Since 1993, Newmont has been actively growing through the development of three major foreign mining operations with a fourth under construction. The first project, Yanacocha in Peru began operating in October 1993 at a time when political and business risk in that country was considered high. In 1995, Newmont began operating the Muruntau Joint Venture in Uzbekistan, the first of its kind in the CIS. In early 1996, Newmont started operating the Minahasa mine in Indonesia. Now, in early 1997, Newmont is undertaking the construction of a $1.9 billion project in Indonesia and is completing a feasibility study with our partner for the development of a gold operation in Mexico. All of these projects have been considered "risky" by most standards, and Newmont has been very successful in all of them through risk mitigation programs including utilizing strong and successful in-country partners, concentrating on developing a strong national workforce with minimal expatriate employees, utilizing World Bank, EBRD and IFC financing and building and maintaining strong ties with host governments. This paper describes in more detail, some of the risk mitigation programs that Newmont has used to successfully grow the company through development of major foreign mining operations.

Long-term production scheduling design is a very important part of mining because it determines the economic outcome of a project There have been many attempts to solve the optimum pit scheduling problem, but there has been no success in developing a scheduling method to give optimum results in maximizing net present value of a mining project. Open pit production scheduling problem can be formulated as a mathematical programming problem and solved using Mixed Integer Programming technique. However, it is not possible to solve the formulation within a reasonable time since the number of integer variables required for the mathematical model is too great to do that by today's available computer technology. There- fore, a methodology is required to combine, or aggregate, the mining blocks and to decrease the number of integer variables in scheduling without losing the optimality. Therefore, the fundamental tree concept was developed in this paper to combine the blocks. A fundamental tree is defined as any combination of blocks such that: 1. the blocks can be profitably mined, 2. the blocks obey the slope constraints and, 3. there is no subset of the chosen blocks that meets 1 and 2. A Linear Programming (LP) formulation is developed as a mathematical model to find a set of fundamental trees that exist for a deposit. Since the blocks are combined to form the fundamental trees, the number of variables required for the scheduling model is decreased significantly. This decrease in the number of variables makes it possible to mathematically formulate the multi-time period scheduling problem as a Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) model. A case study is performed on a multi-mineral copper deposit in Peru, South America. NPVs of annual after-tax cash flows generated based on the schedule provided by the "Fundamental Tree Algorithm" is compared with NPVs resulted from the schedules coming from three of the computer packages presently available to the mining industry. These are Mintec's M821V, Earth- work's NPV Scheduler, and Whittle's Milava open pit mine schedulers.

In October 1993, the first two of a series of full scale passive biological treatment cells were constructed to treat mine drainage from the Burleigh Mine (located approximately 48 km west of Denver, Colorado in the Clear Creek/Central City Superfund Site). The two cells are each 19-21 m long, 10.7 m wide and 1.2 m deep. Each cell contains approximately 216 cubic meters of substrate (composted manure) and is designed to treat 60 L/min of mine flow. One cell is designed as an upflow reactor and the other cell is designed as a downflow reactor. The differences in flow hydraulics and treatment efficiencies will be tested in these two cell for approximately nine months before the remaining cells are built to treat all the discharge. The substrate material was selected based on a series of bench scale tests. During the tests, the amount of metals removed was determined. The design flow rate was based on a sulfide generation rate of 400 nanomoles of sulfide generated per cubic centimeter of substrate per day. Metal removal results for the first three months of operation of the two cells will be presented and compared to results of bench and pilot studies at other sites.

Historically, the treatment of orebodies for recovery of valuable constituents presents many processing challenges. In a time of heightened environmental awareness, the constraints placed on processing complex orebodies are becoming more and more pronounced. As such, established technologies are limited in their ability to fill the needs of these emerging sources of raw materials. A prime example of this is in processing PGMs from primary sources. Normally, this type of material is found in a nickel-copper-iron sulfide matrix. Typically, these materials are processed by established pyrometallurgical means. However, other options should be considered. Hydrometallurgical processes are available which offer advantages over pyrometallurgical methods. One of these is the nitrogen species catalyzed sulfuric acid pressure leach used industrially by Sunshine Mining and Refining Company. In 1990, laboratory work was undertaken in cooperation with Stillwater Mining Company to test PGM matte materials from the Columbus, Montana smelter. The initial results were very positive, and they led to a design to recover PGMs in a high grade residue and to recover nickel and copper as valuable products. Handling the iron and other wastes in an environmentally safe manner was also successfully investigated.

Precambrian granitic pegmatites on the west, south west, south and southeast slopes of Storm Mountain, Larimer County, northern Colorado, were explored and mapped geologically 1956-1959. The area between Crystal Mountain Mining District on the north and Hyatt pegmatite mine area on the south was nearly inaccessible until a company built an access road, which was completed in 1959, into Roosevelt National Forest and its jeep-type roads. The area is extremely rugged, rising from some 6,000 feet on the highway at Drake, on Big Thompson River, to an altitude of over 10,000 feet at the summit ridge of Storm Mountain. Almost innumerable pegmatites of every possible type of granitic pegmatite intrusion infest the Precambrian gneisses and schists of the southwest-tilted fault block of Storm Mountain. The major bodies stand at least 100 to 200, feet high above the surrounding forest floor. Core drilling has shown that some extend to at least 200 feet below the surface. They blunt out at the southwest, some keel out below and others are faulted out at their southwest ends. Strike length ranges from 200 to 600 feet. The massive bulky bodies have nearly vertical walls. Contents are zoned or ribboned and layered. They consist of local commercial bodies of beryl, potash feldspar, mica, uranium minerals and quartz. As yet no lithium minerals have been encountered.

An empirical correlation to detennine laboratory mill grinding time has been developed. Grinding samples to 90 ± 5# below 147 micrometers was required for a flotation testwork at Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) Research Center. The initial samples were all below 1 mm in size with different size distributions and work indices (Wi) ranging from 13 to 23 kWh/st. Grinding curves were determined for some initial samples. A correlation was developed between percent retained on 147 micrometers at a standard time and the time required to grind each sample to the required size. This correlation was then used to grind all samples, based on the preliminary grinding model. Finally, a statistical analysis with the size distribution of all samples was performed. The success of using the correlation was confirmed and an equation was determined using the data set.

This paper reviews the trends in supply and consumption of the principal magnesium compounds in the United States in relation to domestic requirements and world resources. The data are confined to these principal magnesium compounds: Magnesium chloride, magnesium hydroxide, precipitated magnesium carbonate, and magnesium oxide (commonly referred to as magnesia). The properties and uses of magnesium compounds are shown in various chapters of' the 2nd edition of Industrial Minerals end Rocks. 3/ The third edition of this reference is in preparation. A more recent description of properties, uses and sources of magnesium compounds appears in a Bureau of Mines publication.4/ The American Iron and Steel Institute and the Refractories Institute have published comprehensive data on the properties and uses of basic refractories. Many magnesium compounds are prepared by the producers to meet specifications set by individual consumers.

The efficiency of search for porphyry copper and molybdenum deposits can be greatly increased. A model exploration system is here presented to show how geologic literature data and field surveys can be aided by modern statistical and computer methods. Assuming that major ore deposits occur in clusters, it is possible to evaluate rapidly large areas at modest cost and with minimum investment risk. An example of the success of these methods is given. Clusters of mine density and metal production covering the State of Nevada were plotted and machine contoured. Selection of a 47,300 square-mile area on the Nevada-California border was made. Within this area, detailed analyses were performed, and a 3000 square-mile site was picked for subsequent field examination. To initiate efficiently the field work, 81 stream sediment geochemical samples were collected and analyzed for copper, zinc, and molybdenum. These data established local variance and necessary statistical controls. Following this, a total of 151 geochemical samples were used to survey the 3000 square-mile area. Computer contouring of results directed attention to specific target areas for detailed geologic analysis, property acquisition and drilling. A total of 22 copper-zinc and molybdenum anomalies were identified. Four of these were recommended for further exploration. To date, two have been acquired and drilled and preliminary ore reserve and financial analysis have been made on one. The estimated cost and time for the regional exploration phases leading to these targets were thirty man-weeks and $16,000.

Ground freezing has been used for the sinking of deep mine shafts for more than 140 years. While advances in refrigeration technology have refined the overall freezing operation, the basic ground freezing concept remains the same. This paper presents an overview of the ground freezing process and the unique advantages that ground freezing brings to shaft construction. Design and construction considerations, including instrumentation and monitoring, are discussed. Case studies are presented to illustrate ground freezing applications for mine shaft installation.

The search for a more effective means of coping with methane liberation has resulted in the expanded use of seam degasification. Its advantages are measured not only in reducing the hazards due to methane, but also in producing a marketable commodity: .the gas, itself. However, the success of a methane drainage system is the culmination of many complex factors, the most important being the coal seam permeability. The two most popular drainage techniques used mining today are the vertically simulated borehole method and the in-seam horizontal borehole method. The objective of this paper is to determine the permeability range in which the selection of the degasification technique is based primarily on equipment and economic analysis. A discussion of the equipment involved will be incorporated into examples evaluated by the Penn State coal methane simulation model.

5.1 INTRODUCTION There are several types of surface ground disturbances, each of which is immediately transmitted to surface structures and causes damage of various forms, depending on the location of the structures in the subsidence basin. Many criteria have also been proposed for defining the potential structural damage. All of these topics will be discussed in this chapter. 5.2 TYPES OF GROUND DAMAGES There are two types of ground damage, continuous and dis¬continuous, that could inflict damages to surface structures. Dis¬continuous ground damage is open fractures of various degrees. Four types of fractures are commonly seen (Brauner, 1973b): 1. Fissures or cracks. Cracks are the most common form of ground damage and range from completely closed to several feet wide. Surface cracks are most prominent when the ratio of mining depth to mining height is smaller than 30 to 50 times mining height. Cracks initiate parallel to, but ahead of the moving long¬wall face at some intervals when the depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 25 to 30. As the face continues to move, they open up and then close gradually, and in most cases eventually close up completely when the face moves farther away. Sometimes when the depth-to-mining height ratio is larger, cracks may initiate be¬hind the face and go through the same cycle. Cracks are also more likely to occur in the hill when the face is moving in the uphill direction. Cracks also occur at or near both sides of the panel edges. Those cracks tend to remain open permanently. When the surface is covered with grass or other vegetation, cracks of less than 1 to 2 in. wide usually do not penetrate it and become invisible on the surface. 2. Steps. A step may occur when the longwall face stops abruptly if the mining depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 20. Steps may also occur along the panel edges. Steps also range from a few inches to a few feet in width and depth. If planes of weakness are oriented favorably, ground will slide along these planes and form steps on the surface. 3. Cave-in pits. These result from local collapse of the ground from the mine level to the surface when the mining depth is less than 150 ft and occur mostly above abandoned mined lands. They may be as large as 40 ft wide and deep. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps result from ground compression and occur mostly near panel center some time after mining. Bumps of up to 4 ft, but mostly 1 to 2 ft, have been identified. Continuous ground damage refers to the formation of the sub¬sidence basin where continuous nondestructive ground deforma¬tions occur. As mentioned earlier, continuous ground deforma¬tions associated with a subsidence basin include subsidence, slope, curvature, displacement, horizontal strain, twisting, and shearing. 5.3 TYPES OF SURFACE STRUCTURAL DAMAGES Both continuous and discontinuous ground disturbance cause damage to surface structures. A. Structural Damages Due to Discontinuous Ground Disturbance 1. Fissures or cracks. Open cracks can cause dislocation of surface structure if the gaps are sufficiently large so that the struc¬tural elements cannot resist but fail. On the other hand, minor cracks affect only the appearance, and not the structural integrity. 2. Steps. When a surface structure is located on a step, some portions of the structure lose support and become overhung. In the case of a residential house, there will likely be many open frac¬tures in the overhung portions, followed in severe cases by sepa¬ration of the superstructure at the edge of the step. 3. Cave-in pits. If the caved-in pit is larger than the surface structure, the structure will drop into the pit and become unstable. If the caved-in pit is smaller than the surface structure, the struc¬ture may either become overhung or lose support in some portions. In either case, it is unsafe for use. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps will disrupt roadways or house floor. If located under supporting members of the struc¬tures, it may cause damages. B. Structural Damage Due to Continuous Ground Disturbances 1. Subsidence. Pure subsidence or uniform subsidence over an area does not cause any structural damage. However, if it becomes a topographical low area, it may be flooded with water and make the surface structures unusable. It must be noted that the flat bottom area at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin does not reach that position suddenly. Rather, as shown in Fig. 3.1, it is subjected to the dynamic surface deformation asso¬ciated with the traveling subsidence basin before it is left behind to be part of the flat-bottom area. Therefore any structure located at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin must be able to resist the dynamic surface deformation in order not to be dam¬aged. 2. Slope. Ground slope will induce tilting of the structure. Tall structures with small base areas, such as water towers, chimneys, and power transmission towers are most sensitive to ground slope. If the ground slope is such that if after tilting the center of the gravity of the tilted structure falls outside the base area, it will topple, but this seldom occurs. Ground slope will change the designed slope of a buried trans¬portation pipeline, either increasing or decreasing the original slope depending on whether the ground slope coincides with or opposes the original slope. There are maximum allowable final slopes for various types of transporting materials. Ground slope also affects highways and railways. There is a maximum allowable final slope for a railway because tractive effort increases 1/1000 of its weight for every increase of 1/1000 in grade. 3. Curvature. There are positive (convex) and negative (con¬cave) curvatures. When a surface structure is located on a positive curvature, both ends become unsupported, followed by bending upward at the midportion. The top portion is subjected to more severe stretching than the lower one. The Indian Head fine has been in existence since 1922. For over 56 years there have been North Dakota people mining coal at this same location. The area affected will fit inside a circle 5 km in diameter, and the coal is lignite. The seam thickness has varied from 2.4 m to 3.65m, and the overburden from 6 m to 30 m in depth. me Lignite coal which is being mined at the Indian Head Mine is from 15.8 x l0 6 to 16.7 x 10 6 J per kg; it has a moisture content of 33 to 38%; an ash content of 5 to 10%; and a sulfur content of from 0.5 to 0.7%. The moisture content and the fact that we crush the coal co a top size of 14 cm x 0, are two of the characteristics or the product which cause it to freeze and remain inside of the railroad cars on the slope sheets. The market for the coal initially was almost entirely local coal sales. That is, coal was sold to people in the area who used the lignite to heat their homes, stores, offices, schools, and churches. Back in the early 1920's, there were no stoker-fed boilers, or pulverized fuel boilers, as we have in today?s marketplace. Basically, all of the coal was sold as lump coal, pieces about 30 to 35 cm square, to be used in furnaces: and nut coal with a top size of about 7.5 cm to 10 cm to be used in the old kitchen cookstove. All of the coal fines, less than 5 cm, were screened out and layed onto a pile. There was no market for the smaller sizes of the lignite coal. It has been our experience that when the coal is in lumps or chunks larger than 7.5 cm to 10 cm, there is a very slight possibility of freezing. That is the chunks themselves freeze, but by their nature, they do not cling to one another or form large masses of frozen material which are difficult to remove from the slope sheers of the railroad cars.

In metallurgical applications, coal fulfills dual roles as a chemical feed stock and as a fuel source. These applications range from cokemaking, ironrnaking (including pulverized coal injection), foundry, basic oxygen furnace / electric arc furnace coal additions, direct ironrnaking, Corex, and the futuristic direct steelmaking. In all steelmaking related processes, chemical reactions are simultaneously temperature and chemical dependent. Therefore, coals used in these processes must consistently comply with specific quality parameters in order to promote efficient operations. This paper limits discussion of Metallurgical Coal Quality to cokemaking and ironmaking applications. Its purpose is to present the customer's perspective on the control of critical coal and coke properties.

Valuations can be molded, twisted and misinterpreted. Cases of spurious scope setting; limits to the information or access by the valuer; difficulties with the lack of comparative valuations; inappropriate valuation methods and outright speculations are described. None should be accepted by an experienced, independent minerals valuer. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (TheAusIMM) is working on a Valmin Code for which a Manual of Best Practice and Valuation Guidelines may be developed.

Pyrometallurgical process are usually used to recover valuable metals from metal sulphide concentrates. However, their use is diminishing as the cost of energy rises and pollution controls become strictes. An alternative method of treatment sulphides could be bacterial leaching due its simplicity and negligible contamination (1-2). This process is presently used commercially to re cover metals such as Cu and U from low grade ore concentrates. In spite of numerous researchs during recent years (3-5) there exists very little kinetic data concerning the speed of bioleaching process. The kinetic analysis of bacterial activity is related with the metabolism and growth of microox ganisms . This fundamental information permits ma- king the best utilization of bacterial oxidation and to suggest techniques which might increase the production of the products desired. However, bio- kinetic models are especially complicated due to the existence of many metabolic routes and parallel reactions which are important for the life of the bacteria. Microbiological oxidation of a mineral substrate is influenced by its own inicial concentration: This influence can be determined by means of a kinetic study. In a medium with sufficient concentration of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) and an adequate supply of 0, and CO2, as the only & L source of carbon for the biochemical synthesis, the substrate concentration would remain the only limitation in the rate of leaching. In this case the Michaelis-Menten model could be applied (6). The model is based on an association of the enzyme (El with the substrate (S) with consequent decomposition of the latter into enzyme and products [ ] The rate of dissolution is defined by the equation : [ ] Were V is the rate of metal extraction (mg 1-1 1 h-1 ) ; S is the pulp density Mn is the maximum rate for metal extraction (mg 1-1 h-1) and K is the constant of Michaelis (concentration of substrate that yields Vm/2). This method is applicable only when the rate of bacterial growth is similar to the rate of metal extraction. It would therefore be sufficient to control the concentration of metal in the medium over the period of time. In the present work a systematic study of the kinetics of ZnS and CuFeS bioleaching in sphalerite and complex ore concengrates was carried out. The rate of dissolution of the Zn and Cu as function of the pulp density and temperature was determined. However, most oxidations of sulphide dissolution take place with a very slow kinetic; but, this can be accelerated considerably by the addition to the solution of suitable catalytic ions, as was Suggested many years ago by Bjorling (7). Such ions can exercise an important influence on the rate of the oxidation-reduction reactions, both homogenous and heterogenous, which take place during the leaching of sulphides; they also affect the nature of the reaction products. The action of catalytic ions has been fully developed in aqueous systems, but in the absence of bacteria (8 - 11) although the actual machanisms is not totally known. The mechanisms proposed as hypotheses in the literature (8) indicate that, in the case of ZnS, the catalyst ion act through an electrochemical mechanism according to the reactions: [ ]

Peat has unique physical, chemical, and biological properties. These include high porosity and water retention, high absorption and adsorption properties, high buffering capacity, and it is a rich medium for microorganism activity. Peat has traditionally been used for horticultural purposes. However, in recent years, peat is increasingly being used for waste treatment purposes. This paper reviews North American literature on the use of peat for waste treatment applications. The literature indicates promising use of peat in treating municipal and on-site effluent, removal of low concentrations of heavy metals from wastewaters, and adsorption of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon pollutants.

The potential production of cobalt from nickel sulfide deposits in Canada, from nickel laterite deposits in the Pacific Islands, and from the copper deposits of Zaire and Zambia will be a function of the cost of recovery of the primary nickel and copper products. This cost of production varies significantly for these deposits and is related to the differences in the cost of labor, energy, and supplies, to production technology, and to the grade and recovery of nickel, copper, and cobalt. This Bureau of Mines paper investigates these cost and technology differences as they relate to the cost competitiveness of the deposits in Canada, Zambia, Zaire, and the Pacific Islands.

Extrapolation of the rock properties obtained from the cores exploration holes to the surrounding areas often causes problems because of frequent sudden changes in the geologic composition of strata. To address this problem, the author has been developing a method of rapid strength testing "in situ," with application of a borehole penetrometer. This method, as opposed to conventional laboratory testing, does not require rock samples to be retrieved and handled/machined before testing. The results are generated by strength determination on the wall of a drill hole at a site. The newest development is a borehole penetrometer that requires only a 1.38.mm (1.5 in) diameter hole. The small diameter of the penetrometer body allows for drilling test holes with production mine equipment such as roof bolters. It opens the possibility of broad application in coal mines, as well as in hard rock mines and tunneling. The principles of the apparatus are described and are illustrated with examples of its applications.

The development of techniques for separating minerals based on differences in their specific gravities is reviewed and their present applications in process technology outlined. Special emphasis is placed on the development, in Australia, of new models of the spiral concentrator. The mechanics of separation of spiral separators are stated, including the effects of operating parameters, Some of the traditional areas of spiral application are described, together with examples of new applications such as treatment of fine alluvials and tailings, separation of liberated minerals at coarse sizes and fine coal recovery.

"INTRODUCTION Shield tunnelling is often used in constructing underground infrastructure in cities due to the ability to limit settlements and damage to existing buildings. However, in an urban environment with soft overburden and buildings on pile foundations such as the North-South Line project in Amsterdam, there is a tendency to design the tunnel well below the surface and below the pile tip level in order to reduce interaction between tunnelling process and piles. This results in deep tunnels and deep station boxes. When the tunnels are located close to the surface and above the pile tip level, this would reduce the required depth of the station boxes and the construction cost. Moreover, other benefits of shallow tunnels are the low operational cost in the long-term and shorter traveling time from the surface to the platforms. Still, the tunnels should be constructed in such a manner that existing buildings are not structurally damaged, which results in a minimum required distance between tunnelling process and existing buildings. In this paper, the extent of the area that is influenced by tunnelling will be investigated in order to determine the limit distance from tunnelling to existing foundations without inducing too large building deformation. From analysing empirical data of many shield tunnels, Peck (1969) firstly presented the settlement trough on the surface induced by tunnelling in soft soil as a Gaussian distribution. This is also confirmed by other authors (Cording and Hansmire, 1975; Mair et al., 1993; Ahmed and Iskander, 2010). In this study, the Gaussian curve is used to investigate the ground movement when tunnelling in order to find the effects on existing structures. Based on the results from centrifuge test and empirical data, Mair et al. (1993) showed that the subsurface settlement profile distributes as the Gaussian curve also. The width of settlement trough at the depth z depends on the depth of the tunnel z0 and a coefficient K depending on depth. Other studies by Moh et al. (1996), Grant and Taylor (2000) and Jacobsz (2003) based on Mair et al. (1993) proposed a limited change of K in various kinds of soil."
