Lithium raw materials usable with present technology consist of pegmatite ore and surficial evaporite brine. Those advantageously located now supply world markets. Materials of similar grades and magnitude, but less favorably located, will come into production as present sources are depleted and markets expand. Some of these potential supplies have been explored, and are reserves in the sense of known availability and quality. Reserves herein are of two classes, those proved by close drilling and assaying, and those of only probable status because their scale and grade are unsystematically indicated. Possible resources include similar materials whose bulk can only be inferred on indirect evidence. All figures apply to total materials in the ground. No allowance is made for losses in mining, evaporation, beneficiation, or chemical processing.

Conventional and advanced coal preparation technologies were investigated through both a literature search and through direct contact with investigators and developers. In addition to a brief description of each process, performance characteristics including feedstock type, ash and sulfur reduction, thermal energy recovery and cost are provided in a tabular form. Seven of the most commonly utilized conventional coal preparation processes, including those respectively accepting coarse, intermediate and fine coal feed, were reviewed. It was found that certain properly implemented and well maintained conventional processes were capable of better than 75 percent ash removal while recovering 90 percent or more of the inherent thermal energy. Almost 50 advanced coal preparation processes were investigated based on biological, chemical and physical principles. Physical processes investigated included cycloning, homogeneous heavy media, electrostatic, high gradient magnetic, flotation and selective coalescence. Using pulverized coal as a feedstock, some of these processes are respectively reported to be capable of removing better than 95 percent ash. 95 percent pyritic sulfur, and 50 percent organic sulfur while incurring energy losses of less than 5 percent.

The industrial mineral filler plant of the Gouverneur Tale Company is equipped with a good dust collection system installed long before the recent popularization of environmental pollution. Credit for this fact is due to the foresight of Mr. R. S. McClellan, Project Manager and subsequent Vice President and General Manager of Gouverneur Talc, who recently retired as Vice President Engineering of the parent organization, the R. T. Vanderbilt Company. Also instrumental in the early stages of plant operation and the solution of start-up problems was J. A. Gustin who is now an engineering consultant located in Martinsville, Va. Credit is most certainly due to the late R. T. Vanderbilt, the company's founder, who favored and approved the investment in the necessary facilities that were far ahead of all competitors in the industry at that time.

"INTRODUCTIONThe idea of building a summit tunnel under the Brenner occurred to the Italian engineer Giovanni Qualizza as far back as 1847. But it was to be another 160 years to pass before a base tunnel was to be built.In 1971 the idea of a tunnel at the Brenner was dusted off again. The UIC, the International Union of Railways, commissioned a study for a new Brenner railway with a base tunnel. By 1989 three feasibility studies had been drawn up which formed the basis for further planning of the Brenner Base Tunnel.This was the start of the planning activities. In 1994, the European Union included the Berlin-Naples corridor in the list of priority projects. Ten years later, Austria and Italy signed a State Treaty to build the Brenner Base Tunnel. In that same year, what is today the BBT SE was established.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) with a length of 55 km is the centrepiece of the Helsinki-Valletta Transeuropean Traffic Corridor from Finland to Southern Italy. The BBT tunnel system connects in the north with the Innsbruck station (Austria) as well as to the feeder routes in the Lower Inn Valley, and opens to the south with the projected new line in the direction of Verona (Italy). The tangible design efforts have been underway since 1999; the start of construction of the first section was in the year 2007. The project is financed by the Italian and Austrian governments (each 30 %), as well as by the European Union (40 %).From 2027 onwards the Brenner base tunnel, including the existing lines connected with it, will carry a daily average of 330 trains (approx. 80% cargo trains and 20% passenger trains)."

Research investigations on the chemistry of the adsorption of gold cyanide on activated carbon have mostly reduced the role of activated carbon as the provider of the large surface area needed for adsorption. Most do not go beyond suggesting that oxygen functional groups on carbon play a key role in the adsorption process. Our research shows that the nature of the material, specifically its structure, is a crucial factor in the adsorption equation. To delineate the effect of adsorbent properties, gold cyanide was adsorbed on a series of carbonaceous adsorbents, including lignite, coals, anthracites, carbon blacks, graphite and activated carbon, which covers wide variations of composition, surface acid group content, and degree of graphitization. The results show that the adsorption of gold cyanide per unit area of adsorbent is not related to the amount of oxygen groups on the surface or even the total oxygen content of the material. However, they show very strong correlation with the degree of graphitization of the adsorbent, which indicates that the graphitic plates of activated carbon play the most important role. The findings suggest that majority of the adsorption occurs on the plate faces of the graphite crystallites of activated carbon.

Development of a permanent human base on the moon for exploration requires a self-sustaining system. Such a system entails the production and processing of limited amounts of raw material on the moon. Any mining and construction activities on the moon can only be performed by a robust excavation machine that can excavate a variety of material, from loose surface regolith to consolidated (frozen) regolith with embedded rocks in the mixture. Meanwhile, a limited amount of information on lunar regolith is available to develop and optimize a machine for lunar ground conditions. Therefore, any excavator designed for use on the lunar surface should have the ability to adapt to a wide range of operating conditions. A prototype cutterhead for the lunar excavator was built and tested at the Kennametal facility in Latrobe, PA. This paper discusses the results of initial material characterization, as well as full-scale tests of a prototype cutterhead in relevant material. A brief review of anticipated production rates under various assumed ground conditions is also presented.

Introduction The Carlin Trend is North America's premier gold producing district. It is located in northeastern Nevada's Elko and Eureka Counties along a northwest trending belt about 65 km (40 miles) long and 8 km (5 miles) wide (Thorstad, 1989; Jones, 1989). This trend is the worldwide reference site for epithermal, sedimentary rock-hosted microscopic gold deposits. At least 19 deposits have been discovered to date, varying in size from 933 kg to 1.08 kt (30,000 to 35 million contained oz) of gold (Fig. 1). Newmont Gold Co. and its parent, Newmont Mining Corp., jointly constitute the largest mineral right holders in the district. They own or control more than 1000 km' (386 sq miles) in and around the Carlin Trend and own all or part of I6out of the 19 mines and prospects identified to date. Since the initiation of Newmont's exploration activities in the Carlin Trend in 1961, 2.24 kt (72 million oz) of cumulative gold resources have been identified. Cumulative production from all mines since the start-up of Newmont's Carlin mine in 1965 to the end of 1989 was about 202 t (6.5 million oz) (Jones, 1989). The incentive of sustained high gold prices and innovation in processing technology resulted in a significant acceleration of gold output over the last few years. Newmont Gold alone produced more than 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) in 1989. That is equal to 22% of the cumulative 1965 to 1988 output, and an almost 200% increase over its 1986 output. The same incentives produced even more spectacular exploration results. In each of the last five years, net additions to reserves and resources outpaced current production by substantial margins. These facts demonstrate the spectacular past prospectiveness of the Carlin Trend and the success of focused, multi-disciplinary exploration methods that made it possible to more than offset the recent accelerated depletion of gold resources. However, is this situation sustainable? How long can the mining companies along the Carlin Trend keep on finding resources faster than they deplete them? These are some of the questions that motivated this study. The authors have not quantified the future potential for gold exploration in the Carlin Trend nor established a deposit discovery path. But strong indications were discovered that the [ ] Carlin Trend remains a relatively immature exploration district and that the potential for significant new discoveries is high. Methodology and data The approach chosen to address the above questions was simple. The authors compiled deposit size data, measured in contained ounces of gold resources, for all known deposits along the Carlin Trend (Table 1). The resource information was obtained by adding cumulative historical production (adjusted for mining losses and metallurgical recovery) to 1989 year-end published resource inventories. In a mature exploration area, where most deposits have been discovered, this distribution would be expected to approximate lognormality and would plot along a straight line on a lognormal probability scale. This result was found in previous work by Allais (1957) and recently confirmed by Cox and Singer (USGS, 1986) in regard to various types of mineral deposits in several regions of the world. It was also found to hold true for oil and gas pool size distributions (Arps and Roberts, 1958; Kaufman, 1962; McCrossan, 1969). [ ] The data used were compiled by Newmont Exploration geologists. The purpose of the study is to make inferences about the underlying geologic processes in the district and the maturity of the exploration effort. Therefore, deposits were not classified according to ownership but according to geologic occurrence as known from current information. Newmont's Post and Barrick's Goldstrike and Betze deposits, for example, are shown as a single occurrence to reflect the actual geologic setting. The cumulative frequency distribution of deposit sizes was plotted on lognormal probability paper (Fig. 2). The abscissa shows the cumulative fraction of deposits at or below a certain deposit size and the ordinate shows the deposit size in thousands of ounces of contained gold resources.

Each new period of public concern, whether rooted in things political, social, economical, or technological, brings with it new words or phrases which highlight that new interest. With people's awareness of our rapid depletion of readily available energy sources and the enormous increase in energy .costs came the new, and now often heard, terms "energy intensive", "energy sensitive", and "energy conservation". Since its birth in 1926, Fuller Company had been directly associated and involved with energy intensive products and processes. We are located in the heart of the Cement Industry. Many of our products and processes are geared to the needs of the portland cement manufacturer, and a look at the inferno within an operating cement or lime kiln will certainly convince anyone that here is an energy intensive process. Fuller Company, then, has always been energy sensitive. Process kilns, hard rock crushers, tube and roller mills, fluid bed thermal reactors, pneumatic compressors and conveyors, material coolers - all are Fuller Company products utilizing or transferring large amounts of energy. Consequently, much of our success in the marketplace depends on how wisely we design and plan for efficient use of power and for conservation of each unit of heat available.

The revolution in development of new technology and practices in the gold mining and metallurgy industry continues unabated despite the ups and downs in the gold price. Some of the new cutting edge technologies are listed in Table 1 overleaf. There is room to discuss just a few of these here, but many more are identified and described in RANDOL (1992). Cutting edge advancements in gold recuperation, can be sorted into three categories. The first category includes fundamental advances that offer major improvement with significant economic benefits. Second would include evolutionary developments that offer smaller, but nonetheless commercially valuable improvements. Finally there are those "advances" that are interesting but of trivial or question­able economic benefit to industry. It is essential to adopt a "systems approach" philosophy towards developing and applying new technology. Practical innovation often comes about as a result of having to solve a problem. Innovation for innovation sake is an ego trip. Environmental management has become an important part of the system and the environmental implications of new processes and practices in the mine and mill have to be carefully considered for potential benefits and/or liabilities.

The critical surface tension of wetting values (Ye) of realgar (AsS), talc [Mg3si401o (OH) 2]' stibnite (Sb2S3), and sulfur (S) were determined by flotation in the absence of conventional flotation collectors as 38.7, 38.0, 35.5, and 30.0 dyne/cm, respectively. The surface tensions of flotation media were arranged by methanol. Separation of binary mixtures of these minerals was performed exploiting their Ye differences-which form the basis of the "ganuna flotation process". One step flotation test showed that sulfur floats preferentially from its mixtures with realgar and stibnite at recoveries of 73.6 and 70.7 % and grades of 81.7 and 91.2 %, respectively. The separation of stibnite from realgar gave a recovery of 4.1 % and a grade of 41.2 % for stibnite, indicate that a minimal Ye difference of 3.6±0.2 dyne/cm is essential for such separation when conventional flotation reagents are not used. This paper presents data and describes the approach employed in these separations.

All mining operations using trucks have a common need to properly match the number and size of hauling units (trucks. wagons. scrapers. etc.) to a loading unit (wheel loader. hydraulic shovel/excavator, cable shovel. push tractor. etc.) to provide the best possible fleet match. Optimizing fleet match minimizes the cost per unit of material moved by that fleet. As haul conditions change (haul length. grade. or rolling resistance), there may be need to adjust the number of trucks to maintain the optimum fleet match. Fleet Production and Cost is a tool which, among other things, can be used to optimize the truck-loader match.

Efficient flotation of fine phosphate minerals from a deslimed waste phosphate stream (-74 microns) has been achieved by both bench-scale flotation and by flotation with a 2-inch air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) unit. A sample was collected from the waste phosphate slime stream at the SF Phosphate Limited Operations near Vernal, Utah, for flotation experiments at University of Utah laboratories. The collector used was a mixture of fatty acid, petroleum sulfonate and kerosene. Bench-scale flotation test results show that the minus 15-micron particles have a significant adverse effect on phosphate flotation. When the minus 15-micron material was removed by a classifying hydrocyclone, improved flotation recovery and concentrate grade were realized. A bench-scale flotation recovery of 86 % with a concentrate grade of 16% P2O5 was obtained from classified waste slime (74 x 15 microns) feed material containing 11.3% P2O5 In contrast, a 90% P2O5 recovery was achieved with a concentrate grade of 16-18% P2O5 by single-stage ASH flotation. With a second stage of ASH flotation, a concentrate containing 23% P2O5 was realized at an overall recovery of 75%. These results indicate that the industrial application of ASH flotation technology for phosphate recovery from waste slimes is promising.

In addition to coalbed thickness and basic coal quality data, coal drill cores can produce design data for coal beneficiation processes. To generate design data, a coal drill core should be reduced from its original cylindrical form to a particle size distribution and composition that represents (with the possible exception of top size) a raw coal process stream. Reducing a coal core with a crushing machine rarely accomplishes this representation. This investigation employs drop-shatter impact breakage followed by dry batch tumbling in a steel cylinder rotated about its transverse axis to characterize the core in terms of first-order and zeroth-order break- age rate constants, which are indices of the propensity of the coal to degrade during handling. To reduce composition variables and conserve difficult-to-obtain coal cores, the initial drop-shatter and dry-tumbling tests were done with synthetic cores. Then, cores from three coal beds, Illinois No. 6, Upper Freeport and Pocahontas No. 5, were tested. Comparison of a crushed drill core and a drill core prepared by drop-shatter and tumbling indicated that the size distribution and size fraction composition of the drop-shattered/tumbled core more closely resembled the plant feed.

This paper provides a brief look at a proposed short-longwall for coal, development. The proposed method is an attempt to realize the advantages of longwall mining in deposits that, historically, would only be minable by continuous mining methods. An overview of the proposed layout, development requirements, production rate, ventilation scheme and other associated features is provided. This mining method could help operators in above-drainage seams where minable areas are smaller. It may also have application in areas that are peppered with gas wells and in environmentally sensitive areas which preclude the use of conventional longwalls.

Operations and Research; from the earlier development, testing and installation of fine shear screens in the Minntac Step III concentrator to the most recent testing and operating data that has resulted in the installation of Derrick Multifeed sandwich deck screens in Minntac Steps I and II. Pilot-plant test results that were obtained at the Coleraine, Minnesota Research Laboratory are also reported and demonstrate the effects of feed rate and feed percent solids on sandwich screen performance with two sizes of Minntac fine screen feed.

The rapid and continuing expansion of computer and communication capability is giving birth to profound changes in the business environment. Some commentators hold that the basis of the world economy has already shifted from industry to information. Regardless of the overall implications of these changes, it is now clear that every company potentially has both access to and a need for much more information for decision making than was the case a few years ago. The importance of information to the mining industry has been underlined by the rash of unexpected economic and political developments and by the accompanying market volatility that have marked the past decade. It should be abundantly clear to even the smallest mine operator that the price for his output can be instantly affected by unexpected developments halfway across the world. Nevertheless, many mining companies still are much less sophisticated about information than they might be. For many, the historical feeling that information is an unnecessary luxury for a production-oriented business still seems to linger. On the other hand, the overwhelming volume of source material, uncertainty as to its accuracy, and the problems of finding relevant material when needed, presents stumbling blocks to viable systems of information management. Introduction When a company needs certain information, it has two basic alternatives. It can either research and develop the information in-house or pay for someone else to do it. Few mining companies have the in-house capability to assemble information needed for careful planning. On the other hand, companies often engage consultants to find information that is in fact easily accessible. All too often companies give up on procuring needed information because of the frustration of not being able to find it, and of not wanting to pay seemingly exorbitant sums for someone else to produce it. The result is poor planning. This article addresses two aspects of the information problem-finding the right sources and then accessing the particular information desired, especially as it pertains to nonferrous metal exploration and development issues. In the first section, major English-language sources that report on exploration and development (excluding primary sources of geological information, such as technical journals) are discussed.* In the second section, some available techniques for efficiently accessing this information are presented, focusing on the new MINESEARCH database system. Part One: The Information Following the News The most obvious way to follow exploration and mining developments from a distance is through regular mining media. Many active mining districts have local newspapers, usually published in the district's major towns, that give extensive coverage to miningrelated activities. For instance, to follow activities in Idaho's Coeur d'Alene silver district, one might subscribe to the Kellogg Wardner News and/or the Wallace Miner. Similarly, one might get the Sacramento Bee for news of current mining developments in north-central California. The American Metal Market, published in New York, is the daily newspaper that covers the metals industry as a whole, both in the US and abroad. Its coverage is weighted towards the refining, manufacturing, and consumption end of the business, but it frequently carries stories on mining activity, company dealings, and market outlooks. For news of major mining companies, the daily Wall Street Journal provides occasional coverage of North American companies, while the Financial Times of London serves as probably the best single source for worldwide company information. International Coverage There are three metals industry weeklies that have broad international coverage and readership. These are Metal Week, Metal Bulletin, and Mining Journal. Each has its strengths. Metals Week, a McGraw-Hill newsletter, focuses primarily on news of the metals markets, concentrating on those developments that are seen to most directly affect the price of nonferrous metals. This paper considers simulation of truck dispatching system designs using maximum expected production of the truck-shovel system as the measure of performance. Two methods are utilized, multiple comparisons with the best (MCB) and the combination of MCB and the variance reduction technique known as common random numbers (CRN). These two techniques are compared via simulation experiments. The results show that the combined procedure of MCB with CRN is the superior tool to reduce the total number of replications needed to ensure the specified probability of correct selection over the finite number of designing systems. In this case study, MCB with CRN reduces the variance by 29% and the number of required replications by 48%. Also, the MCB with CRN procedure narrowed the confidence interval by 18%.

Work on the design of Kelex 100 was initiated several years ago at the Research Laboratories of Ashland Chemical Company. The effort was specifically directed toward the synthesis of an organic molecule which would strongly and selectively chelate copper ions in acidic solutions and form an oil soluble complex which would be stable in contact with an aqueous phase having a pH of approximately one. This publication describes efforts to establish data which could be used to estimate the economic utility of the new reagent. For helping to accomplish these ends, the author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of Mr. A. V. Until the suspension of conventional operations in 1996, the White Pine Mine was the second-largest active underground copper mine in the United States, underlying an area of approximately 30 km2 (13 sq. miles) in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The mine operator intends to initiate in-stope solution copper mining by circulating a solution (lixiviant) of mine water, sulfuric acid and ferric iron through rubblized ore. As planned, the solution would be retired in the mined-out stopes following completion of the solution-mining activities. Investigations into the fate of the retired solution indicated that the solution, through time, would change from an acidic, metal-rich solution to a near-neutral, reducing solution containing much lower concentrations of metals. Investigations included reaction-path modeling (EQ3/6) and laboratory and in-mine tests. The combination of neutralization and reduction will result in precipitation of most metals, primarily as metallic sulfates, chlorides and sulfides.

The current financial state of the mineral industry, in general, is bad. Economic prospects for improvements in the near future are uncertain. What will improve mineral investment economics so the mining industry can return to a more normal (in terms of past experience) production level? Basically, mineral commodity prices must rise. They must rise to economically justify reopening closed mines and for management to seriously consider expansion or development of existing and new mines. With the worldwide economy depressed for more than a year now (longer for most segments of the mineral industry), supply/demand relationships for mineral commodities are such that prices are depressed-except for precious metals. In investment analysis of the economic potential of existing or new investments in any industry, product price generally is one of the key parameters having great impact on the economic viability of projects. Petroleum and synfuels industry development contracted last year for the same product price reasons that have brought mineral industry development to a standstill. Much of the new mine development activity now underway or in the serious planning stages around the world involves precious metals ore body development simply because precious metal prices are high enough now or are projected to be high enough in future production years to give overall satisfactory project economics. It will take significant improvement in nonprecious metal mineral commodity prices in 1983 to develop significant new mine investment interest except in very high grade ore body special situations. Mineral Investment Decision Making Before progressing further with the discussion of mineral investment considerations for the coming year, it should be emphasized that mineral investment decision making-like all industry or individual investment decision making does not relate just to economic considerations. Investment decision making should and generally does involve three analyses: • Economic analysis • Financial analysis • Intangible analysis Economic analysis evaluates the relative economic merits of investment situations from a profitability viewpoint based on discounted cash flow analysis of projected investment revenues and costs. Financial analysis, on the other hand, refers to where and how the funds for proposed investments will be obtained. Regardless of the project's economic potential, if you can't finance it, the project will not be done. Intangible analysis considers factors affecting investments but which cannot be quantified easily in economic terms. Typical intangible factors are legal considerations, public opinion, goodwill, environmental and ecological impacts, and regulatory or political considerations, to name a few. New mine development investment decision making in the US has been impacted heavily by intangible considerations in the past decade and will probably continue to be impacted by them in 1983. There is a common tendency in literature and management practice to interchange the terms economic analysis and financial analysis. This often leads to confusion about the rationale for investment decisions. For example, in the past year a majority of companies in all types of industries cut back budgets for new projects. Often this was done not because new project economics were unsatisfactory, but because cash flow from existing operations was reduced compared to previous years due to the recession, and debt service requirements were high from existing loans so new borrowing was undesirable. For financial reasons, in other words, many projects were shelved last year. That included some precious metal mining projects and many petroleum projects. Many other projects were shelved for economic reasons (sometimes combined with financial reasons in the case of marginal economic projects). New mine development for copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, iron ore, and synthetic fuels are a few examples. Economic Uncertainty and Financial Considerations Mineral project analysis has always involved a lot of uncertainty with respect to determining ore grades, tonnage of producible reserves, operating and capital cost projects, and mineral commodity prices estimates. The wide swings in mineral commodity prices in recent years and the almost impossible task of projecting future prices with any degree of confidence or accuracy concerns mineral project investment decision makers. In developing a new copper or silver mine, it is not today's price of copper or silver that is relevant to economic analysis of the mine, but what the price will be during the producing years. There is no way to avoid projecting the escalation (or de-escalation) effects on revenues and costs. To analyze a project in terms of today's dollar revenues and costs implicitly assumes that escalation will not change today's project costs and revenues; or that, if they do change, the project economics will be unaffected by the changes.
