Hauling equipment can be loaded more quickly. The productivity or usefulness of a Front End Loader is proportional to its working speed, both automotive and hydraulic. The price of speed is horsepower, which rises rapidly with speed. Horsepower saved shows up as increased productivity. This paper covers the development of the D600, KW-Dart's articulated loader, which combines massive size with new concepts to increase its working speed. Hyperbaric filtration was evaluated at the laboratory scale for dewatering fine coal cleaned by froth flotation. A laboratory pressure filtration procedure is described to obtain uniform cake structure from dilute slurries containing a significant amount of coarse material. Baseline tests were conducted varying filter operating parameters such as driving force, time, cake thickness, percent solids, viscosity and pH to determine optimum operating conditions for eventual application on a continuous pilot scale hyperbaric filter.

The mining industry is one of the three pillars of the Namibian economic development, besides tourism and the fishing industry. Generating 20 % of the GDP and more than 50 % of the export income, half of this amount derives from the diamond mining industry. In 2008, the annual production of 2.2 mio carat achieved an income higher than 1.44 billion Namibian Dollars (more than 750 mio Euro). After the global recession in early 2009, which also caused a significant downcrease in production to only 0.93 mio Carat, the diamond mining industry easily restored itself and the production figures for 2010 are expected to be even higher than those achieved in 2008. Compared to other diamond producing countries, Namibia is mainly producing diamonds of highest quality (jewellery quality), with less than 10 % of the mined diamonds not falling into this category. This high quality stands also for the worldwide highest prize achieved per carat. With 370 $US per carat it is more than four times higher than that of the average South African stone. In 1908 the finding of the first diamonds in the Namib desert close to the coastal town of Lüderitz was reported by a Mr Stauch, railway inspector for the then German colonial railway company. This event immediately triggered a Diamond Rush and subsequently the set-up of the restricted diamond mining area ?Sperrgebiet? through the German colonial administration. In 1913, only five years after the first mining operations had started, the steadily increasing production allowed for more than 20 % of the diamond production worldwide. After the First World War, the new South African government concentrated all mining activities in one organization, CDM (Consolidated Diamond Mines of South West Africa) which in following decades conducted an extensive and detailed exploration of the whole Sperrgebiet and started numerous new diamond mining operations.

The continuous operation of decanters in the mining industry relies heavily on the use of synthetic flocculants. Today, as plants seek to lower production costs by increasing throughput it is necessary to obtain optimum performance from the flocculant. Factors affecting such optimization include charge and molecular weight selection, and efficiency of mixing the highly viscous polymer solution with the feed slurry. Beyond maximizing dilution of the solution, the last factor is often ignored. This paper describes a series of calculations, based on fundamental transport theories, that have been used to describe flow conditions within decanter feed wells and to help select flocculant addition points. Examples are shown for the case of hydroxamated polyacrylamide flocculants in the Bayer Process, where proper selection of the addition points can result in lower flocculant dosage and better control of the decanters.

The industrial grinding process has undergone changes to better address the market and economic needs. Fine grinding of dry materials has developed to the point where classifying linings and fine ball charges improve mill efficiencies. Roller mills as well have wide acceptance due to their power efficiencies. The mill, by its nature, cannot provide the specific particle size or range of sizes which are required for further processing or final use. Therefore, various separators are operated in conjunction with the mill to control particle size. The sizing device helps minimize over grinding and control top size. Rising energy costs combined with increasingly tighter quality specifications have led to increasing study of the grinding and separation process.

Before specifications are discussed it may be well to define the term "Mineral Aggregates." Professor K. B. Woods (1) defined "Mineral Aggregate--An aggregation of sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag, or other material of mineral composition used in combination with a binding medium to form bituminous and portland cement concrete, macadam, mastic, mortar, plaster, etc., or alone as in railroad ballast, filter beds, and various manufacturing processes, such as fluxing, etc. " This definition is too all inclusive for the purposes of this paper; therefore, this discussion will be confined to specifications for natural aggregates which means sand and gravel and crushed stone, and limited primarily to coarse aggregate which is aggregate larger than one-quarter inch in size. To the uninitiated, this may seem to be a very limited subject on an unimportant material. However, aggregates are essential in all types of construction. The tonnage and value of these two aggregates produced in the United States during 1959 as reported by the Bureau of Mines were as follows: Sand and Gravel 729,895,000 tons valued at $728,527,000 Crushed stone 581,721,000 tons valued at $824,411,000

Xanthates and dithiophosphates are the most commonly used collectors in the flotation of sulfide minerals. Other reagents such as thionocarbamates, mercaptobenzothiazoles (MBT), mercaptans and xanthogen formates occupy niche positions in industrial collector use. Over the last ten years there has been much activity by chemical companies to develop new collector compositions. The new collectors are aimed at meeting specific process needs such as recovering an increment of valuable metals, improved sulfide separations, increased flotation kinetics, and reducing reagents costs. A review of the patent literature shows that American Cyanamid (Cytec), Dow Chemical, Phillips Petroleum, Sentrachem Ltd., Henkel, Montan Chemicals and Elf Aquitaine, among others, have been active in sulfide collector research. Several companies have achieved considerable success in laboratory and plant tests of the new collectors; however, commercial acceptance for plant usage has been slow. Those most advanced have been plant tested extensively and some are in day-to-day use. The new collector types in this category are: Modified thionocarbamates, dithiophosphinates, organic sulfides, trithiocarbonates, monothiophosphates, and modified thioureas. Others such as substituted mercaptobenzothiazoles and monothiophosphinates have been tested in the laboratory. The chemistry of collectors developed in the last 10 years, their preparation, physical properties and their potential for commercial use are reviewed in this paper.

Perlite is a naturally occurring siliceous rock, which can be expanded from four to twenty times its original volume when heated at a temperature close to its softening point. The expanded perlite is characterized by increased sound and thermal insulating properties. However, the conventionally expanded perlite products have high porosity and low mechanical properties that limit the range of their applications in the construction and chemical industry. The present work aims at the development of new closed porous microcellular material from perlite with enhanced mechanical and physical properties to be applied in new applications, like joint compounds, functional fillers for special paint types, special blasters and mortars, artificial marble. For the production of these new materials a vertical electrically heated furnace with six different heating zones and controlled gradient temperature profile was used. The effect of major process parameters, like temperature and air flow, on the quality of the produced materials was studied using Greek perlite from Milos Island. The quality of the new products was evaluated in terms of their bulk density, compression strength, water and oil absorption, surface area and pore volume. The experimental results show that the produced materials are characterised by improved mechanical and physical properties compared to the conventionally expanded perlite products.

"This paper takes an in-depth look at the $72 million design-build Norris Cut project, which includes the replacement of an existing 54-inch waste water sewer main to Fisher Island under the Norris Cut Channel. Tunneling through one of the country’s most unpredictable geologies created unique challenges in both the design and construction phases of the project. The paper presents the geotechnical and structural design considerations for the 100-foot deep secant piled TBM launch shaft in the highly permeable Fort Thompson formation limestone and sands. The structural design effort also included the design of the tremie slab, thrust wall and design of the largely unreinforced launch shaft to resist asymmetric loading from partial ground freezing. The retrieval shaft was designed as a deep soil mixed shaft and is thought to be the deepest soil-mixed shaft in Miami. From a construction perspective, this paper discusses the unique challenges of building two shafts with two different techniques and will compare some of the constructability aspects, costs and equipment schedule-considerations related to the use of two separate techniques. INTRODUCTION Nicholson Construction Company (NCC) was awarded a $72.1 million Design-Build contract to replace an existing force main from the Virginia Key Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant (CDWWTP) under the Norris Cut Channel to Fisher Island. The location of the project is shown in Figure 1. The project involves replacing an existing 54-inch diameter pre-stressed concrete sewer force main with a 60-inch diameter fiberglass force main. Arup USA, Inc. (Arup) is the lead designer for Nicholson on this design-build project. Arup is providing design services for the TBM launch and retrieval shafts, segmental tunnel lining, the fiberglass pipe, and the horizontal directional drill component. Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department currently owns and operates the existing 54-inch sanitary force main that transmits sewage collected from Miami Beach and Fisher Island to the CDWWTP for treatment and disposal. The existing force main was subject to a condition assessment in December 2011 which revealed structural deficiencies in the pre-stressed concrete pipeline."

Although production generally satisfies demand for rare earths, new markets may make undeveloped resources, particularly those rich in yttrium, more interesting. A Precambrian carbonalite orebody at Mountain Pass, California, has been the world's largest rare earth producer. Minor rare earth production comes from titanium placer mining in Florida and uranium mining in Canada. Prior to operations at Mountain Pass, North American production was mostly from placer deposits that constitute large, low-grade rare earth resources. Newly discovered North American rare metal resources in peralkaline igneous rocks are potential yttrium producers. Most of these resources are in a continent-wide belt of anorogenic magmatic rocks approximately coeval with mineralization at Mountain Pass. Other untapped rare each resources in North America are generally light rare earth-dominated and small or of low grade.

The effects of additives, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium oleate, oleic acid and polyacrylic acid, on stirred media milling of limestone have been investigated. The results are evaluated in terms of specific surface area, specific energy and energy efficiency as a function of additive dosage, polymer molecular weight, solids concentration and relevant operating variables. Use of additives generally results in changes in specific surface area and energy efficiency, while under certain conditions a more than 100% increase in these parameters can occur. Relevant interfacial properties have been measured and milling mechanisms involved are explored particularly in terms of the effect of additives on the flow patterns at higher solids concentration.

Wastewater sludge is a problem for environmental control and it is necessary alternative researches for its reuse. Industries can research the association of clay and sewage sludge as a source of ceramic mass. This procedure can contribute for the industry sustainability including in its raw materials, wastes of environmental concern. This paper presents the results of sewage sludge and clays characterization being analyzed particle size distribution (sedimentation), mineralogical (X-ray diffraction), chemical composition (X-ray fluorescence), thermal analysis, density, and Atterberg proprieties (liquid and plastic limit; plasticity index) and also their applications in ceramics. Results were used to determine moisture for mass of raw material and sewage sludge and there were realized tests of fired in kiln at temperatures used in ceramic industry for bricks production. In the test pieces were analyzed the properties for application as bricks.

The Muck Valley Hydroelectric Project in Northeastern California required construction of a 3.65 meter tunnel through 6,623 meters of mixed volcanic flow deposits within a critical time frame. As Engineer and Construction Manager for the Project, Morrison-Knudsen Engineers invited bids for both Drill and Blast as well as Tunnel Boring Machine methods, selecting a contractor proposing a TBM designed and built specifically for this project which could excavate a wide variety of materials and maintain acceptable progress rates to complete the work within schedule. Tunnel lining as required included shotcrete with metal fibers and full circle concrete.

Liquid ion exchange is becoming more and more important in hydro-metallurgical processing and recovery of metals. The key to success for this process are reagents which have suitable operating characteristics. One of these important characteristics is a relatively fast phase separation rate in the extraction and stripping circuits, as this greatly affects the size of plant required. A test for measuring phase separation rate is needed to help evaluate liquid ion exchange reagents. Such "a test also would be useful for evaluating carrier solvents that are used for diluting the re-agents. In fact, one standard test method would be very desirable as it would provide a common basis for comparing reagents and sol-vents. The phase separation test described in this paper has been used successfully for several years with the copper reagent, LIX®64N. The test is set up for feed liquors containing low copper concentrations. For other types of systems, modifications in procedure probably would be necessary. However, this test and the associated apparatus could be the basis for a standard phase separation test.

The concept of subsystem characteristic curves for multiple-fan ventilation networks is presented through the construction of characteristic curves for two-fan, series-parallel networks. By considering fans as the individual network branches, the multiple-fan network is viewed as consisting of two components: any one fan branch, which is called the reference fan branch, and its associated subsystem. Thus, F subsystems can be designated for the network with F fan branches. Each subsystem contains one or more fan branches. The subsystem characteristic curve is the pressure-vs.-quantity curve of the subsystem. As illustrated in the example networks, the subsystem characteristic curve is not a strictly increasing curve and does not pass through the origin. The intersection of the characteristic curves for the subsystem and the reference fan branch represents an operating point. Multiple intersections therefore represent multiple operating points.

Subsurface strata movements and deformations associated with underground longwall mining activities could cause certain influences to subsurface structures and water bodies. Methods have been developed for the prediction of final and dynamic subsurface movements and deformations induced by underground longwall mining operations in the eastern coal fields. Two new types of strata deformation, vertical and total strains, which could be useful in the field of subsidence research in assessing subsidence influences to the subsurface structures and water bodies, have been introduced. Using the subsurface subsidence prediction model, three types of subsidence influences to surface and subsurface hydrological systems have been identified. Attempts have been made to quantify the two types of subsidence influences that could cause water loss and could lower water levels in aquifers.

Kaolin is mined from extensive sedimentary formations in the eastern Amazon River Basin of Brazil. Production began about 25 years ago from 30 meter thick beds of ultra-fine particle clay of superior viscosity along the Jari River north of the Amazon. Operated by CADAM S.A., capacity now exceeds 750,000 tonnes per year ot high glossing paper coating kaolin product. South of the Amazon on the Capim River are two new operations: Para Pigmentos S.A. and Rio Capim Caulim S.A. The purity , and large coarse plate-shaped particles of these Capim kaolins support production of superior brightness and whiteness paper coating and filling grades. Annual capacities are reported to be 150,000 to 300,000 tonnes each, with expansions planned. Most of Amazon area kaolin production is shipped to western European, Asian, and North American markets.

The mineral industry and individual processing plants are large consumers of energy. While energy conservation has received some attention in the present Federal Administration National Energy Strategy proposal it is obvious that the mineral industry should also continue to emphasize energy consumption reduction for important economic savings alone. As indicated by other studies, comminution is the largest single consumer of energy in the mineral processing plant (1.3% of total electrical energy consumption in the U.S.A.).1 Fine grinding is the largest portion of this amazing statistic. While substantial energy savings have been demonstrated by new machine developments and improved control methods, undoubtedly there are additional areas in comminution where substantial progress can be made. Some time ago, the U.S. Department of Energy published a report on "Comminution and Energy Consumption" by a committee composed of experts in the field of comminution from industry and academia. They identified the following potential for energy savings by specific areas? Classification device design 9-13% Comminution device design 3-16% Control 9% Grinding additive 3-6% Materials 3% It is apparent that the classification device had the first or second highest savings potential. Obviously, serious research consideration must be given to this technology area. A series of three papers have previously been written on the subject of two stage classification research work for ball mill operation by the authors. Accordingly, a brief review will be made. Previous Research Results on Two Stage Classification The hydrocyclone was selected as the type of classification equipment for this study as it represents by far the majority of the devices used in ball milling. While four different hydrocyclone circuits have been proposed by others,3 only two were considered in this work as illustrated in Figure 1. "The waters of Lake Superior flow into those of Lake Huron through the St. Mary's river. The rapids in this river are about half a mile wide and three-quarters of a mile long, in which distance the fall amounts to about twenty feet. Since this was the only obstacle to navigation between the west end of Lake Superior and ports on any of the other Great Lakes except Ontario, attempts were made many years ago to permit the passage of small boats from Lake Huron to Lake Superior by means of canals and locks. The first canal was built on the Canadian side of the river by the Northwest Fur Company in 1797-98. The lock was 38 feet long, 8 feet 9 inches wide and had a lift of 9 feet. A tow path was made along the shores for oxen to track the bateaux and canoes through the upper part of the rapids., The lock was destroyed during the war of 1812 by United States troops from Mackinac Island.The first ship canal, known as the State Canal, was built on the American side of the river in 1853-55, about 750,000 acres of land in Michigan having been granted by congress to a private company as a 'concession for its construction. This canal was more than a mile long, 65 feet wide at the bottom and 100 feet wide at the water's surface. It had two locks, each 350 feet long by 70 feet wide, with a lift of about 9 feet. The depth of water in the canal was about 13 feet and in the locks about 11 1/2 feet."
