The paper reports on a vacation work project conducted at Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft, Anglo Platinum, where there was a need to optimize the transport of personnel to level 15 and below. Approximately 900 men per hour need to travel between the shaft and the start of the current chairlift system. Time studies were used as the major indicator of the extent of the current problem, and it is recommended that a new chairlift system be installed to cover the distance from the vertical shaft station at level 15 to the chairlift decline station on level 15. A capital cost of approximately R10 million is necessary to carry out the proposed recommendation. Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft has the capacity to wind 1070 people per hour, and the current labour complement going to the level 15 shaft station stands at 1570 employees; thus at optimum efficiency the proposed chairlift system could transport the entire shift to the start of the current chairlift system in only 1 hour and 45 minutes. Reducing the distance walked at the start of the shift may also have an impact on productivity.

The Republic of Singapore’s Public Utilities Board is implementing the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System Project. The project’s deep tunnel component, 48 km of deep, large diameter sewer tunnels has been successfully completed (the works are in the defects liability period). Six International Design/Build tunnel contracts utilized eight Earth Pressure Balance TBMs ranging up to 7.23 m in diameter to deal with varied ground types ranging from deep soft clays to fresh granite. Numerous access/workshafts were constructed and using various support systems. This paper provides an assessment/overview of the tunnel contracts, tunnel excavation methods and equipment, and the shaft systems. Suggested enhancements to similar future projects are provided.

For many years line-of-sight (LOS) issues for underground mobile equipment is a growing focus of research. This research is a result of the numerous fatalities and injuries which occur in the mining industry and which are related to poor operator LOS. Three assessment methods are currently used to assess operator LOS of underground mobile equipment. The light filament (LF) method is a hands-on assessment method that is performed in the field. This method is not evaluated in this paper. The laser scan (LS) method of assessing equipment is a quick and reliable method that comes from the need to evaluate vehicles already located in the field. The computer simulation (CS) method can assess LOS issues using a computer aided drawing (CAD) model, which is useful for assessing current or prototype models. The purpose of the current research is to compare and validate different operator LOS assessment methods. Comparison of the results of the LS and CS visibility plots yielded similar quantifiable results. A visual comparison of the results further illustrate that the LS and CS methods are acceptable assessment tools for mobile equipment operator LOS evaluation. The visibility assessment methods are now being prepared as guidelines for the mining industry to assess current and potential designs.

Energy efficiency is currently a significant area of interest due to the Eskom power situation, which led to severe power impacts to the PGM, and indeed whole SA primary industries, in early 2008. Anglo Platinum has focused on energy efficiency for a number of years, especially in the concentrator operational area. New comminution technologies have been aggressively developed, which have shown real metallurgical efficiency gains as well as significant energy efficiency and saving potential for Anglo Platinum?s total electrical consumption as the company expands into a growing PGM demand market. This paper illustrates this programme?s activities, potential and considerable achievements to date.

Different variations of soil nailing techniques have been used in the United States since the late 1970's. Such techniques owe their origins to French developments, which began in the early 1970's as a spin-off from European tunneling excavation support practice. The growing demands of urban infrastructure development and rehabilitation and environmental protection have created an active and expanding soil nailing market demand for earth retention and slope stabilization in the United States since its early developmental years. There is a clear need for a fundamental review of the large number of soil nailing techniques that are currently being used in the United States. Following a brief summary tracing the historical development of soil nailing and a generic classification of applications, this paper provides a review of the different recent advances in the design and construction of soil nailed systems. Discussion topics include nail design advances, permanent "top-down", structure support/underpinning, alternative face stability measures, composite systems, hollow bar and fiberglass nails and architectural reinforced concrete/shotcrete facings. Case histories will be presented to illustrate each of these advances.

"Samples with contrasting gold mineralization were studied quantitatively prior to metallurgical tests. The AD samples are coarser-grained and characterized by abundant Sb minerals (jamesonite, berthierite, stibnite). The finer-grained MW sample has abundant pyrite and pyrrhotite, with arsenopyrite and galena next in abundance. A large number of gold mineral particles were determined by SEM investigation of hydroseparation concentrates, ranging from 150 to 597 per sample. The grain-size distribution of the gold minerals shows evidence of bimodal grain-size distributions (volume %), with the coarse fraction being most significant in sample MW-1 (maximum ECD=308µm). The coarsest gold minerals in the AD samples range from 139µm to 281µm ECD.The deportment of gold minerals is as electrum, aurostibite, native gold, and a possible new mineral (AuNiSb4). Gold also occurs in nisbite. The gold minerals are dominated by electrum in three samples and aurostibite is next in abundance. The major gold minerals are probably representative of three stages of gold mineralization. The first stage is represented by electrum, which is partly to completely replaced by Sb-rich mineralization forming aurostibite, and the last stage is native gold, often occurring as rims on one or the other earlier gold mineral. The gold minerals are strongly associated with sulphides in the AD samples (55 to 60 vol.%). At the grind used for the hydroseparation the liberated gold mineral quantity (volume %) is also significant, ranging from 65% for sample MW-1 to 30 to 37% for the AD samples.INTRODUCTIONThe Clarence Stream deposit is located 70 km south-southwest of Fredericton and 25 km northnorthwest of St. George, south-western New Brunswick, near the international boundary with Maine (Fig. 1)."

"The High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) is a relatively new comminution technology that has been shown to be more energy efficient compared to semi-autogeneous (SAG) mills. Full and fair consideration cannot be given to HPGR-based comminution circuits in early stage projects, because presently pilot scale testing is required for assessing and sizing; pilot scale testing requires bulk samples weighing more than one tonne. A CAMIRO research program was conducted at the University of British Columbia to develop bench scale tests that would reduce the quantity of sample required to assess HPGR.Three test procedures were developed.1. The Direct Calibration Methodology calibrates piston press test results to pilot scale test results such that piston press tests can then be used to determine the energy–size reduction relationship for a range of ore types.2. The Database Calibrated Methodology, which is similar to the Direct Calibration Methodology except that it calibrates piston press tests against a database of pilot scale and piston press tests.3. The Semi-Mechanistic Methodology was developed to use piston press test results as an input for an HPGR based energy-size reduction performance model.Through utilization of these methodologies, the energy–size reduction performance of an HPGR can be predicted with minimal sample requirement. In addition, piston press testing is far more cost effective, faster, and accessible than pilot-scale HPGR testing.IntroductionOne could argue that in the future, decisions regarding selection of comminution circuits will be made primarily on the basis of energy consumption. In this paper, the effects of some organic compounds on the current efficiency, cell voltage and specific energy consumption during nickel electrowinning, and on the deposit features (morphology, crystallographic orientation and nanohardness) were described. The organics tested here (extractant, diluent, flocculant, lubricating oil and acid mist suppressant) are currently used in industrial plants. The results indicated that only the flocculant and acid mist suppressant exhibit relevant negative impacts on the current efficiency and energy consumption. The current efficiency dropped from 93.6 % (organic-free solutions) to 86.0 % and to 92.8% in electrolytes containing 100 mg.L-1 of acid mist suppressant and flocculant, respectively. At this concentration, their addition to the electrolyte led to increases of the specific energy consumption in the order of 18 % (acid mist supressant) and 2 % (flocculant). Cyclic voltammetry showed that Ni nucleation occurs at more negative potentials at 50 and 100 mg.L-1 of these organics in the electrolyte, thus indicating an inhibition of the deposition process. The deposit quality decreased at the higher concentration of all organics, when more hydrogen pitting was observed. The acid mist suppressant caused delamination of the Ni deposit at 50 and 100 mg.L-1. The addition of 100 mg.L-1 of flocculant and acid mist suppressant to the electrolyte increased the nanohardness of the deposit around 31 and 72%, respectively. The increase in Ni deposit hardness may lead to a decrease in the material ductility, thereby affecting the stripping and cutting of Ni sheets. Our findings may be helpful since strong adverse effect of some organics that may be present in the electrolyte were identified, thus the industry can control and optimize the organic´s dosage in the corresponding operations.

Undrained shear strengths obtained by various testing methods are correlated with case record and experimental data. Some problems posed by the construction of tall buildings are briefly discussed. Comments on applications are made to help engineers deal with practical problems.

The commonly traded base metals concentrates of copper, lead, tin and zinc are sold by miners to custom smelters using contracts whose terms were generally established at the beginning of the 20th century or even earlier. Technical clauses in these concentrates for items such as payable metals and penalty elements do not reflect current realities of extractive metallurgical technologies and hygiene/environmental issues.It is an axiom that the miners and smelters have a symbiotic relationship. While the existing antique and arcane commercial arrangements serve the purpose of transferring money from the buyer to the seller, they are not likely to result in the industry achieving better overall technical and economic outcomes. By examining the cases for copper concentrates and zinc concentrates in particular, it will be shown that the practical application of these antiquated technical clauses does not drive the miners to produce the better quality concentrates that should be desired by the smelters. This is despite development of mineral beneficiation and hydrometallurgical technologies that would allow the miners to make better products.The adage that any extractive metallurgical problem in the smelter is cheaper to solve in the concentrator still generally holds.While nickel concentrates are only touched on lightly in this discussion because sales terms are more opaque than those for the other base metals, it is expected that the same conclusions will apply.CITATION:Munro, P D and Munro, S E, 2015. "Abstract The plugging effect of open-ended piles in sandy soil is analyzed by full-scale field test and plugging measurement. PLR (plug length ratio) measurement data from 144 field cases are analyzed with pile diameter. Based on the plugging measurements, PLR of open-ended piles which have above 1000mm diameter is predicted to be above 0.9. Through plugging measurements, a new empirical method is suggested for quantifying the plugging effect of open-ended piles. The proposed PLR equation is possible to predict the behavior of soil plug in the preliminary design stage. In addition, in order to investigate the behavior of the soil plug of open-ended pile, field load tests are performed on instrumented three piles driven into sand. It is obtained that the resistance components of open-ended pile are separated by double-walled pile system. It is found that inner shaft capacity is developed nearby pile tip. However, upper soil plug did not influence the inner shaft capacity. Also, it is found that all test piles are floating piles and unplugged condition because the sum of inner shaft capacity and outer shaft capacity is calculated about 58 to 76% of the ultimate bearing capacity.INTRODUCTIONIn Korea, a number of huge construction projects such as harbor terminals, offshore grand bridges, and lifeline systems are progress in urban and costal area. In these areas, steel pipe piles are frequently used to support high-rise buildings and heavy weight structures for ensuring structural safety rather than serviceability limit capacity. Also, steel pipe piles are frequently used in civil engineering structures because they have many advantages such as high-load bearing capacity, light weight and outstanding workability. The mega foundations of grand bridges and high-rise buildings are required in geotechnical engineering. Large diameter driven piles are frequently used in several projects.Many specifications such as API, FHWA and AASHTO have been reported as a design guideline of plugging effect, however , the current design method for plugging effect of steel pipe piles are mainly based on the our knowledge derived from observation of the model test or the small diameter pile load test. Therefore, these specifications have limitation to apply the large diameter steel pipe piles.Much work has been done to study the plugging effect by many researchers. Yamahara (1964) reported that soil plug has been modeled as a thin disk element as shown in Figure 1, since the increment of radial strain of the soil plug can be neglected due to high rigidity of the pile compared to that of the soil plug. Klos and Tejchman (1977) reported that the end bearing capacity of open-ended piles was almost equal to that of a closed-ended pile when penetration depth of pile was above 15times the pile diameters by model tests. Paikowsky and Whitman(1990) reported fundamental studies on mechanism of plugging effect in sand. Paik et al. (2003) reported that empirical relations for plug load capacity, annulus load capacity, and shaft load capacity of open-ended piles are proposed based on the model pile tests. As discussed above, much work has been done in the area of plugging effect. But little work has been done to study the plugging effect by full scale field tests."

"The Detour Lake mine is located 200 km northeast of Timmins, Ontario, Canada.The mill processes a free milling gold ore using both a gravity circuit and leaching with a state-of-the-art carbon-in-pulp circuit. The grinding circuit is a conventional SABC circuit with a tonnage of 55,000 tpd at 95 microns with the addition of pre-crushing upstream of the SAG mill.The Detour Lake mine has one of the largest gyratory crusher in the world (60"" x 113"") and over the years, many improvements have been made to this crusher with the result of improving plant throughput. This paper will present how choke feeding the gyratory crusher has been found to be one of the main influences on crusher product particle size and plant throughput. It will explain how the effect of choke feeding the gyratory was measured and from that, the various changes made to improve choke feeding of the gyratory crusher.IntroductionOre is hauled from the open pit mine and dumped directly into a single 60"" x 113"" primary gyratory crusher. The live capacity of both the feed and discharge hoppers of the gyratory crusher are designed for two (2) truck loads each, assuming a nominal payload of 300 tonnes per truck. The surge bin under the primary crusher feeds an apron feeder that controls the ore feed rate at approximately 4,200 tph onto a 227 metres long x 1.52 metres wide belt conveyor with a nominal capacity of 4,200 tph.The primary crusher is operated at an open side setting of 172 millimetres to produce a F80 feed to the secondary crushing circuit of 135 millimetres."

Fosterville gold mine recently celebrated production of its one millionth ounce of gold based firmly within a history of refractory sulfide gold mining. Compared with other Victorian gold mines, the disseminated nature of the sulfide gold is a deposit style with low estimation variance combined with established processes to accurately delineate the controlling structures. The systems in place had been established and have worked effectively for the majority of the one million produced ounces.By the end of 2014, diamond drill campaigns targeting the lower Phoenix orebody at depths of 800 m below surface began showing a change to the nature of the gold within the deposit. Coarse visible gold within 0.5–2 m thick quartz carbonate veins were being intersected with regularity showing the emergence of a different zone of gold mineralisation.Data about the new and exciting discovery couldn’t be gathered fast enough, however, established systems and processes throughout the geology and processing departments were not developed to handle a coarse gold environment. Change would be commensurate with the size and scale of the discovery, and new learnings would need to be implemented quickly to keep in front of a mining schedule that was focused on producing tonnes due to the dropping grades of the sulfide ore.Gold assays being returned were showing that the gold nature was different to those of other Victorian deposits. Comparative to the highly nuggety nature of gold found in other Victorian goldfields, the fine grained gold accumulations were dispersed in relatively consistent narrow linear trends grading consistently into the hundreds of grams per tonne. New drill intersections were being returned by the day and research to find developed orebodies that had published information into how to handle such a rapid change yielded few examples.The challenge was to review and set new standards with regards to handling an orebody that transitioned the very nature of the gold being mined. This involved reviewing all steps in the estimation process including data capture and quality control and quality assurance through to mineral liberation through the mill. Difficulties also involved finding analogous orebodies that consisted of both free milling and refractory ores that were dealing with drill assays that were measured as percentages of gold.CITATION:Phillips, N, 2017. The Hiddenite District of Alexander County, NC has produced some of the world?s finest large emeralds since the first one was discovered 134 years ago. In fact, North America?s largest emeralds come from the district, making this one of the continent?s most unique gem deposits. In addition to emeralds, the Hiddenite District is also famous as the discovery site for the rare spodumene mineral hiddenite, first identified in 1881. Nowhere else in the world do these two minerals naturally occur together. The emeralds are a unique color variety of beryl (Al2Be3Si6O18) with trace amounts of Cr+3 and V+3 substituting for Al+3. The hiddenite (LiAlSi2O6) crystals also exhibit emerald green color due to traces of chromium. Consisting of three large deposits and numerous prospects, the district encompasses an area of 10 km2 (4 sq miles) centered on the small town of Hiddenite. Operations at the Adams, Ellis and North American Emerald Mines properties have been productive at irregular intervals since the 1880s. Currently, only the North American Emerald Mines property is being mined on a regular basis. Recent activity there has exposed a 3-hm2 (7.4-acre) pit with depths of 25 m (82 ft) that provides the best exposures of unweathered bedrock seen in the district in more than 120 years. Although no official records exist, public and private data indicate that the production of the entire Hiddenite District from 1880 to 2007 is about 70,000 carats of emerald and 20,000 carats of hiddenite. The bulk of the emeralds came from the North American Emerald Mine property (NAEM, formerly known as the Rist Mine) where sustained mining replaced the previous sporadic prospecting in 2000.

Small scale gold mining operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG) have been observed to use very low flow rates of water in sluice boxes. In a series of laboratory experiments carried out to determine whether this approach was unsatisfactory or not for their situation, indications were obtained that it had some advantages in the recovery of fine gold but at the cost of considerable throughput. The separation mechanisms operating in such a system are analysed.

The thermal properties of manganese raw materials such as ores, sinters, and briquettes, are among the many factors that determine the amount of energy needed for processing. Thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity, conductivity, and apparent specific heat capacity of solid samples and compacted powder samples of manganese ores were examined from room temperature to 1000 °C. The effect of porosity (of the materials used) on the thermal properties was also investigated. The laser flash method and a pushrod dilatometer were used.

Study of geothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) has significantly advanced our understanding of the processes of epithermal mineralisation. The three main lessons learnt are: 1. knowledge of their chemical anatomy; 2. precious metal transport and deposition; and 3. hydrothermal alteration zoning. These are described in the context of ore formation and exploration.

The economical analyses of different Chuquicamata open pit mine planning scenarios, indicate that the pit closure should occur at latest in the year of 2017. However, about 60,000 m of drill holes have demonstrated that below the pit bottom there is a potential of 2.3 billion tons of ore. Hence, Division Codelco Norte developed the scoping engineering for a large underground panel caving operation, similar to El Teniente mine. This project considers the exploitation of a 2500 m 300 m footprint, with three 250 m lifts. The plan considers to initiate the construction in the year 2009, to begin the production in the year 2015 and achieve a production rate of 45 million tons per year in the year 2021. A large-scale transition from open pit to underground mining like this one presents three main challenges: (1) to include the geotechnical aspects relevant for mine design and mine planning, (2) to define the proper surface and underground infrastructure, and (3) to fulfil the project deadlines and to achieve the production targets. This paper summarizes this transition project and discusses these three main challenges.

Construction of cave mining systems requires significant capital expenditure and long-term commitment of human, equipment and material resources before production commences. Risks and uncertainties of these large-scale mining projects are significantly higher than for small-scale projects. This is due to the complexity and interactions of the construction schedule components and the large scale and uniqueness of such projects. One way to successfully manage construction uncertainties that would lead to schedule delays is to include a reasonable cost contingency in the budget estimation. A real options approach based on the least-squares Monte Carlo (LSM) method is used to estimate cost contingency associated with schedule uncertainty in mass mining projects. Cost contingency is estimated as the cost of potential project crashing (acceleration) decisions, which pays for not extending the schedule. While such a significant undertaking is expected to be subject to some delays, these can have an enormous impact on the economic value of such projects. The value of the crashing option was explicitly formalised into the process of valuation, as it is assumed to be a single option being considered in the valuation at every decision point prior to the construction completion date. As a part of the proposed method, a stochastic function for the percentage of remaining scope of work for the remaining duration of the entire project was integrated into a framework of numerical simulations. This ensured that this function can implicitly account for sources of schedule uncertainties for projects represented by multiple and overlapping work packages. The LSM method was applied to a real case scenario in an operating block cave mine, with modified scale and features. The results yielded by the LSM method indicated that significant changes in capital budget allocation stem from variation in a contractor’s risk perception and confidence level of estimated delays.CITATION:Ahmed, H M and Dunbar, W S, 2016.
