MANY fields have been zoned by nature with shales and intermediate waters between oil zones. Limitations thus imposed have been the basis on which the field was developed. In contrast thereto, in the Ventura Avenue Field, nature proved more generous. Always expecting to find such similar limitations, operators drilled deeper and deeper into the oil zone without finding any distinctive shale bodies other that the Gosnell shale and only one intermediate water, which became the point below which the final water shut-off of each well was made. Thus, on top of the structure, about 3300 ft. of oil-bearing zone has been penetrated below this intermediate w9ter-a distance of 4000 ft. below the Gosnell shale. At first it seemed that the greater the penetration in the zone, the better the well. The error of this assumption became evident

INTRODUCTION When divers discovered that sections of a tunnel housing the pipeline that conveys wastewater from the Charleston Peninsula to the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Facility had caved in, the Charleston Commissioners of Public Works(CPW) moved quickly to determine a long term solution for the city’s collection system, immediately focusing on the Ashley River sewer tunnel along the western boundary of the peninsula. Working with the Charleston community, as well as federal, state, and local officials, CPW developed a fast track yet long life design that can be used as a model for underground construction of tunnels in urban areas. The paper that follows summarizes key aspects of the Ashley River sewer tunnel project. HISTORICAL CHARLESTON Charleston, South Carolina is a culturally significant and historic city that was originally settled in 1670. There are over 100 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places within the Charleston area. Additionally, the first shots of the American Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter in the Charleston Harbor in 1861. As one can imagine, tourism generates significant business for the area with over 1.5 million people visiting Charleston each year. No project, especially one that requires digging, is done within the old city on the Charleston peninsula without careful planning. Many precautions are necessary to prevent damage or disruption to the historical properties. The Ashley River sewer tunnel project is exclusively in the old city. A lot of work was done during the design phase to minimize the impact to historical properties. Some of this work included: an archeological study (where pre-digs were monitored at all shaft sites by an archeologist); a building/structure assessment study (where structures near a shaft site were completely surveyed and cataloged); and an environmental study.

The Pilbara region of Western Australia is well known for its abundant exports of hematite-goethite deposits, which have been mined and exported since the 1960s. Magnetite has also been mined in Australia throughout this period, although historically of much lower production volumes (WA Iron Ore profile, 2016). Magnetite offers a source supply of material >66 per cent iron grade product, which is used as premium feed (predominantly pellets) to blast furnaces or specialised steel mills.The Iron Bridge project area contains outcropping magnetite and hematite banded iron formation (BIF), which within the region was recognised as having potential to host economic mineralisation during the 1960s. Development within the project area, however, did not commence until Fortescue Metals Group acquired the tenements based on a 2004 agreement, formed a joint venture with interested groups and then initiated an assessment for magnetite (rather than hematite) mining potential. The combined deposits now have an identified large mineral resource inventory, with test work demonstrating they are able to produce a magnetite concentrate of greater than 66 per cent Fe over an extended mine life. This concentrate would be suitable for forming pellets or feed for direct reduced iron products.The deposits form a singular orebody, approximately 12 km in length by 1 km in width and extending to depths beyond 600 m. The four main deposits are geographically separate and have subtle mineralogical differences, thought driven by the degree of deformation and alteration within each area.Definition of the stratigraphy, structure and key mineralogy of the deposits has been carried out through several stages of exploration and project development. This has also included recent mining and processing of more than 1 Mt of feed material to an on-site processing facility. This demonstrated at a production scale that dry plus wet processing techniques can efficiently separate the magnetite from the gangue minerals to form a suitable (marketable) product.Geometallurgical classification of the host stratigraphy has been carried out from analysing the high volume of quantitative data available for this deposit. This has allowed definition of mappable units within the fresh BIF to be used as a driver in mine scheduling, delivering optimal feed to the processing plant.Construction of mine and processing facilities is expected to commence once all technical risks have been addressed, market conditions are deemed appropriate and approval is given by the joint venture partners.CITATION:Simpson, C, 2017. Recent developments in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) once-through supercritical technology (OTSC) have enabled this technology to be offered as a utility-scale alternative competing head-to-head with pulverized fuel (PF) OTSC offerings. One clear example is the CFB supercritical unit at the Lagisza Power Plant in Poland, owned by PoludniowyKoncernEnergetyczny SA (PKE). This unit has now been in commercial operation for three full years, exhibiting very good performance, and has validated Foster Wheeler's performance model at this utility scale as well as for units in the 600 MWe and 800 MWe size ranges offering net efficiency of -43 per cent (LHV basis). This operating unit has also proven the use of the world's first FW/BENSONTM vertical-tube OTSC low mass flux technology. Since the Lagisza original international tender specified OTSC PF technology, it is important to note that the alternative selection of CFB OTSC technology over conventional PF technology is of historic significance, not only for the validation of the CFB supercritical platform as a viable alternative to conventional PF technology, but it also positions the CFB OTSC with fuel flexibility for offering of sizes up to and including 800 MWe units. This paper explores the differences between CFB OTSC technology and standard PF OTSC in utility power generation. Selection criteria, fuel burning range in both technologies, and other selection drivers are discussed. Economic analysis of both technologies, based on existing cases, is also provided. Also discussed are the technical advantages and uses of each technology. Foster Wheeler has recently been awarded a contract for four units of CFB OTSC technology, which utilizes a 2 on 1 configuration of two 550 MWe CFB OTSC boilers on two single 1000 MWe turbines. Essentially this provides a fuel-flexible low-emissions alternative to a 2 x 1000 MWe solid fuel power block.

From observations of the linear displacement of oil by water from a porous medium as visualized in transparent models, new insight into the mechanism of vircous fingering, as occurring in the case of unfavorable oil-water viscosity ratios, has been obtained. A mathematical description of the observed phenomena leads to formulas. expressing both oil production and pressure drop across the formation as a func-tion of cumulative water injection with the oil-water viscosity ratio as a parameter. Theoretical results are compared with those obtained from scaled laboratory experiments in sand-filled rubes in which water was injected at the one end and production was obtained from the other end. In the second part of the paper the same principles are used to calculate a more realistic production scheme in which production of oil and water is obtained from wells regularly distributed over the field. Results show satisfactory agreement with production data of an actual oil field. Application of the theory is extremely simple as only a limited number of readily available parameters have to be known and results are presented in an analytical form. INTRODUCTION When oil is displaced from a porous medium by water having a viscosity lower than the oil. the oil-water interface is essentially unstable and has the tendency to break up into what are called "fingers" or "streamers". This Viscous fingering has been noted before by Engelberts and Klinkenberg' and has recently been demonstrated in transparent models by van Meurs-. It is highly questionable whether it is at all possible to perform relative permeability measurements In the laboratory reproducing the same distribution of water and oil in the cores as Present in practice. Therefore, we based our descriptive theory on an idealized model which was "tailored" to the fingering mechanism as observed in transparent models under scaled conditions. This approach was the more attractive, as a highly simplified model had already yielded an adequate description of the process. Though we are aware our theoretical approach can be extended in several ways, it is given here in its simplest form to explain the fundamental principles and to avoid complicated formulas. SIMPLEST CASE OF A LINEAR DRIVE Observations and Theoretical Model In Fig. 1 a series of photographs shows how water penetrates into a formation saturated with an oil which is considerably more viscous than the water. The technique for obtaining these photographs, using transparent models, has already been described?. The fingers can be clearly observed and are seen to be mainly parallel to the flow direction. Note that the contours of these fingers are not smooth but show protrusions of water enclosing oil pockets.

"The Quintette coal property lies in the Rocky Mountain foothills of northeastern British Columbia (see Figure 1). Quintette and the adjacent Bullmoose property of Teck Corporation are soon to become the first commercial coal mines in the Peace River Coal Field, which is estir1ated to contain 10 billion tonnes of metallurgical coal reserves.Denison Mines Limited acquired the original Quintette coal licenses in 1969 and 1970. Exploration began soon after and the first feasibility study was conducted in 1975. Denison devoted the following six years to extensive planning and feasibility studies of the project. During this period, the provincial and federal governments also undertook studies to assess infrastructure requirements and economic viability of development in this part of the province. Many of the proposed mine sites such as Bullmoose and Quintette were at least 100 to 150 kilometres from the towns of Chetwynd and Dawson Creek, the nearest centres serviced by good highways and a railroad, and a complete network of services would have to be provided if such mines were to be developed. The overall project became known as the North East Coal Development.Concurrently with the feasibility studies, numerous technical and sales missions to Japan were made by representatives of Canadian industry and government, culminating in January 1981 with agreements for Quintette Coal Limited and Teck Corporation to supply a total of 115 million tonnes 8 million tonnes per year for 15 years of primarily metallurgical coal to the Japanese Steel Industry."

"Abstract: The paper describes a large innovative project completed in 2012-20123 by Trevi Group, to develop equipment capable to install ultra-deep diaphragm wall. The project highlights the capacity of SOILMEC to design and build a new hydromill able to reach an unprecedented depth of 250 m, including new devices for monitoring and correct the verticality. The entire project can take advantage of the long and solid experience matured by Trevi and Rodio (now part of Trevi Group), developing in house or, else, select the elements necessary for a high quality product in the ground.The paper describes the results of different systems used to monitor and control the verticality and the twist of panel during excavation, together with the method used to pour concrete. Finally, the results of verification coring and lab tests on concrete samples recovered at various depths are discussed. The test field has been supervised by representatives of three of the major Italian Universities, and lasts almost one year from August 2012 to June 2013.The verification holes made use of an innovative combination of directional drilling and coring, to check the quality of the plastic concrete for the full length of the panel. The data confirmed that the test panel has high quality concrete, meeting or exceeding to the prefixed requirements.With this test, super-deep cut-off walls reaching depths of 250 m have become a reality. This would change the perspectives of dam engineering both for existing dams rehabilitation and for new dams design and construction. With the execution of this test panel, the technology of milled concrete cutoffs has made a ”quantum leap”, pushing the limit of practicable dams."

LTl’s MapStar LPS (laser positioning system) utilize both tripod mounted and hand held reflectorless distance meters. These are eye safe, easy-to-use, and specifically designed to endure the harsh environment characteristic to the mining, quarry and explosives industries. Survey data collected by the systems is digitally stored in a ruggedized data collector and then processed with a specialized, interactive software program, which can be run on any standard PC. Win Prof, the Windows-based analytical software package is used to reduce the data for generating bench face profiles, surfaces, volumes, estimating true burdens and mining ratio calculations. In addition, the software has many other built-in routines to calculate powder factors, toe shear, to map structural contacts and to predict the flyrock potential based on the Burden to Energy ratios. An extensive, built-in library of explosive’s data facilitates these calculations. It will also conform automatically to user-specified minimum and/or maximum burden in relation to the explosive energy, hole diameter and bench geometry - for both vertical and inclined holes. Numerical data can be represented in 2D or 3D to emphasize the hole-burden-face relationships.In this workshop, the MapStar LPS instruments and Win Prof analytical software will be thoroughly demonstrated. Demonstrations include equipment configuration, typical field setups and several effective survey procedures, including processing of some sample data.

"Gas dispersion studies have been used to benchmark and optimize plant flotation performance for more than a decade, although this technology is not as widely in use as it likely should be based on the significant improvements that have been reported. Part of the reason may be a general lack of awareness within the industry of just what these improvements have been. This paper reviews a number of the reported case studies, groups them into categories of improvement, and draws some general conclusions. The paper will be of interest to plant engineers and technology providers seeking new approaches and tools for improving their own and clients’ processes.INTRODUCTIONThe sector of flotation hydrodynamics that is now known as gas dispersion technology, and the corresponding terminology, had its beginnings in the 1980’s and early 1990’s in the laboratories of McGill University where the students of Prof. J.A. Finch and Dr. C. Gomez conducted studies of gas holdup, superficial gas rate and water recovery on laboratory flotation columns (Laplante et al., 1983; Xu et al., 1991;, Banisi and Finch, 1994; Finch et al., 1999; Nesset, 2011). Sensors were developed for gas holdup (eg), gas rate (Jg) and bubble size (Db) distribution (Tavera et al., 1996: Finch et al., 1999; Dahlke et al., 2001; Chen at al., 2001; Hernandez-Aguilar et al, 2002, 2005). The sensor measurements were rapidly adapted for use in mechanical flotation machines in plant environments (Gomez and Finch, 2002; Gomez et al., 2003; Cooper et al, 2004; Torrealba-Vargas et al, 2004; Nesset et al., 2007). Somewhat parallel developments were being conducted by Gorain and colleagues at the University of Queensland’s JKMRC on pilot and industrial flotation machines using the McGill approach but utilizing alternate sensor designs for eg, Jg and Db (Gorain et al., 1997, 1999; Schwarz and Alexander, 2006) to link flotation kinetics to bubble surface area flux (Sb). Early industrial applications were those led by the university teams from McGill (Canada), the JKMRC (Australia) and the University of Santa Maria (Chile) at plants in North and South America, Australia, South Africa, Asia and Europe. Industrial organizations that brought the technology on-board in the early 2000’s included Teck Resources (then Teck Cominco), COREM, Vale (then Inco), Anglo American Platinum. Several of the major flotation cell manufacturers also purchased the McGill bubble viewer technology for their own equipment studies. The sensors have continued to evolve with multiple and continuous measurement of Jg (Torrealba-Vargas and Finch, 2006, Bartolacci et al., 2008), gas holdup by acoustic means (O’Keefe, 2007) and a combined Jg-Db device called the Anglo Bubble Sizer (Harbort and Schwarz, 2010). A review of the gas dispersion technology use and development have been provided by Gomez and Finch (2002), Harbort and Schwarz (2010) and Nesset (2010)."

The application of instrumentation to better understand and improve production blasting is one of the most fruitful areas of explosives and blasting research. The majority of instrumented studies of production blasting have relied on the extrapolation of far field measurements to postulate blast performance in regions of interest closer to the charge where rock breaking takes place. However, the nonlinear and dissipative nature of the quantities being measured raises serious questions as to the accuracy and validity of such extrapolations.

During the years 1983-1987, a research programme, jointly performed by the steel producers ARBED, British Steel Corporation, Peine-Salzgitter, Unimetal, and co-sponsored by the European Community for Steel and Coal (ECSC), has been carried out on steel H-piles of different shapes. The initial aim of the testing programme has been the improvement of bearing capacity, both in sandy and clayey soils. At two test sites, standard H-beams are compared to H-piles with different types of laggings or to H-piles grouted both under low and high pressure. In this paper and in view of the open european market in 1992, the H-pile capacities and their corresponding allowable loads, determined from codes, recommendations and computation procedures in use in Belgium/Luxembourg (B/L), France (F), Federal Republic of Germany (G), and the United Kingdom (UK) as well as their evaluation from dynamic CAPWAP and Case methods are compared to the static capacities measured in-situ. In addition, procedures for estimating the load/movement behaviour of H-piles from CPT, pressuremeter, and CAPWAP are compared to the measured curves.

Small scale' table concentration tests have many critics. Many metallurgists consider that such tests are of problematical value because of the difficulties involved in conducting and interpreting them.Many kinds of small-scale ore dressing tests are difficult to conduct, and there is, perhaps, good reason for thinking that table concentration tests are amongst the most difficuIt.Interpretation of results from small-scale tests is the responsibility of the metallurgists and engineers in charge, and it is often held that small-scale table concentration tests are particularly difficmlt to interpret.TESTING FOR TABLE CONCENTRATIONOn analysis it appears that the difficulties encountered in conducting small-scale table concentration tests are of three fairly distinct kinds. Firstly, there are difficulties due inherently to the smallscale nature of the operations; for example the smaller width of all mineral bands on the table and the less complete separation due to the shorter length of travel between the feed and discharge points.Secondly, there are the effects of batch operation owing to the fact that the mineral particles behave differently during the initial period when the sample is just beginning to spread over the table, the middle period when feed and discharge are even and continuous, and the final stage, when the last of the sample has been added and the table is beginning to empty itself.

"The Witwatersrand Basin is the heart of South Africa’a gold mining industry. The cluster of gold mines located in the Witwatersrand Basin generates a significant amount of mine tailings, which have adverse effects on the environment and ecological systems. In addition, disposal costs are very high. The exponential population growth in the Witwatersrand area has resulted in pressure on the reserves of traditional building materials. Quarrying for natural construction material is very expensive and damages the landscape. This work therefore examines the use of gold mine tailings in the production of bricks.Different mixing ratios of gold tailings, cement, and water were used. The resulting bricks were then cured in three different environments - sun dried, oven dried at 360°C, and cured in water for 24 hours. The bricks were then tested for unconfined compressive strength, water absorption, and weight loss. The results showed that the mixture with more cement than tailings had a compressive strength of approximately 530 kN/m2. It was also found that the best brick curing system was in a water environment. Bricks made from tailings cost more than conventional bricks because of the higher quantity of cement used, but the manufacturing process consumes less water. Overall, the results indicated that gold mine tailings have a high potential to substitute for the natural materials currently used in brickmaking.Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc. Top-down construction (or cut and cover construction) is providing important advantages when comparing with conventional construction techniques for commercial developments with deep basements, underground car parks or near surface infrastructure and traffic tunnels. Main features are substantially reduced restrictions to surface usage, avoidance of intervention with adjacent property, provision of rigid substructures resulting in minimal deforma­tions and settlements and, last but not least, accelerated construction pro­gramme. The present contribution illustrates the construction method in general and elaborates in detail on the special foundation works for a major urban commercial high rise development requiring a six level basement structure.

The void growth and coalescence in model materials involving a pre-existing three dimensional void array (i.e. multiple layers of a void array) was studied by X-ray computed tomography (XCT) coupled with in situ tensile deformation. To reduce the recording time, a new technique called fast tomography was employed. The model materials used in this paper were fabricated by the combination of an ultra-short pulsed laser machining system and a diffusion bonding technique, and two different types of arrays were prepared namely, FCC 1 and FCC 2 type array. This methodology allowed the authors to capture the entire process of growth and coalescence events of a void array embedded in the metal matrix. The failures in the both materials involved internal necking and shear localization. One of the highlights of this paper is that the plastic strain at the onset of void coalescence was measured for each model material. These values are in fact the adequate values to be compared with the coalescence strain predicted by existing void coalescence models such as the Brown and Embury model, the Thomason model and the Pardoen and Hutchinson model. The comparison suggested that the Brown and Embury model underestimated the coalescence in neither of the current model materials, while the Thomason model and the Pardoen and Hutchinson model showed a quite good agreement with the result for FCC 1 material. On the other hand the result from FCC 2 material agreed with none of the models probably due to the geometry of the void array that is not compatible with the existing models.

Pumpable roof supports provide an alternative approach to secondary support in underground mining. Unlike all other supports that are either partially or fully prefabricated prior to being transported into the mine, the pumpable support is fabricated in place in the mine entry. This reduces the underground material handling efforts and thus the injuries historically associated with in-mine support construction. On-site fabrication also facilitates application of the support in areas that are inaccessible to transportation equipment such as scoops or rail cars, making it ideal for many bleeder applications. One of the main advantages of the pumpable support is that it fully bridges from the mine floor to the roof, thereby eliminating the requirement of ?topping off? the support with wooden wedges or crib blocks that soften most other support responses. This report examines the development of modern pumpable roof support technology and provides a full description of the performance capabilities of each of the support products now on the market.

As part of the New York City’s redevelopment of the far west side of mid-town Manhattan, this project will add 1.5 miles of twin bored tunnel to No. 7 Subway Line. The proposed alignment extending from the Times Square Station west beneath 41stStreet turning south under Eleventh Avenue and terminating at 25th Street will include two new stations. The tunnels and station caverns will be primarily constructed in the Manhattan Schist, and will pass in close proximity to several major overly ingstructures. This paper discusses the lithology and structural discontinuities of rockmass along the project alignment, tunnel and cavern rock loading, groundwater hydrology, groundwater quality, groundwater treatment and sustainable design.
