During 1983, 42.2% of the 686.0 (624.3 Mt) million tons of coal reported, 289.6 (263.5 Mt) million tons were mechanically cleaned, of which 107 (97.4 Mt) million tons were cleaned by dense media (magnetite and sand) processes.' The percentage of bituminous coal and lignite cleaned mechanically by dense medium processes increased from 7 to 38% between 1938 and 1983. The Electric Power Research Institute estimates that 150 million tons (137 Mt) of coal were cleaned by heavy-media processes in 1986, and that this number may increase to 265 million tons (241 Mt) by 1990.2 Dense medium separations include those coal preparation processes that clean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid having a density intermediate between clean coal and reject. As there is a general correlation between ash content and specific gravity, it is possible to achieve the required degree of removal of ash-forming impurities from a raw coal by regulating the specific gravity of the separating fluid. Dense medium processes generally offer the following advantages over other coal cleaning processes: • Ability to make sharp separations at any specific gravity within the range normally required even in the presence of high percentages of raw coal whose specific gravity is near the specific gravity of separation. • Ability to maintain a separating gravity that can be controlled within + 0.005 sp gr units. • Ability to handle a wide range of coal sizes. • Ability to change specific gravity of separation to meet varying market requirements. • Ability to handle fluctuations in feed, in terms of both quantity and quality. Unfortunately, dense medium processes can have the following disadvantages: • Relatively high capital costs caused primarily by the need for equipment to collect and recycle the medium. Relatively high operating costs caused primarily by operation of medium recycle equipment and loss of medium.

"Above ground, elevated belt conveyors with span >200m between support points can cross valleys, rivers, forests and buildings with minimal footprint. The Cable Bridge Conveyor is a new type of suspension bridge based belt conveyor system that has long span between support points. It combines typical belt conveyor and the improved simple suspension bridge to form a conveyor bridge. The improved simple suspension bridge places a widened bridge deck directly on suspended cables, without the need for high truss towers. The benefits include reduced cost and increase aerodynamic stability compared to conventional suspension bridges. The Cable Bridge Conveyor’s compatibility with current belt conveyors allows the versatility in application. INTRODUCTION Belt conveyor is a ubiquitous material handling system. Conveyors can be placed directly on ground or elevated above ground by support structures. Considerations of cost, design, environment, civil work, safety and process requirements are all factors in choosing the ground based or elevated conveyors (1). The ground based conveyor has the lowest structural cost, where the conveyor is laying on an existing road. Maintenance access is easy and straight forward. Compared to the ground based conveyor, the elevated conveyor can cross existing buildings and structures, give passage to traffic beneath the conveyor, has smaller footprint, and requires less civil work to pass mountainous areas. The drawback of the elevated conveyor is higher structural cost, which can be compared with savings in civil work and other benefits. Conventional elevated conveyors are supported by rigid truss type structures, with typical span of 15m to 25m between concrete support bents or steel trestles. Triangular truss, using steel pipes instead of hot rolled steel sections, is more efficient. The typical span of triangular truss supported conveyor is around 30m to 40m, while the weight is about 10% less than conventional box truss with shorter span (2). Long span elevated structure based on suspension bridge is another step forward in increasing the distance between support bents, reaching 100m~400m and beyond. The very wide distance between support points of an elevated conveyor offers unique benefits. The conveyor can cross rivers, valleys, highways, forests and other obstacles with minimal footprint and reduced civil work. The versatility from long span conveyors makes bulk material transportation over previously impossible terrains now a feasible option."

"The topic of ground movements in Germany has been studied extensively in the past, especially in the field of active mines. The active hard coal mines were finally shut down in 2018 in Germany and lignite mining is expected to take place only until 2038. The so-called long-term liabilities of the mine operators in Germany include, among other things, the long-term guarantee of stability and thus the monitoring of ground motion.So far, the economic use of underground mining in Germany was mainly the supply of raw materials. In the future, the underground storage of compressed air, methane, or hydrogen will play an important role in renewable energy supply and climate change. Therefore, underground storage space will become more important and spatial planning is essential to ensure availability of safe underground openings for the various options of environmentally friendly energy storage.However, this renewed usage of underground openings may also bring new and sometimes unknown challenges of geomechanical influence. On the one hand, the aftermath of hard coal and lignite mining will be an increasing challenge in mining subsidence engineering. On the other hand, new possibilities due to underground spatial planning may lead to subsidence and/or heaving of the upper surface.INTRODUCTIONBoth hard coal and lignite have a long tradition in Germany. The Prosper Haniel mine in the Ruhr area was closed at the end of 2018 after 150 years, which signalled the end of hard coal production in Germany. Lignite mining still takes place in the Central German, Lausitz, and Rhineland districts. However, lignite mining in Germany is expected to be phased out gradually by 2038 (MDR, 2019). With the closure of these mines, however, mining damage is not over. The long-term consequences of mining, which extend far beyond the closure of the mines, are associated with the liability and responsibility of the individual mining companies. The so-called eternity burdens on the mining company continue to apply. In the field of lignite production, the discontinuation of dewatering and the resulting possible elevations of the surface will be a relevant topic for the future of mine surveying. The same applies to the hard coal mines, which are partially flooded in Germany and therefore require extensive monitoring of soil movements in the future.The discontinuation of energy from hard coal and lignite calls for a change in the energy mix. With the renewable energy revolution in Germany, the focus is on a sustainable and environmentally compatible climate and energy policy based on renewable energies. Sustainable use of the subsoil, both natural and anthropogenically produced cavities, will play an essential role in the objectives of this policy. For example, disused mine cavities can be used to store electricity from renewable energy sources. (Umwelt Bundesamt, 2018) These functions will again cause classical ground movements such as subsidence and uplift, but will also bring new challenges for the mine surveyor. Challenges can be underground cavity exploration in inaccessible areas or legal aspects of underground competition."

The effects of operating variables on water transport to the over- flow, classification of hydrophilic particles and the recovery of copper and molybdenum from a low-grade porphyry ore are presented. Recoveries of copper and molybdenum exceeding 90 percent at a grade of 8 percent Cu and 0.2 percent Mo were realized for minus 100 mesh (1 49 µm) material at retention times of less than 500 milliseconds. The rapid rate of flotation and the effective separation of fine particles for an air sparged hydrocyclone appear to be due to directed interaction of particles in a high force field with numerous freshly formed small bubbles. This interaction occurs in the swirl flow developed by the system and is analyzed in terms of collision and induction time phenomena.

Ion exchange technology is becoming more prevalent for metal recovery from low concentration solutions. The products of ion exchange are typically a metal free stream (product stream) and a concentrated metal stream (byproduct). The metals in the concentrate stream are usually precipitated and returned to the process or discarded. The unique features of emew® technology enable metals to be recovered directly from the concentrated stream. The advantage of the IX-emew® combination is the ability to have two product streams: 1) clean metal free solution and 2) metal product for sale. In addition to recovering metals from solution, it is also possible to separate metals from each other and recover more than one metal product. In this paper, examples of IX-emew® combinations are detailed including the recovery of copper, nickel and cobalt from an industrial waste stream, recovery of nickel from a spent electroless nickel plating solution and recovery of cobalt from an hydroxide cake.

Sinter mixes of three iron ore types were prepared with a range of water contents in a laboratory investigation. The mean diameter of the granulated mixes and the void fraction of beds of the mixes were determined experimentally. Pressure drop measurements over a range of flow rates were made in a laboratory permeameter with pressure tappings at several depths in the bed. The Ergun equation was applied to the results to determine the shape factor of the granulated mixes. The pressure readings down the bed were used to estimate the local void fraction in the bed using the Ergun equation and the calculated granule shape factors and it was found that there was a decrease in void fraction with depth in the bed. The significance of this and the variation of the shape factor values with the amount of water used for granulation is discussed in relation to the strength of granules of the sinter mixes.

With mine activity dating back to 1792, the Lehigh Valley, about 80 km (50 miles) northeast of the historic Allentown/Bethlehem steel mills and about 160 km (100 miles) northeast of Philadelphia, PA, defined early-day coal mining. Coal mining began just nine years after the end of America?s Revolutionary War. The high-carbon, clean-burning anthracite coal that was hand-dug from the Pennsylvania hills fueled the steam engines that powered the Industrial Revolution, helping build early steam ships and even the first automobiles. Around 1910, at the peak of the U.S.?s early mining effort, there were more than 250,000 men working underground ? 10,000 of them in the Lehigh Valley.

8.1 INTRODUCTION Under room and pillar mining if the extraction ratio is low, (i.e., < 50%) a pillar can support the overburden without collapse and there will be no surface subsidence whatsoever. In other words, if the pillar sizes are properly determined to support the overburden weight, the roof strata cannot cave and there will be no surface subsidence, provided the entry width is small and properly reinforced so that a continuous roof fall leading to piping or the total collapse of the roof does not occur. Under the prevailing mining conditions in the US if only development mining is em¬ployed in room and pillar mining (i.e., no pillar extraction), the extraction ratio is usually less than 50% and generally no surface subsidence will occur. If pillar mining is employed, surface subsidence may occur, depending on the extraction ratio and the size of the remnant pillars (or stumps) left in the gob. The higher the extraction ratio, the smaller the stump pillars left behind in the gob. As the size of the stump pillars becomes smaller, the possibility of their support¬ing the roof without collapse is smaller. If all stumps are crushed completely, the roof will collapse and surface subsidence will occur. Again, whether surface subsidence occurs, it depends on whether the remaining stumps can support the overburden or not. Therefore, since the weight of the overburden which the stump pillars have to support is proportional to the mining depth, a fixed¬size stump pillar can support the overburden at a shallow depth, but will collapse under greater depths. In this context extraction ratio is not the only parameter for determining whether surface subsidence will occur. Furthermore, during pillar mining a pillar can be cut away in many ways to finally reach the same extraction ratio. Therefore, the safest way to determine whether or not sur¬face subsidence will occur in room and pillar mining is to compare the strength of all stump pillars in the panel of interest with the weight of the overburden that the pillars have to support. If they are too small to support the overburden, surface subsidence will occur. Under normal mining practices the characteristics of surface subsidence profiles vary with methods of mining. In the US there are two types of coal mining methods, i.e., longwall and room and pillar mining. Longwall mining is indisputably a total extraction method, but different percentages of coal recovery are achieved in room and pillar mining. Recovery is much higher for sections with pillar extraction than those without pillar extraction. For those without pillar extraction, coal recovery increases with increasing entry width or decreasing pillar size. For those with pillar extrac¬tion, the total coal recovery depends on the amount of coal ex¬tracted from each pillar which is in turn dependent on the roof conditions and methods of pillar extraction. Bauer and Hunt (1981) analyzed the characteristics of the subsidence profiles due to the three types of mining methods in Illinois. Fig. 8.1 shows the range of locations associated with the following profile features: profile edge, maximum tensile curvature, maximum slope, maxi¬mum compressive curvature, and maximum subsidence. The scat¬ter of the data increases with decreasing percentages of extraction. The profile is much sharper for longwall mining and becomes milder as percentage of extraction decreases; for longwall mining the profile edge is always beyond the opening, while in room and pillar mining it may fall within. The location of maximum tensile strain moves outward, while that of the maximum compressive strain moves inward as the percentage of extraction decreases and the maximum subsidence decreases with decreasing extraction ra¬tio. The general concepts discussed in this chapter may not apply to the entry development sections between two longwall panels where roof caving in both panels are very severe and overlap each other. Consequently, it must be treated differently. 8.2 CASE STUDIES Kohli et al. (1982) described several case studies on surface subsidence due to room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. In one case, the seam was 6 ft thick and ranged from 650 to 800 ft deep. The panel was 720 ft wide (Fig. 8.2) and was developed with seven entries. Each entry was 18 ft wide and the pillars were driven at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Dur¬ing retreating, two additional pillars (pillars J and K) were devel¬oped, two blocks ahead of the pillar line, to take the barrier pillar, 160 ft wide, between panel No. I and No. 2. Pillar extraction began by taking a central slice across the whole panel, beginning from pillar 0 through J. After that, each pillar was sliced by 6 wing-slices, 3 on each side, leaving 4 stumps, 2 on each side. One of each pair was triangular shaped approximately 6 ft wide by 26 ft long. The other was trapezoidal, 26 ft long by 16 ft and 10 ft wide at the upper and lower bases, respectively. This resulted in a total extraction ratio of 85% within the panel. Obviously the stump pillars were not large enough to support the overburden and col¬lapsed completely. The final subsidence profiles were rather smooth, just like those under total extraction (Fig. 8.3). The max¬imum subsidence on Lines A and B was about 3 ft for an average mining height of 6 ft, but the locations of the maximum subsidence were skewed toward panel No. 1. Along Line D, the central por¬tion was flat-bottomed, but the maximum subsidence was only 2 ft, mainly because Line D was only two blocks from the right-side edge. Notice in every profile there was heaving of as much as 0.3 ft, beyond the edges above the solid coal. In another case (Fig. 8.4), the seam was 6 ft thick under 650 to 850 ft cover. Three panels, 710, 400, and 350 ft wide, respec¬tively, were extracted side by side. The entries were 18 ft wide and the pillars at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Pillar extraction was practiced the same way as described previ¬ously. According to the mine maps, there was no barrier pillar left between the adjacent panels. Thus after extraction the three panels formed a common gob of more than 1460 ft wide. This was re¬flected in the development of the subsidence profile along the county road. After Panel No. I was mined, the maximum subsi¬dence of 1.2 ft occurred at Monument No. 1. This was increased to 1.6 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 2 and went to a further 1.8 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 3. The final maximum subsidence of 4.3 ft occurred at Monuments No. 6 through No. 8, while the remaining portion of the county road showed rebound. However it must be noted that the subsidence profiles were rather bumpy and fluctuated, perhaps an indication of the irregular stump pillars that were left and crushed at various time after mining. Performance of mineral filler particles in ceramic applications can be enhanced markedly by adsorbing polymers of optimum molecular structure and dosage. In a recent work by Chen and Somasundaran (1997), a novel scheme of controlled polymer adsorption was used to produce nanocomposites of unique core-shell designs. Towards this purpose, adsorption and desorption behavior of selected polyacrylic acids (PAA) on three minerals; alumina, titania, and silicon carbide, was examined as a function of relevant parameters. Adsorption of P AA was found to depend on polymer molecular weight, pH, as well as solids loading. Specifically, the adsorption density was found to increase with increase in polymer molecular weight for non-porous alumina while it was found to decrease in the case of porous alumina. This is attributed to the inaccessibility of the pores to the larger polymers. An unexpected finding was the change in the adsorption density of PAA with solids loadings. PAA adsorbs on silicon carbide only at low pH values when the particles have very low surface charge suggesting that the adsorption in this case is controlled by electrostatic forces. Using polyacrylic acid as bridging agent between the alumina fillers (core) and nanosize alumina or titania particles (shells), controlled layer by layer deposition of nanoparticle on the core particle surface could be obtained.

The consistent occurrence of organic carbon early in the paragenesis of Mississippi Valley-type sulfide deposits suggests a genetic link between organic carbon and the sulfide ores. Reduction of sulfate in the mineralizing solution by organic carbon at the sites of mineralization is commonly proposed as the precipitation mechanism for these deposits, but inorganic sulfate reduction is too slow to be important to the chemistry of the ore zone, and bacteria, which catalyze sulfate reduction at low temperatures, are not known to survive at the temperatures of mineralization. Sulfate reduction with or without bacteria is not consistent with the sulfur Isotope evidence. Sulfur isotope studies also indicate that the derivation of sulfur from hydrocarbon at the sites of mineralization is unlikely. Organometallic complexing may be involved in the transport of metals, but no plausible mechanism for breaking these complexes at the sites of mineralization has been proposed. Reduction of partly oxidized sulfur species in the mineralizing solution by organic carbon at the sites of mineralization is a possibility which deserves further scrutiny.

Sedimentation is used to clarify process effluents or to thicken process slurries. The sedimentation cycle of a suspension is presented as a settling curve. This curve is simply a plot of the height of the interface between the settled suspension and clear liquor versus time. Figure 1 shows a series of graduate cylinders which contain a suspension at various stages in its settling cycle. Cylinder 1 shows the suspension completely mixed at time zero. After a brief period of time (see cylinder 2), the suspension is observed to settle from its initial height Ho to height H1, leaving behind a volume of clear (or turbid) liquor, called the supernatant. The interface between the supernatant and suspension is termed the mud line. It is also possible to distinguish at the bottom of the cylinder a layer of sludge representing solids which have settled from the suspension. The interface between it and the suspension is called the sludge line. The sludge line moves upward in the cylinder.

Mining in the Colorado Springs coal field took place from the 1880&apos;s to 1940&apos;s. The depth of mining in the coal field varied from about 10 meters to over 150 meters. Review of sequential historical aerial photographs from 1937 to 1960 indicated about 2400 chimney subsidence sinkholes had developed throughout the study area. Statistical analyses of the location and size of these sinkholes with respect to the time since mining, depth of mining, mined thickness and type of mining indicated definite trends in the time of occurrence, size, and location of these features. This data is valuable in the assessment of potential future subsidence in this and other areas of similar mining conditions.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PaDEP) has been issuing surface mining permits since 1984 that authorize remining in areas that will affect preexisting pollutional discharges. These permits require the mine operator to employ best management practices to reduce pollution loading from abandoned mine discharges. A total of 110 completed mining operations with 233 discharges were evaluated to determine the impact to water quality. Overall, acid loading from these discharges was reduced by 7, 200 kg (15, 900 lbs) per day or 61%. Metal loadings were also reduced. For acidity, 49% of discharges improved or were eliminated, 52% showed no significant change and fewer than 1 % got worse. Loading reductions resulted from a combination of reduced concentrations and lower flows.

Introduction As the US and world population increases, so does the problem of supplying expanding energy needs. Early requirements worldwide were mostly met by abundant forest vegetation. Man&apos;s large scale use of minerals-energy resources is a fairly recent development. It occurred only during the past 200 years. Coal was the first mineral fuel to be used extensively. It was not a large factor in US energy production until the beginning of the 19th century. Petroleum and natural gas use is about 125-years-old. Electricity generation by falling water is about a century old. Atomic energy is only about 30-years-old. Extensive use of it is still in the future. Solar energy is in its infancy. Other energy sources such as wind, peat, and geothermal energy are minor and primarily of local importance. There were three main features of the fuel supply picture during the past 125 years. By 1900 coal replaced wood as the principal energy source. Since 1900, oil and gas have captured many coal markets. And after the mid-1970s, there was a resurgence of coal usage. (Figs. 1 and 2). Wood Until the advent of mineral fuels for energy, the major global energy source was wood. But populations increased and became centered in towns and cities. The problem of a sufficient energy supply first developed as nearby, easily obtained wood was exhausted. This problem became more acute as industries such as shipbuilding, smelting, and pottery making, became more widespread. Results of wood use as an energy source and building material are starkly evident in areas of the world where civilization is oldest. Entire forests were consumed and have never been replaced. In the US, wood supplied 90% of all fuel requirements until about 1850; and more than 50% until after 1880. By 1900, wood still supplied 20% of all energy uses. In the mid-1970s, energy costs increased, due largely to the oil embargo. This increase resulted in an increased wood demand for domestic heating. While large quantities of wood were being used, its share of the total energy market was still less than 3%. By 1983, wood was becoming increasingly scarce and more costly near most large US cities. Wind Wind powered ocean vessels for many centuries. Sailing ships were still common in 1900. Windmills provided an early, cheap energy source and continue to be used today on farms. Design and development of windmills for electricity generation is being conducted. Interest in wind power is growing worldwide where availability of wind currents warrants the investment. Also, US regulation requires power companies to "buy back" electricity generated by windpower in excess of that used by the windmill owner. Coal By the 1600s, England was producing, 900 kt/a (1 million stpy) of coal for heating and other uses. The first coal-fired blast furnace for iron smelting was developed in 1621. Coke-making was developed in 1755, and Watt invented the steam engine in 1769. Illuminating gas made from coal was introduced in London in 1800. During this same 200-year period, France and Germany developed coal production, but on a smaller scale than England. US, bituminous coal was mined near Richmond, VA, as early as 1748. Major bituminous coal-producing states in the early period were Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, and Maryland. West Virginia replaced Virginia as a major producer, when that state was formed in 1863. As the US expanded west, new coal deposits were found and exploited. Indiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Washington, Colorado, Wyoming, Arkansas, Oklahoma (Indian Territory), Montana, New Mexico, and Texas had significant coal mining operations by 1900. Today the eight major coal producing states are Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Virginia, Wyoming, and Montana. These states accounted for about 80% of all coal (lignite, bituminous, and anthracite) produced in the US during the past several years.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the former U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) have put significant effort over the past four decades into researching and developing engineering controls and interventions to reduce mine workers’ dust exposures during the bagging and palletizing of industrial minerals. Workers who perform the manual bagging and palletizing of 50- to 100-lb bags typically have some of the highest dust exposures of all workers at mining and mineral processing operations. This paper provides an overview of available dust control technologies for bagging operations and presents the findings of a recent case study conducted at four industrial sand operations to identify the current types of bagging and palletizing technologies being used and to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing workers’ exposures to respirable crystalline silica dust. An evaluation is also performed to determine if further reductions in respirable dust levels can be achieved by incorporating additional modifications or improvements into the existing technology.

Although some of the prevalence of openpit production scheduling software can be explained by the predominance of openpit mining throughout the world, other factors have led to a lag in corresponding underground software. We explain mathematically why underground production scheduling is more difficult than its openpit counterpart and provide directions for research in the underground scheduling arena.

A realistic simulation model has been used for designing longwall mining, especially for solving operational problems. This paper describes background, development, validation and some applications of the simulation model for mining people who are unfamiliar with O.R. or computer technique, as a simple planning tool. The following items were established: logical analysis and algorithmic design for practical longwall mining, structure of hypothesis behavioral organism, input parameters, using practical knowledge and operational statistics of the mechanized longwall system experienced for many years.

"SUMMARY Injection grouting in rock around tunnels is used to reduce or stop water inflow. Little is known about the distribution of pressure within the rock mass during and after grouting. Instrumentation was developed to record pressure at the back of the packers inside the rock mass during injection grouting in order to improve our understanding of the process. Using this equipment measurements inside multiple injection holes during injection pumping have been made during several rounds of injection grouting in a tunnel. The data has been compared to the data recorded on the grout pumping rig and analysed to gain an understanding of the behaviour of grout injection process in the rock mass. The initial results are reported in this paper. INTRODUCTION Construction of a tunnel in soil or rock below the ground water table frequently results in the flow of ground water into the tunnel if the ground is permeable or fractures conductive. The injection of cement or chemical based grouts is frequently used during tunnel construction to reduce flow of water into a tunnel. Significant water flow into a tunnel is undesirable for several reasons: • there is a high cost in pumping out water over the lifetime of a tunnel; • drips and flows of water have to be diverted from the roadway or track; • where freezing conditions occur there is the possibility of ice build up and; • ground water levels may be changed possibly affecting surface water such as causing drainage of lakes and ponds, and changes in vegetation. Grout injection is most effectively done ahead of excavation to ensure that the grout penetrates the ground. Where heavy flows of water already occur into a tunnel the grout may be washed out before it sets. Normal practice in ground where water flows are encountered is to inject grout in a number of long holes ahead of the face with outer holes forming a ring around the proposed tunnel excavation – eventually forming a shield of grouted rock around the final tunnel, Figure 1. The holes may be sealed off a couple of metres into the rock with an expandable rubber plug around a pipe through which the grout can be injected, Figure 2. A one-way valve in the plug stops the grout from flowing back out of the hole when pumping stops and avoids grout flowing out through neighbouring holes. The rubber packer with a one-way valve permanently installed in the injection hole precludes the measurement of pressure down the hole when pumping is stopped."

General mining practices at W. R. Grace&apos;s Bonny Lake mine are much the same as those used in open pit phosphate mines in Central Florida, except for the difference in the depth of the overburden which introduces many variations, From 1945 to 1961 the mining at Bonny Lake has been from an area in which the overburden averages from 55 to 60 feet and in several locations exceeded 65 feet. The matrix thickness will average 15 to 18 feet for the areas mined. As you can see from the above depths a total hole depth will average from 70 to 75 feet.
