Conventional logging tools such as density, neutron, and acoustic have ranges of investigation of tens of centimeters. The borehole gravimeter, however, has a range up to hundreds of meters. For example, from the center of a cylindrical ore body 0.20 g/cm3 denser than its surroundings, one can detect the boundary of the ore body at a radius as large as five times its height. More complex structures can be investigated with computer programs. We can predict the usefulness of proposed gravity surveys, or decide which suggested structure is most likely to have caused the results of existing surveys.

The Dead Sea is the only relatively large body of surface water having bromide concentrations comparable to those in the brines of the Smackover Formation in Arkansas. The Dead Sea, like the Smackover brines, contains a great deal of calcium and is very low in sulfate and iodide. The relationships between potassium, divalent cations, and chloride indicate that over 20 percent of the bromide in the Dead Sea is derived from some source other than by the evaporation of sea water. A similar type of study of the Smackover brines in Arkansas indicates that approximately 60 percent of the bromide has been derived from some source other than sea water. Both the Dead Sea and Smackover brines are very low in iodide suggesting that the excess bromide has not been derived from organic matter. The origin of the excess bromide is probably the same for both of these brines, but the source of this bromide remains unknown.

This paper discusses the results of an experimental investigation to study the release of methane in coalbeds. Absolute porosity of coal samples was first determined experimentally. Following the porosity measurement, adsorption/ desorption tests were carried out to determine the gas content of coal and the rate at which it is released. Finally, micrographs were obtained using electron microscopy and the use of a physical model, developed to explain the gas flow behavior of coal, was justified. The results of this study indicated that the measured absolute porosity of the coal sample was between 5 an 6%. This was significantly lower than the porosity estimated by comparing the micrograph area occupied by the pores and the area of observation for several micrographs, suggesting that coal has a large number of pores with a very small volume. The micrographs also clearly indicated that coal has a large interconnected network of cleats and microfractures. The adsorption/desorption experiments showed a hysteresis between the adsorption and desorption isotherms. Also, the rate of desorption was found to be strongly dependent on the particle size of the specimen.

This paper reviews the development of the David Bell Mine, from early exploration, through discovery, construction, start-up, underground development, and production. Details are provided regarding the mine development, the mechanized cut and fill stope production, the proposed long-hole stoping with delayed backfilling mining method for the lower levels and the cyanide leach carbon-in- pulp concentrating process. The mine development remains on schedule and under budget with results very much as predicted in the feasibility study.

Silicon is usually considered to be a useful metallic alloying element. To be more truthful, it is not a metal at all, but a semiconductor, whose electrical resistance (when pure) is high and decreases with temperature. We will join the metallurgists, at least for this paper, and refer to it as a metal. In its commercially available form, silicon is metallic in appearance, brittle, with a density of 2.33, less than that of aluminum. Silicon dioxide or quartz has a high heat of formation, which not only makes the metal a useful reductant for other materials, but also makes it difficult to reduce from its ore. The melting point is 1412°C, slightly less than steel, but substantially higher than aluminum or cast iron. The alloys of silicon with iron, usually called ferrosilicons, have some unique advantages. The melting points of most alloys are substantially below those of iron or silicon (Fig. 1). The two major compounds formed (FeSi and FeSi2) help somewhat in the reduction of silicon by their energies of formation, but the influence of these phases on the mechanical properties is more important. Four major groups of alloys are made -- silicon metal (>95% silicon), 75-85% ferrosilicon, 50% ferrosilicon, and silvery pig iron (12-22% silicon). The alloys between 50 and 65% silicon and between 25 and 40% silicon are normally avoided because of structural instabilities, presumably of the two compounds, leading to disintegration of the alloys on cooling.

In recent years attempts have been made to fight open and intensive mine fires by the use of special extinguishers, which are able to produce great volumes of inert gases directed into the fire zone. These extinguishers are derived from turbo-jet engines used in aircrafts and adopted for operations in mine conditions. The purpose of this paper is to draw the attention to a computer simulation method, enabling studies of dynamical behaviour of mine ventilation processes disturbed by open fires, which are also influenced by measures taken during fire fighting actions i.a. the mentioned operating extinguishers. The first part of this paper gives an account of the principles on which the computer simulation program, concerning the non- steady mine ventilation process, the fire as a heat source and the extinguisher as a source of inert gas and moisture has been based. The next part of this paper deals with simplifying assumptions and the subsequent limitations of the derived simulation pro- gram. Finally, from an example of a computer simulation, the results will be presented and relations shown between parameters characterising the ventilation process during the fire fighting action.

Kaolin tailings ponds play an important role in reclamation of land and water. Discharges impounded from kaolin plants include oversize fractions consisting of coarse kaolin, mica, quartz as well as magnetically extracted contaminents, acid filtrates, and plant washdown streams. Tailing ponds perform an essential function in sedimentation of particulates, blending and reoxygenation of liquid waste, and neutralization and clarification of discharge water. During the past fifteen years, most kaolin firms have segregated their coarse filler waste to allow for possible reclamation for production of delaminated coating clay. This excess coarse filler fraction constitutes a reserve for future coating clay production.

In the Grasberg Mine, a series of orepasses of diameter 2 to 4m are being constructed, each one to carry as much as 10,000 tlhour of copper- and gold-bearing ore through single stage vertical drops of over 500m. At the base of each orepass, the fragmented rock falls into an orebin of diameter 1 Om and 100m deep. Long before the planned tonnages were reached on the early orepasses, a problem arose that was both serious and intriguing. Pressurization of air in the orebins caused by the falling rock reached such levels that when the feed to the top of an orpass was interrupted, a massive surge of air ascended rapidly and produced a dangerous backblast accompanied by dust; grit and rock fragments from the top of the orepass. Backblasts lasted for about one minute and were not only hazardous to the health and safety of personnel but also required time-consuming clean-up operations. The paper describes the aerodynamic analyses that were con- ducted in order to understand fully the mechanisms involved in the phenomenum, and the development of a procedure that al- lows the effects of falling material to be incorporated into existing ventilation network software.

INTRODUCTION This paper describes the use of a shield and compressed air for construction of a short section of a pair of twin single-track tunnels for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) transit system. Although only two blocks long, this section posed the greatest difficulties to both engineers and contractors, and is the most expensive section of line construction on the MARTA system. All this derives directly from its setting--these tunnels had to be constructed through mixed-face conditions. SETTING The Broad Street tunnels form a link between the Peachtree Center and Five Points Stations, in the heart of Atlanta's central business district (Figure 1). Peachtree Center sits atop a solid rock ridge, which inspired the design of a deep rock-mined station, as described in the 1979 RETC. Five Points Station is MARTA's hub--the intersection of the system's two main branches. It is located in the old railroad gulch, a filled-in erosional valley at the base of Peachtree Ridge, and was constructed by open-cut methods. The alignment and profile of the Broad Street tunnels were closely constrained by these two adjacent anchors, and in the six-block stretch between them there was very little room for maneuvering. Since the rock ridge petered out about in the middle of the section, it was evident at the outset that there would be about two blocks of rock tunneling at the north end, two blocks of soft ground construction at the south, and two blocks of mixed-face in between. It is this central two-block section that is the focus of this paper.

In North America, pipelines move more material than any other form of transportation. 1 Pipelines have been used principally for the transportation of liquids and gases; however, slurry pipelines have made notable gains in recent years enabling solid materials to be moved efficiently by pipelines. The obvious advantages of pipe-lines --low maintenance, low operating costs, minimal impact on the environment, greater land use, low labor intensity, safety and high operating factor --have stimulated researchers in England, West Germany, Japan, USSR and the USA during the past ten years to develop pneumatic capsule pipelines for the movement of bulk materials in large quantities. As a result of this work, pneumatic capsule pipelines are now available for the movement of dense bulk materials. Through these pneumatic capsule pipelines, material is moved in wheeled capsules which are pushed through the pipeline by flowing air. In this paper, a capsule pipeline system developed by the Georgia Institute of Technology and Tubexpress Systems, Inc. of Houston, Texas is discussed. The Tubexpress System Major Components The pipe used for a Tubexpress capsule system is standard thin wall welded steel pipe. Since pressures in the system generally do not exceed one atmosphere, the controlling design criteria for wall thickness of the pipeline is pressure from the overburden of the backfill if the line is buried or the structural requirements for supporting itself and the load if it is suspended or supported on piers. The mining industry is very capital intensive. Competition for shareholder investment has never been greater. Among our challenges is the need to meet shareholder expectations (return on investment), and one area of focus lies in our ability to deliver value on our capital investments. Our ability to meet project expectations affects not only the economics associated with the immediate project but also directly influences our ability to finance future projects. Moreover, our ability as individual companies to attract investor capital is influenced by how we have done overall as an industry, and our industry track record has not been that stellar. With safety, scope, cost, schedule, and quality as guiding principles, our project managers today must address high expectations on every project. This paper examines some items that should be on today's project management checklist. PROJECT ENGINEERING Herbert Hoover, himself a mining engineer, said Engineering is a great profession. There is the fascination of watching a figment of the imagination emerge through the aid of science to a plan on paper. Then it moves to realization in stone or metal or energy. Then it brings jobs and homes to men. Then it elevates the standards of living and adds to the comforts of life. That is the engineer's high privilege.

Pittsburgh No. 8 coal, cleaned by conventional froth flotation, was oxidized in a 2-L Parr stirred bench-top autoclave. Autoclave tests were carried out for up to 5 hrs under the following conditions: 150 to 225ºC, 60 to 500 psi 02 and 15 to 60 g of coal per 600 mL of distilled water. The oxidation of coal was evaluated by measuring the total acidic group formed on the surface of the coal and by measuring the adsorption (under standard conditions) of calcium ion from a solution. The degree of oxidation of the coal increased continuously, without much leveling off, with increasing oxygen pressure. With increasing temperature, the oxidation of the coal increased sharply between 150 to 175ºC and then leveled off above 175 °C. The adsorption of calcium was >3% on coal oxidized under the most favorable conditions. The adsorption of calcium on coal increased sharply with increasing equilibrium pH. The loss in Btu was found to be sensitive to oxidation temperature. This study concluded that the optimum oxidation of coal is achieved over 3 hrs at high oxygen pressures (e.g., 500 psi) at ~170ºC. This study also concluded that, when measured in terms of calcium adsorption, Btu loss and reaction time, the oxidation achieved in an autoclave is far superior to that achieved in a fluidized bed.

Disseminated epithermal gold metallization occurs within a breccia unit interpreted to be a submarine debris flow. Gold is associated with oxidized pyrite, fluorite, and jasperoidal silica. A minimum of 8 Mt (9 million at) of open-pittable mining reserves will be cyanide heap leached as run-of-mine ore at a rate of 0.9 Mt (1.0 million stpy). Careful evaluation of the combined results of successive sampling projects has established the pit plan, minable reserves, and process metallurgy of the operation. The sampling procedure utilized for a given test depended upon geological interpretation as well as the procedures, successes, and failures of previous tests. This paper summarizes the sampling and testing procedures of the development effort in light of the project goals and attendant problems in achieving them.

A really extensive acid sulfate-altered and mineralized rock in the southeast Red Mountains area is noted for its association with naturally occurring and mine-related acidic and metal-rich waters. Integrated geologic and aqueous geochemical studies demonstrate that the degree of metal mobilization and acid production in natural waters correlates well with the type of hydrothermally altered rock and structural features in which these water interact. Quartz-sericite-pyrite, quartz-alunite, and argillic alteration assemblages are associated with some of the most naturally acidic, high-metal waters in the study area; calcite-bearing propylitic rocks are related to the most pristine waters and buffer sulfate-rich, acidic waters produced by pyrite oxidation. Trace metals in natural waters are mostly derived from enargite, zinc-rich tetrahedrite and sphalerite. Pyrite oxidation contributes very little with respect to base-metals in these natural waters.

A coal preparation plant incorporates a variety of solid-solid separation processes that operate in relatively independent parallel circuits. Studies have shown that total plant performance can be optimized by selecting circuit cutpoints that maximize total clean coal yield irrespective of the performance of individual circuits. Although the optimum cutpoints can be determined using simulation programs, these mathematical routines require detailed washability data and empirical partition information that is not often available to plant operators. In addition, routine fluctuations in the washability characteristics of the plant feed make this approach impractical to implement in industrial facilities. As an alternative, practical optimization criteria can be developed for plant operators through a fundamental understanding of scientific principles involved in coal cleaning operations. This article provides an overview of the most important optimization criteria and presents several industrial case studies that illustrate the financial benefits of this practical approach m plant optimization.

Such conveyors usually require head and tail drives to lower the belt tension and belt strength required. This paper provides an overview of the problems encountered in controlling the head and tail drives on such conveyors and some of the solutions developed by CDI for several such projects.

The research is carried out to investigate the flow mechanics and effectiveness of face ventilation using induction fans, as an effort to provide a more efficient alternative to conventional auxiliary duct or brattice ventilation systems. The induction effects and plume longevity of fluid jets are being studied with the help of a plexi-glass model, using water as the fluid medium and creating a system that is dynamically similar to the flow in mine headings. This scaled model represents a typical 1.5m x 6m x 25m heading connecting to a crosscut. Reynolds Number criteria are used to obtain dynamic similarity of the flow in the designed model to simulate real mining conditions. The role of various parameters such as nozzle position in three dimensions, airway roughness, nozzle geometry, and flow rate in the jet are studied. During the laboratory tests, flow visualization techniques, coupled with still and video photography, were employed to identify the flow patterns. The results indicate that in typical coal mine headings, jet fans can produce effective face ventilation for distance up to 30 meters.

Placer material, regardless of the value of gold, tin, titanium, diamonds or other value mineral it contains, remains worthless until the valuable constituent is separated from the bulk of the material. This separation is no mean task when considering that a gold placer containing 0.01 to 0.03 oz/yd3 of gold, which is the range of grade of typical placer deposits; yes, 1:3,000,000! It is a miracle that gold placer mining has ever been profitable. Added to the situation of minute quantities of gold are several other problems, such as the gold often being very finely divided, the association of boulders and clay, and running and/or ground water. As each placer deposit is individual and distinctive, many factors have to be considered in planning the method for gold recovery from the alluvial deposit. Previous chapters have shown that in the exploration and sampling stage, some knowledge of the amount of each size of coarse and fine material which occurs in the deposit as well as the size distribution of the discrete gold particles is determined. Unless informed to the contrary, as a general rule of thumb, plant designers will consider that 40 percent of the material will pass through a 5/8-inch screen or punched plate hole. The recent increase in development of refractory gold deposits has resulted in changes to the traditional treatment processes. The selection of the preferred refractory treatment process is dependent on the mineralogy of the ore. One process, which has recently gained increasing attention, utilizes dry grinding and roasting of the whole ore. This paper will discuss some of the considerations to be addressed during the design of the process fl owsheet and what the effects of the various alternatives will be on the plant capital and operating costs. The paper will be based, in part, on current experiences with dry grinding, roasting plant design and start-up.
