The Rosia Montana gold deposit is located within the æGolden QuadrilateralÆ area in the Apuseni Mountains of Transylvania, Romania. The deposit is situated approximately 85 kilometres north of the regional centre of Deva, within the province of Alba, at elevations of up to 1100 metres above sea level. The Rosia Montana deposit contains a current resource of 344.07 million tonnes at an average grade of 1.3 grams per tonne (g/t) gold (Au) and 6.0 g/t silver (Ag) for a total (measured, indicated and inferred) contained resource of 14.29 million ounces of gold and 67.00 million ounces of silver. The resource was calculated using a 0.6g/t Au cut-off, a 10 x 10 x 10 metre block size and multiple indicator kriging. The low sulfidation style epithermal mineralisation at Rosia Montana is hosted within Tertiary age dacite intrusions and related vent breccias. Mineralisation is generally disseminated and associated with silica, adularia, illite, pyrite and carbonate alteration of host rocks, with minor late carbonate-base metal veins. Precipitation of precious metals is generally considered to have occurred as a result of over-pressurization, boiling and subsequent brecciation. The dacite intrusions are hosted in Cretaceous shallow marine and deltaic shales and slates, which overlie older Paleozoic sedimentary and metamorphic rocks within uplifted sections of oceanic sea floor.

Coal augering is an ideal method for recovering coal from the highwalls of open cut coalmines. Coal augering is a simple process whereby additional flights are added to the auger cutting head and auger holes are drilled at 1.9 m diameter up to 200 metres deep. Traditional monitoring was located at the mouth of the hole and if methane was encountered above two per cent, inert gas was delivered into the mouth of the hole to deplete the oxygen content at the auger cutting head below 12 per cent. The auger operator was asked the question ‘how do you know that this is the case?’ Trials were undertaken to prove that the oxygen content at the cutting head did drop below 12 per cent (the lowest limit for methane to ignite, also known as the oxygen nose point). Initial trials showed that the oxygen content in the mouth of the hole did not drop below 12 per cent and modifications were made to hold the inert gases in the mouth of the hole so that the auger flights could take this inert gas into the hole. In-hole monitoring, after completion of mining and after extracting the auger flights, showed that the atmosphere quickly returned to fresh air. In-hole monitoring was also tried during the augering process and yielded valuable results. This paper will discuss the results of the monitoring, information on the gas results obtained and the methodologies used to optimise the oxygen content at the auger face.CITATION:Watkinson, M and Leisemann, B, 2017. Differentiation of a basaltic (?) magma occurred in an active volcanic area during the late Miocene and Pliocene, and a change in the general mode of extrusion from fissure flow for the basalt to explosion for the andesite reflects an accompanying increasing magmatic viscosity. A caldera formed after the flow phase was completed and was filled with coarse agglomerate, much of which has a fused appearance. After an erosion interval its shape was modified and it became gradually deeper as repeated explosions from growing andesitic volcanoes caused large quantities of pyroclastic material to be deposited. At the close of this phase the floor abruptly collapsed when a, large block of the underlying crust was engulfed. The incompetent pyroclastics filling the caldera steepened in dip and the ensuing fractures were filled by the rising magma as dykes and sills and a chonolith formed below the caldera at a shallow depth. The ensuing activity reveals a further stage in differentiation and biotite is an important new ferromagnesian to be observed in the new rocks.Fracturing of the surrounding basalts was most intense in the rocks forming the periphery of the caldera where steeply and flatly dipping faults resulted from increasing horizontal pressure directed towards the caldera.Further differentiation resulted in the increased crystallization of orthoclase felspar, as evidenced by the numerous intrusives of trachy andesitic composition. Magmatic freezing caused mineralizers to accumulate at the top of the chonolith. These eventually escaped and auriferous pyrites, tellurides, quartz, and calcite were deposited in the surrounding rocks.The flatly dipping fractures are the most important and can be expected at various depths in a zone about 4,000 ft wide surrounding the caldera. Latest movement along these was controlled by magmatic consolidation rather than the shape of the caldera. Some flat faults were able to remain open during mineralization and acted as a feeder for the shallower fractures, thus limiting the depths to which the steeper dipping fractures were mineralized with the possible exception of one particular Nw.-striking lode (the Crown-Crescent).INTRODUCTIONThe gold deposits of the Tavua district were discovered in 1932 and from 1935 to June, 1961, 1,985,041 fine ounces of gold were produced from 4,202,504 tons of ore. Thirty mixed cultures of microorganisms from soil, water and mineral samples from the Groote Eylandt Mining Company mine site were approximately three times more effective in biodegrading manganese dioxide (34± 18 mg Mn++/1/day) than sixteen purified strains (11 ± 10 mg Mn++/1/day) isolated from the primary enrichment cultures. Two pure bacterial genera identified as a Pseudomonad and a Bacillus, with an excess MnOz and nutrient, were able to dissolve 106 mg Mn++/litre/day in mixed culture compared with 29 mg Mn++/litre/day when grown separately.

Thiosulfate offers a non-toxic alternative to cyanide for processing gold ores. The mechanism of leaching gold using ammoniacal thiosulfate solution is driven by the Cu(II)-Cu(I) redox couple and is complicated by competing ligands such as NH3 and S2O32-. It is shown that an understanding of the copper speciation and sulfur speciation is required to optimise this system. This paper presents Eh-pH and speciation diagrams for varying concentrations of Cu(II), S2O32- and NH3 and discusses the conditions under which various copper and sulfur species are stable.

A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) has been applied, almost exclusively, to flat or gently rolling surfaces. One of the primary steps in the FRA is to loosely grade the top 1.22-m (4-ft) of soil or substitute root growth medium to avoid excessive compaction. Concern has been expressed by regulators and the public that loose grading on steep slopes could lead to slope failures, which is one of the issues that SMCRA sought to correct. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. There has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analyses indicate that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope.

For certification of blast resistant windows, current tests consist of arena tests or large air gun tests. Arena tests involve the detonation of more than 1000 pounds of explosives with windows placed in the range of hundreds of feet. The result of an arena test is a loading on a window consistent with an expected industrial or terrorist blast. Due to the nature of this type of test, only a limited number of facilities are available and operational costs can be extremely high. Air gun tests involve the use of compressed air and a failing diaphragm fired through a large tube. Although this test is more cost effective and easier to administer with lower environmental impacts, it is not an explosive loading and does not create a negative phase on the tail of the pressure pulse. Simply using a small charge in close proximity to the window is not a viable option either. The pressure peak can be reached using this method, but the duration of the pressure pulse is such that the positive phase impulse is on the order of ten times less than that for an arena test.

One way to ensure dragline productivity is by Increasing the size of the dragline bucket. In August 1994, Optimum Colliery in conjunction with Van Reenen Steel, Northwest Applied Technology, SSAB of Sweden and Barlows Equipment launched the new lightweight dragline buckets. Optimum built the first prototype bucket that was used for the deslgn for future buckets. After knowledge had been gained from measuring the input force of the bucket Northwest Technologies designed the new bucket with finite element analysis. Together with the knowledge of quenched and tempered steel from SSAB of Sweden and Barlow Equipment, the new Wrightech bucket was born.

"Chile based SQM S.A., exploits potassium chloride rich salts at the Salar de Atacama, in northern Chile. The process includes the solar evaporation of natural brines existing in the Salar salt bed, followed by conventional flotation to recover Muriate of Potash (MOP) for fertilizer use.This paper describes a structured method developed to aid in understanding the metallurgical response of the solar evaporated salts to conventional flotation. The method uses classical metallurgical data analysis combined with laboratory and plant-scale testing, and rudimentary mineralogical studies.As a result of the study, several changes were made to the flotation circuit which produced an operation that is much more consistent and easier to control, and has an increased recovery. An optimized circuit, currently being financially evaluated, has also been conceptually designed based on the findings of this work.INTRODUCTIONSQM S.A. is the world’s largest producer and distributor of specialty fertilizers, iodine, lithium, as well as a wide array of industrial and specialty chemicals. Shallow rainfall-induced landslides in residual and colluvial hillslopes and steep embankments are a common occurrence in many settings [1, 2, 3]. While occasionally posing a threat to property and life-safety, they more often present an ongoing maintenance problem and can lead to the initiation of larger failures. Typically, these slides consist of 2 to 4-foot thick translational movements of silty and clayey soils down slope through the reduction of strength from increases in pore water pressures. Direct surficial infiltration and indirect groundwater seepage are the normative triggers for failure. In the residential community of Blackhawk, California, located east of the San Francisco Bay, these types of landslides are a common occurrence (Figure 1). However, shallow landslides have also been a repetitive and constant problem along many state highways where steep embankments have been constructed in close proximity to busy thoroughfares. Given the real threat to property values in residential and commercial settings and the constant maintenance problem posed to lifeline structures such as utilities, roadways, and pipelines, new methods to deal with these landslides are needed.

Hydraulic filling as practised in Kalgoorlie has created world wide interest, with these pressures and percolation being vital points.Early in the 1950s, representatives of the Kolar field were conduGted over the local mines where stopes at depths below 2,000 ft were being filled. The problems of pipe pressures were their main consideration since depths of up to 10,000 ft were envisaged.Mr Krishnaiah and Mr Murthy from the same field are with us today and perhaps we may hear of their experiences with depths of 6,000 ft and long lateral lines.J. Oxyfuel combustion is currently one of the principal technological options being considered for capturing carbon dioxide from pulverised coal power plants. In oxyfuel combustion, coal is burnt in a mixture of recycled flue gases and added oxygen instead of in air. In principle this yields a flue gas containing only carbon dioxide, water vapour and small amounts other impurities. Oxyfuel combustion is superficially similar to combustion in air, but there are inevitable differences. This paper describes ignition tests on pulverised coal suspensions using a suite of coals of different rank and from different countries of origin and over a range of oxygen and coal concentrations of interest for oxyfuel combustion. The ignition tests were carried out using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 20-litre explosion chamber. The purpose was to determine how easily the various coals ignite and burn in mixtures of O2 and CO2 compared to their combustion in air. The residual char volatile and ash contents for the ignition residues were measured using a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA), allowing Q factors (i.e., enhancement in apparent volatile yield due to higher heating rates and/or heterogeneous reactions) to be determined and compared. An ignition index has been derived from the explosion and char data. This index has been used to rank low volatile coals for ignition propensity in air. The results show that to obtain ignition and combustion comparable to that in air, the oxyfuel O2-CO2 gas mixture must contain over 30% O2. Keywords: CO2 capture, combustion, pyrolysis, oxyfuel.

"Often mineralogy dictates the physical properties of a material rather than chemistry. This in turn affects how that material behaves in a process plant, and whether optimum conditions for refining one mineral are different to those for refining another. For example how does refining copper from chalcopyrite differ to refining copper from bornite?Minerals are naturally occurring inorganic solids that have a definite chemical composition and an ordered atomic (crystalline) structure. X-ray diffraction is a common and highly developed method to identify and quantify minerals. X-rays are fired onto a material and the mineral is identified by the angles where the diffracted X-rays are in phase.Most X-ray analyzers are laboratory based. A sample is prepared and analyzed by a detector that travels in an arc to collect the diffraction pattern. COSMA has a curved detector which picks up the complete x-ray pattern instantaneously. Therefore, material is collected and transported through the machine where is it is analyzed continuously.COSMA measures about 0.5 tons of material per day, while laboratory analyzers measure a few grams at a time. Real time data trends are produced allowing for improved process evaluation and automatic control. The COSMA on-line system has taken X-ray diffraction out of the laboratory into the field.There are a number of systems in operation in cement production. It is recognized that on-line mineral analysis has a role in many other processes. This paper presents the technology and invites further discussion should the technology be beneficial to members of the audience.INTRODUCTIONThis article describes COSMA, a system that provides direct and continuous on-line mineral analysis using X-ray diffraction in the field. While X-ray diffraction is a common technique used in mineral analysis, the time from sampling to analysis can be hours and plant operators typically do not get the data in time to control a process or respond to an upset. COSMA provides rapid measurement, analysis and feedback of data, in real time. This provides powerful information that can be used to optimize operation, thereby reducing costs and increasing quality."

This paper reports a biogeochemical study of the Siberia lode of the Herberton tin field. Soil near the orebody contained high levels of Fe, Cu, Pb, Sn, As, Mld Mn. Polycarpaea spirostylis and Indigofera dominii were associated with these high levels but several other species apparently could not tolerate them. The potential of these species as indicator plants is discussed.

As mining progresses in the West, the depth of material has increased, making highwall stability a major factor in safety and production. The Jim Bridger Coal Mine’has made highwall stability a priority, concentrating on safety as well as increasing and improving production. Overburden depths are increasing dramatically; the geological environment consists of medium to sot? material, faulting, water, and current pit alignment not favorable to joint planes. Angle drilling the presplit at 20 degrees became necessaryas vertical presplit drilling produced wall failures.

"As part of a Nation-wide program of the United States Government to develop natural resources, funds were made available to the Bureau of Mines for the investigation of the ""Reduction of Iron Ores by Solid and Gaseous Fuels."" These investigations are concerned with the direct production of iron from its ores without the use of a blast furnace. Many processes have been proposed for the low-temperature reduction of iron oxides, but few have been developed to commercial use. High-quality sponge iron is produced com-mercially only in Sweden.The cost of iron production depends in part on the grade of the ore and increases with decrease in grade. The substitution of cheap natural gas in a sponge-iron process for expensive coke in smelting in the blast fry pace would partly compensate for the use of low-grade ores. If a process can be developed in which inexpensive natural gas can be used as fuel and reducing agent, the large deposits of low-grade iron ore and the natural-gas resources of east Texas may be utilized in the commercial production of sponge iron.Sponge iron may possibly be used to supplement scrap iron, pig iron, or, in special instances, wrought iron. Sponge iron will vary but slightly in composition and will contain little or no nickel, cobalt, manganese, copper, and other allowying metals. It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain choice scrap iron of nonalloy composition. Pig iron contains 1.5 to 3.0 percent silicon and 3.0 to 4.5 percent carbon. Sponge iron generally contains less carbon than pig iron.The Madaras Steel Corp. in Longview, Tex., built a set commercial-scale sponge-iron plant which was intended to be operated in connection with a steel foundry. The process is based upon the reduction of preheated iron ore, with hot reducing gases under pulsating pressure. Although the Madaras Corp. had previously experimented with the production of sponge iron by reducing the ore with pure hydrogen, several attempts to use a re-formed natural gas as the reducing agent in this pilot plant were unsuccessful. The Bureau of Mines leased this plant and conducted an extensive investigation of the Madaras process on a semicommercial scale.The experiments were not entirely satisfactory, partly because of mechanical difficulties and partly because the reducing gas was not of the best quality. However, much information on the production of reducing gas by re-forming natural gas and on the reduction of iron ore with re-formed natural gas was obtained.The sponge iron produced contained approximately 0.1 percent phosphorus; and, after melting in an electric furnace, the iron contained approximately 0.15 percent phosphorus. The results of attempts to improve the ore by ore-dressing methods were not encouraging."

"Niobec has been using vibrating screens and screw classifiers as a double stage classification in its grinding circuit since the very beginning of its operation in St-Honoré. Most of the other mineral processing plants around the world uses cyclones as the classification device in their grinding circuit. The difference between these two methods are well known in terms of capital cost and grinding efficiency but the differences in terms of the impact on the downstream processing stages are a lot harder to predict and are case specific. In the interest of lowering the capital cost of a future expansion project, Niobec decided to test the cyclones in its actual grinding circuit and evaluate their impact on the recovery of the downstream processing stages as well as the operating cost of the mill. We switched between cyclones and screens for 8 month in 2013 and early 2014 and we are now operating only with cyclones since march 2014.INTRODUCTIONThe Niobec mine and concentrator were built in the mid 70’s and at that time, the mill was processing 1 500 tons per day. Over the years, many expansion projects have brought the plant to 7 000 tons per day. Throughout the initial concentrator design and commissioning, screens have been chosen over cyclones because of their higher classification efficiency which is known to reduce variability and limit the fine generation especially due to a high undersize classification efficiency. Just like many other plants, fine particle generation is a major problem at Niobec because of its negative effect on downstream processing stages. In the interest of lowering the capital cost of a future expansion project, Niobec’s engineering team decided, 35 years later, to test the cyclones in its actual grinding circuit and evaluate their actual impact on the final recovery and the operating cost of the mill.The grinding circuit is separated in two lines which will be called Circuit #1 and Circuit #2 along this paper. Circuit #1 is, as you can see in Figure 1, composed of a rod mill and two parallel ball mills in closed circuit with screens and screw classifiers. The screens oversize are sent to the screw classifiers while the undersize are sent to the next processing stage. The screw classifiers overflow are both sent back to the pump box while their oversize streams return in their corresponding ball mills for further grinding. Circuit #2 is, as you can see in Figure 1, quite the same as Circuit #1 except it has only one set of screw classifier and ball mill. Figure 1 also shows the modification in arrangement each circuits went through to integrate the new cyclones. One of the ball mills in Circuit #1 now appears dotted because it can still be used but is not now"

In engineering design of operator?s compartments, in underground mining equipment, ergonomics principles are often neglected or not given the full recognition they deserve. This paper defines ergonomics, applies it to machinery in an underground mining environment and describes the ergonomics analysis undertaken during the design phase of an EJC extra-low-profile mining loader. Encompassing the design of the operator?s compartment of this new loader, this paper illustrates the importance of ergonomics principles within the collective design process, ensuring that it is fully integrated into the design approach. An ultimate aim of this study is to ensure that all future designs follow this route to guarantee not only the outcome of a highly efficient, cost-effective and productive machine but that it is also takes the human factor into account, not only in maintenance but also in operation. Maximizing comfort will have the ultimate outcome of actually increasing productivity.
