"This study interprets vibrations produced by single underground shots, recorded on surface by 135 digital seismographs laid out in four linear arrays. Several vibration anomalies were observed and are investigated. A novel method of displaying the blast-induced vibration iso-contour data relative to the three-dimensional representations of the geological rock units and structures leads to the following interpretations:• The identified faults commonly dampen or amplify vibrations, on the evidence of the peak particle velocity,• Strong anisotropy of geologic formations produces different vibration attenuation in the various directions of interest,• Low-vibration “depressions” can be related to the presence of faults, and• Higher vibration levels than expected based on ‘scaled-distance’ principles are observed close to intersecting faults.The interpretations from this study document a better understanding of the geotechnical influences on blast induced stress wave propagation in a geologically complex area. The practical benefit of this understanding is better control of surface vibrations, experienced from underground mining activities."

Ilmenite production in Western Australia commenced in 1956. There are now five producers, all in the Bunbury-Capel district, and current total production capacity is about 450,000 t.p.a.The deposits occur near the surface and average between 10 and 50 per cent heavy mineral. About 70-85 per cent of the heavy mineral is ilmenite. Other heavy minerals present include leucoxene, zircon, rutile, monazite, and garnet. The ilmenite contains 52-60 per cent Ti02. and is very low in chromium (0·03-0·04 per cent CrS03)Mining is done by sluicing, drag line excavation, or dredging. Primary concentration of the heavy minerals is achieved by spirals, revolving cones, or Reichert cones. After drying and screening, ilmenite is separated from the heavy mineral concentrate by various types of magnetic separator.Separate leucoxene, zircon, rutile, and monazite concentrates are also produced. Each plant uses a different technique and the processes used include chemical attritioning, screen plate electrostatic separation, high tension rolls, air tables, and dry launders.INTRODUCTIONThe treatment of beach sands in the Bunbury/Capel area for the extraction of ilmenite is a very recent development in the mining industry in Western Australia. Nevertheless, since the commencement of production in 1956, ilmenite has become the sixth most important mineral produced (Table 1).The increasing world recognition of Western Australia as a major producer of ilmenite (Table 2) is due primarily to the low chromic bxide content of the mineral (0' 03-0' 04 per cent Cr203), combined with a medium to high titanium dioxide content (54-60 per cent Ti02), supported by large reserves, a stable government, and close access to good shipping facilities. Ilmenite is. produced from these deposits at low cost which enables the industry to compete on world markets despite high rates for sea freights because of the distance from major markets.

THIS PUBLICATION is the third to be prepared as a result of a cooperative project by the Bureau of Ships and the Bureau of Mines for accumulating literature published on zirconium and hafnium. The undertaking also resulted in the establishment of an information center on zirconium and hafnium at the Bureau of Mines station at Albany, Oreg., for the use of research organizations and others. The present bibliography consists of references (with abstracts) to pertinent literature on zirconium. The first publication in this series was Information Circular 7771, Bibliography of Zirconium, published in April 1957. It consists of 969 abstracted reports and 645 U.S. and foreign patents. The second publication, called a supplement to Information Circular 7771, is numbered Information Circular 7830 and consists of 844 abstracted reports and 62 U.S. and foreign patents. It was published in October 1958.

Uranium exploration over a wide area of the Southern Frame Embayment, South Australia, has defined a number of Lower Tertiary fluvial palaeochannels incised in older rocks. The buried channels contain similar stratigraphicsequences of interbedded sand, silt, and clay, probably derived from the adjacent uranium-rich Olarv Provinee. Uranium mineralization is pervasive within two major palaeochannels, and four small uranium deposits have been found in the basal sands of these channel sequences, at the margins of extensive tongues of limonitic sand.One of the channels is examined in detail with respect to channel morphology, stratigraphy, and rock alteration and the geology and ore controls of the contained uranium deposits are described.A geochemical zonation reflected by variation in limonite, pyrite, carbon, and humic malleI' is defined across one of the deposits. A genetic model is proposed suggesting formation by a uraniferous geochemical cell which migrated down the stream gradient and concentrated uranium on its lateral margins adjacent to the channel bank.

In general, the metallurgical industry has so far been slower than the chemical industry to adopt ion exchange materials for industrial processes. The atomic energy industry presents a marked exception to this general situation, and the literature shows a rapidly increasing use of ion exchange techniques for the recovery of atomic energy metals on scales ranging from the ultra micro up to that of the largest mining operations. In many cases, the processes used would be equally applicable to more common metals and it is hoped that this review will be of interest to metallurgists outside the specialised atomic energy field. The review is intended to describe developments of ion exchange processes made during the last three years. Earlier studies have been summarised by Kunin and Preuss (1956) and Roland (1957). In order to restrict the number of references discussed, purely analytical procedures have been omitted and only those processes which have been conducted on a reasonably large scale or which, from their nature, areclearly capable of being upscaled, have been considered. The mineralogy, textures, and genetic significance of a silver-rich siderite vein and an apparently co-genetic galena vein from the South mine, Broken Hill are discussed.Both veins cut sharply across the Main Lode Horizon and appear to be coeval with thc A.B.H. Consols lode.The minerals of thc siderite vein apparently result from the preferential leaching of silver from Main Lode Horizon ore with a demonstrable "breakdown series" commencing with tetrahedrite, passing through silver sulpho-salts, and ending with simple binary compounds or with elemental silver.The siderite vein has been deposited by metahydrothermal fluids along the lines of Schneiderhohn's "secondary hydrothermal" mineralization.

In a previous paper of this series (1) ,t it was shown that during the creep of single crystals of lead, deformation proceeded to some extent by means of slip on the octahedral plane. This was demonstrated by the formation of slip lines on the surface of the specimens. At first, a few broad bands appeared after a small amount of extension had taken place; then, as extension proceeded, more and finer lines made their appearance until the whole of the specimen surface was covered.The present paper deals with the process of deformation of the creep specimens as revealed by X-ray examination..By the use of this method, the changes taking place in the crystal structure can be observed.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe method of preparation of the specimens, their size and the purity of the lead employed have been reported elsewhere (1). At frequent intervals, the specimens were dismantled from the test rack and X-ray back reflection photographs were taken. The specimens were so marked and set up on the X-ray machine that the same spot on the specimen surface was always examined.Copper radiation was employed, the tube voltage and current being 45 kV. and 25 m.a. respectively and the exposure time 2 hrs. The slit diameter was 1 mm.

This paper presents a case study in West Malaysia for passive piles failure in very soft marine clay in open excavation. In this particular case, the thickness of the very soft marine clay ranges from 5 m to 7 m (16 ft to 23 ft) from the ground surface. Preliminary site investigation reported SPT ?N? value of zero for the very soft marine clay. The design was based on a deep foundation utilizing driven piles to support the superstructure. During pile cap construction, the piles were subjected to uncontrolled open excavation, inducing bending moment in the piles, resulting in some cracked and broken piles. Analyses were carried out using an existing three-dimensional finite element code with a non-linear soil model to predict the response of these piles during excavation. Finally, the predictions of pile responses during excavation were compared satisfactorily with the observed results.

Bateman Engineering Project's acid-plant track record goes back to 1977. Bateman Engineering can design sulphuric plants based on gas from sulphur burners, metallurgical off gas as well as pyrite roasting systems. Bateman Engineering has a technology marketing agreement with NORAM Engineering Ltd of Canada to provide state-of-the-art, well-proven acid plant technology, and also has access to roaster technology from several sources, including Chinese technology. Utilising the Noram technology agreement, Bateman was awarded the Engineering and Procurement (EP) contract for the Ambatovy Nickel Project, Sulphuric Acid Facilities in 2007. This is the first Greenfield sulphuric acid plant Bateman has designed for many years, producing a combined 5,500tpd, and is one of the largest sulphur burning acid plants in the world. This paper gives an overview of the sulphuric acid plant for the Ambatovy Nickel Project, advantages of Noram?s unique technology on offer, an overview of work conducted on a recent study of an pyrite roasting acid plants as well as a new technology currently being developed by Bateman for the direct combustion of solid sulphur to form sulphur dioxide.

Roof support systems are necessary to provide stable mine openings and much research has been conducted to design a variety of roof support systems that will function in various manners to ensure that stable ground conditions are achieved. Despite these advancements in technology, mistakes continue to be made in the evaluation and/or installation that significantly degrade the support capability or lead to erroneous determinations of support expectations. The purpose of this paper is to discuss misconceptions about how roof supports perform and factors that impact their performance. The goal is to present practical information that will assist mine operators and engineers in selecting, installing, and evaluating roof support systems properly, and help them to avoid mistakes that can lead to erroneous expectations and potentially catastrophic results that may lead to roof falls. The paper is limited to a discussion of secondary roof support systems and powered roof supports such as longwall shields.

The use of black and white and colour infrared film in remote sensing of natural resources is reviewed. In heavlly-forested areas such as New Zealand, the main value of the method is in surveying the vegetation cover to detect the existence of plant communities characteristic of specific geological formations. By contrast in arid areas of Australia where the vegetation cover is sparse and where rocks and soils are well exposed, the method can be used in detecting different rock types or other geological differences.

Kansanshi Copper Smelter began operation in March 2015. The smelter features a single Isasmelt furnace for smelting, one 6-in-line electric furnace for matte-settling and slag-cleaning duties, four Peirce- Smith converters and two rotary anode furnaces. A 1,450 t/day oxygen plant and a 4,085 t/day sulphuric acid plant are included in the smelter operations. This paper gives an overview of the operational performance to date with summary data for each smelter section. Challenges such as an unforeseen refractory failure in the Isasmelt furnace in 2016 are discussed. Design improvements around the electric furnace are mentioned. Plans for potential future improvements are put into context. A consistent focus on operations, maintenance and continuous improvement has seen the smelter easily achieve its nameplate capacity of 1.2 million tonnes per annum of copper concentrate throughput. The smelter now operates consistently at a concentrate throughput rate of 1.38 million tonnes per annum of copper concentrate. INTRODUCTION The smelter was commissioned in March 2015. Design and commissioning of the smelter have been discussed by de Vries, Hunt, Hanschar and Louie (2016). The smelter rapidly ramped up to achieve nameplate production (1.2 million tonnes per year concentrate) and in 2018 operated consistently at the rate of 1.38 million tonnes per year concentrate. This paper presents major operational data for each section of the plant and describes significant events and improvements during the first four years of operation. The smelter flowsheet is shown in Figure 1.

This Bureau of Mines study identifies and examines the costs of Federal, State, and local environmental protection controls on domestic phosphate rock mining, The costs include the expenditures needed to comply with government regulations and the effects that these expenditures and regulations have on supply. The study analyzes costs of environmental impact assessments, air and water quality standards, reclamation laws, potential solid waste controls, and local government restrictions. In addition, an industry survey and the Bureau's Minerals Availability System (MAS) are used to evaluate land management policies that restrict access to phosphate resources, Conclusions drawn from these analyses confirm that (1) domestic phosphate mining has incurred substantial control costs and may be subject to significant new regulatory costs in the next several years, (2) certain environmental controls can discourage mining investment, (3) environmental policies governing land-use controls affect the disposition of sizable phosphate resources, and are key determinants in the development of those resources on the Federal do- main, and (4) environmental costs could diminish the competitiveness of domestic producers.

"In regular CIL circuits, activated carbon is used for two purposes: avoiding solid/liquid separation after cyanide leaching, and minimizing gold losses in the tails. The carbon distribution and gold profiles in the successive CIL stages are operating variables, not objectives. When the CIL feed contains a preg robbing constituent however, such as native carbon, there will be competition for gold cyanide and this conflicts with minimizing of losses of gold to CIL tails. This paper examines some of the limitations of activated carbon in CIL circuits handling preg robbing Carlin Trend ores.INTRODUCTION Carbon-In-Leach (CIL) has been a great success treating regular gold ores, but the technology is still challenged by preg robbing feedstocks. Little information is available in the gold milling literature on CIL gold extraction from “free” milling gold ores which are preg robbing, or on autoclave discharge (POX’ed) slurries of double refractory ores. Neither feedstock is readily available for experimentation. No literature reference could be found describing deliberate modifications to CIL operations or CIL circuits due to the presence of two types of carbon: “native” and activated. There is some literature on the gold cyanide adsorption activity of native carbons (Schmitz, Duyvesteyn, Johnson, Enloe & McMullen, 2001). Various tests have been devised to measure this activity, commensurate with CIP and CIL practices (Tretbar, Arehart & Graves). In this paper, the term “native” carbon indicates (severely) preg robbing carbonaceous materials found in gold ores. There is considerable literature on the gold cyanide adsorption activity of man-made “activated carbons”. Various tests have been devised to measure this activity, commensurate with CIP and CIL practices. These tests are comparative, i.e. results relate to a standard carbon and depend on the test methodology and carbon history. The test results are equilibrium oriented, hence of limited value to CIL circuit designers or plant operators handling preg robbing solids; in CIL circuits most carbons are not loaded to capacity. Information on gold cyanide adsorption and desorption kinetics might be more relevant and that is one subject explored in this paper."

This international symposium was convened to assess the current state of knowledge concerning the health hazards that might be associated with the ingestion and inhalation of fibrous particles produced from the processing of taconite ore. Concern about fibrous particles in taconite arose from their similarities to amphibole asbestos minerals that are known to be human carcinogens. The mineralogical characteristics of asbestos fibers are reviewed and compared with the fibrous particles known to be present in taconite ore from the eastern end of the Iron Range. The epidemiological and experimental animal studies for asbestos-related disease (including gastrointestinal cancer from asbestos in dinking water)were critically evaluated andcompared to those of the fibrous minerals in the taconite. The focus was on the amphiboles in the cummingtonite?grunerite and tremolite?ferroactinolite series and other fibrous particles in both the Iron Range and the Duluth Complex. This included examination of the reported occurrence of any asbestiform ferroactinolite, crocidolite asbestos, chrysotile asbestos, etc. In addition, an effort was made to provide a scientific framework to address fibrous minerals, which may be associated with nonferrous mineral deposits in the Duluth Complex. State-of-the-art risk assessment models for asbestos were presented. Risk assessment scenarios were developed for taconite-derived fibers at environmental exposure levels related to the operation of the Silver Bay taconite processing facility. These calculated risks were found to be trivial even after it was assumed that all mineral fibers were as carcinogenic as amphibole asbestos.

Although, for about a half-century the percentage of coal production provided through strip mining has steadily increased, recent trends indicate that a peak in percentage (not tonnage) is being approached, principally because of the decline in economic adrantage enjoyed by strip mining compared to underground mining. Factors contributing to the decline are the decrease in the margin of advantage in manpower requirements held by strip mining; an increase in depth and volume of overhurden, requiring larger equipment and capital investment; increasing lack of reserve land blocks large enough to support extensive strip mining operations; more stringent legislation for reclamation of stripped land, with increasingly higher costs of such reclamation; and the increasing costs of land surface rights for strip mining. Already there has been a peak and suhsequent decline in relative importance of strip mining insome major Eastern coal-producing states; trends indicate that a peaking for the whole Eastern region is on the way. Although, in the West the pressures are less severe, they will, nevertheless, reduce to an increasing degree the advantage that strip mining has possessed. For about half a century, strip mining has been providing an ever-increasing share of total coal output in the United States, and in the past 30 years this share has grown from less than 8% to 33.7%, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 1 also shows that strip mining is gaining faster in the West than in the East. From 1961 to 1967, output from strip mines grew 63.6 million toqs, or 52.2%. Certainly there is nothing in such performance to indicate any peaking in the level of strip coal-mine production. But the fact is that, if not in actual tonnage, strip mining appears to be reaching its peak in relative importance, at least east of the Mississippi River. And the area east of the Mississippi provides 90.0% of the strip and 94.9% of the total coal production of the nation. The relative economic advantage which spurred strip mining's growth for a third of a century has been diminishing markedly in recent years. Fig. 2 shows evidence of this decline. From 1947 until 1961, strip tonnage output remained fairly stable, at the end of the period showing only a 12.5% decline. Meanwhile, underground coal production fell 44.5%. As the result of the greater decline in underground coal, strip coal in 1961 furnished 30.3% of the total coal produced, compared to only 22.1% in 1947. In the succeeding six years, however, underground coal output increased by 76.5 million tons, while strip output increased only 63.6 million. Further evidence of the strengthening of underground coal's relative position — or if you will, the weakening of strip coal's position — can be found in the major coal stripping states: Illinois, West Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and West Virginia, which in 1966 provided 80% of the nation's strip coal. Fig. 3 shows what has been happening in three states lying in the Appalachian field and in the total output of these three states. In the figure, the column height represents the output of coal mined by all methods. The number at the base of each column is the percentage mined by stripping. In Pennsylvania and Ohio, the percentage of strip mining increased between 1956 and 1961, but by 1966 had declined from the 1961 level. In West Virginia, a decline occurred during the first five years but was followed by a rise. In January 1968, Coal Age published an article listing the locations and capacities of new large mines in the planning and construction stages that would be operating by 1968-1971. In the presence of oxygen, galena is oxidized in an aqueous medium containing ammonium acetate in accordance with the following reaction: PbS + 1/2 0, + 2 NH~Ac -» PbAc, + So + 2 NH: + H2O. This reaction was studied in an autoclave under oxygen pressure by polarographic measurement of the concentration of lead ion in solution. Oxidation rate is parabolic. The reaction products are lead acetote and elemental sulfur, the latter forming a film on the galena crystal. Reaction kinetics appear to be determined by the diffusion of lead from the galena phase to the solution interface through the film of sulfur. RECENT applications of pressure leaching on a commercial scale have emphasized the metallurgical importance of the oxidation of sulfide minerals in aqueous media by oxygen under pressure. Research experience has shown that sulfates, thio-nates, and metal oxides are the products of humid oxidation of sulfide minerals in basic solutions. The metal oxides may be solubilized in the presence of a complexing ion.' Certain oxide minerals are also amenable to treatment by this type of oxidation.' Several kinetic studies have been made of reactions of this type. Stenhouse' found that pyrite (FeS?) oxidized in a sodium hydroxide solution to produce a soluble sulfate and an insoluble layer of iron oxide and that the kinetics of the reaction were controlled by oxygen diffusion through the oxide layer. Andersen' studied the oxidation of galena (PbS) in a sodium hydroxide solution under oxygen pressure. He found the lead and sulfur to be simultaneously oxidized to produce plum bite ions and sulfate ions, and that the reaction rate was proportional to the surface area of the galena. The kinetics appeared to be determined by the reaction of oxygen and water with the galena surface. In each of the above reactions the metal and sulfur components of the mineral were oxidized simultaneously and at equal rates. In the present study the alkaline medium has been replaced by an approximately neutral solution of ammonium acetate in which lead sulfate is soluble. Under the conditions no sulfate was produced and no sulfur could be detected in the solution. The metal component of the mineral was solubilized and the liberated sulfur remained as a film of elemental sulfur on the surface of the galena crystal. A kinetic study of this reaction was undertaken to establish the kinetic mechanism and to determine the rate controlling step. Specific reaction rates were determined by oxidizing crystals of galena of measured surface areas in an autoclave maintained at the desired temperature and oxygen pressure. The rate of reaction was followed by measuring the concentration of lead in the ammonium acetate solution with a cathode ray polarograph, employing stationary platinum electrodes incorporated in the autoclave. Emphasis is placed on Australian contributions, and their impact on gold metallurgy. Consideration is given to the future development of selective solvent extractants, ion exchange resins or alternative reagents for cyanide.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health designed and conducted a study in an underground metal mine to assess the effects of selected diesel emissions control technologies on the concentrations of diesel particulate matter and gases in underground mine air. The control technologies studied included diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems, filtration system with disposable filter elements, diesel oxidation catalytic converter, and biodiesel blends. Each technology was tested on a mining vehicle operated in an isolated area of an underground mine supplied with fresh air. These isolated zone tests allowed for the operation of vehicles under conditions and over duty cycles that closely mimic actual duty cycles of production equipment. The DPF systems reduced the elemental carbon (EC) concentrations in mine air between 88% and 99%. The same systems reduced total particulate matter (TPM) concentrations in mine air by approximately 75%. The biodiesel blends B20 and B50 caused a reduction in the EC concentrations of 26% and 48%, respectively. Those blends also reduced TPM concentrations by 9% and 24%, respectively. The use of #1 diesel fuel reduced EC concentration by 13% compared to #2 diesel fuel. An increase in nitrogen dioxide concentration of up to two times was seen when platinum-catalyzed DPF systems were tested.
