An essential prerequisite to expanding the application of longwall mining techniques in the United States is the development of a better understanding of the mechanics of rock mass deformation near the mined seam, in the inter- burden and at the surface. The results of studies of this type will provide a basis for the development of empirical and/or numerical modeling techniques to predict the rock mass response to mining both near and far from the mined seam. This will lead to improved gate and panel design, resulting in maximum recovery, increased productivity, as well as provide a mechanism for assessing likely surface effects induced by long- wall mining. Presented here is the instrument plan to be used at Kitt Mine No. 1 in the study of rock mass response to two adjacent longwall panels.

Knowledge of local coal mine roof geology is critical to the design of a safe and suitable mine structure. An automated drill control and data collection system has been designed for a J.H. Fletcher twin-head roof bolter. Drilling parameters collected during the drilling process can be used to interpret geologic features intercepted in the mine roof. The drill and data collection system have been tested in both laboratory and underground settings. Visualization of certain drilling data has shown good correlation with geology drilled. A quantitative prediction model was developed using drilling parameters examined with data visualization. The quantitative model was tested using laboratory drilling data.

St. Joseph Lead Company has been paying incentive bonuses for well over 40 years. In 1958 almost half of St. Joe's 1,860 employees in Southeast Missouri received some form of incentive bonus in addition to their guaranteed wages. There are very few payroll jobs in St. Joe s Southeast Missouri organization that lend themselves to a reasonably good measurement of production or quality, or both, where an incentive bonus is not paid. The term "Incentive Bonus" is used to differentiate betwen bonuses that are based on quantity or quality of work, and those that are merely additional pay of a standard amount per hour or day because of an employee being temporarily assigned to some unusual task, An employee temporarily assigned to a job where the working conditions make the job performance unusually difficult or where a special skill is used is often given a bonus of some standard amount per hour or shift in addition to his usual rate. This is merely a convenient way of paying something extra without disturbing the normal rate structure. Actually, it is differential pay similar to that almost universally paid for evening and night shift work. Bonuses of that type are not being considered in this paper. The basic reason or theory for paying incentive bonuses 9s to get improved production at lower cost, Unfortunately, it is often difficult, if not impossible, to find a yardstick by which it can be definitely proved that a particular bonus plan is accomplishing its purpose, It becomes, then, a matter of judgment on the part of management personnel as to the value of the bonus plan. The fact that St. Joe Lead Company has continued to pay bonuses for over 40 yews and has increased the number of bonus schedules used attests to a definite belief that they are beneficial to the company's successful operations.

The intensity of environmental conflict, the delays and legal battles that have marked the 1970's suggest the need for additional processes to resolve environmental disputes. Our present means frequently fail to address the real issues separating individuals and institutions. They are primarily adversary processes that foster polarization and reduce cooperative efforts. At the Office of Environmental Mediation, we have no quarrel with adversary processes nor with polarization, for both serve as important spurs to necessary change. We do seek cooperation among parties at a point where there can be a realistic expectation of success in facilitating a resolution of their mutual differences.

CONTAC Engineers is a Chilean based company which works on process control and automation, principally for the minning industry. Jointly with other local and international engineering firms, CONTAC has participated in most of the last expansion and modernization plans being carried out at the Chilean pinning industry. At presente, CONTAC is involved on a research and development plan for the design and implementation of new instrument and process control procedures for mineral process automation. One of these efforts is the design of an ore size analyzer for coarse ore being transported over a conveyor belt. A feasibility and prototype study was made at a SAG Mill Plant and currently a high resolution, high speed analyzer is being developed. It will became available on early 1986.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) imposed a no-blasting specification (blasting is restricted to the construction shaft and shaft bottom or boot) on the Deep Tunnel project in 1988. This was prompted by numerous complaints from the residents in the vicinity of the project, and controversies experienced on previous projects from blasting the rock overlying the tunnel. This paper will describe the methods utilized by two major contractors who are driving 20 km (12.5 of tunnel along with drilling over 36 shafts under this restrictive specification. The impacts on design, construction, schedule, cost, and the environment are detailed.

INTRODUCTION The Alimak method of raising (Fig. 1) was intro¬duced in 1957. Because of its flexibility, economy, and speed, it soon became the most used system of raising in the world. With the same unit, raises of various areas, inclinations, and lengths can be driven. Air-motor¬-driven raise climbers normally are used in mines with short raises (Fig. 2). For longer raises electric or diesel-¬hydraulic drives are used. The Alimak raise climber is designed entirely in ac¬cordance with the instructions of the Swedish Board of Industrial Safety (Arbetarskyddsstyrelsen). There are good margins of safety concerning the breaking strength of the material and the raise climber comprises safety devices and features that practically eliminate the risks of accidents. The drive gear of air-driven climbers is equipped with an air-operated brake which is automatically activated when air for the motors is shut off. There is a safety device which activates automatically at overspeed and a speed-regulated brake for descent by gravity, by which the raise climber can be taken down to the bottom of the raise in case of cutoff of the air supply. The raise climber climbs along a pin rack welded to a guide rail which also comprises pipes for air and water. The guide. rail can be extended by using 1- or 2-m (3.2¬or 6.4-ft) sections as the driving progresses. Each guide rail section is bolted to the rock wall by special expan¬sion bolts of Alimak design. Men ride up to the face in the cage, traveling com¬fortably and easily while material is transported on the platform. There is no dangerous climbing up ladders. The men are well protected during ascent and arrive in good condition at the face. The greatest advantages of raise climber systems are flexibility and versatility. "Tungsten extraction is a subject of global interest due to is properties. These properties, such as its high melting point, have contributed to the development of metallurgical extraction processes that can be adapted to the particular chemical composition and mineralogy of the ore. In Colombia there is a research deficit in tungsten related areas, and especially with regard to its extractive metallurgy. In this study the physical, chemical and mineralogical characterization of a sample were performed. Subsequently, crushing and grinding were employed to reduce the material to a more convenient size, making it suitable for further concentration and metallurgical processes. Through physical concentration techniques it was obtained a concentrated ranging between 60 -70 % of WO3 content.INTRODUCTION Tungsten is a metal of great economic importance due to its excellent properties such as high density and extraordinary melting point 3422°C), which is indeed the highest of all the elements. Tungsten is primarily used in metal alloys, manufacture of special steels, coatings and catalysts; products of interest to both international and national industry. However; given that the use and economic value is determined by the percentage of tungsten in the mineral, particle size and chemical associations, it becomes essential to properly characterize the mineral to further define possible metallurgical extraction routes. The metallurgical processes for minerals enriched in tungsten may vary depending on location and the genesis of the ore body, which means that for each ore a particular set of operating conditions must be determined. This is important since process standardization can lead to misuse of the mineral resource. However, in Colombia there is a research deficit as it relates to minerals enriched in tungsten and to its extractive metallurgy. Then, there is a need to conduct studies that can lead to a better understanding of the ore, and to develop extraction processes for the metal of interest. EXPERIMENTAL A state of the art review was made in order to gain insights of the tungsten metallurgical process. Comminution was necessary with the aim to reduce the sample size; therefore the sample was taken into crushing and grinding stages. Concentration techniques such as magnetic separation, gravity and / or electrostatic were also applied. Physical, chemical and mineralogical characterization were performed by using polished sections, grain size determination, X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques."

Ground water, one of Florida's most valuable resources, is also one of its most abundant. The State is fortunate to have several prolific ground- water reservoirs that yield tremendous quantities of water to wells and to some of the world's largest springs. These ground-water reservoirs, or aquifers are of two types artesian and nonarteaian. Ad artesian aquifer is one that contains water under sufficient pressure to rise above the top of the oontaining formation. A nonartesian aquifer is one that contains water which is not confined, and the upper water surface (water table) is free to rise and fall. The principal source of ground water in Florida is the artesian Floridan aquifer which supplies most of the water users in the State. Nonartesian sources include the Biscayne aquifer of southeastern Florida, the sand-and-gravel aquifer of extreme western Florida, and a shallow aquifer which lies at depths of less than 100 feet over much of the State. The accompanying map shows the approximate areas where these aquifers are the main source of supply; however, the boundaries do not represent the areal extents of the aquifers. For example, the Floridan aquifer extends beyond the southern boundary shown on the map, but it is not of great economic significance there because the water is highly mineralized. Aquifers other than the four described occur in the State, but they are, for the most part, of minor significance. One of these is an artesian aquifer which is formed by permeable zones that occur locally within the confining beds above the Floridan aquifer.

Biology opens a new frontier for the mining industry. With rising environmental concerns, the need to couple conventional chemical and physical technologies with sustainable approaches is pressing. At Allonnia, we harness microbial processes to create innovative and environmentally responsible technologies with broad applications. The native microbial community (microbiome) remains largely unexplored at most mining sites, unlike the geochemical environment. The exploration of complex biological reactions that could transform mining technology is just starting and holds vast possibilities, spanning bio-cementation, carbon sequestration, ore beneficiation, water mitigation, bioleaching, metals recovery, and more. Allonnia has collected samples from mine sites in Australia, Africa, and North America to characterize the microbiome and uncover the genetic potential present in mineral-rich environments. We are evaluating microbial metabolites that selectively solubilize gangue from various ores. In addition, biological reactions hold promise as tailings stabilizers. Our early efforts illustrate exciting prospects for harnessing biology’s potential in mining.

High-pressure grinding rolls subject the feed material to pressures of 200 N/mm? During this process considerable size reduction and the Formation of flakes occur. This paper describes the basic consideration For design and operating of this type of mill. It is also shown that the particle size distribution resulting from this process is typical for grinding processes but untypical for crushing processes. High pressure grinding rolls are designed in size of up to 2.8 m roll diameter allowing feed material top sizes of 250 mm. The rigid frame, bearing and drive - train design allows a broad application of the high-pressure grinding rolls operating the machine in open or semi-closed and closed circuit for dry and moist feed materials. Operating results show that capacity increases of up to 100 % can be accomplished with this technology. The high-pressure grinding roll also, allows for lower operating and maintenance costs due to energy savings of up to 20 L and reduction of wear to less than 1 76 for dry and less than 0.1 5 for wet grinding. Other advantages of the high-pressure grinding rolls are smaller equipment sizes than a ball or SAG-mill for a given capacity resulting in lower building sizes with reduced capital in- vestment costs.

To assist in the reduction of environmental degradation resulting from milling operations, the Bureau of Mines has developed, and successfully demonstrated, chemical, vegetative, and combined chemical-vegetative procedures for stabilizing milling wastes under varying environmental conditions. Costs of achieving reclamation using these stabilization procedures are compared with those of other physical and vegetative approaches. The Bureau's chemical-vegetative procedure for establishing vegetation directly on fine-sized wastes compares favorably with other stabilization processes that have been used.

"The development of a mining project necessarily progresses through many steps, beginning with the identification of a mineral resource and continuing through project construction. Several classifications of engineering study development are described, including preliminary economic assessment (PEA) or scoping studies, prefeasibility studies (PFS), feasibility studies (FS) and regulatory codes, each with a specific project organizational objective. This paper addresses the PEA, PFS and FS types of reports that are used by companies to evaluate projects, meet regulatory requirements and seek financing. The minimum requirements for engineering studies, focusing on the needs of financial institutions considering investment in a project, are outlined. IntroductionThe financing of mining projects in recent years has come under increased scrutiny by financial institutions owing primarily to an increasing percentage of projects whose capital expenditures had overrun project budgets or had failed to produce the economic returns anticipated during the project development process. Often, unfavorable project outcomes are not the result of widespread failures of the project engineering process but arise from inadequate engineering in limited specific areas of the project scope, such as overestimated mineral reserve, inadequate mine design, insufficient metallurgical testing or underestimated capital costs. Mill facilities and process infrastructure typically are responsible for up to 80 percent of the capital expenditures required by greenfield mining projects. They are often the project areas where capital costs are inadequately developed, and consequently are the areas highly scrutinized by financial institutions. This paper offers a perspective on the level of engineering expected by financial institutions as a prerequisite to committing support to developing mining projects.The evaluation of a mining project from exploration through development and production is a lengthy and complicated process. Mine development commitment activities for a potential project are initiated when a mineral resource is identified and continue through to the start of construction. The technical feasibility and the economic viability of each project are determined during the phases of mine development with more detailed engineering data required at each stage. Disc Cutter Wear is influenced by several geological and technical factors and excessive wear can have a major impact on the excavation efficiency of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). Disc cutter replacement events cause a disruption to the construction schedule and costs, and should be minimized throughout the project to the extent possible. A well-executed cutterhead inspection and maintenance plan can help mitigate abrupt cutterhead interventions and reduce its effect on project schedule and cost. This paper examines cutterhead inspection and disc cutter replacement events as well as subsequent wear data recorded in the first 7km of the 10.3 km long, 6.3 m diameter Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel (CBT) project in Toronto, Ontario. The CBT alignment is mainly through Georgian Bay Formation shale.

In this investigation, the changes in the grindability of both ulexite and colemanite related with the different structural modifications created by the heat treatment were examined with respect to work index (Wi). The effects of the heat treatment temperature and time on grindability index were also investigated. It was observed that, heat treatment significantly affected on the grindability of ulexite. The work index of original ulexite was found 7.11 kWh/shton and decreased to 3.5 kWh/shton level within 200-480°C for 60 minutes. On the other hand, the work index of original colemanite was found as 6.48 kWh/shton and no appreciable change was observed when heated up to 320°C. Thermally assisted comminution can be used to improve the grindability characteristics of ulexite. Besides, the different behaviour of ulexite and colemanite under heat treatment can be used for their separation. The artificial mixture of ulexite and colemanite could be separated with over 90% recovery by utilizing their different grindability characteristics by thermal treatment, semi-autogeneous grinding and screening.

"The electrokinetic and flotation behaviors of ilmenite using lead ions as the activator and sodium oleate as the collector were studied. The results of microflotation show that the flotability of ilmenite can be improved by lead ions obviously. The isoelectric point of ilmenite increases from 5.32 to 7.7 after the addition of lead ions because of the adsorption of Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+. The results of zeta potential measurements and the collector adsorption density calculation show that the adsorption of sodium oleate on the ilmenite surface via chemisorptions in addition to electrostatic interactions. Besides, the adsorption density calculation results show that as the addition of lead ions as the activator, the adsorption amounts of collector are greater than those without activation which is in aggrement with the flotation behaviors. INTRODUCTION Ilmenite, as an oxide mineral of formula FeTiO3, is usually used as the main resource of the extraction of titanium (Bulatovic and Wyslouzil, 1999). There are many researches showing that the conventional methods, such as gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation, do not work efficiently as expected (Mehdilo et al., 2015; Zhu et al., 2011). Nowadays, to produce ilmenite concentration feasibly and efficiently, these separation methods above are combined for a reason that the raw ilmenite ores are characteristic of poor, fine and complicated. Moreover, surface modification, such as surface dissolution method, microwave irradiation and oxidation roasting, is applied to improve the flotability of ilmenite currently (Welham and Llewellyn, 1998; Zhang and Ostrovski, 2002). Generally, fatty acid salts are used as the collector for the flotation of oxide minerals and sodium oleate is usually used as the collector for the flotation of imenite ores (Fuerstenau and Pradip, 2005). The mechanism, such as individual ion electrostatic adsorption, chemical adsorption, ion–molecule dimeric complex adsorption, and the coadsorption of ion and molecule, have not been discussed systematically using sodium oleate as the collector in the flotation of ilmenite (Somasundaran, 1983). Under the activation circumstance using the lead ion as the activator and sodium oleate as the collector, the interaction mechanism seems to be still unclear. In the present study, the interaction mechanism between ilmenite and sodium oleate using lead ion as the activator are studied by microflotation, zeta potential measurements and adsorption density calculation. EXPERIMENTAL Materials and reagents Pure ilmenite minerals were obtained from Panzhihua, Sichuan province, China. The minerals were ground in a porcelain mill with an agate ball. Following that, the prosucts were sieved, and the samples of -0.074+0.038 mm size fraction were used for the microflotation experiments. The results of XRF show that the content of titanium element is 30.58%, showing that the purity of ilmenite is above 90%. On the basis of the results of XRF, it is determined that the purity of ilmenite is very high and meets the needs of microflotation"

The ore reserve modelling of stratiform uranium deposits to be mined by selective underground mining methods must be done with consideration of the erratic nature of the ore-forming processes that produced the mineralization. Estimation methods that model the uranium grade as a smooth transition between high-grade and low-grade drill hole intercepts tend to greatly overestimate the ore tonnage. Care must be taken to first establish realtistic ore pod geometries and then estimate the grade of the reserve units within the pods.

The quality of our environment is of great importance to all of us. Today, there is a great public concern about the degradation of our air, land, and water and the resultant slow death of our planet Earth. The miner has always been concerned with his environment. Historically, mining has been a part of the frontier. As a result, the miner has pioneered and developed many parts of the world. In the beginning, he had to hack out a place for his mine, himself, and his family. He was given accolades and praise for his accomplishments. Now, however, he is attacked as a ravager of the landscape. It was and is no different on the Marquette Iron Range in Marquette County, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Iron ore was discovered in 1845 and mining was begun by 1848. Over nearly 1 ¼ centuries, a total of 379,197,000 tons have been shipped to market. Ports, docks, railroads, and towns all had to be built in order to get that tonnage out to iron and steel makers. In those early days the environment had to be mastered, not pampered.
