na2CO3 to dual precipitation using a combination of Na2CO3 and NaOH improved the capacity of the Co salt filtration by 30%, the Co salt grade and drying capacity by 50%, and reduced the reagent consumption by 22%. Implementation of precipitate seed recycle increased Mg rejection by 40%, improving the Co salt grade from 20% to 25%, and yielding a further drop in reagent consumption. INTRODUCTION CHEMAF (Chemicals of Africa), a mining company located in Katanga province of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been operating since 2003. The Usoke hydrometallurgical plant treats the Cu-Co ore from the Etoile pit to produce Cu cathodes via a leach–solvent-extraction (SX)–electrowinning (EW) circuit and Co salt via a selective precipitation process. The plant was designed to treat run-of-mine (ROM) ore grading 6% Cu and 1.5% Co; but, in 2008, due to a decline in grades, a heavy-media separation (HMS) plant was commissioned to enrich the low-grade ROM (3.5% Cu and 0.5% Co) up to 8% Cu and 1% Co before feeding it to the hydrometallurgical plant. Co is recovered by precipitation of Fe and Al with limestone, followed by Co precipitation as Co carbonate using sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), also known as soda ash. 85% of the final effluent from cobalt precipitation is recycled back to the plant as process water; the balance, 15%, is bled out and compensated for by fresh water top up to control and retard the rate of sodium sulfate build up."

Brass, a deliberate alloy of copper and zinc, has been known since before Roman times. There are two main methods of making brass: (1) Cementation or calamine process - crushed zinc ore (calamine, ZnC03 , or calcined calamine, ZnO), is mixed with charcoal and small pieces of metallic copper and heated to about 900°C in a closed crucible, (2) Alloying - metallic copper and zinc are melted together in a reverberatory furnace. According to most modern authorities (e.g. Smith and Forbes 1955), the calamine process was the only one used in western Europe prior to the 18th century. At that time, the alloying technique began to take over, because metallic zinc was successfully produced on a large scale for the first time. Previously, this had been a problem because zinc vapourizes at 906°C or about the same temperature at which it can be reduced from its ore. Thus, some means had to be devised to collect and condense the zinc vapour (Tylecote 1976). Metallic zinc was known, however, earlier than the 18th century A.O. Several early finds have been made, including a rolled sheet of metallic zinc found in excavations at the Athens Agora dating to the 3rd to 2nd century B. C. (Farnsworth et al. 1949). The Chinese were producing zinc by at least the 10th century A. D. and, by the 17th century, Chinese zinc ingots were being imported into Europe by the Dutch East India Company (Needham 1974). Metallic zinc is also mentioned in several European documentary sources from the 16th century (e.g. Paracelsus, Agricola). This study traces the changes in Western brass making methods from Classical to Renaissance times by examining documentary and archaeological evidence.

IT. OUTLINE OF THE GEOLOGY. 1. Stratigraphy. The pre-Pennsylvanians rocks exposed in and along the borders of the valley-regions of Alabama, range from middle Cambrian to Mississippian (Lower Carboniferous), and at the SW. extremities of the valleys these rocks are overlain by coastal-plain deposits of Cretaceous and Tertiary age. Experience with knowledge-based systems for Layout planning and roadway support dimensioning is on hand in European coal mining since 1985. The systems SOUT (support choice and dimensioning, 1989), SOUT 2, PLANANK (planning of bolt-support), EXOS (layout planning diagnosis. 1994), Sout 3 (1995) have been developed in close cooperation by CdF1. INERIS2. EMN3 (France) and RAG 4, DMT5, TH - Aachen6 (Germany); ISLSP (Integrated Software for Layout and support planning) development is in progress (completion scheduled for July 1996). This new software technology in combination with conventional programming systems. numerical models and existing databases turned out to be suited for setting-up an intelligent decision aid for layout and roadway support planning. The system enhances reliability of planning and optimises the safety-to-cost ratio for ? deformation forecast for roadways in seam and surrounding rocks, consideration of the general position of the roadway in the rock mass (zones of increased pressure, position of operating and mined panels). ? support dimensioning ? yielding arches, rigid arches, porch sets, rigid rings, yielding rings and bolting / shotcreting for drifts ? yielding arches, rigid arches and porch sets for roadways in seam ? bolt support for gateroads (assessment of exclusion criteria and calculation of the bolting pattern) ? bolting of face-end zones (feasibility and safety assessment, stability guarantee).

"PURPOSEThe purpose of this presentation to the Canadian Mineral Processors is to review gold heap leaching systems currently in use and discuss their applicability to Canadian ores. The author's experience with the development and operation of heap leaching spans the past four years at. Pinson, and visits to many ether heap leaches in the western United States.INTRODUCTIONBy way of introduction to the heap leaching system, I will describe in slight detail the method used at Pinson Mining in northern Nevada. This will be followed by a discussion of optional methods in use at other operations visited.The Pinson orebody is a finely disseminated, well-oxidized hydrothermal deposit. Gold particles are finer than 20- microns. The orezone hostrocks are metamorphosed and silici¬fied limestone and shale. Sulfides and carbonaceous materials are negligible.The Pinson open-pit mine has operated since June 1980. It produces 1500 tpd of C.I.P. mill feed averaging .10 oz gold per ton, and 1500 tpd of heap leach material averaging .025 oz gold per ton. Cutoff grades are 0.04 for mill feed, and 0.01 for heap leaching. Stripping ratio is 9 tons of waste and leach grade to 1 ton of mill feed.The project is located in northern Nevada at 4900 feet above sea level.,Winters are fairly severe, with freezing conditions affecting operations from early December through April. Although officially designated as ""high-mountain desert"" country, snow and/or freezing rain occur almost every week of the winter.To date, all Pinson production-scale heap leaching has treated run-90,000 tons of ore are stacked on 300 foot square clay leach pads. Cyanide leach solution is applied through ""wobbler"" sprinklers at .0025 gpm/sq ft for 60 to 90 days. The pregnant solution flows from the heap by gravity to plastic-lined ditches, into a collection sump and then through buried piping to the 2.2 million gallon pregnant solution pond."

Y,:—Since the presentation of my note on this subject at the New York Meeting, Professor Louis has pointed out an error in my statement of his conception of " pitch "—namely, he understands the pitch, in the restricted sense which he proposes, to be the angle of inclination of the axis of an ore-body, measured on the vertical plane drawn through the body; whereas, I represented him as proposing to define " pitch " as the angle of inclination of an oblique body, measured on the plane of the dip, in the direction of the strike. The difference will appear upon consideration of the accompanying isometric projection, Fig. 1, in which ABCD represents the plane of the inclosing ore-deposit (vein or bed), and AC the axis of the oblique ore-shoot. The world’s first copper electrorefinery started production in 1869 at Burry Port in South Wales. Built within the Pembrey Copper Works which had commenced smelting operations in 1849, the new refinery was based on principles described in the British patents issued to J.B. Elkington in 1865 and 1869. Refining principles and practices pioneered there were key to the foundation of modern electro-refining practice in what is now a dominant international industry producing over 16 Mt of electrical grade copper annually. This paper explores the background to this pioneering application of the new, early 19th century, science of “electro-metallurgy” and examines its links to the contemporary decorative electro-plating industry and to the shortcomings of 19th century fire refining. The beginnings and early years of the Pembrey electrorefinery are briefly discussed in relation to the quality, applications and pyrometallurgy of copper at the time. More than a decade would elapse before the birth of the electrical age: the Pembrey refinery may be seen as one of its vital precursors. INTRODUCTION In the 1840s, the new science of ‘electro-metallurgy’, a term coined by Smee in 1841 (Smee, 1841), was being adapted to the decorative electro-deposition of silver in a thin, bright adherent coating that was evidently equal in appearance to traditional silverware (Williams, 1976). Chief among innovative manufacturers of decorative objects who took up the new art of silver electro-plating was the acclaimed firm of G.R. Elkington and Co. of Birmingham, England. The company, which vigorously developed all aspects of electro-metallurgy for the decorative trade, entered the field of ‘electrotyping’, a technique in which the surface features of a mould are copied on an electro-deposited copper layer which, when stripped off, can be used to reproduce an imprint of the mould. In essence, it is a form of casting by electrodeposition, invented in 1837 independently by Jacobi in Russia (Pavlova, 1968) and Spencer in England (Wyatt, 1851).

El presente texto revisa los métodos utilizados en las minas de tajo de abierto como son la perforación, disparo y seguridad y así mejorar los standars y el rendimiento futuro en la industria minera. Respecto al primer método empleado, se analizan los factores que afectan el rendimiento de brocas y cómo dicho factores varían, impidiendo la adaptación de prácticas universales de perforación. Asu vez, estos mismos permiten seleccionar el tipo de broca adecuado y mejorar el máximo rendimiento del mismo. En cuanto la voladura y los explosivos, se revisan las variables fundamentales que ejercen una influencia sobre el resultado de un disparo y así realizar un estudio comparativo de los agentes explosivos en uso, tratando de interpretar el mecanismo de la explosión y a la vez aplicarlo a las diferentes formaciones presentes en Cerro. Finalmente, se describe la organización del sistema de seguridad y las obligaciones de este comité en la industria minera.

Longwall mining is the term used for the underground extraction of a wide and deep panel of coal. Such a panel may be blocked out by one or more entries on either side ("head" and "tail") of a longwall face. If all the entries are pre-driven, the panel extraction is termed longwall retreat mining. With one exception, all the longwall faces in the United States are of this type. (1) prior to the general decline in the rates of production with Continuous Miners, the development of the multiple entries generally kept ahead of the longwall extraction rate. This is no longer the case: longwall extraction rates far exceed the rate of development. In addition to this problem, in newly established mines, the development of a haulage and bleeder system based on multiple entries results in a lead-time of three years or more before longwall mining can be applied. This is one reason why earlier projections and much of the optimism attached to longwall mining as a principal "savior" in the energy crisis should be viewed with some caution.

"In uranium mines, the purification of underground mine air can be accomplished by the removal of dust particles and radon daughters using filters. Full-scale statistically designed experiments with flow rates up to 10,000 cfm have been conducted at Denison Mines Ltd. on mine air filtration with vermiculite as a filter material. Various filtration bed thicknesses were chosen, with different face velocities through each bed thickness. Results on total dust, respirable dust and radon daughter collection efficiencies were analysed statistically. It is shown that these collection efficiencies are directly related to the filter bed thickness. However, the different face velocities seem to affect only the collection of radon daughters. Optimum collection efficiencies for a clean bed of about 30% were found for respirable dust and radon daughters, and about 41>% for total dust, using an 8-in.-thick bed and a face velocity of 500 fpm. Dust build-up on the filter bed during operation led to an increase in collection efficiency, reaching 40 to 60% after two weeks."
