This paper gives an account of the development of a technique whereby the vertical limits of geological horizons may be identified by the use of vertical variograms on the mineral of economic interest. This information may supplement or guide the correct subdivision of the individual horizons into meaning full data sets by diligent geological observation. This process then improves the quality of the variance modelling of the gold distribution in the plane of the individual layers and therefore enables better estimates to be made into the grids or blocks of the mine model. The technique is explained by an account of the development work, which was performed, on duplicate superimposed reef horizons in the Kimberley formations. The paper then shows how the correct approach was developed to evaluate the mineralized layers in a multiple stacked conglomerate layer sequence in the Elsburg reefs of the Witwatersrand Rand System at the Target deposit. The method of categorization of resources according to confidence in the estimate is also explained. The feasibility processes carried out on the three-dimensional model, in accordance with the SAMREC code are also described. An example of the development of a reconciliation process utilizing chip sampling is also explained.

Ni, Co, Cu and Pt, mattes are common materials that require granulating and milling of the resultant granules for further processing. This route is acceptable if the material is brittle (friable) which is a property associated with the higher sulphur mattes. For lower sulphur levels, where the matte is less amenable to milling, the costs of the milling increases. This paper will compare water granulation with certain dry granulation processes and the downstream processes required for Hydrometallurgy. It will further introduce and expand on atomisation which offers a further safety benefit in the control of the metal flow into the 'wet zone' with the use of a tundish flow control also reducing the conversion from the matte to powder in one fairly straightforward operation.

GOOD ventilation is recognized as an essential for the preservation of health, and laws have accordingly been framed in many countries for the provision of adequate ventilation in factories and places of public resort as well as in mines.Apart from the legislative enforcement of hygienic measures as a matter of public 'policy, the ventilation of mines has an important economic aspect, since it affects to a large extent the industrial efficiency of the workmen, and consequently the cost of mineral production. Until recent years the ventilation of metal mines has not generally received much consideration, and the importance of pure air has been sometimes overlooked. To the absence of explosive gases in such mines, and to the cost of the installation and working of mechanical ventilators, may generally be attributed disregard of adequate ventilation. Multilevel-multiseam hardcoal mines on the European continent usually consist of a huge network of underground openings, sometimes more than 200 km long in total, with some longwalls operating down to a depth of 1,500 m. While operating several longwalls simultaneously, these mines are making use of a number of stationary and mobile measurement- and analysis units in their main ventilation passes combined with atmospheric measurements on the surface. This paper provides an overview over the systems and technology used and describes the typical set-up of a measuring net. To detect and monitor underground fires through fire gases measurement and -analysis, a mobile underground testing laboratory collects data locally in the area of the fire. These laboratories have proven to be extremely useful not only during the actual fire fighting but also for the long-term gas measurements in critical mine areas. They have repeatedly detected starting fires and have thus given the mine the opportunity to react early and to avoid larger damage. Therefore several mobile laboratory units have now been installed for long-term testing in a number of German mines and similar units are being used in the Czech Republic and Poland.

On Feb. 11, 2005, more than 20 mining professionals gathered in Elko, NV for a day-long round-table discussion on heap leaching. Attendees included project managers, operators and environmental professionals. They represented 10 mining organizations. Knight Piésold sponsored the special event. Its seven representatives included three staff members from the company’s Elko Operation, and one each from its Denver, Cajamarca (Peru) and Vancouver offices. The roundtable format was chosen to allow people from the mining industry to share ideas and experiences in an open forum. Rather than presenting prepared talks, spontaneity was encouraged. This resulted in a lively and enjoyable discussion.

It has often been said by consulting engineers that foundation contractors are in the business of taking risks. One would agree that the mere fact a foundation project can be budgeted, planned, engineered and executed solely on the reliability of eight test borings made at a proposed site having an area of approximately 19,000 square feet, is a risky proposition, in and of itself. Now imagine that this site is actually one half of a city block located in an urban setting in an old, congested, historical neighborhood, surrounded by narrow city streets and historic landmark buildings. And suppose that the required depth of excavation for the construction of the new building on this site is approximately 35 feet and the natural groundwater table is at a depth below existing grade of only 25 feet. Given the difficult site conditions outlined above, one could certainly add the words "challenging" and "complicated" to the inherent word "risky" when describing the construction techniques involved to undertake a foundation project of this magnitude. This case study will discuss in detail how the excavation, sheeting, dewatering and underpinning work was accomplished as well as the problems overcome along the way.

Tellurium is a high-tech and also toxic element. This element shows sufficient contents in Fe-Mn crusts and nodules in the modern ocean to be involved in future industrial processes [Hein et al., 2003]. Tellurium minerals and contents are not well recorded in modern and ancient black smoker systems. Tellurides are rarely found in sulfides from the modern oceans [Iizasa et al. 1992; Maslennikov et al., 2010]. The previous common opinion that tellurium is scarce in active seafloor hydrothermal systems can be revised due to the recent discovery of abundant tellurides in chimneys from Brothers Volcano vent site [Berkenbosch et al., 2012]. We found abundant tellurobismuthite, hessite, and native tellurium in chimneys from Su Su Knoll vents sites (West Pacific). So, tellurides can be found in some chimneys but absent in others. The causes of this are poorly understood. These conflicting data create numerous questions and require an explanation. The problem can be resolved by research at different scales including analysis of relevant genetic features of host sequences, systematic textural and paragenetic studies of different types of chimneys, and their rare mineral assemblages. Paragenetic models, compositional analyses and ranges of tellurium-bearing minerals and the physicochemical interpretation of chimney diversity in different types of VMS deposits are the main subjects of our research. The data on tellurides in chimneys from ancient VMS deposits should also be useful to resolve this problem.

Many factors influence the results of hydraulic fracturing to stimulate well productivity. Most of these factors have been studied and their effects discussed in the literature. However, the movement of sand through the crack during fracturing has received little consideration. Exactly where the sand goes in the fracture, how it gets there, and how this might influence results have not been studied, judging from published reports. To get an answer to some of these questions we have studied sand movement through a simulated crack segment in the laboratory. Although the work is preliminary, we have answered some questions about sand movement in a semiquantitative sense. We are reporting our results at this time in the hope of stimulating interest and further study in this important aspect of fracturing. LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of equipment used in this study. A segment of a vertical crack 0.25-in. wide was formed between two Plexiglas plates, and movement of sand in fluid through the crack was observed under various conditions. Sand and fluid were injected into the crack at constant rates. The top and bottom of the crack were closed so that the fluid flowed horizontally. Because of gravity most of the sand settled to the bottom before moving very far through the crack. If the fluid velocity exceeded a certain critical value, then all the sand injected was washed on through the crack even though it had settled to the bottom. When the fluid velocity was less than this value when sand injection was started, most of the sand which settled in the crack remained in place until enough of the area open to fluid flow was blocked by the settled sand to increase the fluid velocity to the critical value.. At this point all injected sand moved on through the crack even though it settled to the lower portion of the moving fluid section. All sand previously settled remained in place. When fluid velocity was increased at this paint by increasing fluid injection rate (without also increasing sand injection rate), some of the previously settled sand was washed out until enough area was open to flow that the velocity dropped to the critical value. Conversely, when the fluid velocity was decreased by decreasing the fluid injection rate (without changing the rate of sand injection), additional sand would settle until the critical velocity was again attained. In short, the critical velocity is an equilibrium value which the system will automatically seek, if possible. The equilibrium (or critical) velocity was measured under several conditions. The results of these measurements are shown in Pig. 2 where the equilibrium velocity is shown as a function of the amount of sand injected per minute. The points falling in the shaded band shown in Fig. 2 were obtained with water. The higher viscosities were obtained by adding CMC (carboxymethylcellu-lose). Data indicate that the equilibrium velocity is not very sensitive to sand size or transport fluid viscosity, or to sand injection rate (except at very low rates). Points connected by the solid CUrve in Fig. 2 were obtained with water and 20- to 40-mesh steel shot. The equilibrium velocity is apparently fairly sensitive to difference in density between particle and fluid. Only one run was made with a gelled fluid and that was gelled water at zero sand injection rate as shown in Fig. 2. "This paper summarizes the work carried out to develop and implement the gold cyanidation by size class (CSC) process, a novel concept aiming to reduce cyanide consumption.First, the authors will present the methodology and results of laboratory tests conducted to evaluate the response and the expected gains for the selected ore when submitted to the CSC processing. In the second part, focus will be on the methodology behind the CSC scheme development prior to its implementation at Sleeping Giant Mine concentrator. Finally, the evaluation of the modified circuit performance (operating since July 2007) will be addressed as a reduction of cyanide consumption by more than 30% and of free NaCN in the tailings by more than 50% is confirmed.INTRODUCTIONCyanidation is the most widely used technique to extract gold from hard rock ore. Its use of oxygen as an oxidant still makes it the cheapest process available after more than a hundred years. Unfortunately, gold cyanidation is known to be a slow process that requires high consumption of cyanide. In fact, cyanidation plants are designed with very long residence times (Habashi, F., 1967). Drawbacks of long cyanidation times are, among others, loss of gold in tailings, high reagent consumption and high capital investment and maintenance costs.Responding to their members expectations for the improvement of cyanidation process, COREM undertook a challenging R&D program covering the development of alternative concepts (processes) and the understanding and solving of mass transfer, gold passivation and process water chemistry problems. One of the interesting findings of the R&D program is a patent pending process technology based on the cyanidation by size class (CSC) concept (Côté and Ourriban, 2004; Gagnon and Ourriban, 2007; Gagnon and Ourriban, 2004).The new technology was tested at the Sleeping Giant concentrator, a plant member of COREM. The existing flowsheet was modified in order to implement the CSC process in the full-scale plant. The plant has been operated using the modified CSC based process since August 2007. Laboratory testwork was conducted prior to the industrial application in order to properly design the new process scheme. The modifications included:1) Reclassification of the grinding circuit product through an hydrocyclone2) Leaching of the coarse size fraction3) Addition of the fine fraction to the coarse leaching circuit tails."

"The first recorded discovery of placer gold in Canada was on the Chaudiere River in Quebec's eastern townships in 1832 and the first major production came from placer deposits in British Columbia in 1858 (Verity 1974). Placer deposits were the major source of gold until the late 1890's, although lode deposits were found in Nova Scotia in 1862. In 1896 the Klondike Gold Rush commenced with the discovery of gold by Henderson and Carmack in the Yukon. The peak was reached in 1900 when over one million ounces of gold valued at approximately $22.3 million were recovered. With the exhaustion of the easily accessible deposits, more capital intensive operations were necessary such as those initiated in 1906 by the Yukon Gold Corporation. This giant dredging operation continued to produce until 1966. Today only a few small operations remain.The development of Canadian lode gold mining began in earnest around 1900 when the railroads were opening up the interior and western part of the country. At this time many discoveries occurred, particularly where mineral outcroppings were near surface. Tremendous impetus for exploration and the reopening of former producers followed the elimination of the gold standard by Great Britain around 1931, and more importantly the United States in 1933, with subsequent stabilization of the price of gold at $35 per ounce in 1934. Prior to this the price of gold was basically unchanged since 1717, approximately, $20 per ounce (Verity, 1974; Green, 1973).The depression of the 1930s adversely affected most industries, however for the gold producers it was a very profitable time. Prices of materials and equipment declined and labour was cheap and plentiful. Interest in gold mining was further stimulated in 1936 when a three year tax exemption was declared for all new metal mines. In 1938 a decline in the value of the Canadian dollar relative to the U.S. dollar benefitted the industry. The second world war provided yet again further incentive for gold production and in 1941 Canadian gold production reached a high of approximately 5.4 million ounces. This figure was not surpassed until 1991 when approximately 5.6 million ounces were produced (Natural Resources Canada, 1996 )."

Calcination of samples from the Savage River region of Thsmania containing varying magnesite/dolomite ratios under conditions optimized for the magnesite component, followed by carbonic acid leaching at elevated pressures, leads to leachates of varying composition. For a 3 per cent solids slurry leached at 15.5°C and 700 k Pa carbon dioxide, the leachates have magnesium concentrations in the range 0.71 - 13.2 g/litre. The corresponding magnesium extraction data are 12.5 - 86.4 per cent. The variation in leachate composition would be unacceptable in terms of continuous processing, so that a feed of "constant" composition is essential. Selective mining and physical beneficiation to remove the bulk of the dolomite do not appear to be practical. It is concluded that the most appropriate method of feed preparation is to carry out extensive blending of the magnesite/dolomite ore and the resultant calcine.

The Western Mining Resource Center (WMRC) at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) received a grant from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to perform a study that will help reduce the amount of respirable dust generated from the cutting of coal. The study is based upon laboratory testing and field experience. This information is being used to develop a new cutterhead design in conjunction with Joy Mining Machinery. The new cutterhead design is being evaluated with existing computer models developed at CSM. The new continuous miner cutterhead will be tested at the Twenty Mile Coal Company’s Foidal Creek Mine. Baseline testing with the current cutterhead will also be performed. This paper presents laboratory test results, design methodology, and test results performed to date.

The spatial distribution of copper grades at the Mansa Mina project is highly variable due to the presence of high grade copper/silver/arsenic breccia bodies. Copper grades within the breccia bodies tend to average about 4.5% copper while grades in the surrounding stockwork average about 1.0%. The breccia is known to occur in the vicinity of significant controlling structures, however, the outline and therefore the thickness of the bodies are far from regular. Due to the high grade of these bodies a significant proportion of the value of the project is derived from the breccia tonnages. The irregularity in the outlines/thickness translates into an uncertainty in the breccia tonnage and therefore in the value of the project. Acknowledging the economic importance of the breccia bodies and the risk associated with the breccia tonnage uncertainty, significant additional drilling has been proposed to both understand the spatial distribution of the breccias and reduce project risk. The costs associated with this additional drilling are not inconsequential; thus, a reasonable question is ‘what value is derived from this additional drilling’? To obtain an answer to this important question, a simulation approach is applied. First the deposit is simulated using the existing drilling and the uncertainty in the resource is defined. Next the proposed drilling program is simulated and the simulated data are added to the existing data. Using this expanded data set a second simulation of the deposit is created and once again the uncertainty in the resource is defined. Using this approach, the reduction in the uncertainty in the resource can be determined. To convert this reduction in uncertainty (or reduction in risk) in the stated resource into a dollar value, a method of defining the increase in the project rate of return necessary to account for risk is presented. Using the two different rates of return, the difference in project NPV and hence the value of additional drilling is determined.

Myanmar Ivanhoe Copper Company Ltd. (MICCL) has been operating the Sabetaung- Kyisintaung (S&K) Project producing LME Grade A Copper Cathode using the Heap Leach-SX-EW Process since 1998. The mineralization is mainly Chalcocite and the mine has a life of 20 years at the designed annual production of 25,000 tonnes of cathode copper. Design capacity was achieved within two of months of start-up. The mine is among the world’s lowest cost, Heap Leach-SX-EW operations. Information regarding plant design and operation are presented along with the challenges lying ahead and the latest developments. Daniel Kunz is President and Chief Operating Officer of Ivanhoe Mines, and a director of MICCL. He has more than 20 years’ experience in mining, construction and engineering. Prior to joining Ivanhoe Mines in 1996, Mr. Kunz was Vice President and Controller of Morrison Knudsen Corporation, a major international mining and construction company. He was also President and Chief Executive Officer of MK Gold Company, a public mining company listed on NASDAQ.

Following a short review of selected literature, a back analysis of stress measurements of stress regeneration in a closed mini-longwall is shown. The agreement is good, lending confidence to the parameters used in the proposed numerical model. Foundation yielding was modelled in the absence of total stope closure. A ?Prandtl? wedge was formed, coinciding with the yield point of the pillar/foundation system. Some theoretical work is used as a starting point for the formulation of a new design methodology for strike or dip stabilizing pillar/foundation systems in deep level goldmines. The existing guideline for the stability of foundations (APS< 2.5UCS) is critically examined. Finally, the advantages of the new approach, and the work required to substantiate the proposed new design methodology, are outlined.

With a particular electrode configuration, and a particular combination of electrode voltage and roll speed, a relatively small increase in electrode voltage, or a relatively small decrease in roll speed, resultsin a marked improvement in the separation of zircon from ilmenite. In general, fine minerals can be separated using a higher roll speed, or a lower electrode voltage, than is required to separate coarse minerals. The ionizing electrode should be reasonably close to the point at which mineral is fed on to the roll, and nearer to the roll than the non-ionizing electrode. The optimum conditions for the separation of zircon from ilmenite may not apply for the separation of other non-conductors from other conductors.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the high tension separators used in the Australian beach sand industry are efficient, this efficiency has been gained very largely by a process of trial and error, and not by a systematic study of the effects of changes in the operating variables. The optimum roll speed for a particular electrode position and electrode voltage, and the optimum electrode voltage for a particular roll speed and electrode position, can both be determined quite readily. It is not so simple to determine the optimum electrode position for a particular electrode voltage and roll speed. The reason for this is that the electrode used in high tension separators consists of two parts-an ionizing and a non-ionizing electrode respectively. The angular and radial positions of these electrodes, relative to the feed roll and to each other, affect the behaviour of conductors and non-conductors to varying degrees.

Typically, large volumes of data are collected during geotechnical investigations for mining projects but rarely is this done in a comprehensive manner that enables all aspects of the geotechnical environment to be evaluated. A geotechnical core logging process has been developed to record mechanical and structural properties of the rock mass. The method enables data for a wide range of rock properties and geotechnically significant major structures to be collected including rock strength, joint surface condition, fracture frequency and fracture orientation. The logging method is unique in that sufficient data is collected to enable the independent determination of all the major rock mass classification systems including rock mass rating (RMR), (Bieniawski 1976, 1989; Laubscher, 1990) Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) tunnelling quality index (Q) (Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974) and geological strength index (GSI) (Hoek, Kaiser and Bawden, 1995). The logging system has been specifically developed to allow better and more precise appreciation of rock mass and structural conditions across the project area thereby optimising the use and application of the available geotechnical data and improving confidence in the outcomes of geotechnical investigations. This paper describes the core logging process with case examples showing how the logged data can be used for underground and open pit mine design.
