As the size of the mills get larger and the liners get heavier, a better means had to be found to handle liner replacement. McLellan Industries is famous for their innovative ideas and was called upon by an engineering company to develop a mill liner crane. The first crane was developed for Similkameen about 1969 to serve a 32' 0 x 14' Long SAG Mill. The next was Island Copper in Port Hardy, B.c., the same size as Similkameen in 1970. At that time, we took existing hydraulic cranes and modified them to meet the mill configuration. In 1973, we developed a completely new approach for the Southern Peru copper mine at Tacna, Peru for a Ball Mill, size 16'-6" 0 X 19' Long. Each installation required a design study to meet the change in mill size, trunnion size, elevation of floor to feed trunnion, area at the feed or discharge end of the mill. We have supplied self-propelled units as well as lift in. When there is no room at the feed end and if the mill has a trunnion overflow discharge, we have the mill supplier provide a structural frame to span the sump and move the mill liner handier into position with the use of the overhead crane or a mobile crane.

Mining of molybdenum at Questa, New Mexico has been accomplished by block cave methods since August, 1983. As caving progresses, a periodic geologic evaluation is made of the rock-types present in finger raises on the Grizzly Level of the mine. The production maturity of the cave can be monitored by relating this data to geologic cross-sections through the ore body. The draw point mapping program is a simple and effective tool that is used in making draw control decisions at Questa.

The pumping of abrasive and sometimes corrosive slurries is normally carried out at modest heads (say 100 ft) with specially designed centrifugal pumps. When heads become higher than this, two or more pumps are used in series but ultimately the system requires staffed pumps with consequent increase of costs. The only other type of pump suitable for high heads is the Ram pump but this is notoriously subject to wear. The paper describes a novel application of the so-called "lock hopper" principle to continuous pumping of slurries. The pump itself is never in contact with the abrasive slurry nor is it subject to head or capacity limitation. It works by displacing slurry with the clear fluid component of the slurry (in most cases water) through cylindrical vessels fitted with plug valves to control the discharge and filling operations. Two such vessels are used and the scheme is completed with a liquid clarifier which allows the pipe flow to be maintained continuously. The paper describes experience on the prototype unit used to discharge tailings from a coal washery in Scotland. A tentative evaluation is also made of the economics of this pump against conventional equipment.

During the past two decades, we have witnessed the computer revolution. Like other revolutions, it has been successful in many ways; however, it has not been without difficulties. One of the areas where these difficulties have been more prevalent has been in the application of computers for the purpose of controlling industrial processes. During the early 1960's, many people naively assumed that bridging the gap between data processing and process control was a simple matter of connecting a few wires, doing a little programming, laying off most of the people and watching the plant make great increases in production as the lights on the computer blinked on and off. Unfortunately, it has not been that simple. Instead, a whole new-set of disciplines has been required to overcome the major obstacles that exist. Nevertheless, current successes are proving that the digital process control computer is here to stay, and that through the application of digital computers an attractive return on investment can be obtained in many applications.. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate some of the requirements for successful implementation of computer control systems, with particular attention to the following four objectives: First: Acquaint the reader with the general control problems so that he may more fully recognize the major requirements for successful implementation. Second: To acquaint the reader with the types of control hardware that can be considered for use in the development of control systems. Third: To discuss some of the major obstacles that must be overcome for successful implementation of computer control systems. Fourth: To discuss the systems approach in the development of control systems and to illustrate it in the implementation of an actual control system.

Controlling dust generation and keeping it below permissible limits to meet federal dust standards at the working face of a room-and-pillar coal mine is a challenge for a mine operator. With the recent changes in federal dust regulations requiring lower worker exposure, maintaining compliance has become increasingly difficult. The current most effective practice of dust control at a continuous miner face in an underground mine is the use of a flooded-bed scrubber. A study carried out by the U.S National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber could achieve cleaning efficiencies between 58 and 90 percent. But the operation of such a system is maintenance intensive. The flooded-bed scrubber screen becomes clogged with dust particles and requires frequent cleaning to maintain performance. However, the dust control issue is not solely a mining-industry problem. Other industries face similar issues. The University of Kentucky collaborated with Toyota Motor Manufacturing on the development of a novel wet scrubber, called the vortecone scrubber, for capturing over-sprayed paint particles in automotive paint booths. The vortecone scrubber achieved a cleaning efficiency of 99 percent and required minimal maintenance. This study aims to assess the ability of this vortecone scrubber to capture respirable dust in an underground coal mine. The paper presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of this vortecone scrubber. It discusses the effects of air quantity and dust particle size on the performance of the scrubber.

24.1-BASIC PRINCIPLES JAMES R. TAYLOR The basic principle involved in maintenance is protection of a company's investment through the care and upkeep of machinery and equipment, buildings and properties. Maintenance is justified through making available to the maximum extent possible the facilities, machines and services required by the operating and production departments in their function of insuring optimum return on investment. As the size, cost and complexity of the equipment used in modern mining and related industries increase, operating and production personnel become proportionately more dependent upon maintenance engineering for its contribution to the overall profit picture. A greater part of the total cost now is charged to maintenance and the maintenance group becomes a major company unit. Basic maintenance concepts have changed very little over the years, but the advances in methods and technique have brought about tremendous challenge and have in consequence assumed a greater influence and importance. The older "sledge- hammer" methods have given way to engineered and scientific systems, while the accelerating development of intricate equipment and machinery, and the instrumentation essential for control, demand an ever-increasing upgrading of maintenance personnel. Regardless of this growth in importance, cost and complexity of the maintenance function, it is important to remember that it is not an independent and self-sufficient unit, but is a necessary facet of the entire plant operation and is subject to the company's total production effort. As one part of a team, maintenance is successful only when functioning cooperatively wit11 the other departments it serves Close collaboration in all areas served by n maintenance group is essential if it is to function fully to protect the company's investment, whether the assets are in machinery, materials or people. 24.1.1-MAINTENANCE SCOPE Maintenance functions may be grouped into the two general classifications of primary and secondary. This grouping constitutes a basic division although, in practice, the scope of the maintenance activity varies in each mine or plant and is subject to differences in size and type of operations and company policy, plus the influence of precedent, which may be sectional or industry-wide. The primary functions supply the justification for the maintenance engineering department. while secondary functions are variable according to plant conditions and needs. The primary functions may be categorized as follows: 1. Maintenance of existing machinery and equipment. 2. Maintenance of existing buildings and grounds. 3. Inspection and lubrication of equipment and machinery. 4. Utilities generation and distribution. 5. Alterations to existing equipment and facilities. 6. Installation of new equipment and facilities. 7. Instrumentation.

The Mercur Mine, developed and operated by Getty Mining Company, is designed to process 3,000 tons/day of gold ore from the historical Mercur Hill mining district. The mill process involves crushing, grinding, and cyanide carbon in leach for recovery of gold ores ranging from 0.08 to 0.10 oz/ton. During the mining of normal grade ore, a substantial tonnage of material containing 0.02 to 0.05 oz/ton is mined and would be available for heap leaching. Also, Getty Mining is developing methods to test and prepare lower grade material for heap leaching by rejecting a course rock fraction from the grinding circuit SAG mill. This lower grade fraction is suitable for heap leaching, and its removal will upgrade the regular mill feed. Other test methods are directed toward leaching techniques on some 4.0 million tons of tailings that resulted from roasting and/or cyanide leaching Mercur ores in the early 1900s. The natural carbons associated with the Mercur deposits require special treatment to reduce their gold adsorption effects when leached with cyanide.

Biohydrometallurgy originated, some forty years ago, from an environmental problem, namely the serious pollution of the Ohio river by acid drainage water coming from neighboring subbituminous coal mines. Studies aimed at elucidating the cause of the intensive oxidation of the iron sulfide (pyrite) inclusions of those coals, led to the discovery of a bacterium, Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (Temple and Colmer, 1951), capable of acting as a catalyzer, accelerating the otherwise very slow chemical oxidation of iron sulfide to rates many orders of magnitude higher. However, it is now recognized that the biotechnology of microbial mining dates back to 1963, when the ability of this bacterium to solubilize copper from sulfide ores was ascertained (Razzell and Trussell, 1963). Much research has been carried out on biohydrometallurgy over these last 25 years and is still being actively conducted all over the world. The interdisciplinary nature of this young branch of science and technology is reflected by the variety of experts involved: microbiologists, mining engineers, hydrometallurgists, physico-chemists, mineralogists, solid-state physicists and biochemists. This intensive research effort has provided a solid background on the fundamentals of this technology, although many important issues have still to be solved, amongst which the enzymatic mechanisms controlling biocatalysis of mineral sulfides dissolution, the influence of bulk- and surface solid-state physics of metal sulfides on dissolution mechanisms, the interaction of the various strains composing natural microbial floras. Their elucidation should permit the rationalization of biohydrometallurgical techniques and the optimization of commercial processes. Biohydrometallurgy has already achieved satisfactory results: copper recovery from submarginal copper sulfide run-of-mine ores (i.e. assaying less than 0.3% Cu) by in-situ, dump and/or heap leaching is successfully practised in many countries and uranium recovery through bioleaching is competitive with other leaching processes.

"What is past is prologue" - motto of National Archives The question of past, present, and future safety performance in the coal mining industry is not merely an academic one, or one which arises from soul-searching curiosity. It is a question involving pragmatic ramifications, and the answers, or perhaps the public perception of the answers, will have a strong impact on the public policies which influence the course of meeting the Nation's future energy demands. Those of us in the coal industry are keenly aware of the significant impact of the public reaction -- in the form of the 1969 Health and Safety Act -- to -past performance of the coal industry which it found unacceptable. That Act was revolutionary -- and it was expensive. But in finding the industry's past performance unacceptable, the public also recognized its own contributory role through having enjoyed a "buyer's market" forced on a highly competitive industry. One result was to limit the industry's resources and restrict its ability for self-improvement of its safety performance. In acknowledgement of that role, the public picked up the tab for Black Lung disability incurred prior to that time.

"INTRODUCTION The small strain assumption routinely made in tunnel analyses remains sufficient from an engineering point of view as long as convergences do not exceed 10%. More specifically, small strain theory assumes that deformations are so small (in relation to the size of the underground opening) that any geometric change in the continuum can be disregarded (Fig. 1a). In fact, however, the geometry is updated during loading (or unloading) according to large strain theory and thus equilibrium and stiffness are evaluated on the deformed configuration of the continuum (Fig. 1b).In problems involving large deformations, where the undeformed and the deformed tunnel geometry differ significantly, small strain theory leads to erroneous and sometimes even nonsensical results (i.e. it can predict wall displacements even greater than the excavated radius under conditions of very low stiffness and strength, high in situ stress and low support pressure). This can easily be verified from the widely applied relationships for the ground response curve. For example, in the ideal case of linearly elastic behaviour, the convergence of an unsupported opening equals (1+?) s0 / E (where E, ? and s0 denote the Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and initial isotropic stress, respectively) and is greater than 100% for E < (1+?) s0. Although convergences are less than 10% in the great majority of tunnelling projects, very large deformations may take place when tunnelling through weak rocks under a high overburden (Fig. 2). This paper will first present a very simple and practicable way to account for large strains, based entirely on the results of routine small strain analyses, and will subsequently show the importance of addressing large strains in tunnel analysis and design with reference to three typical case studies of tunnelling in squeezing ground."

Although not generally recognized, Arizona has rock salt deposits unique in the United States. This uniqueness stems from a combination of two factors: (1) relatively youthful geologic age and (2) nonmarine origin. Although Arizona shares one deposit with Nevada (Figure 1, No. I) there are three others within the State (Nos. 2, 4, 5) that are believed to be both late Cenozoic in age (less than 15 million years) and nonmarine in origin. The only other recognized nonmarine salt deposits in the U.S. are much older, being in the early Cenozoic (Eocene) Green River Formation of Colorado and Wyoming. According to Johnson and Gonzales (1), the remaining rock salt deposits in the United States are marine and either Paleozoic or Mesozoic in age. Of the seven localities shown in Figure 1, six in the Basin and Range geologic province are believed to represent nomarine late Cenozoic phenomena and one (No. 7) in the Colorado Plateau geologic province is Paleozoic (Permian) in age and marine in origin. The following comments are intended to update the general geologic highlights of these deposits and to summarize the nature of their present utilization.

The sand and gravel industry in Southern California has made a sizeable contribution to the construction development of the 15 County area in this part of the State. Facing this mineral extraction industry, in the next decade, is a problem of meeting the market demand. The question is, "how can sand, gravel and rock operations be made compatible with goals for sound and attractive community development?" Three basic principal characteristics of the land needed for this-mining industry are: 1. The land must have workable sand, gravel or stone deposits. 2. The land must be properly located for transportation purposes close to the market in order to sell the aggregate at a minimum cost. 3. The land must be zoned so that it will be permissible to mine.

"In May 2015 the New Monte Bianco aerial cableway, operating on the Italian side, have been completed. It connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 metres above sea level (m a.s.l.)) with the intermediate station at Pavillon de Mont Frety (2160 m a.s.l.) and with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3460 m a.s.l.). A new underground link between Helbronner Peak and New Torino Refuge has also been built. The link is divided into two different sections: the first one, a 70 meters deep vertical pit created using the “Raise Boring”, descends underground from Helbronner Peak station; the second section, a 160 meters long sub horizontal tunnel, emerges at Torino Refuge. After a first introduction focused on the general layout of the project, the paper will present the geomechanical survey aimed to evaluate the effect of permafrost on the stability of intensely fractured granitic mass. Finally, it will describe the relevant issues related to the highest construction yard in Europe (3400 m a.s.l.): difficult conditions such as extremely cold and windy weather and restricted spaces. INTRODUCTION The new cable way connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 m a.s.l.), close to Courmayeur, with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3462 m a.s.l.) and its territory, as well as links with France and, through the French territory, with the town of Chamonix (1000 m a.s.l.). The overall layout is divided into two sections (as shown in Figure 1): the first section, “Pontal d’Entreves – Mont Frety”, has a length of 1700m, elevation differential of 886m, a capacity of 800 persons/hour and cable cars for 80 passengers; the second one, “Mont Frety – Punta Helbronner”, has a length of 2630m, elevation differential of 1276m, a capacity of 600 persons/hour, and cable cars for 75 passengers. The new system is designed for fully rotating cable cars moving at a constant rate of 9.0 m/s. The track requires constructing special cables supports, three for the first section and two for the second one."

Cognitive representations and misconceptions of flow through circuits is an area which has received little attention from science educators, cognitive psychologists, or accident investigators. Misconceptions are also called Aristotelian thinking. They involve a person using primitive unscientific ways of reasoning to make decisions about events (Piaget, 1929; Nussbaum & Novick, 1982; McCloskey, 1983). The use of such primitive concepts leads to errors in reasoning about scientific and technical problems. The existence of misconceptions is well documented among children, adolescents, and adults involved in learning science concepts (Piaget, 1929; Cole & Raven, 1969; Clement, 1982; Mistrell, 1982; McDermott, 1984; Richardson, 1987). Concepts of flow through circuits are important because miners&apos; conceptual errors about these aspects may be, in part, responsible for two fatal mine disasters. On at least two separate occasions, methane gas explosions occurred in underground mines when separate ventilation systems were connected (Elam, Fuller, Carter, Cavanaugh, Fesak & Painter, 1983; Fesak & Cavanaugh, 1984). A review of these disasters indicates that conceptual errors made by miners may have resulted in the accidents (Cole, Wala, Haley, & Vaught, 1987). In this study, co-author Andrzej Wala, stated that his research had "identified conceptual errors that may have caused the miners in these disasters to make fatal mistakes" (Cole et al. 1987), p. 167. Further exploration of these conceptual errors by Wala has led to the hypothesis that misconceptions of basic aspects of flow distribution changes in mine ventilation circuits, are at least, in part, responsible for some mine disasters caused by errors in ventilation systems (Wala & Cole, 1987). Why should these conceptual errors occur? Ausubel (1963) suggested that students come to a new area of study with their own conceptions or preconceptions about how a process operates. Furthermore, these preconceptions may be in conflict with the empirical data from the discipline. In such cases, learning becomes a process in which new concepts must displace or be re-molded from stable concepts that the student has constructed over many years (Clement, 1982). Given the existing research with misconceptions and the work of Wala and Cole (1987), it was hypothesized that experienced miners; either working miners, students of mining engineering, or professional mining engineers, harbored misconceptions about the formal or conceptual aspects of mine ventilation circuits. The misconceptions hypothesized to exist involved flow distribution changes in complex mine ventilation circuits; specifically, how does flow distribution change when a ventilation circuit pathway is altered? Given this information, the following research questions were proposed. Research Questions 1. Do experienced miners and mining engineers harbor misconceptions about mine ventilation systems? In world-wide mining circles countries become known by the principal minerals they produce. The production of iron, copper, phosphate and sulphur in the United-States-has-been particularly significant and has provided the base for aggressive developments in heavy industry, agriculture and chemicals. Mention diamonds and gold-and you will think--South Africa; silver-Mexico; nickel and asbestos--Canada. The main purpose of this paper is to point out that potash mast be added to the list of minerals by which Canada is known in the mining World. The potash deposits of western Canada must be classed as a major world source of chemical fertilizer raw material. We believe that they are both the largest and the richest of all known deposits in the world. The most knowledgeable people in the industry avoid making estimates of reserves because even where the arithmetic is correct the total is so large that it appears to be ridiculous. In 1957 Marion Goudie made a carefully qualified estimate of 6 billion tons of recoverable potash above 3,500 ft, and grading 25 per cent K20 or better. This figure can now be increased by the amounts available through solution mining. No one has bothered to estimate how much this is because it is so large that the actual amount is not significant.

A common decision in openpit mining is to determine the extraction sequence of notional three-dimensional production blocks so as to maximize the net present value of the extracted orebody, while adhering to precedence and operational resource constraints. This openpit block sequencing (OPBS) problem is commonly formulated as an integer program, with binary variables representing if and when each block is extracted. In practical applications, the number of blocks can be large and the time horizon can be long; therefore, instances of this problem can be difficult to solve using the exact approach of optimization. The problem is even more challenging to solve when it includes explicit minimum operational resource constraints. Our maximum value feasible pit (MVFP) algorithm generates an initial integer feasible solution for OPBS problems, in which minimum operational resource constraints are strictly enforced. As an exact approach, we present a Tailored Lagrangian Relaxation (TLR), in which the selection of constraints to dualize is guided by information provided by the MVFP algorithm. We present results and graphics to demonstrate the utility of our techniques for instances containing up to 25,000 blocks and 10 time periods.

The next 13 years gave me an education that anyone, then or now, would well envy. W.T. Reid had founded Belmont School along the lines of Groton and, as at Groton, he sent many graduates to Harvard. He obtained excellent teachers and maintained as strict a discipline as the independent nature of the western students would stand. With a beautiful location in an unspoiled little valley in the foot- hills of the Coast Range there was every chance for walks and expeditions. The years at Belmont were good ones. My closest friends were Harold Jordan and Lewis Hackett. Lewis was son of the military director at the school. With half a dozen other very young inmates we early won the sobriquet of "The Dirty Dozen." Sliding down a steep muddy hill on barrel staves helped us earn the name. An inherited shyness exaggerated my sensitivity at being a "teacher&apos;s boy" and this prevented a close association with the wilder western boys who made up most of the schoolmates. Trapping wildcats and coyotes in the brush-covered hills and taking long walks gave me plenty to do. I had grown too fast and when I went to college was 6 ft 3 in. tall and weighed only 145 lb-hardly a respectable bean pole. I was only two months past 16 when I left for Harvard. The long summer vacations were happy ones. Most of them were spent in the high mountains, and even when I was ten years old I could keep up with anyone on long steep climbs. I learned to handle a rowboat during our stays at Lakeside, a rustic resort at the south- east corner of Lake Tahoe that could then be reached only by the steamer that made a dally trip around the Lake. Several of the teachers at Belmont remained good friends as long as we were on the same side of the continent. The finest was C.H. The design, operation, and performance of an integrated pilot plant for recovering zinc and copper from a complex sulfide ore are described. Metallurgical processing comprised selective sulfate roasting in a fluid bed, leaching in a weak sulfuring acid solution, recovering copper by cementation with scrap iron, air oxidation to remove soluble iron, more-or-less conventional purification for removal of impurities deleterious to zinc electrolysis, recovering zinc by electrolyzing solutions, and recycling spent electrolyte to the sulfating roaster. The effects of several feed preparation and roasting variables on the sulfation response of zinc, copper, and iron are set forth, together with the electrolyzing characteristics of the zinc solutions.

A major share of the increase in the energy demands of Ontario province in the next decade will be supplied by bituminous coal mined in the U,S, To be competitive with alternative sources of energy, it is essential that the delivered cost of coal, inclusive of all transportation charges, be kept at a minimum. The Bessemer aid Lake Erie Railroad Company and the Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Company are currently building a shiploading terminal at Conneaut, Ohio, to service this tonnage, together with expected increases in coal consumption in the Eastern Lake Erie - Lake Ontario area, (see Fig, 1).

Comminution is an old art. Unfortunately the analysis of the unit operations has been handicapped by the lack of both theoretical and experimental information. Two types of infor¬mation are needed, one an understanding of what happens when a particle breaks in a brittle manner; and two, an understanding of what happens when the daughter fragments pass through the mill. This paper is concerned with the former, the catastrophic fracture of a brittle solid. Recently, successful theoretical attacks on the frac¬ture of brittle solids have yielded significant-results. New experimental techniques are yielding insight into the physical phenomenon occurring during brittle fracture. Many of the re¬doubtable shiboliths of the last century are either being laid to rest or verified.
