2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) is a heterocyclic-mercaptan and belongs to a group of molecules containing nitrogen and sulfur as electron donor atoms. MBT has been employed as a collector in flotation under names of MBT, Captax, and Flotagen. It is a major constituent of reagents in the 400 series of the American Cyanamid Co. Current applications of the reagent include flotation of copper minerals, tarnished or oxidized lead, copper activated sphalerite, and nickel ores. It has been used successfully in the flotation of pyrite in acid circuits in the range of 4 to 5.

At the turn of the century the keys to industrial success were coal and iron. At that time, Pennsylvania was the ranking mineral producer among the States and close to 90% of the Nations energy output was generated by coal. The growth of this Common-wealth into the greatest industrial State in the nation has been due to the huge resources of easily accessable coal found by the early settlers. It was the development of these deposits that provided the United States with a new source of fuel energy. For nearly a century, the Commonwealth was the chief powerhouse of our nation and the chief source of its industrial blood and bone. In 1928 it was truly said that coal was king in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania that year mined a billion dollars worth of coal. A single train carrying this output would reach more than twice around the world at the latitude of Pennsylvania. Coal formed nearly 67% of the freight of Pennsylvania and was responsible for its four billion dollar iron and steel industry. Coal was the real reason why Pennsylvania although 32nd in size was second and not tenth or fifteenth in wealth, population and industry. Pennsylvania was slow to take-up her heritage as the greatest coal producing State in the union. But the knowledge that coal was present was not slow in accumulating. In fact the Indians were aware of its existence long before the white man arrived. They knew that many of the hills were underlain with black stones that would burn. It is reasonably certain that Arnold Viele, the first white man to cross the mountain in this State saw coal in them in 1692. But awareness was not enough. The population in these days was confined to southeastern corner of the State and the population at this time had little need or interest in the resources further inland. Pennsylvania anthracite was discovered in 1762 but was first regarded only as a curiosity. Commercial productions started in 1820. This stimulated the development of many native industries and extensive canal system and afterwards an elaborate net-work of railroads were constructed at great costs to bring the products of the hard

Several research groups have spent considerable time investigating coarse ore leaching. Coarse ore leaching includes both heap and dump leaching. The term "heap leaching" will be used in this paper to mean any type of coarse ore leaching. The results of their work are generally in agreement: the progress of leaching can be described by the shrinking core model and its associated mathematics. The shrinking core model is schematically represented in Figure 1. The particle is contacted by the leach solution on its outside surface and the solution migrates inward by filling the pores on the particle. As the solution filling the pores comes in contact with grains of ore mineral the reagent chemically reacts with the ore mineral to solubilize the contained metal. The solubilized metal diffuses outward to the particle surface and is washed away by the leach solution flowing past the particle. The leaching reagent in the particle interior is replenished by the diffusion of reagent from the surface of the particle to the interior of the particle. If the chemical reaction between the leaching reagent and the ore mineral is relatively fast compared to the diffusion rate of the reagent in the solution in the pores of the particle then leaching proceeds from the outside of the particle inward resulting in a "shrinking core" of unreacted ore surrounded by a "leached shell". The rate controlling step in the reaction can initially be a chemical reaction between the reagent and the ore mineral grain, however, once the reaction has proceeded a short period of time diffusion of the leaching reagent through the leached shell will be the slow step and hence the rate controlling step in the production of metal from an ore particle.

"This paper discusses how an existing grey cast iron segmental tunnel lining responds to construction of a new SCL tunnel transversely beneath with zero clearance; how the damage assessment for the existing tunnel was conducted for impact of longitudinal movement; how the tunnel is subsequently instrumented to observe both movement and stress manifestation at its longitudinal connections and how the results from the instruments compare with the prediction. An assessment of neutral axis of the tunnel in longitudinal flexure is also explored using interpolated horizontal displacement data from a conventional monitoring system. INTRODUCTION The Royal Mail Tunnel (RMT) (formely Post Office Tunnel or ‘Mailrail’) was constructed using semi-mechanised deep level construction techniques from 1914 and 1917 (Lee 1938). Commencing full commercial operation in 1926, the system was until 2003; conveying parcels the 6.5 miles between seven sorting offices in the center of London, and linking the system with main line rail stations, Paddington and Liverpool Street (The British Postal Museum & Archive 2013). A single tunnel of 2.74m internal diameter facilitated a bi-directional twin narrow-gauge (~611mm gauge) railway road system for electric driverless operation. The tunnel lining is segmental grey cast iron (grade 10) made up of six flanged segments and a smaller flanged key segment; constructed into a ring of width 508mm The external diameter of the tunnel is 2.971m. For further details of the tunnel lining and material properties are outlined by (Devriendt & Alhaddad 2014).London Underground Bond Street Station is a major station of the London Underground system in the very center of London; in its vicinity, the RMT runs west-east perpendicularly above the north south Jubilee Line tunnels. Historic survey record of the Jubilee Line’s (the then Fleet Line) construction in 1974 and its impact on the RMT case is documented in (Crossrail 1993): it is one of only a hand full of case-studies frequently cited when assessing the impact of new construction scenarios of this type; not least including the assessment of the same tunnel, at the same site some 40 years later, and the subject material for this paper: It noted significant vertical displacement of ~90mm to the RMT without noticeable serviceability or operational impediment."

INTRODUCTION In this section, it is assumed that the reader is an engineer with sufficient training in underground mining work, preferably with budgetary control, to understand the mining methods outlined in other sections of this handbook. The mining-method descriptions are not repeated herein; only sufficient information is provided to enable the reader to comprehend the development of the costs presented. All costs are in 1977 US dollars, except where explicitly stated otherwise. CAPITAL INVESTMENT The capital investment in the underground mining portion of any mining property includes the following: 1) The development of original access involving adits, shafts, declines, etc. It includes the necessary equipment for transporting men, materials, and rock. 2) The purchase of mine equipment including loaders, underground haulage equipment, fans, pumps, electrical distribution, surface facilities associated with the underground mine, etc. 3) Sufficient preproduction mine development to assure steadily increasing production after startup. De- pending upon the mining method used, the preproduction development should provide a supply of three months to one year of ore that is developed and is ready to be stoped. Underground development also includes excavations other than shaft stations, loading pockets, sumps, etc., which usually are associated with the means of access and are excavated by the contractor. These excavations could include a crusher cavern, an ore- storage pocket, and underground workshops that may or may not be included by the shaft-sinking contractor. Portions of these could be delayed until after production begins, but it is preferable to complete them during the development phase, so there is no interference with the production buildup. 4) The staff and labor costs for all phases from inception through final production. 5) The provision of mine-surface equipment and facilities strictly applicable to the underground portion of the operation. The required facilities include a changehouse with a lamp room, a first-aid station, compressors, an electrical substation, workshops, a ware- house, water pipelines to the concentrator, water storage tanks, explosive storage, etc. A concrete-batch plant, a sand-fill plant, and boilers for heating may be required. 6) Other direct and indirect costs. 7) Engineering, design, and procurement costs. 8) Contingency allocations. 9) Contractor's fees, startup costs, and owner's costs. Original Access As part of a study for the US Bureau of Mines, Dravo Corp. conducted an extensive literature research survey covering underground operations in the United States between 1963 and 1973. Table 1 is compiled from the section of that study pertaining to the types of access to underground mines. Table 1 does not include distances attributable to the deepening of existing shafts, nor does it include shafts bored by raise drills or downhole machines that need existing underground workings for the disposal of the cuttings. During the period under review in the report ( 1963 through 1973). concrete-lined circular vertical shafts were the predominant means of providing the first access to a new underground mine; these shafts accounted for 80% of the original access in terms of the number of accesses completed, and 75% in terms of the total verti- cal linear distances. "When considering large-scale infrastructure projects worldwide special attention has to be paid to the large diameter tunnel construction projects that were successfully completed in the Southern Hemisphere. The projects that are highlighted in this paper are large-scale infrastructure projects in the sector of transport. In focus are four road tunnel projects that were constructed in Australia and New Zealand using mechanized tunnelling technology. The tunnel boring machines (TBMs) that were reliably applied to these four major projects all exceed the bore diameter of 12 meters. These TBMs are therefore in the range of large to very large diameter TBMs. The technology used demonstrates state of the art technology with tailored tunnelling technology adapted to the specific project demands. Two Double Shielded Hard Rock TBMs (Ø 12.35 meters) were used for the construction of the Clem Jones Tunnel in Brisbane crossing beneath the Brisbane River and these two machines have been reused for the excavation of a 4.3km long two-lane highway tunnel for Legacy Way in Brisbane creating a new traffic artery towards the city centre. Two EPB Shields (Ø 12.48 meters) excavated and lined the twin-tube road tunnel for the Brisbane Airport Link. Excavation diameters in excess of 14 meters, such as the Earth Pressure Balance Shield (Ø 14.41 meters) involved in the Waterview Connection Project in New Zealand, are understood in the tunnelling industry as very large diameters. The machine is customized to the requirements and subsurface conditions of Auckland. The paper spotlights the large to very large diameter TBMs that were used and focuses on the comprehensive solutions developed by the machine manufacturer to provide a system with benefits for the contractor especially for the Waterview Project. INTRODUCTION Extensive large-scale road infrastructure projects like the ones implemented in Brisbane (Australia) and currently under construction in Auckland (New Zealand) show the tendency of today’s infrastructure construction projects. Functional infrastructures need to be put in place to cope with the demand of mobility and flexibility of people living in cities and metropolises. Impact during construction work to people or environment has to be kept as low as possible to ensure the quality of life is not disrupted."

The most valuable gem- quality red beryl comes from the Wah Wah Mountains of south-western Utah (Fig. 1). Red beryl occurs as a secondary mineral in topaz rhyolite. Marketable crystals from the Wah Wah Mountains have been produced from the Violet Mine, operated on a limited scale since 1976 under the ownership of the Harris family of Delta, UT. From 1989 to 1995, production from the mine amounted to more than $3 million with an inventory of several million dollars of unsold gems (Harris, 1995). In 1994, Kennecott Exploration leased the mine and surrounding claims to determine reserves and feasibility of gem recovery. Mining and exploration activity are continuing. Previous work on red beryl has dealt mainly with crystallographic, chemical and optical properties of the crystals (Shigley and Foord, 1984) with only general descriptions of the geology (Ream, 1979). However, the conditions needed for formation of red beryl have not been well constrained. It is generally proposed that beryl originates by precipitation in fractures and vugs from high-temperature gases as they are released from slowly cooled rhyolite lava. Dozens of topaz rhyolite flows and domes, similar in composition to the beryl-bearing flow in the Wah Wah Mountains, occur across the western United States (Christiansen et al., 1986). All of these flows devitrified to form vapor-phase topaz and locally other vapor-phase minerals such as bixbyite, garnet, hematite, pseudo-broo- kite and fluorite. But the occurrence of beryl is rare. Even within the rhyolite flow that hosts the red beryl, the productive open pits comprise only a small fraction of the surface area of the flow. Apparently, the conditions that favor the formation of red beryl are rarely achieved. Geologic setting The rhyolite flow that hosts the red beryl deposit lies along the eastern flank of the Wah Wah Mountains (Fig. 1). Prevolcanic rocks consist of Proterozoic, Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks that were folded and thrust to the east during the Sevier orogeny. Cenozoic volcanism began about 34 Ma. It consisted mostly of large volume dacitic ash flows and lesser volumes of low- silica rhyolite and andesitic lava flows. Beginning about 23 Ma, the style and composition of volcanism changed to smaller-volume, ash-flow and dome-forming eruptions of high-silica rhyolite and trachyandesitic lava. These rocks form the Blawn Formation of which the beryl-bearing rhyolite is one member (Best et al., 1987). Abbott et al. (1983) reported a K-Ar age of 22.1 + 0.8 Ma for this flow. It is probably the oldest topaz rhyolite flow in the Wah Wah Mountains. A subsequent episode (12 to 13 Ma) of bimodal magmatism produced the Steamboat Mountain Formation. The rhyolitic part of that is locally topaz-bearing. Displacement on the late Cenozoic extensional faults that formed the north-trending mountain ranges began about 22 Ma. Geology of the Violet Mine The rhyolite that hosts the red beryl deposit is part of a flowldome complex that overlies nonwelded tuff of cogenetic origin. This rhyolite is exposed over an area of about 9 km2 (3.5 sq miles) (Fig. 1). An unknown additional portion of the rhyolite is concealed beneath younger mafic lavas and sediments.

Recently, noequilbrium electrokinetic measurements using laser-Doppler electrophoresis were reported by Miller et al. (1992) for alkali halides and the sign of their surface charge thus determined. These results are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory with KCI, under normal circumstances, being the most significant exception. In this regard, lattice defects (F centers and oxygen imperfections) have been found to influence the surface charge of KCI and its electrophoretic mobility. In particular, the presence of oxygen defect states in the crystal lattice has been found to be responsible for KCI's unexpected behavior. The concentration of oxygen defect states in KCI, as characterized by UV/Vis absorption, was varied in order to study their influence on the electrokinetic behavior and subsequently on the flotation response of KCl. At low oxygen contents « 60 ppm) KCI is positively charged as expected from lattice ion hydration theory. However, typically, KCI contains substantial oxygen (>300 ppm) sufficient to impart a negative surface charge which accounts for the selective flotation of KCI from NaCl by hetero-coagulation with oppositely charged alkyl amine hydrochloride collector colloids.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Mill Level Zone mine is one of the deepest block cave mines in the world and is in mountainous terrain in West Papua, Indonesia. The mineralization is hosted in a skarn deposit in a structural setting that is complex at the footprint, mine and regional scale. Large seismic events and significant episodes of rapid rock mass deformation are potentially critical geotechnical risks during this ramp-up stage of mining. Understanding the interaction between stress, strain, rock mass strength and geological structures is essential to minimize the hazard and engineer control measures to help ensure the safety of the employees while achieving production targets. This paper discusses how the seismicity and excavation damage have been shaped by the interactions between the mine and geological features, and how this affects strategic mining decisions. Additionally, the paper presents a summary of the mitigation measures used for mining the DMLZ in the safest and most productive way. These include improvements to geotechnical characterization of rock mass and structure, dynamic ground support designs, production scheduling for desirable cave propagation and a seismic monitoring system with re-entry protocols.

Innovation in the tilemaking ceramic industry is stressing properties like powder flowability, ability to toughen green tiles, so turning technological requirements of ball clays ever stricter in terms of plasticity, dispersion in water, rheological behavior, workability in the green state, refractoriness and firing colour. Technological performance of ball clays was improved by taking as benchmark the highest quality raw materials on the market. The mineralogy, plasticity, methylene blue index and ceramic response of the Patagonian ball clays are analogous to those of European clays, but improvement is needed to approach the highest quality materials. On this basis, the Frente A, Super, Puma, and Lote 8 deposits were selected and their characteristics enhanced by additions of highly plastic and white-firing corrective clays targeted on the benchmark. Porcelain stoneware formulations, containing improved ball clay mixes, were experimented at both laboratory and industrial scale. The improved ball clays behave like the best raw materials currently used, although modest changes occur in the mechanical properties, water absorption and whiteness of the fired products.

Somebody sure gave me the wrong title. I can talk much more freely about the impact of the anti-nuclear movement on the DRILLING industry in New Mexico. In a word, it is being "clobbered." It doesn't seem like very long ago that my brothers and I were busy trying to find enough new equipment (and trying to talk bankers into lending us enough money) to keep up with drilling work we could get. Seemed like no matter how hard we worked, and how much money we borrowed, we were always one step behind where we wanted to be. We had so many holes to drill that all our crews were working three shifts a day, and over several states. The nation needed energy, and we were ready to help supply it. Exploration and development drilling jobs were all going full-blast. We had trouble keeping up with them. With luck, we figured we'd be able to get all our equipment out of hock before all the necessary uranium mines were developed.

Tests were conducted to investigate the potential for recovering anthracite from preparation plant tailings. Samples were collected from tailings streams or slurry ponds of several anthracite cleaning plants. A washability analysis was conducted on each sample. The use of gravity-and surface-based cleaning processes for treating the 28x200 mesh tailings material was examined. Simulations were performed for various cyclone staging arrangements using published partition data for both water-only and dense-medium cyclones. Froth flotation testing was done on both precleaned anthracite and tailings material. Grade-yield curves were determined for various conditions.

"INTRODUCTION Dissolved salts build up in leach solutions over time as leach solutions mature. Iron can be particularly problematic for hydrometallurgical copper production as it can compete with copper for separation during solvent extraction (SX), leading to iron bleed through and reduced electrowinning (EW) efficiency. In its ferric form (Fe+3) it precipitates as a hydroxide at fairly low pH and can promote clogging and disrupted flow within leach pads as a result of localized pH deviations – such as might result from weather events. The solids formed can cause relatively irreversible degradation to pad productivity. The precipitation pH point for solids formation falls as the ferric (Fe+3) concentration increases, making the issue more prevalent as leach circuits for ore bodies containing appreciable iron get older. It can also be more of a concern when leaching lower grade ore like tailings where lower copper content may increase iron/copper ratios which may increase iron accumulation rates. Control of ferric (Fe+3) and ferrous (Fe+2) tenors and ratios may also provide benefit for improving sulfide ore leaching or bioleaching performance and effectiveness. The term sustainable development shortly appeared in international use in the run of UNO Environmental Protection Conference held in Rio de Janeim in 1992, bears the concept, that evolution process ( associated either with a region or society) should provide mutual interests concern in three aspects - environmental, economic and social ones, admitting as well the fact , that environmental protection should become an integral part of each process and cannot be regarded separately. In this connection it seems quite reasonable to employ the principal of sustainable development, while creating the model of industrial mastering the territory constraint lands viewing their future, for a example, in rich mineral deposit's development. In Kuznetsk coal basin in Russia ( west Siberia) the development of a big coal deposit Erunakovsky is now being underway. The major part of coal will be mined with open cast method, resulting the number of local environmental adverse impacts' occurrence. In such a situation mastering of sustainable development model is given the top priority, demonstrating the essential result of its application in a form of possibility to define the best correlation between economically expedient and environmentally tolerable loads during coal mining. The given paper is an attempt to work out the main principals to approach the creation of sustainable development model in regard of the definite region case. In this study, recovery of copper from solid material (obtained by leaching of chalcopyrite with oxalic acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide) with a copper oxalate structure was carried out selectively using HCl. The chemical composition of the solid was as 29.3%, 9.7%, and 13.3% for Cu, Fe, and S, respectively. Selective recovery of copper by degrading the copper oxalate structure with a low-solubility product (Ksp = 4.43 × 10−10) was performed by conventional leaching in the presence of HCl. The optimum leaching conditions were determined as 5 M of HCl concentration, 318 K of leaching temperature, 120 min of leaching time, 25 ml/g of liquid–solid ratio and 400 rpm of stirring speed. Under these conditions, approximately 77% of copper and 3% of iron were taken into the solution. According to the characterization of the leach residue that was obtained, the oxalate structure was degraded. Moreover, the results of XRD analysis showed that the sulfur (S) and cubanite (CuFe2S3) phases were mostly observed in leaching residues, and this was supported by the SEM-EDX data. Based on the results, it may be stated that selective copper extraction can be obtained from a chalcopyrite concentrate by a two-step leaching method using a conventional hydrometallurgical technique.

Coal-fired generation, which emits 82% of the power sector CO2, would be a likely target for CO2 reduction. Compliance with the Kyoto protocol will require a 30% reduction from the projected year 2012 emission level even with moderate load growth. This paper describes an analysis of power industry CO2 reduction options and their costs to assess how a generator would make compliance decisions under a mandatory CO2 emissions reduction program. Carbon sequestration, fuel switching and new plant construction are considered.

A patent-applied-for process has been developed in which zinc chloride is extracted by tributyl phosphate in kerosine, and stripped with ethylene glycol or ammoniated ethylene glycol. The anhydrous zinc chloride is precipitated from the glycol as the ammine and zinc chloride is prepared by thermal decomposition with recycle of ammonia. The process permits the production of high grade zinc from scraps and drosses. Its applicability to the recycling of zinc will be illustrated.

Andalusite is a member of the sillimanite group of minerals consisting of andalusite, kyanite, and sillimanite. These minerals are the structural polymorphs of Al,Si05 (the anhydrous silicate of aluminium) and although chemically similar, they differ in physical properties due to their different crystal structures. For further information on the sillimanite group, see the chapter on Kyanite and Related Minerals that follows. The minerals are generally the products of the metamorphism of alumina-rich sediments and are found in schists, gneisses, or hornfelses, which have undergone either regional or thermal metamorphism from their original form. Sedimentary deposits may also form since the minerals are chemically and physically resistant to breakdown. When heated to a sufficiently high temperature the sillimanite group minerals convert to mullite with a resultant volume expansion and the liberation of silica. Due to the stability of the mullite formed, its high hot strength and resistance to chemical and physical erosion, they are widely used in the manufacture of refractories and special ceramics (Table 1). The reaction can be represented as follows: [ ] The worldwide use of these minerals depends to a large degree on their availability (Fig. 1). Andalusite, with its lower conversion temperature and the lowest volume expansion on being heated is the natural choice as a raw material to produce energy-saving refractories without prior calcination. The Republic of South Africa holds by far the largest minable andalusite deposits of the world, estimated at some 70 Mt of known in situ reserves. The only other large commercial production of andalusite comes from France, with known reserves of about 5 Mt. Potential new deposits are known from China, Ireland, Australia, and South America. World consumption of andalusite in special performance refractories has risen from less than 10 ktpy in 1960 to nearly 300 ktpy in 1990, which is due to cost effectiveness in many industrial applications compared to other conventional refractory products. Andalusite-based refractories have traditionally been used in Europe, South Africa, and the Far East; usage in America was limited in the past due to relatively high delivery costs and availability of other local refractory minerals. However, there is a significant trend towards greater use of andalusite in North America, thus opening new markets and replacing other traditional refractory raw materials. GEOLOGY Andalusite occurs in metamorphosed rocks of clay-like com- position, as in the andalusite-hornfelses in thermal aureoles (contact metamorphism), formed under conditions of high temperatures and low stress, and in regional metamorphic rocks, such as the andalusite-schists. These schists are mostly unconnected with definite igneous intrusions but were presumably also formed at high temperatures and under low stress. Andalusite can also appear in alluvial deposits associated with the primary deposits. At depths of 10 to 20 km, temperatures of up to 450°C might be expected. Another result of increasing depth is an increase of pressure due to the load of the rock cover. The load stresses involved in metamorphism is generally believed to lie in the range 0 to 10 000 bars. During contact metamorphism the increase in temperature is brought about by the injection of magma. The temperature reached in the country rock at some distance from the igneous body will always be less than the initial temperature of the intrusion, which is presumably less than 1 200°C, and will vary with time and distance from the contact. A simple metamorphic reaction involving dehydration of an aluminous sediment can be: [ ] At higher temperatures sillimanite would form at the expense of andalusite, while kyanite would be the mineral formed at higher pressures, as can be seen in the phase diagram of A12Si05 (Fig. 2).

Today there are numerous electronic rotating vane and thermal (hot-wire) anemometers, as well as vortex meters available to measure air velocity. Of these, a laboratory and field evaluation has found that certain instruments are better suited to routine airflow measurements in mine roadways and ventilation ducts. This paper concludes a study sponsored by the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada, that was introduced at the 5th U.S. Symposium. The study investigated the suitability of currently available electronic anemometers as replacements for the traditional mechanical analog devices while maintaining standard methods such as the continuous traverse. Six electronic instruments were subjected to extensive tests under controlled conditions both in a wind-tunnel and in the field at an underground mine. The evaluation concluded that ergonomics and design were major considerations in unit preference as most of the instruments had very similar performance characteristics. Specific findings were: a) In the wind-tunnel the vane anemometers, especially the "micro" vanes, were more susceptible to misalignment or yaw effects but these were not noticeable in the field; b) Both the vortex and hot-wire anemometers were suitable for continuous traverses of mine roadways; c) Traversing ventilation ducts was more practical than a Pitot-tube multi-point assessments or discharge measurements; d) Yaw is a major concern in duct measurements; e) The continuous traversing method for roadways overestimates the average air velocity; f) Hot-wire anemometers can require significant air density corrections; and g) Hot-wire anemometers are better suited than rotating vanes to mine roadways of less than 1 m/s average air velocity. Based on research detailed in this paper, the ventilation engineer should be able to match the mine's requirements with the presented instrument performance characteristics, thereby optimizing the purchase of a new anemometer and the efficiency with which air velocities are measured.
