In the course of the grinding experiments conducted at Climax over the past twenty years one interesting phenomenon was discovered. This was that balls made of certain types of steel grind more ore than some others. The most significant variation was found in the results secured with a hard alloyed forged bail compared with the forged carbon ball supplied by most ball manufacturers These findings were confirmed in many repeated controlled tests. The value of these tests depends on the methods used, the facilities available and the care with which the investigations were conducted. These are described in the following. This testing has largely been done in eight 91 x 81 low discharge ball mills in closed circuit with 7811 duplex screw classifiers. The mills run at 20 RPM on a feed approximately minus 3/8 inch. The ore is ground through 28 - 35 mesh in one stage. Each mill and auxiliary classifier is in a separate, parallel grinding and flotation section The, ore to each: section is the same in every particular and is fed to each mill bin from a common conveyor tripper. The ore from the bin to the ball mill is weighed on a conveyor scale. The power input to each mill motor is determined with a watt hour meter which measures the power to the mill motor only. Both the scales and meters are checked periodically by standard methods and have been found to give consistent readings. Automatic samplers are employed on each section to obtain accurate measurement of the size reduction. A size analysis of the classifier overflow is made each shift and a composite size analysis is obtained from a weighted average of the various shift analyses. The mills are driven by 450 horsepower synchronous motors so that there is no speed variation and shell liner age is kept as nearly the same as possible in mills under test. The same set of operators is assigned to a mill under test as to the control mill. In all other particulars such as ball load, mill density, liner design, etc., the mills are operated in precisely the same manner. This is an ideal arrangement for plant testing. From observations of ball mill performance over the past twenty years, it is the opinion of the operating staff that variations of as little as one to two percent in mill capacities may be determined if sufficient operating hours are devoted, to a test. Relations between mill capacities, fineness of grinds and power consumptions have been established with a high degree of accuracy. In Table I are given the figures for one test. These show that while the grind with the hard ball was slightly coarser, the tons ground per hour was 5.4 percent greater with the soft ball, and 6.1 percent greater on the basis of minus 100 mesh produced. The power consumed per ton with the hard ball was 4.4 percent greater on a tons per hour basis. The soft ball was inferior in wearing qualities and steel consumption per ton of ore was 24 percent greater with it. In this test the mills were charged with the two different balls for a period of three months to allow the ball loads to come to equilibrium. In Table II are given the specifications of the two balls. The difference in grinding rates may be accounted for by the nature of the ball surfaces. The surfaces of the soft balls after being worn a while are rougher to the touch. Enlarged photographs of the worn-in surfaces of hard and soft balls are shown in Figure I. These show the presence of scratches or skid marks on the hard ball surface which indicates less nipping effect. The Climax ore pulp has a pH of 6.0 and is in a dispersed state. The viscosity is low compared with most ores especially those that are conditioned with lime. This would lower the tendency of the pulp to adhere to the balls with a lower grinding efficiency as a result. It was also thought that the relative rates of wear from surface to center might affect the make-up of an equilibrium ball charge. This probably has little effect on capacity as shown by the size analyses of the two ball charges in Table III. This hypothesis was subsequently investigated by the use of rationed charges. The graphite industry as a whole has gone through many changes over the years. Most of the graphite used in major applications since the turn of the century were basic natural or electrode by-product synthetic materials, processed using simple crushing, screening, or grinding techniques. In the mid 1970's new thermal technology was developed which changed the face of the .graphite industry, and opened up a panacea of new products and capabilities. Materials produced through this new technology have helped revolutionize new products and processes in industries including automotive, batteries, fuel cells, electronics, iron, lubricants and steel. This paper outlines the continued improvements in those industries as well as the as well as the outlook for new technology in this rapidly changing area.

For centuries small amounts of copper have been recovered from acid mine-drainage waters. In recent years, the expansion of copper-bearing waste dump leaching for copper recovery has established a technological basis that is rapidly converting the art of copper leaching' into a science. Leaching of copper, whether from copper-bearing ore or waste, follows well established chemical reactions. These reactions are commonly in an acid circuit, but where leaching of copper is to be made in rock that is a high acid consumer, ammonia and ammonia carbonate, as well as cyanide leach solutions, can be used effectively. Current hydrometallurgical processes are being applied at an ever increasing rate to recover the trace amounts of copper in copper mine waste by in-place leaching. Currently approximately 300, 000 tons of copper are produced annually in this manner where as recently as ten years ago, only one-eighth of this amount of precipitate copper was produced.. Where copper occurs as an oxide in higher concentrations as to be classified as an ore rather than waste, then the hydro-metallurgical processes are applied as percolation or agitation leaching in vats, pachuca tanks, or prepared heaps. This approach gives better control over the recovery of the leach solutions, particularly in the processes where ammonia or cyanide leaching agents are to be used.

Nevada is primarily known today for its nation-leading production of gold and silver. However, industrial mineral production continues to play an important role in providing construction materials to help make the state the fastest growing in the United States. Aggregate production in Nevada was about 20 million tons in 1991. Most of that was used in construction in the fast-growing Las Vegas area. The state leads the nation in the production of barite and mined magnesite and has significant production of lithium carbonate, diatomite and gypsum. Other industrial minerals produced in the state include specialty clays, silica, lime and dolomite and relatively small production in salt, perlite and dimension stone. Industrial minerals operations are subject to state and federal permitting requirements, especially in the areas of air and water quality and mined land reclamation. As in all segments of the mineral producing industries throughout the nation, the amount and complexity of regulations affecting industrial minerals has increased significantly in recent years. Nevada is no exception.

This paper will discuss bentonite deposits in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The discussion will be re¬stricted to a review of the so-called calcium or non-swelling bentonites. In other words the exchangeable cation is calcium. The term "bentonite" is used to describe a clay material, composed essentially of the clay mineral montmorillonite. In addition, bentonites may contain various impurities such as glass shards, feldspar, quartz, muscovite and biotite mica, glauconite, pyrite, hydrated iron oxide, gypsum, organic material, etc, Most of the southern calcium bentonites contain at least 70% montmorillonite, Bentonite as mined may range in color from dark grayish greens through various shades of grays, reds, yellows and browns to nearly white. It is normally massive and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. When air dried, closely spaced shrinkage fractures occur. Moist bentonite has a soapy feel, with little or no obvious "grit". Bentonite deposits were first discovered in Mississippi about 1925, in southern Monroe County. During the thirties and early 1940's, deposits were identified in Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Perhaps the earliest production of southern bentonite was from a deposit in the valley of the Tombigdee River, south of Jackson, Alabama in 1936. Production commenced in Mississippi during the latter part of 1938 at Pontotoc. The growth and development of the bentonite industry in the southern United States owes its beginning to three events. In order to store high-level radioactive waste underground, the German repository concept considers clay, crystalline and salt formations as suitable host rock materials (National Citizens’ Oversight Committee, 2024). The current research projects of the Chair Underground Mining Methods at TUBAF (Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg) in nuclear waste repositories mainly focus on storage within salt formations. In this scenario, the high-level radioactive waste is supposed to be packed into specifically designed containers and then transported underground and emplaced in horizontal storage drifts. The residual temperature of the radioactive waste leads to the question if there are optimization possibilities for waste handling, the storage and the long-term emplacement of such high temperature level waste. A deeper understanding of the heat transmission from the container into the host rock might lead both towards possibly shorter surface interim storage times as well as size optimization possibilities of the repository itself. TUBAF has conducted research that successfully proved that an optimized container positioning yields more favorable thermal patterns and can be achieved with conventional mining equipment.

Historically, research organizations have made significant contributions to the development and commercialization of new chemical products for the mining industry and examples of commercial results are cited With the recent demise of research organizations within the mining industry and dynamic changes in the industry, the supporting role of R&D groups has become limited or non-existent. Cat- reduction requirements and new raw-material sources offer future opportunities for R&D organizations to continue their effective participation in the commerical development of new chemical products. Potential areas of interest for future process applications are reviewed.

The cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis are located side by side on a double loop in the Mississippi River near the eastern boundary of Minnesota. Both cities lie on both sides 'of the Mississippi River, which in this region describes an S-shaped curve. The two cities together have a population of over 600,000 people, gathered in an area which has grown to be a single urban district inasmuch as the two cities have expanded until they occupy all the territory formerly between them, though the business centers are ten miles apart. St. Paul is located at the head of navigation on the Mississippi River and Minneapolis, farther upstream, at the Falls of St. Anthony. A recent water¬power development below the Falls of St. Anthony, constructed by the Federal Government, has at the same time made possible navigation to the foot of St. Anthony Falls through a lock around the dam which replaces the former rapids. Minneapolis, in 1920, had a population of 380,000 people, and St. Paul, 235,000. The two cities occupy land at an elevation of 700 to 900 feet above sea level. The average elevation is slightly less at St. Paul. Minneapolis has nearly 4,000 acres of parks and park¬ways, while St. Paul has nearly 2,000.

One way of increasing conveyor systems productivity is by monitoring the key parameters in the systems. In this paper, a new line of smart bearings will be presented and discussed. The new bearings are capable of monitoring temperature, vibrations, and belt speed for early detection of potentially serious problems. The new smart bearings have built in sensors that are carefully integrated and protected for long life service. These bearings are going to be the key to increasing the up time of belt conveyors in the future.

The single most unique design feature of the Centralia Coal Mine is the public information program. Just what the heck does public information have to do with the development of a coal mine? The utilities of today have had to build larger and larger plants to keep down the costs of power to the consumer. The large plants require huge amounts of capital, take up large areas of real estate, consume unprecedented amounts of coal, and generate large quantities of waste products which have to be reckoned with. Coal mines supplying these plants have also increased in size and production to meet the power plants' unending appetite for coal. This means the disturbance of great areas of land and significant alterations to the landscape. Today's public is greatly concerned about the environment in which he is living. The great size of a power plant with its large stacks, coal piles, and the coal mine with its large earth movers, disturbed acreages and the resulting waste products of both operations appears to present a threat to his environment. Because of this,' many power plants and coal mines are having public acceptance problems. This has resulted in the passage of stringent legislation and in some cases brought upon construction delays for major power plants.

This paper describes the serious injuries that have occurred to bulldozer operators working at domestic coal, metal and nonmetal mines in the United States. A serious injury is defined as one that results in either a fatality or in lost work time. Examined were 873 injury records compiled by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The time period covered was 1988 through 1997. These injuries resulted in 18 fatalities and 31,866 lost work days. All of these injuries occurred to dozer operators while they were performing common production tasks. An injury classification system was developed to code the narrative information that describes the circumstances surrounding the injuries. Jolts and jars accounted, for 604 or 70% of the serious injuries to bulldozer operators, and jolts and jars accounted for 75% of the workdays lost. Vertical jars comprised the largest set (354 incidents) of jolting and jarring injuries. In more than half of these incidents, the operator was backing up the dozer. Working near an edge carries significant risk for fatal injuries. Of 116 incidents where the dozer fell over an edge, rolled over or fell into a hidden void, 14 (12%) resulted in fatal injuries. In cases where the dozer operator either jumped or was thrown out of the cab in a fallover or rollover, seven out of 17 of the operators were killed. This study finds that further reductions in injury risk would require more widespread use of seat belts; consideration (and maintenance) of the seat and seat suspension systems that might reduce injury risk from jolts and jars; research interventions to assess the effect of alternative engineering designs to dampen or isolate the effects of shock and vibration; and continued attention to skilled performance, i.e., the integration of hazard awareness, recognition and response with dozer operational skills.

Diatomite or diatomaceous earth is composed of innumerable microscopic opaline skeletons of single-celled aquatic plants called diatoms. The unique properties of this material enable it to be used as an important filtration medium and filler. The Circumpacific contains several economic deposits of diatomite. The largest of these is located in Lompoc, Ca. This deposit is the world's largest, purest, and most uniform marine deposit currently being mined. The other Circumpacific deposits are of fresh water origin. These deposits and Lompoc's unique marine deposit are significant sources of the world's diatomite supply.

California's Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) was passed in 1975 to identify and protect mineral resources in areas of high land-use conflict and ensure reclamation of mined lands. Under SMARA, aggregate resource availability is quantified and compared to forecasted demand in specific market regions. Fifteen regions studied thus far cover 20,000 square miles and contain 50 billion tons of high-quality aggregate resources which have been legally designated as ?regionally significant?, providing a measure of protection previously unavailable. SMARA reports and State testimony at local hearings have supplied objective information and helped reduce conflict in mine-permitting decisions.

Measuring the specific gravity of a pulp in concentrating plants is a relative, y simple procedure, but the desired accuracy is often difficult to attain. Many plants use the system of weighing a known volume of the pulp on a scale. In many cases, this method is quite accurate, but obtaining a true sample presents quite a problem. This is especially true when the pulp tends to froth, the solids settle rapidly, or the flow is fast at the point of sampling. There is also the problem of the operator neglecting to take the sample because of duties elsewhere, or, if everything Is apparently running smoothly, he assumes the pulp density is also all right. In 1952, the Pine Creek plant of Union Carbide Nuclear Company began working on a better method for measuring and controlling pulp density. After an extensive investigation of different methods for measuring the specific gravity of moving pulps, the Research Department decided that the bubble tube method appeared to be the simplest and most promising for our applications. It consists of two bubble tubes, of different lengths, submersed in a pulp. Low pressure air is supplied to, the two tubes through sight bubblers to maintain approximately equal volume of air to each bubble tube. The bubble tubes are also connected to a differential manometer, one to each side. Therefore, knowing the vertical distance between the outlets of the bubble tubes, the manometere can be calibrated to measure directly the specific gravity of the pulp. (Figure No. 1 illustrates this model.)

The Carlin Trend is North America's premier gold producing district. It is located in northeastern Nevada's Elko and Eureka Counties along a northwest trending belt about 65 km (40 miles) long and 8 km (5 miles) wide (Thorstad, 1989; Jones, 1989). This trend is the worldwide reference site for epithermal, sedimentary rock-hosted microscopic gold deposits. At least 19 deposits have been discovered to date, varying in size from 933 kg to 1.08 kt (30,000 to 35 million contained oz) of gold (Fig. 1). Newmont Gold Co. and its parent, Newmont Mining Corp., jointly constitute the largest mineral right holders in the district. They own or control more than 1000 km'- (386 sq miles) in and around the Carlin Trend and own all or part of 16 out of the 19 mines and prospects identified to date. Since the initiation of Newmont's exploration activities in the Carlin Trend in 1961, 2.24 kt (72 million oz) of cumulative gold resources have been identified. Cumulative production from all mines since the start-up of Newmont's Carlin mine in 1965 to the end of 1989 was about 202 t (6.5 million oz) (Jones, 1989). The incentive of sustained high gold prices and innovation in processing technology resulted in a significant acceleration of gold output over the last few years. Newmont Gold alone produced more than 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) in 1989. That is equal to 22% of the cumulative 1965 to 1988 output, and an almost 200% increase over its 1986 output.

INTRODUCTION The first phase of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project consists of 7.1 km of subway and stations running through downtown Los Angeles from Union Station to MacArthur Park. Contract A146, Tunnels from 5th/HILL Station to 7th/Flower Station, involves tunnel construction through the heart of downtown Los Angeles. The alignment of the tunnels passes beneath twelve buildings, ranging from a 3-story below grade parking structure to numerous 12 to 14 story buildings. The soil along the alignment is alluvium, consisting of silts and clays, clean sands and gravels located above the ground water table. Because of unstable ground conditions, which led to excessive ground losses in several instances, and because of the potential for excessive building settlements, it became necessary to design and perform a program of chemical grouting. The chemical grouting program was designed such that tunneling could proceed on a one shift per day basis, with chemical grounting being performed on the remaining two shifts. Each day 21,000 to 31,000 liters of sodium silicate grout were injected through sleeveport grout pipes installed 18 m deep through the tunnel face. Tunnel advance rates of 12 m per day, 60 m per week, under full chemical grout cover were achieved. The chemical grouting program virtually eliminated both ground loss and settlement and permitted successful excavation of the tunnels. There are certain site-specific geological and physical features of a rock mass which control its behavior under the dynamic stresses induced by the action of explosives. It is essential that blasting technology be adapted specifically to those features. There does not exist a single, simple "right" way for each type of blasting operation, but rather each operation must be custom-designed for each site. When this is done, it is often possible to produce unusual but highly desirable end resglts, such as undisturbed narrow rock walls, monoliths and square benches. Although the techniques illustrated here were developed specifically for "sculpture blasting", the geomechanics principles would apply to other types of blasting control, both large-scale and small-scale. Because the techniques are designed more for the purpose of modifying the site responses which would ordinarily be expected than they are to developing new "blasting formulae?, the name "Modified Site Response Blasting" will be used.

After a brief definition of asbestos and a review of regulations, the elements of asbestos dust control are outlined for various asbestos manufacturing industries. To prevent the asbestos dust to become airborne, the general procedure is to control the dust at the source by enclosure and exhaustion. The asbestos dust is collected and removed from the air with bag filter collectors of high efficiency (better than 99%) to ensure that the air emitted to the general environment or returned to the workplace are below the existing asbestos emissions regulations. Dust control systems should be regularly inspected and serviced to maintain at all times the efficiency and reliability of the equipment. Other effective procedures for asbestos dust control are also considered.

This paper describes some recent work on the identification and development of new chemical reagents aimed at improving the industrial processing of phosphate ores by froth flotation. In particular, three chemical product families which will be discussed appear to offer enhanced flexibility by: 1) utilizing a small amount of a silica control reagent which can significantly reduce the amount of anionic (carboxylic) collector required for a given P2O5 recovery level; 2) utilizing a new anionic collector family which offers high P2O5 recovery and selectivity versus standard carboxylic collectors; and 3) utilizing another new anionic collector family which has, in some tests, allowed for selective removal of dolomite from apatite. Examples and use characteristics of each of these new chemical ideas will be presented.
