1. Introduction The new Cleuson-Dixence development project in the Valais region of the Swiss Alps, involves the construction of a new link between the Grande-Dixence dam (still world recordholder with a height of 300 m) and a power house on the banks of the Rhone consisting of approximately 20 km tunnels and shafts, and involving a fall of about 1900 m. This 1200 MW project will replace an existing 900 MW structure built in the 1960s, no longer considered efficient. The new project comprises a head race drift about 15.8 km long, a surge tank, an inclined cascade shaft 4,2 km long, and an underground power station. The work for lots C and D (head race drift from Tortin to Tracouet, surge tank, six adits ans the complete inclined shaft) was awarded to our group (Prader, Locher, SELL, Losinger, Evéquoz, Dénériaz, Imboden and Bouygues). The geological conditions are: Lower part of the shaft (300 m) : sedimentary - sandstone and soft tertiary sandstone. The knowledge-based expert systems (KBES) is a potentially powerful technique to the mining engineer in traditional areas of mine design and operations, as well as in the emerging areas of mining automation and robotics. Since KBES is still experimental in many respects, caution must be exercised as this "high tech" tool is developed and applied to mining. The objective of this paper is to demystify expert systems by introducing the elements of KBES, discussing the strengths and weaknesses, and identifying some areas of application in mining, based on the authors' experiences.

Composition data is needed as input for executing process control and management of particulate separation for flotation control. While requirements for composition data can be satisfied in many cases by manual sampling and analysis, automatic sampling and assay systems are now viewed as justified for all but the simplest or smallest processes. On-stream X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRFA) has satisfied requirements for the main portion of metalliferous sulfide ore flotation processes as XRFA technology evolved in reliability and sophistication from its beginnings in the late 1950's. In recent years, advanced on-stream analysis technologies have reached levels of development suitable for use in process control to increase efficiencies of important processes in mining and minerals industries such as coal fines flotation and industrial minerals beneficiation (particularly phosphate beneficiation) where XRFA methods have been inapplicable. Recent technical developments pertinent to use of advanced technologies as well as improvements to established on-stream composition analysis methods are discussed.

This paper describes research being undertaken by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) which is designed to assist the continuous miner operator and section foreman in the performance of their jobs. The project will initially provide visual assistance to the miner operator, and later will semi-automate the mining (cutting) process. Using a technique known as "RF tagging," the project will also provide real-time or near-real-time information about the performance of the loading and hauling units to the section foreman, allowing him to quickly detect problems and take action where appropriate. The project is based upon the application of currently available technology, and the first phase is scheduled for in-mine testing within the next year.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) stretches from the equator to Latitude 12° South and from Indonesia's Irian Jaya Province in the west to the Solomon Islands in the east (Figure 1). The population totals 3.5 million people who are mostly concentrated in highland valleys on the main island and around the coast. This paper outlines the history of mining, describes the natural, cultural and regulatory setting of mineral discoveries and highlights, by example, some of the more idiosyncratic environ-mental aspects of mining developments in PNG. It concludes with remarks on the progress made in the fifteen years since environmental matters entered the agenda for the establishment of a new mine in PNG.

Several zinc showings, exhibiting many similarities to the well-known Balmat-Edwards zinc deposits of New York State, occur within the Grenville Supergroup strata of the Mont-Laurier Basin, Quebec. Metallogenic mapping programs have revealed much of the stratigraphic control of this mineralization. This control is observed on both regional and local scales. At the regional scale, these showings are confined to the perimeter of the Mt.-Laurier Basin, while at the local scale, a definite association between the zinc mineralization and dolomitic marble horizons is clearly exhibited from detailed mapping. These new exploration guidelines have proven to be useful for base-metal exploration in the Mt.-Laurier Basin and should be applicable to the entire Grenville Province.

Effective control of balling line circuits is a problem taconite companies have been dealing with for over thirty years. The sensitivity of balling circuits to changes in moisture, bentonite, concentrate particle size, and other operating parameters are the main reasons for control problems. This paper presents test results and describes the integration of existing instrumentation with a digital image analysis system on a balling circuit. This work has the goal of developing control strategies to automatically adjust water spray and bentonite addition, to optimize the size distribution on the roll screen and reduce the variability in control between balling attendants, resulting in more consistent greenball product quality.

Investigations of long-time grinding of fine quartz (to about 80% passing 0.35 pm) in a 0.6 liter stirred-media mill are described. Breakage rates and primary breakage distributions have been determined based on extensive characterization of the ground products by laser scattering/diffraction and gas adsorption. The results indicate that, while there is qualitative similarity between the breakage parameters for ultrafine and conventional (coarse) grinding, there are important, quantitative differences. In particular, it is found that primary breakage distributions become significantly narrower in the submicron sizes. The trend can be described using double-truncated log-normal distributions in which both a maximum (breaking) size and a grind limit are specified. The breakage distributions become progressively narrower as the size being broken becomes finer. Breakage rates follow a typical, consistent pattern in which the rate decreases with size according to a simple power law. Further decrease in the rates seems to occur after very long grinding times when the entire mill contents become finer than about 1µm. The effect is explained as a result of changes in the rate/size relationship in the submicron range.

The objectives for closure of a hard rock mine include minimizing long term environmental liability, attaining regulatory compliance, and maintaining geotechnical stability, while closing as cost-effectively as possible. Proper planning for closure should come during the feasibility study, design and permitting phases, and during operations as updates. The lack of a proper or updated closure plan can result in severe environmental and economic consequences. Effective mine closure is the result of a combination of innovative concepts, long-term commitments, and multi-party cooperation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss concepts, commitments, and cooperation as they relate to an effective closure plan.

Many investigators conducted surface force measurements between hydrophobic surfaces in water, and observed attractive force that was substantially stronger than the van der Waals attractive force. The excess force was appropriately referred to as “hydrophobic force”, for which many different theories have been put forth by numerous investigators. In an earlier publication (Yoon and Ravishankar, 1996), it was suggested that the hydrophobic force maybe due to the interaction between the large dipoles created by the surfactants adsorbing on solid surfaces in patches (or domains). In the present work, a mathematical model has been developed to further elaborate the theory.

This work applies the definition of "separation function" already introduced in the paper presented at the XVIII IMPC. This 'function" (defined for a certain size distribution after comminution of an ore) refers to the recovery distribution of a mineralogical species in a product made up of all the particles having at least a given content of that species. Many tests would be required to determine the liberation function for each mineralogical species, particularly for complex ores. Several stages of comminution would need to be examined and the mineralogical composition of the particles of each grain size class would need to be analyzed for each process step. A quick and dirty method is shown for obtaining the "separation function". It is based on the processing of data from topological maps of polished and/or thin representative sections of ore. By superimposing grids of different sizes over these maps and with appropriate combinations of mesh sizes, it is possible to simulate the grain size distributions linked to different stages of comminution and then evaluate the mineralogical composition of each grain. The procedure is carried out full automatically and can simulate a complete treatment circuit, imposing cut-off grades for the products at each separation phase. It is also possible to predict the results of treatment processes that involve grinding phases. The procedure has been successfully applied to complex ores containing several useful components.

Two of Peabody Western Coal Company's mine operations are the focus of this paper ... Black Mesa Mine and Kayenta Mine, both located in Northern Arizona. These two locations are unique for a variety of reasons. ? The two mines have only two customers, both power plants, one the Southern California Edison's Mohave Generating Station near Laughlin, NY, the other the Navajo Generating Station near Page, AZ. Close in proximity, these two locations ships nearly 12 million tons of coal per year. ? Material is shipped to these customers two ways: via a 273 mile underground slurry pipeline, which by the way is longest in the world, and by a 17 mile long conveyor to four storage silos. Product is then shipped via train from the storage silos to the plant sites.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to secure local aggregate resources that meet quality standards and local restrictions without conflicts with other land uses and environmental regulations. The successful integration of natural-resource information into land-use decisions is becoming increasingly important as the needs for both land and resources become more numerous, complex and urgent. Well-reasoned decisions about land-use are crucial to the Nation if infrastructure resources are to remain economically available. Provisions for uninterrupted future supplies of aggregate should be made using proper long-range planning that incorporate a multiple land-use program. That program would include identification and protection of natural resources, strategies that will permit development of resources according to future market needs and environmental considerations, and the beneficial reclamation of mined-out areas.

Mining can be categorized as a hazardous activity, considering some factors such as environmental conditions with a considerable presence of humidity, suspended particles, or falling rocks have affected the severity and number of accidents compared with other economic sectors. The industry analyzes incident reports to narrow the rate of severe injuries and fatalities, conducting root cause analysis and identifying leading indicators. As the International Council on Mining and Metals noted, the vast trove of incident data is not analyzed as much as possible due to a lack of analytics expertise at mine sites. However, machine learning could solve the problem of analyzing all the incident data in a no-timeconsuming way, considering the abundant data, and without using expert personnel in data science. Thus, a Convolutional Neural Network and a Naïve Bayes model were introduced to perform classification in the MSHA database. The database from 2020 consists of 60 fields to describe safety incidents; these fields include mine I.D., accident date, subunit (mill, surface), material extracted, and other metadata.

An overview presentation of the fast-track start up of Cerro Colorado, a new copper heap leach project in Chile's Atacama' desert. A brief explanation 'of location of the property, exploration history, geol-ogy, reserves and development are presented. The overview includes mining, crushing, agglomeration, and the solvent extraction-electrowinning recovery process. Challenges and requirements specific to heap leach systems will be addressed and analyzed. A detailed description will be given of the mobile heap leach conveying and stacking systems used in the building of heaps for on-and off-pad operations.

Zaldivar is an open pit copper mine operation located in the Atacama Desert, in northern Chile. The plant produces Cu cathodes using 4 solvent extraction trains. The plant was started up May 1995. Since 1996 the plant has been using on-stream analyzers based on X-ray fluorescence and titration for process monitoring and control. Elemental analyzer alone is not able to provide the critical information for plant operation, it has to be complemented by on-stream titrators integrated to one sampling system. The analyzers are located in a prefabricated shelter. The analyzer system project, operation and performance issues are the main topic of this paper.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are becoming a more commonly used tool for resource estimation as they provide not only a database management platform, but also the graphical capabilities to visualize resource characteristics. Interpolation methods used commonly in these resource studies do not typically provide a quantitative answer to the question: "How accurate is the estimate?" By comparing localized measurements at several locations to the interpolated thickness distribution used in a resource estimate, a quantitative analysis of accuracy can be obtained. The technique is demonstrated with a case study from Central Appalachia.

The dilemma of a numerical analyst not only concerns the problem of modelling the non-linear behaviour of intact rock, but also the non- linearity contributed by structural discontinuities. In this light, it is the intention of this paper to examine some aspects of the non-homogenity and structural discontinuities of rock and incorporate this behaviour into boundary element numerical solution. Non-homogeneous material is considered piecewise, thus homogeneous and is modelled by using sub-regions. The Mohr- Coulomb failure criterion is employed to model the non-linear behaviour of the major discontinuities. A computer program is developed based on the procedure for combining the direct boundary element method and the displacement discontinuity method. A linear element type is employed in the formulation of numerical solution. The computer program is used to study the stress distribution in a gold mine.

Steven Tubbs From mine to farm is a long journey for Florida's phosphate, but it is an important one to the American farmer who uses phosphate fertilizers to replenish the soil and produce the crops which eventually wind up on the American dinner table. In this phosphate-food connection, transportation plays a vital life-giving role, a role that is unique because of the large quantities of phosphate produced and the mineral's location in relation to its markets. Florida Leads World Florida is the world's largest phosphate producer, supplying 80% of the nation's and a third of the world's annual total. About 95% of Florida's phosphate goes into agricultural chemicals, with 90% going into fertilizers. Phosphate production is primarily concentrated in west central Florida, with the exception of mining and processing in north Florida by Occidental Chemical Co. The phosphate rock is beneficiated at the mine sites and then is transported out of Florida in a raw state, or to one of the industry's 18 chemical complexes where it is processed further. In 1981, Florida produced more than 42 Mt (46 million st) of phosphate rock-a 1% decrease from 1980. The industry also produced more than 12 Mt (13 million st) of phosphate chemical products in 1981 and transported them to both domestic and foreign customers. This year, the state's phosphate production and shipments are substantially lower than recent annual levels because of a depressed worldwide phosphate market. With production down slightly in 1981, shipments declined and company inventories increased dramatically. Phosphate-related shipments through the port of Tampa alone fell 20%. As a result, in 1982, phosphate operations cut production to reduce inventories. According to the Fertilizer Institute, during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1982, phosphate rock production fell 18%; phosphate rock shipments, 28%; finished fertilizer production, 30%; finished fertilizer shipments, 25%; and phosphate rock exports declined by 20%. Despite depressed conditions, Florida phosphate production and shipments are expected to increase in the near future with more rock being processed into fertilizer products. Phosphate is one of Florida's major industries. The US Bureau of Mines estimates it contributed $3 billion to the state's economy in 1981 and an additional $1.4 billion to the US economy.
