Strip mining in the domestic coal industry is contributing a greater proportion of overall production than at any time in the past. U. S. Bureau of Mimes statistics show that the percentage of total production mined in 1958 by stripping methods in- creased to more than 30 pct, up from 22 pct in 1951. The tendency to favor strip and open pit mining exists in other mining activities, but such trends are not as clearly outlined as in the coal industry. Significantly, the depth of overburden in coal properties considered suitable for stripping is also increasing. A depth of 50 to 60 ft of overburden was once considered to be about the maximum amount that could be handled economically, Today, a depth of 80 to 100 ft is frequently taken into consideration for simple overcasting operations (i.e., excavating over- burden and dumping it in the spoil position where it remains indefinitely). Significantly, the depth of overburden in coal properties considered suitable for stripping is also increasing. Geometric programming is a mathematical optimization technique, first formulated by Zener [1], for dealing with certain types of functions which typically arise in engineering design problems. The theory provides algorithms for finding the optimal solution, existence theorems by which one can show that a particular design is possible or not; and characterization theorems that especially make possible to obtain the relationships among the optimal design parameters at optimum. It has been demonstrated [2] that this technique can be applied to several design problems in chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering. Design problems in mining, metallurgical and mineral engineering have many aspects similar to that of other engineering problems. Thus it is only natural to consider geometric programming as a potential tool for solving certain optimization problems in mineral industries.

There are two basic problems when one attempts to separate a solution of metal ions utilizing a chelation-solvent extraction cascade (commonly called liquid ion exchange). First, it is impossible to produce any great degree of separation unless the separation factor (also called selectivity, which is the ratio of the distribution coefficients) is very large. Second, the richest possible extracted product, using an infinite number of equilibrium stages, is at best only in equilibrium with the feed solution. These factors combined with equipment design considerations have led to a situation where only the most selective chelating agents are applicable to economic industrial operations. The authors know that distillation techniques are used routinely to separate compounds with nearly identical relative volatilities and that there should be a way of operating solvent extraction cascades in an analogous manner to obtain separations of metal ions. The advantage of this approach would be that solutions of metal ions of any desired purity could be obtained even if the separation factor was close to unity. This paper presents this idea and suggests some possible applications.

As can be guessed from the subtitle, this paper will not be a geologist's one since neither of the authors is a professional geologist. This will be an attempt to present the various aspects of the legal, economic and geological setting that condition the exploration for mineral resources in Haiti. Before going any further, we are going to present a summary of our rather short mining history. One must first mention that Caribbean countries are latecomers to the mining business. If we go back to the colonial period (1500-1600's) there are net many traces of mining activity. The major exception to this is the recovery of alluvial gold in Hispaniola, Puerto-Rico and Cuba and also some sporadic copper mining in Hispaniola (notably in Haiti near the city of Gonaives and in some of the old mining districts in Santo-Domingo). These easily minable deposits were quickly exhausted and mining quite naturally came to an end as agriculture rose as the major economic activity. In the Haitian case, aside from very erratic mention during the 19th Century of the presence of some minerals (i.e. haematite, chalcopyrite) no serious geological work was undertaken. In the meantime, the peasants in the northern part were still looking for alluvial gold in some streams but this amounted to next to nothing. One has to come to the 1920's to find the first comprehensive geological survey. At the time, the country was under the military control of the United States. The American Government sent a team from the U.S.G.S. headed by the late W. Woodring to initiate a survey of the country. Given the lack of transportation, this was a tough task and Woodring and his associates did it magnificently. As a result of their efforts, they published a very thick piece of work of more than 600 pages. "The Geology of the Republic of Haiti" although it was published in 1924 is a classic and is a must for anyone interested in the geology of Haiti.

Section 317(e) of the Federal Coal Mine Health & Safety Act of 1969 directed the Secretary of the Interior to prepare standards under which all working places in a mine shall be illuminated by permissible' lighting while persons are working in such places. Section 317(e) further provides that such Working places shall be illuminated within 18 months after such standards are promulgated. In accordance with this section of the Act, there was published in the Federal Register for December 31,1970 a notice of proposed ru1emaking which prescribed the illumination to be provided in the working p1 aces of underground coal mines. In 1ight of written comments, suggestions, and objections to this proposed ru1emaking, the proposed standards were with-drawn and reproposed in the Federal Register for Wednesday, October 27, 1971. In light of further comments, suggestions, and objections, a public hearing was held on April 4, 1974 and standards were again reproposed and published in the Federal Register for April 1, 1976. Promulgation of the final lighting standards took place on October 1, 1976 which means that the underground coal mining industry must comply with face illumination requirements by April 1, 1978. As mentioned previously, the first proposed ru1emaking for illumination of underground coal mines was published in the Federal Register on October 27, 1971. In early 1972, Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) and the United States Bureau of Mines agreed to a cooperative study of underground face illumination; Conso1 felt that expertise in this field would become increasingly important. Conso1's initial efforts in illumination were aimed at investigati.ng practical lighting systems for underground face equipment. We were concerned with installing unobtrusive lights which provided sufficient face illumination for safety, but at the same time were readily maintainable, electrically reliable, and physically sheltered from damage.

Applying geophysical techniques in potential geothermal areas has received: little attention in the United States, though it is widely used and accepted in New Zealand and Italy. In those countries it has been demonstrated that geophysical surveys can be useful in locating new geothermal areas and in directing test drilling programs. Geophysical studies in a thermal region can provide structural information and, if conditions are right directly; locate subsurface hot waters. They can give indications of sub-alluvial rock types and of the thickness of alluvial cover. In certain cases they can be used to estimate the power potential of a hydrothermal system.

By Sims Some two years ago we began investigating low coke button bituminous coal for use at our Bound Brook, New Jersey plant as a replacement for anthracite. Since August, 1957 the plant has been operating continously on this coal with the exception of a new 200,000#/hr, cyclone boiler. This study was motivated not from our desire to conduct combustion research, but for the sole purpose of reducing our steam costs, The indications were that the economics were greatly in favor of the use of the bituminous coal. The attempts to reduce the costs have developed some knowledge that has enabled this program to succeed reasonably well as will be discussed later by Mr. Ludden. The production of steam size anthracite is dependent upon either the reclamation of old culm banks or the breakage in the production of the domestic sizes. The anthracite industry has not as yet been able to cut, its mining costs to the point where the production of steam sizes has become a profitable business. This has resulted in two basic problems: (1) A constantly rising price in an attempt to have those sizes carry their share of the cost and, (2) Periodic shortages of supply when the demand is good but the market price prohibits the mining of anthracite to produce those sizes only, These conditions have made the long range forecast appear as though the price would go even higher and/or the supply at times be critically short.

"INTRODUCTION Mining activities must be safe and profitable. These two requirements influence each other. The purchase and implementation of safety improvements costs money. Injuries and illnesses at mines stop or delay production and may result in additional costs or a loss of profit. Other effects of injuries and illnesses include the negative influence on employee morale, corporate reputation and conflicts with contract partners. Based on this researchers asked the question: are mines with lower rates of injuries and illnesses more profitable than mines with a higher frequencies? One aspect of this research is the evaluation of the safety situation and the measurement of benefits of safety improvements in the German mining industry. In the following paper, this part of the research will be examined. The main aim is the evaluation of injury rates in different German mining sectors and regions in Germany. SELECTION OF GERMAN MINING OPERATIONS The research team decided to focus the study on the salt and potash and the aggregate and industrial minerals mining industries in Germany. These two mining industries are different in the number and size of operators, structure of the industry, pricing and markets. The selection of two different industries adds to the clarity of the evaluation. Salt and potash mining industry The German salt and potash industry is primarily located central Germany. All salt and potash mines in Germany are underground operations. In 2015, the German potash industry employed 8,100 employees and generated a total revenue of 2 billion Euros. German potash reserves include magnesium compounds like kieserite (MgSO4·H2O), in addition to sylvite (KCl) and carnallite (KMgCl3·6(H2O)). The German salt industry employed 2,300 people in 2015 and generated revenue of 800 million Euros (Krueger, 2015) There are seven mining companies with salt and potash operations: esco-european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, K + S Kali GmbH, Saline Luisenhall GmbH, GSES Glückauf Sondershausen Entwicklungs- und Sicherungs-gesellschaft GmbH, Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG, Wacker Chemie AG and Südsalz GmbH. In this way, esco – european salt company GmbH & Co. KG is an affiliated company. Esco was founded as a joint venture of K + S and Solvay in 2002, since 2004 K + S is the sole holder (esco - european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, 2016). Likewise, the Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG has a controlling interest in Südsalz GmbH (Südsalz GmbH, 2016). Aggregate and industrial minerals mining industry The aggregate mining industry in Germany is comprised of many small mining operations and relevant companies. According to the German Department of Economics (BMWi, 2015), the following industrial materials are classified as aggregates: fluorite, barite, kaolin, quartz and quartz sand, quartzite, silica, loamy and foundry sand, pegmatite sand, shale, clay, bentonite, schistose, limestone and dolomite, gypsum and anhydrite, basaltic lava and lava sand, gravel and split, pebble and silicic sand and peat."

"Name your poison," wrote Forbes, Jan. 3, 1983, in an article describing the plight of much of the mineral industry as it entered the new year. "To ask which (mining) segment is better these days is almost like asking which of several stones would make a better life preserver." "The scene has seldom seemed darker or apparently less promising," said the Mining Journal in June 1982. And the Northern Miner described the year as the third in a "3-year drought which has completely dried up (company) coffers." Thus, 1982 became the worst year for much of the mining industry since the Great Depression. Low prices, commodity surpluses, output reductions, layoffs, temporary and permanent closures, and financial losses made headlines as the general recession continued to hurl blows at an industry facing strong foreign competition, increased government regulations, and plummeting market demand. At fault were tight US monetary policies and the resulting high interest rates that, while forcing inflation to slow, also threw the economic wheels of the country into reverse gear. Automobile production, housing starts, consumer durable sales, and capital spending all fell dramatically. US industrial production fell about 8.5% in 1982, with the GNP dropping by 1.7%. Production Value Not a single mineral escaped this recession. According to the US Bureau of Mines, US nonfuel production value dropped for all but four out of 21 metals and 14 out of 44 nonmetals. Production quantities increased for only gold, lead, and zirconium among metals and for only six nonmetals. Total nonfuel mineral production value dropped a whopping 21% from 1981 levels, the largest decline since 1938 and the first since 1971. Production value was estimated at $20 billion. Metal commodities showed heavier losses than nonmetals-37% vs. 12%-because of their link to depressed automobile and construction industries. Prices From peaks in early 1980, prices of precious and base metals, ferrous and nonferrous metals, and virtually every mineral dropped to 30-month lows in June 1982. Gold dropped to $9.64/g ($300/oz) compared to a high of $27/g ($850/ oz). Silver was quoted below 164/g ($5/oz) versus a $1.61/g ($50/oz) high. Copper was offered at a five-year low of $1.22/kg (55.5¢/lb) compared with a high of $3.30/kg ($1.50/lb). Lead went for 53¢/kg (24¢/lb) versus $1.21 (554). Nickel begged for buyers at $4.19/kg ($1.90/lb) compared to a high price of $7.72/kg ($3.50/lb). Molybdenum was available at or below $8.82/kg ($4/lb), down from a high of $44/kg ($20/lb). Cobalt went for $11/kg ($5/lb) versus $55/kg ($25/lb). Adjusted for inflation, increased currency costs, and currency devaluation, many of these prices are the lowest reached in decades. Financial Profits & Losses Low prices severely impacted companies' earnings, turning profits into sometimes disastrous or fatal losses. Robert Norton, director of the US Bureau of Mines, noting there has been a recession in the mineral industry for years, said, "Profit rates as related to invested capital have been considerably lower (for mining) than those of other industries. Strip mining with draglines and other surface equipment has traditionally been the method of choice for mining shallow deposits. This is particularly true for soft deposits that require little or no blasting. High rates of productivity and low operating costs have set this standard. However, these methods can be improved. Strip mining methods are batch processes and difficult to accommodate in processing. Moreover, they are encumbered with overburden removal, reclamation expense, and human inefficiencies. This paper describes the invention of a novel shallow earth mining technique called the Softwall Mining Method. Softwall Mining is an adaptation of longwall mining for loose earth conditions. The method was specifically invented for recovering phosphatic clay ore from beds in North Central Florida, but is likely to be suitable for a number of other minerals as well. Potential deposits for which the method may be well suited include placers, disseminated deposits in soft host rocks, bauxite, soft coals and lignite deposits, and other deposits where overburden will subside readily and where the ore can be hydraulically broken and slurried. Unit operating cost advantages are expected over the current dragline systems used. The Softwall mining advantages are its high rates of productivity, control and automation of the mining process, reduction of dilution and waste, and elimination of the majority of stripping and reclamation.

The United States Forest Service, as a land managing agency, is responsible for the surface administration of National Forest lands. The basic objectives of management are protection and utilization of renewable resources such as water, forage, timber, wildlife, recreation, and clean air. Much of the National Forest land in this country is open to mineral prospecting and development. When large de-posits of minerals are extracted from the forest environment, especially by surface methods, there are oftentimes conflicts between accepted mining methods and the objectives of other resource management goals. Such is the situation in Southeast Idaho where several members of the phosphate industry are operating on and adjacent to the Caribou National Forest. In 1966, the phosphate industry and the Caribou National Forest became mutually concerned with the problems of rehabilitating mined areas and minimizing potential damage to adjacent forest areas. A Cooperative Administrative Study was initiated with industry supporting the Forest Service financially and with equipment, material, and manpower, as well as interest and enthusiasm. The objectives of the study are to provide basic, applicable information pertinent to: 1. Protecting the quality of water emanating from mined water-sheds. 2. Providing for soil stabilization on mined areas. 3. Returning mined areas to surface resource production. 4. The feasibility of making mined areas esthetically acceptable. It was concluded that the following separate--yet intergrated--fields should be studied in order to obtain the desired information:

The ventilation of a bituminous coal mine by means t of a Forced and, or, Exhaust system of ventilation is certainly not new to the mining industry, however, we know from experience that the ventilation of every coal mine presents a variety of problems which are in some instances approached by different methods or means, As in every such problem, there is some difference of opinion as to the advantages and disadvantages of s Exhaust versus Forced ventilation, particularly with regard to safe and effective ventilation of an active pillar area in a gaseous coal mine. We at Island Creek, certainly concede that it is possible to safely ventilate a coal mine by means of Forced ventilation, However, following many years experience in operating a coal mine in an extremely gaseous coal seam, we prefer using an Exhaust system, that is, to reduce the inside mine pressure to a minus atmospheric pressure by means of a mechanically operated fan. This method assures that the return air moving through established airways toward the fan will continue to move in that same direction for a limited time should the fan stop for any reason, also assuring that in the event of a large area fall, the air from the abandoned workings will move directly to the suction side or to the return airways.

Since the 1981 record of 54 mm tons of US fertilizer consumption, grain surpluses in the US have brought about massive acreage reduction programs, decreased fertilizer consumption, and resulting price pressures caused by excess capacity. The strong US dollar that reduced export sales of both grain and fertilizer, and new offshore manufacturing capacity using US engineering/contracting know-how have combined to put US producers of phosphate fertilizers in uncompetitive postures. While recent events suggest the industry may be growing out of this capacity problem, the cost of US phosphates will continue to be disadvantaged by such external factors as taxes, environ- mental regulations, and high power costs. There is no reason to expect help from the government in the form of reduced environmental regulation and taxation. In order to survive, phosphate fertilizer producers will have to develop technologies and adopt strategies that result in world competitive production costs. Current responses to the need to reduce costs include reduced energy costs through cogeneration, innovative reclamation techniques that create valuable land, and in- creased raw material recovery achieved by operator proficiency. While new technology offers long-term benefits for the producer, present efforts are concentrated on more mundane management efforts to reduce costs. Major attention is being given to the problems of labor utilization and productivity. Raw materials suppliers are being asked to renegotiate contracts which more appropriately reflect conditions in an industry operating at about 50% of capacity. Achievements in these and other areas will allow the producers to continue operating until longer term benefits materialize. `

This paper describes the importance of mine ventilation and air conditioning in the operation of a nuclear waste repository. It discusses the impact of ventilation on determining the number and size of shafts and access drifts to and within a repository horizon. The paper also describes the need to maintain separate ventilation systems for waste emplacement and construction operations. The requirement to have filtration capabilities for exhaust air from waste emplacement areas is discussed. Because radioactive high level waste will induce high temperatures in the emplacement drifts, the ability to cool an emplacement drift for re-entry requirements is important. The paper discusses strategies to cool an emplacement drift and the possibility of using continuous airflow to control temperatures in these drifts.

"This research sought to facilitate improved stakeholder (community) analysis using discrete choice theory (DCT). The work considered 16 project attributes and four demographic factors. The discrete choice experiment was conducted in Salt Lake City, Utah to illustrate the usefulness of DCT in mining stakeholder analysis. The data was used in discrete choice modeling of individual preferences. The approach answers three important questions for enhanced stakeholder analysis: (1) What are the factors that affect individual preferences? (2) What is the effect of demographics on individual preferences? (3) What is the value of environmental and social impacts to individuals in the community? INTRODUCTION Stakeholder analysis is crucial for effective stakeholder engagement because it is important to identify and characterize stakeholders in order to effectively engage in dialogue with them. This is not only true for all stakeholders but true for characterizing the members of a particular stakeholder. The local community is usually the largest and most diverse single stakeholder group. Also, the local community is perhaps the most important stakeholder group. Thus, analysis of the local community is essential for project management. Conventional mining stakeholder analysis is a three-step process, which involves evaluating: (1) each stakeholder’s view of the project (positive, neutral, or negative); (2) how influential each stakeholder is (high, medium, or low); and (3) how they will be impacted by the project (high, medium, or low) (ICMM, 2012). The results of this evaluation are documented in a stakeholder analysis matrix (Table 1), which is used to classify the stakeholders into three groups: highly influential supporter of the project, neutral about the project, and highly influential opponent of the project. This process can be used to describe groups of stakeholders (e.g. community, non-governmental organizations, etc.) or individuals making up a particular stakeholder group (e.g. members of the local community)."

The need to feed an established talc mill from a crude are source located closer to the mill prompted the drilling in 1986 of a previously mapped talc-carbonate deposit. This talc-bearing rock had never been considered as a potential source of crude talc are because of the high carbonate content and other deleterious minerals that were observed in outcrops. Selective mining, in-pit grade control and creative processing has allowed this deposit to be developed into an orebody. By definition, an orebody has to be a source of positive cash flow. With industrial minerals, this is determined as much by market acceptance as by are tenor.

Engineers at the Freeman United Coal Min¬ing Company, located in West Frankfort, Illinois, have been using a computerized production planning and maintenance reporting system, which have been designed exclusively for underground coal mining. This paper will explain a dynamic graphical simulation and computerized time study system that has been used to design and evaluate underground production systems for optimizing productivity. Also with the aid of customized software, detailed records on changeable components of underground equipment, including the vendor's name, date installed, operating and maintenance hours, etc., have helped Management to select the best available components for their equipment. The MPASS System, Mine Performance Analysis Simulation System, developed through a cooperative agreement with Freeman United, Ketron Inc., and the U. S. Department of Energy utilizes new methods to analyze and design production systems in underground coal mines. The MPASS System is a menu-driven user oriented system of interactive computer programs, which form five major subsystems. The subsystems: 1. Simulation 2. Time Study 3. Mine Background Reports 4. Large-scale groundwater withdrawals are necessary to depressurize a confined aquifer system allowing the dry open-pit mining of the overlying phosphate ore. The extent of the existing and planned groundwater development led to the establishment by the State of North Carolina of Capacity Use Area No. l. Groundwater use in the Capacity Use Area is regulated by a permitting system. A two-dimensional finite-difference ground- water flow model was developed for North Carolina Phosphate Corporation. The aim of the model is to aid the Corporation in matters relating to permitting by serving as a predictive tool. The model can be used to project regional water level impacts resulting from various scenarios of depressurization pumping.

As the flaws in the population balance model (PBM) comminution model are examined more deeply, further errors and problems were discovered. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations was used to solve the dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. The fact that the PBM model equation Inverse Problem is degenerate or underspecified is demonstrated. Multiple solutions to the same PBM equations are provided. It is shown that there is no unique solution to the Inverse Problem unless additional constraints are provided or assumptions are made such as the Arbiter-Bhrany normalization assumption. The severity of the non-uniqueness problem for dynamic grinding is demonstrated. Each solution to a dynamic PBM, while giving the same prediction for a given grinding time interval, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. Actual experimental grinding data was assessed to determine the functionality of mill selection and breakage functions.

"The city of Denver, CO has experienced extreme growth in the past decade, with the population of the city topping more than 700,000 people in 2018. The current storm water drainage system was put in place in the early 1900s and has not been able to keep up with the growth of the city.When it rains north and east of the city, the runoff goes toward the South Platte River. With the dense population and sometimes severe thunderstorms in the summer, the city has experienced significant flooding that not only endangers lives of residents, but some of the storms have caused millions of dollars of property damage.The Platte to Park Hill Project is a $298-million nearterm, four-phase solution to the flooding that includes the Globeville landing outfall; an open drainage project in the Cole neighborhood in north Denver; an area for temporary water detention and another temporary water detention in Park Hill.The largest and most complex phase of the project is the Globeville landing outfall — a $70-million box culvert project that includes a pair of 157-m (515-ft) long, 243-cm (96-in.) diameter storm water tunnels that pass beneath a busy rail yard with 17 tracks for the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and two Regional Transportation District (RTD) commuter rail tracks. The tunnels, which were installed parallel to a pair of existing 243-cm (96-in.) tunnels, were designed by Brierley & Associates as a client of Merrick & Company for the City & County of Denver, and Bradshaw Construction constructed the one-pass tunnels.From the start, it was evident that the tunneling portion of the project would be the most challenging because of the rail yards.“It’s a little bit more complicated because the railroads have such tight restrictions for settlement,” said Rebecca Brock, Brierley’s project manager. “We had a lot of meetings with Union Pacific and RTD to figure out what are prescribed versus tolerable settlements.”“The portion extending beyond the UPRR under the RTD rails was challenging, as RTD is new to tunnel installations under its tracks,” said Lester Bradshaw, president of Bradshaw Construction. “The RTD tracks employed a unique foundation of continuous concrete with integral raised concrete ties on rubber bushings. Minimizing settlement to these tracks was a critical requirement.”"
