Production scheduling of an open-pit mine is one of the most important steps in open-pit mining. The mine's production schedule defines the distribution of cash flows and, as a result, directly influences the net present value (NPV) and overall economic feasibility of a project. The need to plan and operate a mine with an optimum production schedule has been obvious for some time, but the methods used to obtain such a schedule have not been so obvious. The current practice is to do a trial and error analysis by hand. In an attempt to improve the way production scheduling is currently done, a new computer based production scheduling algorithm was developed. This paper describes the fundamentals of this newly developed heuristic scheduling algorithm and its application to a gold deposit. The results of this case study show that the schedules, based on the new method, provide improved cash flows compared to production schedules done manually.

Introduction A new mining agenda is before us. Born of government policies and world economies, the years ahead will show reduced growth. Metals, mining, and most other natural resource industries are inflation dependant and capital intensive. For these, a long period of contraction of outmoded and costly capacity will evolve. In some cases, this will be supplanted by new, lower cost capacity. But this will occur only if the cost of production - including cash operating and debt service costs - comes in at or below current market conditions. The industrial outlook for metals mining can be characterized as bearish. A US bank economist said mining companies planning their five-year forecasts should take current market conditions and straight-line them to the end of the decade. With low growth and low inflation, the real price of metals will remain flat or decline slightly. As a result, capital funding will be problematic. The low-cost producer will succeed. That means only the producer with low cash costs and low principal and interest costs per unit of production, will succeed. Gaining a perspective One must look back 30 years to see the evolution of the capital markets, for metal mine financing. This period can be divided into two economic periods. The 1950s were a time of stable economics. Mining companies earned and reported good profits. They had good corporate creditworthiness. In essence, mining companies of the 1950s were highly self-reliant. When equity infusions were needed, they were easily obtained. Financial management kept long-term debt low. Fixed rate, long-term financing was readily available in the long-term bond markets. The commercial banks of the 1950s were rarely used by the mining industry. When necessary, mining companies went to the banks for short-term financing - the kind that was needed for working capital requirements. Changing rhythms In the old rhythm there was an orderly market. Even into the mid-1960s, 75% of world annual copper production was controlled by eight companies: two in the UK, one in Belgium, and five in the US. During times of poor market demand, these producers would control supplies to the market. They took their losses out of retained earnings. Capital was easily restored during the ensuing good times. The new rhythm called for copper to be an economic means to a political end. Third World copper producers brushed aside the market fundamentals of commodity economics. Yet, the political solutions of these countries - their lack of response to the market - have seldom achieved their original objectives. Each commodity has its own old and new rhythm. Aluminum may have a similar rhythm, coming 10 to 20 years later than copper. By the late 1960s, changes were occurring. Inflation was on the rise. Ore reserve quality was falling. As a result, capital expenditures were necessary to maintain existing output. These costs created an increase in corporate leverage, thus adding to inflation and rising interest rates. Indicators A comparison of the gross national product (GNP) deflator index, consumer price index, and the metal mining deflator index is instructive. (Fig. 1 and Table 1). With 1972 equal to 1, note that the metal mining deflator reached its lowest point in 1967. From that point, the metal mining deflator has accelerated severely for 16 years. Only two minor downturns occurred during the business recessions of the mid-1970s and the early 1980s. In essence, Fig. 1 shows that while GNP has grown modestly, a miner's dollar in 1972 would require $3.48 in 1980. This is an almost 17% compounded growth rate over that eight-year period. Beginning in the late 1960s, for the first time in mine financing, the risk of success shifted from the corporate balance sheet to third parties. Limited-resource financings were taken up by banking syndicates that accepted certain of these risks. The lender needed to be well acquainted with the types of risks to be evaluated. These include resource quality and quantity, construction and completion, capital and operations costs, market risks, force majeure, and political and exchange rate risks. Project financings became the basis whereby mining companies were able to maintain their borrowing capacities. In essence, the lender was willing to share some of the project risk while only receiving lenders' returns on these investments. The success of the heap leaching process for extracting precious metals from low grade ores in many cases depends on successful agglomeration of clay fines. This paper relates the development of a new agglomera­tion agent, named Leachit, that has demon­strated an ability in some ores to decrease leaching time. Data from a commercial test­ing laboratory is presented to illustrate a comparison of leaching efficiencies with other agglomerative agents, such as lime and portland cement. Conclusions will point out certain advantages of Leachit to the heap leaching gold recovery industry.

This paper is a case history of a subsurface exploration program conducted for a system of sewer tunnels in upstate New York. The focus of the discussion is a non-technical outline of how the exploration process was organized to efficiently produce a large body of geological and geotechnical data. A brief description of the project and geological setting is provided, the scope of the exploration program is summarized, the logistics of collecting, processing and reporting subsurface data is outlined, and recommendations for management of explorations applicable to any rock tunnel are provided.

Methods of measuring in situ rock thermo-physical properties are rapidly evolving. Among those existing in the literature, a particular measurement procedure was selected for further development. The measurement is based on creating a spherical temperature field in a drill hole using a point source heater of constant heat flux. The bivariate temperature distribution 0 (r, t) is measured at several points along the length of the drillhole, radius r from the heater and at particular time intervals (t). A number of different evaluation methods were tested for calculating the unknown thermal conductivity (k) and diffusivity [] from the measured temperature and the known heat flux. The results showed that evaluation using the finite difference scheme and small temperature differences measured at points close together, cannot give a reasonable result. In order to solve the problem a new general analytical evaluation method is developed. Using an appropriate technique, it is possible to simultaneously obtain values for k and [], incorporating a semi least square technique to reduce the uncertainty in the evaluation. The new device and evaluation method makes it possible to obtain from a single drill hole highly precise k and [] values within an 8 hour period. The method has been used in several underground mines in the U.S. with good results.

In the early 1960's the feasibility of mathematical modeling was demonstrated in Northern Rhodesia and southwestern United States, where techniques were developed to use these models in a new approach to aid engineers in the estimation of ore reserves, mine designs, and financial evaluations. These rudimentary models closely followed the manual methods, producing ore reserves and production schedule estimates that were as accurate as the manual methods, yet were many times faster. Mines evaluated and designed using these new tools gradually came into operation during the 1970's and entered the phase at which production scheduling and ore-grade control became day-to-day problems. Management expected the number of operational engineers to be small because small planning engineering staffs had produced the original designs and operated the smaller high-grade pits. Unfortunately, the tools needed by the mine engineer to perform short-term production scheduling and ore-grade control were labor intensive; they had not yet been generally computerized. Several attempts to use the original or exploration model for these two functions were futile. While an exploration model based on data from exploration work proved sufficiently precise for overall mine design and long-term production scheduling, the model lacked the precision required for short-term scheduling and grade control.

The mining industry is presently one of the most heavily capitalized industries in the U.S. (U.S. - Statistical Abstracts, 1979). U.S. sales of new mining equipment (not including environmental, preparation, or long distance transportation equipment) are projected to reach approximately $5 billion/year in 1980 (Frost and Sullivan, 1979). Of these new equipment sales approximately 30 to 40 percent of this equipment will be used to replace old equipment. Therefore, an increase of efficiency in the use of equipment replacement capital could have substantially positive effects for the U.S. mining industry. This is very critical in these times of restricted capital availability, double digit inflation, burdensome governmental regulation, and rising foreign competition in the mining industry. This paper examines the numerous factors that constitute the typical mine equipment replacement problem. A computerized, mathematical model is formulated to utilize historic cost and production information to predict equipment cost versus age for the existing and potential replacement machines. Another part of this computerized model determines the best equipment replacement strategy that accomplishes estimated production goals at a minimum discounted cost. This computerized model is an easily used, consistent method of determining the optimum replacement age for any equipment unit or fleet of equipment at a mining operation.

Froth flotation is a process commonly employed for the selective separation of phosphate from unwanted mineral. Column flotation has become widely accepted in the mineral processing industry, including phosphate industries, due to its ability to improve selectivity, lower operating cost, lower capital cost, and superior control. In this work, a hybrid model is developed that combines a physicochemical model with artificial neural networks. The physicochemical model is based on axial dispersion with first order collection rates. A new approach, in which both frankolite (the desired mineral containing phosphate) and gangue (undesired product) are modeled, enables prediction of grade of the recovered product. Thus, two basic parameters are required in this model: flotation rate constants for frankolite and gangue. Artificial neural networks are used to predict flotation rate constants. The model also takes into account the particle size distribution and predicts grade and recovery for each particle size range. The model then combines grade and recovery for each particle size range to determine the overall grade and recovery of the column. The model is validated against laboratory column data.

For many years mill operator training was an informal process which involved senior operators training junior operators on an as-needed basis. The more rapid incorporation of new processing and information technologies, the goal to keep labour costs to a minimum by doing more with less, and the complexity of AG/SAG mill operation has forced companies to have a closer look at operator training. This paper describes a conceptual model of the charge of a AG/SAG mill that can be used for operator training. The conceptual model divides the charge into three regions: cascading, cataracting and toe. Mill behaviour is explained by the changes that occur in each region.

The analysis for total cyanides (CN, or the cyanide due to the combination of free, weakly associated and refractory cyanide complexes) is required by most regulatory agencies for determination of effluent compliance. This method requires a distillation of the sample at low pH's and is most often sent to contract laboratories at a high time and monetary cost. This paper describes a new micro­distillation apparatus which allows for a multiple of CN,"' analyses to be carried out simultaneously saving both time and money. It can be used in the field, since only electrical power is required for the method. While not being appropriate for reporting values to the respective regulatory agencies as of yet, it is quite valuable for screening a large number of samples prior to submission of the samples to a contract lab for "official" reporting.

Henderson Mine’s primary production transitioned from the main portion of the 7700 level to the 7210 main panel in 2005. On the 7700 level, the southwest (SW) panel was brought into production in 2014 and produced through 2020. A-Panel was brought online in 2019 and took over primary production in 2020. The 7210 north panel is under development with production expected to commence in 2025. The 7700 northwest panel is expected to be the mine’s last production panel.

Introduction Placer deposits account for one-half to two-thirds of the total gold produced worldwide. As many as 311 t (10 million oz) have been produced from some major districts. Several others are credited with 155 t (5 million oz). All the major districts and many lesser ones have similar characteristics. Consideration of these characteristics offers insight into the origin of gold in the deposit. Knowing the gold deposit's geologic history leads to useful conclusions in exploring for placer deposits and for deposits in consolidated areas. Placer Deposit Characteristics Table 1 lists 17 placer gold districts around the world and their characteristics. These include type and age of, mineralized source rocks, associated intrusive rocks, and age of intermediate sedimentary cycles. Although quartzite or sandstone occurs in the bedrock sequence in four of the 17 districts, slates, phyllites, or schists are present in all of the districts. Additionally, in all but three, the slates are pre-Mesozoic. And, in six of the remaining 14, the slates are Precambrian. Rocks intrusive into the slates are all of intermediate to acidic composition and are emplaced as stocks, dikes, or sills, rather than being batholithic in proportions. Intermediate interceptors have not been recognized in only three of the 17 districts. Data from China and Mongolia are inconclusive as to this characteristic. Black Shale Gold Higher than average gold values are found in modern sedimentary rocks in coarse granulites, conglomerates, sandstones, and gray-wackes. Not so predictably, higher than average gold values also occur in black shales and carbonaceous argillities. Li and Shokena (1974) found that, in the Proterozoic sedimentary and equivalent metamorphic rocks of the Enisei Ridge, carbonaceous and graphitic phyllites and schists were particularly enriched in gold. Korotayeva and Polikarpochkin (1969) reported gold content in organic rocks to be enriched up to 15 times more than the organic free shales and siltstones of the Nerchinsk Zavod region of eastern Transbaikal. Black shales can be gold interceptors as are rocks of the granulite facies. Gold occurs in shales in particulate, free form, in pyrite, adsorbed on clays, and precipitated on carbon. In copper-bearing shales of Poland's Fore-Sudetic monocline, Kucha (1973) reported gold present in organic compounds as well as in silver bearing minerals. Anoshin (1969) found a strong correlation between gold and the pelitic fraction of sediments in certain rocks of the Atlantic Ocean basin. Heavy metal absorption on clays results in agglomeration to the extent that the particles settle with the heavy mineral fraction in enriched strata. Piper and Graef (1974) think that gold in sediments on the flank of the East Pacific rise is of lithogenic origin. Crockett (1973), however, proposed a volcanogenic exhalative origin. A strong correlation between gold and volcanic activity exists in rocks of the Canadian Shield where tuffaceous sediments and porphyries are more frequently enriched in gold than rocks with no volcanic components. Volcanic rocks of intermediate to acidic composition are considered here to be the primary source of gold in black shales. Gold is concentrated in shales as detrital free grains with diameters less than 50 µm (270 mesh), as precipitates, and in pyrite or other sulfide minerals. This is the first step in the history of gold placer deposits. Grain Size Modification Gold, as free grains with diameters less than 50 µm (270 mesh), is too light to be concentrated hydraulically into placer deposits. Some process has increased the average size of the gold grains. Mobilization during regional metamorphism converts most of the gold into particulate grains or entrains it in microfractures in the sulfide minerals. With moderate folding, small, white, vitreous quartz veins develop. As deformation continues, larger, more conspicuous quartz veins are formed. Automation and robotics are the keys to new intelligent autonomous mining systems that can remove operators from hazardous and stressful mining environments and provide the tools for greater productivity. This paper presents the components necessary for an Intelligent Task Control System (ITCS) for machine control in dynamic unstructured mining environments. In particular, the design details of a controller for an automated excavator are developed. The excavator controller uses fuzzy logic to interpret forces and torques gathered from a wrist mounted force/ torque sensor during the excavation process. This approach enables the transfer of human heuristics and expert knowledge to the controller. Several excavation tests using the fuzzy logic controller are described. These experimental results represent the first step toward an integrated approach that uses force/torque, vision and other sensor data to perform generic tasks in uncertain mining environments.

A groundwater cut-off is needed to provide a stable face of tunnels to be constructed by jacking precast rectangular tunnel segments beneath commuter rail tracks for the new I-90 extension in Boston, MA. Extensive obstructions are present within the path of the tunnels. This paper describes how the use of artificially frozen ground is being planned to provide a reliable groundwater cutoff and assure a stable tunnel face. Monitoring during freezing assures continuity of the cutoff. Laboratory testing of frozen soil samples aided the design of this frozen soil boundary. Logistics of installing vertical freeze pipes are described.

The Waihi Gold Mining Company Limited, Martha Hill Project was the first major hard rock mining operation following the resurgence of the mining industry in New Zealand. Because of its location adjoining a town and at the southern part of the sensitive Coromandel Peninsula, the operation received a high level of public scrutiny. Very srrict limits for effluent criteria had to be met and led to the necessity for advanced wastewater rreatment technology. The process technology selected was the copper catalysed oxidation of cyanide using hydrogen peroxide, with subsequent removal of heavy metals by precipitation and filrration. This paper discusses the adoption of environment limits together with the detailed description of the plant and design criteria. Data of the one year's operational history is also presented.

"Even with modern detection and firefighting techniques, mine fires continue to be a safety concern. However, some underground mine fires can be addressed with the remote application of high expansion foam, reducing firefighter exposure to hazards. The flow of this foam can be numerically or computationally simulated in order to gain a better understanding of its behavior, but rheology parameters are needed as inputs to produce accurate simulations. For this reason, this work studies the rheology of firefighting high expansion foam using a foam generator and Poiseuille –Flow Rheometer. Rheological parameters for foams with expansion ratios between 250-1280 are represented by the consistency index (k) and the power law index (n) due to the results show a strong agreement with the Power Law model for non-Newtonian fluid viscosity. Furthermore, experimental results show that high expansion foam behaves as a shear thinning fluid with a power law index around 0.4 and viscosities in the range of s 0.1 Pa-s and 0.042 Pa-s under shear rates between 44 ??-1 and 187.3 ??-1. INTRODUCTION High expansion foams are called to foams with expansion ratio greater than 200. Expansion ratio (??) is defined as the ratio between the volume of foam produced (i.e. volume of foam solution and volume of gas) and the volume of foam solution used (NFPA 2014). Because of its high expansion ratio, one of the most important application of high expansion foams is to fill or flood large spaces such as hangars, storage facilities and underground mines for fire suppression. The foam can fill large structures using small quantities of foam solution within a short time (Sthamer 2012) (Martin 2012). Although the specific high expansion fire suppression mechanism has not been understood on a quantitative basis, a possible mechanism is fuel isolation when the foam act as a physical barrier between oxygen and the flame. Furthermore, as a consequence of this contact water is evaporated, causing cooling of fuel and surrounding air. Besides, water vapor as product of water evaporation causes a dilution of oxygen concentration available to the fire (Fleming and Sheinson 2012). High expansion foam can be applied remotely by means of conduit pipes or in situ close to the fire. In most of the underground mines scenarios, fires have to be addressed remotely to reduce miner and firefighter exposure to the hazards (Smith et al. 2005). Although high expansion foams should not be blasted and must be deposited directly on the area of application because of their low density (Harding et al. 2016) sometimes it is complicated to apply it directly to the fire due to complex access areas at underground mines. In these cases, foam has to be applied far away from the fire. Despite of this fact there is a lack of knowledge in terms of rheological behavior of high expansion foam under high shear rates (Gardiner, Dlugogorski, and Jameson 1998). Furthermore, there are a few attempts to simulate numerically the high expansion foam flow due to the ignorance of its rheological parameters and its complex behavior. (Weaire 2008)."

The International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) was formed in 1998 by 17 international mining companies to promote significant improvements in the management of sulphidic mine materials and the reduction of liability associated with acid drainage through knowledge sharing and research and development of technology. Since its inception two panels have been formed to identify and move forward with research projects and eight networks have been constituted to initiate interaction and knowledge sharing within the membership in specific areas of technical interest. An INAP web site has been developed to facilitate the sharing of information and to encourage the exchange and development of new ideas.

This paper describes the development of a new method and device for determining the in-situ mechanical properties of rock masses. The method involves a self-recording mechanical deformation gauge for sensing-recording she deformation of the borehole wall when loaded hydraulically. The self-recording feature of the gauge eliminates the difficult technical problem of transmitting signals over very long cables for measurements at great depths. Adopting a mechanical gauge instead of electronic, electrical, optical or grid techniques eliminates delicate instrumentation and installation problems. Moreover, mechanical gauges are inherently rugged and suitable for use in severe borehole conditions including very high temperatures. The technique was tested in limestone, basalt and granite specimen. The calculated mechanical property values for 1 the tests agree with those obtained by conventional testing methods. The self-recording mechanical deformation gauge has a minimum reading of 50 micro inches (1.27 x 10-3mm), comparable with electrical resistance strain gauges, capable of reading deformations over a range of 0.25 inches (6.35mm). The sensitivity, ease and accuracy of the method recommends it highly for in-situ rock modulus measurements.

The power industry throughout the world is in the midst of a significant transition that will result in a major restructuring. Deregulation of utilities in the United States is continuing, resulting in increased competition among power providers. The traditional ways that electric power is globally bought, sold and delivered will also change. However, according to the Department of Energy's (DOE) Pat Godley, one thing is clear: "Those who provide the power during the 21 st century will be those who are willing to change - those who are willing to accept new ways of doing business and willing to employ new technologies." Godley is assistant secretary of fossil energy with DOE. Her comments came during the opening remarks at the Fourth Annual Clean Coal Technology Conference, held in Denver, CO, Sept. 5-8, 1995. The conference was sponsored by DOE and the Center of Energy and Economic Development. Under the theme "Global Opportunity," more than 300 coal and utility executives spent three days discussing the new face of the electric-power industry throughout the world and the new, mostly clean coal technologies (CCT) that will be available to power providers.
