The earthquake locations are generally scattered mainly due to a simplified velocity model or seismic event picking errors. The aim of our research was to increase the resolution of the cloud of microseismic events recorded during mining activity in the Bobrek hard coal mine on the 3/503 coalface to delineate seismically active structures using unsupervised machine learning algorithms. We presented results of applying two completely different algorithms for reducing scatter in microseismic location to all events recorded during mining activity on the coalface - the collapsing (proposed by Jones and Stewart in 1997) and condensation (proposed by Kamer in 2015). The collapsing method simplifies the seismic cloud by shifting events inside their error ellipsoids towards local source densities. The error ellipsoids are determined by errors in the measured parameters and seismic network configuration. The advantage of the collapsing method is the partial elimination of blurring of the microseismic cloud. The condensation method reduces the size of the set of seismic events without changing the geometrical information. The reduction of the number of seismic events in the catalog takes place through the condensation of localized events with larger uncertainty into events with lower uncertainty. The spatio-temporal analysis of microseismic events was performed separately on two processed clouds – collapsed and condensed one. We examined how collapsing and condensation methods affect the automatic detection of clusters of microseismicity using density-based spatial clustering of application with noise algorithms. We compared structures detected by the machine learning algorithms in both seismic clouds first created by collapsing and second by the condensation. We identified structures created by mining activity and structures related to the local tectonics activated by mining. The presented results are essential for the prediction of future tremors induced by the mining operation and tectonics and thus ensuring safety in the mine.

As a result of the Three Mile Accident and because of evidence indicating radiation protection problems, the U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) undertook a major effort, with the assistance of the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL), to analyze radiation protection programs at 47 commercially operated nuclear power plants. This effort, the health physics appraisal program (HPAP), using a modified management oversite and risk tree analytical logic methodology (MORT) which consisted of analytical trees with applicable questions for each tree, was subsequently extended to include USNRC licensed uranium mills. In the uranium mill appraisal, a team of four senior radiation safety professionals spent a week at each mill evaluating the total health physics program. Prior to the HPAP, the USNRC inspection efforts were designed to determine if the licensees were fulfilling the requirements of the code of federal regulations and the mills source material license. The HPAP, however, was designed and structured to facilitate an integrated look at the total program. It is also directed into areas for which explicit NRC regulatory requirements may not currently exist. The latitude of the HPAP was designed to allow professional judgement in the evaluation of program adequacy, because merely meeting the explicit regulatory requirements does not necessarily ensure an adequate and effective health physics program. The results of the first eight site visits and the generic health physics problems identified within the uranium milling industry will be identified in this paper.

This paper shows the metallurgical test results that led to the design of the heap leach facilities of Philex Mining Corporation. The design incorporates a water management model as process solution circulation is excessive with high rainfall intensity in the area. This poses problems in the operations requiring stringent controls than would be necessary in a less severe environment. The corporate perspective embraces on environmentally-sound mineral development. A budget is always provided to environmental management making certain that no industrial development is moved forward at the expense of the environment.

MINERALS INFORMATION PROGRAM Mineral data collection by the Federal Government actually began in 1882 with an appropriation by Congress to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although the Bureau of Mines was instituted in 1910, it was not until 1924 that the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of worldwide information on production, consumption, and availability of minerals became the responsibility of the Bureau. The objective of the Bureau's minerals information program is to maintain and provide reliable, timely, and comprehensive data for analysis of national minerals problems. This program is implemented by a staff of specialists who cover about 100 mineral commodities and the mineral industries of 168 countries. Data are also provided on the minerals industry on the State and county level. The specialists analyze information to identify trends and problems, forecast future U.S. and world supply and demand for the nonfuel minerals, and relate trends and developments to their impact on the domestic minerals industry. Data Sources and Publications The primary sources of data concerning the domestic minerals industry are the companies that produce, use, and trade in these minerals. Approximately 60,000 survey forms are sent to industry, on a monthly, quarterly, semiannual, or annual basis, to obtain the data. Domestic trade data are provided by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. Information on mineral developments abroad is developed by Bureau specialists from mineral reports supplied by U.S. embassies worldwide, from primary source documents, from a review of the technical mining literature, and from onsite mine and plant visits in foreign countries. The information is disseminated through a number of Bureau publications: "Mineral Industry Surveys" provide aggregated data on a monthly. quarterly, or semiannual basis to give timely information on the most important mineral commodities. "Mineral Commodity Summaries," published each January, provides preliminary annual data on supply and demand and discusses significant events of the previous year. The final data are published later in the "Minerals Yearbook," which is the definitive historical record for mineral statistics. "Mineral Facts and Problems," an encyclopedic work issued every 5 years, covers industry structure, technology, supply-demand analysis. economic factors, reserves, and forecasts of U.S. and world demand for individual commodities. "Mineral Perspectives" and "Mineral Issues" cover important international mineral developments and significant issues of current U.S. policy as they relate to minerals. Discussions and analyses of mineral trends and developments also appear in other Bureau publications, such as "Minerals and Materials" and "Information Circulars." These publications provide the basis for analysis and policy determinations by the Bureau and by virtually every Federal agency concerned with minerals, defense issues, the national economy, and foreign relations. The data are also used by industry in planning capital investments in mines and processing plants, by financial analysts, by U.S. delegations in their work with international commodity groups, and by a host of other minerals related organizations. Data Bases The data bases used by the specialists for preparing publications or in response to a continuous stream of inquiries include both those that contain individual commodity data from respondents, and those that are summary data bases on production, trade, capacity, employment and a number of other minerals-related items, not all of which are derived from data reported to the Bureau of Mines. The data bases maintained on the mainframes are not accessible by non- Bureau users. Early Proterozoic ore deposits in the Verde district at Jerome, Arizona have produced 33.7 million metric tons of ore (1893-1975). The United Verde and United Verde Extension deposits produced most of the ore that yielded 1,644,323,100 kg Cu plus large amounts of Au, Ag, and Zn. These deposits are situated on the fractured and hydrothermally altered apex of a large submarine rhyolitic extrusive (Cleopatra formation). Precambrian lithologies are penetratively deformed and at Jerome the Fl folds plunge steep to the NNW. For the past two decades the volcanogenic model has superseded the replacement theory of ore formation.

This project took a watershed approach in the evaluation of water-quality impacts from past mining activities and current restoration projects in the Bear Butte Creek basin, a small and well defined drainage in a heavily mineralized area of the northern Black Hills. The basin contains numerous inactive and abandoned mines as well as a currently active heap-leach surface gold mine. Bear Butte Creek normally loses all of its discharge to sinkholes in the Madison Limestone aquifer and thus can affect the water quality of this regionally important water resource. Water-quality data were analyzed, stream surveys were conducted, and two abandoned mine restoration projects were monitored to evaluate the effectiveness of the watershed approach and to identify practical remediation techniques that could be applied to other watersheds. A geographic information system (GIS) was developed to organize information on stream quality, abandoned mine locations, and other geologic and hydrologic data. The watershed approach toward assessing and reclaiming abandoned mines appears to be effective when compared to a point-source approach that might improve water quality at specific sites but not result in significant overall improvement to the watershed because of adjacent sources.

Two bench scale biochemical reactors (BCRs) were operated over a period of 3 months for the removal of uranium, radium, and selenium from mining influenced water (MIW). A BCR is an anaerobic reactor comprised of organic and inorganic substrate including woodchips, straw, sawdust, and limestone. Uranium and selenium are removed in a BCR by biological reduction of oxidized species (i.e., selenite, selenate) to less soluble forms (Pahler et al. 2007, Blumenstein et al. 2008, Rutkowski et al. 2013). It is believed that radium may be removed through absorption to the biomass in the BCR. The bench scale BCRs were constructed of 6 inch PVC columns with a top to bottom flow configuration. The bench influent water consisted of three different water ratios from two adit seeps. BCR hydraulic retention times of 24 to 36 hours were targeted during the study. Influent concentrations ranged from 19 ug/L to 1.86 mg/L for dissolved uranium, 12 ug/L to 270 ug/L for dissolved selenium, and 4.9 pCi/L to 24 pCi/L for radium 226. The average and maximum dissolved uranium removal was 93.6% and 98.5% respectively, the average and maximum dissolved selenium removal was 93.3% and 98.9% respectively, and the average and maximum radium 226 removal was 89.5% and 100% respectively.

"Mine refuge shelters are designed to protect mine workers from hazardous environmental conditions after a mine disaster, but high temperature and humidity levels inside these shelters may pose a significant safety risk. Due to the safety risks associated with human testing, detailed thermal models of shelters and human occupants have been developed using TAITherm simulation software. These models are used to predict the temperature and humidity within the shelter resulting from metabolic heating, evaporation due to sweat and respiration, moisture and heat from the shelter’s carbon dioxide scrubbing system, and heat transfer within the shelter. A detailed human thermoregulation model simulates the sensible and latent heat generated by the shelter occupants, and predicts the occupant’s body core temperature and moisture lost due to sweating and respiration. This information is used to assess the safety of the shelter. In this paper we will review technical details of the human thermal model, validation comparing the human model to human subject test data, and results of a mine shelter analysis. INTRODUCTION Portable mine refuge chambers are used in US coal mines to provide protection to mine workers from hazardous conditions following a traumatic event. Although these shelters are designed to supply clean air and sustenance for up to 96 hours, prolonged exposure to the mine shelter environment itself can pose a substantial risk to human safety. Heat generated by the shelter occupants combined with heat from the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing system can raise the shelter interior temperatures and relative humidity to dangerous levels that can lead to heat stress in humans. Unfortunately, the thermal burden associated with mine shelter exposure is not well characterized due to potential hazards associated with underground human subject testing. In order to assess the thermal burden on people within a mine shelter environment, a detailed thermal model was created to accurately predict the temperatures and humidity within the shelter, as well as the impact of these environmental conditions on human occupants. The model consists of a mobile inflatable tent-type mine shelter, 23 humans, and also includes the surrounding mine environment. The thermal simulations were performed using ThermoAnalytics' validated commercial heat transfer prediction code, TAITherm (v12.0). Additionally, TAITherm's Human Thermal Module (HTM) provided the capability to simultaneously model the thermo-physiology of 23 unique humans contained within the mine shelter. The human thermal models accounted for the thermal interaction with the environment and also provided a core temperature response prediction, which can be used to evaluate survivability in heat stress situations [1]."

What is prime farmland? Can such land, once it has been strip-mined for coal, be restored so that it will produce corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa? What methods or practices are necessary to bring about restoration within a reasonable time so that crop yields will be equivalent to or higher than those of unmined prime farmland under high levels of management? These questions concerned land use researchers in Illinois as early as 1948 when the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station experimented with growing cultivated crops on strip-mined land in St. Clair County (1). This research was done almost 30 years before requirements of Public Law 95-87 were passed by the United States Congress and signed August 3, 1977.

A detailed kinetic study of the flotation installation at the Metcalf Concentrator revealed a rougher flotation circuit operating under less than optimal conditions. Based on these results, a project was initiated to approximately double the rougher flotation capacity by increasing the installed volume from 780 cubic meters to 1,560 cubic meters. This project, which was completed in early 1991, replaced the existing cells with larger capacity cells. A comprehensive analysis of results demonstrates significant metallurgical benefits. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND The Metcalf Concentrator is located in Morenci, Arizona and is part of Phelps Dodge Morenci, Incorporated. Sumitomo Metal Mining of Arizona is a minority partner in the operation with 15% interest. The Metcalf Concentrator is the newer and smaller concentrator and operates in conjunction with the Morenci Concentrator. Operating capacity at Metcalf is currently 48,000 TPD of ore on a 365 days per year basis. The Metcalf Concentrator was commissioned in 1974 at a 30,000 TPD operating rate for the purpose of treating ores originating in the Metcalf Mine. The mine takes its name from the former town of Metcalf which was named for Robert Metcalf who was credited with discovery of the mineral district. The predominant ore mineral is chalcocite which occurs as a secondary enrichment closely associated with iron pyrite. The host rock is largely granodiorite and quartz monzonite. The original rougher flotation circuit consisted of a total of six rows of Wemco 8.5 cu. meter (300 cu.ft.) flotation machines treating pulp from the two grinding sections (Sections A and B). Each row was configured in a 4-4-4 arrangement. Shortly after startup the throughput rate was increased significantly without sustaining a recovery loss. This increase was achieved by raising the target value for the particle size of the cyclone overflow which is the rougher flotation feed. Shortly thereafter, the capacity of the pump and cyclone began to restrict further increases in throughput. After testing, two 66 cm. (26-in.) cyclones and a 12-in. X 12-in. centrifugal pump replaced the original classification equipment. As a result of these modifications, the grinding section could routinely process in excess of 42,000 TPD. Due to the increased tonnage rates, limitations in the rougher flotation circuit performance were observed. In an effort to improve the performance of rougher flotation with this higher throughput, the speed of the flotation mechanisms was increased from 230 RPM to 250 RPM. This change improved the suspension of the coarser feed and induced additional air into the pulp. It did, however, apply additional strain to the motors, shortening their life. At these elevated processing rates, it was found that the dart valves operated almost entirely at the top end of the control range and could not efficiently handle upsets from the grinding section. This was remedied by lowering the end overflow weir and allowing some of the tailings to overflow the end weir. However, in order to obtain acceptable recovery levels, the flotation pulp was maintained at a high level, adversely influencing the rougher concentrate grade.

Introduction and Historical Background State Geological Surveys have been deeply involved in industrial minerals from their inception beginning in the first half of the 19th Century. To Massachusetts belongs the credit of having carried out the first Geological survey under state auspices on the Western Hemisphere. One of the causes leading up to this survey was. Governor Lincoln's message to the legislature of May 29, 1830, from which I quote in part: "Much knowledge of the natural history of the country would thus be gained (from a geological survey), and especially the presence of valuable ores, with the localities and extent of quarries and of coal and lime formations, objects of inquiry so essential to internal improvements and the advancement of domestic prosperity, would be discovered.". Similar phraseology is present in practically all of the initial organic acts creating the first State Surveys. High on the list of priorities for these embryo surveys was an inventory of the mineral resources of the State with particular emphasis on the industrial minerals. Prom these early beginnings, the state surveys have developed a great wealth of geological data either directly or indirectly relating to the development of mineral resources. One can gain some conception of the effort that state surveys today place on industrial minerals studies by noting the projects in which they are engaged as reported in the State Geologists Journal. Better understanding of the mechanisms and kinetics of dissolution can benefit several industrial processes. For example, iron can be leached from clays, which can be further used as a raw material in the ceramic industry. Another important application is the regeneration of ceramic filter media, which are used in the dewatering of iron ores. Dissolution of iron oxides in mixtures of acids is fairly uncommon and a less well-understood phenomenon, but it can result in a more efficient process. This work also shows that the determination of dissolution mechanisms and kinetics is not straightforward in different acid systems.

After mope than fifty years Of Continuous operation, the Nevada Mines Division found itself faced with declining ore headings and metallurgical efficiencies, and rising operating costs. Although intensive process improvement programs had been initiated at various times in its history, insufficient return on investment served to defeat plans for any major changes in circuitry. The advent of practical large-volume flotation machinery, along with the success of long-range exploration drilling programs, complimented the results of an intensive program of research and development. The result of laboratory testing, pilot plant testing, and full scale plant tests was the proven indication of metallurgical improvement given increased flotation residence time and the effect of mechanical agitation in flotation.

Good morning, it is truly an honor to have been invited to speak before you today Before I begin my update on MSHA's activities, I?d Like t o quickly say a few words about the American mining congress and its mission in Washington, AMC is a national trade association representing most of the producers of the nation's metals, nonmetals and coal, we also represent the manufacturers of mining equipment and supplies and the financial and consulting institutions which service the mining industry. It is the diversity of our representation which gives us our greatest strength in our petitioning efforts, the administration and the members of congress know that an AMC position is the result of the careful consideration of a vastly diverse group of mining concerns. Our president, Al Overton, perhaps has the best description of AMC when he speaks of us as "the mining industry's eyes and ears and its collective voice in Washington."

The increasing scarcity of bentonite coupled with the potential of improved pellet strength have created a need for understanding the effects of thorough bentonite dispersion in taconite concentrate. It has been known for more than a decade that under certain conditions substantial savings of bentonite are realizable by using thorough mixing of bentonite as compared to poor mixing. Extensive work done by J. O. Zetterstrom l at the Univer¬sity of Minnesota indicated the effect of thorough bentonite mixing in a controlled laboratory testing. Commercial hardware was not available at the time Zetterstrom1 paper was published and not much work was done until R. L. Stone, J. M. Karpinsky2, did work with Muller mixing. Nabush 3 worked with the pugmill principle, and Hoogovens 4 and Robe River 5 used the fluidized bed principle. It was very hard to convince iron ore industries to improve the mixing of Bentonite and taconite for the following reasons: A. The initial capital investment for improved mixing equipment; B. The relatively low bentonite cost a few years back, which was not enough to justify new equip¬ment investment;

Planning a mining operation in Alaska will involve the investigation of many parameters common to mine planning anywhere. However, there are some unique circumstances that must be recognized when one considers development of mining operations in Alaska. This paper will not attempt to provide a blueprint for mine planning in Alaska, but hopefully will provide a better understanding of the truly unique nature of the northern latitudes. Given this understanding, the mine planner can better assess the potential hurdles along the road to a successful mining operation. The regulatory trend towards uniform standards for mining throughout the United States exemplifies the necessity for Alaska to prove its unique position in the natural resources picture. The factors which make Alaska truly different from the "Lower 48" can be summarized by four points 1) Remoteness and Size 2) Seasonable Extremes 3) Geologic Immaturity 4) Vegetation and Wildlife

Several years ago it was decided that ASARCO was in need of a good mine scheduling program to complete the computerized open pit mine planning package that was being used on new prospects and operating properties. A trial and error approach was being used to schedule a mine on a year by year basis, but this was time-consuming and far from offering an optimum solution l. Due to the magnitude of time and expertise required to develop such a sophisticated computer program, it was decided to search outside of the company for one already developed and available for purchase, This proved fruitless and therefore proposals were requested from consulting firms that had the expertise to develop such a program. Out of the five firms that submitted proposals, the one chosen was Systems Control, Inc., (S.C.I.) of Palo Alto, California. S.C.I. was selected because it was felt that they offered the greatest capability in the mathematical solution of complex problems. But due to their lack of mining expertise, a cooperative venture was developed whereby ASARCO would supply this mining knowledge. The selection of this vendor, the formulation of the contract and specifications, and the development of the computer program required about 3 years to accomplish.

The northern spur of the Bakhuis Mountains contains bauxite deposits on a dissected planation level, a region formerly indicated as the Adampada-Kabalebo area. Iron-rich laterites are ubiquitous on all more or less flat and horizontal to moderately sloping interfluves and planation levels. The known aluminous laterites and bauxites are restricted to those laterites that have relatively leucocratic and silica-poor parent rocks. The whole area is underlain by high-metamorphic Precambrian. In the northern half of the Guiana Shield at least four Cainozoic planation levels can be distinguished. The bauxite and aluminous laterite deposits are related to the oldest, Early Tertiary level. These deposits, occupying the highest positions in the present day landscape, show the destructive influence of post-laterite weathering, erosion and denud- ation; they are erosion remnants and as such are of irregular thickness, grade and shape. Consequently, exact mineable tonnages can only be determined after intensive and detailed sampling and evaluation, taking into account the latest technical and economic parameters. The bauxite potential of the region is negatively influ- enced by the complicated uplift history of the Bakhuis horst, and positively by the presence of suitable parent rock and possibly more than one phase of bauxitization.

In October, November and December, teachers at the National Science Teachers' Association (NSTA) area conventions were lured to visit the Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) booth by the promise of free rocks, video tapes, and literature on earth science topics. Teachers were content to stand in lines that at times took as much as an hour and a half to progress through the exhibit. Adding to their interest was the opportunity to converse with people from the minerals industry who were staffing the booth. The MEC was formed by a group of associations and companies in the minerals industry. They felt the need to educate the public about the current-day minerals industry and how it affects everyone's life. The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, Inc. (AIME) underwrote the major expenses of exhibit space and exhibitor services at all three conventions in 1997. SME members have been active in staffing and chairing the NSTA exhibit booth. But they represented only about one-third of the volunteers for the booth. Additional volunteers were drawn from local minerals companies, associations, interested teachers and other support groups. (See donors list on page 64.) In 1997, the conventions were held in Pittsburgh, PA, Denver, CO and Nashville, TN. The local SME GEM Committees chaired Pittsburgh and Denver and The Rogers Group Inc. supplied the chairperson in Nashville. Each exhibit relies on a local committee to plan and run the booth. Support is available from the GEM Projects Coordinator at SME headquarters. Usually the chair of the committee is drawn from the local SME membership. It is easy to see why the MEC booth is so popular. Free literature, videos, posters, workshop packets and rock specimens were handed out to about 5,500 science teachers at the three sites. Feedback from the attending teachers was overwhelmingly positive: "Who do we thank for these great materials?" Some of those great materials included Caterpillar's outstanding donation of Common Ground videos and teacher packets for Pittsburgh, Denver and Nashville for every teacher expected to attend. Placer Dome sent enough What's a Mine coloring books and It Comes from a Mine activity books for teachers at all three sites. Newmont supplied all teachers with an excellent poster describing gold processing. Women in Mining Education Foundation had plenty of its classroom activity handouts. The American Coal Foundation provided a list of its educational materials that are given out free to teachers who request them on school letterhead. The National Mining Association had its Facts About Minerals and Facts About Coal available. US Borax provided the funding to reproduce the NMA black and white posters that were published as inserts in Mining Voice magazine. In addition, each site had other materials chosen by the local committees to round out their selections. At each exhibit site, committees raise between $8,000 and $12,000 in cash donations from industry to support the high overhead of producing this exhibit. Usually, there are between 12 and 18 different rock specimens representing a range of mineral ores from aggregates to the metal ores. The committee arranged to have these donated (along with the freight charges to ship them to the site). Literature is also donated by the industry. It covers a diverse spectrum from basic information on rocks and minerals to posters, flow charts, videos and coloring books. Other donations include storage space before the event, haulage of items to the hall and door prizes. These exhibits could not have been staged without the network of SME Local Sections and the able chairs and committees at each site. At this time, credit should be given to their extensive donation of time and effort.

Research shows chat certain expectations which prompted geologists to change careers are fulfilled while other unanticipated expectations often are also met.
