During the search for deposits of soluble potash salts in the United States, carried on by the United States Geological Survey, much infor- mation was collected on the salt resources and industry of the United States. The more important features of the information thus gath- ered, compiled, and digested may be classified under five headings, as follows: 1. Geology of the salt deposits of the United States. 2. Theories relating to the origin and formation of salt deposits. 3. Chemical composition of saline materials in the United States, principally rock salt and natural and artificial brines. 4. Statistics of salt production in the United States. 5. Technology of salt production. The first four items are not discussed in this report, but their treatment will comprise a separate report published by the Geologi- cal Survey, which will supplement this report, relating to salt- making processes, and will describe comprehensively the salt resources of the United States. Persons desiring a copy of that report should apply to the Director of the United States Geological Survey, Wash- ington, D. C. In addition to the discussion of processes, this report gives a brief description of the more important sources of salt in the United States. This description has been abstracted from the much length- ier description contained in the report to be published by the Geo- logical Survey.

The great variability of mineral and energy prices has motivated some governments to incorporate a windfall profits tax into their mineral taxation regimes. Windfall profits taxes are a means for governments to capture additional mineral revenue when mineral prices are considered higher than some historic level. Governments need to be aware of the effects of such contingent taxes on the exploration, development and operating decisions of mining companies. Mining companies need to be able to calculate the full impact of windfall profits taxes on the economics of their projects. This paper examines the valuation of a multi-phase copper-gold project in the presence of a windfall profits tax. Real options Monte Carlo simulation is used to characterise the different exposures of the mine owner and of the government to the risky cash flow streams that they receive from the project. The results highlight that Monte Carlo simulation paired with the real option valuation method is able to account appropriately for the differing risk exposures, while the traditional discounted cash flow valuation model is not. Our key conclusion for governments and mining companies is that the impact of contingent tax and royalty terms can and should be assessed using advanced valuation techniques, and the results used to improve contract designs under the constraint of actual and perceived fiscal system stability.

Resource estimation for the West Leeville deposit is prepared using a conventional explicit approach. The geologic model is developed using interpretive methods based on visual logging. Grade shells are then prepared at low and high grade cutoffs. The low grade shell includes material of interest (Au > 0.010opt), while the high grade shell is developed slightly below the economic cutoff grade for mining. Grade estimates are made within these boundaries. This paper documents a conditional simulation study to evaluate the uncertainty contributed by both the grade shells and grade estimates. Multiple realizations are generated for the grade shells and the grades. The full combinatorial of realizations are merged to assess the uncertainty and the relative contribution of the grade shell and grades.

This paper describes highlights of the Placer Dome MiniMole project - the development and testing of a robotic machine for mining narrow ore veins. A prototype hydraulically controlled robotic machine was built and tested. The machine provided a platform for testing numerous cutters in the field. Other cutters, e.g. undercutting devices, were tested in the lab. Extensive analyses were done on specific energies and cutter penetration. Three sets of quarry trials were done, then the machine was tested in an underground mine. Rock UCS values varied from 180 MPa to 230 MPa. The paper includes lessons learned and recommendations based on the project findings.

This technical note describes a problem with WANG82, a ventilation network analysis programme. The problem was highlighted by Renison Ltd when using the programme on large, complex networks. Under certain circumstances the programme produced incorrect results or failed to converge to a solution.

Construction contracts in the USA contain the clause "Value Engineering" ? an interesting and curious clause allowing contractor initiated design changes. Misleading is the interpretation of value engineering implying cost saving and sharing with the owner, and curious is the timing, just before beginning of actual construction. It is not surprising that such a clause would simply be ignored, because it involves change, often major design changes in very short time; and change is feared, moreover, it is vehemently resisted by all parties, owner, designer, contractor. The problem in the USA may lie in the divergence and separation of the two entities: Designer/Engineer and Builder/Contractor, assigned to the "one" engineering project. The priorities and incentives of these two groups are very different. The Engineer spends years, even decades, in design and prepares contract drawings often without a deep understanding of construction methods. Worse, with all the time available to him and in our era of tremendous advances in computational methods and speed, the designer turns in plans that are inexcusably exaggerated code-based design with excessive safety factors. As to the Contractor, he builds, often without appreciation of design principles or regard for design engineers. Redesign to apply a new technology or optimization of an inferior design just before construction becomes unthinkable. It is not surprising that adverse and hostile relationship between the designer and the contractor is a norm with extended disputes and claims, not to mention the cost these entail. Surprisingly, "Value Engineering" was successfully implemented in record speed on several very large projects in the metropolitan New York area. The process of change was unconventional, painful, and even comical. Four case studies are presented: two Design/Build: the 1.2 billion dollars Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit System in New Jersey and the 90 million dollars MTA Bus Depot in Manhattan, and two Conventional Design/Bid/Build: the 90 million dollars Queens Boulevard Bridge and the 150 million dollars Long Island Expressway.

The last 25 years have seen rapid expansion in the use of helical screw pile foundations and tiebacks for new and retrofit construction of buildings and earth retention structures. An estimated $100 million was spent in 2002 on helical foundations and tiebacks in the United States alone. While design information is available in the literature, information regarding quality control, inspection and performance monitoring is lacking. Recognition of at least one manufacturer's helical foundation material by the Uniform Building Code, Standard Building Code, and BOCA (all three codes now combined into the ICC International Building Code) has given added urgency to the dissemination of reliable and practical quality control, inspection and performance monitoring procedures. This paper describes a set of such procedures that have been followed for 17 years by engineers experienced in the industry who have directly installed or been involved in the installation of over 140,000 helical foundations and tiebacks in divers soil conditions for various types of structures, including earth retention structures. Topics covered include design responsibility, building code listings and requirements, manufacturer ISO certification, manufacturing process, material and installation specifications, installation contractor certification, field placement, installation procedures, field inspection, building code inspection and performance monitoring. The paper concludes with a step by step example of practical quality control, inspection and performance monitoring procedures on a typical helical foundation project.

"In early 1988 the decision was made by Noranda Minerals Inc. to install pressure filters at the GECO mill to replace the vacuum disk filters and bunker-C fired rotary kiln dryers. Two filters were installed, one for copper concentrate and one for zinc concentrate. Completion of the project was scheduled for the third quarter of 1989. The filters were made operational in October 1989. Some work remains to be done yet on loadout conveyors for total project completion. Capital expenditures for the project have been approximately $2,700,000 to date. The paper describes the selection criteria for the filter, the installation, startup and associated problems.1. INTRODUCTIONThe filter model chosen for the project was the Verti-Press model VP-50-6(7) (Figures1 ,2 and 3) by Filtra Systems of Farmington Michigan, USA. The decision to purchase the Filtra Systems filter was based on gaining familiarity with a different, mechanically simpler pressure filter than the Larox design and to a lesser extent a necessity for repairs to the the disc filter, rotary kiln dryer system used at the GECO operation for its' copper and zinc concentrates. The fact that it is manufactured in North America was an important consideration. The same basic principles of pressure filtration as the Larox machine are used but the implementation is quite different and somewhat simplified with some interesting innovations. 2 filters were installed to allow direct and immediate comparison of the same machine on both fine and coarse materials. Copper concentrate is reground for cleaning on the flotation circuit while zinc is not. Screen analysis of composited samples of concentrates for 1988 indicated that expected copper concentrate would be approximately 66% minus 400 mesh and zinc 50% minus 400 mesh (Tables 1 & 2).The filter is composed of six horizontal chamber module layered vertically and held together in a frame by 1 O large bolts; torqued down to 4000 ft-lbs. 6 individual belts are used; each with its own drive system. The belts themselves are of a 3 piece design with a filter cloth portion, a support belt and a rubberized intermediate portion. They are held together with steel clipper lacings. A basic description (1) of the filter operation is as follows. ""The horizontal filler chamber is closed by hydraulically pressurizing seals across each end of the filter chamber to 200 psi. The feed pump then pumps slurry into the filter chamber. Suspended solids are retained on the filter belt and the filtered solution drains into a lower drip tray and flows from the filter by gravity. At the end of the filtration or feed cycle, a rubber diaphragm in the filter chamber is pressurized hydraulically to 100 psi pressure. This removes all free liquid from the filter chamber and the filter cake. After the diaphragms are retracted the filter cake is blown with compressed air to remove any residual cake moisture. The seals are then retracted and the belt is advanced to discharge the filter cakes. During the cake discharge the belts are washed with a spray header located at the drive end of the filter. The belt assemblies move one (1) complete revolution during the cake discharge cycle. The cycle automatically repeats until the filter is shut down by the operator."

Near-field blast vibration response of restrained pipelines either buried or exposed was studied during rock excavations at sensitive locations for Stage-II (4x500 MW) commissioning work in a super thermal powerplant of the National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd. (NTPC) of India. The existing running plant of capacity 1000 MW has many important installations including pipelines of varying diameters. These pipelines were very close to the blasting locations (mostly within 12m). Blast optimization and consequent monitoring of vibrations were carried out simultaneously for more than 250 experimental blasts conducted by the authors. This paper emphasized, particularly, on the safety of pipelines and their responses due to repeated blasting impacts. A few guidelines supported by theoretical derivations are provided for futuristic research.

The reason for this is that there are a large number of variables affecting blasting results and not all of these can be accounted for by a few rules or a few sets of equations. Waste phosphatic clay presents a difficult disposal problem and a significant loss of P2O5. Recent developments make this study on the use of phosphatic clay as a feed material for H3PO4 production worthwhile. (a) New data from Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR) suggest that the Bclay^ waste can be effectively treated by improved solid separation coupled with flotation to produce feed material for recovering additional phosphate. (b) The use of BOLI Flowsheet^ provides capability to predict performance of aqueous-based processes for a range of possible operating conditions. Using the new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enabled the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current P2O5 ore deposits. Predictions using OLI Flowsheet were able to identify process conditions that effectively overcome the difficulty of high Mg content of phosphatic clay. Estimated manufacturing cost in the current study lead to valuation of the P2O5 content of the phosphatic clay recovered/utilized at 60 to 70% of that of the phosphate rock feed material currently used. Phosphatic clay should be considered as a valuable material that is currently given zero value. The new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enables the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current phosphate ore deposits by extending the fraction P2O5 of recovered

Colloidal interactions play a critical role in mineral processing, including grinding, physical separation (particularly flotation), dewatering, and tailings management. Despite great energy input in comminution to liberate valuables from gangues, heterocoagulation between valuables and gangues would prevent the separation of valuables from gangues. On the other hand, selective coagulation/flocculation to increase the size of desired fine particles could enhance physical separation and dewatering, while dispersion is needed for fine grinding. To control the state of colloidal dispersions by creating favorable conditions, it is of paramount importance to study colloidal interactions in a relevant system and understand underlying mechanisms. This review summarizes recent advances in developing the-state-of-the-art techniques and novel methods of measuring colloidal forces, including atomic force microscope, surface force apparatus, zeta potential distribution measurement, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, and our recently developed integrated dynamic force apparatus. The basic principle of each technique was introduced first, followed by a summary of critical information derived for the relevant mineral processing systems. Finally, the pros and cons of each technique were discussed to emphasize the use of complementary techniques that assist in solving fundamental problems in mineral processing.

The completion of the first two open hearth furnaces in the new No. 2 open hearth plant at Port Kembla will increase Australian production of steel by 350,000 tons of ingots per annum.The paper gives an outline of the essential features of open hearth design and auxiliary equipment required to operate the two modern open hearth furnaces at present being installed.INTRODUCTIONThe increasing demand for steel required by Australian secondary industries led to the decision to construct and operate No. 2 open hearth plant at Port Kembla. Two basic open hearth furnaces of the most modern design are under construction and it is anticipated that these units will be commissi.oned in September 1956. Australian steel capacity will thereby be increased by approximately 350,000 tons of ingots per annum.PLANT LAY-OUT AND CONSTRUCTIONIn the design and lay-out of this plant the emphasis has been on efficient material handling with simplicity of design and operation. Overseas methods were studied and these studies, together with experience gained at Newcastle and Port Kembla open hearth shops, enabled this plant to be built to a standard which compares favourably with any other in the industry.Initially two furnaces, each of 2,75 tons capacity, have been built, but provision has been made in. the design and lay-out to enable expansion to six furnaces.The location of the new plant in relation to the existing units will be noted in Fig. 5. The request for proposal from the U.S. Bureau of Mines outlined the purpose of this study in the following terms. "High grade near surface deposits are largely a matter of history. Most of the current mineral production in the united States is from large low grade ore deposits mined by large scale methods. It appears likely that exhaustion of near surface deposits and public resistance to open pit mining will tend to reverse the present trend toward open pit mining and lead to increased reliance on large scale underground mining. In view of the long lead time needed to improve basic technology, an in-depth study of the major underground mining methods is needed. "This study is intended to provide a systematic review and analysis of large scale non-coal underground mining technology with particular emphasis on current practices and problems, needed technological improvements, existing or potential environmental conflicts, and possible modifications or innovations that will assist in the satisfaction of projected national mineral supply requirements."

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of remotely applied nitrogen-enhanced foam to aid in efforts to isolate and suppress a mine fire. The foam, in combination with a remotely-installed cementitious mine seal and a novel borehole pressure sampling methodology to determine the location of the suspected ignition source, was used to help control ventilation and inert the area surrounding the suspected ignition source by isolating it from oxygen. This allowed mine rescue teams to safely enter the mine, seal the area, and begin recovery operations to successfully return the mine to full production.

Suggestions have been made at various times that there may be a recurrence of lodes similar to those at Kalgoorlie in the country to the south of the Golden Mile, but, so far as is known, there has been no geological evidence to support these suggestions apart from the possible extension of the younger quartz-dolerite greenstone in this direction.Geological mapping carried out by the writer in the Coolgardie district in 1946, provided some additional geological evidence to support this claim, and the ideas then held have since been expanded and are now considered to be sufficiently advanced to present them as concrete suggestions. As will be seen from the following pages, the critical area for lode prospecting is Hannan's Lake, where the basement rocks may include younger quartz dolerite greenstone, which, although perhaps distributed over a smaller area than at Kalgoorlie, could, on structural grounds, have a similar fracture system and similar ore deposition.There is little need to stress the importance discoveries in this area would have in prolonging the life of the field, and stimulating the post-war gold mining revival.Previous Work: Only the publications having a direct bearing on the preparation of this paper are given in the list of selected references, but the writer is very conscious of the fact that much other geological work has been carried out in the Kalgoorlie district since its discovery, by the W.A. Department of Mines, by mining companies, and others, all of which has contributed to the present knowledge of the field, and acknowledgment of the value of this work is given herewith. In presenting the suggestions in this paper a broad structural control of ore deposition is assumed, but this has already been established in other parts of the goldfields of Western Australia, including adjacent areas. In the early nineteen thirties, the Western Mining Corporation commenced work on the basis that there was a close relationship between geological structure and auriferous ore deposition, and a similar approach was first made by the Geological Survey of Western Australia in the South Yilgarn in 1935. These ideas were further developed during later surveys, particularly in the North Yilgarn and the Mount Margaret Goldfield.During the Coolgardie Survey in 1946, broad structural mapping was done in greater detail than before, and the structural ideas were implemented and further developed, leading to some success.Other work to which particular acknowledgment is given is that of Stiltwell, Gustafson and Miller, Forman, Prider and Finucane, at Kalgoorlie, and that of Honman in the Kalgoorlie-Coolgardie district, references to which are given at the end of this paper.Valuable constructive criticism of this paper has been given by Professor E. de C. On January 14, 1974 a fire occurred in the 3 East mains of the Joanne Mine of Eastern Associated Coal Corp. in Rachel, West Virginia. The mine was evacuated without injury and sealed completely at the surface within 24 hours. It was decided by the coal company along with the U, S, Bureau of Mines, the West Virginia Bureau of Mints and MESA that remote sealing of the fire zone would be attempted. This report summarizes the remote sealing effort and those activities directly related to the remote sealing effort. This chapter provides a brief history of previous remote sealing attempts, a description of the recently developed remote sealing system and a description of the Joanne Mine operation as it related to and affected the remote sealing effort.
