Talc, when it can be isolated as a pure mineral, has a composition of 63.36% SiO2, 31.89% MgO, and 4.75% H,O. However, as a commercial commodity less than half of all talc sold has a purity exceeding 95%. Nevertheless, impure talc products find a multitude of uses and few substitutes in many industrial applications. Minerals commonly associated with and sold together in talcose mixtures are chlorite, dolomite, mica, magnesite, and tremolite. Steatite was originally a mineralogical term applied to pure talc. Today steatite usually denotes a high-talc ceramic body used as an electrical insulator, and the talc used in such applications is known as steatitic talc. Steatitic talc generally is found in massive, high- purity form and in the past was machined directly into electrical parts, which rarely is done today. Impure varieties of massive or block talc are still commonly termed soapstone. Soft massive talc, suitable for crayon manufacture, has been referred to as French chalk. It has been common practice to discuss talc, soapstone, and pyrophyllite under the same general heading. In the case of soap- stone and talc this is natural, since many different types of platy, soft minerals exhibiting a high degree of lubricity (commonly referred to as slip) have been grouped together and called soapstone or talc. Further, there are mineralogical relationships between pyrophyllite and montmorillonite and between talc and hectorite. Thus, talc and pyrophyllite are sometimes referred to as clay minerals. When finely divided talc or pyrophyllite are combined with water in proportions to make a slurry, the end product does have the appearance of a clay-water mixture. Soapstone for utensils and ornaments was mined by prehistoric Native Americans on Santa Catalina Island, CA. In the mid- 1800s soapstone from deposits along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains was used by white settlers as building and ornamental stone and for the linings and foundations of furnaces (Anon., 1956). Previous to 1916 the annual recorded production in California did not exceed 1.8 kt. From 1912 to 1918, however, output rose sharply when the Talc City, Western, and Silver Lake mines were put into operation. From 1916 to 1935, the state's annual output of talc was in the range of 8.2 to 18.2 kt. There was another increase in the mid-1930s, when the use of talc in wall tile grew rapidly. In California the production of talc grew to 57.2 kt in 1943. The post-war building boom helped California's production to grow to 108.9 kt in 1951. Production stood at 149.8 kt in 1968, 13 1.6 kt in 1969, 167.9 kt in 1970, and 140.7 kt in 1972. In the mid-seventies and early eighties, however, California's talc production declined to approximately 20 kt in 1992 due to reserves exhaustion and the material's tremolite content, which raised significant product liability concerns at the time. Talc mining in New York State dates from about 1878, when a Colonel Palmer and associates opened the first commercial talc mine on the Nelson Freeman farm near Talcville. In 1893 this operation was sold to International Pulp Co., which changed its name to International Talc Co. in 1944. The company was acquired by R.T. Vanderbilt Co., Inc., in 1974. A new talc operation, Gouverneur Talc Co., owned by R.T. Vanderbilt Co., began operations near Balmat, NY, in 1948. The initial capacity of the processing plant was 180 tpd (Gillingham, 1950). Subsequent expansions have increased capacity to more than 725 tpd. Talc was discovered in the area of Johnson, VT, in 1902, marking the birth of the Vermont talc industry. American Minerals Co. initiated plant operations at Johnson in 1904. MagnesiaTalc Co. opened a plant at Waterbury, VT, in 1913 (Burmeister, 1963, Trauffer, 1964) and acquired American Minerals Co. in 1923. The Waterbury mine had a long history as a producer of talc crayons. Eastern Magnesia Talc Co. was formed in 1924 by the merger of Eastern Talc Co. and Magnesia Talc Co. In 1956 Vermont Mineral Co., with a talc mine at Hammondsville, VT, was also acquired. A new plant was then built at Gassetts to produce roofing products. In order to produce high grade products for several markets, Eastern Magnesia Talc Co. began operating a modem froth flotation plant at West Windsor, VT, in 1964. The ore was provided by the Hammondsville mine. This operation, known as Windsor Minerals, Inc., continued from 1972 to 1989 as a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson Co. In 1989 Cyprus Minerals Co. acquired Vermont Talc, Inc. and Windsor Minerals, Inc.. thus consolidating the talc mining and processing operations at Hamm, Windham, Johnson, Chester, Ludlow, West Windsor, Troy, and Reading, VT, under one ownership. As the result of Cyprus' sale of its worldwide talc assets to the RTZ Group in 1992, its US talc operations are now part of Luzenac America, Inc.

Approximately 1,390 t (44.7 million ounces) of gold have been produced in South Dakota since 1875. South Dakota's mining laws attempt to strike a balance between economic development and environmental protection by promoting mining as an industry while requiring prevention of pollution and reclamation of affected lands to a beneficial use. The mining laws have evolved since their inception in 1971, especially in response to gold mining. The laws have remained flexible to meet changing regulatory needs. Gold production has continued relatively unabated, even in the face of public scrutiny, two mining moratoriums, and isolated environmental problems. The department's system of "one-stop-shopping" for environmental permits streamlines the permit process, fosters quick resolutions to compliance problems, and helps keep enforcement actions out of the courts. Specific case histories at heap leach mines within the Black Hills are presented.

When economic times are tough, as they are now in mining, it can feel like you need to choose between safety and cost control. Leading edge companies know that it is excellence at both that provides the best performance. FLUID POWER SYSTEMS Fluid power systems are ubiquitous in mining – longwall systems, continuous miners, drills, haul trucks and excavators, etc. And fluid power systems are getting more powerful and using higher pressures to move greater volumes and achieve higher productivity. Average operating pressures in mobile equipment has been rising to 450 bar (6,500 psi) over the last decade. With increased system pressure comes ever increasing levels of stored energy. Stored energy that, if released in an uncontrolled fashion, can do tremendous harm to people and things.Fluid power systems are composed of pipe, flexible hoses, pumps, valves and actuators. They are filled with fluid (mineral oil or fire-resistant) to transmit power to where it’s needed for performing work. With time and use fittings can loosen, component performance diminishes and hoses wear and tear. In hostile environments, like coal mining, hydraulic hoses can fail in as little as 2 years according to DGUV (umbrella association of German Accident Insurers), maybe sooner in some particularly challenging environments. FLUID POWER SYSTEM SAFETY While appearing simple and benign on the surface, fluid power systems, particularly such systems on mobile equipment, have many potential hazards. Hazards that most workers aren’t aware of – particularly young, new hires. And those hazards that can quickly turn deadly. During the past couple of years, including at last year’s SME Conference, I talked to a wide variety of mining people about high pressure fluid injection injuries. Some people, often with little or no field experience, never heard of it. But, people with mine operations / maintenance experience were almost always aware of such injuries.Some had even seen it happen right in front of them. But most claimed it didn’t happen all that often. It just wasn’t seen as a problem!"

The purpose of this section is to demonstrate the development of a method that we believe can be used for simulating and predicting mine water inflow. It will also show how important it is for personnel who model mine water inflow to have considerable experience with this subject, and with the conversion of hydrogeologic frameworks to conceptual models. Several of the models described previously are said to be three dimensional. However, closer examination reveals that there is considerable limitation in the variation possible in the third dimension. A true three-dimensional analysis would require a very large program. Therefore, it seems more reasonable to develop a procedure by which information from a two-dimensional model can be used for analysis of a three-dimensional problem. For a vertical mine shaft this is relatively easy because most two-dimensional models have an option for axisymmetric flow. If it can be assumed that axisymmetry exists about the centerline of the shaft it can be modeled easily as has been illustrated previously. For a horizontal drift or tunnel the analysis is not nearly as straightforward. However, the flow can be divided into two parts as indicated in Fig. 59. Part 1 considers the flow into the side of the drift while part 2 considers the flow into the end of the drift. To calculate the flow rate into the entire drift from the unsteady flow into a unit length the instantaneous flow per unit length may be integrated over the total length of the shaft. This procedure is shown in Fig. 60. The radial flow through any incremental length of the shaft is q. The total flow rate, Q, into the drift at any particular time is given by: The discharge q is a function of the time during which a particular segment has been draining that is dependent on the location x. In other words, a location at x = 0 has been draining during the entire time of expansion while a segment at x = L has only started to drain. The reliable performance of the coal reclaim system is essential to the continued availability of a coal-fired electric generating unit. The control of fugitive coal dust within the areas housing the reclaiming equipment is necessary not only to minimize maintenance and clean-up costs, but is also a safety and health consideration. This paper describes the reclaim system control and dust suppression systems as initially installed, the shortcomings of these systems and the steps eventually taken to correct these shortcomings.

Highwall mining is a mining method to extract coal from a final boundary in opencut mining, trench mining or contour mining. This boundary may have been reached because of economic constraints (economic strip limit) or geographic constraints, such as spoil heaps and rivers. Coal is mined from visible, horizontal, or near-horizontal coal seams by making rectangular, parallel, unsupported drives with an unmanned cutterhead and coal transport system. This is controlled from a mining unit, or launch frame, positioned outside the drive, in front of the highwall. Removal of overburden is not required or is limited to small quantities only.

"Location: The Menominee district has been described geologically in several units, because the known iron-bearing formations of the larger region are not a really connected. From the commercial and mining standpoint, however, the district em¬braces, all that territory extending from a point about five miles east of Vulcan to a point a few miles west of Iron River, an east-west distance of about fifty miles, and from a line about two miles south of Vulcan to one ten miles north of Crystal Falls, a north-south distance of about thirty-five miles. This area is largely in the State of Michigan, but includes more than two hundred square miles in Florence County, Wisconsin. The chief towns of the district are Vulcan, Iron Mountain, Iron River, and Crystal Falls, in Michigan, and . Florence in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin portion of the district has not produced a large portion of the output of the area.History: The earliest reports of iron ore in the Menominee district were made by J. W. Foster and S. W. Hill, who conducted a geological exploration from Lake Superior to Green Bay in the fall of 1848. It is a remarkable fact that in spite of their plain statements regarding their discoveries, these state¬ments were apparently forgotten for a period of nearly twenty years. Foster states that ""about two miles southeast of the lower falls (of the Twin Falls on the Menominee River) near Sec. 30, T. 40 N., R. 30 W. there is a large bed of specular iron ore associated with the talcose and argillaceous slates. It makes its appearance on the north side of the Lake and can be traced a mile and a half in length and in places is exposed one hundred feet in width."""

"Mineral deposits require substantial amounts of energy to transport and be processed into usable form and, as such, present a real processing challenge in that the deposits are never homogeneous and orebody compositional characteristics are all over the map. Extracting the desired mineral(s) from the deposit at sufficient profit margin, despite severe fluctuations in market price, requires process automation architecture capable of supporting an integrated enterprise solution. Such an architecture will encompasses the activities of individuals, process units, process areas, plant level activities, mine management and business planning, and accounting systems. Key to the automation process is the aspect of value generation. This article brings together the various requirements for the automation of a mining enterprise and presents the different aspects of how to obtain value across the entire mining operation.Minerals’ processing sites are historically long lived, with 20-year life-of-mine not uncommon and 75 years not unheard of. Considering that hardware technology advancements are introduced every six months, or less, it is prudent to select process automation systems that adhere to “open” industrial standards versus proprietary based systems. In the minerals processing industry, the key to survival is driving the cost of production per unit volume to the lowest possible level and provide enough profit to sustain operations. Control system architecture and business information technology are rapidly becoming important tools in the quest for productivity. Getting key dynamic business performance information at the right time to the right person or process unit is crucial to successfully achieving corporate goals. The process automation architecture selected must, therefore, be able to integrate to the various networking enterprises and business systems.The mining industry is generally known as an extractive industry that is physically oriented with respect to operations and the activities in which workers engage. Large numbers of people performing manual tasks in difficult surroundings, produce variable outputs. But times are changing – and so are industry best practices. While the nature of work still consists of activities such as ore extraction, ore movement, ore concentration, refinement and logistics, automation innovations are starting to change the nature of many of the production steps. The industry has transitioned from requiring more physical activities by workers to more information management, automated control and collaboration within the operation. Humans are good at situational intervention and nonlinear reasoning and do best when empowered with an overall production perspective. Machines and automation are good at repetitive functions, steady state operation, and managing transitions. Thus, a combination of advanced technology solutions, reliable and useful information and full human contributions are necessary to mining operations for value generation."

Due to special job or client requirements, there will always be some variation in the philosophy of organizing and controlling construction under a project management contract. In typical cases, however, some standard procedures apply. Controls on a construction project are best described only in general terms. They should apply to the total job and can be most effective only when all pieces of the job organization fit together to support a control system for the entire project. Controls are more than a system of reports, schedules, and tabulations-they are the result of an integrated organization dedicated to getting a job done on time and within budget. One of the most important aspects of project control is the construction organization. It must include the right people, facilities, and site equipment, as well as the authority to do what's necessary to accomplish the work. This should be set up to function with as little involvement from off-site or the home office as possible. However, the jobsite construction group must work within established policies and guidelines and is subject to continuous off-site or home office monitoring. In other words, the job-site leaders need to have a clear definition of their responsibility, their authority, and the necessary people and equipment to make things happen. "Underground construction poses certain challenges for all parties involved because the actual ground conditions are often unpredictable. Highly complex projects like tunnel construction are affected by various uncertainties. To address this complexity, the construction contract has to be flexible enough to be adapted to the actual conditions (e.g. divergent ground conditions, work delays). However, the adaptation of a tunnel construction contract does not guarantee the absence of a margin of interpretation. The perfect construction contract is an illusion because ex ante statements of the actual ground conditions are not feasible. This paper will discuss contractual parameters that must be considered in order to enable an effective adaptation of the contract during excavation. It is therefore necessary to discuss the following topics: decision-making competence, variable remuneration, fair-risk allocation, value engineering and partnering between client and contractor. INTRODUCTION Thinking of tunnel construction processes, engineers’ first (or at least second) association is about ground conditions. When constructing under the surface, the project is directly related to the ground conditions; however, ground conditions are known fairly well in advance. The estimated conditions can be the same or can also differ from the existing ones. A clear view of the conditions is possible only by driving through the section. What Hoek calls “Geological unpredictability which is guaranteed to provide some surprises in even the simplest tunnelling job” is, in addition to contractual issues, one of two critical aspects of modern tunneling (Hoek 1982). Almost no research tries to figure out, what flexibility in this context means and how to approach it in the contracts. Papers dealing with the New Austrian Tunnel Method (NATM) pose some principles to meet the requests for flexibility (cf. Austrian Society for Geomechanics 2011). However, it remains unclear how to create contracts in order to make them “flexible” enough to react to divergent ground conditions."

California's annual production of >11 million tons of cement, at a value of over $640 million, comes from eight companies, which operate 11 plants. Cement is California's second most important mineral commodity, representing 25% of its total annual mineral production. Although most of the cement produced is consumed within the state, current export locales include the Pacific Northwest, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. An enumeration of the components required to produce cement is deceptively simple: calcium oxide (65%), silica (20%), alumina (4-5%), iron (3-4%), and calcium sulfate (4%) as a retardant admixture. The last, and most expensive, ingredient in cement manufacture is energy. Detrimental materials in cement mixes include excess .magnesium, alkalis, heavy metals, sulfur, and other volatiles. Each of the 11 cement plants in California requires a unique chemical solution of combined raw materials to produce a uniform product: portland cement. The geologist proposing solutions for the additive raw materials in cement manufacture must have a thorough knowledge of a particular cement plant's needs. In the California cement market, keeping the costs of additive raw materials down is one way to also stay competitive, and using a combination of natural and waste materials as additive raw materials allows cement producers to stay competitive.

"Electric and hydraulic shovels are the dominant loading machinery in surface mining operations. Despite their critical role in production and their high capital and operating costs, no reliable and comprehensive quantitative performance metric is available. In this paper, a stochastic shovel effectiveness (SSE) measure is proposed for the purpose of quantifying the performance effectiveness of these shovels. The SSE is based on the widely used method of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) in the manufacturing industry. The OEE measures the performance effectiveness of equipment by multiplying its mechanical availability, utilization and production quality. In manufacturing processes, quality rate is the ratio of the total number of products minus the number of defective products – equivalent to the number of acceptable products – to the total number of products. The SSE similarly uses the mechanical-availability and utilization terms, but instead of quality rate it uses a new parameter named bucket rate.The variability or randomness of the input data, that is, availability, utilization and bucket rate, are further incorporated into the SSE, and a final stochastic SSE distribution is derived in the form of a probability density function. One hydraulic and one electric shovel in a surface mining operation were selected to test the validity of the proposed method. The SSE scores for the two shovels, operating continuously for one year, were derived and compared. As with the OEE, the three-parameter SSE method yielded more representative results for overall performance measurement than a single-parameter approach. Using Monte Carlo simulation, a three-parameter Weibull and a normal distribution were derived for quantifying the overall effectiveness of hydraulic and electric shovels, respectively. As a decision aid, the proposed methodology promises to render a more informative tool than traditional metrics for mine equipment maintenance and management."

Preliminary design is underway for a new Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) project that will ensure one of America’s most reliable water systems by providing continued, reliable water service to existing and future customers. The Horizon Lateral is a $1.6 billion water transmission pipeline that includes 7–10 miles of 108-inch finished diameter rock and soft-ground tunnels. The tunnels will traverse volcanic rock in or around the McCullough Mountain Range and the surrounding alluvial basin. The tunneling community will find relevance in hearing about this critical infrastructure project from a leading wholesale water utility owner with a proven track record for on-time, collaborative projects.

INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been a trend in the direction of larger drilling equipment and larger diameter blastholes. Although this change has improved the efficiencies and reduced the costs in many operations, it has increased the potential for damage to underground openings. In addition, in many instances one now finds more sophisticated delicate instruments, automated control facilities, and a large variety of structures in proximity to blasting activity. The combined effect of larger-scale blasting activity and its proximity to various features of interest is such that there is an increased need for a more refined analysis of blasting effects and their control. BLASTING EFFECTS ON ROCK SURFACES The Breakage Mechanism In order to develop techniques for controlled blasting, one must first understand the features of the mechanisms by which blasting causes rock breakage to occur. These features have not been easy to demonstrate, mostly due to the difficulty in making tests and observations at the high stress levels and short time durations involved. When an explosive charge is detonated, the material surrounding the charge is subjected to a nearly instantaneous, very high pressure [on the order of 1.4 to 13.8 GPa (0.2 to 2.0 X 106 psi), depending on the explosive]. If the charge is coupled to "average" rock, this pressure will pulverize the surrounding rock for a distance on the order of 1 to 3 charge radii in hard rock, and to a greater distance in softer rock (this is also dependent on the type of explosive). As the pressure wave passes into the rock, high tangential stresses cause radial cracks to appear, and the nearly discontinuous radial stress zones gen¬erated by the shock front may cause tangential cracks to appear. The extent of these cracks depends on the energy available in the explosive, how quickly the energy is transmitted to the rock, and the strength properties of the rock. The discontinuous shock front is quickly dis¬sipated, but the expanding gases generate a longer-acting pressure. A compressive pulse travels to the nearest face or internal rock boundary where it is reflected in tension. The tensile strengths of most rocks are roughly 40 to %o of their compressive strengths, so the rock may now fail in tension whereas it may have been able to support the diminished compressive phase without failure. The ten¬sile deflection typically produces a failure described as tensile slabbing or scabbing. Laboratory experiments and field experience have pretty well established that several mechanisms are involved. These include (1) the classical case of tensile parallel slabbing when the pressure pulse is reflected at a free surface; (2) failure under quasi-static compressive loading (the shape is normally irregular due to discontinuities in the rock); (3) radial cracking under the action of tangential stresses at the periphery of the expanding pressure pulse; (4) peripheral cracking at the discontinuous shock front which is quickly dissipated; and (5) additional mass shifting due to the venting of the explosive gases. The first three items have received much attention in the laboratory and the literature. The complex effects of gas venting are difficult to test in the laboratory because of the difficulty in reproducing the many weak planes and discontinuities typical of most field conditions, which play such a prominent role in determining the behavior of the rock mass subjected to blasting. Unfortunately, gas venting effects can be pro¬jected to significant distances under certain field conditions, and are sometimes difficult to control. It is not unusual for gas venting to be the overriding factor in determining the final geometric shape and physical condition of the finished excavation. Sources of Damage For the purposes of this discussion, damage includes not only the breaking and rupturing of rock beyond the desired limits of excavation but also an unwanted loosening, dislocation, and disturbance of the rock mass the integrity of which one wishes to preserve (such as mine pillars, underground openings, etc.). The sources of damage include, of course, all those physical features of the rock breakage mechanism. Each of these effects must be limited to the desired zone of breakage and excavation if the integrity of the remaining rock mass is to remain undiminished. The primary zone of rock breakage usually can be controlled in the normal process of field experimentation to determine proper charge sizes and location for primary excavation. However, it frequently happens that there is damage from sources which are more difficult to account for in the design process, which are often overlooked. These are (1) the overbreak due to poor drilling control, (2) dislocation of rock (mass shifting) due to venting of explosive gases, and (3) loosening or dislocation due to the influence of seismic waves (ground vibrations). CONTROL OF ROCK BREAKAGE Importance of Geometry In studying the rock mass and blasting design con¬siderations, it is important to keep in mind the geometric relationships among charge size, shape, and position, and the physical features of the rock mass to be preserved. The features of principal interest are the external shape and position of the rock mass relative to blasting, and the position and attitude of any weak planes in the rock mass. The Sequence of Blasting and Excavation Events Unfortunately, there are too many times when the task of preserving delicate rock is considered hopeless, and because of this attitude, no further effort is ex¬pended towards caution or control. In such cases there is often a failure to recognize the importance of the se¬quence of the procedures. Attention to this can greatly reduce unwanted effects at minimum cost. "Solvent extraction of copper pregnant solution (PLS) obtained from ammonium peroxodisulfate assisted leach was modeled using response surface methodology. Mixing speed, pH, reagent concentration and organic to aqueous (O/A) ratio were selected for testing. A pitched blade mixer was used in the experiment. Mixer speed contributed significantly to copper extraction significant, while pH had minimal effect on copper extraction. The response model developed has an R2 = 0.97 and Adeq precision of 28.3. A parallel kinetic comparing study using a straight blade Rushton turbine in a turbulent regime of mixing showed no difference (p-value =0.308) between peroxodisulfate assisted leach PLS and conventional ferric/sulfuric acid leach PLS- the power draw data support this conclusion. INTRODUCTION High arsenic chalcopyrite concentrates are a problem to the smelters all over the world due to high arsenic gas emissions during smelting. Therefore leaching is often the alternative for extracting the copper in these concentrates if dilution with low arsenic concentrate is not possible. High-pressure autoclave leaching is used. Alternatively, the use of stronger oxidants such as peroxodisulfate has been proposed [16, 18]. There is a concern brought up by the hydrometallurgy community about the faith of the organic extracting reagent coming into contact with stronger oxidant residue in the pregnant leach solution (PLS) and hence the efficiency of such extraction process. This work, therefore, looks to answer such concerns. PLS generated from leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate with the peroxodisulfate ion was used in this solvent extraction experiment. Australia is the largest exporter of coking and thermal coal to the international market. This market has required that the coal being presented to the customer has a particular level and consistency of quality. In this context, the Australian industry has developed coal preparation practices that allow this criteria to be met while maximising the recovery of coal from the resource. This has required on- going developments in both coarse and fine coal cleaning technology over the past 30 years. Coal flotation has undergone a number of developments with regard to maximising recovery from the overall plant circuit. This includes innovative flotation circuits (split feed), methods of enhancing the use of reagents and control of pH. During the 1990s, there have been major changes in flotation as practised in Australian coal preparation plants. Columns have become the preferred technology for both greenfield developments and plant upgrades. This paper will outline the above developments with a number of plant examples and the reasoning that has driven the change. The ongoing research that is being carried out on new cells to optimise the overall fine coal circuit will also be discussed.

As conveyor systems continue to improve in reliability due to improved design, installation, maintenance, and operation, one of the more common modes of failure is the rubber carry cover being abraded away to the tension member. Various types of abrasion are discussed as well as current laboratory methods for measuring wear. New lab methods to mimic types of abrasion in service are presented and data from current and improved rubber covers will be presented. Actual wear performance of current and new cover compounds in multiple applications (coal, limestone, granite) will be compared to the new lab test methods and cost benefits shown.

In December 1983 the author undertook an investigation in east Texas which was organized to learn the feasibility of applying geophysical techniques over shallow lignite deposits. The work embraced experimental high resolution seismic reflection and offset Wenner resisitivity sounds over three 1/4 to 1/2 mile test sections. This site also was sponsored by Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) and a consortium headed by North American Coal Corporation. The principal objective of this investigation was to learn whether the aforementioned geophysical techniques could be applied over shallow lignite deposits (i.e. located at approximately 100' to 300' in depth) and consequently provide structural and stratigraphic information useful for resource and reserve characterization. A secondary objective was to determine if these same techniques could disclose the nature of the overburden and the distribution of ground water therein.

The Marysvale volcanic field of west-central Utah contains large areas of argillically altered rocks (fig. 1) that, in turn, enclose smaller areas of fine-grained, medium-grade, replacement alunite deposits and coarsely crystalline, high-grade vein-type alunite deposits. The largest replacement alunite deposits are [ ] located peripheral to a 23-m.y.-old monzonite stock called the Central Intrusive (fig. 1). The deposits formed in near-surface, highly oxidizing environments at the tops of hydrothermal plumes that were spaced irregularly around the stock. The deposits are horizontally zoned from alunitic cores through kaolinitic to propylitic envelopes. Vertically, characteristic alteration minerals progress from a pyrite-propylitic alteration assemblage at the base, upward through alunitic, jarositic, and hematitic assemblages to a flooded silica cap as shown on figure 2. The silica caps are cut by hydrothermal explosion breccias. d34Sso4 values of + 11.5 to + 15.4 permil indicate that sulfur in the hydrothermal plume was derived from underlying Mesozoic evaporites. The sharp upward transition from pyrite- propylite to alunite probably marks the paleowater table, and the top of the flooded silica cap represents the paleoground surface. Basin-Range extensional tectonism began shortly after alteration, and buried the replacement alunite deposits in basins beneath sediments eroded from uplands. The deposits were only recently exhumed.

The development of highly selective mineral processing reagents, which are not merely metal-ion specific, but specific to the particular mineral surface structure, is essential for the exploitation of relatively more difficult-to-process ore deposits, in particular for the separation amongst minerals having the same constituent ion. Both the choice of the functional group as well as the molecular architecture of the reagent determine its selectivity. Several examples are presented in this paper to illustrate the concepts of structure specificity and molecular recognition at mineral surfaces - the concepts crucial to the advancement of the emerging science of reagents design. Recent advances made in the understanding of molecular interactions involved in the synthesis of biomineralized materials are discussed so as to delineate the utility of this approach in the design of selective reagents for mineral separation.
