This report describes the linkage of all mining sectors with all other manufacturing, services, and final demand sectors of the U.S. economy. Besides being a basic data source, it provides a framework for aggregate economic impact analysis with respect to the mining industries. The framework is an open-static input-output model specifying 48 mining industries as classified in the Standard Industrial Classification Manual for all mining activities and 76 nonmining industries which collectively exhaust, all economic activities. The 124-sector model used in this report is an expansion of the preliminary 82-industry aggregation estimates made by the Department of Commerce. In the expanded model, 48 ruining industries are substituted for the original 6. The methodology used to ascertain the industry-by-industry procurement cost estimates and product ion flows necessary to the construction and expansion of the basic 82-sector model included personal interviews, case studies of specific mining activity analysis, and published and unpublished data from the Bureau of Mines and the Census of Mineral Industries, The end products of this study are two tables arranged to show the direct purchases necessary for each industry to support the level of economic activity and the total purchases generated in each industry throughout the economy by each $1 of aggregate economic demand in 1958. The tables may he used for economic impact studies and market analysis by firms engaged in or closely associated with the mining industries. Some illustrations of their usages are presented.

The cyclone, or centrifugal separator, ,is firmly established in industry as a low cost separator of solids from gases.While it will also separate fluids of different densities, and solids from liquids, its main use is to remove relatively fine dusts from gases whose pr~erties are generally not greatly different from those of air. This latter phase of operation is the one that will be dealt with here.The duty of such a cyclone separating system is to take in a supply of dusty gas and separate it into its components of dust and clean gas as perfectly as possible for the least consumption of pressure head. Any separation at all causes pressure loss and, in general, the greater the separation, the greater the pressure drop needed to effect it. The percentage of dust in suspension which is separated from the gas-dust mixture is commonly called the collection or separation efficiency. Overall or "true" efficiency must take pressure drop into account and may be considered as proportional to the ratio of the percentage of dust collected to the resultant pressure drop. For any cyclone It will vary with different dusts.Many commercial adaptions of the simple cyclone are made solely on the basis of pressure drop improvement, without taking into account the effect on separation efficiency, probably because the latter is so difficult to assess correctly. It appears unfortunate but true that the majority of such adaptions and patent gadgets fitted to cyclones which decrease pressure drop, do have an adverse effect on separation. In other' words, the true efficiency is seldom increased but often diminished.Without a knowledge of what actually goes on inside a cyclone, it is impossible fully to appreciate the real effect of a modification. In the Pilbara region of Western Australia, an iron ore mine is undertaking a high wall cut-back to improve stability and allow access to deeper ore deposits. Several sections of the wall have been classified geologically sensitive due to unstable localised geology, and therefore an engineered approach to vibration critical blasting was required. The use of electronic detonators allowed multiple signature (seed) holes to be incorporated into a production blast adjacent to the geologically sensitive area, therefore providing baseline vibration data to be used for future modelling with the added advantage of eliminating unnecessary pit closure downtime typically associated with a signature hole program. All subsequent blast patterns also incorporated multiple signature holes to provide additional data and allow continual updating – and therefore improved accuracy - of the blast prediction model.

The conventional wave equation analysis without control of the representativeness of the parameters to the actual conditions does not provide accurate results. However, the representatives can be vastly improved by means of using the results of monitoring the dynamic response in a pile during driving. Dynamic monitoring displays the interaction of independent strain and acceleration measurements having directly propor­tional response to impacts, but inversely proportional response to re­flections from the soil. Examples are given and the CAPWAP method used to calculate from the measurements the dynamic pile and soil para­meters and mobilized soil resistance is outlined. The dynamic monitoring technique and analysis has been accepted internationally and been incor­porated into Building Codes. The prediction is offered that in five year's time, no major piling project will be undertaken without dynamic monitoring and analysis.

TURBO blowers for blast-furnace blowing have now been in use for some years, and a review of the experience gained and the present state of progress may be interesting. The first blast-furnace blowing engine of this type to be installed in America was built by the General Electric Co. and is installed at the oxford Furnace of the Empire Iron & Steel Co. This machine was put into operation March 8, 191.0. A duplicate unit is situated at the furnace of the Northern Iron Co. at Port Henry, N. Y., which unit was put into opera ion June 30, 1910 (Fig. 1).

This paper describes a model that can simulate the behaviour of a pneumatic intensifier that is generally referred to as an ?air pump? (AP). The AP is used in many South African underground mines, and utilizes compressed air with pressures between 0.3?0.6 MPa to pump water up to pressures of 12?18 MPa. The high pressure water is used in numerous underground mines to pressurize props and roof bolts that act as safety and roof support devices. The simulation model reproduces the intensifier's operation under various conditions and therefore can be used to investigate the AP's sensitivity towards environmental conditions, design parameters (such as spring stiffness, plunger diameter, nozzle diameter etc.) and operating conditions. Model validation by comparison with laboratory experiments showed good correlation. The model can subsequently be used to investigate design changes aimed at improving the AP's performance and reliability over a wider range of operating conditions.

The Misima open pit gold mine is a 20Mt per annum operation. Blasthole drilling is used to sample all material at a uniform 5m square pattern, and representative sub- sampling of the blast holes enables assay samples to be collected over the full 10m bench height. Samples are assayed for gold, silver and copper at the Company's laboratory at the mine site and the assays are provided to geologists as a written assay report and on floppy disc. Surveyed blasthole locations and assay results are transferred via personal computers (PCs) to a SUN mini-computer where results are stored by bench, blasthole assays are kriged, and plot files are created. A geologist selects grade boundaries from the kriged data, adjusting the boundaries towards the raw blasthole data where hard boundaries are recognised. Surveyors peg the resultant boundaries in the pit using a system of colour-coded pegs to display the different material types. A daily plan also shows boundaries and face positions.

"In 1942, commercial mining operations began in what is now the Lucky Friday Ag/Pb/Zn mine in Idaho’s Silver Valley. Wholly owned since 1962 by Hecla Mining Company, the mine has produced more than 145 million ounces of silver and has been a mainstay producer in Idaho’s Silver Valley for over 70 years.However, by the early 21st century, the mill had fallen, technologically, seriously behind the rest of the industry. Accordingly, starting in 2005, the current mill management team set to revitalizing the milling operation. This paper will describe how the mill was systematically evaluated and the aging infrastructure replaced with more current technology. Driven by internal mill review studies supported by QEMSCAN mineralogical balancing, the mill has in recent years been through waves of upgrading – from the installation of new mechanical and column flotation equipment to the introduction of on-stream analysis, a technology well-accepted around most of the industry but alien to this technologically conservative mining district.The experience at Lucky Friday is a testament to the need for ongoing structured mill optimisation and technology upgrading in established mining operations. This paper will describe engineering experiences associated with upgrading equipment in an operating mill, contained in a confined building. Experiences in teaching the team new ways of operating a mill, and finally the metallurgical rewards that have been reaped will be described.INTRODUCTIONMining in Idaho’s Silver ValleyIdaho’s Silver Valley is a 64-km long valley flanked by the US Northern Rocky mountains, seldom more the 3-km wide, and stretching across much of Idaho’s northern panhandle, roughly 150 km south of the Canadian border. Mining has been continuously active in the area for more than 140 years, during which time, the Silver Valley has become one of the richest silver producing districts in the world, and as of 1985 had out-produced the 500 years of production from the famed Potosi district in Bolivia. Since 1885, almost 100 deposits have been discovered and worked in the district (Chapman, 2000)."

Así también, los mandos medios definen los objetivos y estrategias, desplegándola en cascada a la supervisión y estos a su vez, al personal de línea. Este concatenamiento de responsabilidades y la participación de los CMC´s aseguran el alineamiento y control de la gestión.

Montana Tech has embarked on a coordinated series of studies to delineate the characteristics of the Berkeley Pitlake containing over 36 billion gallons of acidic, metal-contaminated water formed after the cessation of open-pit copper mining in Butte, Montana, USA. The objectives of the overall series of studies are to summarize presently available information and to generate new and needed information to formulate a conceptual environmental model for the pitlake and to provide characterization data for the development of advanced treatment technologies. In this presentation, the chemistry of the Berkeley Pitlake water is partially reviewed. It is known that the pitlake consists of two distinct layers of water referred to as surface and deep water. Samples of deep water were collected and placed in a 12-ft high and 6-inch diameter column and exposed to different wavelengths of UV radiation as well as atmospheric conditions. Measurements of pH, redox potential (EH), dissolved O2, turbidity, conductivity, temperature, and elemental composition show that the water reacts differently and indicates that the diurnal effects of sunlight likely play a major non-biological role in its chemistry. Resulting technology could be useful for developing an alternative to treating acid-rock drainage.

"In 1998, the Iron Ore Company of Canada initiated an aggressive program to improve the performance of its Carol Lake Concentrator located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This program was termed the Concentrator Upgrade Program. The Concentrator Upgrade Program was a group of initiatives developed with the common goal of improving the overall process and operations of the IOCC Carol Lake Concentrator. The main goal of the program was to increase the annual production capacity of the concentrator from 18.0 million tomes to 21.6 million tomes. This gain in capacity was to be done mainly through improvements in process iron recovery. The target iron recovery value was 80+% versus a historical value of 70%. This improvement in iron recovery would translate to a natural weight recovery improvement from 44% to 50%.The Concentrator Upgrade Program provided the first opportunity in 30 years to make fimdamental changes to the concentrator flowsheet. To accomplish this, several pilot plants were built to evaluate new circuits. AAer 2 years, a new flowsheet was selected for the primary gravity separation circuit and the magnetite circuit. The centrepiece of the new flowsheet was the introduction of Hindered Settling Separators to the metallurgical process.The Concentrator Upgrade Program has since proceeded into detailed engineering and, as of February 2001, construction. The first one of IOCC’s 3 primary AG Mills (Mill 11) has been converted to the new flowsheet at the time of writing and is in the throes of commissioning. This paper will review the flowsheet development program in the pilot plant for the gravity separation circuit and examine the overall benefits to the operation of the IOCC Carol Lake Concentrator."

"The Navy initiated liquid propellant research in the early 1940's. The first promising Navy liquid propellant, Otto Fuel II, was developd in the early 1950 as a potential torpedo fuel. Later, the Navy developed a HAN based liquid propellant designated NOS-365, a hydroxylammonium nitrate, isopropylammonium nitrate and water formulation. A large gas volume generated by this propellant produced a large wake behind the torpedo. As one can readily understand, this negated the useof the propellant for this application. Recognizing the large gas volume as a desirable propulsion system for guns, the Navy embarked upon a gun propellant proqam. Utilizing a bulk loaded gun sysytem, the program failed when the gun was destroyed by the propellant detonating."

Olympic Dam is a world-class deposit and is unquestionably one of the most geologically, structurally and texturally complex orebodies in the world. As development advances into the Southern Mine Area (SMA) the geological understanding is rapidly evolving as underground drill rigs are prioritised to provide the additional data necessary to convert Indicated and Inferred Resources into Measured Resources. The SMA represents approximately 70 per cent of Olympic Dam’s total resource and is significantly more complex when compared to the Northern Mine Area with respect to the diverse nature and origin of lithotypes, rock mass characteristics and the extent of major structures controlling primary mineralisation trends.Recent mine development into the central SMA has been impacted by a major structural gouge zone. Sound geological interpretation allowed mine geologists to successfully integrate their local understanding of the distribution of lithotypes with critical geotechnical data, chiefly rock quality designation (RQD), to delineate and better predict this major structural gouge zone. As a direct result, development rates improved whilst also increasing awareness for the importance of sound geological interpretation utilising all available data. In order to maximise predictability across all systems in place through the mining geology value chain, the integration of geological and geotechnical data in a geotechnical RQD block model provides an additional tool to assist in preventative solutions for complex problems to achieve a proactive mining environment.This paper details the methods used to build the RQD block model, the geostatistical estimation parameters, 3D geotechnical domain wireframes, challenges regarding legacy approaches, and collection of geotechnical information and incorporating/linking geotechnical data with geological features, including the use of grade and lithotype domains. Although the geotechnical block model proved difficult and complex to construct, the resultant product has seen successful integration of geological and geotechnical data into mine planning providing higher resolution of critical parameters for local mining areas.CITATION:Clark, J M, Passmore, M and Poznik, N, 2017. "Blast vibrations are essentially a strain/stress wave propagating in rock or structures inthe vicinity of a blast. However, blast vibration has always been quantified in terms ofpeak particle velocity (PPV) or acceleration (PPA), and a meaningful relationshipbetween blast vibration and strain/stress has not been established. The determination ofthe dynamic strain from blast vibration may improve quantification of blast damage andselection of a blast vibration limit for critical structures or high walls. Dynamic strainrelates to rock mechanics or material strength more directly than peak particle velocity(PPV). This paper documents a method to calculate the three-dimensional dynamic straintensor from recorded blast vibration signals. The method is based on determination of thedisplacement gradient at a point of interest for each time instance during the vibrationduration. The method to calculate dynamic strain is applicable to generic seismicwaveforms including near and far field blast vibration from a production blast withmultiple blast holes. In order to minimize measurement errors the specifications of thespacing between monitors and the sampling frequency of the vibration recording aredescribed."

The occurrence of molybdenite in a small shaft in the western margin of the Wuuluman Granite in central western New South Wales is noted. Full petrographic and mineragraphic descriptions are given of a mineralized contact zone between the granite and a basic hornfels.Mineralogical data .indicate a similarity between this mineral occurrence and other occurrences in larger mines remote from the granite.

It is a quite challenging objective to aim at covering in one paper the most recent evolution in piling and deep foundations technologies. This report has to be understood within the limits of the session 2b. It will therefore concentrate on the technological evolution of deep foundation techniques, addressing design issues only when directly related to execution aspects. For the same reason, it will not address the related codes, as a separate session of this conference is specifically dedicated to this topic. Monitoring and deep excavations being covered in other sessions, they will only be addressed when clearly relevant. We will try to show, from a practical viewpoint what are the main changes and the most exciting or critical issues over the last years, as they appear from the topics addressed in the literature or in the papers published in this session of the conference. As the paper mostly intends to explain trends and critical topics, it cannot be exhaustive, neither can it give the full description of the case studies. The author invites the reader to read the full papers, for a more complete description. We have divided our report in three main topics: Piling, soil improvement and treatment and retaining walls. Anchors and tie-backs will not be treated, neither tunneling.

Except for uranium search, conventional oil well logging techniques are relatively little-used in mining exploration. The main reasons for this are cost and an apparent lack of awareness of the potential use of the methods in the search for ore. However, relatively inexpensive portable units are currently available for performing the simpler electrical and radiometric logs in diamond drill holes.The emphasis in oil exploration logging programmes is largely on the estimation of porosity. In most mineral work, however, porosity is not very significant, and factors such as mineral conductivity and radioactivity assume an important role.The Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) during a programme to explore for uranium and associated base metals in the area east of Rum Jungle, N.T., carried out electrical and radiometric logging of diamond drill holes as a routine part of their investigations. Case histories are described in which the logs were used to aid in defining stratigraphic sequences and transgressive structures in base-metal prospects. Some surface geophysicalanomalies were explained by the logging: induced polarization and electromagnetic anomalies were related to black slate; and self-potential anomalies were related to oxidation of pyrite black slate, or apparent electrokineticeffects in the black slate. The logs provided an objective appraisal of the rock units penetrated and thereby helped to differentiate lithologies.Borehole logging, including newer techniques such as downhole analysis, could be done in geological and geophysical investigations in other areas for a relatively small cost with a considerable potential gain of information.

"Ore mineralogy and texture are primary variables controlling mill recovery efficiency in flotation plants. However, tracking daily variations of key mineralogical characteristics such as species-by-species liberation is not possible with current on stream analysers and assay lab techniques. In addition, traditional plant mineralogical analysis limited by long data turn-around times from central analysis laboratories typically provides only a time-averaged view of mill performance, e.g. by means of monthly composite feed, con or tailings analysis.This paper presents the results of a development and first field test of an on-site Automated Mineralogy solution (MLA or QEMSCAN) with the specific goal of monitoring recovery variation, ore quality and flotation performance on a mineral species-by-species and day-by-day basis, from up to twelve million direct particle observations per month. The trial was performed at a Pb/Zn-Ag operation in the US from November 2012 to April 2013. The focus of the study was three-fold: to validate the robustness of equipment and operational procedures for daily use by mine site technicians at a remote mine site to develop a methodology to boil down hundred-thousands of Automated Mineralogy particle data from size-by-size con and tailings samples to a couple of numbers meaningful to chief metallurgists to monitor recovery trend changes and correlate these to changes in the feed properties and/or flotation efficiency.The study focused primarily on the Pb/Ag rougher-concentrator circuit. Ten polished blocks of two and three size fractions of con and tailings were prepared by mine site technicians during a daily twelve hour shift. Eight hours of daily measurement time by the instrument revealed an estimate of the dayÆs recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance for Freibergite (Ag-species) and Galena (Pb-species), within 36 hours from initial sampling. Data quality was assessed by means of calculated versus measured assay reconciliation. Cumulative sum curves of recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance reveal trend changes with a frequency of 1 to 4 weeks. These were correlated to cumulative sum curves of e.g. locked and slimed particle classes of the mineral species of interest, attempting to identify a possible root cause of recovery performance trend changes. Systematic over-grinding and flotation chemistry issues were the primary causes of below average plant operations during the trial.CITATION:van der Wal, D, Dobbe, R and Moeller, K, 2013. The title of my talk is "The Gold Miner and the Future of Gold." This title might just as accurately have been stated as "Gold and the Future of the Gold Miner." Since prehistoric times gold has been sought by mankind for its beauty and its unusual physical and chemical properties. Early in the dawn of civilization it became the ultimate unit of value and lubricated trade between peoples. For at least 6000 years, gold has been used to barter for other commodities. It has been prospected for, treasured, made into works of art and personal adornment, and from time to time has been the object of conquest. Because of its predominant role in recent centuries as a basis for money, economists began to think of it solely in these terms. Annoyed by the disciplinary pressure of gold on the money manager's desire to manipulate money, the famous economist, John Maynard Keynes, characterized it as a "barbaric relic of the past", a characterization repeated by William McChesney Martin, Jr., when he was head of the Federal Reserve Bank. Gold, however, has physical and chemical properties that make it one of the most useful metals in the modern world.' It is the most ductile metal known. An ounce of gold, for example, can be drawn into a continuous wire over 35 miles long. It also is so malleable that an ounce of gold can be beaten into films ten one-millionths of an inch thick sufficient to cover 68 sq ft of surface. It has a density of 19.3 and is so heavy that 1 cu ft of gold weighs more than half a ton. Gold is nonmagnetic and has a high electric conductivity, only slightly less than silver and copper. Gold is so inert to all the chemicals found in nature that gold coins and jewelry buried beneath the soil or at the bottom of the sea for thousands of years appear to be as bright and perfect as when they were first immersed. Finally, gold has an extremely high reflectivity both to light and infrared rays. Because of these qualities, in addition to its rare beauty, industrial and artistic uses of gold have been growing rapidly. On a world basis, a recent study estimated that in 1960 about 750 tons of gold were used for fabrication, and that the amount had grown to about 1296 tons in 1968. My objective in this talk is to discuss with you the present and future supply of and demand for gold on a worldwide basis and the effect these forces are likely to have on the price the miner can expect to receive for the gold he produces. A hydrogeologic characterization and impact analysis was performed for a proposed quarry at the Hitch Rack Ranch located in the Little Turkey Creek watershed southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Continuous multiple channel tubing, nested piezometers, stream flow measurements, and mapping of known seeps were used to define the three-dimensional potentiometric distribution and areas of groundwater recharge and discharge. Water balance considerations, mass balance calculations, and potentiometric response to earth tides and barometric fluctuations confirmed that the granite fracture system in the ridge area of the proposed quarry has an extremely low bulk hydraulic conductivity resulting in minimal groundwater discharge to sustain the baseflow of Little Turkey Creek. The Little Turkey Creek valley forms the major conduit for groundwater flow exiting from the upper part of watershed underlain by granite. This conclusion has significant implications with respect to mine planning to minimize projected impacts to the hydrologic system and preserve this recharge component to downgradient Denver Basin sedimentary deposits.
