"INTRODUCTION Site location and history The Holden Mine is a former underground copper mine that was developed and operated by the Howe Sound Mining Company (Howe Sound) from 1938 to 1957. The mine is located in north-central Washington State, U.S., near Lake Chelan in the area shown as Holden Village in Figure 1. Although Rio Tinto never owned or operated the mine, they are managing and funding a several hundred million dollar clean-up to prevent future water and soil contamination and to reclaim the former mine site under the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Superfund process. The former mine included an onsite mill and a nearby housing complex for the miners. Howe Sound developed the mine as a series of near-horizontal drifts and tunnels, interspersed with stopes and shafts that connect different mine levels underground. The tunnels that were excavated to develop the mine total nearly 100 km in length.During development of the underground workings, Howe Sound removed more than 230,000 cubic meters (m3) of waste rock from the tunnels and deposited this material in two waste rock piles. Ore was processed from the mine in the onsite mill to produce a copper concentrate that was shipped off site for smelting. Roughly 10 million tonnes of tailings were produced as a by-product of the milling operation, most of which were deposited in three large impoundments (Tailings Piles 1, 2 and 3) directly south of and adjacent to Railroad Creek. Howe Sound closed the mine in 1957. In 1961, the property was transferred to Holden Village, Inc. (Holden Village), a not-for-profit corporation that maintains a year-round community and operates an interdenominational religious retreat in the former miners’ town. With the exception of the patented private land, the remainder of the Site is on National Forest lands and is administered by the U.S. Forest Service. The mine is remote. It is only accessible by boat or float plane from Chelan, Washington, up Lake Chelan to Lucerne, nearly 40 km. Vehicle access from Lucerne to the mine is provided through a 17.5-km-long winding gravel road that climbs 640 meters in elevation. The general site features are shown in Figure 2. Physical setting The Holden Mine is located on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountain Range at an elevation between 975 and 1,050 m above mean sea level. Holden Mine was developed adjacent to Railroad Creek, which lies in a glacial U-shaped valley carved into the igneous and metamorphic bedrock with steep-sided slopes (Figure 2)."

The increasing cost of developing new mines and the need to mine more marginal deposits have led mining companies to use more sophisticated estimation methods such as kriging. But until recently, coal mining companies have shown little or no interest in these techniques. However, the stringent quality controls which are now placed on coal have led to a surge in interest in improved estimation methods. This can be seen from the -, number of research projects by private companies and governmental agencies on the application of geostatistics to coal reserve estimation. At present, most of these programs are centered on the problem of estimating the tonnage and the average grade (i.e. ash percent, sulphur content, calorific value, etc.) of the coal in-situ. See, for example, Sabourin (1975), Woods (1976, 1979), Pauncz and Nixon (1979) and Armstrong (1980). These studies show that the established techniques of linear geostatistics can be applied successfully to coal deposits. The study by Woods is particularly interesting because he had access to the actual production figures as well as the initial sample data from the no 2 seam in the Greenside Colliery owned by the Anglo-American Corporation. He showed that the estimates obtained by kriging were consistently closer to the actual production figures than those given by three other estimation methods. This confirms the superiority of kriging as a method of estimating block values for coal. Another advantage of geostatistics is that it can be used to determine the optimal spacing between drill holes. An example of this is given by Armstrong for the coking coal deposit in the Bowen Basin, Australia.

Lignite and subbituminous coals are utilized essentially as mined without beneficiation. Most of the present production is used to generate electric power and the major problem in this use is ash deposition on fireside surfaces. The preparation at existing mines involves principally crushing and screening operations. Blending of production from different locations within the mine is practiced in several mines to control ash composition. Drying and oil treatment for freezeproofing, of lignite are used to a limited extent during winter. Future processing may involve both washing and drying operations to alter ash composition by ion exchange and upgrade the low-rank fuels to higher heating values. Research has been initiated to determine the feasibility of such processing.

Cortez Gold Mine (C.G.M.) is located in Lander County, Nevada, approximately 80 miles southwest of Elko, Nevada. It is accessed via Nevada State Highway 306 south from Interstate 80. This operation is a joint venture between Placer Dome U. S. Inc. (60% operator) and Kennecott Corporation (40%). The claims which supply oxide and refractory ore feed to the Cortez milling facility are located in both Lander and Eureka Counties. These include the Cortez and Horse Canyon deposits all operated by C.G.M. Joint Venture. Other deposits outside the C.G.M. claim area include; Fire Creek, Buckhorn, Gold Bar and Tonkin Springs. These deposits all occur along the Battle Mountain/Eureka Trend.

The Permian Salado Formation of west Texas and southeastern New Mexico is composed of halite and subordinate amounts of anhydrite, clay and potassium and magnesium-bearing evaporite minerals. Aspects of the geochemistry of the Salado Formation have been investigated through studies of the stratigraphy, mineral assemblages, textures and minor element content of the salts. These studies provide information on the origin of the evaporites when combined with data on equilibria in saturated salt solutions. The principal potash ore zone in the district is composed essentially of halite (NaC1) and sylvite (KC1). Data on the color, bromide content, and proportions of halite and sylvite suggest that this simple assemblage is the product of a series of replacements rather than primary precipitation. The bromide content of the salts also indicates that the brine which precipitated the Salado Formation was derived from the dissolution of older evaporites rather than the simple evaporation of sea water.

"In Part I, Gibbs’ phase rule was applied to mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams for the Cu-As-S-H2O system. The diagrams were generated using the stoichiometry of enargite as a basis. In this study, the calculations were expanded to cover the stoichiometries of three other Cu-As-S minerals – tennantite, sinnerite and lautite – and compared with enargite. Stability regions within the resulting EH-pH diagrams were found to change with stoichiometry such that a particular mineral would predominate if its stoichiometry was used in the calculation. Solution speciation was also found to vary, with thioarsenate being the best example. This stoichiometric effect helps to explain results reported in the literature and would be difficult to realize if it were not for mass-balanced calculations. IntroductionA comprehensive thermodynamic review has been conducted on the aqueous copper-arsenic-sulfur (Cu- As-S) system (Gow et al., 2014, 2015a, 2016b; Gow, Huang and Young, 2016c). Data on the free energies of more than 100 species were collected from various authors, and thermodynamic databases collated to produce mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams using the thermodynamic equilibrium calculation software STABCAL (Huang, 2014). The full database is listed and discussed in Gow et al. (2015a). Diagrams were generated for enargite and confirmed with Raman spectroscopy using bulk mineral electrodes in order to identify reactions spectroelectrochemically. Theoretical calculations agreed well with the experimental results under alkaline conditions (Gow et al., 2015a), acid conditions (Gow et al., 2014) and alkaline sulfide leaching conditions (Gow et al., 2015b).In the present study, additional mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams were generated by changing the Cu-As-S stoichiometry from enargite (Cu3AsS4) to tennantite (Cu12As4S13), sinnerite (Cu6As4S9) and lautite (CuAsS). Regions for the thermodynamically stable species were shown to change with the four different mineral compositions. Potential leach conditions, both for co-dissolution and selective dissolution techniques, were examined for differences in predominant species according to changing copper-to-arsenic ratios, sulfur compositions and sulfur oxidation states."

Quartz is the second most widely used electronic material, with approximately 3,000 tons of single crystals used each year. Virtually all of this material is synthetic; grown with a technique called hydrothermal growth. We will review the basics of hydrothermal growth, the feedstocks for these crystals, and the challenges to improving the growth process. We will also review the processing of these crystals, the markets and applications where they are used, and the global outlook for these markets.

The Cyprus Pinos Altos mine exploits small high grade Cu-Zn skarns using trackless equipment and a modified room and pillar mining method. The skarns occur around early Laramide diorite and quartz monzonite stocks. Stage I calc-silicates and sphalerite developed in the Pennsylvanian Magdalena Group between diorite and the marble front and were partially incorporated into a diffuse breccia body. Stage II calc-silicates and Cu sulfides formed in the contact zone with quartz monzonite and along NE-SW faults, overprinting stage I rocks and breccia. The result is a geologically complex deposit formed in two distinct pulses.

This paper is primarily concerned with the exploration for massive sulphide orebodies. In a discussion of this type, it seems appropriate to establish a few definitions so that all parties may consider the same beast and its habitat. First, the term "massive sulphides", as used here, not only denotes a body of mineralized rock containing in excess of 50% sulphides by volume, but a mass of sulphides that respond as a conductor to the electromagnetic (EM) systems currently in use in exploration. "Disseminated sulphides" refer to all of those sulphide occurrences that respond to the Induced Polarization (IP) geophysical methods most commonly in use in porphyry copper exploration. This latter definition may also include the disseminated sulphide halos so frequently found associated with massive mineralization as well as banded and stringer sulphide mineralization. It is plain to see that these two end members of our definitions can easily blend into each other. The term "volcanogenic" refers here to any and all geologic processes that have their origin in volcanic activity. Thus we are concerned here with the exploration for massive sulphide ore deposits derived from and affected by contemporaneous and post mineral volcanic activity. Furthermore, most massive sulphide deposits are apparently formed in a submarine environment, deposited with extrusive rocks and sediments and/or chemical hot spring accumulations, then enclosed and protected by the addition of more volcanic and sedimentary material then, probably folded and deformed into one of their myriad of shapes.

The Ohio River Tunnel Project encountered multiple unexpected geotechnical challenges which, continuing to develop over time, hampered excavation completion and impacted the cast-in-place final lining technique and work execution sequence for the entire project. The continued degradation of the excavated hard rock tunnel conditions led to a unique, dynamic, geologic setting that forced the project to innovate new and adaptable measures allowing for a conventional cast-in-place liner to be completed in a safe and timely manner and minimize delay.

Understanding the illusive nature of the catastrophic failure of brittle solids is difficult. Proposed is a hypothesis of crack cessation. If, during catastrophic failure, cracks in a brittle solid stop before terminating on a preexisting crack, this hypothesis suggests that the slope of the size distribution curve will be lower. Moreover, this hypothesis suggests that when cracks stop, negative valleys and negative comers appear. Furthermore, particle shapes also change with particle size. While the hypothesis is unverified, it suggests that crack cessation could play a role in the comminution process.

The geostatistical method of indicator kriging (IK) was extended to analyze two-dimensional distributions of rock joint orientations. The IK method provides a non-parametric approach for spatial analysis of local probability distribu- tions. By taking into account the spatial correlation of rock joint outcomes and the relative geometry between estimation unit and samples, the IK method provides optimum, spatially conditioned estimates. The estimation method was tested by comparing distributions of actual mapped rock joint orientations with their corresponding kriged estimates. The comparisons show the unbiasedness and accuracy of the non-parametric approach for estimating local probability distributions.

Meramec Mining Company, a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corporation and St. Joe Minerals Corporation, is engaged in the mining, concentrating, and pelletizing of iron ore from the Pea Ridge Mine located near Sullivan, Missouri, about 70 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the mid-1950's by St. Joe during an exploration program to discover new lead orebodies. An airborne magnetometer survey which was run by the U. S. Geological Survey, the Missouri Geological Survey, and several min¬ing companies was published in 1950 and showed an anomaly in the Pea Ridge area. Test holes drilled in 1953 and 1954 revealed the presence of a large orebody of probable commercial significance; additional drilling in 1956 and 1957 provided confirmation of this. Meramec Mining Company was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began in the latter part of that year. The Pea Ridge orebody lies under about 1300 feet of sediments. It is tabular, about 2600 feet long and up to 600 feet thick, and lies in an approximate east-west delineation. The orebody dips about 800S and is of unknown depth. The ore is primarily high grade magnetite with smaller zones of specular hematite, The Pre-cambrian wall rock is rhyolite porphyry. After Abe Lee discovered gold (in April 1860) near the site of present-day Leadville, Colorado, he and is group staked nearly all of California Gulch with "speculative claims." They did so in an effort to grab any property that might be potentially profitable. But the plan did not work. New prospectors demanded a miners' meeting, from which arose the official "Bylaws of California Mining District, California Gulch, Arkansas River." These bylaws, adopted on May 12, 1860, established provisions as to the number, size and type of claims that could be filed. Fair laws invited more newcomers. By mid-summer, 5,000 people with tents and wagons were scattered from one end of the gulch to the other.Among the earliest arrivals to the region that spring were Horace Austin Warner Tabor and his wife, Augusta. H.A.W. Tabor, who was to become a pillar in the development of Leadville, arrived at California Gulch during a food shortage. He sacrificed his oxen so that hungry miners could eat. By doing so, he immediately became the friend of many. Augusta established a little store where she sold her baked goods and provided meals. Like most of the men, Horace prospected the surrounding hills. He only did so, however, for a short time. California Gulch yielded more than $5 million in gold during the next five years. By 1866, however, the placer gold was gone and most of the miners had packed up and left. Charles J. Mullen and Cooper Smith, who were grubstaked by a Philadelphian named J. Marshall Paul, found a new, rich lode at the Printer Boy Mine in 1868. It was the first underground gold mine in the Leadville area and marked the transition from surface mining to underground hard rock mining. Its discovery created a new but modest flurry of activity. Heavy black sand covered the region and made gold mining difficult. In 1875 William Stevens and Alvinus Wood decided to have the sand assayed. They discovered that it contained 15 ounces per ton of silver and was rich in carbonate. Stevens and Wood kept their find a secret for nearly two years. When the word spread in late 1877, the silver boom was on. In 1878 prospectors, merchants and others trickled into town from all directions. Dr. David H. Dougan closed his office. in Alma, crossed Mosquito Pass and set up shop in Leadville. Nobody seemed to need a doctor, however, and Dougan sat in his office for 28 days without a customer. On the 29th day he received word that there had been a mining accident and he was needed immediately. -That was the begin¬ning of his illustrious career in Leadville. Dougan was a successful physician, became mayor in 1881 and was later president of the Carbonate National Bank. Leadville was a simple community of log structures in 1878. By June of the following year, however, it had blossomed considerably. According to Cass Carpenter, as of May 1,1879, Leadville had "...19 hotels, 41 lodging houses, 82 drinking saloons, 38 restaurants, 13 wholesale liquor houses, 10 lumber yards, 7 smelting and reduction works, 2 sampling works for testing ores, 12 blacksmith shops, 6 livery stables, 6 jewelry stores, 3 undertakers and 21 gambling houses where all sorts of games are played as openly as the Sunday School sermon is conducted." Additionally, there were 36 brothels. When George E. King and other architects arrived, Leadville took on an air of elegance and sophistication. In sharp contrast to some of the Victorian-style, gingerbread-laced homes in Leadville, its suburbs were comprised of many tenement shacks and plain cabins mixed with a few commercial buildings, many mines and smelters. Mines sprinkled the area east of Leadville like pepper from a pepper shaker. Wherever there was a cluster of mines, a camp usually sprang up. Most were very close together. South of Leadville the giant Arkansas Valley lead smelter sprawled out between Stringtown and Bucktown in an area known as Smelter Valley. Founded in 1879 as the Billing and Eilers Smelter, the Arkansas Valley plant was operated by the American Smelting and Refining Company. Several other smelters operated in the vicin¬ity. In April 1878, Horace Tabor grubstaked prospectors August Rische and George Hook. For $64 worth of supplies and tools, he was guaranteed a one-third interest in their findings. Rische and Hook discovered the Little Pittsburg (often spelled Pittsburgh) Mine and made Tabor an instant millionaire. Tabor once purchased a "salted" mine, the Chrysolite; but instead of considering it a bad deal, he further developed the property and struck rich silver ore. Later, Tabor purchased the Matchless Mine for $117,000, possibly the only investment he made without partners. During its peak years, the Matchless yielded $1 million worth

Standing support is often used in conjunction with underground retreat mining. Knowledge of the load-displacement behavior of a standing support, and loading induced by the mine opening is critical to proper support selection. The NIOSH STOP database contains load-displacement laboratory test data for most commonly used standing supports. Hydraulic load cells currently used to measure in-situ loading of standing supports have exhibited leakage under load, producing irregularities within the dataset. An improved hydraulic load cell eliminates leakage and produces more consistent data. INTRODUCTION A hydraulic load cell, more commonly known by “flat jack” or JackPack, is a device installed to determine the loading characteristics of roof to floor supports. These standing or roof to floor supports include, but are not limited to: pumpable cribs, cans, wooden cribs (4-point, 9-point, etc.), metal props, wood timbers, concrete donut cribs, and other variations of these standing supports. Flat jack devices have been used previously to determine the loading of such roof to floor supports. The most commonly used load cell for standing supports is based on a design intended for pre-stressing standing supports, not load measurement. These load cells are produced in South Africa, and can be formed into several different shapes depending on the applications (Barczak). Flat Jacks are manufactured in various shapes and sizes depending on the application, common shapes are square and round that are 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) thick when collapsed as shown in Figure 1. The sheet metal that makes up the bladder is comprised of 19 gauge or 1.11125 mm (0.04375 inch) thickness, the top and bottom pieces of sheet metal are resistance seam welded around the perimeter. There are two different ports installed on one of the bladder skin corners of the flat jacks; these ports allow a fluid to fill the unit and the other port has a relief valve. The fill port is comprised of a check valve. The pressure relief valve is located in the second port; preset to 1724 kPa (250 psi), pressure relief valve will keep the load cell from bursting. Bursting of these load cells typically causes a small tear in the metal skin allowing the fluid to leak out without a large catastrophic failure. The effective inflation range of these load cells is between 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) to 254.0 mm (10.0 inches) thick. Different types of fluids can inflate these load cells but the most common and easily accessible fluid for testing applications is water. Water pressure from the mine supply line can inflate these load cells to the desired load. Depending on the pre-stressing requirements a pneumatic powered pump, hydraulic pump or hand pump may be required to inflate the load cells.

In this paper a simple three-layered medium is considered. A circular hole is centrally located in the intermediate layer. The layered sheet is loaded uniaxially perpendicular to the stratification. The Young's modulus of the intermediate layer is lower than that of the outer layers. The stress distribution around the circular hole in a stratified medium is significantly different when compared to the case of a continuous homogeneous medium. The distribution depends upon the ratio of the height of [the] intermediate layer and [the] hole diameter. A comparison of stress the distribution and procedures for preparation and testing of [the] model are given. The potential of the technique is outlined.

Abstract. Controlled flow is an aspect often desired in mine ventilation. This is normally obtained by using fans and regulators to achieve the required pressure balance in the system. Preference for a certain network layout of these control devices is influenced by technical as well as legal and economic factors. In this study, a model is developed based on an economic criterion by which an optimum layout of fans and regulators for a controlled flow system can be determined. The concept is analo¬gous to the critical path crashing. However, a linear programming package is used to demonstrate the solution procedure for a hypothetical venti¬lation network.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed coal mine blasting accident data obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor. The data were examined to determine the causes, frequency, and severity of accidents in an effort to point out the most dangerous aspects of coal mine blasting. Accident data for the 14 years from 1971 through 1984 show that there has been a total of 43 fatal and 926 nonfatal blasting accident victims in surface and under- ground coal mining. This is an average of 3.1 fatal and 66.1 non- fatal injuries each year. Underground coal mining accounted for 60.5% of the fatal and 78.7% of the nonfatal accidents involving explosives and breaking agents in coal mining. In addition, since 1970 there have been 53 fatal and 20 nonfatal injuries that occurred when explosives were the ignition source for dust and/or methane explosions in underground mines. Abstracts from 297 accidents that occurred from 1978 through 1984 were also examined to determine accident causes. Most accidents occur during scheduled blasting, and failure of the blast area security system is the leading cause. Blast area security problems in surface mining are failure to clear the blast zone, failure of personnel to follow instructions, inadequate guarding, and failure to retreat to a safe location and/or take adequate cover. Other common causes in surface mining include premature blasts, excessive flyrock, and misfires. In addition to the above causes, accidents in underground coal mining can be due to rockfalls triggered by the blast, unexpected breakthroughs, fumes, and incidents associated with Airdox-type systems.

The 3RPORT project is a 5-mile-long, 16-foot-internal-diameter tunnel excavated in hard rock by Slurry TBM in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Two-component grouting can be separated into two core areas of operation: batching and underground operations. This paper addresses the challenges faced and solutions implemented in these fundamental areas. The effects of external factors and their impacts on mix design and batching of grout will be explored. Underground, challenges of monitoring parameters and ensuring a proper mix between the two-components will be discussed, focusing on the adopted technical solutions and considerations to be taken in the design stage of tailskin grout ports.

In efforts to improve ingress/egress from the existing subway platforms in PATH’s Exchange Place Station, a new 18-foot horseshoe cross-passage tunnel was constructed by Walsh Construction who retained Kilduff Underground Engineering for design of the initial support system and to install and maintain geotechnical instrumentation. The project presented some unique challenges as a result of the proximity to pedestrians on the platform. PATH service remained uninterrupted, limiting the Contractor to mechanical means of excavation to advance the heading. The logistics proved very challenging for the approximate 100-foot-long tunnel excavated in soft Manhattan Schist. This paper will present the design and construction challenges for the project.
