In recent years in situ leach mining has emerged as a viable technology for the recovery of uranium from strata in South Texas which contain relatively low concentrations of uranium ore. Because the ore bodies lie within groundwater aquifers, a significant determinant in the economics is the requirement that such aquifers be protected from contaminantion. Since ammonia is one of the constituents of the leach solutions now being field tested, one environ- mental problem to be resolved is the removal of ammonia at the end of mining. A second related question is the fate of the ammonia which is not removed by the restoration procedure. This paper considers the displacement and migration of ammonium in a flowing electrolyte with concomitant ion exchange. The ion exchange is an important feature since, during the solution mining phase, ammonium saturates the mineral exchange sites and must be removed from these sites. A mathematical model is used to simulate this process and the model is tested against the results of laboratory experiments. It is found that the simulations are adequate if an appropriate selection of parameters is made. The model is then used to investigate the effect of cation composition and concentration of the restoration medium as well as dispersion on the overall effectiveness of the process. It is concluded that increasing the concentration of monovalent ions in a solution containing a mixture of both monovalent and divalent ions decreases the adsorption selectivity of the divalent ions with respect to all monovalent ions including ammonium. Thus increasing the ionic concentration of a restoration fluid by increasing the concentration of a nonselectively adsorbed (with respect to ammonium) ion may have a very limited benefit. Dispersion attending the flow of fluids in a porous medium is also shown to be an important factor. The effect of dispersion can greatly reduce the benefits of having a displacing cation which is adsorbed selectively with respect to ammonium. Since dispersion increases almost linearly with fluid velocity, an optimum displacement rate may exist.

The Floridan aquifer, which underlies all of Florida, yields water with a sulfate content of less than 50 parts per million in the north-western part and throughout most of the center of the State. In the southern part of Florida and along the most of the east coast, the sulfate concentration generally exceeds 100 parts per million and is as much as 1,700 parts per million. The sulfate concentration tends to be higher in the deeper zones of the aquifer. This map shows the sulfate concentration in the upper part of the aquifer. Sulfate is found in almost all natural water. Sulfate in rainwater is dissolved from impurities and gases in the atmosphere. Rankama and Sahama (1955, p. 314) report that the average sulfate content of rainwater is two parts per million; however, concentrations have been as high as 283 parts per million. Much of the sulfate in rainwater comes from hydrogen sulfide gas which is generated in shallow water on the continental shelves. The combustion of bituminous coal used for heating and industrial purposes seems to be an important local source of sulfate.

Over the last 20 years, the manufacturing sector of our country has been called upon to comply with ever core stringent environmental standards. The primary metals sector was particularly hard hit early on, to develop the technology, acquire the equipment, and implement the programs to eliminate or reduce the by-products of metal making. To this end, through a combination of technological innovation and extensive capital expenditures, the metals industry has met, and in many cases, exceeded the minimum standards. It is to this escalating cost - liability exposure issue - that Dereco has addressed itself. As we move into the decade of the 90's, the challenge facing the metals industry concerning the environment will be even more difficult than the previous decade. To focus in on one major aspect of legislated environmental regulations, the issue we will address today is; now that the by-products of metal production have been identified, accounted for and collected, how are they to be disposed of? The Flotaire Flotation Cell is a simple, efficient hydraulic/pneumatic Flotation Cell that has no moving parts. It is normally used in conjunction with a surfactant (frother) in which case the combination is known as "The Flotaire System". On many ores, metallurgical efficiencies are substantially increased and operating costs reduce. For example, in floating phosphate rock, it is not unusual for BPL recovery to be increased more than 10%, the major increase being due to floating coarse phosphate, up to 14 mesh, and the difficult to float phosphate. Substantial improvements have also been made on coal, mica, vermiculite, kaolin, barite, copper, etc.

A requirement for geological controls during orebody modeling results from the recognition of heterogeneous geological characteristics and/or abrupt variations in orebody geometries. While purely statistical methods are often sufficient for modeling uniform homogeneous deposits, and the only recourse for many that are extremely complex, geological interpretations can be extremely valuable as controls during the modeling process. The advent of relatively inexpensive, sophisticated graphical computer hardware and software has focused considerable attention on the three dimensional visualization capabilities now available to the mining industry. Orebody geometries can be easily imported into many systems as wireframe or solid models, rendered with shading and color, rotated in space, exploded into composite parts, zoomed into and otherwise displayed to awe any audience. The requirements for an initially meaningful, accurate, geological interpretation are sometimes lost when the focus is on an apparently complex, highly resolved end product. Details of the initial data and sensitivities of modeling assumptions are not always sufficiently scrutinized. Software capabilities have extended the geopoetic license into three dimensions. The new tools, while greatly facilitating model construction and rendering, have done little to expedite basic data preparation and analysis. This paper attempts to briefly summarize the purpose and method of the construction of geological controls. The examples selected are from wire­framing and block modeling; application software processes commonly used in the mining industry today.

The City of Akron will construct the Northside Interceptor Tunnel (NSIT) project to control and reduce combined sewer overflows. One component of the project a large diameter tunnel diversion / flow control structure that will facilitate tunnel storage, divert dry weather flow to the treatment plant, and divert large wet weather events that are greater than the tunnel capacity to the Cuyahoga River. The structure is designed to pass up to 1.2 billion gallons per day of flow and includes floatables screening. This paper will discuss project background, factors that influenced shaft location, and options evaluated to manage the large design flows.

The Downtown Rail Extension (DTX) is principal element of the planned second phase of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority’s (TJPA) Transbay Program. When complete, this regionally critical project will connect Caltrain’s regional rail system and the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s statewide system to the Salesforce Transit Center in downtown San Francisco via a 1.3-mile tunnel. Studied since the 1970s, the DTX has now received environmental clearance, and key stakeholders are aligned on the project’s configuration and its expedited delivery. This paper describes efforts to optimize the DTX configuration and develop an informed project delivery strategy that incorporates construction industry feedback on project phasing, contract packaging, and procurement methods that accomplish the project’s budget goals.

In 2006 Arch Materials initiated the development of an underground limestone mining complex. The decision to proceed with the project was the end result of several years of market research and geological reconnaissance. The scope of the project included the construction of two declines to the mining horizons located approximately 900 feet below the surface, the means and methods of this phase will be the primary focus of this discussion. The design, fabrication and erection of a state of the art crushing and screening processing plant which when completed will have the primary crushing located on the mine level allowing uniformly sized material to be brought to the surface by means of a highly efficient conveyor system and a surface portion of the plant where material would be additionally processed, screened and stockpiled into specific product types. Also included in the scope of the project is the construction of offices, warehouse and shop facilities necessary to support the operations, commercial sales and distribution of the finished products.

The Pipestone Lake anorthosite complex in Manitoba, Canada, was recently been re-identified as a potential source for titanium, iron, and vanadium. The present study utilized a 350 kg hard rock sample, which originated from the "Main Central" zone of the deposit. Commercial pilot-size equipment, such as dry low intensity roll magnets, wet high intensity magnets (WHIMS), and high tension electro-dynamic roll separators, was employed. As products, ilmenite up to 48.5% TiO2, and magnetite concentrates up to 87.9% Fe3O4 with 5.25% TiO2 were obtained. The majority of the vanadium reported to the magnetite concentrate. Subsequent characterization of various separation products shed light on the potential grade and recovery of the minerals from this deposit.

Not quite a year ago, during a speech to a group of mining professionals in Washington, DC, the subject centered around the long-range importance of conducting research projects and how much that research needs to specifically apply to health and safety matters in our industry. The point was made about the critical need to work together with government, private industry, labor organizations and academia speaking with a unified voice as we all march into the future together. The fundamental benefits of competitive research were mentioned -- to improve our quality of life, to develop our energy resources, to achieve a safe and healthy environment and to ensure long-term economic growth. Very importantly, emphasis was given to the natural link that makes my agency, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health -- NIOSH -- the beneficiaries of each other's findings.

Introduction Surface mining is a business, and the objective of most businesses is to make as much money as possible within certain responsible constraints. Businesses normally measure their potential to make money by estimating the discounted cash flow rate of return on new projects or the net present value for ongoing projects. These estimators of profitability are calculated using the following well-known equation: [ ] where i is the year, n is the total number of years, A, is the after tax net cash generation in year I, r is the discount rate and NPV is the net present value. In its simplest form, when the value of r makes the NPV equal to zero, the discounted cash flow-rate of return (DCF-ROR) is defined. The maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified at the point where the NPV or DCF-ROR is at a maximum. Depending on the measure used (DCF-ROR or discount rate) for calculating the NPV, the definition of recoverable reserve will be different for exactly the same deposit. Maximization of the measure of profitability and the economically recoverable reserves should not be separated from the mining method and sequence of exploiting the reserve. The surface mining methods may involve multiple-pass development of the resource, mining to the ultimate limit in one pass or a combination of the two methods with backfill. Multiple-pass development When planning a multiple-pass mining operation, it is important to determine the width of pit expansions that are appropriate for a specific situation. Production personnel typically want wide, open work areas where operations can be set up to run at peak efficiency. While this is understandable, the trade-off between highly efficient production operations and an overinvestment in stripping should be carefully weighed. As long as safety is not compromised, a few cents per bank cubic yard increase in operating cost due to lower productivity by working in more confined spaces may well be offset by a decrease in the overall short-term stripping requirements. A mini study on productivity and cost should help quantify this cost before deciding on minimum phasing requirements. The bigger challenge associated with establishing smaller work areas is securing operations and management buy-in to marginally lower productivity when reporting results. When cost reduction is the important management goal and everyone is focusing on unit costs, one sometimes loses sight of the goal of total cost management and, even more importantly, maximum profitability. The first pit should be defined by the first grouping of recoverable mineral that has the highest after-tax unit value and forms a feasible mining unit. The assumed mining of the first pit should be followed by the assumed mining of the second most profitable practical pit or pit expansion. If this process of grouping and sequencing is followed until the profitability approaches zero, the general sequence required to extract the maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified. The curve in Fig. 1 is constructed for a rate of production, R, and a quality management strategy, Q, by calculating the NPV for a series of sequences, with each sequence assuming that the operations are terminated on successively lower profit pits. These values are plotted to form the curve in Fig. 1. If the operation ceases on a pit that has too high of a profit, opportunity is lost, and the NPV is lower than the maximum. The NPV curve peaks and starts to decline before the zero-profit pit is assumed mined. This occurs because the money invested in advanced stripping would have made more money invested at the discount rate than by mining the next pit expansion. Therefore, the maximum economically recoverable reserve is defined by the pit limit corresponding to the maximum NPV. There may be an opportunity to refine the definition of the "ultimate pit" around the maximum-value point. The precise definition of the ultimate pit early in the mine life may or may not be important today, depending on how far off in the future these limits will be reached. A field trial of by distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) technique was conducted at a longwall coal mine in Australia. This investigation was designed to assess the applicability of DOFS for microseismic monitoring in mining. The experiments used commercially available optic fiber cables, geophones and associated data acquisition instruments – a fiber interrogator and a seismic recorder. The fiber cable was deployed in a 300m deep hole and in trenches of approximately 3.5 km long on the ground surface around and across the longwall panel being mined. The results obtained from the experiments have shown that DOFS is able to acquire microseismic data with quality that is comparable to geophones. It has been proven that DOFS can achieve higher spatial resolution for seismicity sensing and higher accuracy for locating events than a geophone network. These characteristics are particularly useful for using DOFS to monitor ground vibrations associated with ground caving processes and rock fracturing events induced by mining and civil engineering. It was also found that far more additional seismic events were recorded by the fibers than by the geophones. Automated data discrimination and processing methods must be developed in order to utilize DOFS for real-time applications.

Respirable coal dust has been long recognized as a leading cause of multiple lung diseases. Efforts aimed at reducing dust concentration in underground mines have been made, but increases in coal workers’ pneumoconiosis incidence rates over the last 20 years among U.S. miners are concerning. Dust deposition and water spray suppression are two types of dust removal mechanisms in underground mining activities. In this study, laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the respirable dust decay characteristics during deposition and suppression processes in a confined dust chamber. Dust concentration and size distribution were monitored continuously throughout each 60-minute test. A number-basis particle size distribution was used for analysis to capture the changes of smaller size fractions within the investigated dust sample. This study found that around 62.1% of respirable dust particles were deposited at the end of the deposition test. In addition, the final deposition rate for very fine particles can be less than 20%. The results from the suppression test indicate that larger particles were removed quickly; however, sub-micron particles remain suspended through the 60- minute water spray, and particles under 0.5 µm can be considered irremovable dust under single-spray operation conditions. This study also observed the resuspension of a significant amount of sub-micron particles by the water spray. The results of this study provide basic information for improving dust control strategies and can be utilized to improve the water spray performance for reducing airborne dust levels.

Underground mine fires are a threat to the safety and health of mine workers. The timely determination of the location and size of an underground fire is of great importance in developing firefighting strategies and reducing the risk of any injuries. Machine learning was used in this paper to develop a predictive model for fire location and fire size in an underground mine. The ventilation data were obtained by simulating different mine fire scenarios with MFire. The ventilation data of all airways were used as features to predict the fire location. Based on the feature importance, five airways were selected to monitor, and the airflow data of the selected airways were used to predict the fire location and fire size. An accuracy score of 0.920 was obtained for the prediction of fire location. In addition, in-depth analyses were conducted to characterize the wrong predictions with the purpose of improving the performance of the random forest model. The results show that the occurrence of fire at closely connected airways at some locations can generate misleading ventilation data for each other and the model performance can be further improved by grouping them. Fire size is another factor affecting the model performance and the model accuracy increases with increasing fire size. The result from this study can help mine safety personnel make informed decisions during a mine fire emergency.

Phillips Coal Company (PCC) submitted the first surface mine permit application under the Office of Surface &lining approved regulatory program of the State of Louisiana. This application for the Oxbow Lignite Surface Mine which is located approximately 64 kilometers (40 miles) southeast of Shreveport, Louisiana was submitted in March 1981. The State of Louisiana Office of Conservation, Surface Mining Division, assigned this application number LSM-1, indicating it is the first one submitted in Louisiana history. The permit area for the Oxbow Mine encompasses 6,251 hectares (15,627 acres). Of this total permit area, 5,862 hectares (14,656 acres) were classified by soil type as prime farmland by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service (SCS). Prime farmland acreage in the permit area became a major central issue in our early planning stages and throughout the permitting process of the Oxbow Mine, due to the magnitude of acreage involved.

Languages such as SIMSCRIPT and GASP have reduced the programming skills required to build simulation models, but not to a level where these can be used by a busy engineer or manager unless he has extensive programming experience. In an attempt to make simulation a more readily available tool, Sanford (1969) structured a generalized materials handling model (UGMHS)* for underground coal mining. The majority of materials handling systems consist of a set of moves and a set of pieces of equipment required to execute the moves. UGMHS gives a technique for describing and classifying the elements in these sets and then a technique for simulating the interactions of these elements as the materials handling system operates. To apply the model, the user simply furnishes data parameters and a fixed set of orders to the computer for his own problem. This new philosophy of dynamic simulation as applied by UGMHS was demonstrated in the paper by Sanford and Manula (1973). A dynamic model of underground coal mining was presented for the purposes of systems design and selection of equipment for a completely new operation and the analysis of existing ones for possible alterations, additions, and general improvements. The main differences between this application and its predecessors is the ability to transport material from multiple mine faces to multiple mine destinations and the ready adaptability to a wide variety of mine layouts. The second difference that characterizes the model is the deterministic simulation of equipment moves according to their mechanical capabilities and the physical profile of the mining scheme. Here, the computer generates performance data in the absence of time studies to compare equipment rather than operator performance.

Oxidation of coal can best be described as a process of deterioration, since most of the uses of coal, such as for fuel and by-product chemical and coke production, are adversely affected by coal oxidation, and the inclusion of oxidized coal in most coal products detracts from their value. There are probably many mechanisms of coal oxidation, and the ways oxygen molecules combine as complexes with coal macromolecules to form new substances have been dealt with and speculated upon by many workers1)* but are not dealt with in the present work. This study deals with tests and methods of detecting oxidized coal, with particular emphasis on the microscopically discernible changes that accompany the chemical and physical changes that affect the technological properties of coal during oxidation.

Idler engineering, operation, and maintenance cannot be covered in depth in a short paper. Therefore, this will be a general look into the subject matter in light or the present-day technology. Depending on the source or reference used, belts for handling bulk material underground came into being between 1900 and 1920, while strip mining appeared in the thirties. The conveyor belt speeds in that era were in the 300 rpm to 500 rpm range. Belt speeds or 600-700 rpm were in vogue in the thirties, and the early sixties saw speeds or 800-900 rpm. Today, speeds or 1000 rpm are not looked at with dismay; in fact, speeds or 2000 rpm are being discussed. Among the driving forces moving the bulk materials handling industry to these greater heights have been the mining operators and engineers. Their appetite to increase output, yield, and reduced per-ton costs has constantly challenged the bulk material handling industry to develop products capable or handling these increased capacities. One or the products affected by this movement is the idler. Apart from the conveyor belt itself, it is one or the most significant parts or a conveyor system because or the sheer numbers needed in an installation.

Coal is deposited at a mine site in several thin seams which outcrop in rolling hills and dip at about 8° to the northeast. The deposit is located in the northeast area of the State of New Mexico in the Southwest of the United States. A drilling program was undertaken and was quite irregular. Not all of the seams appear in all of the drill holes. Some of the holes did not go deep enough, while others were drilled below the outcrop of some seams. Occasionally a seam would pinch out and not be seen in a drill hole. Also, the outcrops of the seams are buried in many places by several feet of alluvium. All of these factors make correlation of the seams between drill holes difficult. The drawing of cross sections in three directions and at many locations across the mining area have been necessary to assure the accuracy of the input data.

Since Campbell Mine began processing ore, there has been a gravity gold recovery circuit. From 1947 to 1982, gravity gold was concentrated through the combination of jigs and mercury amalgamation. In 1982, jigs with concentrating table upgrading commenced and was utilized until the end of 1994. As of January of 1995 to the present, Knelson Concentrators in com­bination with concentrating tables have been employed to achieve a refinable product. An evaluation of the justification used for the last change is the focus of this paper.
